Mother and daughter find their FOREVER

HOME

The Sunshine Coast grandmother is living at Stockland’s Halcyon Nirimba, with her adult daughter Celeste, who is also her full-time carer.

Even though Bisti has only moved 10 minutes up the road from the Little Mountain home she lived in for 22 years, the positive change to her mental health has been tremendous.

It’s only been a couple of months since the mother and daughter unpacked and put together their new furniture, but Bisti says she already loves everything about community living.

In recent years she’s had a few falls and operations and was recovering in a wheelchair for three months; and ultimately maintaining the empty-nested home she’d raised her children in just became too much.

Celeste decided to leave her Brisbane life so she could move back home to the Sunshine Coast and help her mum with daily living.

They picked the Portsea design and live in the spacious open plan home with a walk-in pantry, media room, and office, with Bisti’s Cavoodle Teddy and Suki the cat.

“When I was still in the Little Mountain home, I was feeling lonely and depressed and I couldn’t motivate myself to get out and meet people,” Bisti says.

“Because I was used to being on my own, I didn’t know how I would go with lots of people around me but that’s what I wanted all the time. I wanted company and I wanted friendship and humour.”

“We laughed so much at the last Nirimba happy hour that our cheeks were hurting!

“I thought it was going to take some getting used to, but it’s just been so smooth and easy.”

Recently the pair met another 60 homeowners in their community at a casual street party. “They are the friendliest people,”

Bisti says, “we all seem to have the same mindset! We are calling this our forever home because it feels like paradise.”

The mother and daughter live in Clover Circuit, just a few steps away from the Clubhouse, the heated lap pool, and the gym, and because it’s so close, Celeste says they both exercise every day.

“We put on our joggers and we are at the gym in less than a minute,” Celeste says, “we love swimming in the heated pool after dinner. It’s fabulous because it’s not too deep so Mum can easily reach the floor and get to the side of the pool if she needs a rest.”

Another big plus for the pair is that living in a gated community makes them feel safe.

“We feel like we could probably leave the front door open in this community,” Celeste says.

“This works so well for both of us.”

Bisti says it is a godsend that her daughter chose to move in with her to be her carer.

“There’s such lovely serenity here,” Bisti says.

“Moving here was the best decision I’ve ever made.”

Imagine a gold class style cinema, an enticing resort pool, an exclusive private dining room, a bar that invites the outdoors in and a Creative Arts Pavilion where you can cultivate your creativity – all on your doorstep.
at B by Halcyon A new level of luxury

That’s what’s on offer to homeowners at B by Halcyon (QLD) following the opening of their $17.5 million Recreation Precinct in December last year.

The Recreation Precinct and Creative Arts Pavilion were designed in consultation with BDA Architects, creating both indoor and outdoor spaces that invite connection and engagement among homeowners in the community.

Director of BDA Architects, Adam Beck, says that from the outset, B by Halcyon was envisaged as a landmark project.

“Our collaboration with the Stockland team sought to redefine resort style living for over 50s, with an emphasis on health and wellbeing for the modern senior,” he says.

“As such, we sought new opportunities to weave the indoor/outdoor relationships of the built form to enhance social engagement, even down to the way we designed the shared pedestrian spaces around the facilities.”

“The connectivity of the spaces was also important, following the delivery of the Wellness Centre, the largest private day-spa facility on the Sunshine Coast, which gives health retreats in Byron Bay and the Hinterland a run for their money!”

“Staying true to the spirit of Buderim, the facilities create a true village atmosphere with carefully designed and meaningful spaces that create layers of opportunities for casual or organised social engagement amongst homeowners.”

This is further enhanced by the level of finish throughout the facilities.

“There’s a sense of opulence, sophisticated luxury and timeless elegance in the material choices and details,” Adam says.

The facilities on offer include:

• A large function space with commercial style kitchen

• Private dining room

• Gold class-style cinema

• Pool table and games room

• The Retreat Bar, which opens onto the wide verandah

• Outdoor resort pool

• The Lakehouse BBQ Pavilion

• Floodlit bowling green

• Creative Arts Pavilion with two art studios, a music studio, library, lounge, artists’ courtyard, and café

Creativity thrives in new haven for artists

Various studies show that creativity plays an important role in healthy ageing and assists in maintaining social, cognitive, and emotional wellbeing.

Stockland has taken a holistic approach to healthy ageing, offering homeowners a range of both active lifestyle facilities and spaces where their creativity can be explored.

