“This project is representative of the future of over 50’s living on the Gold Coast. Communities and facilities like these will draw people from all over the country to live here,” Mayor Tate said. “The Gold Coast is a city famed for its waterways, so it’s great to see that Halcyon has capitalised on this outstanding location to deliver its home owners something very special”. Halcyon Joint Managing Director Dr Bevan Geissmann said the Leisure Club was key to the Vision by Halcyon Master Plan. “This is a truly world-class facility and is certainly representative of our market’s lifestyle ambitions,” Dr Geissmann said. “Living at Halcyon is about being amongst friends and likeminded people and what better way to encourage those relationships than at a facility such as this”.

Halcyon volunteers tuck in
An idea conceived by a group of home owners and Community Manager Donna Osborne, has seen 50 home owners from Halcyon Landing attain their Blue Cards so they could volunteer to help at the local Bli Bli primary school. From the tuckshop to reading, special mentoring programs and adopt-a-grandparent,
the aim is to integrate themselves into the local community and to make a real difference.

The Big Battlefield Charity Bike Ride Inspirational home owner Laurie Whelan, is one of just nine people nationally shortlisted and subsequently selected to participate in a 580 kilometre charity bike ride traversing the battlefields and cemeteries of the first World War. The Big Battlefield Bike Ride, taking place in Belgium and France in June, is organised by Mates4Mates, who support current and ex-serving Australian Defence Force members who have physical or psychological injuries as a result of their service. The journey spans from Ypres to Verdun with an expected duration of five days. Participants were selected from all over Australia and Laurie was the only person selected from the Gold Coast. “At 68, I am the oldest ever to be invited and also the only Vietnam Veteran they’ve taken from the start, with other participants having served in Iraq, Afghanistan and

Somalia,” he said. An active rider, Laurie plans on doing about three 65 kilometre bike rides every week to prepare. “It’s going to be a big ride but we’ll be stopping every now and then so the guides can tell us stories and provide information about the places we visit”. Halcyon Joint Managing Director Dr Bevan Geissmann said the company supported its home owners in their many ways of giving back to the community.
Back in the saddle
“We are proud to sponsor Laurie on his ride. He is a shining example of the attitude we love to see in our home owners, not afraid of a challenge and happy to rise to the occasion for a worthy cause”.

The future’s green with Halcyon Bob and Pam Jones will become among the first in Queensland to power their home by battery as the revolutionary Tesla power-saving system sweeps the world. The semi-retired couple are installing the Tesla system in their new home at Vision by Halcyon that ultimately could enable them to live ‘off the grid’. The innovative battery system stores electricity generated from rooftop Solar Panels during the day so that power can be used during the night. Bob said the Tesla system would more than pay for itself over the next decade.
Halcyon has championed environmentally sustainable developments in Queensland over 50’s communities, receiving numerous state and national awards for environmental sensitivity by the Urban Development Institute of Australia (UDIA). Recently Halcyon Glades followed in the footsteps of sister community Halcyon Landing by becoming just the second seniors community in Australia to receive full six-leaf EnviroDevelopment certification from the UDIA. Certification accredits the project in the areas of ecosystems, waste, energy, materials, water and community. Chair of the National EnviroDevelopment Board of Management, Matthew Gross said Halcyon had demonstrated ongoing commitment to delivering sustainable features for the benefit of its home owners and the wider community. “Importantly, Halcyon has created a liveable community that delivers a positive contribution to the environment”.
“It is a truly ‘green’ development which acknowledges the importance of achieving sustainability targets that ultimately lead to a reduction in living costs for home owners”. “The Recreation Club features a unique rammed earth wall for thermal mass, a green wall, smart solar orientation to maximise solar penetration and shade along with electronically operated louvers for passive cooling. The community also has a garden for the use of home owners featuring an orchard, native bees and a communal compost facility, as well as a bio-retention basin filled with native species to efficiently treat stormwater”. “The homes themselves achieve a BERS rating of eight stars for energy efficient design, exceeding the EnviroDevelopment requirement of seven stars. Most homes also achieve a silver rating in Livable Housing Design Guidelines which promotes ageing in place,” he said.
Bob Jones plans to power his home with a Tesla system
“As well as the financial spin-off, we’ll be able to significantly reduce our carbon footprint,” he said. “Being less reliant on the electricity grid means we are insulated from energy price rises and the inconvenience of black-outs”. The Jones’ two-storey waterfront home features a lift, several entertainment zones and includes two marina berths. The couple also plan to incorporate a state-ofthe-art C-Bus Home Management System that controls everything electronic, from the lights to the air-conditioning, all from their iPad. Halcyon Joint Managing Director Dr Bevan Geissmann said the Jones’ were representative of a growing number of modern seniors who sought energy efficiency and technological innovations in their homes.
Following the footsteps of Halcyon Landing, Halcyon Glades has become only the second seniors community in Australia to receive full six-leaf EnviroDevelopment certification
“This is the way of the future and we are currently looking at how we can incorporate Tesla into the final release of homes at Vision by Halcyon and future Halcyon communities”.

Halcyon cleans up!
An army of home owners from across all the Halcyon communities were on hand to roll up their sleeves to do their bit for Clean Up Australia Day, collecting kilograms of rubbish from around their local area’s. Halcyon Glades Community Manager Tracey Yeo said the response to the initiative was excellent. “The best part of the day was when a father and his son were driving past and pulled over to each home owner in a two kilometre radius and offered bottles of water, to me, that’s true community spirit,” she said. “Every home owner involved was so willing to lend a hand and clean up the surrounding streets, it was just amazing”.
Game, set and Pickleball It all began with an overseas phone call from avid Pickleball devotees, Arizona couple Ron and Gayle Groff who were planning a holiday down under and keen to take on some locals in their game of choice. One thing led to another and the couple were put in contact with
