elcome to the Autumn edition W of My Halcyon Days. From the moment my husband Brian encountered a Halcyon community he was sold. I was not so sure. I loved the spacious houses, Halcyon’s green credentials and the wide range of recreational facilities but the idea of living in a community? Hmm - it all sounded a bit claustrophobic to me. I immediately thought of my time in an old-fashioned girls grammar school in the UK where the idea of community was to mould everyone into one homogenous whole. It did not suit me then and certainly would not suit me now. I called on my brother who had been in the air force for many years. He said there was merit moving into an environment where there are existing structures, activities and likeminded people. It enables you to integrate quickly and in his experience, make lifelong friends.
Every member of staff goes that extra mile to ensure you are settled and happy and are genuinely interested in your well-being. I have been surprised and delighted at the diversity of the residents, they all have an interesting back story if you take the time to listen and Happy Hour is a perfect place to do so. There is also a wealth of talent and experience within the community which people are only too willing to share when asked to do so. I enjoy the fact that I know all my neighbours by name and cherish the fact that people pass the time of day with each other without being intrusive.
FOREWORD
In this edition In conclusion I have to admit, even though it pains me to do so publicly, that my husband was absolutely right, a Halcyon community is the right place for us! Enjoy this edition. It feels a bit as if I am now part of a big extended family.
With a bit of trepidation I decided to take the plunge and we moved to B by Halcyon. The verdict, five months in? From the start it was obvious Halcyon are in the business of building communities not just houses.

Life is better with pets FURRY FRIENDS ARE AN INTEGRAL PART OF OUR COMMUNITIES
‘‘ Animals are such agreeable friends they ask no questions, they pass no criticisms.” – George Eliot Trish Burger and Pixie, Halcyon Greens
t’s been well documented that Iphysically pets improve our lives – both and socially – by making
us more active, lowering our stress levels and keeping us connected with our community and at Halcyon this is especially true.
Across our communities we have 304 dogs and 79 cats. Trish Burger and her Maltese Shih Tzu cross Pixie, who turned two at the end of last month, have made a lovely life at Halcyon Greens since moving into the community last June. The pair go for a morning and afternoon walk each day, ensuring they have doggy bags to collect any ‘gifts’ Pixie may leave.
LifeBeginsatHalcyon.com.au
“We often stop and talk with other people which is always lovely,“ she said. “I’m very conscious about cleaning up after Pixie if need be as well.” Trish said Pixie has a lovely nature and is very social, especially at Happy Hour. “She loves our street and seems to know what time it is,” she said. ”If they are having drinks across the street she loves to come over and sit on the lawn and join in.” Trish said the recent addition of a dog park to Halcyon Greens’ facilities has added to the appeal. “It’s definitely a step-up from your usual dog park,” she said.
Trish, who moved from Redland Bay, has wasted no time in getting involved in community activities and has joined the Home Owner’s Committee (HOC) as well as helping out with the social committee and bar duties. “I’m really enjoying my life here,” she said. “Everyone is very nice and friendly and everyone respects your privacy. “We have a great street here and we’re all getting along well.”

Life’s purrfect when you have companion cats in your fur-ever home. hen B by Halcyon W homeowners Sue and Gary Hadenham moved to the Buderim lifestyle community in September 2020, Monti and Jesse relocated to the new house, too.
Just like their owners, the 10-year-old male Birman cats have settled in nicely, establishing a daily routine and getting out and about in the community. While Monti and Jesse are both indoor cats, they have distinct personalities and different ideas about what constitutes a good time. “Jesse is a big cat – he doesn’t do much but he likes to hang out on the rug and has a lovely nature,”
Sue explained. “Monti is more adventurous. As soon as he sees his lead, he’s at the front door ready for a walk, while Jesse takes off in the other direction.”
The active couple – Sue and Gary are keen golfers – love the companionship and warmth of their long-haired cats, despite their abundant fluff.
The fluffy felines can be spotted going for a walk on their leads when Gary takes them out at 5:30am daily. While early risers might do a double-take to see two cats on leads, Sue said Jesse and Monti similarly enjoy people watching.
“While they drive me crazy at times and shed hair everywhere, I’ve almost always had cats and I can’t imagine my life without them,” Sue said.
“They sit on the path and watch people through the fence. In the front bedroom, we have a scratching post with a shelf and when we leave the shutters and window open, Monti will sit there all day and watch people go by,” Sue said.
“Pets are important for companionship, especially as you get older. We’re still pretty busy and active in our lives, but I love the feeling of coming home and having their presence around.”

