OLD HAILEYBURIANS ASSOCIATION

ANNUAL REPORT

2020 /21

PRESIDENT’S REPORT In a year when our traditional methods of “Staying Connected” were significantly tested, I have been delighted with the way our Association has been able to adapt and respond. Our leaner Council structure was implemented at the 2020 AGM and our refocussed team commenced work at the height of the Pandemic last year. With face-to-face engagement largely suspended, working in conjunction with the OHA Office team, attention turned to accelerating the development of initiatives and programs planned to support our Vision and new Strategy. Our focus on Digital & Technology underpinned the planning and development of the new OHA website. We are now only a matter of weeks away from launch. This is one of the most significant projects undertaken by the OHA in recent years and reflects our stated intent to use technology to enable our program. The new oha.com.au will become the home for a number of other significant initiatives that have been evolving throughout the year. The appointment of Chapter Ambassadors in Sydney, Brisbane, Canberra, Adelaide and Perth has been a significant step forward in delivering consistent support for our Alumni outside Melbourne. This is a critical element ensuring we evolve as an OHA for all Old Haileyburians. Our Business portfolio has enjoyed a significant injection of skill and experience this year. The pending launch of a revamped Mentoring Program and advanced work on a Member Benefits Program are two significant outcomes of this renewed focus. At this year’s AGM we farewell from Council Laura Rabinovich, Andrew Hicks and Andrew Kennedy. Our thanks to each of these Councillors for their commitment and dedication to the OHA. Andrew Hicks has been a fine representative supporting the network of OHA Clubs and driving greater levels of support from the OHA and alignment across our program. His breadth of knowledge across the network will be missed. Laura Rabinovich leaves us after six years on Council that culminated with two years as our Junior Vice President. Laura’s support of her portfolio group has been outstanding and her incisive, thoughtful commentary and input at Council has helped shape a stronger OHA. My thanks to James Kemper our Senior Vice President. James’ leadership and commitment to the OHA is greatly appreciated as we drive our agenda of evolution. Our Executive Office lead by Russell Davidson, continue to impress and delight. It is a credit to the passion and energy of Russell and his team that the OHA was able to adapt so rapidly and professionally during the last year. Our thanks are also extended to team members Hayley Denny and Kylie Phillips. It is no exaggeration to say that their efforts actually lead to a stronger OHA in the last twelve months. I would specifically highlight and thank Russell for his clarity of thought and the outstanding quality of the advice he brings to Council. Our relationship with our school continues to strengthen as we connect across a Haileybury Life. I am delighted to report that we enjoy the passionate and active support of Scott Doran, Haileybury Vice Principal Community Engagement and Advancement as well as Principal and CEO Derek Scott. Their presence at OHA functions and visible engagement in our program is a privilege and greatly appreciated in supporting us to deliver on our Vision. It is my great honour and pleasure to serve as President of the OHA and I thank you all for this opportunity. Our Association is in great health and we have an exciting array of initiatives underway that will continue to advance our Vision. As we return to ‘normal transmission’, I look forward to seeing you again soon. However, I do recognise that this may not always be possible and trust that no matter how we keep in contact, we always Stay Connected! Mr Brad Hyde (OH ‘82) President

EVENTS EVENTS UPDATE The OHA ran 39 events between 1st April 2020 – 31st March 2021, with 986 guests attending these events and 286 apologies recorded, equating to a total engagement of 1,272 OHA members during this period. The COVID-19 Pandemic saw the OHA events move to an online platform for most of the 2020 year. Missing data is a result of failed technology at the time and therefore in reality, our engagement was greater than documented. Stand out events included: •

The online Webinar Series hosted by the Director of Development and Alumni Relations, Mr Russell Davidson, was introduced as a new offering for members in isolation as a result of the Pandemic.. The series had a total of 20 online events from Life as an AFL Umpire from the Gold Coast Hub to Modern Work Practices and a focus on Remote Working. The entire series is available online through Vimeo https://vimeo.com/ showcase/7115979 and has inspired the OHA to look at online event opportunities as part of the ongoing event schedule.