B by Halcyon’s newly opened Creative Arts Pavilion features arts and craft studios, a pottery workshop with kiln, a music studio, and an open courtyard to hold exhibitions and displays.

Foundation homeowner and ‘artist in residence’, Sue Hadenham, says the Pavilion is a great addition to the growing community.

“The spaces allow for a whole range of artistic endeavours and already there are many interest groups including painting, pottery, sewing, craft and jewellery making, just to name a few.”

“I started seriously painting in the early 1980s. Attending classes in all forms of painting and drawing through TAFE and private tutors. I had a passion to learn painting in pastels, so I found a wonderful teacher in Montville where I studied for a few years and started exhibiting.”

“In 2000, I joined The Margaret Saul School of

Botanical Art at Mount Coot-tha and completed my diploma in Botanical Art, I studied graphite drawing, coloured pencil and watercolour.”

For the next 20 years, depending on work and family commitments, Sue continued to exhibit her work, winning awards and selling many pieces of her artwork.

“Recently, my graphite study of a ‘Rosa Canina with Rosehip’ appeared at The Botanical Art of Illustration held in the Melbourne Botanical Gardens last year. This is a worldwide exhibition where works had to go through a thorough selection process, so this was a massive milestone for me,” Sue says.

At B by Halcyon, Sue is working closely with her good friend and fellow homeowner Jillian Coustley to form various art groups.

“Jill is an amazingly talented artist and teacher; we are very lucky to have such talented people at B by Halcyon. It’s very exciting to work with Jill and support budding artists in our community as they explore their creativity,” Sue says.

“I’m also looking forward to trying different styles of painting and expanding my own skills.”

“As the community continues to grow, we’re hoping to hold more classes and demonstrations as well as host some ‘sip and paint’ nights for fun.”

Welcome to Halcyon

Watch out Victoria, Halcyon Communities is making its mark

Following the success of Halcyon Berwick, Stockland’s first community for over 50s in Victoria, things are ramping up in the southern state.

With three more communities to commence development in 2023, Victoria is fast becoming the hub of Halcyon Communities’ national expansion.

Project Director Lachlan Atkins says it’s exciting for Halcyon Communities to expand in the Victorian market.

“As awareness of land lease communities has increased, more people are seeking the benefits of the lifestyle that an over 50s community offers,” he says.

“We’ve been able to take on the learnings of Halcyon Communities success in south-east Queensland and create a compelling value proposition for the Victorian market.”

“A key differentiator in Victoria is the financial benefits our lifestyle communities offer. Unlike competitors, we offer no Deferred Management Fees, no exit fees and our homeowners keep 100 per cent of the capital gains.”

“With careful consideration of optimal locations in Victoria, we’ve been creative with our masterplanning, not only considering what facilities we’ll deliver within our communities, but also leveraging the amenities from surrounding areas to create truly connected lifestyles for our homeowners,” he says.

Earthworks have recently commenced at two communities, Halcyon Evergreen in Clyde and Halcyon Horizon in Armstrong Creek.

Get set for an exciting 2023

Welcome to the first edition of My Halcyon Days this year – an exciting time for Halcyon Communities.

Having recently relocated to Queensland, I have had the chance to meet with a number of homeowners and I am forever grateful to receive feedback firsthand. I’ve also appreciated the opportunity to see our communities in ‘action’ and the benefits that brings to our homeowners; enjoying their lives through a strong sense of community, activity and just having fun. We now have more than 3,200 people who call Halcyon Communities home, which is a testament to our legacy.

To reflect the changing ways we all live, work and play, Stockland has undertaken a brand refresh. For us, it’s about thinking beyond the traditional bricks and mortar to constantly re-define excellence in liveability. Something that Halcyon Communities truly embodies. So, while our brand may look different, we are still committed to delivering leading customer experiences and creating vibrant communities.

Reflecting on the success of 2022, we continue to be inspired by what is possible. As we move into an exciting time of growth this year, it’s important to pause and reflect on what Halcyon Communities has collectively achieved.

Many development milestones were achieved across our communities at the end of last year, notably the opening of the recreation facilities at B by Halcyon. I had the pleasure of touring the facilities recently and was blown away by the opportunities the spaces will provide for our homeowners.

Halcyon Nirimba was also judged Queensland’s best in Seniors Living at the UDIA Awards for Excellence. This is a significant achievement, one made possible not only by our dedicated team, but also our homeowners who are integral in growing a thriving community lifestyle.

