BUILDING POLO ON A PARTY
Less than an hour south of tech-savvy downtown Seattle lies the Seattle Polo & Equestrian Center in the quaint town of Enumclaw, Washington. Known simply as “The Claw” by locals, it is also branded nationwide as “The Gateway to Mount Rainier.” The last town you pass before heading to the majestic Mount Rainier, the highest mountain in the state, it is also home to a budding club determined to grow the sport and centralize polo in the Pacific Northwest Circuit. Exemplifying the modern polo club owner, Cameron Smith worked tirelessly over the past few years, establishing a polo school and launching a polo event dubbed the Seattle Polo Party. “Players in the Northwest are accustomed to just going to a small ranch, playing and then going home,” says Smith, “They don’t ever get the opportunity to play in front of a crowd.” Held annually at the beginning of August, the event has grown steadily in the last two years, reaching almost 1,000 spectators this year. page 22
A fashion show, ladies hat parade, VIP tent with lounge and catered buffet lunch, plus vendors, lawn games and a beer and wine garden—it’s no wonder the event has rapidly gained momentum.

The Polo Party also serves as a means to garner the attention of new talent.
Mt. Rainier serves as the backdrop to the Seattle Polo Club, an exhibition polo match during the afternoon, and Enthused guests take the perfect selfie modeling their hats. “Building a club and sustaining it with existing polo players doesn’t seem very feasible to me, unless you’re in an area rich with polo players,” asserts Smith.
“I have to generate revenue to support the club (through) events or bringing people into the sport through the polo school.” page 24

Seattle Polo Club’s season runs from June through September and in stark contrast to Washington’s winters, the summer climate is nothing short of extraordinary. “In comparison to some other places, we get on average 85-degree days. We have zero humidity, we don’t have bugs, we don’t have
mosquitos, it’s a nice place to be in the summertime,” Smith says. And while locals are the target pool of potential members, Smith strives to develop Seattle Polo as a premier summer destination. Seasonal members already hail from California, Texas and Canada who take advantage full advantage of
turn-key polo accommodations. “If you’re a minus one or a zero and you want to get better, then this is a great environment. You can come, we have pros that are coaching type pros that are here because they want to promote polo and they want to teach people. Play good polo, get better and have fun—that’s the environment that I’m trying to build.” page 25

While many consider New York Fashion Week to be a platform for newly graduated designers, we can’t ignore the collections of Tom Ford, Marc Jacobs, Raf Simon’s designs for Calvin Klein – or any of the other big names that continue to rock this city’s show. This year, as the world is enthralled in the battle for diversity and inclusion in fashion, many designers utilized plus-size and transgender models. Fashion houses Proenze Schouler and Rodarte, having moved to Paris, were regrettably missed. One cannot talk about NYFW without mentioning the street style of the industry lovers who transform the streets and sidewalks of the Big Apple into a real catwalk. Fashionistas, bloggers, influencers, stylists and industry insiders deploy their best weapons on the New York City asphalt to unveil what will soon flood the biggest events and catalogs. The latest trends and riskiest styles are sought after by the paparazzi and industry photographers outside of the entrance to each show. Instagram influencers like Olivia Palermo, Chiara Ferragni, Helena Bordon, and Giovanna Battaglia never let us down. Their favorite trends – and now ours – oversize garments, swishing with movement; asymmetric shirts in the style of Monse; belt bags that we can’t get enough of; wearing multiple small Valentino handbags; sock boots first designed by Balenciaga – the trendiest accessory by far; kitten heels; and giant jeweled sunglasses in tomato red, olive green and silver.

Calvin Klein’s Spring 2018 collection draws inspiration from the Hollywood dream factory in his portrayals of the American nightmare contrasted with the American dream, complete with heroines of thrillers, heroes and antiheroes. The aesthetic codes of movie stars are unlimitedly mixed, giving their meanings a new interpretation and celebration. In an unique collaboration with the Andy Warhol Foundation for Visual Arts, this collection incorporated a selection of Warhol artwork as placement screen prints. The pieces feature portraits of Warhol, art collector Sandra Brant and film star Dennis Hopper.