Nothing brings a nation together like sport, and the OHA are no exception to this rule. The Former First XI Cricket Reunion saw over 170 former players attend and reminisce within their generation marquees and the event was considered a huge success. The OHA look forward to running similar events for First Football, Soccer and Netball.

Our invitation only Sursum Corda event moved online for the first time in history. Our members were treated to some rare insights into the success of online learning and how it might lead to changes in future schooling, from Haileybury’s CEO | Principal, Mr Derek Scott followed by insights from Ms Rebecca Arceri, COO at Haileybury on how the independent school sector navigated the challenges of COVID-19. This was followed by the key speaker, Mr Steven Cain, CEO of Coles who gave a first hand look into how Coles were handling the pandemic.

Class of 1990 & 1991 - 30 Year Reunion saw the first rooftop event held at the Haileybury City Campus and also brought two years together for those that missed out during the Pandemic year.

Like most organisations, we were severely hit by the implications from the COVID-19 pandemic and the Association begins to move out of these challenging times to again deliver face-to-face events. While the 2021 year continues to deliver many unknowns, the OHA are in a great place to handle and pivot our event program as needed. Our supportive members with their understanding attitude have also helped us navigate the unknowns with ease and for that we are very grateful.

TOTAL ENGAGEMENT

With the launch of the new OHA website scheduled for Tuesday, 29th June 2021; we look forward to delivering a new online booking platform for our events schedule, where members can view upcoming events in an online platform, quickly and easily add the events that matter to them to their preferred device, and access online tickets through their member profile.

DATA COORDINATION The process around the traditional recording of ‘lost member’ data was placed on hold and attention turned to research and fact-finding for the implementation of a more intuitive data analytics platform. This project was coupled with the Haileybury Data project which commenced earlier this year. Step one of the OHA project has seen much of the OHA data captured moved to an integrated platform using the school database APIs. This means that members can view and update their data directly from the new website, without the need for human assistance. In addition to this, additional fields are being captured within the OHA website from personal interests to event information that will allow us to develop custom analytics dashboard for key OHA stakeholders in the future. We look forward to continuing to improve our data analytics and hope to be able to share member facing dashboards in the coming years.

CLUBS The OHA is indebted to all who contribute to the success of our clubs and the health and wellbeing of Old Haileyburians who choose to partake in Club offerings. As of March 31, 2021 the OHA was fortunate to have the following Clubs represent our organisation: AEROBICS CLUB Sarah Fry (OH 2014) AIKMAN (ROWING CLUB) Nat Callea (OH ‘92) ATHLETICS/CROSS COUNTRY CLUB Andrew Scott (OH ‘91) BOWLS CLUB Mark Thompson (OH ‘82) CLIMBING CLUB Andrew Chen (OH 2015) CRICKET CLUB Manny Coomaraswamy (OH ‘99) DANCE CLUB Amber Fyfe (OH 2009) FOOTBALL CLUB Michael Constable (OH ‘84) GOLF CLUB John Fergusson (OH ‘85) HOCKEY CLUB Clark Anstis (OH ‘75) NETBALL CLUB Sophie Leggos (OH 2008) PIPES & DRUMS CLUB Andrew Spierings (OH 2013) WATER POLO CLUB Nick Johnson (OH 2012) Thank you to Fraser Gough (OH ‘91) for all of his support during his tenure. Fraser stepped down from the Golf Club early in the year. Like many other organisations, our OHA Clubs for the most part were unable to participate as they would have wished in 2020/21. Most of the competitions that Clubs participate in were either cancelled fully or placed on pause during their respective seasons. We pay our utmost respect to those Clubs that were able to remain connected and engaged during the COVID -19 enforced lock downs. In many cases clubs were able to employ positive mental health and engagement strategies that ensured members felt well connected and supported through difficult times. Fortunately clubs operating during the summer period were able to get underway and compete without restriction from November 2020. We were delighted that the OHA Cricket Club were able to introduce a women’s team for the first time in their history. In their first year, the Club under the guidance of co-captains, Jesse Visakan (2012) and Malisha Vidyananda and with playing stocks consisting of alumni and current students, made the finals. This was an incredible effort and albeit for a narrow loss in the Semi Final could well have ended the season as Premiers. The Cricket Club has made incredible gains in recent season and under the leadership of Club President, Manny Coomaraswamy (’99) developed an extensive list of players, more than enough for two teams. Both the 1st and 2nd X1 made the finals this season and after a fantastic match against Melbourne High School Old Boys, our club was crowned Premiers for 2020/21. We congratulate Club Captain Vinay Lakshman (2012) and his team for their wonderful efforts and commitment. We look forward to our Clubs participating again in 2021/22 and to the introduction of the following new Clubs during this period; • •