IT’S NEVER TOO LATE TO TEACH AN OLD DOG NEW TRICKS t’s hard to tell, but Honey Cooke was incredibly timid and Iandsuffered from separation anxiety before her owners Steve Julie made the move to Halcyon Greens last year. “She has improved so much since we’ve moved here, she’s so friendly and outgoing now,” Julie said. “Our neighbours love her and she will stay with them and she has her “Nanna Shirley” who lives around the corner and she will go and visit her.” It’s testament to the tight-knit supportive community that Honey, a 13-year-old Maltese Terrier has started to come out of her shell – even at her mature age. “Everyone has just been lovely and so welcoming,” Julie said. “I’m a night owl and Honey and I like to take a wander out in the street.” The couple, who have lived on the Gold Coast since 1987, and spent many years working at SeaWorld and Movie World made the move to Halcyon Greens from their townhouse complex in Hope Island at the end of last year. “We got tired of the people coming and going and there really wasn’t a feeling of community there,” Steve said.

“We were very excited to move into our home and we really are making the most of it.”
WOOF BY HALCYON alcyon Greens is the latest H community to get their own off-leash park for our furry homeowners to enjoy.
Our two newest communities B by Halcyon and Halcyon Rise will also have a private off-leash dog park as construction on facilities progresses through the year. They join Halcyon Glades which has had its own private park since 2019, which is well used by homeowners and their pets. For Gill West, who lives directly opposite the park, it was one of the deciding factors in choosing her new home at Glades. The space is ideal for her highenergy Papillion cross, Mia. “It’s tremendous to have the dog park just over the road. LifeBeginsatHalcyon.com.au
I’m over there three or four times a day,” she said. “If Mia looks out the window and sees that someone’s over at the dog park then she wants to go over.” Gill said the park was another way to meet other homeowners at Glades. “It gets used a lot and more and more people are coming along with their dogs,” she said. From corporate to coastal chic Words by Wendy Mosley
e moved from the UK in 2019 and were so happy when we W became foundation homeowners at B by Halcyon in Buderim.
Everyone has been so lovely and we have made real friendships very quickly – so quickly that I wasn’t in the least bit offended when Jo (Feiner) said to me one night: “Wendy, you always look lovely, but you’re so formal with your suits and high heels. You need to loosen up a bit, this is Queensland.” She was saying it in a fun way and some other ladies heard and joined in on the conversation. I had mentioned I needed to find some brighter colours because I
was wearing my corporate clothes from England, lots of navy and grey. I also told them that I had been to Sunshine Plaza but didn’t really like anything because the shopping centre has a lot of brands from Sydney and Melbourne. They then concocted a plan for us to take the community Tesla on a shopping spree in Cotton Tree, where there is a block of lovely boutiques. Unfortunately it was teeming with rain on the Friday we had planned it, so I ended up going there myself the following Monday. I went to the first boutique on the corner and said to the sales assistant whose name was
Carol: “I need sorting out, help turn me into a Queenslander.” Carol took on the challenge and we had a wonderful morning. She really pushed me out of my comfort zone. I didn’t go into any of the other shops on that block, but I emerged a few hours later with 11 pieces. I’ve been gradually turning up to events in the community in my new clothes and everyone has given me the thumbs up and remarked that “I’m looking like a Queenslander.” It really illustrates how friendly and welcoming everyone at B by Halcyon is. We’re so lucky to be living here. We came to Australia because we wanted an adventure and we’re certainly having the time of our life. AUTUMN 2021 | 7

