Sam Purcell was named the ninth head coach in Mississippi State women’s basketball history on Saturday, March 12, 2022. The 2024-25 season will be his third year as a head coach and his third at the helm of the women’s basketball program at Mississippi State.
In 2023-24, Purcell led Mississippi State to a 23-12 record, 8-8 SEC, and became the only head coach in program history and one of six in the SEC women’s basketball since 2000 to surpass the 20-win mark in each of their first two seasons. Purcell has totaled the most wins (45), most SEC wins (17) and most NCAA Tournament wins (2) of any head coach through their first two seasons in program history.
Purcell coached a pair of Bulldogs to All-Conference honors during the 2023-24 season. He led graduate student Jessika Carter to 2024 All-SEC Second Team and 2024 WBCA Honorable All-American accolades. Carter was selected with the 23rd overall pick in the Second Round of the 2024 WNBA Draft by the New York Liberty and was the ninth overall player to be drafted to the WNBA and the first under Purcell at Mississippi State. She was the first player from Mississippi State to be drafted since both Teaira McCowan and Anriel Howard were selected in 2019.
Purcell also led now graduate student guard Jerkaila Jordan, who returns for her fifth season in 2024-25, to 2024 All-SEC Second Team honors. Jordan set career-highs in points, rebounds, assists, steals, blocks and minutes totals in 2023-24 were all career-highs and was the only player in the SEC to average at least 15.0 points, 5.0 rebounds, 2.0 assists and 2.0 steals per game in 2023-24.
With a win over No. 9/9 LSU on Jan. 29, 2024, Purcell earned his first win over a top-25 and top-10 opponent as a head coach. It was Mississippi State’s first top-10 win since a win at No. 10 Texas on Dec. 2, 2018. It was also the first sellout crowd of his tenure with 9,121 fans inside Humphrey Coliseum.
Mississippi State opened its second season under Purcell in 2023-24 ranked in the Associated Press Preseason Top-25 poll at No. 25, the program’s first time listed in the preseason poll since 2020-21. The preseason spot also marked a return to the AP top-25 poll after a 44-week absence. Mississippi State earned its highest rankings of the season when it was ranked No. 21 in both the week four editions of the AP Poll on Nov. 21 and the USA Today Coaches’ Poll on Nov. 22. The No. 21 ranking in the AP Poll tied the program’s best in the poll since Jan. 25, 2021, while it tied the program’s best ranking in the USA Today Coaches’ Poll since Jan. 26, 2021.
Under Purcell, Assistant Coaches Michelle Clark-Heard and Corry Irvin went on the earn head coaching positions at Mercer and Chicago State, respectively, while Graduate Assistant Luke Carns went on to be named Director of Player Personnel at Texas State following the 2023-24 season. It marked the latest staff under Purcell to advance their career after Assistant A.D. of Women’s Basketball Joi Williams was named Men’s Basketball Chief of Staff at South Florida and Graduate Assistant Kelby Jones earned an Assistant Coach position at Oklahoma State, each following the 2022-23 season.
Purcell’s first season as a head coach was a season of ‘firsts’ for the up-and-coming coaching star. A handful of those ‘firsts’ included his first game as a head coach, his first win, and his first NCAA Tournament appearance. But it also came with firsts for the Mississippi State women’s basketball program that saw Purcell become the winningest first-year head coach in program history.
In his first season sitting in the head chair, Purcell became the winningest head coach at Mississippi State in their debut season with 22 wins while also becoming the first to have a winning record in the SEC after going 9-7 and finishing fifth in the toughest conference in the country. Most impressive, though, is that he guided the Bulldogs to the NCAA Tournament following a three-year hiatus.
In leading the team to the Big Dance in his first season, Purcell set the standard at Mississippi State, as no coach in program history had made the NCAA Tournament before their third season leading the program. On top of that, Purcell became the fastest coach at Mississippi State to win a pair of NCAA Tournament games. In winning two tournament games, Mississippi State became the first team in NCAA Women’s Basketball history to advance to the tournament’s Second Round after starting in the First Four round.
Purcell helped guide a pair of Bulldogs to All-Conference honors during the 2022-23 season. He coached Jessika Carter to Second Team All-SEC honors and a place on the SEC All-Defensive Team. Carter had a career season under Purcell, setting career bests in points scored (458), blocked shots (65) and assists (42). He also led Debreasha Powe to the SEC All-Freshmen team after a promising rookie campaign for the Mississippi native.
