News Autumn 2022

From the Chairman Neil Sutcliffe

Welcome to the latest edition of your Haileybury Foundation News. As I have discussed in our latest Impact Report, a successful donor-led scholarship program is at the heart of our mission and strategy.

Community

Giving From the Director of Development & Alumni Relations Russell Davidson

Haileybury Foundation is indebted to our community groups for their support and belief in the work of the Foundation. Community is at the very heart of Haileybury and we are incredibly fortunate to be represented by a myriad of diverse community groups, all working towards a common goal of ensuring that our students have the best possible opportunity to succeed.

Our inaugural Foundation Scholar, Edward Chua, graduated in 2014. Since then, another ten Foundation Scholars have done so and are now making their way in the world, their lives transformed through philanthropic endeavour.

maintained beyond their current recipients, this means that we are halfway towards the core component of our “2030 Strategy”: developing a sufficient corpus and regular donations to fund fifty Foundation Scholarships within the next eight years.

Given that it was only established in 2010, an average of one graduating scholar per year is a positive outcome from what might be termed the ‘formative years’ of our Foundation. As a donor community, we have made significant progress recently—in fact, the current twenty-two scholars are exactly double the amount of those that have already graduated and there are also a number of additional scholarships pledged but yet to be awarded.

Should we collectively achieve this milestone, there would be a more than tenfold increase in graduating Foundation Scholars within the next ten years compared to our historical record of the last ten years. At this level, your continuing generosity would be making its own indelible mark, not only for each fortunate individual and the broader culture of Haileybury itself, but on our community and society as a whole.

In broad terms, with the assumption that today’s scholarship programmes are

Neil Sutcliffe Chairman, Haileybury Foundation

The generosity of the Haileybury Parents and Friends of Keysborough (HPFK) and Haileybury Parents and Friends of Castlefield (HPFC) has seen transformational gifts made to Haileybury Foundation enabling three students to have benefitted from a Haileybury education. Both organisations do an incredible amount of work behind the scenes and we are grateful that some of the fruits of their labour have been directed to the Foundation, enabling students to benefit from an incredible educational experience. During the course of 2021, former members of Haileybury’s First Cricket XI and First Football XVIII had the opportunity to purchase a Heritage numbered cap and football jumper respectively. Proceeds from the purchase of the caps and jumpers was directed to the Haileybury Scholarship Fund. Such was the popularity of each item that funds raised from each, along with support from the School and cricket support group, The Hazlitt Club, enabled the addition of two further scholarships for the Foundation. In 2022 we have commenced the Charles Langtree Scholarship named after Haileybury’s first ever VFL/AFL footballer and in 2023 we will launch the Gerry Hazlitt Scholarship. This scholarship, named after Haileybury’s first ever Test Cricketer, will be provided to a boy or girl who would not ordinarily be able to attend Haileybury and who has an interest in cricket.

Haileybury is one community. Within our School there are numerous groups doing incredible work for the benefit of our students. We are indebted to you all for the support of the Foundation. You are changing lives forever. Russell Davidson Director of Development & Alumni Relations

School fees and government grants alone do not provide for the advancement of the School and thus the work of the Foundation is vital in supporting the School’s vision to be recognised as a great world school and to build an exceptional community of learning.

From the Vice Pricipal Scott Doran

Foundation Membership Foundation membership is open to all donors, with cumulative giving promoting members to higher levels of membership. Foundation members enjoy a number of benefits including invitations to special events and opportunities to engage with the wider School community.

The Haileybury Foundation was established in 2010 and has since played a vital role in ensuring the best educational outcomes for our students. The Foundation has supported key facility projects across the School, contributed to resourcing, and added to the diversity of our student body through the provision of needs-based scholarships.

For more information about becoming a Foundation member, please contact the Development Office for a confidential discussion on +61 9904 6100 or email foundation@haileybury.vic.edu.au.
