— for the first time since 2003. The team also claimed its most SEC wins and conference goals since 2004. Macdonald hopes last season's successes continue the foundation that has been laid since he took over the program in 2004. Macdonald's run to the head position in Starkville came just a year after he accepted his first Division I coaching job as a volunteer assistant with the Bulldogs in 2003, where he was reunited with longtime friend Neil McGuire, who, three years earlier, had attained his first tenure as a Division I head coach at the Northeast Mississippi school. Working primarily on the defensive unit during his initial spring season in Starkville, Macdonald was instrumental in helping to progressively enhance an already experienced defensive club. Prior to the Fall season in 2003,

"Games are won in the noise and excitement of the playing field, but championships are won quietly and without applause on the 'training ground.' That, for me, sums up my philosophy on the game. Success is determined completely by what the culture of training is and how committed people are to the cause."

COACHING STAFF Macdonald was elevated to assistant coach where his primary duties included assuming day-to-day coaching duties with the defense, as well as recruiting. With his experience as a coach, the Bulldogs turned in a school-record goals against average and yielded just 0.86 goals per game en route to a 9-8-3 record — one that included a pair of victories over nationally-ranked squads, including No. 6 Florida. The victories were the first for an MSU team over a top 25 squad in school history. Macdonald's tenure as a full-time assistant was short-lived, however, as he received the opportunity of a lifetime when longtime friend McGuire departed Starkville to become an assistant coach at Texas. On July 29, 2004, just days before he would welcome a squad of 21 players back to campus, he was named Mississippi State's third head coach. "Coaching has always been something that has just fell into my lap," Macdonald said. "People have always told me that I e to to would have a future in it. I have just been very fortunate ver ery be in the right place at the right time. I've always had very good opportunities presented to me." ip ppi Macdonald's appointment to the head of the Mississippi port po State soccer program continues a passion for the sport p in n that spans back to his days as a youngster growing up Scotland. wing Like all Scottish youngsters around his age growing hs hi up, Macdonald often found himself in the streets of his the Inverness neighborhood refining his soccer skills on the wed d blacktop, rather than on the grass of a freshly mowed d as s pitch. To him, as well as his friends, it was perceived and d normalcy to set up makeshift goals out of trash cans and ove e jackets just to play the game they developed a strong love for early on in life. There was always time for soccer, whether it be 15 hool minutes at break time or even an hour before school err a started, and finding foes and teammates was never htt to challenge. The challenge lied in finding enough daylight play an entire game. and As Macdonald foraged his way through primary and but secondary school, his skills could not do anything but his develop. It did not take long before he was dominating his pro r chums on the field, often times catching the eyes of prohes fessional scouts looking for young talent, or from coaches am ms abroad looking to find talent for their collegiate programs in the United States. d a At the still tender age of 18, Macdonald attended find coaching school in nearby Edinburgh where he would find tu ure himself playing on the other side of the ball from future and college teammates and longtime friends McGuire and was Kevin Moreland. Following his experience there, it was ab bly, then that Macdonald got the call that would, inevitably, change his life. elpIn 1996, with his parents' blessing and his friends helpthe ing him to adjust, Macdonald made the transition to the do out United States, making a name for himself as a standout gia. athlete at Augusta State University in southern Georgia. ical ic Having turned heads with both his tactical and technical al o skills from those who attended practices, Macdonald also impressed his coaches as well in his first preseason. okie ok Macdonald saw action in every game of his rookie re ent campaign and would go on to play a number of different st of positions at Augusta State, but he typically made most his playing appearances in the center midfield role. ca apA four-year starter for the Jaguars, Macdonald capan nd tained the team during his junior and senior seasons and wel el was also a recipient of a handful of team awards, as well

as one conference player of the week accolade. He played and started in every game he was eligible for during his illustrious career in Augusta, and he left the distinguished academic institution as the career record holder in games played and games started. Following his graduation from Augusta State in 1997, Macdonald had set his sights on graduate school at the university with the full intention of becoming a future history teacher. However, with McGuire in need of an assistant coach at his new job at Iowa Central Community College, Macdonald, once again, got a phone call that would set his path in a new direction. It was the years following he would find himself in the coaching world, trading the classroom for the soccer field. During the duo's initial campaign in Fort Dodge, Iowa, as coaches of both the men's and women's teams, the ICCC women finished the season as regional champions with a 9-3-1 clip and