Serial movers find their forever home
A question to ask yourself when you’re thinking about moving to an over 50s community? What are you looking for, what kind of community do you want?
fter moving 23 times in 20 years across a A number of countries, Yvonne and Chris Henry have found their forever home.
“This is the best move we’ve ever done,” Yvonne said from her Halcyon Waters home in Hope Island. “We love it here, we’ve really settled into the community and everyone has been so friendly and welcoming.” A truly international couple, Yvonne is originally from Brazil and Chris from the United Kingdom, and the pair met while working for British Airways in Miami, Florida. From there, they spent the next two decades living in Papua New Guinea, Thailand, Vietnam and in inner-city and suburban Sydney before settling in Brisbane. “We were living in an apartment complex in Fortitude Valley and even though it’s incredibly busy, we were looking for a community to feel part of,” Chris said. When the pandemic hit in early 2020, the sense of isolation even in a busy city, really started to hit home. “The only time you really see someone when you live in an apartment is when you’re in the lift and during COVID, you weren’t allowed to be in the lift with anyone,” Chris said. Yvonne added: “It was time for us to find a community because life was getting really boring.” The couple made the decision to sell and move to Halcyon Waters and have jumped into community life with gusto. Yvonne has joined community classes including Zumba, aquarobics and Revive while Chris has been trying his hand at table tennis, lawn bowls and volunteering in the bar. “We’re really enjoying our time here and we have made so many new friends,” Chris said. “It really has been the best move.”

VICTORIAN COUPLE BUY HOME OVER FACETIME
uring the COVID-19 lockdown, D Australians got accustomed to using technology to carry out their day- to-day activities.
We worked from home, our children were taught via Zoom calls, we had virtual Happy Hour with loved ones through apps like House Party and for Halcyon Waters’ homeowners Paul Earnshaw and Cathy Egan - we even bought houses through Facetime. The couple had been planning to sell their home in the pretty Victorian seaside town of Inverloch and go travelling when the pandemic hit. “We had been looking at over 50s communities in northern NSW, but had decided to go travel around Australia first,” Cathy said. “We put our house on the market and it sold quickly, so we had to be out within 30 days but it was COVID and we couldn’t buy.” Paul has family living on the Gold Coast and a few of them saw the Halcyon
television commercial and came to visit the Hope Island community after the couple saw an available home. “Paul’s sister Pat Facetimed us in Victoria on the inspection and had said she was going to play it cool in front of the sales consultant, but then she walked in and said ‘buy it!’,” Cathy said. “We made an offer that afternoon and we arrived as soon as the borders opened on December 1. “We had to order some beds online and we had two camping chairs, but we were here.” Paul said they had immersed themselves in community activities such as tai chi, water aerobics and social activities. “I’m up at 5.30am most mornings and I go for a walk with the dog,” he said. “We’re really living our life to the fullest here, our schedules are busy but it’s great.”

Fay approached Halcyon to apply for the Gold Coast City Council Local Residents Bee Scheme, an initiative to boost the native bee population with $250 grants for hive and maintenance costs for properties larger than 1,200sqm. While native stingless bees are not known as prolific honey

producers, the Tetragonula Carbonaria species at Halcyon Greens is common to South East Queensland and plays a key role in the pollination of Australian flora. With a flight range of up to 500m from the two-tier hive, Fay said the native bees will help to pollinate Halcyon Greens’ fruit orchards, rose gardens and raised garden beds as well as homeowners’ gardens. However, there’s no need for the full apiarist suit – Fay said the little black bees are social by nature and low-maintenance, requiring only a shaded, elevated hive with an easterly aspect and water access to keep them happy and buzzing since their arrival in mid-November 2020.
Native bees busy at work
“They look after themselves and don’t sting or annoy people, which is great,” Fay said. “I check on them daily and love to watch them buzzing in and out of the hive. If you stand there long enough, you can see the little bees return with balls of pollen, which makes their back legs look huge. They’re fascinating to watch as they go about their bee business.”

