TRACK AND FIELD FACILITIES
MIKE SANDERS TRACK COMPLEX
On Friday, April 10, 2015, the Mississippi State University track was named the Mike Sanders Track Complex after former track standout Michael W. Sanders.
Over the past several years, the track stadium at MSU has seen many enhancements. A brick grandstand was added in 2013 and holds about 3,500 people.
MSU played host to the 2015 SEC Outdoor Track and Field Championships on May 14-16, at the newly-dedicated Mike Sanders Track Complex. Also during the 2015 season, MSU hosted the Border Clash and the Jace LaCoste Invitational. The facility now hosts the annual Al Schmidt Bulldog Relays and the Maroon and White Invite.
An MSU alumnus, Sanders began his college career in 1960 after receiving a dual scholarship for football and track and field. His football career ended due to injuries, but he was able to continue track and field during his time at State. In his sophomore year, he and fellow members of the MSU track team won the 1962 SEC championship. He is a member of the university’s M-Club for his achievements in track.
After college, Sanders has served on the boards for the Alumni Foundation, the MSU Foundation and the Bulldog Club. In 2014, Sanders was named the Mississippi State National Alumnus of the Year. In 2019, he received the Leo Seal Jr. M-Club Award, created to honor a former letterman for his or her outstanding loyalty, dedication and service to Mississippi State. In addition, the award recognizes a former letterman who has been successful in business and the community. Sanders is the third former letterman to receive this award, which is not given annually.
Today Sanders resides in Cleveland, Mississippi, with his wife Nan Long Sanders. Together the couple has two children, Michael W. Sanders and Amanda Sanders Turner, along with Sander’s daughter Ellen Sanders Voelkel and six grandchildren.
CARL MADDOX TRACK & INFIELD
Work was completed on MSU’s $3.2 million renovation to the Carl Maddox Track at W.O. Spencer Stadium in 2011 in time for several MSU home meets during that spring, including the SEC/Big 10 Challenge in March.
The state-of-the-art facility features nine lines, a steeplechase water jump and high jump, pole vault and long/triple jump pits, in addition to a javelin runway and shot put, hammer and discus throw rings.
W.O. SPENCER STADIUM
The dedication of the W.O. Spencer Track Stadium took place on Nov. 13, 1982. Named after two-time Olympian and former MSU track and field athlete W.O. Spencer. His generous donations gave the MSU track program a grandstand that seats 3,500 fans.
Spencer lettered four years in track and three in cross country under former coach E.C. “Billy” Hayes. During his time on the track and field team, he served as the 1922 season captain and was the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Association mile champion in 1921 and 1922.
In the 1924 Olympic Games in Paris, Spencer won gold in the mile relay team and finished third in the steeplechase in the 1928 games in Amsterdam. After his competition year Spencer went on to become the MSU track and field coach from 1936-1947, minus four years while serving on active military duty.
Spencer was installed in the Mississippi Sports Hall of Fame in Jackson in 1968 and, in 1971, was inducted into the MSU Sports Hall of Fame.
HOLLIMAN ATHLETIC CENTER
Originally opened in April 2005 as a home to Bulldog football, the 46,000-square foot Holliman Athletic Center now houses the track and field locker rooms, team lounge, meeting room and equipment room along with the Columbus Orthopaedic Sports Medicine Center.
Regarded as one of the best facilities in the nation, the MSU track and field team locker rooms and team lounge are located on the second floor of the facility and provide quick access to the Mike Sanders Track Complex. A hallway running between the areas highlights Bulldog greats from throughout the program’s history. A large equipment room and laundry room finish out the space.
On the ground floor of the building, the Columbus Orthopaedic Sports Medicine Center is the primary sports medicine facility for the track and field and tennis teams and is a secondary facility for soccer, softball, volleyball, and women’s golf. It also serves as an administrative hub for the sports medicine and performance department, including the department of counseling and sport psychology. The 4,500-square foot athletic training facility was made possible through anaming gift from the Columbus Orthopaedic Clinic, whose surgeons began handlingthe sports medicine needs of MSU student-athletes in 1981. Six of the orthopaedic surgeons at the clinic are State graduates themselves.

