Hakuba Happo-one ski resort is taking a huge step forward with a new snow park at the Nakiyama base area. The new park in front of the Happo-one ski school will focus entirely on kids and beginners. The snow park will feature an 80-meter moving walkway clad inside a dome to keep the little ones dry on those snowy days. Not to be outdone, Jigatake Snow Resort with new management have been busy this summer creating the largest beginners snow park in Japan. Hakuba Land Station opened in 2020 to great reviews. The impressive building with its distinctive wooden framework designed by renowned architects Kenga Kuma & Associates features a Snow Peak outdoor brand store, a Starbucks coffee shop, a restaurant and a tourist-friendly information center. 「Snow Peak LAND STATION HAKUBA（スノーピークランドステーション白馬）」は2020年7月にグランドオープン。北アルプスの峰をイメージした屋根と、木の枝と雪の結晶をモチーフとした独特の木組みが象徴的な施設は、世界的建築家、隈研吾氏が手掛けている。施設内には、スノーピーク直営店、白馬村観光局のインフォメーションセンターやスターバックスなどが入っている。

Mark your calendars! March 4th & 5th is the 75th Anniversary of the Riesen Slalom Ski Race on Happo-one. Even though riesen slalom is the German word for giant slalom, the race is more like a downhill course with skiers ﬂying down the Riesen course on Happo-one. The ﬁnish is at the Nakiyama base area. The race is open to all challengers. This winter Tsugaike Kogen will be celebrating their 60th Anniversary. The lifts were installed in 1960, previous to that “yama-ski” enthusiasts turned up in spring to climb the slopes to earn every turn. Yama-ski is a non-extreme form of ski mountaineering with the focus on touring and enjoying time in the mountains rather than shredding powder. As both an expansive ski resort and the trailhead on a main route up Mt. We all know what it is like on a busy ski day, difficulty finding a parking space, trudging to the lifts, waiting for a table to come available at lunch time….S-Class at Iwatake Snowfield will solve all these problems. As a life-long fan of everything involved in skiing and snowboarding, I find it hard to list unpleasant things about ski vacations. If I had to list two, they would be: lining up for the first lift to get up the mountain and avoiding an accident with a skier or snowboarder on a crowded slope.

here is a way to avoid any crowds in Hakuba that requires never having to leave the slopes even when the lifts close – and you get ﬁrst tracks after sun-up without having to catch a lift on an empty ski slope.

Hakuba Happo-one is home to a mountain hut where you can watch the sun go down, sleep in comfort and be up to enjoy first tracks before most skiers and snowboarders down in the valley even get to eat their breakfast I spent the night at the fore mentioned, Happo-ike Sanso named after the pond about an hour walk from the hut and most popular during the warm summer season. After a great time spent on a bluebird day on Happo-one Ski resort, I rode the final top chairlift, passing the start point of the men’s downhill Olympic race and made my way to the hut, elevation 1839 meters. As I stepped through the door and swapping my ski boots for slippers, I was welcomed with the warm greeting of Japanese hospitality; we have been waiting for you Mr.Chan. After checking into my no-frills room, suffice to say was without the chocolate on the pillow, and being late in the season, I took in the views of the ski resort in front of me and realized that being east facing, I would have to get up early to take in this sunrise. Dinner was scheduled from 6 pm, so I decided to go outside, pop behind the hut and take in the view of the Hakuba San-sen, or the Hakuba Three Peaks as they are commonly