Two Cities “it was the best of times, it was the worst of times” seems apt to describe 2020. We all know why 2020 was difficult and we’re not going to rehash it. For us it was the best of times because it highlighted the safety, support and social connection Halcyon homeowners enjoy. As we head into 2021, brighter times are here as the COVID-19 vaccination program is rolled out across the country. This will offer all of us an opportunity to be protected against this disease and hope that we
can return to the things we took for granted such as travel, spend time with our families and help others. People often ask what life is like behind the gates of a Halcyon community and the articles in our magazine are the perfect example. They tell our stories and offer the best glimpse as to what Halcyon is all about. Our communities offer our homeowners a launchpad for them to enjoy their lives, explore new passions and rediscover old ones. It’s a launchpad which allows them to take it on or take it easy, to lean in or lean back, to discover their freedom and do

Machines that go ‘ping’
Words by Geoff Shearer
A stalwart journalist for News Ltd for 20 years and a former TV Week Features Editor, Geoff Shearer is one the country’s most admired arts and entertainment writers. He’s taken a step into semi-retirement to concentrate on his fiction writing, while relishing the chance to share his unique take on life with My Halcyon Days’ readers. “
W
HO you calling an asystole?”
Look it up if you need to, but it means flatline. Which is kind of where that pun went. You know, when the machine beside the hospital bed on Grey’s Anatomy goes from “blip … blip” to “bbbrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr”.
Anyway, that was the pun running through my head as I lay on a trolley, connected up to all sorts of medical machines for a routine angiogram recently, hoping I wouldn’t make an asystole of myself. It also got me thinking about those machines, which we kind of take for granted nowadays, and how we were actually fearful of things like ECGs, EEGs, MRIs, when they started flooding hospitals in the 1970s-1980s. Jefferson Airplane stalwart Grace Slick questioned them in All The Machines, a single she released in 1984. “Doctor goes into a room with a fourfoot metal box; He pushes one of its buttons and listens to it talk,” she sings, “Fourteen years in medical school and the machines are doing his job. All the doctors listen to what the machines have to say. All the machines say I’m OK.” The inference is that she’s not feeling okay but the doctors are listening to their machines rather
LifeBeginsatHalcyon.com.au
than her. It’s a genuine fear that some people have to any advancement in technology – that it will somehow lead to the loss of all human contact. Only a year earlier in 1983, the Monty Python film The Meaning of Life, addressed it in the now famous “the machine that goes ‘ping’” skit. Worried that the theatre room in which a woman is about to give birth is “a bit bare in here today”, the doctor orders a nurse to bring in as much expensive apparatus as possible, including the machine that goes ‘ping’. Being a Python fan, I was tempted to flip myself over, face down, as the medics left the room and back again before they returned, once the scan had been taken and I was gliding out of the imaging tunnel. Could you imagine them looking at the scan, going: “Gosh this guy’s heart has slipped behind his spine.” Which begs the question – who would they believe, their machine or the patient lying there in front of them? If you’re from Slick’s school of thought I’d be raced straight up to the operating theatre quicker than you could say “ping”. And just like that Python skit, nearly four decades later, I’d be the woman in the throes of childbirth on a hospital trolley, asking: “What do I do?” And the obstetrician, dripping with that rigid arrogance that John Cleese does so well, would scowl at me and mutter: “Nothing, dear. You’re not qualified!” Asystole.