ZAC SELMON - DIRECTOR OF ATHLETICS
Mississippi State University President Mark E. Keenum named Zac Selmon — the scion of a legendary college football family and a rising star in athletics administration — as MSU’s 18th Director of Athletics on Jan. 13, 2023.
Selmon, a proven leader who has extensive experience at two Power Five universities and who understands and shares Mississippi State’s commitment to achieving and maintaining excellence in its Bulldog athletics programs, accepted the position as MSU’s athletics director after having an accomplished career at the University of Oklahoma on the executive leadership team. As deputy athletics director for external engagement and advancement, he led OU Athletics’ stakeholder relations including the Sooner Club and annual giving. Selmon provided sport oversight for football and led strategic communications, marketing, licensing, multi-media rights, brand management and fan engagement.
In his previous five-year position as senior associate athletics director for administration and development, Selmon led the fundraising strategy for OU Athletics’ $200 million capital campaign, setting annual giving records in 2018 and 2019. In 2020, philanthropic giving reached its highest in university athletics history. In September 2019, Selmon was appointed to the NCAA Football Rules Committee.
Selmon returned to Oklahoma as senior associate athletics director/chief of operations in July 2015 after serving as associate athletics director and special assistant to the athletics director at the University of North Carolina during the 2014-15 academic year.
As the Sooners’ senior associate athletics director/chief of operations, Selmon contributed to the department’s overall direction and culture through responsibilities related to leading OU’s strategic planning process and the implementation of specific initiatives, including the department’s diversity and inclusion programming. He also assisted in the strengthening of key stakeholder relationships, led sport administrator meetings, and facilitated additional projects all geared toward developing a world-class experience for Oklahoma student-athletes.
At UNC, Selmon’s duties included monitoring and tracking the athletics department’s strategic plan, representing the athletics director at meetings and on committees, assisting with internal communications, serving as liaison with external groups such as the ACC, NCAA and NACDA, and administering the department’s executive and senior staff meetings.
Prior to working at North Carolina, Selmon began his career in the OU Athletics Department as a graduate assistant in 2009 before holding the titles of assistant director of development, associate director of development and director of capital gifts.
At Wake Forest University, Selmon not only became a four-year starter at tight end for the Demon Deacons, but a four-year dean’s list scholar graduating in 2007 with a degree in religion and international studies. He also holds a 2010 OU master’s degree in education with an emphasis in intercollegiate athletics administration.
As a son and nephew of the famed “Selmon Brothers” (the University of Oklahoma’s Lucious, Lee Roy, and Dewey Selmon of Eufaula, Oklahoma), Zac Selmon has been an active part of a multi-generational effort to bring help and healing to those at home and abroad who struggle with poverty, homelessness, lack of education, and for many, a lack of hope. He and his sister Shannon are co-founders of the Shine Foundation, a nonprofit dedicated to serving those in need, especially children, at home and abroad.
Along with his celebrated family, Selmon has learned from and worked for two well-known and respected university athletics directors – OU’s Joe Castiglione and North Carolina’s Bubba Cunningham.
Selmon and his wife Rachel have two daughters, Shayne and Rylee.

In his six years as head coach, Woods has directly overseen 21 NCAA finalists, 49 All-American honors, three SEC Champions and six Olympians.
In addition to serving as head coach, Woods personally coaches Bulldog 800m great Marco Arop. Arop has seen multiple accolades under Woods’ tutelage, including the , the 2023 World Champion title, the 2022 World Championship bronze, multiple Diamond League golds, the Pan-American Games title, and multiple national and North American records in the 800m and 1000m. Most recently, Woods oversaw Arop in Paris at the 2024 Olympics, where he won the silver medal with the fourth-fastest time in world history.

Brandon McBride represented Canada at the Tokyo Olympics, his second Games, joining former teammate Arop. McBride earned the NCAA Indoor and Outdoor 800m title and the SEC title under Woods’s coaching.