known in English. Rising to just under 3000 meters, Shirouma, Shakushi and Hakuba-Yari’s peaks were glowing in the pink sunset. An avid photographer was setting up his tripod to get the shot. The photographer, Mr. Takeda, comes up the mountain once a week, usually on a clear evening, to not only get a picture of the mountains but he explains to me that a dark cloudless night with low light pollution combined with fresh mountain air, you can get a stellar shot of the star trails..…..I slowly hide my smartphone camera and smile. Dinner is served in the dining room and surprised to find quite a few other guests booked in for the night besides me and Mr. Takeda. There are a couple of senior ladies who love to hike in winter and want to get an early start and a young threesome who are going into the backcountry in the morning and will be shooting a video of one of the party hurtling down an empty slope. The food was buffet style with plenty of options to fill our empty stomachs; I gorged on a “few” pork filets, and combining it with a glass or two of draft beer was very filling. After dinner, I made my way on the decking, the air is crisp, and the temperature is not too unpleasant. Mr. Takeda is looking up at the stars and points to one and says that is Venus as he clicks away on his camera remote. I looked at the tranquil lights below in Hakuba village when I was startled by the sound of an engine and bright lights coming towards me; it was the snow piste basher knocking out the bumps and laying the groomed lines for the next day’s skiers and riders. I had set my alarm clock to wake up just before dawn to view the sunrise, which is quite a quintessential thing to do in Japan; in fact, it has its own word “goraiko” which means getting up in the early morning on a mountain and watching the sunrise, we need such a word in English! The sun rises over the eastern mountain range and spreads a yellow-orange tint on the freshly groomed virgin snow before it hides behind a low cloud. A fantastic goraiko, it was worth getting up for. After another buffet-style breakfast, it was time to put on my skis and sail down the empty slopes; the snow was groomed to perfection and being spring, it was nice and soft like ice cream. I had the slopes all to myself for the first time ever. Bliss! It is possible to spend one night up on the slopes as a special treat or for those who want to get the first tracks in the backcountry or even in the resort. Or maybe you want to be like Mr. Takeda and take that awesome picture.

WHILE SO MUCH HAS CHANGED throughout the world in response to the COVID-19 pandemic, some constants have remained, especially in the Hakuba Valley with its fresh air, majestic mountains and unbeatable outdoor adventures. Here are 19 ‘socially distancing’ activities to enjoy during your time here. Restrictions may apply and some activities will be different from normal.

During winter the iconic symbol is open for visitors, you can take the chairlift from the bottom of the hill up to the top and enjoy the view from the ski jump tower.

We all know how good being in nature can make us feel. We have known it for centuries. The sounds of the forest, the scent of the trees, the sunlight playing through the leaves, the fresh, clean air — these things give us a sense of comfort and ease away our stress. Riding in the trees is about as surreal an experience you can get on snow as you are suddenely transported to a silent serene world. The Hakuba Valley is home to many great places to eat or drink outside while enjoying the mountains. Our favorite is the City Bakery at Mountain Harbor located at the summit of Iwatake Snowﬁeld, don’t worry if it gets too cold, there is also indoor seating.

Skip the crowds during the day and ski at night at Able Hakuba Goryu. The runs are freshly groomed, there are never any lift lines, the food is great in the Escal Plaza base area and the lift tickets are cheap! A leisurely activity where one can really venture oﬀ the beaten paths is snowshoeing. Nothing compares to walking through deep fresh snow in a winter forest with snowshoes on. With fantastic panoramic views of the Hakuba mountains. Sledding on a inﬂated inner tube is becoming a favorite wintertime activity, as no special skills are required, and it appeals to all age groups. The tube hill at Kashimayari Snow Resort is a whopping 500 meters long, the longest in Japan.

Located south of Hakuba the impressive Matsumoto Castle is a must for anyone who wants to take a step back and view ancient Japan. Construction on the ﬁve story castle was started in 1592 and is one of only few castles to survive from that period. A great day oﬀ the slopes. The systems of man-made ski trails are maintained at the Snow Harp Olympic Cross Country Stadium. 1998年長野オリンピックのクロスカントリースキー競技会場として使用されたスノーハープ競技場。一般利用も可能。クロスカントリーとは、いわば雪上マラソン。ジョギングやトレランを楽しんでいる方、特におすすめ。

When you roll oﬀ your last ski run and soak in that hot onsen bath, when the chairlifts and gondolas have come to their quiet halts and sunset leaves behind a magical pink hue. It is time for the Hakuba Valleys armies of workers to climb into their big metal beasts. By morning these “pistegroomers” have pushed and tilled the snow on dozens of ski runs into perfect corduroy stripes. It is not only about the powder in the Hakuba Valley, the thrill of carving a fresh groomed slope is one of the most fantastic feelings on snow. Responsible for this are the resorts highly skilled grooming team. And without them we would all be skiing and boarding on powder and bumps on the beginner and intermediate slopes as big as they are on the expert runs.