Known as an elite recruiter, Purcell hit the ground running in year one, signing the nation’s 16th-ranked recruiting class despite not having the luxury of an entire season of recruiting. His 2023 signing class, which ranked as the second-best class in program history, only behind the 2018 class, featured three EspnW HoopGurlz top-100 recruits.
Before he arrived in Starkville, Purcell spent nine seasons at Louisville under the direction of future hall of famer Jeff Walz. While on the staff at Louisville, Purcell helped guide the Cardinals to a 266-48 overall record with eight NCAA Tournament appearances, seven Sweet 16s, five Elite Eights and two Final Fours. He also helped lead Louisville to four ACC Regular Season Championships and the 2018 ACC Tournament title, their first tournament crown since 1993.
Promoted to associate coach in 2017-18, Purcell played a critical role in guiding Louisville to a program-best 36-3 overall record that included an ACC Regular Season and Tournament Championship. The Cardinals opened the year going 20-0, marking the best start in program history. They then earned a No. 2 ranking in the Associated Press Top 25 Poll and defeated opponents by an average of 27.5 points per game. During the 2020-21 season, Purcell helped the Cardinals to a 16-0 start and the first-ever No. 1 ranking in the USA Today Top 25 Coaches Poll in program history.
Purcell helped the Louisville offense consistently rank among the nation’s best. In every season but one at Louisville, the offense ranked inside the top 40 in points per game while averaging more than 72.2 points per game during that time. The impressive scoring margins that Louisville won games by –more than a +16.0-scoring margin in each of his last five seasons there – was mainly due to a strong emphasis on defense. Under the guidance of Purcell, the Cardinals allowed opponents to average more than 60 points per contest just twice.
Purcell led the recruiting efforts at Louisville and he has landed the nation’s top recruit on two separate occasions with two different programs. Purcell inked top-rated prospect Kaela Davis in 2013 at Georgia Tech and Asia Durr at Louisville in 2015.

PURCELL CAREER RECORD BREAKDOWN
All nine signing classes that Purcell helped recruit were ranked in the top 15 by ESPN. Of those nine classes, four were ranked inside the top 10, highlighted by the No. 1 class in 2015, the No. 4 class in 2017, the No. 6 class in 2016 and the No. 8 class in 2014. Even more impressive, of the 15 McDonald’s All-Americans in Louisville’s history, 13 were recruited by Purcell.
Before his time at Louisville, Purcell had stops at Georgia Tech, Tulsa and Auburn. Purcell has learned from some of the best minds in college basketball, including Jeff Walz, Nell Fortner (former Auburn and current Georgia Tech head coach and the head coach of the 1996 Olympic Team) and Joe Ciampi (25-year head coach at Auburn, 2005 Hall of Fame inductee and Purcell’s father-in-law).

Humphrey Coliseum, the largest on-campus basketball arena in the state of Mississippi, will be the home of women’s basketball for the 50th season in 2024-25.
Named in honor of George Duke Humphrey, a former Mississippi State president (1934-45), the Coliseum not only serves as the home of the Bulldogs’ men’s and women’s basketball teams, but also hosts concerts and other events as well as some administrative and Olympic sport offices.
Opened in 1975, Humphrey Coliseum, which was originally constructed from 450,000 red Mississippi-made bricks, stands the equivalent of a seven-story building (84 feet) and is 318 feet long and 268 feet wide. The current capacity for women’s basketball games is 9,100.
Since it first hosted basketball action in 1975, Humphrey Coliseum has undergone many modifications during recent years to rank as one of the finest multi-purpose facilities in the Southeastern Conference. The most recent renovations were completed ahead of the 2024-25 season.
HUMP RENOVATIONS COMPLETED
There is a new era inside Humphrey Coliseum. Recent renovations, which were announced on October 2018, are now finalized to welcome in the 2024-25 season and include new premium seating options and an expanded, modernized concourse that features new dining options and a team store. In addition to the aforementioned additions, the women’s and men’s basketball programs have an updated player space, locker room, practice court and training room. The floor in the Hump was replaced in the summer of 2017 with the installation of a new permanent floor and a part of the recent renovations was a new design that features a silhouette of the state of Mississippi State. The new floor cost $132,000 and replaced the old mobile floor that served Humphrey Coliseum for 15 years. The new court is a Connor VIP II, maple floor and was installed by Sports Floors Inc. out of Memphis.