Marc Jacobs remains the king of controversy. Like last season, when he shook the fashion world with his dreadlocked models, this season had the commentators talking. His mystifying show featured no music. In silence, the designer went deep into the afro culture to bring the headwrap style with colorful silk turbans from all over the world created by Stephen Jones. This isn’t their first collaboration with headwraps – Jacobs and Jones styled Kate Moss with a gold turban at the 2009 Met Gala. Jacobs redefined sportswear, craftsmanship and flat slide sandals by adding stones and presenting them with glamour, class and elegance on the catwalk. The double style bags were a powerful touch. His use of sequins in the collection didn’t disappoint. page 32

A few months ago, Bibhu Mohapatra filed for bankruptcy. This season, the designer stood stronger than ever with a collection that reflected Asian culture – particularly that of Japan. Most all the fabrics were sourced in India and Japan. He presented the strapless wrap kimono dress in different ways– off-the-shoulder or with a light piece on the top.

When someone says Tom Ford, it’s like saying elegance and perfection. This season, he brought a super-chic men’s style to women’s, creating some fabulous blazers in brillian colors. A breathtaking white backless jumpsuit stole the show, triggering memories of the famous black dress worn by French actress Mireille Darc in “Le Grand Blond avec une Chaussure Noire,” - a timeless masterpiece of Guy Laroche in the 70s.

CHRISTIAN Faithful to his style, Christian Siriano presented a very diverse collection in every sense of the word. With a cast including transgender, plus-size and racially mixed models, in addition to the remarkable presence of his great friend, famous American comedian, Leslie Jones, Siriano left his own colorful mark on this collection which was punctuated by bold colors giving a playful nod to the 70s energy and interesting textures. Coco Rocha opened the show. This designed exhibited his creative genius by adding swollen sleeves, showing suits with capri pants, jumpsuits, ball gowns in metallic colors, and evening dresses with flower shapes. All tastes were served in a single collection. We’re dying to see some of his extraordinary dresses on the red carpet. Oksana Vig is a celebrity fashion stylist. She freelances as a fashion journalist and editor, is a fashion designer, creative director, blogger, influencer, beauty pagent coach and activist for LGBTQ+ rights.

MENSWEAR SHOWS LONDON, MILAN BOTTEGA AND PARIS by Christelle Pierrette Pierre
There is no better way to please the eyes than the stylish “Men’s Fashion Week”. Throughout the world, and particularly the four major cities of fashion, men gather to pay a well-deserved tribute to “Monseigneur Mode”. New York, London, Milan, and Paris religiously dedicate themselves to the male ritual. Coming from different parts of the world, critics and influencers gather in the spotlight to admire the new men’s collections. They are old, young, beautiful, elegant, stylish! The signal was given in New York City and Calvin Klein responded with confidence. He keeps the spirit of turmoil with a more-than perfect mix: Western trends highlighted by cowboy boots in bright metallic colors, patchwork shirts with satin color blocks, patterns and fringes in the middle of discussion on the bridge – it means simply “do not disturb” – and plastic topcoats. Frankly, we find the collaboration with Raf Simmons has rejuvenated Calvin Klein. We congratulate him. Rochambeau doesn’t go unnoticed with his sporty pieces in neutral tones in simple, refined cuts that reflect the art and love of fashion from duo designers and label founders Laurence Chandler and Joshua Cooper. The Public School of New York managed to keep the bar high, but we know that we can get higher level. Other designers such as Steve Boi, Feng Chen Wang, David Hart, Kenneth Ning, Loris Duran, Carlos Campos, and Nick Graham graced the New York gallery with their ingenious designs on men’s fashion. page 40

