people to develop and advance education in this country. I have always admired the high standards that are expected and that all are held to. The School and its principals have always encouraged my growth and professional development.
I have always admired the importance that the School places on social justice and the understanding that a Haileybury education is a privilege and should be shared with as many people as possible.
I admire the School’s push, that our students should do good and be good.
continue to aspire to achieve, to lead, to be kind and caring. Sue and I hope that future generations of Haileybury students might understand that the Haileybury education we provide offers an apprenticeship in independence, the hard work of respecting individual rights while honouring shared values, of shaping one’s future while also creating the School’s destiny.
We feel privileged to be able to contribute to this and would encourage others who are able, to do likewise.
Scott Doran and Sue Ballinger-Doran are the newest members of the Haileybury Foundation’s Winged Heart Society. We asked them why they have decided to leave a gift to Haileybury in their wills.
What is it about Haileybury that has kept you here as a staff member for over 30 years?
It is wonderful to reflect on my time at Haileybury as both a student and a staff member. I am grateful that Haileybury has kept me in its heart and hand for all those years. Haileybury has continually challenged me to grow and aspire, but at the same time it has encouraged me to live the mission of the School: ‘to develop high achieving students who are connected to each other and to the communities in which they live and serve’.
Haileybury is continually evolving, always striving to achieve its vision to be recognised as a great world school. I like that. Every day is different and the School is always looking up and out to new challenges and opportunities. I am so proud to work for this institution, which leads education in the country, but at the same time cares for the individuals in its community. I feel like I belong at Haileybury, and I love what I do and the people I work with.
What aspects of Haileybury continue to inspire you?
The School is always evolving – I really love that. I love the challenge that this provides, the opportunity to work with extraordinary
I admire the work of the Haileybury Foundation: the desire to provide more opportunities for deserving students to be gifted a Haileybury education through its generous scholarship program. I have seen lives change forever through a Haileybury education, mine included!
Why have you decided to leave a gift in your will to Haileybury Foundation?
Both my wife Sue and I have been so fortunate to have our lives nurtured through Haileybury and the community it has allowed us to grow in. We have both been fortunate to develop lifelong friendships with some of the most extraordinary people. We have also witnessed the benefits of Haileybury’s education and alumni network with our own two children, who were educated at Haileybury. Both of our children represent the best of a Haileybury education: the desire for endeavour and the benefits of hard work, all the while understanding the importance of kindness and care.
If Sue and I can leave a gift that continues to provide these opportunities to deserving young people who might never be able to afford a Haileybury education, we know that we are helping to ensure the future of our great School, and the future benefits of receiving an education at Haileybury. We both believe it is the right thing to do.
What is the legacy that you wish to leave behind with your gift?
A hope for the future; that through a world-class education young people will