These include the Sales Office, Walrus and Entry statement along with the facilities that are due to start construction later this year. Rise is situated on 100 acres of farming land. This gives us a unique opportunity to deliver some beautiful open space and pay homage to its history. The ‘Walrus’ and inclusion of the property’s iconic windmill at our entry was a big part of this.

favourites Best coffee? There are some amazing spots to visit, my favourite local cafe is Café on Cusack in Jimboomba. However when at Halcyon Rise I’ll grab my morning pick me up from Café Haven.
I’m happy to say we have some great options. There are so many to pick from depending what you are after and if you want to make a day of it. Jimboomba House has a great breakfast/lunch/dinner menu. Café on Cusack for breakfast as it has two gorgeous shops close by to explore, Feather Road and Folk and Co. Logan Village Hotel, Fitzy’s Waterford and the Bearded Dragon are great for a pub meal. The Overflow Estate 1895 is stunning for lunch or an afternoon cheese platter and wine. Canungra has some great options, Ginga Ninja sushi for lunch/dinner, The Hub Café or Café Metz for Breaky and the local pub is good too. O’Reilly’s at Canungra is a beautiful spot to visit during the week (not as busy) has a gorgeous creek and Alpacas to play with. Sarrabah Estate Winery – one of my favourite spots!!! Grab a picnic, explore the winery, they also have three resident Alpaca’s you can feed and also run a monthly Sunday yoga. Great to visit anytime. Tamborine Mountain’s Three Little Pig’s is worth a visit for dinner.
Favourite spot and why? I have three; 1. L illybrook Camping Area (Western Trail Head) I have horses so this offers beautiful trails and hikes through to Wyaralong Dam but most importantly this is where my hubby and I said I do! 2. M orans Falls at O’Reilly’s is probably the most amazing short hike and offers incredible access to the most beautiful waterfall. 3. Beechmont’s Rosin’s Lookout with coffee and breaky at the Flying Bean Café – absolutely stunning spot.

Halcyon stars in critically acclaimed TV drama series he streets of Halcyon Waters in Hope Island have become one T of the stars in Australia’s hottest new drama series, The End.
The series stars British actor Dame Harriet Walter and the cream of Australia’s acting fraternity including Frances O’Conner, Noni Hazlehurst, Robyn Nevin, Alex Dimitriades and John Waters. Written by Gold Coast born and educated writer Samantha Strauss, the series is also a comedy, albeit a dark one as it explores the subject of euthanasia. The inspiration came from her own grandmother’s experience moving into a Gold Coast retirement home following the shock and premature LifeBeginsatHalcyon.com.au
death of her grandfather in 2003. “She arrived really depressed and all dressed in brown. Dad gave her six months to live – he’s a doctor and he thought she was on her way out,” she told Foxtel’s magazine. “Then she did go wild – she made a best friend called Pamela, who’s the basis for Noni’s [Hazlehurst] character, and within six months, instead of being dead she was wearing a red dress and driving a red car and dancing on tables and drinking atrociously and getting home at 5am. “And I loved it! I was in this kind of in-between stage of life and I would spend heaps of time there because they were such interesting characters.”
A number of homeowners from Halcyon Waters had the opportunity to work as extras on the series, having attended a casting call with the show’s producers. Harry and Marie Louise Pirvics made it through the casting process, with Harry getting a larger role as the community’s piano player. “The irony was Harry wasn’t at all interested and we forced him to go and then he ended up getting a bigger part,” Marie Louise said. Harry laughingly added: “I actually got paid as an actor and shot a bigger scene but then it ended up on the cutting room floor.”
The couple said the actors were incredibly friendly and were very nice during the shooting process. “I got to spend a bit of time with them, mainly with John Waters as we had a music rehearsal session off set and he was lovely,” Harry said. Marie Louise said: “The whole experience for me has been an enjoyable one and I think it is better to have had these experiences, then not to have had them.
Roy Billing plays Art
“I certainly learned a lot about the process, which was very interesting.” While the critics have been universal in their praise of the series, including one critic from The Age newspaper who wrote: “It’s a joy to see older people, particularly women, in roles with genuine depth, and the divisive topic of the right to die being interrogated in such a unique fashion, at once profound and playful.”
Dame Harriet Walter plays Edie
However, the consensus from the community have given it mixed reviews. “I don’t know if we would have watched it if we weren’t in it,” Marie Louise said. “The topic is a difficult one, but you can’t please everyone either.”