OTHER NEW ADDITIONS
The new permanent court followed the addition of a new scoreboard in July 2015. Mississippi State partnered with Daktronics, Inc., to provide an integrated LED high-definition center-hung video display system that includes four main video displays and two ring displays suspended above the court to keep fans informed and entertained throughout every event.
The new scoreboard replaced the one that was added in 2004 thanks to the Henry Mize Foundation, and it was unveiled one year after the men’s and women’s basketball teams greatly upgraded their locker rooms. The upgrades to the Richard C. Adkerson men’s locker room and Nusz Family women’s locker room were complete with full kitchens, state-of-theart lockers with media enhancements, video rooms and team rooms.
In addition to rotating corporate sponsorship signage at the scorer’s table between the
benches, the Coliseum has also added new banners honoring the men’s and women’s SEC championships and postseason tournament appearances, as well as banners acknowledging the achievements of Bailey Howell, Babe McCarthy and the former legendary voice of the Bulldogs, Jack Cristil.
Prior to the start of the men’s basketball team’s anticipated 1995-96 Final Four campaign, the capacity of State’s home basketball arena was increased to 10,000 with the addition of permanent seats around the Coliseum’s inner concourse. During the summer of 1996, the Coliseum underwent major renovations to accommodate the Mississippi State athletic department’s growing need for additional locker room availability.
WOMEN’S HOOPS SETS HUMP RECORDS
The women ushered in their Humphrey Coliseum era in December 1975, against Jackson State. Since that point, the Bulldogs have been hard to defeat at “The Hump,” compiling 475 wins since the building opened. Included in that total was a remarkable 18-0 home record in 2017-18, marking the first time a Mississippi State team was undefeated at “The Hump” in a season.
In 2023-24, Mississippi State finished 25th in final average home attendance, fourth in the SEC, with an average home attendance of 5,109. It marked the highest average attendance under head coach Sam Purcell and extended a streak of nine straight seasons finishing inside the top-25 in average home attendance.
Mississippi State saw the first sellout under Purcell when Mississippi State defeated reigning national champions No. 9/9 LSU, 77-73, in front of a crowd of 9,121.
The 2017-18 season saw Mississippi State eclipse 100,000 in season attendance for the first time in program history with 133,906. A Humphrey Coliseum-record crowd of 10,769 was on-hand for the Bulldogs’ win against South Carolina on Feb. 5, 2018. The tally was the largest crowd ever to watch a women’s basketball game in the state of Mississippi.
* Humphrey Coliseum was limited to 10% capacity (1,000 fans) during the entirety of the 2020-21 season due to COVID-19.

LATOYA THOMAS NO. 32 JERSEY COMMEMORATION
NOV. 11, 2022 VS. NORTH ALABAMA
LaToya Thomas is one of the most remarkable women’s basketball players in Mississippi State history and one of the greatest athletes this university has ever seen. Thomas’ name will always be synonymous with greatness in Starkville, and from here on out, her name and number will forever hang in the rafters of Humphrey Coliseum.
On Nov. 11, 2022, Mississippi State will honor Thomas by commemorating her No. 32 jersey inside Humphrey Coliseum as she becomes the first female in Mississippi State history to have this honor bestowed upon her. Thomas joins a highly exclusive club with Bailey Howell, James “Babe” McCarthy and Jack Cristil as the only Bulldogs to have their names honored forever in Humphrey Coliseum.
Thomas, a native of Greenville, Miss., put together one of the most impressive careers at Mississippi State that culminated in her being drafted No. 1 overall in the 2003 WNBA Draft by the Cleveland Rockers. With her No. 1 overall selection, Thomas became the first athlete from the state of Mississippi, male or female, to be drafted No. 1 overall to a professional league.
On her way to being drafted first overall, Thomas became the greatest women’s basketball player to wear the Maroon and White. She set numerous records, earned multiple awards, and helped put Mississippi State women’s basketball on the map.
Although Thomas graduated in 2003, she is still the record holder for the most career points scored in Mississippi State basketball history, men or women, with 2,981. She averaged 23.8 points per game in her career and scored more than 750 points in each of her final three seasons at State, including a program record 794 points during her senior campaign.