Woods’ athletes have made significant rewrites to the university record book in his time as a coach at MSU. His athletes have rewritten the record book, as the top four outdoor and top five indoor times for the men’s 800m, and the No. 2 and No. 5 outdoor and No.1 and No. 3 indoor spots for the women, all athletes were coached by Woods. His staff has overseen 22 university records broken,

The first full season with Woods as head coach came in 2021. His team produced two All-Americans from the NCAA Indoor Championships while developing nine All-Americans for the Outdoor Championships. The men had three first-team All-Americans in the javelin. Woods saw four current and three former student-athletes compete at the USATF Olympic Trials, with six former athletes making their nations’ Olympic Teams for Tokyo. Woods joined the Team Canada staff as an assistant coach for Marco at the 2021 Games.
Woods’ first season was cut short by COVID-19. During the 2020 indoor season, Charlotte Cayton-Smith, Dejon Devroe and Jesse Henderson reached the finals

at the SEC Indoor Championships in College Station, but the outdoor season would be canceled, halting the State alumni’s first year at the head coach position.
Woods served as interim head coach during the 2019 season, after five seasons as a sprints and relays coach for the MSU men and women. In his time as an assistant, Woods coached Bulldog athletes to 17 All-American selections and two SEC championships. In 2018 alone, Woods’ athletes put 15 new marks among the top five in MSU history.
During his interim year, MSU’s men put together the most-decorated outdoor season in program history, claiming more SEC Athletes of the Week and USTFCCCA National Athletes of the Week than ever before along with four All-America accolades. The Bulldogs put six men on the podium at the SEC Championships, the most since State earned eight medals in 2003, they finished the conference meet with 57 points, their highest total since 2012. MSU’s eighth-place men’s SEC Outdoors finish was its best since 2015. Woods spearheaded the Bulldogs to nine medals, representing their most since 2003 on the men’s side.
In addition, a total of 28 men and women athletes qualified for the NCAA East Prelims, which was a program record. The Bulldog men broke two school records, including the oldest, untied, Championship-event record in the program’s record book at the time.
The highlight of the 2019 outdoor season came when The Bowerman semifinalist Peters led an MSU javelin sweep of the podium. Peters successfully defended his national title, becoming the first MSU athlete to claim consecutive national championships. He threw a personal-best 86.62m (284-2), breaking his own school, meet and national records. Peters landed three attempts beyond 84.00m and threw six collegiate all-time top-10 marks this year alone. State’s trio of Peters, Curtis Thompson and Tyriq Horsford was just the 11th sweep of any event podium in NCAA history. On the women’s side, Tiffany Flynn and Logan Boss both earned All-America status to close their storied careers. Flynn finished eighth in the triple jump with a leap of 13.32m, while Boss tied for 12th in the high jump, clearing 1.78m.
After guiding the Mississippi State men’s team to its third-highest point total in school history at the 2019 NCAA Outdoor Championships, Chris Woods was named head coach of the Bulldog men’s and women’s track and field teams, Director of Athletics John Cohen announced June 14, 2019.
Woods competed as a middle-distance athlete for the Maroon and White from 2005-08. As a student-athlete, Woods garnered two-time All-America honors and four-time All-SEC accolades.
Before coming to MSU, Woods served as head coach for the men’s and women’s cross country and track and field teams at Claflin University in Orangeburg, South Carolina.
Before his time with Claflin, Woods was instrumental in the success of Abilene Christian University’s track and field program as the men’s and
women’s long sprints and middle and long-distance coach. Under his direction at Abilene Christian, Woods aided his team to back-to-back NCAA Division II National Championships in men’s track and field. He oversaw 10 athletes to multiple All-America honors in his time with ACU.
A native of Covington, Georgia, Woods graduated from MSU in 2008 with a bachelor’s degree in clinical exercise physiology. Woods is married to former two-time Olympic sprinter Wanda Hutson. The couple has two sons, Trace and Cade.

