Preface

Poetry Slam

Slam poetry is a very prevalent piece of my life. I’ve been performing since I was a sophomore in high school. Joe P started my journey into the slam community. He taught our theatre class slam, but he did something different than most. Rather than criticizing our writing, he focused solely on our performance. He emphasized the importance of slam poetry not only as a writer’s art form, but as performer’s art form. The first 3 years of my slam poetry experience was completely competition based, and I always placed (save the one instance I went over time). As I’ve expanded my writing into college, I’ve begun to shift my style of slam. I’ve become more invested in the hip hop community, and that has had serious effects on my writing. Chicago rapper Noname has become my biggest influence. One day I was doing research on her and I discovered that she started out in slam poetry. That’s why her sound was so appealing to me. I started to experiment my own sound with the addition of music. I found backtracks on Soundcloud (from an artist named RRAREBEAR) and began writing. My style has shifted to ‘poetry rap.’ It’s not slam poetry, but it’s not quite a song either. It’s rides this line between a Noname track and a traditional slam. I’ve added vocals as well, but they always serve as either an intro or closer, never a chorus in the middle. This new outlet is extremely liberating, and I credit everything to the Houston youth poetry community that raised me.