Victoria is in our sights for significant growth as Halcyon Communities continues to expand in our southern state. Halcyon Evergreen and Halcyon Horizon are set to launch soon, which you can read more about in this edition.

We’re excited to continue our growth journey this year. As we move into this next chapter, you will continue to see our new vision emerge for the future of the communities we create by focusing on sustainability, liveability and proximity to open green space and amenities.

With winter around the corner, I hope you all stay warm and enjoy some quality time with family and friends.

Enjoy this issue of My Halcyon Days.

The security of a supportive community when I’m gone

When Matt Booth bought a home in Stockland’s Halcyon Promenade community at Burpengary, he bought security and happiness for his wife, Marion.

He says he hoped the over 50s, masterplanned and gated community would be somewhere his wife would love to live.

The retired hairdresser has recently been diagnosed with lung cancer and said he needed to know his wife wouldn’t be lonely.

“I wanted a place Marion would be surrounded by a community of people her age,” Matt says.

“I’m not going to be around forever so that was my main motivation to buy into Halcyon Communities.”

When their son suggested Halcyon Promenade just down the road from his Burpengary East home, he told them after looking into a number of other communities that it was his number one choice.

“Our son looked at the plans and told us that Halcyon Promenade was miles ahead of the rest,” Matt says.

“We’ll get to enjoy a low maintenance lifestyle in retirement, while still remaining close to

our grandchildren.”

The couple’s house is the second to be built at the Burpengary site and they hope to move in around May next year.

They’ve already met and befriended their neighbour Maureen and made friends with several other couples in the street after attending the regular social catchups.

“It’s very good,” Matt says.

“We know the neighbours and we’ve got a little social club going.”

Marion says she’s excited to have a spare room to set up as a sewing station.

She’s also pleased with the multi-purpose room. She plans to set it up as a media room so she could watch the programs she enjoys.

“We like the idea of having lots of company,” Marion says.

“And there will be lots of activities to do.

“I’m looking forward to doing water aerobics, doing a little gym and joining the community craft group.”

Couple keeps a ray of sunshine in new home

Almost 40 years after moving to Cairns, Jan and Phil Rundle have completed their decades-long meander down Australia’s East Coast and returned to their hometown of Melbourne.

While they’ll take plenty of fond memories of their time in the Sunshine State with them, it’s their association with Stockland’s Halcyon Communities that left an indelible impact.

Foundation homeowners at Stockland’s Halcyon Lakeside at Bli Bli on the Sunshine Coast, the couple began scouting for a comparable lifestyle community when they decided to relocate to Victoria.

“We were talking to Chris Carley from the Halcyon Communities team and asked him to let us know as soon as he heard if there was a Halcyon community in Melbourne,” Jan says.

“When we found out about Halcyon Berwick, we jumped straight in.”

The couple were active members of the Halcyon Lakeside community: Phil as the social group’s inaugural treasurer and Jan as the inaugural secretary of the homeowners’ association.

Jan was a friendly face and regular volunteer at community open days and Phil was a driving force behind establishing Halcyon Lakeside’s on-site bar and its operating system.

“It was a great place, lots of friendly people and a nice ambient atmosphere,” he says.

“There were so many things you could do there, there were more than 40 different activities from arts and crafts through to pickleball so you could do something seven days a week.”

The Clubhouse is one of the jewels in Halcyon Berwick’s crown, a central hub of lifestyle and leisure facilities including an indoor swimming pool, cinema, billiards room, lounge and dining room, outdoor alfresco and BBQ areas, pizza oven, gym, yoga retreat, bar and more.

Already, Phil has expressed an interest in joining the new community’s library and book group.

“I like the ambience of the place and the people,” Phil says of Halcyon Berwick.

“The spread of ages is quite the thing, from low and mid-50s through to people in their 80s. We noticed that at Lakeside and from the people we’ve met, the spread is roughly the same.”

The location appeals to Jan too, estimating their new home is only a four-minute drive from where their eldest daughter lives.

Husband and wife bowled over by Halcyon Berwick

It didn’t take long for Tony and Val Wynen to bowl over their new neighbours.

The Wynen’s are avid lawn bowlers and started sharing their tips and techniques with the close-knit community at Stockland’s Halcyon Berwick soon after they moved in.

“Everyone who’s come along to try it with us so far has loved it and there’s some homeowners who show real potential,” Val says.

Remaining close to their family, friends and the Berwick Bowls Club was an important consideration when the long time Berwick residents decided to downsize.