OHA Amateur Theatre OHA E Sports.

Our Clubs Grants program was somewhat curtailed in 2020/21, however the OHA were very happy to contribute to the following initiatives; • •

A final payment to the Aikman Club for the purchase of a second hand boat for training sessions at Carrum. Funding to the OHA Cricket Club to support the introduction of a women’s cricket team.

OHA SPONSORS Major Sponsor The Old Haileyburians Association is once again indebted to our major sponsor, Mercedes – Benz Berwick for their support. Sponsorship from Mercedes-Benz Berwick allows the OHA the opportunity to provide its members with a high level of support along with subsidised prices to events and activities within the network. Mercedes-Benz Berwick is an outstanding brand and we encourage all members of the Haileybury community who are in the market for a prestige vehicle to contact Mike Buxton (OH ’82) on 0412 561 134 or at mikeb@mbberwick.com.au.

OHA AWARDS OHA MEDAL The Old Haileyburians Association Medal is awarded annually to an Old Haileyburian in recognition and appreciation of exceptional achievement to the community beyond expectation in their field of endeavour. Given that there are now in excess of 14,000 members of the Old Haileyburians Association, to be awarded this medal is a significant achievement. The winner of the 2020 OHA Medal was Prof. Peter McDougall (OH ‘67) Prof McDougall attended Haileybury from 1960-1967. He was in the first cohort of students to attend the Keysborough Campus in 1963 returning to Castlefield in 1964. It was Mr John Neal who inspired Peter to excel in Chemistry in Year 12, which enabled him to enrol in Medicine at the University of Melbourne in 1968. Peter graduated MB BS in 1973 and spent two years as a Resident Medical Office (RMO) at the Preston and Northcote Community Hospital. This time consolidated his love of Medicine and in 1976 he was appointed RMO at the Royal Children’s Hospital (RCH). After 3 months he decided on a career in paediatrics and passed his Fellowship exam at the first attempt in 1978. In 1976 he met Dr Pam Cox who was also RMO at RCH. They married in 1977. In 1980 Peter was appointed Overseas Fellow in Neonatology at the Bristol Maternity Hospital, UK and Pam joined a General Practice in Bristol. This gave both a very rich experience in life and medicine. Whilst there, the Medical Director of RCH informed Peter that there were not likely to be any positions in Melbourne in the relatively new field of neonatology and advised him to ‘look elsewhere or change your career’. ‘Elsewhere’ was the Royal North Shore Hospital of Sydney where Peter was appointed Staff Neonatologist in 1982. Two years later in 1984 he was head hunted to join the staff of the Neonatal Department of RCH where he remained until 2010. Over the next few years Peter led many changes including the establishment of a new neonatal intensive care unit, the building of an academic research unit, the introduction of surfactant treatment for sick premature infants, and the pioneering of High Frequency Oscillatory Ventilation (HFOV) in Australia. Peter had seen this therapy introduced in the United States, offering lifesaving treatment for very sick babies with lung disease. In 1992 after months of preparation his team used HFOV to save the life of the grandson of one of Peter’s English teachers at Haileybury. The boy was recently one of the team of builders of the house of one of Peter’s executive colleagues. HFOV is now standard care in neonatal intensive care units throughout Australia. The 1990s were a difficult time for hospitals with severe cutbacks in funding. Peter decided to enrol in a Masters of Business Administration in 1995 and graduated with distinction in 1998. Soon afterwards he was appointed to the Executive of the RCH as Chief of Medicine and Director of the Department of Neonatology. In his time of Directorship of Neonatology, many changes and improvements occurred including an expansion of the intensive care unit. In 2009 Peter was awarded RCH’s most prestigious award, the Chairman’s Medal. In 2010, the RCH CEO appointed Peter as Executive Director of Medical Services (EDMS) and Chief Medical Officer (CMO). These roles gave him the responsibility and accountability for ensuring the highest standards of medical care in the hospital. The demands of this role meant that he had to relinquish his clinical work and leadership role in the neonatal intensive care unit. As an executive he was most proud of his involvement in the design, planning, move and implementation of the new RCH that occurred in October 2011. Now into the 10th year, the RCH building is considered the best design of any Children’s hospital internationally. Peter also played a role in the planning and implementation of the Electronic Medical Record in 2016 and for this he was awarded the Elsevier HiMSS Asia Pacific Chief Medical Officer of the Year in 2017. In 2015, he was appointed Honorary Clinical Professorial Fellow, Department of Paediatrics, University of Melbourne.

