WELCOME

Originally from Melbourne, we’ve had the opportunity of living in New South Wales, finally settling in sunny Queensland where we have resided for the past 30 years, due to my husband’s occupation as a civil engineer.

Even before we retired, we purchased a caravan and travelled extensively throughout Australia. While we love nothing more than heading off on our caravan adventures, we now call Halcyon Greens home. It wasn’t a difficult decision. From the moment my husband spotted the golf course and I saw the layout of the lovely, modern homes and the resort style facilities, we were both hooked.

We have now lived here for nearly four eventful years and are firmly entrenched in the community life style. The beauty of Halcyon Greens is that there is so much on offer. You can do as much or as little as you please. There is something to interest everyone, including a caravanning group.

Over that time Halcyon Greens has proved to be a caring and flourishing community. We have embraced new experiences that we would otherwise never have considered and have been blessed with wonderful neighbours who have become our good friends.

We have no regrets and know that our move to Halcyon Greens was the right decision. We are relaxed and contented in retirement. Life is good.

CHAMPIONS WE ARE THE

JOHN SIMMONS, HALCYON GREENS (QLD)

They say that a new trend speaks volumes of what lies ahead, and in the case of Pickleball – the tennis, badminton and ping pong hybrid that’s become a global sensation – it would seem there’s a stronger sense of togetherness, sportsmanship, and joy on the horizon.

For those who have jumped on the craze, and even for those who have witnessed a game in play – the euphoria is palpable, as is the urge to join in. It's no wonder then, that the lifestyle pioneers at Halcyon Communities knew they had stumbled onto something special when they were first introduced to the game in Florida. And, the rest, as they say, is history!

Leaders in the field, the first purpose-built Pickleball courts in Australia were initially constructed at Halcyon Glades (QLD) in Caboolture in 2018 and now Halcyon Communities boast the largest dedicated Pickleball facility in the country, with eight state-of-the-art courts located at Halcyon Greens (QLD) in Pimpama, as well as facilities at many other communities.

According to our cover star and Pickleball evangelist John Simmons, while the sport was slow to catch on within the community initially – no doubt due to everyone wondering ‘what actually is this?’ – after demonstrations from staff, coaches, and homeowners trying it themselves, its popularity sky-rocketed with many community members now playing multiple times a week and even participating in statewide competitions. “I love the social aspect and the friends I have made through the sport,” John, who lives at Halcyon Greens muses, “It is absolutely amazing – I’m addicted!” And he’s not the only one, with Halcyon Glades homeowners Mick Grbin and Maureen Rennie so enraptured with the sport that they ended up taking out Bronze, Silver, and Gold wins at the 2022 Queensland Pickleball Championships.

The buck doesn’t stop with Halcyon though. Avid Pickleball players are popping up everywhere, with an estimated five million players globally from Australia to the US, where it is currently the fastest growing sport nationwide. What is it about this classic sport that makes it so universally beloved? According to John, the magic is that it doesn’t discriminate. “Pickleball is great for exercise, mental health, and for developing a social circle and comradery,” he says. “There’s no age limit or fitness level needed when it comes to Pickleball, anyone can pick

up a paddle and play – some of our homeowners are in their 80s and they’re loving it just as much as me.”

Originally invented in Seattle in 1965 by three fathers (and interestingly having nothing at all to do with its tangy, burger-topping namesake), Pickleball had been largely relegated to small but passionate devotee associations until bursting onto the mainstream scene somewhere midpandemic, via a growing contingent of celebrity fans. Easy to pick up for all ages, Pickleball was the perfect antidote to our communal longing for connection, socialisation, and the outdoors throughout lockdown, and now it seems an unstoppable presence in the world of sport, even with mentions of a potential Olympic competition slated for the future.

Want to get involved? Take a leaf out of John, Mick, and Maureen’s books and pick up a paddle and wiffle ball at your local court (Halcyon Glades or Greens if you’re lucky), grab a friend, and give it a go. If you’re wanting to take it to the next level, or are just looking for an understanding of the game, there are weekly classes available at many communitie s and even games you can get involved in. Touted as one of the easiest sports in the world to learn – you’ve got nothing to lose, just friendships, a new hobby, and a renewed sense of joy to gain!

A Halcyon Glades homeowner of almost five years, Mick Grbin was first introduced to Pickleball when he moved to the community. A noted fan of tennis, Mick was initially cajoled into trying the game by Glen, a Halcyon representative who knew Mick and knew that he'd love the competition and comradery that Pickleball can offer. "Pickleball is a great physical sport for everyone, I really enjoy playing it every week," says Mick, "and there is the added bonus of social interaction with the other players." Indeed, while he proudly won a bronze medal in the Queensland Pickleball Championships singles tournament this year, it was his interaction with others – namely his mixed doubles partner, Maureen Rennie – that led to winning a silver medal at the very same competition, and a gold with doubles partner Keith Bing the year earlier.

