OLD HAILEYBURIANS ASSOCIATION

ANNUAL REPORT

2021 /22

PRESIDENT’S REPORT Much like the rest of Australia, as the year progressed the OHA began to emerge from two years of strange times. It has been delightful to see the traditional program of events and club fixtures return to the roster; personally 2022 marks my ‘Forty Years On’ and so it was a great thrill to be able to catch up with old friends, relive memories of what we were like and share stories of what is new in our lives. However, the OHA is so much more than this; yes, the program is focussed on ‘Staying Connected’, however the definition of what that practically means continues to expand. This is best illustrated by new initiatives such as our Mentoring Program offering opportunities for Alumni to contribute to the development of others in a formal structured manner. Similarly, the launch of our new website returned our association to the forefront of communications with our membership and presents a contemporary, representative view of our Association and membership. Whilst our OHA Office has undergone some change during the year, the team continued to develop and deliver innovative support programs and initiatives the envy of our peers. In early 2022, we farewelled Hayley Denny who contributed significantly to our digital and communications advancement during the pandemic. We are delighted to have brought on board Cristina Zannoni as Events Coordinator and we welcome the promotion of Kylie Philips into the role of Operations Lead. At this year’s AGM we farewell from Council Peter Sise and Grace Sutcliffe. Our thanks to each of these Councillors for their commitment and dedication to the OHA. Both have brought great purpose to their contributions and should be proud of their time on Council. My thanks to James Kemper our Senior Vice President. James’ leadership and commitment to the OHA is greatly appreciated as we continue to drive a program of change and growth. Our Councillors similarly give of their time and expertise and show great devotion and commitment to their roles – I thank them for their efforts and passion. Executive Director, Russell Davidson continues to inspire and drive innovation and great outcomes within the OHA office. His encyclopaedic knowledge of our membership and genuine care for the welfare of Old Haileyburians is remarkable. It is significantly due to Russell’s efforts and drive that our Association has emerged from the pandemic stronger than we entered it. We are fortunate to have a wonderfully supportive, encouraging and collaborative relationship with Haileybury. As our school strives to be a Great World School, the Haileybury team continue to support the OHA to achieve similarly high aspirations and as importantly, underpins this with practical commitment to our program. My thanks and gratitude to Scott Doran, Haileybury Vice Principal Community Engagement and Advancement as well as Principal and CEO Derek Scott. The year ahead will be one where Council and our program grows in depth and we will challenge traditional views of our Alumni Association. The diversity of our membership is unparalleled amongst Australian schools; our great challenge is to match that diversity and inclusiveness with our representation and program offering.

It continues to be my great honour and pleasure to serve as President of the OHA and I thank you all for this opportunity. Our world has changed and yet the desire for us to Stay Connected as a society remains; how that happens may be different, but rest assured, your Association will evolve, adapt and be ready to respond. Mr Brad Hyde (OH ‘82) President

Development & Alumni Manager Hayley Denny

Development & Alumni Coordinator Kylie Phillips

Development Office Events Coordinator Cristina Zannoni

We take this opportunity to thank Hayley Denny for her outstanding service to the organisation. Hayley completed her service to Haileybury in April 2022. Hayley was an outstanding Haileybury employee, having played a significant role in OHA events such as YOHA, Reunions, Generations Breakfasts and Clark Club events within the Principal’s Unit and IT prior to relocating to the Development Office. Hayley showcased her skill in the areas of UX, design, member services and the ability to connect on a personal level with all members of the Council and community. Hayley departs Haileybury to further her business and managerial career. We wish her well.

EVENTS EVENTS UPDATE The OHA ran over 18 events between 1st April 2021 - 31st March 2022, with over 750 guests attending these events. As was the case in the 2020/21 the COVID pandemic forced the cancellation or postponement of a number of events in the period June – October. Additionally, once events were returned, there was a reluctance amongst some members to venture out into social settings. Stand out events included: • The annual Clark Club luncheon where Peter Burke (OH '59) provided an outstanding oration detailing his time as a 1st XI cricketer under Brian Clark. • The OHA Golf Day was re-scheduled from September to January and was played on a most outstanding course at Southern Golf Club. • The Sip and Paint event, one of the newest events on the OHA calendar was held on the Victoria Star boat. Participants had the opportunity to let their creative juices flow whilst enjoying delicious canapes and plenty of good cheer. .