COACHING STAFF developed his coaching philosophies and tailored it to his work ethic and responsibilities. Attitude and determination to succeed should always be number one when it comes to playing the game. Commitment to the cause has been something that has translated into his recruiting philosophy as well. “I look for character first of all,” said Macdonald of the three things he looks for in a prospective student-athlete. “Because we are in the Southeastern Conference, you have to look at athleticism and pace as an incredibly important factor. Ideally, you'd like to have a technically sound player that has a good grasp of what the fundamentals of the game are. That makes things a lot easier.” Over the years, Macdonald has seen his share of life-changing experiences, but nothing comes close to what he experienced before the his tenure as MState’s head coach even began. Having met his wife Jamie, an assistant professor in the Graphic Design program at Mississippi State, when both were athletes at Augusta State, the couple celebrated the birth of their first child, Colin Ross, in May, 2004, and welcomed their second son, Liam Alexander in March, 2008. Born May 16, 1972, in Banff, Scotland, Macdonald currently holds his coaching license from the Scottish Football Association. Two years ago, Macdonald returned to his home country and completed his Scottish FA UEFA "B" license, one of the top coaching decorations in international soccer.

featured the nation's leading scorer at that level. The men's team won the regional championship as well en route to concluding the season with a 15-4-1 record and a No. 14 national ranking. Following a 1998 campaign that saw both the Tritons and Lady Tritons march to regional and national rankings, McGuire would depart the campus of ICCC for an assistant coaching job at Iowa State, thereby handing over his position as head coach to Macdonald, who took the reigns of the program at full speed. Over the course of the next five seasons, he would skipper the men's team to five regional championships, four times reaching the Sweet 16 of the National Junior College Association of America (NJCAA) national tournament, including his final season in 2002 when the squad advanced through to the Final Four. His accomplishments and rigor as a coach and mentor were equally noted on the women's side as well, where he led the Lady Tritons to five consecutive regional championships, including an appearance in the Elite Eight in 2002. During his five-year tenure in Fort Dodge, Macdonald collected an impressive 149-34-5 coaching record. At the conclusion of the 2002 campaigns, he was honored with NJCAA Region Coach of the Year accolades, along with being named one of three finalists for NSCAA National Coach of the Year honors. He was also lauded with Who's Who of America's Teachers as well. With the background of assistant and head coaching jobs at Iowa Central, along with a professional coaching stint with the W-League's Memphis Mercury, Macdonald will begin his 15th season as a collegiate coach this year, having been successful at each step of his progression up the ladder rungs of the coaching world. Over the years, he has

eginning his 13th year as a collegiate soccer coach, Andy Manners enters his eighth season at MSU, but his ninth working alongside Neil Macdonald. Manners' duties include, but are not limited to, on-field instruction, day-to-day operations and recruiting. He is also in charge of scouting, purchasing and compliance. "Andy brings an awful lot to the table for us," Macdonald said. "He is a very intelligent person and he knows the game of soccer inside-out. He is a very good onfield coach, and I don't know if I have ever worked with anyone better than he is. He is the type of guy that will demand greatness from his players every day." Manners came to Starkville following a very successful coaching career in Fort Dodge, Iowa, where he was charged with

the head coaching duties of both the Triton and Lady Triton soccer teams. As head coach of the nationally-ranked ICCC programs for two seasons, Manners collected a 33-6-3 record as head coach of the men's team and a 26-9-3 clip as skipper of the Lady Tritons. Having secured the Region XI championship for the second-straight season under Manners' guidance, the ICCC men concluded the 2004 campaign with a 15-43 record that was stopped short on a heartbreaking overtime loss to South Suburban CC in the district tournament. The Lady Tritons finished their season with a standout 13-5-1 mark, but were stopped just shy of their seventh consecutive Region XI championship with a loss to Iowa Western in the region finals. While in Fort Dodge, Manners coached three females and one male to NJCAA all-America accolades, while his tutelage also led to eight all-region accolades (five women) for his athletes. Prior to his appointment as ICCC head coach, Manners served two stints (1999, 2001-02) as an assistant in Fort Dodge under Macdonald, where the duo led both squads to a pair of NJCAA national tournament berths. "Neil and I worked alongside one another for three years in Iowa, and I am excited to be coaching with him again" Manners said. "He is an excellent coach and leader who I have learned a lot from, especially at the Division I level." Manners played in 80 games (79 starts)