FAST FACTS
With the addition of alumni Trent Zelden as an assistant coach, Thomas’ 2024 squad had record-breaking success in both the ring and runway. At the indoor SEC Championship, Jhordyn Stallworth and Roury McCloyen finished fifth and sixth in the shot put, and Tafada Wright made her first conference final in the weight throw. Thomas sent five athletes to the NCAA East First Round, the most since 2021, where all five qualified for the national championship. McCloyen and Stallworth were Thomas’ first shot put athletes to qualify for the NCAA Championships in her time at State, and the first ring throwers since 2012. The two earned second-team All-American Honors, with Ella Knott and Franck Di Sanza earning honorable mentions in the javelin. Remi Rougetet improved his performance from last year, earning sixth and first-team All-American honors in the javelin. McCloyen followed up on his national performance with the USATF U20 discus title, ending his season as a finalist at the World U20 Championships in the discus. Thomas also helped coach decathlete Peyton Bair to a national runner-up title at the national championships. Alumni Curtis Thompson and Anderson Peters qualified for their second Olympic Games, in which Peters took home bronze in the javelin.
The 2023 season saw success on both the conference and national stage. Thomas’ throwers earned 13 points at the SEC Outdoor championship in the javelin with topeight finishes from Tyriq Horsford in third, Franck Di Sanza in fifth and Remi Rougetet in sixth. Thomas also oversaw multi Peyton Bair to third-place finishes in both the indoor and outdoor conference championships. Rougetet and Horsford qualified for the NCAA championships in the javelin, with Rougetet earning a ninth-place finish and second-team All-American honors in his first NCAA appearance. In the postseason, Di Sanza earned the Switzerland national title in the javelin.
The 2022 season brought more success in the ring and on the runway for Thomas’ throwers. Jabari Bennett, a transfer from Tiffin, broke the indoor shotput record with 19.40m at the SEC Indoor Championships. This was the furthest mark in men’s indoor shot at State since 2012, and the furthest by any athlete coached by Thomas during her time at State. DJ Jónsson won gold at the SEC Outdoor Champions, earning First Team SEC honors for the second year. Thomas sent five athletes to the NCAA East First
Round, three in ring events and two in the javelin. Jhordyn Stallworth broke the outdoor shot put record with a 16.10m throw in her first East Preliminary shot put appearance. DJ Jónsson represented at the NCAA Championships, finishing seventh with a 76.29m throw. On the world stage, alumni Anderson Peters won the Championships in the javelin with a 90.54m throw.
The much-anticipated 2021 season was successful for Thomas and the team. Jhordyn Stallworth was named to the SEC All-Freshman Team for both shot put and discus at the conclusion of the season. Stallworth broke the school and freshman record at the SEC Championships in the discus with a throw of 51.01m. With the addition of graduate transfer Sindri Guðmundsson from Utah State and fellow Icelander DJ Jónsson coming in as a freshman, the JavU squad was as strong as ever. Guðmundsson and Jónsson threw to the fourth and fifth all-time marks during the season. Jónsson won gold and earned First Team SEC honors as well as being named to the Freshman Team at the conference championship. He was later named the Freshman Field Athlete of the Year. At the NCAA East Prelims, the Dawgs went 1-2-3 with Guðmundsson regaining his NCAA lead from Jónsson, making it seven weeks that he held the top mark. At the NCAA Championships in Eugene, Jónsson took second, Horsford fourth and Guðmundsson in fifth. Two of her former student-athletes were named to their country’s Olympic teams in Anderson Peters and Curtis Thompson, both competing in the javelin at the 2020 Olympics in Tokyo, Japan.
The 2020 season was cut short due to the COVID-19 pandemic, but not before Tiffaney Johnson and Alicia Viveros shattered their career bests at the Indoor SEC Championships.
After a successful season in 2019, April Thomas was promoted to associate head coach in June 2019. The leader of “JavU,” Thomas’ squad swept the men’s javelin podium at the 2019 NCAA Outdoor Championships, marking the first time since 1964 that a school had achieved the feat. Thomas was tabbed USTFCCCA South Region Men’s Assistant Coach of the Year in recognition of her squad’s success.
