”BUILDING A POWERFUL, PROSPEROUS AND PROUD COMMUNITY, HEALTHY IN MIND, BODY AND SPIRIT.”

GAME CHANGING Haisla Nation Council is incredibly pleased to be celebrating the major investment decision by the joint ventures of the LNG Canada project. For almost a decade Haisla Nation has been working diligently with LNG Canada towards developing a project that is respectful of the environment and that provides tangible benefits for the region. Employment and educational opportunities to date have already supported Haisla members immensely. “The work that Haisla Nation Council has put in to developing a safe LNG industry – both with the current council and those which came before – has been considerable and thorough,” says Chief Councillor Crystal Smith. “We are confident that this project will be built in a way that provides benefits through many generations.”

Haisla Nation Council has developed a healthy and respectful relationship with LNG Canada over the years, a unique framework in industry and Indigenous relationships, which sets a standard for future project proposals with Haisla. “We’ve been included in the planning, and our input and experience has not only been heard but reflected in how the project has been established,” adds Smith. “Being involved to this level in the development of a major industrial project is an experience we have not had before.” Haisla Nation Council is also one of the 20 elected band councils which has signed a community and project agreement with the Coastal GasLink pipeline, which will feed LNG Canada with its natural gas.

CELEBRATION The announcement of LNG Canada’s decision late on October 1 prompted a rapid response to celebrate by Haisla Nation Council. With approximately one week to plan, staff prepared two major Haisla celebrations, one held at the Tamitik Arena in Kitimat, the other in Vancouver. The Tamitik arena saw approximately 600 Haisla members and their families turn out for a full evening of food, dancing, and speeches. The event was honoured by a blessing with muzilth adec (Verlie Nelson) and hemas Jasee (Sammy Robinson), plus performances by Spirit of the Kitlope, and the Men’s drumming group.

Representatives of LNG Canada were also in attendance to mark the occasion with Haisla, and representatives of the JGC Fluor BC LNG JV, which is the engineering and construction contractor for the project. “This success is for our members today, tomorrow, and many generations. Visions of having a share and a say, of being participants at the table and no longer being spectators...of the wealth of major industries in our Territory...each of you have all helped lead us to this point,” said Chief Councillor Crystal Smith at the Kitimat event. “Gukaloot, a change is coming. We’re

no longer under the full constraints of Indian and Northern Affairs. We are now able to become self-sufficient and a selfdetermining Nation.” Among the other speakers at the event was LNG Canada’s CEO Andy Calitz, who offered the promise of collaboration for the life of the project. “A share in the wealth of the resources of British Columbia is part of working with LNG Canada. And a say in how things are done will also be with your and with us forever,” he said. “LNG Canada is already

happening. Tonight, there are at least 1,000 people already working on the plant, on the pipeline.” Councillor Willard Grant also provided more context about Haisla employment with the project. “I went around today to check on how many…are working on site right now, and there is a total of 127 Haisla that are working on site right now,” he said. “And this is just the beginning. There is more to come for our people, there is more to look forward to, for our people.”

OUR GUESTS We were pleased to have guests from LNG Canada and JGC Fluor in attendance at the celebration. At top is LNG Canada CEO Andy Calitz. Below is their Director of External Relations Susannah Pierce

The Finance department has been receiving a lot of calls in relation to where their cheque was mailed to. The cheques were mailed to the last known address HNC had as of September 25th when the cheques were printed. In order for us to reissue a cheque, we are required to issue a Stop Payment Order to the bank. Once the order is placed, we need to wait a few days to make sure the cheque in question has not been cashed. Once confirmed, then we can reissue another cheque. Reissuing of COLA will be done once a week for the next few weeks, if need be. Thank you for your understanding and patience. NOTE: It is very important for you, as members, to keep your addresses up to date with HNC. We will update haisla.ca with an address change form soon, but in the meantime please send address changes to Deb Grant at assistantcomptroller@haisla.ca.

WINTER DRIVING

in KITIMAT

It’s time for winter driving in the Kitimat area. Here’s what you need to know: ● In the District of Kitimat, winter tires must be used between November 1 and March 31. ● On the highway, winter tires are mandatory between October 1 and April 30, and studded tires are permitted during the same. ● A Mud and Snow (M+S) tire with at least 3.5mm of tread depth is considered a winter tire, however it may not be adequate in local conditions. ● Tires with the snowflake in a mountain peak design are strongly recommended as they are designed for severe conditions. ● Snow tires: 1) provide better traction and braking in deep snow; 2) provide greater stability and control on slushy roads, and; 3) have features that allow better grip on ice. ● Enforcement under the Motor Vehicle Act is discretionary depending on the situations. 15