during his career at George Mason (199497) and scored 35 points on 12 goals and 11 assists from his central defender position. While in Fairfax, Va., he helped lead the Patriots to a combined 44-32-10 record, including a trip to the 1996 NCAA Tournament. A first team all-Colonial Athletic Association selection and second team allVirginia honoree as a junior, Manners was also a three-time recipient of CAA ScholarAthlete laurels as well. Manners has also played soccer in England for both Watford F.C. and Sunderland A.F.C. Manners earned his Bachelor of Science degree in health, fitness and recreation resources from George Mason in 1999 before taking a break from coaching in 2000 to earn his Master's degree in education from Augusta State in 2002. He is currently pursuing his doctorate from Mississippi State. A native of Sunderland, England, Manners holds his 'B' coaching license from the United States Soccer Federation, an English 'C' coaching certificate and a NSCAA level 2 goalkeeping diploma. He has also served as a staff coach for the Olympic Development Programs in both Alabama and Mississippi. He is currently the lead instructor for Mississippi Soccer Association's Northern District. Born April 17, 1976, in Sunderland, England, Andy is married to the former Shannon Coleman. The couple have two children: a daughter, Riley, and a son, Andrew.

KIM PETTIT Assistant Coach • 1st Year at Mississippi State • 1st Year Overall • Mississippi State, 2012

M

ississippi State head soccer coach Neil Macdonald did not have to look far to find his new assistant coach, as former player Kim Pettit will trade the uniform for her first season as an assistant coach with the Bulldogs. "I am thrilled to be joining the staff here at Mississippi State," Pettit said. "I love this University so much, and it is a dream come true to be able to start my coaching career here. I am excited to get started doing what I can to help our program compete for championships." The Madison, Miss., native played four seasons under Macdonald, serving as a team captain her final two years. Pettit played 53 games in the midfield, starting nine times and logging nearly 2,000 minutes of action. Injuries limited her to four contests her final season after she scored a career-best five goals as a junior.

The psychology graduate also excelled in the classroom, earning a place on the SEC Academic Honor Roll all four years. This summer she was named Mississippi State's female nominee for the SEC's prestigious Boyd-McWhorter postgraduate scholarship. Pettit has also been actively involved in the community during her time in Starkville. Last season she was named to the SEC Community Service Team, and she served as the M-Club president following tenures as vice president and treasurer. "We are excited to have Kim joining our coaching staff," Macdonald said. "She has been a great representative for Mississippi State as a player, and she will really be able to sell our program and University to prospective student-athletes. Kim's outstanding knowledge of the game, combined with her passion for Mississippi State, will benefit us as we continue building a championship program." As if balancing academics, a playing career and community service obligations weren't enough of a full plate, Pettit also found time to begin her coaching career. Pettit, who joined the Bulldog coaching staff after working in Mississippi State's Athletic Academics office during the spring semester, spent the past two summers working as a coach

ROBBIE KRÖGER Volunteer Assistant Coach • University of Witwatersrand • Johannesburg, South Africa

N

eil Macdonald was needing someone to work with the Bulldog goalkeepers, and he found a playing and coaching veteran right on campus in Robbie Kröger. The Johannesburg, South Africa, native brings over 20 years of playing experience into his third season working with State's goalies and assisting with some of the program's summer camps. "We are excited to have Robbie on staff. He has tremendous experience as a player and coach, and that has proven valuable during his work with our goalkeepers," MSU head coach Neil Macdonald said. "He works with our keepers on a daily basis and brings tremendous energy to our team. We needed a specialist to work with our goalkeepers, and Robbie gives us that. He has been a tremendous asset in helping with the development of our goalkeepers." In his two seasons, he has been instrumental in developing Skylar Rosson into one of the SEC's top goalies. In 2010 Rosson posted 110 saves, fifth-most in MSU single-season history. A year later she posted a conferencebest and NCAA ninth-most 131 saves while cutting her goals allowed tally nearly in half. Under his tutelage, Rosson has also pitched seven shutouts, including blank sheets in upsets of No. 20 Auburn and No. 11 Florida last season. Prior to focusing on his aca-

demic career, Kröger played on several provincial teams. His first taste of elite soccer action came as a member of the U12 and U14 Eastern Transvaal Provincial teams. A couple of years later he earned a place on the Southern Regional Schools U16 squad in his native Johannesburg. During 1995 and 1996 he enjoyed a stint playing for VFL Michelstadt in the Hessen Regional Liga, Germany. In 1996, Kröger also had the opportunity to play for Balfour Park in Johannesburg's U19 Premier Soccer League. Kröger earned Goalkeeper of the Club honors as he helped Balfour Park claim the Preseason Cup, Premier League title and the Premier Cup. His play for Balfour Park helped earn him a professional trial with Wits University, a team in South Africa's Premier Soccer League. Kröger's passion for goalkeeping stayed with him during his transition to the United States. Upon his arrival in Starkville, he had the opportunity to train the goalkeepers for both Starkville Academy and Starkville High School. Kröger also provides private goalkeeper training for aspiring net-minders in the area.