After becoming part of the Halcyon Glades community two years ago, it only took Kiwi Maureen Rennie a couple of weeks to integrate Pickleball into her everyday life, and she's never looked back. An avid sportswoman all her life, Maureen has played tennis, squash, touch football, soccer, outdoor bowls, run half-marathons, and now it's Pickleball's turn. "I love the Pickleball community for the friendships I have made, along with keeping me fit," she says, "Pickleball is a great sport for all ages but for the older generation it's perfect for keeping active as it's easier on the joints than tennis, the games are shorter and it's as much fun as you want to make it," she continued. Now more than a hobby, Maureen won bronze in the mixed doubles alongside Mick Grbin at the Queensland Pickleball Championships, as well as gold in the women's doubles at the same competition.

FAMOUS PICKLEBALLERS

When it comes to Pickleball, even celebrities aren’t immune to the lure of the wiffle ball! These stars love to play, and many are rumoured to have installed courts right in their own backyards!

1. Bill Gates – practically a spokesperson for the sport at this point, the Microsoft co-founder and philanthropist has been very vocal with his love for the sport.

2 Matthew Perry and Amanda Peet – these two actors love to get together and rally! At one point Amanda was playing so much Pickleball that she developed tennis (or pickle) elbow!

3 George and Amal Clooney – whether in Lake Como or LA, this famous couple love to sweat it out on the Pickleball court.

4. Stephen Colbert – the late-night host is currently producing a two-hour primetime special on a celebrity Pickleball tournament.

5. Leonardo DiCaprio – the environmentalist and Oscar-winning actor is known to enjoy the sport so much that he plays every single day.

Raising a toast to GOOD FRIENDS

A Sunday drive triggered a decision that prompted four best friends to sell their large, empty-nest family homes and buy into Stockland’s Halcyon Berwick.

Carmel and Ray Williams and their best friends Debbie and Ross Feddersen always knew they wanted to downsize at the same time and move somewhere close to each other.

But until they stumbled onto Halcyon Berwick one day when Carmel and Ray were searching for a block of land, they’d always put that decision in the toohard basket.

Currently in Berwick, Carmel and Ray are just a few minutes down the road from their new community and Debbie and Ross live just seven kilometres away in Narre Warren South.

But the two couples will be moving into their neighbouring homes in Stockland’s first Victorian over 50s community just 48 kilometres south-east of Melbourne later in the year.

“ The way it all happened, it was just meant to be,” Carmel says, “Debbie and Ross are like family to us.”

“ We met at a playgroup more than 30 years ago and we hit it off from the beginning and so did our children who were so close they were like siblings.”

Debbie said the four friends – who have travelled extensively together – have spent a lot of time talking about how if they stay together after they downsize, they will all be well supported in their retirement.

The fact that we will be living next to each other in this fabulous new community is just the best possible scenario we could hope for,” Debbie says “We will be there for each other in the later years if something happens.”

Both Ray and Ross collect wine and are hoping to start a wine club in their new community they’ve got a nice bottle of Bollinger champagne picked out for move-in day.

And one of the things they will be toasting to are the new friends they have already made at the weekly

happy hour social nights.

“ They have some great meet-and-greet nights,” Carmel says. “We’ve met such lovely people to share these exciting times with.”

That’s the greatest aspect we think, the fact that we will never be on our own because there’s so many people in this community and everyone will be together and it’s that social aspect that really appeals to us.”

Both couples will be living in Santa Cruz Way directly opposite the clubhouse which will have a $30,000 wood-fired pizza oven – a mouthwatering bonus!

“ We’ll just be able to stroll over for wine and pizza catch-ups and we’re all thrilled about the gym, the pool and the cinema too. Because we have more plans to travel together, we’ll just be able to lock up and go and we won’t have to worry about anything.”

“As soon as we saw the community plans, I couldn’t put my money down fast enough.”

Loving life in a connected COMMUNITY

Having come from a property in rural Queensland, Robert and Lesley are thankful for their new life at Halcyon Nirimba. “ We are very grateful every single day we live here and it has far exceeded our expectations, even though they were high,” Lesley says.

“ That’s our philosophy though, there’s so much here to enjoy.”

The couple decided to make the move from their acreage property in Kilkivan, near Gympie and were drawn to Stockland as Robert once worked for the company.

“ We loved living at Kilkivan,” Lesley says, “but we knew we would have to make the move as there were no medical facilities nearby and as you get older that is a consideration.”

Robert added, “when we saw it was Stockland building the community, we knew it would be good.”

“ We said ‘this is for us, and if we’re ever going to do it, now is the time.’”

The couple recently celebrated their first year anniversary at Halcyon Nirimba, which enjoys access to more than 200km of walking and cycling paths connecting homeowners to a network of shops and facilities.

“It’s been a wonderful year and community living is great because you have the option of joining in with activities or other events and groups,” Lesley says.

“It’s nice to have people around you as you can be with them when you choose and we all have fun, but then you can have peace and quiet when you want it as well,” Robert adds.