In the summer following that performance, back-to-back NCAA Champion Anderson Pe-

ters found success on the global stage. Peters won gold at the Pan American Games while shattering the Pan Am record with a personal-best and MSU-record throw of 87.31m. He went on the claim the IAAF World Championship in October of that year.
Thomas spent 12 seasons as an assistant coach overseeing MSU’s throwers. She has received national recognition for her expertise in guiding athletes in the javelin after leading the Bulldogs to become the only program in NCAA history to have three men throw the javelin over 80m, earning the title “Jav U”.
Thomas’ athletes earned eight top three finishes in the NCAA javelin championships from 2016 to 2021. No other school has combined for more than four in that span. Her throwers hold 28 marks in State’s outdoor record book and 13 on the indoor leaderboards. She has also guided six athletes to freshman records since arriving in Starkville.
In 2018, she tutored Peters to the 2018 SEC and NCAA javelin championships as a freshman, while Nico Quijera placed second at the NCAA championships before going on to claim the Spanish national title. Thomas also coached Curtis Thompson to a national title in 2016. Thompson won the 2018 USATF Championship, and at the 2018 NACAC Games, Peters and Thompson took home gold and silver, respectively.
In 2017, Thomas saw Quijera win his first NCAA runner-up title in the javelin, Brianna Smith shatter the Bulldogs’ indoor weight throw record for the first time and Haley Reynolds break State’s indoor shot put and outdoor discus records. In addition to his 2016 crown, Thompson won gold in the javelin at the NACAC U23 Games that year and broke the school record at the U.S. Olympic Trials where he came up just 12 centimeters shy of qualifying for the Rio Olympics.
Tautvydas Kieras qualified for the 2015 NCAA East Prelims in the discus throw. Kieras, who holds the school record at 60.03m, placed 23rd. That same year, Kieras posted the No. 5 mark in outdoor shot put in Bulldog history.
Under Thomas’s guidance in the shot put, Erica Bougard claimed the 2013 pentathlon NCAA Championship title with 4,399 points and the 2014 SEC Indoor Championship after a 4,448 point performance. Bougard finished a stellar Bulldog career as a 16time All-American and won the 2018 USATF Championship in the indoor pentathlon.
In 2013, Thomas coached honorable mention All-American Piotr Antosik in javelin, giving the Bulldogs a national finalist in the men’s javelin for the first time since 1923 and sparking the growth of State’s javelin program. Allison Storey also broke the MSU women’s javelin record in the same year after setting the Bulldogs’ freshman record in 2010.
Thomas led Favian Cowards to All-American honors in the 2012 season with a ninthplace finish at the NCAA Outdoor Championships in the hammer while breaking the MSU school record along the way. Cowards also won the Bulldogs’ first SEC Championship in the weight throw that year. That season also saw Ed Wesela post the No. 2 outdoor shot put and No. 3 indoor shot put marks in MSU history.
In 2010, Thomas helped coach LaQuinta Aaron to personal-best throws in the shot put that helped her earn provisional qualifications in the heptathlon for the 2010 NCAA Outdoor Championships. In 2009 heptathlete Marrissa Harris earned indoor and outdoor All-American and All-SEC accolades under Thomas’ shot put tutelage. Thomas came to MSU after coaching boys’ and girls’ shot put and discus at Knoxville (Tenn.) Catholic High School and with the Knoxville Track Club.
A native of Albany, Georgia, Thomas earned her degree in sociology from University of Tennessee in 2007.. Prior to her time in Knoxville, she competed at Cloud County (Kansas) Community College.
At the 2006 SEC Indoor Championships, Thomas finished as runner-up in the shot put and was named the Lady Vols’ Field Events MVP for the indoor season. She also has three other top five SEC finishes to her credit in the event. Thomas helped the Lady Vols win the 2005 SEC Indoor Championship and was part of Tennessee’s 2005 NCAA Mideast Regional team that captured the program’s first victory at that event.