Almost two decades later, Thomas’ impressive offensive showing still has her ranked among the NCAA greats. Her 2,981 career points are ranked 14th on the
all-time NCAA list, while her 23.8 career scoring average is ranked 16th. Both career totals rank second in SEC history. She became the eighth player in NCAA Division I history to score over 2,000 career points and record over 1,000 career rebounds.
While becoming the program’s most prolific scorer, Thomas was recognized nationally with numerous awards and honors. Thomas was a four-time Kodak All-American, becoming just the sixth player in the award’s history to earn that distinction. Thomas was also named to the AP All-America Team three times in her career. Additional All-America honors that Thomas earned were: Basketball Time (2002), USBWA (2002 and 2003), Women’s Basketball Journal (2000 and 2001), Gballmag. com (2001 and 2002), and WomensCollegeHoops.com (2001, 2002, and 2003).
Thomas was a three-time Naismith National Player of the Year Finalist and a two-time ESPN The Magazine Power Forward of the Year winner (2001 and 2002).
Following her freshman season, Thomas was named the ESPN.com Rookie of the Year and the Women’s Basketball Journal Freshman of the Year. She earned one of the most prestigious awards a senior can win when she was named the 2003 Lowe’s Senior CLASS Player of the Year. She was the second-ever student-athlete to win the award and the first SEC player to earn the honor. To this day, Thomas is one of only three women’s basketball SEC student-athletes named the Senior CLASS Player of the Year.
On the conference level, Thomas earned back-to-back SEC Player of the Year honors in 2002 and 2003 and was a four-time selection on both the All-SEC First Team and the Associated Press All-SEC Team. As a freshman in 2000, Thomas was named the SEC Newcomer of the Year, SEC Freshman of the Year and helped her head coach, Sharon Fanning-Otis, earn the program’s first SEC Coach of the Year honor. She made two SEC
All-Tournament Teams and was named the tournament’s MVP in 2000. The seven-time SEC Player of the Week was the first SEC women’s basketball player to lead the league in scoring for four straight years. She was inducted into the Mississippi State Hall of Fame in 2015. Following one of the most extraordinary collegiate basketball careers to date, Thomas was selected with the No. 1 overall pick in the 2003 WNBA Draft by the Cleveland Rockers. During her rookie season, Thomas became the club’s single-season rookie leader in rebounds with 164 and ranked second in scoring with 346 points. In three playoff games against the eventual WNBA Champion Detroit Shock, Thomas averaged 13.7 points and 7.7 rebounds in the three-game series. Thomas’ WNBA career spanned six seasons and 150 career games. She averaged 9.3 points and 3.6 rebounds per game in her career while playing for some of the biggest franchises, including the LA Sparks and Minnesota Lynx.

THE UNIVERSITY
Mississippi State is a comprehensive doctoral-degree-granting institution offering a diverse student body a wide range of opportunities and challenges for learning and growth.
The largest university in the Magnolia State, Mississippi State has a statewide enrollment of more than 22,000 students and is accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges to award baccalaureate, masters, specialists and doctorate degrees.
Established in 1878 as the Agricultural and Mechanical College of Mississippi, the university has traditional strengths in engineering and scientific agriculture but has evolved into a comprehensive institution with a diverse array of programs in teaching, research and service.
The University began as The Agricultural and Mechanical College of the State of Mississippi, one of the national Land-Grant Colleges established after Congress had passed the Morrill Act in 1862. It was created by the Mississippi Legislature on February 28, 1878, to fulfill the mission of offering training in “agriculture, horticulture and the mechanical arts . . . without excluding other scientific and classical studies, including military tactics.”
The College received its first students in the fall of 1880 in the presidency of Confederate General Stephen D. Lee. In 1887 Congress passed the Hatch Act, which provided for the establishment of the Agricultural Experiment Station in 1888. Two other pieces of federal legislation provided funds for extending the mission of the College: in 1914, the SmithLever Act called for “instruction in practical agriculture and home economics to persons not attendant or resident,” thus creating the state-wide effort which led to Extension offices in every county in the State; and, in 1917, the Smith-Hughes Act provided for the training of teachers in vocational education.