EVENTS SCHEDULE

CLUBS The OHA is indebted to all who contribute to the success of our clubs and the health and wellbeing of Old Haileyburians who choose to partake in Club offerings. As of March 31, 2022 the OHA was fortunate to have the following Clubs represent our organisation:

Jessie Curtain (OH 2014) Nat Callea (OH '92) Andrew Scott ( OH '91) Mark Thompson (OH '82) / Jim Bonwick (OH '66) Manny Coomaraswamy (OH '99) Amber Fyfe (OH 2009) Michael Constable (OH '84) John Fergusson (OH '85) Clark Anstis (OH '75) Sophie Leggos (OH 2008) James Walsh (OH 2004)

In 2021/22 despite being impacted by the pandemic, it was pleasing to see; • The introduction of the OHA Bowls Club as a regular competition club. Playing out of Cheltenham Bowls Club, OHA Bowls competed over the summer season in the Southern Electric Light Competition, performing admirable and engaging with 25+ members whilst doing so. • OHA Cricket fielded four teams for the first time ever with two men’s and two women’s teams competing. We are indebted to the support of current Haileybury students who assisted with the women’s teams. A special thanks to OHA Cricket Club President, Manny Coomaraswamy (‘99) who steps down after three years in charge. Manny has made an extraordinary contribution to the Club, particularly in the area of women’s cricket and his efforts have not gone unnoticed. The OHA Clubs Grants program once again assisted our Clubs immensely through the funding of important programs and equipment including; • Funding for the National Championships for OHA Aerobics. • A part time General Manager of Football for the Old Haileybury Football Club to concentrate on aspects such as sponsorship, player recruitment and volunteer engagement. • Initial funding for OHA Bowls for team uniforms, registrations and membership of Cheltenham Bowling Club. This funding is that which is ordinarily provided to a start up club, entering as a competition club for the first time. • Continued financial support for the OHA Women’s program including equipment, registration and ground fees.

OHA SPONSORS

Major Sponsor The Old Haileyburians Association is once again indebted to our major sponsor, Mercedes – Benz Berwick for their support. Sponsorship from Mercedes-Benz Berwick allows the OHA the opportunity to provide its members with a high level of support along with subsidised prices to events and activities within the network. Mercedes-Benz Berwick is an outstanding brand and we encourage all members of the Haileybury community who are in the market for a prestige vehicle to contact the dealership.

OHA AWARDS OHA MEDAL The Old Haileyburians Association Medal is awarded annually to an Old Haileyburian in recognition and appreciation of exceptional achievement to the community beyond expectation in their field of endeavour. Given that there are now in excess of 18,000 members of the Old Haileyburians Association, to be awarded this medal is a significant achievement. The winner of the 2021 OHA Medal was well known Rutherglen winemaker, Mr Chris Pfeiffer OAM (OH ’67). Chris attended Haileybury from 1960-1966 and thereafter Knox Grammar School until 1968. Chris then completed his university studies at Sydney University and Riverina College of Advanced Education (now Charles Sturt University). Over time, they have developed Pfeiffer Wines from a Direct to Consumer Winery to a Winery with now significant National and International distribution. Pfeiffer Wines has been awarded the top grading regularly and has been a James Halliday Five Star Winery for over 10 years. Chris regularly provides Industry representation and advocacy to Government through Industry groups and the wider business community. Amongst many roles, He was Chair of The Winemakers of Rutherglen for 21 years, a Board Member of Victorian Wine Industry Association and Foundation Board member of Victorian Winery Tourism Council, which developed wine tourism across Victoria. In 2023 Chris will celebrate his 50th Australian Vintage as a winemaker. Chris becomes the 14th winner of the OHA Medal and joins the Honour Roll as follows:
