APPY HOLIDAYS! I CAN’T BELIEVE IT’S DECEMBER ALREADY… AND TIME FOR OUR ANNUAL HOLIDAY GIFT GUIDE. I RECALL FOND MEMORIES FROM MY CHILDHOOD, FLIPPING THROUGH THE GLOSSY HOLIDAY GIFT GUIDES THAT CAME IN THE MAIL TO PO BOX 68. LATER, WE MADE LISTS FOR “SANTA” AND ON CHRISTMAS MORNING, MANY OF THE GIFTS UNDER THE TREE WERE MARKED “FROM SANTA.” This year, as I write this, there’s an 18-foot-tall tree in the foyer at home that’s vying for me to wrap up the final details of the Gift Guide and string about 5,000 lights on it. It’s almost time to put on the Christmas music, pour myself a bit of bubbly and open the tubs that store the lights and ornaments. During a season of thanksgiving that leads into the most magical time of the year, I’m immensely grateful for the opportunity to curate Polo Lifestyles and the Gift Guide this month. It was our philanthropy contributor and copy editor, Bill Smith, who suggested adding a charitable angle to our collection of extravagant gift ideas. Our spirituality contributor, Jyoti Paintel, echoes that in her multi-part series about selflessness that continues this month. She interviewed humanitarians from varied backgrounds, each of whom use their resources to improve the lives of countless others. A special piece this month, “The Millionaire Who Saves Migrants at Sea,” brought me to the verge of tears here in my comfortable, warm office. There is no place for bigotry in charity, said Christopher Catrambone, whose efforts have saved thousand stranded in the freezing waters. “If you allow your neighbor to die in your backyard, you are responsible for that death.” Powerful words – and a powerful call to action during the holiday season. So, while we’re hitting the pavement, ducking in and out of boutiques and shops, getting dressed up to go out, and gathering around the dinner table, my hope it that each of us – blessed beyond measure – will remember the call to help in any and every way we can. As Jyoti so succinctly put it, you don’t need to give a lot; you need a lot of people to give a little to make a difference. E WAITED A LONG TIME FOR A PARTY LIKE THE FIVE-CITY GRAND SERIES TOUR CELEBRATING GLENFIDDICH’S GRANDE COUROUNNE LABEL – AND NO ONE COULD ARGUE THAT WE DIDN’T DESERVE IT.
With that in mind, the stage was planned and set for a masquerade party the likes of which we hadn’t enjoyed in ages.
Think Marie Antoinette, towering florals, glimmering gold furniture and accents, a welcome team of stags – the iconic Glenfiddich silhouette – and tastings of the scotch whisky maker’s most exclusive offering yet. Five lucky cities – Chicago, Los Angeles, New York City, Miami and Dallas – hosted the Grand Series Tour stops at some of the most luxurious addresses in town. Glenfiddich pulled out all of the stops and spared no detail for its first post-pandemic event – and we appreciated every moment of it. Personally
selected VIP guests were invited to the brand’s masquerade ball, encouraged to dress our best and don a (masquerade) mask for the festivities. It was socialand selfie-heaven for those of us who hadn’t been invited to a Glenfiddich event in almost two years. Everywhere we looked was an Instagramable moment: a vignette to capture, the perfect lighting and background. “Reactions (of party-goers) were so amazing,” said Director of Luxury North America for William Grant & Sons, Patricia Vasconcelos.

By the time the five-city tour was completed, over 1,000 influencers, social media personalities, bar managers and bartenders had tasted the label’s most exclusive scotch whisky. Glenfiddich’s Brand Ambassador-Midwest Kevin Canchola described his responsibility as “getting liquid to lips.” There are tons of misnomers about scotch whisky, he said. “Glenfiddich is so palatable and the Grande Couronne is so opulent. You really just have to taste it.” Just five years ago, Glenfiddich was focusing its tastings in Irish pubs. “This is a huge advancement into a luxury space for Glenfiddich,” said Dave Allardice, brand ambassador for the West Coast. “There are no stereotypes when it comes to the Grand Series. ITH THE FESTIVE SEASON AHEAD OF US, THERE’S A LOT OF FEASTING TO BE DONE. AND, FOR IT TO BE DONE PROPERLY — ENJOYED, AND NOT JUST ENDURED — THERE ARE SOME DOS AND DON’TS.
Generally, I tend not to be so prescriptive. But, around this time of the year, I do find myself getting a little bit list-y, the result of both my enthusiasm for the season and the wisdom I’ve accumulated over the years (and years) of hosting and eating. And as anyone who prepares feasts knows, there’s a lot of planning, shopping, chopping and cooking to be done. To be useful, festive feast planning needs to be focused. As such, let’s stick to brunch. Here are some things you want from a festive brunch — a recipe for brunch planning, if you like. As with all good recipes, you can take or leave what you like. You want the main to be special enough to be served with a “ta-da!” but not steal the show entirely. It wants to be a little different, but your day shouldn’t peak before mid-afternoon. Think of pancakes: They’re something beyond the everyday but don’t totally ruin the mood (or the will to cook anything else that day). You want the meal to fill everyone enough so that they leave the kitchen page 70
(and you) alone for a few hours, but not so much that they’re done eating for the day. You want it to be seasonal and comforting, but not so much that people want to go straight back to bed afterward. This is why eggs feature so often at brunch: They’re perfect at fueling without weighing you down. You want it to be a balance of sweet and savory. Not so sweet that it leaves you reeling but sweet enough to ease people into the day and not feel too much like, well, lunch. But savory as well, since brunch is between breakfast and lunch. This is why strips of bacon or fried halloumi make so much sense with those pancakes — to counter all the maple syrup sweetness. If those are a few things you do want from your festive brunch, here are a
couple of things you don’t. Again, take it or leave it as you wish. You don’t want brunch to take hours of preparation beforehand and hours of clearing and washing up afterward. This is where one-pot (or pan or tray) dishes come so much into their own: eggy omelets or frittatas, or the eggs I’ve been braising in various shakshukas for as long as I’ve been making brunch. You don’t want to have to start cooking hours before brunch is ready. While keeping something on the stove or in the oven for four hours before supper isn’t an inconvenience, setting the alarm for 6 a.m. for a supposedly relaxed brunch is. Dishes where elements can be prepared the day before are always great here: batters that can be mixed early and left overnight; the tomato and red pep-