RETURNING FROM THE COVID-19 PAUSE:
Cruising’s world of difference
Words by Dallas Sherringham Dallas Sherringham is Editor of Cruise Magazine (www.australiancruisemagazine.com.au) and Mature Traveller (www.maturetraveller.com.au)
he world of cruising will have changed T forever when it resumes late this year with every cruise line announcing rigid COVID-19 testing prior to departure.
Cruise ships will feature reduced capacity to facilitate social distancing as they attempt to create their own COVID free bubble on board. Forget about packed showrooms and the famous buffets, there will be restricted seating at indoor performances and all food will be served by staff. Ports like Cairns, Port Douglas and Airlie Beach will benefit greatly from the fact that itineraries are being designed to stay in Australian waters. Protocols vary slightly between major cruise lines, but the aim is the same for each one – COVID free environments on board. Expect a mandatory COVID-19 test before departure and a temperature test upon boarding for starters. At one stage it was considered cruise lines would make the COVID-19 vaccine mandatory prior to boarding, but this has now softened with a preference for strict testing protocols in the days before your cruise. The major cruise lines like Carnival, Princess and P&O will require a negative test certificate prior to your cruise, while small luxury cruise ships will attempt to get the Australian winter season underway by enforcing a high standard of passenger screening.Royal Caribbean Cruise’s Quantum of the Seas will operate out of Brisbane in 2021/22 and is currently providing short trips out of Singapore. market - over 50s – and because its guests book well ahead each year, it is pushing its extensive record deployments in 2022 and beyond. These include deals offering up to 40 percent off regular fares.
P&O Australia has extended its cruise pause until June 18, disruption its introduction of two new ships,
Princess has a strict protocol in place with a full checkup before boarding, a temperature test and secondary screening on board as required. It will have extra medical staff on board capable of providing critical care. Celebrity Cruises is also aiming at the longer term market, starting out of Sydney aboard the eye-catching Celebrity Eclipse.
Seating allows you to watch your adventure from the deck
Pacific Encounter and Pacific Adventure. Pacific Encounter’s itineraries are based on Brisbane. COVID-19 temperature tests prior to boarding and physical distancing will be mandatory and masks will be required where distancing is not possible. Carnival Splendor sailings won’t resume until June 28, while Queensland favorite Carnival Spirit resumes on September 12. Passengers and crew will be required to wear masks in designated venues on board and during shores tours.
From September 2022 through April 2023, departures from both Sydney and Auckland, the 19 different itineraries will also feature new themed experiences: ‘Sun and Beach Escapes’, ‘Food and Wine Classics’, and ‘Five Star Getaways’. APT is hoping to restart by April using the 99 passenger Caledonian Sky in the ever popular Kimberley route. It has been joined by fellow small ship cruise line Ponant in an attempt to convince the Federal Government that domestic cruising is safe. Ultra-luxury line Crystal Cruise will require all passengers to be vaccinated against COVID-19 at least 14 days prior to ocean and river cruises around the world.
In addition, shore excursions will only be undertaken using providers who can uphold Carnival’s own protocols and if you fail to abide by shore excursion protocols, you will be denied boarding. Princess Cruises relies heavily on mature The Cairns Lagoon at sunrise