Their interest was piqued by Halcyon Berwick, set within beautiful natural reserves, lakes and open green spaces in the Stockland masterplanned community of Minta, and the decision was made almost as soon as they set foot inside the display home.

“Our daughter lives at Minta only about eight minutes walk from us so we see her a

couple of times a week,” Val explains.

“There’s a good range of people here –some single younger women in their early 60s who are working still, a lot in their 70s and we’re in our 80s – and we all seem to get on well together.”

“We have Happy Hour on a Friday night where everyone brings a plate to share, and we get to know different people.”

With a professional background in real estate, Tony says he was impressed by the financial certainty and transparency that came from buying into the community including no stamp duty, no exit fees or deferred management fees and leasing in perpetuity.

“Stockland doesn’t take anything off your sale price when you sell your property down the track and that was important to me,” he says.

“The sale price was good; this suburb has a good reputation, and the facilities are just out of this world – everything you need is here.”

What’s the ‘real’ question?

“R U OK, mate?”, goes your opening gambit.

Now, how reliable will his response be? That’s the ‘real’ question.

Unfortunately, “R U OK?” seemingly remains an awkward mental health question for many men of our vintage. Perhaps “R U OK?” teeters on the brink of becoming another throw-away question like, “How’re you going, mate?” To which most Halcyon Parks’ men will come back to you with one of a bagful of comic, but tired old responses. Nevertheless, you’ll still chuckle.

Both of you might just have missed a potential opportunity to share something mentally important.

Kate Clark, the Community Manager of Stockland’s Halcyon Parks, invited 12 men to a 2022 R U OK? day at a Noosa craft brewery. She provided the community bus and gave us an opportunity to talk mental

health turkey over a beer.

Conversation was a bit guarded on the 40-minute drive to Noosa. Men behaving normally, you might say. Then during lunch, our boys heard a story or two which starkly illustrated men’s reluctance to problemshare. We took it all in. OK, we also took in a beer or two, if only to prove Halcyon Parks’ men can do multiple things simultaneously.

Now because of Kate’s initiative, the Halcyon Parks’ bus takes men out for regular mateship evenings. They anticipate the Big Question at some point. They also expect not to be judged. Just a chance to talk to tuned-in ears. Who knows, perhaps it’ll work in someone’s mental favour one evening. Thanks for the nudge, Kate.

Have you been OK lately, mate?

Sandy starts her next chapter at

B BY HALCYON

She took the plunge and decided to write and self-publish her memoir, Here I Go Again, as way of chronicling her travels, many of them following her husband of 42 years, former BHP engineer Tony, on his many overseas postings.

“In the many hours I spent recording my story, I still kept needing to push aside the ‘people won’t be interested’ thoughts,” Sandy says.

“Hopefully, the ‘of course they will’ thoughts won the day and my story is an interesting one and I actually enjoyed its therapeutic value.”

In the couple’s latest chapter, they have moved into Stockland’s B by Halcyon (QLD), which will be a far more relaxed lifestyle than some of their previous locations.

“Considering the quite different life I have led, I still consider myself very lucky that a young engineer named Tony walked into my salon for a haircut,” she says in her book.

“A more caring, kind, understanding, generous, (a little quiet) husband I could not wish for.”

WALK THIS WAY

Strut your stuff for better strength, mood, and fitness.

Touted as the closest thing we have to a wonder drug, the act of placing one foot in front of the other has some seriously impressive perks. Walking can improve your health in more ways than you might expect – not only does it have an array of physical benefits, but it comes with a host of mental ones too. And despite popular belief, physical activity doesn’t need to be complicated – a simple daily walk will help you live a healthier life with the ability to maintain healthy body weight, improve cardiovascular fitness, strengthen bones, increase energy levels, improve mood, the list goes on!

For too long we have worshipped the idea of vigorous exercise and fast-paced lifestyles but these days we are bombarded with wellness advice to slow down instead – from slow food and slow fashion to slow living, it comes as no surprise that slow fitness is certainly no exception to the rule! So, without further ado, here’s why walking is one of the best forms of exercise that can be done anywhere and anytime (it also makes for a great excuse for some much-needed ‘me’ time).

Breathwork techniques to start the day with vitality:

• 4-7-8 breathing (inhale for four seconds, hold for seven seconds, exhale for eight seconds, and repeat)

• Alternate nostril breathing

• Belly breathing

• Diaphragmatic breathing

Disclaimer:

22 STOCKLAND | HALCYON COMMUNITIES
Be sure to see your doctor for a medical check-up before embarking on any fitness journey.