Between 2014 and 2018, Peter was also Clinical Lead for the Victorian Paediatric Clinical Network with Safer Care Victoria and visited most hospitals in Victoria in order to standardise paediatric care throughout the state. Clinical Practice Guidelines, the Victorian Children’s tool for observation and response, and Anaphylaxis and Button batteries safety guidelines were implemented by this committee to improve paediatric care in Victoria. Between 1991 and 2018, he was a Member of the Consultative Council on Obstetric and Paediatric Mortality and Morbidity (CCOPMM) and Chair of its Neonatal Subcommittee, 2014-2018. In 2018, Peter retired from his position as EDMS and CMS at RCH but retains an honorary position as Professor and is a member of the executive of the RCH Alumni. In 2018, he was appointed as Senior Clinical Advisor to CCOPMM and in 2020 he joined the Board of Directors of Monash Health. Since 1984, Peter has walked along Brighton and Elwood Beach paths at 6am (more recently 7am) with Old Haileyburians Lou Irving, Peter Strain, David Tuxen, and Peter Atkinson who sadly died in 2018. He plays golf at Portsea to a standard not too dissimilar to his football and cricket abilities. He also took up relearning French in 2019. In addition to the aforementioned, Peter is fortunate and thankful to have friends from Haileybury school-days, Chris Pfeiffer, Robert Jackson, Guy Brown, Mark Travis, Jim Bonwick and David Scrimgeour. He considers that he is lucky to have had a rewarding life and career. He is very grateful for the opportunity that Haileybury College gave him and for the support and love of his parents, sister Janet, wife Pam, children Keith, Helen and Robert and grandchildren Hamish and Elliott. Peter becomes the 13th winner of the OHA Medal and joins the Honour Roll as follows:

OUTSTANDING YOUNG ALUMNI AWARDS The OHA Outstanding Alumni Awards are in their seventh year and once again provided a popular array of candidates for nomination. The awards are presented to Young Old Haileyburians who have achieved significantly in their field, have demonstrated exceptional human values and/or have rendered outstanding service to the OHA. The 2020 recipients were awarded online as a result of the Pandemic. Video speeches were submitted and shared with the community via social media and news platforms. Online speeches can be access through the Vimeo Showcase: https://vimeo.com/showcase/7638328 BUSINESS Sarah Fry (OH 2014) Sarah is the owner of PowerFitbySarahFry, and co-owner/head coach of Pinnacle Sport Aerobics. Since graduating, Sarah has been an inspiration for everyone in the fitness industry; being open and honest about pushing through the pain, and keeping herself and others accountable, especially when COVID-19 hit. With all her work stopped, Sarah ran daily zoom pilates classes from her place to help put a smile on others face and allow them the chance to get active during this unknown period of time. Beginning with 1 client and 5 sessions a week, Sarah currently has 30+ clients and 23 sessions a week, incorporating cardio, resistance and Pilates to help people continue moving whilst at home. Post COVID-19, she has created an online studio where she runs live zoom classes 3 times a week, and uploads videoed classes weekly to maintain the opportunity for people to work out at home. Sarah also participates in the OHA sport aerobics team. Boe Eyking (OH 2015) Boe is an incredible business woman with Platter&Boe! Kick starting a small business in platters and grazing tables, she has grown immensely in the past year since she started and clearly works hard in producing content, engaging with followers/customers and makes delicious and aesthetically pleasing grazing tables! Boe has also been heavily involved in distributing gifts for presenters in the OHA webinar series and has also presented webinars both for the OHA community and Year 9 cohort. Sudip Mitra (OH 2012) Sudip has been working at PwC for 3 years and has had an impact on the transformation of tax, working on a newly developed product, Airtax. Having completed his Bachelors degree and Chartered Accountants program, Sudip is also on the mental health community at PwC and recently completed a nano-degree in Business Analytics as he looks to make a broader impact on PwC and its clients through the use of automation. Sudip is also still a part of the OHA cricket club and is mentoring year 8 students in the “Start Up” entrepreneurship class at Haileybury. COMMUNITY Sophie Leggos (OH 2008) For the past eight years, Sophie has been the mainstay behind one of the OHA’s largest and most versatile clubs, OHA Netball. Sophie’s passion for the sport and her old School is undeniable as most weeks she works hard to ensure that each of the teams (mixed or women’s) has the required number of players, registrations paid and uniform distributed. Sophie works in closely with the Haileybury netball program to provide former students with the opportunities to play one of the nation’s most popular sports after they graduate. Hector Simpson (OH 2012) Hector is the Marketing and Partnerships Manager at MANRAGS and he is working hard to eradicate textile waste in Australia and ensure the planet is being cared for, for future generations! MANRAGS are pioneers of the world’s first digital, direct-to-consumer textile recycling initiative. After the success of their textile recycling initiative, the company has been able to save more than 63,000kg of textiles from landfill and prevent more than 250,000kg of greenhouse gases from polluting our atmosphere.

SPORT Josh Battle (OH 2017) Josh is an AFL footballer with St.Kilda Football Club after being selected with pick No. 39 in the 2016 National Draft. After debuting as a school boy in 2017, Josh had a breakout year in 2019 where he finished second in the Saints’ intercept marks, third for rebound-50s and fifth for effective kicks, earning himself a much-deserved Rising Star nomination in Round 22. In 2020, Josh has continued to entrench himself as one of the most versatile talents in the AFL. STEM Alex Oman (OH 2012) Alex is a biomedical researcher at The Florey Institute of Neuroscience and Mental Health where he is a member of the Vascular Neurodegeneration Laboratory. Alex’s research investigates how chronic brain inflammation after stroke may lead to the onset of Dementia. Solving this problem will significantly aid in resolving a great burden for patients, carers, and their families. Alex has recently been selected to present his research at the joint European Stroke Organisation & World Stroke Organisation Conference this November in Vienna, Austria. This provides Alex with the opportunity to disseminate his research to the largest global congregation of stroke researchers and further the international effort to treat and prevent stroke. Through his work, Alex has been able to see the impact of mental health research first-hand. This is why Alex is a strong advocate for increasing government funding for mental health research and improving access to mental health professionals. Outside of his work, Alex is a tutor for younger Haileyburians and participates in mentorship programs to show students where a career in STEM can lead them. ARTS No nominations in 2020.