Burberry opened London Fashion Week in great pomp the under the strict touch of Christopher Bailey, with leading figures such as Naomi Campbell, Iris Law, Kevin Bueno, Jodu Harsh, Jean and Olympia Campbell, Cara Delevingne and Kate Moss. A variety of accessories such as baseball hats, scarves, oversized mono-boucles, Harrington Jackets, pastel shades plastic topcoats, and embroidered tulle dresses make this collection! Craig Green, a talented British designer, made people, fashion critics, influencers and fashionistas smile with his creations. He likes volume, details, colors that sing in unison, and the unisex in uniformity. Martine Rose emphasized a vintage theme to make the ordinary spectacular with gray satin, khaki shorts, elephant paws, and cargo pockets. London Fashion Week is valued, and it is mainly because the designers work hard to show their talents for a demanding public, which possesses the chic and is distinguished by eccentricity, style, coldness and its charm. This season again, elegance was everywhere from the collections of Wales Bonner, KTZ, Studio M Miller, CK London, Barbour International, Charles Jeffrey LOVERBOY and Studio Raeburn, making it a springboard for Men’s Fashion Week. The adventure continued at Milan Fashion Week. Italian designers, celebrities, fashion critics, fashionistas and influencers attended the fashion events of the greatest creators who only had three days this season instead of four to offer 32 shows at the Milano Moda Uomo. Versace, Prada, D&G, and Fendi launched the great events with legendary clutches in colors and stripes from blue, green, khaki, and yellow for a lively, stylish, luxurious masculine style without forgetting the accessories. Ermenegildo Zegna presented its collection under the tutelage of Alessandro Sartori at La Statale University, decorated with mirrors and transformed into an orange ochre desert, a page 42

Madeline Weeks of GQ USA voiced his opinion on the Christian Dior fashion show, emphasizing colors, modernity and chicness touch. Julien David bet on the basics like t-shirt, pants and denim. Balenciaga made a sensation with his plays. Kenzo and Balmain presented mixed shows like Pigalle, Sacai, Avoc, Cerruti 881, Y / Project, Agnes B, House of Valentino, Facetasm, Rick Owens, Depressed Rich Children, Dries Van Noten, Berluti, Lanvin, Boys, 24/4 Men, Julius, Hermès, Alexander McQueen, Yohji Yamamoto, Junya Wanatabe, and Louis Vuitton. PLAYER PROFILE CAMERON SMITH Captain Seattle Polo Team
To grow and centralize polo in the Pacific Northwest, team captain Smith actually bought and learned to operate the grading equipment to carve out Seattle Polo and Equestrian Club in Enumclaw, Washington. Smith, who plays the winter season in Palm Springs, also organized and hosted the inaugural Seattle Polo Party in 2015, growin the event 100 percent in attendance in three years’ time. He will soon be seen rolling around town in a Rolls Royce, compliments of a deal he struck with the luxury motor company to cross-promote the two brands in the Northwest: polo and Rolls.

Macek decided early on to turn his hobby into a career. Working so closely with different cultures and people - while searching for models - had an impact on his life and his style; he shifted his focus toward the natural world.
Macek is known for his unique ability to capture the beauty of his animal subjects along with their emotions and the essence of their nature. The artistic view expressed in his work is recognized worldwide in important art exhibitions, private showings, and publications. He has published his work in Germany, Belgium, Spain, Brazil, the United Arab Emirates, and the United States. In 2009, he photographed safaris in Africa, particularly in Tanzania and Kenya. Today Macek is at home around the world. More and more he dedicates himself to his own projects, such as his coffee table book Equine Beauty. INCREASED CORE STRENGTH AND STABILIZATION FOR OPTIMAL PERFORMANCE AND BACK HEALTH