By 1932, when the Legislature renamed the College as Mississippi State College, it consisted of the Agricultural Experiment Station (1887), the College of Engineering (1902), the College of Agriculture (1903), the School of Industrial Pedagogy (1909), the School of General Science (1911), the College of Business and Industry (1915), the Mississippi Agricultural Extension Service (1915), and the Division of Continuing Education, (1919). Further, in 1926 the College had received its first accreditation by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools.
By 1958, when the Legislature again renamed the College, as Mississippi State University, the Office of Graduate Studies had been organized (1936), doctoral degree programs had begun (1951), the School of Forest Resources had been established (1954), and the College of Arts and Sciences had been created (1956).
The College of Architecture admitted its first students in 1973. The College of Veterinary Medicine admitted its first class in 1977, and the School of Accountancy was established in 1979.
POINTS OF PRIDE AT MISSISSIPPI STATE
The National Science Foundation ranks Mississippi State among the nation’s Top 100 research institutions and the Magnolia State’s leading research university. Touting every kind
of support a budding entrepreneur needs, Mississippi State ranks No. 6 in the world for the impact of its entrepreneurship research initiatives.
Mississippi State is among only 2.7% of universities in the U.S. that hold the Carnegie Foundation R1-Very High Research Activity designation. Solutions to world hunger and poverty are within reach at Mississippi State, where globally diversified teams are combining forces with the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations to eliminate starvation in developing countries.
One in three of today’s on-air broadcast meteorologists in the U.S. is a graduate of Mississippi State’s nationally recognized meteorology program. Mississippi State is recognized as a top 10 Military Friendly School by VIQTORY, a reflection of Mississippi State’s commitment to supporting America’s service members and their families.
Recognized nationally for its leadership in cybersecurity, Mississippi State is one of only a few schools in the U.S. to hold all three of the National Security Agency’s centers of academic excellence credentials: CAE Cyber Defense, CAE Cyber Research, and CAE Cyber Operations. Additionally, MSU leads the NSA-sponsored national CAE Cyber Operations Community of Practice.
ACADEMICS AND STUDENT LIFE
Mississippi State students consistently earn honors such as the prestigious Harry S. Truman Scholarship, awarded for those who will enter public service, and, with 19 Truman Scholars to date, the university has been recognized as one of 38 Truman Honor Institution.
Recently initiated programs are providing opportunities to develop leadership potential and global study options.
The University’s Global Leadership Continuum provides “cradle-to-CEO” programming designed to develop leadership across a “global” spectrum that begins with high school and continues through the university experience and into professional life. Included are the Young Guns Leadership Camp for rising high school seniors; the Day One Leadership Community for incoming freshmen, focusing on shared academic and service experiences; and the highly competitive Appalachian Leadership Honors Program for sophomores and juniors.
To complement these efforts, the university has launched a minor in leadership studies open to students in all majors. A university honor code adopted in 2007 institutionalizes a campus culture of integrity and personal responsibility in academic studies. Through the Global Leadership Program, students may experience significantly expanded study abroad opportunities.
MISSISSIPPI STATE WOMEN’S BASKETBALL
THE MASCOT
Mississippi State University’s athletic teams are called Bulldogs, a name earned and maintained over the decades by the tough, tenacious play of student-athletes wearing the Maroon and White. The official school mascot is an American Kennel Club registered English Bulldog, given the inherited title of ‘Bully.’
As with most universities, Mississippi State University teams answered to different nicknames through the years. The first squads representing Mississippi A&M College were proud to be called Aggies. When the school officially became Mississippi State College in 1932, the nickname Maroons, for the uniform color, gained prominence. Bulldogs became the official title for State teams in 1961, not long after State College was granted university status.
Yet references to school teams and athletes as Bulldogs actually go back to early in the century, and this nickname was used almost interchangeably with both Aggies and Maroons, since at least 1905.
On November 30 of that year, the A&M football team shut out their arch-rivals from the University of Mississippi 11-0 in Jackson, Miss. The campus newspaper, The Reflector, reported: “After the game, filled with that emotion that accompanies every great victory, there was nothing left for the cadets to do but to complete the great victory by showing sympathy for the dead athletic spirit of the University, by having a military funeral parade.
“A coffin was secured, decorated with University colors and a bulldog pup placed on top. It was then placed on the shoulders of a dozen cadets, and the procession started down Capitol Street, preceded by the brass band playing a very pathetic funeral march.”
