SPRING 2020

FOUNDATION FROM THE CHAIRMAN Welcome to the Spring 2020 edition of Foundation News in what continues to be our 10th Anniversary year. This tumultuous year has produced many trends, some being positive, many negative. For far too many, it has been an annus horribilis, one to forget and move on from. Of the two trends I would like to focus on, one is negative and distressing – the other positive and uplifting. Let us begin with the negative and distressing trend: there were 186,000 more young Australians not in employment in August 2020 than there had been at the end of March 2020 – and, on current forecasts, there is likely to be a further 120,000 young Australians not in employment by early next year. In approximate terms, therefore, it is likely that there will soon be 306,000 young Australians not in

FROM THE VICE PRINCIPAL Haileybury enjoys a rich heritage. Since its founding in 1892 the School has grown to take its place at the forefront of Australian education. Commencing at the Brighton Coffee Palace on the corner of New Street and South Road, then opening at the beloved Castlefield site, then in Keysborough and the Newlands farm, Lord Casey’s property at Edrington, and then the City Campus in the heart of Melbourne and more recently to Darwin. All the while with academic excellence, social justice, an international outlook and enterprise and entrepreneurship being the hallmarks of a Haileybury education. At the centre of our rich heritage is our philanthropic character: Haileybury’s desire is to ensure that the School more than endures - that it thrives and leads the way. Indeed, Haileybury has been the benchmark in the

employment.* Trends like that will take many years to surmount, let alone reverse. The positive and uplifting trend is, fortunately, close to home. During 2020, the delivery of a Haileybury education has continued to grow in both quality and stature, against all the odds. When schools were forced to close their physical doors and create a complete virtual environment, Haileybury initiated one of the most comprehensive and effective online learning programs in Australia. It is evident that online learning lacks many attributes of ‘the real thing’, and yet, as the end of the academic year draws near, the 2020 Leavers ‘Exit Survey’ produced the highest score ever recorded. Haileybury’s pedagogical trend is both positive and uplifting. The connection I am making between these two trends is that, while the immediate outlook for hundreds of thousands of young Australians is highly uncertain, the quality of a Haileybury education will ensure that our graduating students will have every chance of securing employment and forming a career of their choice in the years ahead.

This has very positive implications for our Foundation’s Scholarship Fund donors: whether you give during your lifetime or leave behind your own educational legacy; whether you are able to donate regularly, frequently or occasionally, you will be doing so in the knowledge that your scholarship recipients will be receiving a life-changing education to help them navigate through a very uncertain world. delivery of education during this challenging year. Many who have come to Haileybury have confirmed their role as custodians of this fine school - that they leave it a better place than when they arrived, as demonstrated through their generous gifts and benefactions.

The Foundation’s efforts are built upon its ability to reach out to all in the Haileybury School community. Our Old Haileyburians, parents and past parents, staff, and friends are all an essential part of our philanthropic endeavours.

Families have bestowed their own legacy. Scholarships and bursaries are bequeathed and invested. People have given buildings and seats, trees and artwork. Others give to libraries and pavilions, to departments and archives. Sports men and women might give a trophy, musicians an instrument. Advice, expertise, direction and, of course, their time. Through the ages, many with generous and giving hearts have enquired of the needs of the School and worked to meet them.

Haileybury’s success lies in the fact that it is a friendly community that warmly welcomes parents as well as its students. At the heart of this community are many active parent and Old Haileyburian groups who are working to support the School and to provide care to nurture families through their educational years and beyond.

The Haileybury Foundation, with its Development Office, is the body through which the philanthropic initiatives for the School are advanced. Its role is to ensure that it is investing in the School’s future. The Foundation, formed in 2010, manages programs such as: • scholarships • building funds and appeals • bequests and benefactions • the library Fund.

On behalf of the School, I invite you all - Old Haileyburians, parents and friends - to embrace the School community and to actively participate in its growth and development through the life of its many clubs, associations and support groups. Your enthusiasm is welcomed! Thank you all for your ongoing support. SCOTT DORAN VICE PRINCIPAL COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT & ADVANCEMENT

FROM THE DIRECTOR OF DEVELOPMENT Connecting with our Community... in a different way

For a long time organisations such as Haileybury Foundation and the OHA have relied on face-to-face events as the only form of member engagement. In the current COVID-19 environment, the best philanthropic organisations have quickly pivoted to ensure that connection and effective and enthusiastic engagement has continued. At Haileybury, our staff have been challenged to be innovative and thought provoking. Our team have been challenged to be creative, to be effective communicators and to provide levels of engagement that are comparable to pre COVID times. As our School has adapted to a new way of teaching, so too has our Development team adapted to a new way of engaging. To build bonds with donors, the Haileybury Foundation team has used webinars and virtual gatherings to discuss how their gifts are assisting students who wouldn’t otherwise have had the opportunity of a Haileybury education. We titled our mix of online events the Donor Impact Series. Events were held in Zoom meeting format, where donors could interact with each other, the guest presenters and members of staff. Events have taken the form of a presentation from a senior member of staff, allowing donors to hear of progress from various areas of the School. Staff members included Scott Doran, Vice Principal Community Engagement & Advancement; Anna Sever, Vice Principal Teaching & Learning; Sean Allcock, Director of Sport; and Peter Thomas, Director HaileyburyX.

education meant and how far out of reach it had seemed years ago. These students would not have had a Haileybury education had it not been for the generosity of our donors. Donors had the very real chance to see how their gifts have changed lives. We have loved having our Haileybury Foundation community join us and we hope that they have been inspired by the presentations. If you missed one or all of the events, please contact us at foundation@ haileybury.vic.edu.au to receive your personal link to view these sessions. You won’t regret it! Thank you.