WITH IAN SNARE, HALCYON GLADES Ian Snare worked as a counsellor specialising in men’s health before moving to Halcyon Glades from acreage in Tasmania with his wife Susan two years ago. He has a passion for reading, gardening and cycling.
Jack and Harry Authors: Tony McKenna and Mervyn Davis, Australian Arts & Entertainment Pty,Ltd, RRP: $19.50
Set in Western and South Australia in the 1950’s, this novel evolves around two 15 year old boys who are best mates. They live a normal life growing up in the Perth suburbs until they are accused of stealing by another boy. In their naivety they think they will end up in jail and so run away together to avoid the long arm of the law. The book is of their adventures as they learn to be young men in an adult’s world. This is a great yarn. It is a very readable story which sees the best in people. Without violence and other nasty themes, it shows the growing up of two young men and leaves you with a “feel good” feeling as it concludes. I was truly sad this book finished, but there is a sequel called No Turning Back which I am about to read.
The Body – a Guide for Occupants Author: Bill Bryson, Doubleday Books, RRP: $19.99 (soft cover)
From an incredible amount of research, Bill Bryson has written an eminently readable, funny and simply fascinating book about this frame we live within. You don’t have to have a biology background to understand this book …. it is written for ordinary people like you and I. Bryson almost makes it a travelogue where one “sightsees” through the body and all its various systems and how they function and relate. It is the near perfect combination of a good read and a comprehensive biology textbook.I challenge you to do something different and read this book. You will laugh, be entertained and learn a lot along the way.
Any Ordinary Day Author: Leigh Sales, Penguin Books, RRP $19.99
Most of us know Leigh Sales as the highly capable anchor on the ABC’s, The 7.30 Report which I watch most nights. In one part of her professional life Leigh interviewed a succession of people who had brushes with death. Around the same time Leigh also had a personal “close to death” experience. This book came out of Leigh talking candidly to these people who, rather than being destroyed by trauma and looking death in the face, found amazing strength to go on and recover and even flourish in their personal lives. This book is certainly worth a read on a number of levels as it looks at what happens when severe trauma is dealt with by the human spirit within us. I found reading it a very positive and uplifting experience.

The ladies who golf ach Wednesday morning E we hold golf lessons for Halcyon’s beginner ladies, with around 25 trying their hand.
The biggest success story is a collective one for the group. There have been so many ladies who had never touched a golf club before moving into Halcyon Greens who are now starting to get out on the course and play golf somewhat regularly. LifeBeginsatHalcyon.com.au
It’s been truly great to see the ladies growing with confidence every week. As well as offering the opportunity to get some exercise, it’s a sport that’s challenging but in a way where your biggest challenge is you versus you, rather than you versus others. I think a lot of people don’t realise that when they first start out. They think that they have to try to be as good as someone else
Words by Joel Mercieca but that’s definitely not the case. The social aspect to playing golf in general is a huge part of the appeal of the sport. There’s something really great about learning a new skill with friends and neighbours in a group environment. It’s been very rewarding for me to see the personal growth and development from some of the ladies who have been coming to the group sessions.
TOP FIVE TIPS WITH JOEL MERCIECA
1.
GOLF INSTRUCTOR, GAINSBOROUGH GREENS GOLF CLUB
2.
Get lessons - don’t trust your friend or go searching the internet to try to work out how to swing the golf club.
now your body - whilst there K are certain things that must happen in order to hit a golf ball well, there are also many different ways to get the job done. Tailoring a golf swing around your physical capabilities is crucial.
3.
Don’t try to learn too much too quickly - Increase your golf IQ bit by bit. There are key fundamentals many of which revolve around setting up to the ball well before you even start your swing.
4.
5.
Spend time on the putting green - I know most people love the idea of hitting their driver a long way and that is a huge part of the game, but putting is the big leveller in this sport.
ave fun! - remember H why you started. The idea is to have fun and have a laugh with your friends.

“Our son was diagnosed 12 months ago with leukaemia,” Tony said. “He’s 50 and is fighting very hard, so we wanted to try and help. “No-one in the family was a match for a bone marrow transplant and because of COVID, there were no planes coming in from overseas so it has been a real struggle. “Fortunately a match came from a lady in Africa, so he has had the transplant.” Tony said their donation would help the Leukaemia Foundation continue to do good work supporting families through the process, as

The couple moved into Halcyon Landing early last year after being referred by friends, who live at Halcyon Lakeside. “We really liked the idea but there was nothing available at Lakeside, so we made the move to Landing.” Tony said they were starting to settle into the community, as they spent many months with their son in Western Australia. “It was a messy year last year and we haven’t gotten into as many activities as we had planned but we’re starting to do a lot more now,” he said. “We’ve met some lovely people here and we’re getting involved in more.”