per base for the shakshuka, which can sit in the fridge for a day or two; fruit cooked down for a compote, ready to be swirled through thick yogurt. Everyone’s normal is different, I know, as are everyone’s traditions. But those are some of my rules, and a dish of fivespiced squash in cheesy custard delivers
everything I want. And it’s what I’ll be making for brunch this season: I’ll be roasting the squash a day ahead, ready for the custard to be made up, poured over and quickly baked that morning. I’ll be happy not to have used every pot and pan in my kitchen and delighted to see guests gathering around for equal amounts of sweet squash and savory
custard. Crucially, having done everything I need to do, I’ll be able to pull up a chair myself, to enjoy and be part of the meal. And being able to be relaxed and in the moment: Secretly, that’s the most important ingredient for a happy, festive meal. page 71

The lives of Patrizia and Maurizio Gucci, the head of Gucci, come to the silver screen in a murder case so camp, it’s Gucci. Based on the eponymous book, Lady Gaga and Adam Driver are accompanied by Jared Leto and Al Pacino in this Ridley Scott-directed film in theaters now.
comedy film features an ensemble cast that includes Keira Knightley, Lily-Rose Depp, Roman Griffin Davis, Matthew Goode, and more. Silent Night is set to hit theaters on December 3. MONEY HEIST The crime drama series is set to release part two of its fifth season in early December. This is the final part of the critically acclaimed Netflix series, and several of these final episodes will focus on the heist crew’s plan to escape from the police. Money Heist season 5 volume 2 premieres on Netflix on December 3. AND JUST LIKE THAT
SILENT NIGHT Silent Night focuses on a family’s last Christmas dinner together as they await their impending doom. This dark
West Side Story hits theaters on December 10. SPIDER MAN: NO WAY HOME After his identity is revealed to the world, Peter Parker (Tom Holland) seeks help from Doctor Strange (Benedict Cumberbatch) to restore his secret identity, only things don’t go according to plan. The final installment of this Spider-Man film series will introduce Marvel›s «multiverse» and bring back several villains from the previous Spider-Man franchises, including Dr. Otto Gunther Octavius, Green Goblin, and Lizard. Spider-Man: No Way Home hits theaters on December 17.
THE HARDER THEY FALL
In a reverse-Kill Bill storyline, instead of one outlaw chasing down a gang, a gang of outlaws chase down an enemy in this Western flick. Released November 3, The Harder They Fall has already received rave critic reviews since its film festival premiere in October. It stars Regina King, Zazie Beets, Idris Elba, and Johnathan Majors.

FEW YEARS AGO, CHRISTOPHER CATRAMBONE, A GARRULOUS AMERICAN ENTREPRENEUR WHO HAD SPENT ALMOST A DECADE TRAVELING THE WORLD TO BUILD A MULTI-MILLION-DOLLAR COMPANY, DECIDED TO TAKE A BREAK. Tangiers Group, which Catrambone runs with his wife Regina, provides insurance in conflict zones – to US military subcontractors, NGO workers, journalists and missionaries, among others. The business, rooted in such page 80
war-wrecked countries as Iraq and Afghanistan, was flourishing. But that summer, Catrambone decided, the company could take care of itself for three weeks. Catrambone and Regina, along with Regina’s teenage daughter Maria Luisa, set off from their home on the Mediterranean island of Malta, aboard a glistening white 24-meter chartered motor yacht with Burmese teak decking and varnished Tanganyika walnut joinery. As they motored out of Valetta’s spectacular Grand Harbour – past the Che Guevara 2, a sleek 30-meter super-yacht that belonged to the family of the deposed Libyan dictator Muammar Gaddafi – a Maltese armed forces veter-
an, Marco Cauchi, was at the wheel, and an old friend of Catrambone’s, the Texan chef Simon Templer, was there to cook and have a holiday. “I love going out on these yearly cruises with my family,” Catrambone said. “We can’t escape each other and get on our iPhones.” Malta, one of the European Union’s most southerly points, was an ideal starting place for a three-week cruise to Tunisia and along the coast of Sicily, not far from Calabria, the southern toe of Italy. This is where Catrambone met Regina nine years ago. He had gone to search for his family roots in the place his great-grandfather left for America in the early 19th century and ended up living down the road from Regina’s mother.

In July, they sailed away from Lampedusa, a small Italian island southwest of Malta that lies even closer to North Africa. A business meeting in Tunisia prevented them staying to see Pope Francis celebrate a mass on the island, devoted to the migrants who made the dangerous crossing to southern Europe from Libya in cheap inflatable motorboats and rickety fishing vessels. Some 500 had drowned en route in 2012 alone. Pope Francis lambasted the rich world for its indifference to other people’s suffering: “It doesn’t affect us. It doesn’t interest us. It’s not our business.” As they headed south, Regina spotted a beige winter jacket bobbing in the water. Cauchi, who had once run Malta’s maritime search and rescue operations, told her it may have come from a sunken migrant boat. Such tragedies were not new, and only a few months later, the pope’s warnings would be confirmed yet again, when 380 refugees – many from Syria and Eritrea – drowned over the course of only eight days, most within a quarter-mile of Lampedusa. Migrant deaths became an obsessive topic of conversation on the yacht, and Catrambone,
typically, found himself looking for a solution. “It makes you think like: ‘Wow! Look at me out here cruising on my boat, at the same time people are out there dying,” he said. “So, our heaven is their hell, right? Our paradise is their hell.” Catrambone’s business includes, he says, both caring for “heroic” wounded conflict-zone workers and being part of the financial arm of war. He is coy about his worth, but Bloomberg reports he made his first $10m by the age of 30. His company covers everything from healthcare to emergency evacuations to kidnapping, while Catrambone styles himself “a humanitarian, entrepreneur and adventurer.” After graduating from a local university, McNeese State, at the age of 20, he was hired and trained by a company that investigated insurance claims. By 26, he had worked as a private eye, a political campaign manager for a Louisiana court official, as an aide in Congress, and as the co-owner of a Cajun riverboat bar serving high-octane bloody Marys, jambalaya and gumbo in the U.S. Virgin Islands.
On the yacht, Cauchi – an amiable, stocky, sun-weathered 48-year-old – told Catrambone stories of rescues. Bodies fished out of the sea can haunt you. Martin Xuereb – a former brigadier who had been Cauchi’s boss as head of Malta’s armed services and would later work with the Catrambones – still recalls watching a body bag being unzipped on a patrol boat several years ago. “It was this child, maybe seven or eight, with his fists clenched next to his face and his eyes wide open,” he told me. But what could one individual, or one wealthy family, do? Money buys many things, but can it stop people drowning in their hundreds and thousands? By the end of the cruise, Catrambone had decided to set up his own search and rescue operation. As he saw it, he was already in the business of saving lives in conflict zones: “I rescue people for money in my other job,” he told me. “I know what to do.” His Tangiers Group is privately owned, making it hard to check his claim that it gives “the best medical treatment in the world;” he brushed off questions regarding a few old complaints I had found on the Internet from page 81

community. If you allow your neighbor to die in your backyard, then you are responsible for that death.”
But there is certainly nothing phony about Catrambone’s passion for saving migrants. He once lost a home in a natural disaster, when Hurricane Katrina devastated New Orleans’ Ninth Ward in 2005, flooding the building beside the St. Charles Avenue tram line where both he and Templer lived.
Since that summer on the yacht, Catrambones has sailed some of the roughest international waters in the world, rescuing immigrants off the coasts of some of the most desperate countries in the world. All that requires a lot of money. Catrambone knows one of his problems is that, unlike many other wealthy individuals, he is at the action end of the philanthropy chain. Most set up foundations to finance political advocacy or donate to existing NGOs, many of which have large memberships. He and Regina are wary of being seen as an eccentric millionaire’s hobby, making it harder to raise money and awareness.
Catrambone saw the migrants as either desperate, entrepreneurial, or both – not too different from his own great-grandfather. He also knew many of the places they were escaping from. “Every major economy has had their hands in Africa, and they have had their hands in the Middle East as well,” he told me. “Our policies have an equal and opposite reaction. You go in. And now they come in.” But Catrambone is not interested in politics or advocacy. For him, the problem is saving lives, based on a simple and typically candid analysis. “If you are against saving lives at sea then you are a bigot and you don’t even belong in our

tion for raising funds. Cooperation, Catrambone says, is the future. Catrambone has also thought of seeking funding from the merchant marine industry, which loses money every time a cargo vessel or oil tanker is ordered to a rescue. Whatever the future holds, nothing can change the fact that the Catrambones – initially self-financed, freelance operators – have set both a precedent and, having never lost a life, a standard. Those who care about migrants drowning, Catrambone insists, no longer have to wait for governments to act. He had already told me that if the family business ever went down, he and Regina would have no regrets about spending so much time and money. “A lot of people say: ‘Oh, look at the millionaires! They’ve spent a lot of money’,” he said. “I’ve invested my life into this, and my family has invested our savings. This is important for us, and we believe in it. And you know what, if I am poor one day and I’m out in the street, well so be it. But we did this. And we are proud of it. I will never take anything back.”

bathed in pink and purple marquee lights. It was hard to escape the feeling that the whole thing was a movie and everyone there just a character in it. That, after 18 months of living through screens, the boundaries between fashion and celluloid fantasy had finally collapsed, split down the seams.
A full city block had been cordoned off, each side of the Walk of Stars lined with hundreds of director’s chairs in signature Gucci canvas. Gwyneth Paltrow, in a new version of the red velvet Gucci suit she wore to the VMAs in 1996, schmoozed with Dakota Johnson (in bristling black paillettes), who happens to be dating her ex-husband. Nearby sat Salma Hayek Pinault, in a silver and blue sequined shirtdress, who stars in “House
of Gucci” and is married to FrançoisHenri Pinault, the chief executive of Kering, which owns real Gucci.
Jared Leto, who is a Michele muse, and also in “House of Gucci,” walked the runway in white denim, aviators and a double-breasted blazer. So did Miranda July, in a faux fur-trimmed strawberry cardigan, big Gucci logo briefs and stockings. On the sidelines, Billie Eilish (in a crystal skullcap) and Miley Cyrus (in sapphire fringe and butter yellow feathers) applauded. “It’s a dream come true,” Michele said in a news conference after the show, of why he had decided to eschew Milan for Los Angeles. “There was no better place to restart.”

It was back in May 2020, after all, when much of the world was self-isolating and the fashion world itself was in crisis, that Michele had first declared a rethink of the industry system, stepping off the four-city collections track and abandoning old categories of fall and spring. Since then, and perhaps more than any other designer, he has resolutely hewed to a separate path: creating “Guccifest,” a mini film festival complete with a Gus Van Sant-directed Gucci mini-series; “hacking” into Balenciaga in April (and letting Balenciaga’s designer,

Demna Gvasalia, hack him right back). Coming to Hollywood, which Michele called “the American Olympus,” to come back to the runway was a logical next step. Not just because of the stories his mother used to tell him about Hollywood that inspired him to want to create clothes. Or because, as Michele said, Gucci has deep roots in the jet-set and the larger-than-life, or because the brand has been sponsoring the annual LACMA gala for many years.
But because increasingly the traditional gravitational and social rules of what to wear when and where no longer apply, and a lot of that is thanks to Michele’s work at Gucci. He routinely ignores old ideas about day and night or fancy and sporty or men and women, hopscotches through historical reference, and ultimately builds his characters in a way that used to be available only in the movies — or acknowledged only in the movies. His clothes are unabashedly costume — they revel in the joy of playing dress-

