In reflecting on 2016, one thing is quite apparent, it’s been a year of long shots.

The biggest of which must be the American President-elect, Donald Trump. It turns out the US election wasn’t a drawn out dream and the face of reality TV show ‘The Apprentice’ is to be

the new leader of the free world.

Staying in the U.S but perhaps on a brighter note, the Chicago Cubs took home the National League Championship Series – ending a 108-year World Series Championship drought for the team, must be one of the long shot highlights. On our home turf,

we’d hazard a guess that very few of us picked this year’s Melbourne Cup winner or the NRL Premiers.

So it’s fair to say that 2016 has been a year of unpredicted change. Some of us have been left scratching our heads, but for better or worse, it’s a different world now to what it was 12 months ago.

A booming start and record sales by the lake Halcyon’s long-standing reputation and presence on the Sunshine Coast has resulted in record sales, at what can only be described as a booming start for it’s exciting new lakeside community in Bli Bli. Stage One and Stage Two. A record crowd of more than 600 curious onlookers filed through the gates to attend the recent first Open Day, walking the streets and taking the opportunity to inspect the four new superior energy rated Display Homes.

With 40 homes completed and 80 home owners now living in their new homes, excitement is mounting and plans are well underway for the community’s first big bash with almost 100 home owners set to be living at Halcyon Lakeside by Christmas.

Halcyon home powered by Tesla... it’s only natural Forward thinking, semi-retired couple Robert and Pam Jones may not have to worry about power bills ever again now that they have moved into their new waterfront home at Vision by Halcyon on Hope Island.

Their home is the first TESLA battery-powered home to be completed in an Australian over 50’s community and with power generated by solar panels, the Jones’s can almost disconnect from the grid.

“This is an investment that will pay for itself over the next decade while allowing us to tread more lightly on the earth,” he said. “We don’t need to worry about energy price rises and power blackouts”.

The first of its kind to be approved in Queensland, the innovative home is equipped with a Bradford Solar ChargePack incorporating a Tesla Powerwall system, which stores electricity generated from rooftop solar panels during the day.

Halcyon Joint Managing Director Dr Bevan Geissmann said a second battery powered home was under construction at Vision by Halcyon.

“The modern senior is surprisingly one of the strongest adopters of technology within their homes,” Dr Geissmann said. “They see the financial spin-off and are willing to invest now for their future”.

That power can then be used at night, negating the need to draw on the power grid when the sun goes down.

Queensland Manager for CSR Bradford Joe Potter said the system had the potential to save the average family more than $2,000 a year on their power bill and allow them to achieve up to 96% self-sufficiency from the electricity grid.

Mr Jones said the installation of the system future-proofs the twostorey home which has an elevator, multiple entertainment areas and a C-Bus home automation system that controls everything from lights to airconditioning.

“This is the leap forward the industry

needed and will provide Aussie home owners benefits like we’ve never seen,” Mr Potter said. “It is the future for energy management giving control back to individual households and enabling them to see, control and manage their own guilt-free energy”.

Mr Potter said the system worked well for retirees who were home more during the day.

“It covers your energy usage during the day as well as being capable of storing enough power to cover an average home’s evening energy usage”.

Vision by Halcyon’s Tesla homes are the latest innovation from the developer, who has championed environmentally sustainable development in Queensland’s over 50’s communities and received numerous UDIA state and national accolades for such efforts.

Halcyon Glades makes history by becoming a finalist in three categories Halcyon Glades has the honour of being the first ever over 50’s development to be recognised as a finalist in three separate categories, creating history at the 2016 UDIA (Queensland) Awards for Excellence.

During his visit the Minister commended Halcyon on its sustainability initiatives in particular the construction of the Rec Club with its eco-friendly, monolithic rammed earth wall and the superior energy rated homes.

Project Director Marie Cone said that to be recognised as a finalist in such a varied range of categories spanning Affordable Housing, Over 50’s Living and Environmental Excellence capped off a huge year for the Caboolture North community.

“Halcyon Glades is a great example of smart design leading to benefits for the home owners.

By incorporating innovative design features like the smart use of solar, natural insulation and water efficient fixtures, the homes here at Halcyon Glades have been able to achieve a full 8-Star rating from the Nationwide House Energy Rating Scheme,” said Mr de Brenni.

“The Minister for Housing and Public Works, the Hon. Mick de Brenni MP only recently officially opened the new multi-million dollar Recreation Club giving us a glowing review in regards to affordability and environmental initiatives,” said Marie.

Brave Barb barbers hair for big charity barbie The spirit of community and charitable endeavours is alive and well at Halcyon Glades after the home owners rallied together to raise almost $5,000 for the Prostate Cancer Foundation. As part of this year’s nationwide Big Aussie Barbie campaign, the community cooked up over 100 breakfasts to help raise funds for the worthy cause. One plucky home owner took it up a notch, making a bold promise that if she personally reached $1,000 in donations, she would shave her blonde locks after growing her hair for the past two and a half years! $1,384.05 in funds later (yes 5 cents – every bit counts), Barb Rollins was as good as her word, courageously facing the clippers in front of the community of close friends who were quick to record the action on their smart phones.

Meanwhile up North...

Up the M1 at Bli Bli the good people at Halcyon Landing were barbequing for the same cause, doing their share and raising more than $1,000.

Organiser and home owner John Dickie said the event, hosted at the Rec Club, involved about 160 people who polished off over 150 delicious hamburgers in the name of charity.

“The day involved talks from nominated Prostate Cancer Foundation personnel followed by the barbecue itself and live entertainment,” said John. Halcyon Landing Community Manager Donna

Osborne said the barbecue was a resounding success.

“People don’t like to talk about prostate cancer, particularly men, so if an event like this prompts someone to go and have a checkup or talk about it with their family, then it’s worthwhile,” said Donna.

“The funds are a drop in the ocean considering what is needed, but we are of the belief that every bit helps. “A number of males in our community have been affected by prostate cancer so this cause is dear to our hearts”.