Kröger takes pride in developing quality goalkeepers because he believes that they "hold the heart of the team on their sleeve, and that good training, awareness and athletic skills translate to team confidence and positive playing mentality on the pitch." When not on the soccer field instructing State's goalkeepers, Kröger is instructing students in the classroom as an Assistant Professor in Mississippi State's Department of Wildlife, Fisheries and Aquaculture. Kröger, born July 28, 1978, in Rio De Janeiro, Brazil, came to Starkville after earning a Ph.D in Biology from the University of Mississippi. Prior to continuing his studies in the Magnolia State, Kröger attended the University of Witwatersrand in South Africa, obtaining Bachelor of Science degrees in Botany and Environmental Conservation Biology and a Master of Science in River and Wetland Ecology. Kröger is married to the former Lisa Blair Sloan of Memphis, Tenn. The pair welcomed a son — Leo James Kröger — on Dec. 19, 2011.

COACHING RECORDS

WILLIAM B. FINDLEY II 1995-99 • 37-53-4 (.415) The first coach in Mississippi State history, Findley guided the Bulldogs through their first five years of existence. He helped earmark the Maroon and White as the SEC’s most improved squad in 1996, leading his squad to a 12-5-2 clip - an overall five-game improvement from the 1995 season. That same year, Findley also coached the Bulldogs to their best home record (12-2) in school history en route to nearly skippering the team to their first SEC Tournament berth.

YEARLY RESULTS 2002

NEIL MCGUIRE 2000-03 • 36-40-5 (.475) In his first two seasons, McGuire led the Bulldogs to a 8-1/2 game improvement from a 4-16-0 record in 1999 to a 13-8 clip in 2001. McGuire led the Maroon and White to program highs in both overall and conference victories in 2001 en route to capturing the school’s first-ever women’s SEC championship of any kind, as well as the first SEC Coach of the Year laurel for the MSU Soccer program. During his four years, McGuire coached five different athletes to all-conference accolades, including first team selections in 2001 and 2003.

Having spent 2002 as a volunteer assistant and 2003 as a full-time assistant on college teammate Neil McGuire’s coaching staff, Macdonald took over the reigns of the MSU soccer program in August, 2004 - days before his team would report for preseason practice. The results of his tutelage were quick as State turned in its most wins since 2001 and matched the school record for conference victories with a 5-5-1 SEC clip. The most successful rookie coach in the history of the Bulldog soccer program, he also became the first MSU rookie coach to lead his team to the SEC Tournament - just the second SEC Tournament berth in school history.

SCOTT STRICKLIN Director of Athletics Mississippi State, 1992 Using more than two decades of intercollegiate experience in communications, development and marketing, Scott Stricklin has built a wave of momentum within the Mississippi State fan base over during his tenure as the director of athletics. From his first day on the job as Mississippi State’s Athletic Director in May 2010, Stricklin, integrating the department’s three foundations of focus on student-athletes, possessing great integrity and aggressively promoting Mississippi State University, has overseen a stretch in which the Bulldogs enjoyed both on and off the field successes unparalleled in more than a decade. On the field, the Bulldog football team has posted back-to-back victories in postseason bowls and has claimed three-consecutive Egg Bowl wins. The men’s tennis team claimed the Southeastern Conference Western Division title in both 2011 and 2012. Baseball reached postseason each of the past two seasons with softball advancing to the NCAAs in 2012. Mississippi State’s men and women athletes finished the 2011 fall semester with an aggregate 3.01 grade point average, the highest single semester grade point average in school history. Thirteen of MSU’s 16 varsity sports surpassed the 3.00 grade point mark. Bulldog student-athletes again excelled in the NCAA’s Academic Progress Rate, with all 16 sports far exceeding the minimum standard. Stricklin has overseen record fundraising for Bulldog Athletics, which has produced new facilities such as the $11.7 million Mize Pavilion at Humphrey Coliseum, a new $20 million football practice and training complex as well as future expansion and upgrades to Davis Wade Stadium. The Bulldog Club has solicited gifts totaling more than $20 million for the football facility, including a record $12 million gift from the Seal Family Foundation. The Bulldog Club has initiated the most ambitious fundraising drive in the athletic department’s history – an initiative called “Today, Tomorrow, Forever” – to generate funding for new construction and upgrades to existing facilities. Supporters are responding at the turnstiles as well. In 2010, Mississippi State fans packed Davis Wade Stadium for every game, buying all available season tickets for the first time in school history. Capacity crowds have become the norm as 16-consecutive home games have been sold out, and the school has created a waiting list that has topped 1,000 requests for season ticket purchases. Stricklin certainly wasn’t a stranger to the Bulldog family or college athletics when he took over the reins at State. A 1992 graduate of Mississippi State, the Jackson, Miss., native’s resume is highlighted by 23 years of experience on the collegiate level in various capacities at five different universities. In the two years prior to becoming athletic director, he served as Senior Associate Athletics Director for External Affairs at his alma mater, overseeing fundraising, football and men’s basketball scheduling, managing MSU’s all-sport agreement with Adidas, facility planning, and serving as the administrative sport liaison for men’s basketball and softball. It was those types of day-to-day tasks that prepared the personable