up, rather than pushing a silhouette forward or exploring construction. He designs at a pitch of maximalist emotion rather than modernism. (To say his collections look like the ultimate vintage store is a legitimate complaint.)
and the era of Edith Head and Adrian, when costume designers were also celebrity designers because they understood that life, as much as the world, is a stage, and everyone is dressing for their entrance, darling.
So this time ’round there were Marilyn Monroe silver and gold goddess pleats and Rita Hayworth-worthy lacy nightgowns; souvenir palm tree-print shirts and just-off-the-bus cotton lawn and cowboy hats; Elizabeth Taylor Cleopatra gowns and Joan Crawford shoulders. There were the variables of the back lot
That’s why Michele put his show in the middle of Hollywood Boulevard: to underscore the fact that the sheer act of getting ready to go out and get some milk is a performance of self. Especially now that any moment could end up online and everybody is the director of their own social media series.
And maybe then you want to throw on a big fake fur chubby over your corset. Sport a three-piece suit in mint green or shell-pink satin with big fake orchids on the lapel. Wear knit bike shorts under a yachting blazer with cowboy boots. Whatever! Add a sparkling cat mask. Or maybe a feather boa. It’s ridiculous (it is). It’s a blast (it is). Then strut out down the center of a city street as spotlights strafe the sky. And let everyone watching wonder what scene, exactly, this is.

LIKE IT OR NOT, THANKS TO GENERATION Z TIKTOKERS’ OBSESSION WITH THE Y2K ERA AND CELEBRITY STYLE ICONS EMBRACING THE NOSTALGIC TRENDS. And unironically, the comeback is arriving just in time to follow the “20-year rule,” otherwise known as the period of time it takes for a trend to fizzle out and be seen as tacky before becoming chic again. The 20-year rule has held true for decades, exemplified by fashion in the 90s being heavily inspired by the trends of the 70s. As journalist Anne Donahue wrote in Fashion Magazine, “Without
the seventies—without the risks, the loudness, and the willingness to show off one’s midriff, the nineties wouldn’t have rebelled against the eighties by so effectively stripping down the decade’s power suits and shoulder pads.” But why do fashion trends fall perfectly into such a cyclical pattern? Trend forecaster and designer Geraldine Wharry attributes it to designers reflecting on their past while creating new pieces. “Fashion is about storytelling and drama and theatricality, so there’s always the element of pulling stories from the past,” she told Thread Magazine. “It’s a starting point for designers to look to past references for design inspiration. There’s something familiar and comfort-

ing about looking back.” Y2K fashion can be seen across TikTok, the social media platform that– according to eMarketer– has a larger number of Gen Z users in the US than Instagram. Members of Gen Z consider the early 2000s as an iconic era filled with Paris Hilton, flip phones, and Juicy Couture tracksuits. It’s a time that many Gen Zers remember in rose-colored glasses– that is, if they remember it at all– as a simpler existence sans social media, the climate crisis, and a polarizing political climate. Thus, they embrace the trends from that time in an attempt to create their own little fashion utopia to distract them from the issues that plague today’s society. And, through the power of TikTok and with the help of
some staple fashionable celebrities, have managed to make them cool again. British pop star Dua Lipa, for example, is one celebrity whose style is heavily influenced by early 2000s trends. Colorful baby tees, fuzzy bucket hats, sparkly eyeshadow and butterfly clips are staples in her wardrobe, as seen on her Instagram account and her red-carpet appearances. Model Hailey Bieber, who’s widely considered a style icon to many fashion-forward young people, is constantly spotted sporting trucker hats, chunky beaded necklaces, and low-rise jeans. “I personally never thought I’d see trends like funky hair clips and baby tees make a comeback, especially since
I never really considered them that cute [before this year],” 21-year-old Julia Mervis explained. “But seeing them all over TikTok and on all these celebrities not only changed my mind but also inspired me on how to incorporate them into my own outfits.” While the days of Christina Aguilera’s streaky black and platinum blonde hair and Lindsay Lohan partying with Paris Hilton and Britney Spears may be over, the fashion trends that existed among them are back with a vengeance. So go dig up some old bandannas and velour sweat suits and join the wave…and be sure to save your current trendy clothes for when they’re back in style in two decades. page 141

It’s for this reason and many others that Salomon feels compelled to use Haitian art as an avenue to talk about her homeland. “I do what I have to do… I feel it’s my duty,” she said. “My father taught me to ‘Help where you can.’” The virtual exhibit isn’t just filled with Haitian masters like Bernard Séjourné, Célestin Faustin, Michèle Manuel and Luckner Lazard. Artists like Frantz Zephirin, who regularly pops up on the social scene in Port-au-Prince, whose complex vaudou-inspired creations are painted up and over the edge of the frame are among the hallowed curation. There has been a significant and unfortunate brain drain in Haiti in the artist’s community, said Nader-Salomon, referencing even today’s headlines about Haitian immigrants walking from South America to the Texas-Mexico border in search of a better life. “One of the reasons for the Centre d’Art exhibition is to demonstrate to youth in Haiti that they have a chance, through the Centre d’Art, to pursue a career in their homeland,” she said. The Centre d’Art, for generations, has provided a space of respect and dignity for young, budding artists. Basquiat’s genius and success in the 1980s art scene in and around New York set a precedent for supply and demand of Haitian art, which had been in decline. “The diaspora community of artists is incredibly important to Haitian art, and it’s also unique, different,” said Nader-Salomon. “With every piece of art that sells in the diaspora, we know that culturally, the proceeds from that sale make its way back to Haiti, affecting the lives of family and extended family there.” In 2010, the earthquake that made over 1 million people homeless in and around Port-au-Prince also destroyed an untold number of pieces of art. The Wall Street Journal reported that same year that the Nader family collection alone lost 10,000 pieces of Haitian art during the earthquake. Experts in restoration from UNESCO, Yale and Harvard rushed into Haiti, eager to save and restore what could be saved. Today, emerging artists from all Haitian backgrounds continue to track down Salomon in New York. “(Young artists) find me,” she said. “And for page 150
me, it’s really the-more-the-merrier. There are 1.9 million active art buyers right now in the world. We’re marketing (Haitian art) directly to them to enlarge the market. IS THE SEASON TO FOURWHEEL DRIVE, AND WHAT BETTER WAY THAN IN THE DBX, ASTON MARTIN LAGONDA’S LATEST LUXURIOUS, PREMIUM SUV. Aston, known for its reputation as the cars to the bad boys (and some girls), sees the generational need continue as luxury premium auto manufacturers race to market with their re-envisioned ideas speaking to our consumer needs – expensive, flashy family SUVs. We all know we can’t fit two kids plus car seats, the family golden retriever, yoga mats and towels, the Birkin, three Whole Foods bags and your matcha latté in your two-seat speedster… so Aston said page 154
– ‘Damn Babe, eXhale!!’ Or DBX for short. Kicking off with their cross-US tour, the DBX made a stop in The Hamptons, accompanied by their representing dealer, Long Island Sports Cars, who also represents McLaren at their impressive Manhasset Showroom on Long Island. Inviting guests to drive in private 30-minute appointment slots, taking off from The Baker House 1650, a glamorous bed and breakfast befitting of a Bond film. Attendees were welcomed to a fully catered lunch by famed chef, Diane Hendricks, and also had a 1:1 whisky tasting provided by The Glenrothes - following the test drives of course. With a driveway lined with expensive SUVs that weren’t ours, and full coverage on the personal insurance policy, we hopped in - and here is what we thought: upon entering the DBX, you aren’t sure if you are in a sports car or SUV. The designers have done quite well to trick the sensory perception into
believing you are in a floating state of both, which works. When opening it up on the road, you immediately know this amazing SUV holds a 4.0-liter twin-turbo V8 that’s also found in the DB11 and the Vantage models. In the DBX, the V8 gets upgraded turbochargers to push output to 542 hp and 516 lb-ft of torque. Aston has quoted a 0-60 mph time of 4.3 seconds and a top speed of 181 mph, which are very impressive figures for an SUV that pushes the scale at 4,940 pounds. With its power routed through a nine-speed automatic transmission to a rear-biased, all-wheel-drive system, it also features an electronically controlled, limited-slip rear differential – allowing nearly all the to power go to the rear wheels if, and when, needed. While its girth is on the wider side, it has been noted to hinder some of the immediate acceleration capability which you might find in the Vantage. But once you open the throttle, your speedometer climbs at an alarming rate for this big