While you are sleeping soundly under your duvet you can bet the that they will be out there somewhere very lonely in the darkness performing tasks such as restoring tired pistes, nudg-

It can get very lonely up on the mountains. Even in daylight when the visibility suddenly drops, skiers and boarders can lose their bearings in seconds, but the groomer drivers must know their mountains intimately even at night and in blizzard conditions. This ski area knowledge can take a couple of seasons to acquire. Even then, the unexpected can occur, so the drivers keep in constant contact with their

control center and each other with GPS and of course mobile phones. And just to keep spirits up they also have hi-fi systems and formidable cab heaters. A home from home really! Not that life is a picnic, it is hard work fighting fatigue in poor or no visibility, strong winds and white outs. Driving a groomer or snowcat as they are sometimes called is a delicate art. Riding on the wide, metal-bladed tracks means that progress, even on soft snow, tends to feel nerve-jangling firm – not ideal when the controls are light and amazingly sensitive. Wondering why you ski pass is becoming pricier? Well the groomers aren’t cheap. Each vehicle costs about $500,000. And with such big engines they can consume at the rate of 250 liters of fuel per vehicle per shift.

KANE-NO-NARU OKA SLOPE

Hakuba Connect publishers Steven and Mikyo Williams have built a new chalet in Hakuba. Here they recount their process how they as first time builders managed their project. SW We have some land behind our current home, which we bought when we purchased our current property. An overgrown piece of land next to this became available, so we decided to buy it to make the plot large enough to build on. Unlike square blocks of land, the patterns of land are sometimes very unique; this new land was L shaped. LEFT Clearing the land meant trees had to be felled. The branches were used for woodchips and the logs for ﬁrewood.

MW In Japan, lands are not measured on square meterage but on square tsubo; a tsubo is about 3.3sqm². The Surveyors marked out the blocks with corner makers and pink tape! SW The land hadn’t been used before and the trees had grown quite high. The ﬁrst job was calling in the lumberjacks to fell the trees. As the trees were cut, we poured local Hakuba Nishki sake on the stumps, what seemed like a waste of delicious sake! Nevertheless, we now have plenty of ﬁrewood for winter. MW As we poured the sake, we said a short prayer thanking

SW The next part of the process was making the land ﬂat. We visited all our neighbors, oﬀering them gifts for the disturbance of large trucks that will be intruding on their peace during the days ahead. They all seemed content with their luxurious individually wrapped cookies.

MW Part of Japanese culture is gift-giving. The reason for giving the gift is to apologize in advance for any disturbances you may cause, the chances of which are increased if you are building a new chalet on a quiet road. SW Next was the design and building stages. We sourced a local Japanese master builder who sat down with us, discussed our plans on what we could or could not do. Hakuba has a lot of restrictions that we had to clear for us to design a chalet that would capture the views of the surrounding mountains. MW For me, it was important to use a knowledgeable local contractor who knows what it’s like to live in snow country. I have heard a lot of horrid stories of new builds designed by architects back in the cities who do not understand snow and more importantly, where to put it after it has fallen oﬀ the roof. SW We wanted a chalet where the customer could feel at home with more space; this meant large bedrooms and a large ski room. Another priority was warmth, so we opted for triple glazing windows and underﬂoor heating. MW We have traveled extensively and when you stay in a chalet or condominium, you need a place to put your clothes and not “live” out of a suitcase. All our bedrooms have closets and chest of drawers.

It was fascinating watching them work and the chalet being built right in front of your eyes. It was like watching a real-life time-lapse. SW Our contractor supplied us with dozens of catalogues for ﬂoorings, bathrooms, doors, kitchens and more! It was getting very confusing, so we opted for the easy option and visited a showroom in the city. Here we could order everything from one supplier, which made it so much simpler. MW Going to one supplier made it exceptionally smooth; you get to choose everything in the showroom then the supplier talks directly to your builder. SW Hakuba is an adventure resort, so we wanted our guests to revitalize themselves in a Japanese style jacuzzi bathroom. MW The SPAGE bathroom is luxurious, with air jets, shoulder waterfall and over-head shower giving you an invigorating massage. Actually, I sneak down to relax sometimes when we don’t have guests! SW Another visit to the big city for furniture shopping! MW I usually like shopping but a weekend looking at sofas and beds is hard. SW The big day has arrived with the ﬁre and health inspections to get our chalet license. MW An extremely nervous day for me, but everything went smoothly, and we received our license in a couple of days. SW Thinking of a name was amazingly easy for us, Hokujyo means northern castle. MW Hokujyo is the previous name for the northern part of Hakuba and it’s still used on the address system. It matches our own castle perfectly.

riginally in Japan and in Hakuba, there were no resorts, lifts or groomers. Anyone who wanted to ski had to hike up, negotiate mountain terrain and almost always got treated to fresh turns. Now over 100 years later, the equipment has improved, lift accessed runs have developed but the backcountry mountain terrain remains the same. There are still massive avalanche slide-paths, tight V-shaped valleys with overhead exposure and many terrain traps to mention just a few hazards. We do though now have the technologies and universally practiced methods to study, observe and forecast the conditions where avalanches can occur. Avalanche safety professionals around the world are dedicated to reducing involvements in avalanches and through public information, research and training they promote safe winter backcountry travel. In Japan, with the growing number of recreational backcountry skiers and snowboarders, the same public awareness, avalanche hazard information and training is available. Positively speaking, the shift towards providing useful and appropriate public services for avalanche awareness is still a developing concept here. However, in the past few years the ski resorts in the Hakuba valley have seen the value in providing information and services to the public to aid in safety and fostering awareness. On a national level there isn’t the same available information on avalanche hazard and area forecasting as in North America or Europe, however smaller local organizations like Hakuba’s Avalanche Control Team (ACT) actjapan.org has mountain weather station online information and The Japan Avalanche Network (JAN) www.nadare.jp offer avalanche bulletins for the Hakuba area and other areas in Japan. There are also lots of useful weather websites that offer information like wind, expected snowfall depths and temperatures for below treeline, treeline and alpine. For the average on-piste skier, all this is extraneous information. However, the ease at which one can enter into off-piste terrain that can potentially be deadly avalanche terrain is very relevant. Some terrain between runs or just out of the ski area boundary is a tempting treat, though the unknown consequences of treating yourself to them could be severe to you or others below. You can get into a nasty spot without really realizing. And the old adage of “ignorance is bliss” rings true in the avalanche world too, although your bliss might very well be short lived. With this in mind, the concept of providing proper signage, information and safety services to all guests on the mountain is essential. As the Hakuba ski community grows and becomes more avi-savy and the resorts offer more information to the public, we hope to minimize risk in avalanche terrain while at the same time encouraging safe backcountry touring. akuba Village has made Japan’s most ambitious climate goals: to be net-zero carbon and run on 100% renewable electricity for village operations and for the whole community by 2050. These goals, passed unanimously by the village council with strong community support, are not just aspirational but achievable. The Hakuba local council was responding to a request from the local Hakuba High School students. In the declaration it issued in December 2019, the Hakuba council said climate change is a serious threat to the natural environment of the village, which is blessed with renowned for its powder snow in winter.