PHYSICAL BENEFITS

Walking is a gentle, low-impact exercise that can provide many physical advantages, in addition to the positive mental effect of getting out and about. Studies have found that a daily walk can reduce the risk of stroke, reduce days spent in the hospital, and can even lower your risk of death by up to 39 per cent. This is because as you take your steps, your lungs expand and contract – this process increases the volume of the lungs and in turn causes the heart to work harder to push blood through your body. And when you walk regularly, your heart will grow stronger to meet the needed demand. Walking also aids weight loss since it requires you to burn calories even if you’re just strolling at a leisurely pace. Experts believe that walking can be as good a workout as running especially for those that have suffered knee, ankle or back injuries. Since the nature of walking is less strenuous than running, you’ll be able to walk longer and more often whilst still reaping the same benefits.

MENTAL BENEFITS

The physical benefits of walking are staggering, but the mental ones are just as good! One of the top health perks is its emotional and mental effects. Just a short 12 minutes of walking can increase joviality, attentiveness, self-confidence, and creativity! Whereas a 10-minute fitness stride can be just as good as a 45-minute workout when it comes to relieving the symptoms of anxiety.

GET STARTED

There’s no need to train for a marathon or do any other strenuous activity to reap the benefits of a daily stroll, simply start with a pair of good walking shoes and a walking loop near your home. Perhaps recruit a friend or family member to walk with you (and to hold you accountable for a walk a day). Don’t forget to consider your posture, move with purpose, and always opt for a warmup and cool-down stretch. Finally, be sure to set a goal! We recommend you aim for 150 minutes of moderate walking each week.

So, to answer the overarching question, can walking really be your main source of exercise? Yes!

When their friend Carolyn Voss told them about the Stockland Halcyon Rise over 50s community, her referral sparked their interest and that of Tracey’s 91-year-old mother, Betty Cooper.

One referral led to another, and now husband and wife Tracey and Paul will be living right next door to Betty, while their dear friend Carolyn will be just up the road.

Later this year, they will all be moving into the gated community framed by rolling hills that sits on 100 sprawling acres near the Logan River.

Tracey says that knowing her mum would be right next door gave her a wonderful sense of security.

“We prepare all of mum’s meals, so being right next door will be incredibly convenient,” she says.

“And the fact that Carolyn will be just down the road is lovely too because she’s like a daughter to mum. We’ve got a whole tribe coming with us.”

Tracey has fibromyalgia and rheumatoid arthritis which means she has constant pain and is sometimes in bed for days.

Knowing that there would be plenty of activities to keep Paul busy when she isn’t

A community of support

feeling great also makes her happy.

“He won’t be housebound because there will be lots of things for him to do.” Plus, the rural backdrop to the community was something that appealed to all of them.

“The drive to Halcyon Rise is just so beautiful,” Tracey says.

“There are paddocks with cows – you feel like you are in the middle of the country but the shopping centre is just five minutes up the road – it’s just beautiful out there.”

Betty is looking forward to social functions where she can get up and dance and Tracey is looking forward to the organised picnics with grandchildren, craft classes, and being with like-minded people.

“We are all so excited,” Tracey says, “it will be here before we know it, it’s going to be such a nice place to come home to.”

Stockland Halcyon rewards all referrals with $1,500 cash and a $500 charity donation of their choice. Carolyn is donating $500 to the Melanoma and Heart Foundation. Tracey and Paul are contributing their $500 to Legacy because the charity supported Betty after she lost her husband when Tracey was just four.

PROFILE

Come fly with me

For those who are spreading their wings and taking their travels to the air this season, there’s every likelihood that it’ll be the first overseas trip in a long time, and potentially more than a little nerve-wracking. But travel isn’t just about memories and experiences, it’s also a gateway to better emotional and physical health. So, to help quell any fears and get those enthusiasm levels to new heights, we’re taking you through the what to do’s, how to prepare, and even where to go for the most seamless and memory-laden trip of your life.

Like most things that push the limits of our comfort zones, when it comes to air-travel, the positives far outweigh any negatives you might consider. After all, going anywhere at all can be hugely beneficial in terms of mental health and physical longevity, not to mention there’s the invaluable chance to expand your horizons (literally). According to a 2013 study by The Global Commission on Ageing, that footloose and fancy-free feeling you get when travelling isn’t just in your head. Research shows that women who vacation twice a year have a significantly lower risk of coronary death or failure than women who only vacation once every six years or less; while men who do not take an annual vacation have a 30 per cent higher risk of death from heart disease than men who do. It was also found that after only 24-48hrs of holidaying, 89 per cent of study participants saw a significant drop in stress.