vehicle. With its engine pulling decently in the low RPMs, it still hits the prime notes around 3,000 RPMs, where you can make the exhaust really growl. Guests also noted the interior quality – which for any ultra-luxe SUV is a huge stress point. Leather and stitching materials are top-notch, the seats are remarkably comfortable. Robert Marchhart,

HE HOLIDAY SEASON IS UPON US AND DESPITE SOME ABNORMALITIES AS A RESULT OF THIS PESKY AND ANNOYINGLY PERSISTENT PANDEMIC, THERE WILL BE STEADFAST AND RELIABLE FACETS OF OUR CELEBRATIONS THAT WILL HOPEFULLY EVOKE COMFORTING FEELINGS OF SECURITY, HOPE AND SPONTANEOUS GAIETY. page 180
There will be gifts, Santa Claus, trees and carols, but most importantly there will be family and friends. There also will be turkey and wine. Since I never cooked a turkey and am not the biggest fan of its meat, I cannot help you in that department. But I do know a little bit about wine, and I can assist you in selecting a bottle of vino to pair with your bird no matter the preparation. So here they are. DOMAINE DU VIEUX LAZARET CHÂTEAUNEUF-DU PAPE-ROUGE 2018 A classic blend of Grenache, Mourvèdre and Syrah with a touch of Cinsault. Châteauneuf-du Pape is the first regulated appellation from France established in 1923, producing both red and white wines. Châteauneuf-du Pape trans-
lates as the “Pope’s New Castle.” In the early 14th century, when newly elected Pope Clement V, who happened to be French, moved the capitol of Papacy to Avignon, France, thereby starting a line of Avignon Popes – all fervent wine enthusiasts and each of whom significantly contributed to the wine culture of the region. Domaine du Vieux Lazaret is owned by the Quiot family, and it dates back to 18th century when the Lazarist monks ran a hospice in the village of Châteauneuf-du Pape. At 250 acres, it is one of the largest properties in this wine region. The wine offers a balanced structure with a potential for aging. It gives out a generous

nose of white pepper, lavender, Kirsch and black plum. It is silken on the palate with firm, supple tannins, and a long finish of dried herbs with hints of walnuts. To unlock the wine’s aromatics, decanting is recommended a few hours prior to intended consumption. The wine offers a great versatility in food pairing: game dishes, meat pastas, cheeses and turkey. FRANO MILOS STAGNUM ROSÉ From the end of the Second World War until its declared independence in 1991, Croatia was once a part of the former nation of Yugoslavia and a solid part of the Communist Block. As is the case with all of Balkans, wine making traditions are centuries old here. And also like many countries in the region liberated from Soviet domination, including the likes of Hungary, Slovenia, Romania, Croatia has recently been experiencing a sort-of wine resurrection. Some fantastic wines made
from both local and international grapes are being made here and gaining global recognition. It was here after all, where one of the California’s beloved grapes, Zinfandel, originated under the name of Crljenak Kaštelanski. Recently, I tasted a compelling rosé from Croatia’s Pelješac Peninsula in Southern Dalmatia. Frano Milos is a renowned wine maker at Stagnum winery, whose specialization is the indigenous red grape Plavac Mali. Grown on steep, coastal vineyards with sandy soils over dolomite rocks, the grape offers unique characteristics, and the Stagnum Rosé from it, is like no other. An intense, blood orange color comes from an extended skin maceration, and so does a slight sensation of astringency on the palate. The fruit flavors of cranberry, rhubarb and cherry intermingle with savory notes of sun-drenched herbs, a brisk salinity, and a touch of flinty smokiness. This is a serious rosé with a long, persistent finish and a rich mouthfeel that benefits from decanting. Beyond pairing with turkey, this wine’s intensity can stand up to cured meats, strongly flavored cheeses, and even roasted lamb.
BERTANI VALPOLICELLA RIPASSO In the Northeastern part of Italy, there is a picturesque region of Veneto, towered over by the mighty Dolomite Alps and blessed with the azure waters of Lake Garda. Aside from the scenery and the city of Venice, the region is also a wine destination. Among many others, the appellation (DOC) of Valpolicella is one of the most recognized styles of wine made here, and Bertani is one of the staple wine families with a long history and well-established legacy. Their 2017 Valpolicella Ripasso was one of the wines at a dinner I attended recently. Made predominantly from a local grape variety Corvina Veronese, with a small amount of Merlot (10 percent) and five percent of another local red, Rondinella. The grapes are grown in the hills of the Valpantena and Valpolicella Classica areas where the soil is mainly calcareous marl with an addition of volcanic deposits, rich in iron. The term “ripasso” refers to a special