Other newspaper reports of the victory commented on the ‘bulldog’ style of play by the A&M eleven, and the Bulldog was soon publicly accepted as a school athletic symbol. Accounts of a 1926 pep rally in Meridian, Miss., had another bulldog parading with students.
OFFICIAL MASCOT IN 1935
Use as an official game mascot began in 1935 when coach Major Ralph Sasse, on ‘orders’ from his team, went to Memphis, Tenn., to select a bulldog. Ptolemy, a gift of the Edgar Webster family, was chosen and the Bulldogs promptly defeated Alabama 20-7.
A litter-mate of Ptolemy became the first mascot called ‘Bully’ shortly after Sasse’s team beat mighty Army 13-7 at West Point that same year - perhaps the greatest victory in MSU football history. But Bully I earned other fame the hard way, in 1939 when a campus bus cut short his career.
Days of campus mourning followed, as Bully lay in state in a glass coffin. A half-mile funeral procession accompanied by the Famous Maroon Band and three ROTC battalions went to Scott Field where Bully was buried under the bench at the 50-yard line. Even Life magazine covered the event. Other Bullys have since been buried by campus dorms, fraternity houses, and also at the football stadium.
For years Bully was a target for kidnappers, the last incident occurring prior to the 1974 State-Ole Miss game. The Bulldog team won anyway, 31-13. While early Bullys once roamed campus freely or lived in fraternities, today the official university mascot is housed at the School of Veterinary Medicine when not on duty at State home football games. For all their fierce appearance and reputation, today’s mascot bulldogs are good-natured, friendly animals and favorites with children.
A student wearing a Bulldog suit, also answering to Bully, is part of the cheerleading team and assists in stirring up State spirit at games and pep rallies.
The
it from scenes of competition, diehard State fans still celebrate Bulldog victories loudly and proudly with the distinctive sound of ringing cowbells.
The precise origin of the cowbell as a fixture of Mississippi State sports tradition remains unclear to this day. The best records have cowbells gradually introduced to the MSU sports scene in the late 1930s and early 1940s, coinciding with the ‘golden age’ of Mississippi State football success prior to World War II.
The most popular legend is that during a home football game between State and archrival Ole Miss, a jersey cow wandered onto the playing field. Mississippi State soundly whipped the Rebels that Saturday, and State College students immediately adopted the cow as a good luck charm.
Students are said to have continued bringing a cow to football games for a while, until the practice was eventually discontinued in favor of bringing just the cow’s bell.
Whatever the origin, it is certain by the 1950s cowbells were common at MSU games, and by the 1960s were established as the special symbol of MSU. Ironically, the cowbell’s popularity grew most rapidly during the long years when State football teams were rarely successful. Flaunting this anachronism from the ‘aggie’ days was a proud response by students and alumni to outsider scorn of the university’s ‘cow college’ history.
In the 1960s two professors, Earl W. Terrell and Ralph L. Reeves, obliged some students by welding handles on the bells so they could be rung with more convenience and authority. By 1963 the demand for these long-handled cowbells could not be filled by home workshops alone. So, at the suggestion of Reeves, the Student Association bought bells in bulk and the Industrial Education Club agreed to weld on handles. In 1964, the MSU Bookstore began marketing these cowbells with a portion of profits returning to these student organizations.
Today many styles of cowbells are available on campus and around Starkville, with the top-of-the-line being a heavy chrome-plated model with a full Bulldog figurine handle. But experts insist the best and loudest results are produced by a classic long-handled, bicycle-grip bell made of thinner and tightly-welded shells.
Cowbells decorate offices and homes of Mississippi State alumni, and are passed down through generations of Bulldog fans. But they were not heard at Southeastern Conference games - not legally, at least - since the 1974 adoption of a conference rule against ‘artificial noisemakers’ at football and basketball games. On a 9-1 vote, SEC schools ruled cowbells a disruption and banned them. The ban was lifted prior to the 2010 season.
The ban did little harm to the cowbell’s popularity, or to prevent cowbells from being heard outside stadiums in which the Bulldogs are playing. They are now heard at non-conference football contests, as well as other sporting events on campus.
MAROON AND WHITE
Maroon and White are the distinctive colors of Mississippi State University athletic teams, dating back over a century to the very first football game ever played by the school’s studentathletes.
On November 15, 1895, the first Mississippi A&M football team was preparing for a road trip to Jackson, Tenn., to play Southern Baptist University (now called Union University) the following day. Since every college was supposed to have its own uniform colors, the A&M student body requested that the school’s team select a suitable combination.