So, what is it about travel that benefits our health so much? Well, according to Adam Galinsky of Columbia Business School, “Foreign experiences increase both cognitive flexibility.” Apparently, the key is the “multicultural

engagement, immersion, and adaptation,” that one experiences when travelling somewhere new. But more than being inspirational, travel is also helpful on an immune level. According to Joel Weinstock of Tufts Medical Centre, when you venture out to new places, your body automatically adjusts to a huge number of new bacteria, strengthening your antibodies significantly.

But the fun (and benefits), start way before the trip even begins. According to a study conducted by Cornell University in 2014, people are significantly happier when planning a trip, even if they don’t end up taking it. So, make sure that you cash in on the true benefits of travel by having fun with planning. Not sure where to start? Once you’ve worked out where you want to go, check out the weather to make sure you have the appropriate clothing for not only your destination, but the activites you do while there. Another tip? While bookstores are awash with out-of-date travel guides, visiting a trusted agent is one of the best ways to get tips on what to do, get the best deals, and the best price on your flights. It’s an agents’ job to keep up to date on everything you need to know, so you can trust that their on the ground advice will be second-to-none.

ALASKA

Cruising through the Alaskan glaciers is a refreshing way to see everything from icy outcrops to wildlife, and the untamed beauty of their national parks – minus the footwork.

EGYPT

Experience the wonders of ancient Egypt from the comfort of your very own cruise. See everything from the pyramids to Alexandria and make friends for life along the way. What could be better than floating through the reeds, while playing cards and sipping on a traditional Egyptian brew?

FLORIDA

The leisure capital of America, Florida is the perfect place to hire a car and take the long way round. From world-class golf courses to the unbeatable night-life in Miami and the vineyards of Naples, every day (and every stop) will bring something new.

UK

There’s nothing more grounding than time spent in nature, so make like Elizabeth Bennet and join one of the many British gardens’ tours on offer for an intimate look at the UK’s best gardens. You might even get a glimpse of Pemberley (or Lyme Park as it’s properly known!).

Our go-to plane bag inclusions…

1. A clear cosmetic case

This makes the process through security seamless, as you won’t have to pull all of your cosmetics and liquids out individually.

2. Something warm

Planes and airports are notoriously cool no matter the weather, so make sure you bring a light layer (a pashmina works well) that can double as a blanket in case you feel the chill.

3. A large reusable water bottle

As planes are climate-controlled, they can be very dry environments and getting a drink of water can not only be expensive, but time-consuming. Just make sure you empty it before you go through security as for most international flights you won’t be able to take any liquids through over 100ml.

4. Wet wipes and/or hand sanitiser

Essential no matter where you’re going. You will use them everywhere and for everything.

5. A good book

There’s nothing like a great read to get you through a flight – long or short haul!

6. Compression socks

Avoid deep-vein thrombosis and keep your feet warm while you fly.

For the FUR OF IT

Everything you need to know about the power of pets.

Easy to implement training tips:

1. Start with the basics –think sit, stay, and lay

2. Socialise your furry friend – daily walks will do the trick

3. Know when to be strict

4. Give treats as a reward

5. Consult an expert when needed

We believe that pets are part of the family, they fill our lives with joy and keep us happy, healthy, and active. They are a source of unconditional love, companionship, and entertainment – so whether you’ve vowed that your pet-ownership phase is over or are contemplating adopting a four-legged friend, we think these facts might just sway you to welcome a new family member into your home.

While all the pet parents out there can certainly attest to the many benefits of living with a beloved animal, we have the ultimate low-down on exactly why adopting an animal is right for you. It’s official, animals improve our wellbeing – from emotional benefits to physical ones – so here’s everything you need to know from helpful advice and pet care news, to how to choose the right animal for your lifestyle.

First and foremost, let’s get scientific! Did you know that pets can contribute to healthy ageing and an even longer life? Living with an animal can increase levels of oxytocin and serotonin for both the owner and the pet (it’s a win, win)! In fact, it takes just three minutes for the contact of an animal to modify the energy frequency of its owner after cuddling up to them. Simply relaxing against your pet can lead to skin, muscle, and mental relaxation. Even the regular rhythm of patting an animal can provide a calming effect – this is because it helps promote regular breathing and in turn, can lower blood pressure.

promotes daily fitness. When you aren’t out and about with your pet, they also offer a sense of companionship, so you’ll never need to feel lonely!