wine making technique. After the completion of the first, regular fermentation, the wine is mixed with pomace separated from the Amarone and fermented for the second time. The method adds an additional strength and intensity to the resulting Valpolicella Ripasso.
sandy morainal deposits covered by a limestone bedrock. Chardonnay grape dominates here with about 85 percent of the plantings. Pinot Nero comes second with 10 percent, followed by Pinot Blanco. It is the Pinot Nero (Pinot Noir) which adds rosé color to Franciacorta.
On the nose, the wine exhibits a clean and intense aroma of ripe, red fruit with hints of dark fruit, such as bramble, blackcurrant and ripe cherry. The texture is velvety with a well-balanced and round mouthfeel. It maintains a lively and intense grip all the way through and finishes with intriguing notes of tobacco, roasted chestnuts and cedar. This Valpolicella seamlessly matches with different Italian dishes: flavorsome pasta and rice dishes, such as risotto with porcini mushrooms, grilled and roast meats, medium-matured cheeses and of course … roasted turkey.
Contadi Castaldi is one the most reputable Franciacorta wineries. Its Brut Rosé is made from 65 percent Chardonnay and 35 percent Pinot Noir. The wine comes in a sexy, eye-catching package making it a great gift. In the glass, it shows off a beautiful coral pink hue. It offers elegant and fine perlage, which tickles the nostrils, intensifying the aromas of raspberries, rose petal with hints of baked apple, and tropical fruits. It is crisp and tangy on the palate with a long, sensual finish, a great wine for any occasion. It serves well as an aperitif, continues superbly throughout any event, calms you down before bedtime, and pairs well with… yes, turkey.
It would not be a celebration without some sparkle in a liquid form. Champagne is always a sure, even if a predictable, pick. That is why I decided to take a different route: a twist on the predictable at a comparable price point. Franciacorta DOCG is a classic method sparkling wine produced in the eponymous area of Franciacorta, in the province of Brescia, in Lombardy, Italy. The vineyards of the appellation extend over 5,400 hectares with mineral-rich soils, granular-sized, calcareous gravel, and page 182
BEAUJOLAIS A sommelier’s tried and true go-to wine for the holidays, and specifically for pairing with turkey, is the red grape Gamay. When it comes to Gamay the best ones arguably come from the French appellation of Beaujolais.
Part of the larger Burgundy wine region, Beaujolais produces wines of three colors: red, white, and rosé. Ninety percent of Beaujolais wines are red. Gamay is a thin-skin variety that produces fruit-forward wines of fresh, bright aromas of cherry, plum, bramble, cinnamon, rose petals and a touch of pepper. They are fairly low in tannins and have a short life expectancy; a red Beaujolais should be consumed within five to six years. The best Beaujolais wines are said to come from 10 Cru villages and offer a great quality for your buck; one should not pay more than $25 USD for even a top-quality bottle. I tasted a 2017 Chateau de Chaize from a Cru village of Brouilly, which is considered a high caliber, and its average price comes at $22 USD. The wine exhibited all the classic flavoring with a surprising depth and complexity. They are great cheese and charcuterie wines. I drank mine with beef brisket and it paired beautifully. There you have it. All these wines are easily available through general distribution, at attainable price points, and a fantastic quality-to-value ratio. want to share the stories of a few exemplary people with inspirational lives, and their ideas on how you too can benefit from a life of service. LEADERSHIP IN ACTION Robert J. Padberg is the founder of the Bureau de Nutrition et du Développement (BND), an organization that provides daily snacks and hot meals at school canteens to hundreds of thousands of children in the most impoverished parts of Haiti. His daughter, Miriam Padberg-Owens, co-owns a high-end restaurant with her mother in the capital city of Haiti that has directly and indirectly employed up to one hundred local men and women in food preparation and service. Both the school canteen program and the restaurant provide long-lasting careers to individuals so local families can thrive, which, in turn, helps communities to build important social equities much-needed in Haiti right now: economic viability and stability. When Padberg started his organization almost
40 years ago, he provided a daily hot lunch to 26,000 children. Today, BND continues to provide daily morning snacks and hot lunches to over 400,000 children in schools throughout Haiti. “When the Roman Catholic missionaries in Haiti first approached me to take over their charitable food program in the 1980s, I actually had zero interest in doing this type of humanitarian work. But when we went into the innermost parts of rural Haiti, I could see they needed help,” said Padberg about the early days of BND. “I suppose after that, there was no denying that it was an important thing to do, and the rest is history. I decided to dedicate my entire life to this work and even now, at an age past retirement, I still try to discover new ways to launch programs that could be of help. Creating BND has given me a really meaningful life in Haiti.” Supporting local economies and communities is the backbone of BND’s DNA. “The women who manufacture the ingredients for the snacks are like a

it gives them confidence to do so. These jobs are a vital source of income for communities where stable jobs can be scarce for women,” said PadbergOwens of both BND and her restaurant, Brasserie Quartier Latin. A highlight of being on the for-profit side of things is that Padberg-Owens is involved in fundraising for charitable events. In addition to providing meals to families in temporary shelters adjacent to the restaurant after the 2010 earthquake, as well as helping to organize summer camps (a nearly non-existent concept in Haiti until recently), she throws an annual holiday party for disabled children complete with a visit from Santa and his elves where they