We have all heard one of the following about the core… ♦ The core is the center of all movements ♦ My sport requires high amounts of core training ♦ The core is essential for optimal performance …if you’ve been trained, were/are an athlete, or are currently training. Having strength and stability within the core allows athletes across all spectrums to increase performance while decreasing injuries. For sports requiring high levels of stabilization and rotation, like polo, having a strong core can save your back as well. Polo requires high-level players to have very high amounts of stabilization and core strength in order to perform coordinated movements with control and power. When an athlete lacks the optimal strength levels to perform a skill, other muscles of the body must kick in. When the core can’t handle the load or stress, it will habitually page 74
recruit muscle activation from the lower back. Although the back should be strong enough to handle the stresses, it can lead to overuse injuries of the fibrous tissues along the spine – leading to pain, discomfort and a shortened career. Getting ahead of the overuse and impact injuries becomes important, if not more important, than training to enhance performance. My philosophy is to habituate our athlete’s bodies to move optimally through large ranges of motion with proper muscle activation and enhanced strength and power. Specific to core strength and stability for polo, we focus on three key points:
Focus on and increase Range of Motion (ROM) ROM limitations within the hip joint are a major precursor for lower back pain (LBP), lack of gluteal musculature development, and altered lumbar spine kinematics1. Normally, the first train of thought is to simply prescribe a comprehensive stretching routine. However, there are multiple forms of stretching, as well as active, dynamic and static flexibility. Dynamic flexibility is generally placed in the athletic category because it is more related to movement/ exercise. Static flexibility – more commonly known as stretching – is more closely related to yoga and recovery. Individuals who engage in a

as squats and deadlifts until the athlete demonstrates the ability to maintain lordosis with no hip shifting during the movements. All movements should start with a controlled tempo that places increased time under tension during the eccentric muscular action.
Work specifically on flexibility on the legs and hips
comprehensive training program with a goal of increasing hip joint ROM, as well as overall flexibility, must incorporate both dynamic and static forms of flexibility, core stabilization and eccentric resistance training2,4. Arguably, the number one total body exercise for dynamic mobility is overhead squats. Whether performed with weight, an empty barbell or a PVC pipe, all polo players – and all athletes for that matter – should be able to perform this movement well.
Increase core stabilization Core stabilization training should focus on multi-joint complex exercises (i.e. squats, deadlifts, etc.). These movements require multiple joints to work together while placing heavy focus on the core to stabilize the torso. Individuals
with insufficient core strength are often leading candidates to suffer from lower back pain (LBP), which leads to altered lumbar spine kinematics. Altered lumbar spine kinematics results in poor movement mechanics during complex movements like full ROM squats and restricts results from any resistance training program. LBP athletes, fitness enthusiasts, and laypersons typically round their spine at the end of hip rotation during prone hip rotational activities (full ROM squats, lunges, etc.). Core stabilization, strength increases, local muscular endurance, motor control and spine/hip positioning during squat movements should be the focus of any musculature correction program. When an athlete suffers from LBP, our suggestion is to take precaution with big movements such
Less elastic lower limb musculature results in altered kinematics within the hip and spine. For polo players, this means during riding or in the gym, their movements will be off due to hip deficiencies. Athletes who are unable to perform ROM squats end up performing parallel squats. Parallel squats lead to more knee pain and less performance than full ROM squats. This problem arises when individuals are unable to maintain posture and technique during complex multi-joint movements, such as squats. Performance coaches should remove their athletes from movements that require full ROM until they can correct their musculature imbalances and weaknesses. Through comprehensive musculature correction, such as self-myofascial release therapy, S&C coaches can save their athletes and clients from LBP and further injury. Once corrected, S&C coaches should re-incorporate full ROM movements back into the program. Recent research looks into the fascia tissue and how it affects adjacent musculotendinous structures2. A link between myofascial tissue connections page 75
and the coordinated transmission of force into those adjacent musculotendinous structures are found. These findings have resulted in an increasing popularity in the practice of foam rolling. A prescription of foam rolling, followed by static stretching, on soft tissue should follow every workout. We have found that Functional Muscle Fitness athletes who stay consistent with the three aforementioned techniques increase hip ROM and reduce LBP significantly, often within the first two weeks. All performance coaches must direct and guide their athletes to be proactive in performance, recovery and health by ways of training, nutrition and health. Sources: 1.