Considering this choice to be an honor, the inaugural State team gave the privilege to team captain W.M. Matthews. Accounts report that without hesitation Matthews chose Maroon and White.
In the 112 years since, every Mississippi State athlete has donned the Maroon and White in some sort of combination. Often a shade of gray has been added to the scheme, such as for the numerals. Briefly in the 1980s, the men’s and women’s basketball teams wore all-gray uniforms with maroon and white trim, while football has at times sported silver game pants, and baseball will often wear all gray road outfits.
Only once has an Mississippi State team appeared in any other color combination. In 1938, football coach Spike Nelson secretly had cardinal and gold uniforms made for State, a selection that did not sit well with the team or the college at the first game. Neither the uniforms nor Nelson were back for the next season.
THE COWBELL
most unique and certainly the most resounding symbol of Mississippi State University tradition is the cowbell. Despite decades of attempts by opponents and authorities to banish
Dr. Mark Keenum
UNIVERSITY PRESIDENT
Dr. Mark Everett Keenum became Mississippi State’s 19th president January 5, 2009, following a distinguished public service career.
During his tenure, Dr. Keenum has guided Mississippi State to unprecedented heights with an unwavering focus on students — preparing them for success in a rapidly changing world and instilling in them the timeless values of integrity, hard work, and respect. The university has experienced record enrollment growth — reaching a new all-time high in Fall 2021 with 23,086 students. The university is ranked as Mississippi’s Best Value College with graduates earning the highest average starting salary in the state, as well as mid-career salary. The Chronicle of Higher Education has designated Mississippi State as a “Great College To Work For” for the past six years after receiving top ratings from employees on workforce practices and policies. The Phi Beta Kappa Society, the nation’s oldest and most prestigious academic honor society, granted Mississippi State a chapter in 2018 after a rigorous, multi-year review. Only 10 percent of U.S. colleges and universities shelter Phi Beta Kappa chapters.
The campus has expanded and improved on Dr. Keenum’s watch. Mississippi State has completed or initiated capital improvements of $1.1 billion since 2009. Chief among these projects has been the $68 million expansion of Dudy Noble Field/Polk-DeMent Stadium, home to one of the most storied college baseball programs in America and the 2021 NCAA National Champions. The Dudy Noble Field project also included construction of the new Left Field Lofts, all of which opened in February 2019. The Mill at MSU — a $40 million, state-of-theart conference and meeting complex — has sparked a revitalization of a main communitycampus connector roadway. The Old Main Academic Center, a $41 million classroom building and multi-level parking garage, opened in August 2017. A $10 million expansion of Mitchell Memorial Library to house the Ulysses S. Grant Presidential Library and the Frank and Virginia Williams Collection of Lincolniana celebrated its official opening in 2017. A $60 million project featuring two residence halls and Nusz Hall, which houses the G.V. “Sonny” Montgomery Center for America’s Veterans, opened in 2016. In August 2019, the university and its partner, Greystar (formerly EdR Collegiate Housing), celebrated the grand opening of the innovative $67 million College View development. The first-of-its-kind project for any Mississippi university combines student housing with a mix of retail, commercial, and restaurant space. A $16.5 million Animal & Dairy Sciences Building opened in Fall 2019, and a $12.5 million Poultry Science Building opened in Fall 2020. The $34 million Rula Engineering and Science Complex on the university’s famed “Engineering Row” opened in Summer 2021. Construction of a $21 million Music Building is also underway. The university is in the planning phase for a $30 million advanced supercomputing data center that will be built in the Thad Cochran Research, Technology and Economic Development Park. Planning and design of a $55 million building for Kinesiology and the Center for Student Support and Autism Services and a $30 million expansion for the College of Architecture, Art and Design’s facilities are also underway. A transformational renovation of Humphrey Coliseum is scheduled to begin in Spring 2022. Additionally, the university is working with Sasaki, a leading interdisciplinary architecture, planning, landscape, and design firm, to update the campus master plan to address future growth and development.