Stricklin to take over the top seat in the Mississippi State athletic department. Yet it’s a journey that started during his formative days as a dedicated and tireless worker in the Mississippi State media relations department that’s led to his highly-respected career coming full circle. Prior to graduating, Stricklin’s stint in the MSU media relations office included three seasons (1990-92) as the media contact for the nationallyrenown baseball program. Upon graduation, he was named assistant media relations director at his alma mater. He continued his climb up the ladder of success when he was named Associate Media Relations Director at Auburn, where he served from 1993-98. In 1998, Stricklin left Auburn to become Assistant Athletics Director at Tulane, where he served as the primary media contact for the Green Wave’s 1998 12-0 football team. Next came a four-year run in the Big 12 Conference at Baylor (1999-2003) as Assistant AD for Communications and Marketing. In 2003, Stricklin returned to the Southeastern Conference at Kentucky and spent five seasons as the Associate AD for Media Relations, where he oversaw the day-to-day publicity of the tradition-rich Wildcat basketball program. It was his last stop before returning to Mississippi State in the spring of 2008. Stricklin, 42, is married to the former Anne Howell, the youngest daughter of Basketball Hall of Fame member Bailey Howell. The couple has two daughters, Abby and Sophie.

DR. MARK KEENUM University President Mississippi State, 1984 Dr. Mark Everett Keenum became Mississippi State’s 19th president Jan. 5, 2009, following a distinguished public service career. Despite difficult economic times, Dr. Keenum has guided Mississippi State to new heights. His quick action to address budget shortfalls put the university in position to meet those challenges and maintain the highest level of academic excellence. The university has experienced record enrollment growth, which includes students with the highest ACT average of any university in our state. Increased enrollment has also spurred new construction on campus, with two new residence halls completed and opened this August. The Mize Pavilion, a state-of-the-art basketball practice facility, was dedicated in 2011. Plans in the immediate future include construction of another new residence hall, a new classroom building and renovation of historic Lee Hall. The Leo W. Seal Jr. Football Complex will be completed in early 2013, and bids were accepted this summer to expand Davis Wade Stadium, a project expected to be completed by August 2014. Since 2009, fundraising has reached all-time record levels. Giving by alumni and friends has surpassed $290 million over that period, including the highly successful StatePride initiative that is providing scholarships for students and support for MSU faculty. Dr. Keenum has also been instrumental in expanding the MSU Promise Program, which provides need-based scholarship assistance to Mississippi students whose families have limited financial means. Through the Sonny Montgomery Center for America’s Veterans, he has also led initiatives to make Mississippi State one of the most veteran-friendly universities in the nation. Mississippi State has strengthened its role as the flagship research university in the state. The Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching classified MSU as a university with “very high research activity,” the only such designation in Mississippi. Dr. Keenum travels frequently to Washington, D.C., meeting with Congressional leaders and federal agency heads to pursue research opportunities and broaden the university’s influence on the national level. He has also worked closely with the governor, lieutenant governor and Mississippi Legislature in support of higher education in our state. A graduate of Mississippi State University with degrees in agricultural economics, Dr. Keenum began his career at MSU as a faculty member with the Extension Service and the Department of Agricultural Economics. He went on to serve as chief of staff to U.S. Senator Thad Cochran in Washington, DC and was Under Secretary of the United States Department of Agriculture prior to returning home to Mississippi State. He graduated from Corinth (MS) High School and earned an associate of arts degree from Northeast Mississippi Community

College in Booneville and was a member of the Northeast Tigers football team. Dr. Keenum is married to the former Rhonda Newman of Booneville, also an MSU graduate. They have four children: Rett, Mary Phillips, Katie and Torie.