So, now we’ve convinced you, you’re officially ready for the commitment of looking after a furry friend. But how to choose the perfect one for you? It’s simple really, when it comes to choosing a pet there are two main things to keep in mind: primary activity levels and size.

WHERE’S THE BEST PLACE TO GET A PET?

You may be wondering where to look for your next fur-ever friend. Fortunately, there are several options to help you find the perfect pet! We recommend adopting from a local shelter, rescue organisation or the RSPCA.

Although it may seem counterintuitive, animals can also help against allergies and asthma – by having a pet in your household, tolerance to their fur can be built-up over time. This is especially helpful for when the grandkids come around!

Owning a four-legged friend can also help us to stay socially connected and enforce structure into daily routines. After all, taking a dog for a daily walk makes for a great conversation starter with neighbours and

It’s true that dogs have high energy requirements, but there are other animals that have less – such as a cat or guinea pig. If you do opt for a dog, be sure to think about its age and how often it will need to be walked and have playtime added to the schedule. However, if you decide to adopt an older dog, it will most likely require less physical activity.

Next, you’ll need to consider the size of your desired furry friend. We recommend opting for a small household friendly cat or dog. Some of our favourite dog breeds include Cavalier King Charles Spaniel, Corgis, Shih Tzu, and Dachshund.

Living with a pet is like living with an awesome roommate that you can’t ignore. In return for providing your furry family member with food and shelter, they will shower you with unconditional love, and sometimes the occasional surprise gift.

Never too young for a sea change

Jennifer and David Howie recently made a sea change, moving from Brisbane to become the 100th homeowners at Stockland’s Halcyon Nirimba on Queensland’s Sunshine Coast.

Settling into their new home at the end of 2022, the couple, originally from Tasmania, spent five years living in Darwin thanks to a transfer through Dave’s work before a second move brought them to Brisbane.

Dave recently finished with the multinational auditing and financial advisory firm where he had worked for the past 26 years. Though easing back a little, he hasn’t retired, establishing an advisory and consulting business he can run from his new Halcyon Nirimba home at a pace that suits him.

“We are on the younger side of those moving in. I’ve just turned 56,” says Dave.

“For us, it wasn’t a transition to retirement. The number one benefit was actually meeting people. It isn’t easy to meet people in a new city or state.”

Being able to work from anywhere allowed them to make the move as they transitioned to a different pace of life.

Dave’s Mum and Jenny’s Dad and their siblings are still in Tasmania and their son is in Melbourne, so regular visits down south are important.

“We didn’t want a place where we had to do a lot of gardening and maintenance. We can also just pack up and go and feel our place would be secure if we were away,” explains Jenny.

As well as considering the home and community they were moving to in Halcyon Nirimba, they were also inspired by the area’s wider master plan and future infrastructure.

Located on the Sunshine Coast in Stockland’s 2,400-hectare masterplanned community of Aura, Halcyon Nirimba enjoys access to more than 200 kilometres of walking and cycle paths

connecting homeowners to a network of shops and facilities.

Situated at the heart of the community is the Clubhouse which offers a place for homeowners to relax, exercise, socialise with neighbours and entertain family and friends.

Dave and Jen are both gradually exploring the features and activities that they most enjoy.

“Dave was away for a few days recently so it was nice to be able to pop up to the Clubhouse for a cup of tea and to read the paper, or head out into the community garden where it is always easy to find some company and meet a few more people,” says Jen.

“I’m also enjoying water aerobics and yoga once a week too.”

With Dave finishing his previous role just before they moved, he needed an environment where he could switch off and believes the move to Halcyon Nirimba was the perfect opportunity to do that.

“I’ve just got back into sketching,” he says happily.

“I haven’t done that for ages and it’s something I enjoy for relaxation. I’ve done a couple for my neighbours actually.”

After receiving help from many of their new neighbours who answered questions and provided tips as they transitioned into the community, Dave and Jen look forward to repaying the favour to other new homeowners in the future.

“We have friendships that have formed very quickly here. Not just with our direct neighbours. Someone new moves in every month so we are all building strong bonds as we help each other settle in,” Jen says.