tures in more than 120 countries on six continents, instinctively identifying the universal human dignity in all of us. Her photographs connect audiences with significant social causes such as gender-based violence and the plight of refugees and migrants. She is also the founder of Exposing Hope, a nonprofit that raises funds for women and children who are victims of human rights abuses; her photos help fund the charity. I asked Everett how we can see these disenfranchised groups through her lens of compassion and take action. “Nobody wants to leave their country they do it because they need to or they won’t survive, and often life is difficult on both sides. There is a common thread in humanity, and this is also present in refugees and migrants: they page 188
want all the same thing, the good life,” said Everett. “Globalization means that they get to see the distorted lifestyle that social media paints: money, clothes, cars, glamour and they have the same intrinsic desires to acquire those things, just like those of us in the developed parts of the world. They want to forget their own reality.” HELPING THESE COMMUNITIES “Supporting small businesses run by immigrants is the best way to help new communities thrive. Talk to them and really connect - find out who they are and what they used to do in their previous lives. Giving new arrivals opportunities to work helps dispel the myth that they are only there to take away jobs and benefits,” said Everett.
In fact, most people will find that immigrants are willing to take on the jobs that locals won’t. Right now, the world is facing an acute labor shortage, so if there is an influx of people looking for jobs, it is a win-win situation for everyone. When it comes to donating, Everett said it isn’t always easy to give money, but every little bit helps. “Sometimes people are too embarrassed to donate only $5 because they think it won’t go far but it does - it matters a lot to the receiver.” Both Everett and the Padberg family represent the best of what resides within each of us. And while you may get the work done, you may end up sacrificing personal or family time in the process. Without realizing it, you may be overworking yourself. Overworking yourself can lead to more mistakes being made, poorer sleep quality, more stress, lowered energy and less social interaction. So yes, the work may be completed, but at what cost? As a leader, it may be difficult to relinquish duties to others. However, establishing a shared leadership environment where individuals can work freely can not only build trust within the team and increase overall productivity, but can also increase your own well-being.
SHARED LEADERSHIP Shared leadership is defined as a process of collective dynamic influence among individual group members who lead each other to attain the group’s objectives. Teams that hold a shared leadership philosophy show an increase in ownership amongst group members,
which leads to increased problem-solving abilities, which in turn enables the group to reach their full potential. A key aspect of a shared leadership environment is trust. If you do not communicate your trust in others, then the working environment will be less than optimal. Research shows that establishing trust decreases the chances of misinterpreting one’s behaviors. For example, if an individual you do not trust questions your idea, you may view that individual as being “out to get you.” However, if you trust that individual, then you are more likely to view that individual as being supportive or trying to help. There are two main components of shared leadership: supportive environment and task complexity. A supportive environment relates to empowering those within the group to make their own decisions and to have input on organizational tasks. Providing your subordinates these opportunities can

increase one’s confidence in their decision-making abilities and will also be more likely that they will provide their perspective during team meetings. Task complexity relates to the relationship between what is required of a task and the overall outcome. Research shows that the more complex the task is, the more shared leadership is required. When a task has multiple parts, it can be more effective to distribute the tasks amongst the team because the probability of completion increases. It also has the added benefit of increased effectiveness because you are able to direct your attention and efforts to a slice of the pie, as opposed to the whole thing. While it is important to empower your subordinates to make their own decisions and lead their “sub teams”, it is also important to recognize that you are still the leader of the organization. Just because you implement a shared leadership environment, does not mean you give up your responsibilities as a leader. You still have a job to do, but giving your subordinates more autonomy in their work can have a long-lasting impact.
UTILIZING THOSE AROUND YOU My first year coaching high school basketball, I experienced the benefits of a shared leadership environment. Having been the assistant coach for six previous seasons, I did not realize all that goes into being a head coach: making practice plans, overall game script and the organizational demands. At the start of the season, I tried to do everything myself and it was extremely overwhelming. Even though I felt I was doing everything I could for my team, there was always something that I would forget or that I did not have an answer to. I had assistants and parents asking me what I needed, but I simply brushed it off. It was not until I started utilizing these resources around me, giving them the opportunities to take some of those tasks off my plate that operations became more efficient.
My assistant coach had more head coaching experience than I did, so I left him in charge of substitutions during games and I gave him a portion of practice so that I could spend energy elsewhere. In terms of parent meetings, team dinners and other administrative tasks, I left that to one of the parents. All I asked in return was that she kept me in the loop, which she did. This took even more off my plate to where I could now spend more time watching film and getting prepared for the next game or practice. I even utilized the freshman coach for parts of practice as well. He possessed some basketball skills superior to mine, so when he asked to help, I felt like this was an opportunity for him to lead my players so that I could focus on observation. In summary, my first year of coaching could have been a disaster without implementing a shared leadership environment. While our overall record was not great, how we functioned as a team and how we functioned as an organization was more streamlined and therefore more effective because tasks were distributed among multiple individuals. This in essence allowed me to direct my energy where it needed to be, but also allowed me to lead through observation as opposed to doing all the tasks on my own.
HOW TO IMPLEMENT A SHARED LEADERSHIP ENVIRONMENT The first step in establishing a shared leadership environment is to identify how the strengths of your subordinates fit into the overall team goals. You first must identify what your team goals are, but once that process happens, understanding the strength of those around you can help guide you in allocating specific tasks. If you know that an individual is excellent at crunching numbers, then they might be someone you allocate financial tasks to. The next step involves communication. First, let everybody know who is in charge of what and what your expec-
tations are of that individual. Second, create that open-door policy. Inform everyone that they have the freedom to make their own decisions, but to keep you updated. Also, set the expectation up front that their input is strongly encouraged. While you will end up making the final decision, creating a safe place where others feel comfortable to provide their perspective can give you all the information you need to make an informed decision. Lastly, let those around you know that you trust them. When people know that their leaders trust them, they become more confident in their decision-making, are more motivated, and are more likely to enjoy their work. Finally, what may help in divvying up the tasks is to first schedule time for yourself. Allocate time throughout your week for personal care or family time. Most try to fit in personal time after the fact, and if you have a busy schedule, we often sacrifice our own well-being. Therefore, doing this on the front end will now force you to relinquish tasks to other people. Taking care of yourself and spending time with your family is important if you want to have an effective work-life balance. You will see that not only will you be more effective, but your team will be more effective and motivated as well.
FINAL THOUGHTS I understand that it may not be easy to relinquish tasks to other people. I also understand that you may not feel you have too much on your plate and you are just “doing your job”. However, if you are working non-stop, it is more difficult to see the residual impact overworking has on your personal well-being, your home life, and on your subordinates. Just because you relinquish tasks to other people, does not mean that you are not doing your job nor that you have lost your authority over the final product. Trust those around you, trust your ability to lead, and watch your team and your personal life thrive. page 193