The largest ski resort operator in the valley Nippon Ski Development who operate in the resort of Iwatake Snowﬁeld has pledged to use 100% natural energy for low voltage along with 10% renewable energy for all resort operations as well as providing EV parking lots near the lifts. “the snow walls which this year are standing at 19 meters” The Alpine Route that traverses across the Northern Japanese Alps is a spectacular trip that is visited by both international and domestic tourists alike. The route is an assortment of buses, trolleys, cable cars and a ropeway to travel the approximately 90km over and under the Alps, including the 3015m high Mt. Tateyama Peak. First is a 40 minute bus ride from Shinano-Omachi Station located to the south of the Hakuba Valley. This is followed by a trolley bus ride through Kanden Tunnel to Kurobe Dam. The 6km tunnel was built to allow access for the construction of the dam. It is only one lane wide with a short wider intersection to allow buses from each direction to pass each other. The dam itself is usually frozen over during early spring but turns to a spectacular green color in summer with impressive water being discharged. The dam itself is Japan’s tallest at 186meters. It was completed in 1963 to provide power to the Kan-

sai region in a rapidly growing post war Japan. An estimated 10 million workers were involved in the building of the dam with sadly 171 giving up their lives. There is a small monument dedicated to them at the dam. After crossing the dam take the Kurobe Cable Car to Kurobe-daira, then follow this by taking the Tateyama Ropeway with its 360 degree views. As you look outside in spring you may see light snow falling and intrepid backcountry skiers making their way down the mountain. Another trolley bus ride under the mountain brings you to the Alpen Route’s main attraction the unbelievable Yuki-no-otani or Great Snow Valley. The snow walls can be an incredible 20 meters high depending on the time of year and the amount of snow over winter. The walls are created with snowplowers pushing the snow to create the road for tour buses to get up the mountain. The walls are usually in place until late June. The Alpine Route takes approximately 6-7 hours to traverse but allow yourself 8-9 hours if you are making a return trip. There are opportunities to observe a variety of alpine ﬂora, alpine wildlife and access hiking trails to the peak of Mt. Tateyama. If you are making the one way trip then, baggage services are available at Shinano-Omachi station to forward your luggage to your destination in Toyama Prefecture. The route is open from midApril to the end of November with spring being ideal for the snow walls, summer for hiking and fall for the spectacular foliage.

You can try your hand at wearing a kimono and making some soba noodles. You can head over to the Cross Country Stadium and have a go at skiing uphill. You can venture out of town to see cultural sites like Matsumoto Castle or Zenkoji Temple in Nagano City. You could sit and read a book and enjoy the scenery. Or, if youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re a petrolhead and that all sounds a bit tame, you can saddle up on hit the throttle, and go snowmobiling.

The easiest way to join the world of “roopers” is hook up with Lion Adventure and go on one of their snowmobile tours. They have use of the beautiful Hirakawa River that runs in between Hakuba47 ski rea and the accommodation area of Misorano. The river side and even the river is usually covered in deep powder for you to play in. If necessary, Lion will kit you out in full winter weather gear and a helmet. Ski or snowboard clothing is fine, so you can just bring your own. Given that you’ll be stopping for instruction and orientations, maybe dress a little warmer than normal for skiing. Sturdy boots are also advisable, but snowboard boots will do. Don’t forget your gloves. If you have any questions about gear, Lion will be happy to answer them when you book. Each course starts with a guide taking you through the safety features of Lion’s snowmobiles. They are all new and have a top speed of around 60km per hour. The sleds are easy to ride and most beginners master the basics very quickly. The guides will show you how to position your body weight for stability on a slope or over bumpy terrain. Snowmobiles have an automatic gearbox, so there is no clutch and you ride them more like a jetski or a large moped than an actual motorbike. All you have to do is twist the throttle. Most tours start with the guides getting you to do a few figures of eight on a flattish area. The progression then continues onto some relativley smooth area. Once you’re all fit and able, it’s time to hit the powder! Imagine doing that on your first morning skiing. You’d be half buried within seconds! Once off the trails and in powder, the snowmobiles ride like a snowboard or fat skis, all mellow and surfy. Kashimayari is serviced by eight lifts with a respectable vertical of 720m. Kashimayari has two “base” areas depending on which direction you arrive from. If you are arriving from Hakuba then you will arrive at the Lake Nakatsuna base. On the way past the lake make sure you try to catch a look at the ice fishing that happens when the lake freezes over. Sledding on inﬂated inner tubes has been around a long time, but modern lift-serviced snowtubing has only just started to become popular. It is becoming a favorite wintertime activity, as no special skills are required, and it appeals to all age groups. The tube hill is a whopping 500 meters long, the longest in Japan. Visitors can sit back and relax on recliners while sipping cocktails under beach parasols on the slopes, where not long before, Olympic skiers were hurtling down. Hakuba Iwatake Snowfield stands on its own mountain in front of the extended Japan Alps range. Unlike the other Hakuba resorts, the snowfield, literally drops over the back side. The resort has a number of powder pockets that do not see the same traffic as at the big boys nearby. The resort has moved away from grooming all its courses and now leaves several areas to lay down some tracks. Tsugaike’s biggest draw is the expansive beginner area at the bottom where ten lifts service Hakuba’s widest piste. By Kevin Mollard Back in the bubble era of the eighties, golf memberships were worth millions of yen and were counted as assets and traded like shares. The growth in the number of gold courses mirrored the ski industry, and in many ways these two were the main glamor activities that marked the Japanese boom. And with all the money floating around at the time, no expense was spared in developing world class facilities. Nagano alone, with its abundance of natural beauty, has more than 50 courses. And with Nagano being very mountainous, many of the courses are very hilly, with spectacular lofted tees.