A welcoming wave kind of community

Retirees Robert and Karren Strahan were watching television last winter when an advertisement for Stockland’s Halcyon Rise community came on and they both looked at each other and nodded.

“We both said at the same time: ‘we should go and have a look at that’ and so we did,” Robert says.

“And we were both impressed from the moment we first walked through the display home front doors.”

The dog-doting owners wanted more space and a backyard for their Labradoodles to run around, so the over 50s lifestyle community on the Logan River piqued their interest.

The Strahans are the 100th couple to buy a home in the gated community and almost a year since seeing the TV advertisement, have just finished setting up their two-bedroom home.

Their dogs, Coco and Queenie, are happier than ever.

“The dogs have settled in really well,” Robert says.

“They have the entire backyard to run around in and we are really looking forward to having the onsite dog park where we can take them for a big run.”

The Strahans have moved from a two-bedroom Wynnum unit and away from wonderful friendships they have fostered for over 16 years, but say that they’ve already made new friends to add to their existing ones.

“We walked into happy hour recently and

straight away a couple we’ve never met were waving us down and inviting us to sit with them,” Robert says.

“I can’t get around the golf course like I used to so I’m planning on learning lawn bowls and this couple have already asked me to a game!”

Robert says they’ve already met all the neighbours on their street and they are thrilled their new community is just as friendly as Wynnum.

“We were both impressed with the welcome we received from the very beginning,” Robert says.

“We were walking the dogs yesterday and people at the far end of the street just spotted us and waved, workmen have walked past us and said ‘good morning’ and that’s the atmosphere that attracted us to Halcyon Rise – it’s not by chance! That warm welcome is fostered by management.”

Karren says she is excited about the new facilities and is particularly looking forward to starting aqua aerobics.

“It was difficult to move away from Wynnum but we love living here.”

“After we looked around at what else was available, it was a very easy decision to move.”

Love actually

Colin and Conal VISION BY HALCYON

For Conal and Colin, theirs was an instant attraction. Conal was at the beginning of his career as an opera singer and in the early throes of romance, the duo plotted their escape to Europe as he sang the world’s most famous stages. In Colin’s words, “if there had been a Tinder in those days, we would have instantly deleted our profiles.” Living their real life fairytale, the two spent their early years together, pursuing their dreams in Europe from the early 80s.

After eventually moving back down under, the two first spotted Vision by Halcyon when they were looking for a change of pace and a place to call home for their whippet Angus. “It was immediately clear that Vision was a secure and

welcoming place to live – on our first inspection we knew that this was the house for Angus,” Colin says.

Now, having been a part of the community for two years, the trio are officially part of the furniture. “We have lived in many different houses and apartments but there has never been the community feeling that we have here. It’s a totally different way of life with everyone being so welcoming and inclusive – we even had our wedding in our garden here!”

After 48 years together, and many Valentine’s Days apart due to performance commitments, being there for each other is one of the most important things to the couple and something that has kept them together all this time.

MIGUEL MAESTRE’S RECIPE

METHOD

For the pasta, place the flour on a board. Make a well in the centre and crack the eggs into it. Beat the eggs with a fork until smooth. Using the tips of your fingers, mix the eggs with the flour, incorporating a little at a time until everything is combined.

Once your dough is formed, knead and work it with your hands to develop the gluten in the flour. Squash, shape, and reshape. Pull and stretch the dough, stretching it and squashing it again. Stop kneading when your pasta starts to feel smooth and silky instead of rough and floury.

Wrap and place in the fridge for one hour to rest. Remove from fridge and cut pasta into thirds, then roll out one piece with a rolling pin until about 5mm thick. Cut into 0.5cm-1cm strips. Working with one strip at a time, roll on the benchtop to create round spaghettilike shapes. Dust with flour or semolina. Place on a tray. Repeat

with remaining pasta. For the sauce, heat butter in a deep frypan. Add prawn heads and shells and cook until well caramelised. Add the wine and one cup of water and allow to simmer while you make the tomato based sauce. In another deep frypan heat the oil over medium heat. Add the garlic, chilli, and season with lots of freshly cracked black pepper and salt flakes. Cook for one minute until fragrant. Add the tomatoes, stir, and cook for two minutes to soften. Next, add the prawn meat and cook for one to two minutes, then strain the prawn shell stock, and add to the sauce. Cook for a further two minutes. Bring a large saucepan of water to the boil, add the pasta and cook until al dente, then drain and toss through the prawn sauce, adding a little of the pasta water. Serve on a platter topped with basil. Enjoy!