HOW MANY TIMES HAVE YOU FOLLOWED DIETS, CONSUMED SUPPLEMENTS AND HERBS WITHOUT CONSULTING A DOCTOR OR REGISTERED CLINICAL DIETITIAN? HOW MANY TIMES HAVE YOU PAUSED, TAKEN A STEP BACK, AND RATIONALIZED THE FITNESS TIP YOU HAVE BEEN ASKED TO FOLLOW? page 196
If these questions make you ponder, do not worry, you are not alone. Most of us these days do not think twice before accepting fitness and nutrition tips and implementing them just because it is a viral trend or because a super-fit person is selling us the idea. We follow what’s being circulated online, we constantly read about it and most of the time we start adapting it, just because we think if it worked for others, it would work for us as well. The problem here is that fitness and nutrition should not be taken casually.
Misinformation around fitness can lead to serious injuries. Many of us are deeply worried about what we put into our bodies, but that caution fails us when it comes to workouts, supplements, and diet fads. “Natural” supplements and diets we follow might not be that healthy. This is the reason why we should be more careful and change our attitude toward accepting fitness tips without thoroughly analyzing them. That said, here are the top five bogus fitness-related advice popular among
the masses.
CARDIO IS BAD FOR YOU. This one is my favorite, as there is such a broad generalization here. Nobody describes what do they mean when they say, cardio is bad for you. Cardio was the backbone of civilization for thousands of years during our evolutionary process before machines started doing most of our work – and now, suddenly cardio is bad for us? In reality, cardio is one of the best forms of exercise. Have you watched how many of our competitive sports are cardio-intensive: tennis, swimming, soccer, basketball and the recent fitness favorite Crossfit. Cardio is essential, and one must include healthy level of cardio exercise in their workout plan. Yes, there is a relation between building muscles and limiting cardiovascular exercise, but that does not mean cardio is bad and if your goal is to build muscles then you should completely refrain from doing any cardiovascular exercise. Regardless of your fitness goal, whether it is to shed weight, lose fat, or build

muscles, do not think that cardio is bad for you ever. It is total junk advice.
LIFT HEAVY TO GAIN QUICK MUSCLES. We all have thought about this, and even fallen for this crappy advice, at some point during our fitness journey. For men, our egos can be very fragile, and we want to lift the heaviest weights in the gym to impress everyone and make us look the strongest and fittest, hence we easily succumb to such egoistic tips. But trust me, if you do not train your body slowly and steadily enough before lifting those 60 pounds, you are going to crack something in your body and hurt yourself out of the gym for the next three months. This bogus tip circulates a lot among the masses and on social media. While there is some truth of lifting heavy, we forget the concept of progressive overload. One simply can’t jump from lifting 10 kilos to lifting 50 kilos in three days. You need to slowly add weight to your maximum lifting potential so the body can adapt. If you follow this tip without analyzing its consequences, you might end up in an orthopedic doctors’ office sooner than in a bodybuilding competition.
AS LONG IT IS HERBAL OR NATURAL, IT IS GOOD. This bogus tip goes beyond fitness and dives deep into this massive miscommunication campaign created by marketeers from every industry across the spectrum: medicine, supplements, food and cosmetics. We have been told that everything herbal and natural is the
gold standard and can be consumed or applied without any issue. This is not 100 percent true and one must always consult an expert before just accepting this false marketing claim. From herbal pills to food replacements, drinks, and fitness supplements, not everything is good for the body just because it is natural. Always either do your research before consuming things or consult an expert to make sure it is safe.
CARBS AND FATS ARE BAD. PERIOD. How many so-called nutrition experts and social media fitness influencers have sold this idea to us? How many online diets emphasize this totally bogus idea that fats and carbs are bad? Without providing any clinical rationalization on why these are bad, or helping us understand the concept of calories, good fatsbad fats, good carbs-bad carbs, and how these bio-molecules are necessary for us, mass influencers just sell us this fear that carbs and fats are bad, to avoid them at all costs and eat only lean proteins and salads if you want to lose weight or build muscles. We accept it as gospel and cut out every form of carb and fat from our diet, thinking we are doing a big service to the body. In fact, that would be a total disservice to your body. Fats and carbs are two of the four major bio-molecules and very essential for healthy cellular and bio-molecular maintenance, and one should always try to incorporate healthy carbs and fats into their diet to stay healthy, boost immunity and keep molecular malfunctioning at bay.
I CAN DO MORE SPOT EXERCISES TO TONE THE MUSCLES OF THAT SPECIFIC BODY PART. This bogus tip is famous amongst two groups, one whose ultimate goal of going to the gym is to develop six-pack abs as soon as they can, and the second that wants to lose weight, especially belly fat instantly. Both groups are focusing on quick results, and they are not wellversed in how the body regulates itself. They feel once they are in the gym, and just repeating a certain set of exercises (crunches, sit-ups, curls) they are going to target the fats around that area and magically shred the weight from that specific region without putting in extra work on other parts of the body. They do not understand that the body works on the principle of homeostasis and compound overall body workouts are the key to being fit. Doing 500 crunches a day is not going to get them anywhere but doing four sets of four different exercises is going to help solve their problem quicker. There are many such bogus myths and tips around fitness and nutrition circulating online and being preached by a lot of new-age influencers who are in the game just to gain followers and likes. Please don’t fall for the buzz.. Fitness and nutrition should not be taken casually, as casualness can lead to serious injuries, life-threatening side effects, epigenetic changes and inducing more harm than benefit. Always do your research and consult an expert before blindly following what could very well be bogus myths and tips. page 197
