Holden Jones celebrates great result in Australia Holden Jones, the son of Maureen Nyce, is proudly carrying the banners of Canada and the Haisla Nation, following an impressive showing at a cycling competition in Australia.

Holden races under a discipline called “Cross Country Olympic”, and is a first year junior racer in the U-19 XCO category.

Holden was a member of Team Canada at UCI World Championships Mountain Bike Race, in Cairns, Australia, from September 4 to 10. He came away with an amazing third-place finish in the competition.

Reflecting on memories of the Haisla Cultural Camp this past summer I want to start by thanking everyone who made the first Haisla Cultural Camp happen, including Angie Maitland, Brenda Bouzane, Eric Bottah, Mike Jacobs & the Fisheries Department, and Haisla Nation Council. These wonderful people did the planning, legalities, set up, and funding of the camp.

Thank you to Jennifer Legace, who joined the camp as our on-site youth counsellor. Thanks to our cooks, Bea and Leah Wilson, everyone was able to enjoy freshly caught crab, prawns, fish, as well as fried bread, baking powder biscuits, herring eggs, and boiled fish.

Without them and their dedication the camp would not have been the success that it was.

I was there and was able to witness firsthand all of the fun the youth had and the memories that were made.

Along with the fun times came the learning 4

moments, they had the chance to experience some of the traditional Haisla practices.

The participants were able to make their own drums, go canoeing, hike to the hot springs, and make cedar roses or headbands with Bea Windsor.

Teresa Windsor joined us for a morning of language lessons. They were also able to go long-lining for halibut and set crab traps with Trevor Amos, Len Bolton, and Edmund Grant.

Under the watchful eye and teachings of Bea Wilson, Leah, Brenda and Trevor they cut fish that they then canned and smoked for halfdried and t'alos.

Shelley Bolton, leader of Spirit of the Kitlope group, along with Terry Nyce, visited the camp for a day to teach drumming and singing.

Getting to see the enjoyment the youth got out of these activities leaves me with no doubt that the camp was worth all the work that was put in to it.

Fisheries welcomed the work of their summer student, Byron The Haisla Fisheries Department welcomed our Summer Student, Byron Olsen-Grant. Byron was a great addition to our team. He participated in all aspects of our whirl wind of projects! Byron did cabin work, he helped set up and take down the Cultural Camp at Weewa, he successfully completed his swift water training, he did stream assessments where he

identified and counted fish in the streams. Byron learned how to set transects, he collected and identified invertebrate samples for one of our fish habitat restoration projects. He experienced the terrifying rush of going into Foch Lagoon. Byron ended off the season with a trip to the pristine Kitlope watershed. Thank you for your hard work Byron!

All in a day’s work The rest of the staff juggled their time doing Fish Habitat restoration work, stream assessments, monitored the commercial salmon opening in area 6 and they also did monitoring in Kemano.

Once word came that funding was available for a youth cultural camp, the Haisla Fisheries crew jumped right in. In three months they had the site cleared and prepped.

Yes. Following feedback from Haisla members, there will be an elder and a youth representative appointed by Trustees. These positions will serve in an advisory, and non-voting, capacity.

What training will Trustees be provided?

National Aboriginal Trust Officer's Association Trustee online training will be required to be completed within the first nine months of a Trustee being elected to serve on the Trust. Once enrolled the Trustees have 4 months to complete the training which requires a commitment of approximately 60 hours in total. The Administrative Trustee will also provide training to the Trustees as will the other service providers as needed.

Support through expressive arts Creating a foundation and enhancement for community health and wellness is of great importance to me as a Haisla member, I have been educated in Residential school and the effects, also how it has a negative impact to aboriginal communities. The importance for healing and revitalization in the Haisla community has my creativity peaked to support healing by identifying who we are as a people, through culture and wellness. The need for continuity has my creativity piqued to building a healthy community. I see that there is a current need in Aboriginal communities with a high rate of cancer, suicide, and addictions. I have recently graduated from the Vancouver School of Expressive Arts Therapy and find that a good

A youth basketball camp hosted by the Haisla Nation, with the Indigenous Sport, Physical Activity, and Recretaion Council, was held at Mount Elizabeth Middle Secondary School September 9 to 10. The successful and effective camp was facilitated by Adelia Paul, with Steve Beauchamp.

Sports award up for grabs by youth The Indigenous Sport, Physical Activity & Recreation Council (I¡SPARC), in collaboration with the Province of British Columbia, is launching the nomination process for the 2017 Premier's Award for Aboriginal Youth Excellence in Sport.

Nominations are open to Indigenous athletes (First Nations, MĂŠtis and Inuit) under 25 years of age who are training and competing in performance sport; display strong leadership 12

qualities; are committed to pursuing higher education; and serve as community role models .