Golfing numbers have seen a decline in recent years, and what was once considered a sport for the rich and famous in Japan, is now affordable enough for many.

On arrival at the golf course, check in and you will be given a card in a leather holder, with a number and a key on it. You donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t need your wallet from this point on as everything else can be charged to your locker. Head to the locker room, locate your locker and get changed. Head out to the course managers office and your cart will be waiting for you with your clubs loaded. An attendant will check the number of clubs in your bag and go over any local rules (such as if carts are allowed on the fairways etc).

A round of golf in Japan is also a little different than what you may have used to. In general, your green fees will cover 18 holes, a golf cart, lunch, a locker, and a dip in the hot

chart (pre-programed with players name) on board. They will also warn you of steep slopes, and of blind tees where you cannot see the group in front of you. Some carts are self-drive, while others follow a magnetic course buried under the path cart and the cart cannot vary off the path. On these carts all you need to do is hit the accelerator to start and the break to stop. Many also come with a handheld remote control so you can call up the cart even if no one is on board.

Once you are nice and full you head back to your golf cart and play the back nine holes.

After finishing the front nine you will be back at the course managers area, where an attendant will hand you a card with your tee off time for the back nine. In most cases you have about 45 minutes for lunch. Lunch can either be a set meal from a menu, or on the odd occasion a buffet. Take a little care when ordering off the menu as the basic items are included (generally a curry or rice bowl), but if you are going to go for a Wagyu steak, there will be a surcharge. Drinks are extra and will be charged to your locker. Golf etiquette is quite important in Japan, and almost all players will be wearing brand name golfing attire. Apart from the resort courses in Okinawa, collared shirts are required, and jeans and track pants are frowned upon. Also, when entering the restaurant for lunch, hats, gloves and sunglasses should be removed (there is generally a hanger in the entrance to store these).

So how much is this going to cost you. Well, the cheapest times to visit are weekdays during spring and autumn, where a round including all of the above will set you back about 6,500yen on a standard course, or 9,000yen on a more upscale one. Weekends are generally 3,000 4,000yen more per person. Summer season, from mid-July through the end of August is the peak season, which can also be painfully humid. A round at astandard course in summer will set you back about 10,000yen, while a higher end course can be up to 18,000 â&#x20AC;&#x201C; 20,000yen for a round.

At the end of the round you are back at the course managers office again, where the attendant will count your clubs with you, and take possession of your clubs while you head back to the locker room. To the rear of the locker room with be a Japanese hot spring style bath house, and you are free to get your kit off and bathe au naturel.