Fundraising has reached all-time record levels in recent years. Since July 2010, the university has raised more than $1 billion in private support, and Infinite Impact – The Campaign for Mississippi State University achieved its historic goal well ahead of schedule in June 2020. The monumental support of 72,747 generous contributors enabled the university to reach this historic peak of philanthropy and exceed a $1 billion milestone previously never achieved by an educational institution in the state of Mississippi. Priority goals for Infinite Impact secured $247.4 million in scholarship support, including 75 percent growth in new endowed scholarships. Throughout his tenure, Dr. Keenum has been instrumental in expanding the MSU Promise Program, which provides need-based scholarship assistance to Mississippi students whose families have limited financial means. The number of endowed faculty chairs and professorships has also grown significantly.
Dr. Keenum has served as president of the Southeastern Conference. During his two-year term, he led the SEC Executive Committee, and he continues to serve on the SEC’s Content Committee that oversees programming of the highly successful ESPN-SEC Network. In 2018, he was named chairman of the College Football Playoff’s (CFP) Board of Managers. The CFP determines the national champion of the NCAA Division I Football Bowl Subdivision.
In 2018, he was elected to serve a six-year term on the Board of Trustees of the Mississippi Department of Archives and History, which is the second-oldest state department of archives and history in the country. A comprehensive historical agency founded in 1902, MDAH collects, preserves, and provides access to the archival resources of the state; administers museums and historic sites, including the new Museum of Mississippi History and the Mississippi Civil Rights Museum; and oversees statewide programs for historic preservation, government records management, and publications.
Dr. Keenum travels frequently to Washington, D.C., meeting with Congressional leaders and federal agency heads to pursue research opportunities and broaden the university’s influence on the national level. He has also worked closely with state leaders in Jackson in support of
higher education in Mississippi.
A Carnegie Foundation R1-Very High Research Activity Doctoral University, Mississippi State plays an integral role in economic development locally, statewide, and across the region. Its impact is further felt nationally and internationally through unique collaborative partnerships with peer institutions, business and industry, government agencies, and leading non-governmental organizations. Dr. Keenum leads these efforts because he understands the positive impact the nation’s major research universities can have in the diverse communities they serve. Mississippi State is ranked by the National Science Foundation as a “Top 100” research institution, and its annual research and development expenditures have exceeded $280 million. MSU R&D expenditures consistently account for more than half of all expenditures in the state. This research activity is playing an ever-increasing role in Mississippi’s overall economic development efforts.
In a recent economic impact analysis, EMSI — the highly-respected international economic modeling firm — determined that the university’s nearly $2 billion annual economic impact supports more than 29,000 jobs or one out of 55 jobs in the state of Mississippi. Additionally, EMSI found that for every one dollar of public funding invested in MSU, the university returns it, plus another $1.30, for a 130 percent return on the state’s investment.
A graduate of Mississippi State University with degrees in agricultural economics, Dr. Keenum’s interest in international food security has strengthened the university’s contributions to global economic sustainability. In 2014, he was appointed to the Board of Directors of the Foundation for Food and Agriculture Research, and now serves as chairman. That same year along with other university presidents, he signed the Presidents’ Commitment to Food and Nutrition Security at the United Nations in New York City. This marked the first time universities around the world began to share a collective focus on ending food insecurity.
Dr. Keenum’s passion for international engagement and transformative research and service has positioned Mississippi State as a leader in addressing global food security and poverty, among other critical issues. In 2014 and again in 2016, he was invited to speak at the United Nations in New York about the crucial roles public research universities play as the global community works to address critical challenges.
Dr. Keenum is immediate past chairman and former member of the Board for International Food and Agricultural Development (BIFAD). BIFAD was created in 1975 under Title XII (Famine Prevention and Freedom from Hunger) of the Foreign Assistance Act. Its mission is to draw on higher education’s scientific knowledge and expertise in global food security and world hunger to advise U.S. international assistance efforts in order to feed the world’s growing population that is projected to reach up to 10 billion people by the year 2050.
Dr. Keenum began his career at MSU as a faculty member with the Extension Service and the Department of Agricultural Economics. He went on to serve as chief of staff to U.S. Senator Thad Cochran in Washington, D.C. and was Under Secretary of the U.S. Department of Agriculture prior to returning home to Mississippi State.
A graduate of Corinth High School, Dr. Keenum earned an Associate in Arts degree from Northeast Mississippi Community College in Booneville and was a member of the Northeast Tigers football team. He is married to the former Rhonda Newman of Booneville, also an MSU graduate. They have four children: Rett, Mary Phillips, Katie and Torie.