The couple have two sons in Brisbane and a daughter and granddaughter living nearby on the Sunshine Coast.

“All the kids are onboard with our decision and it’s great as we see them quite regularly,” Lesley says.

Their children will not be the only family nearby, as Lesley’s sister and her husband are also moving to the community.

“ They will be in a different street to us, but we get along really well and love spending time with them,” Lesley says. “Some people even think we’re twins.”

“It will be great in future years to have that family support and care for each other so close,” Robert adds.

Please call 1800 050 050 for more information or to organise an inspection of the community facilities and display homes.

So many fun firsts to

LOOK FORWARD TO

There are lots of firsts happening in Gaye Applegate’s life.

For the first time in 50 years, she’s a single woman and the 66-year-old is also about to become a grandmother, but that’s not all that’s new!

By the end of the year, Gaye will be living on her own for the first time after moving into her brand-new home in an over 50s community at Stockland’s Halcyon Nirimba, located within the masterplanned Aura development on the Sunshine Coast.

Gaye is already attending social gatherings and has made friends with other women in the same situation as her who were drawn to the community for similar reasons.

“ When you are recently separated, you don’t want to be isolated, so moving into an over-50s community means there’s always plenty to do and you can mix with people when you want to,” she says.

“If you move into a townhouse or an apartment it can be a bit isolating. But in this community, you can be as social as you want to be and I’ve already made new friends who will be my neighbours.”

Her son Bradley and daughter-in-law Lauren, both 38, are just down the road in the suburb of Nirimba, within the Aura masterplan, where they have been living for the past three years.

“I will be able to jump on my bicycle and ride down to see them and the baby and it will only take me a few minutes to get there,” Gaye says.

“ We are all very excited.”

Gaye hasn’t yet bought the bicycle but she’s already picturing the outings she will have on it. It will only take her 45 minutes to cycle to the main street in Caloundra. And she can meet others who like to ride even before she moves into her new home at the

Saturday morning bike-riding group.

“I’m going to buy a nice lady cruiser with the basket on the front and a few gears and off I will go,” she says.

“On Sunday mornings, I’ll hop on my bike and ride down to the Caloundra markets and then go grab a coffee and go for a stroll along the beach – that’s very much on the top of the agenda.”

Gaye’s in the process of buying furniture and picking out décor for her Avoca two-bedroom home and says not having to mow a lawn is a big plus.

“I didn’t want to have to buy a blower or a mower or a whipper snipper and in my new home I have fake turf out the back and a lawn that is mowed for me out the front,” she says.

Picturing her new home and the wonderful amenities right on her doorstep including a five-star clubhouse and a fire pit with views to the Glasshouse Mountains makes her happy.

“I got a photo the other day and the walls are up and the windows are in and that’s exciting because now I can start picturing me there enjoying my new home and the new opportunities that I will have living in the community.”

“I’m just waiting to move and to be settled in my new home and I will be able to sit there and say, ‘this is my new start – this is my new home.’”

Aura is Stockland’s 2,400-hectare masterplanned community with more than 200 kilometres of walking and cycling paths, and lush green recreation areas. It is just 90km to Brisbane and a 20-minute drive to Caloundra beaches. Nirimba is Aura’s second suburb.

Sowing the seeds FOR NEW GROWTH

So much more than a beautiful rose or healthy lawn, gardening is all about the journey – the seedlings you nurse, the weeds you pull, and the time you give each day to help your plants flourish.

The act of getting outdoors and into your garden holds an array of benefits for physical and mental health – it improves endurance and strength, increases vitamin D levels, and even triggers dopamine to keep us motivated. As all the gardening gurus know – a little bit of knowledge goes a long way, so we’ve got all the tips and tricks to keep your plants (and you) happy and healthy all year round!

SEED BETWEEN THE LINES

We all know that the environment is best enjoyed when it’s brimming with life, so why not encourage native wildlife and plants to feel at home? After all, watching geckos gobble up mosquitoes, Blue-tongued lizards sunbake, green tree frogs snooze, and possums scurry across your fence line is part of Australian life!

1. Ask your local council about what plants are indigenous to your local area and if any are pot friendly, they’ll thrive indoors and out on the patio!

2. Provide some open water to allow animals to bathe, splash, and hydrate.

4. Plant banks of the same plant to encourage bees.

TROWEL AND ERROR

There’s no need to sweat the small stuff when it comes to gardening – with a bit of know-how, even the most difficult landscapes can be beautiful and easily maintained. Here are four simple tips to help keep your garden looking its best while keeping it easy on yourself.

1. Never underestimate the power of a good pair of gardening gloves. Having the right tools is the most important part of gardening, it makes all the difference – so be sure to purchase the basics! Think gloves, a shovel, rake, and pruning equipment. You can have the world’s greatest garden with just a few of the right tools!

2. It’s best to get large amounts of pruning done during spring or summer because this is when your plants are getting the most sunlight. As a rule of thumb, avoid trimming more than a quarter of the overall foliage in one go and pull off any unwanted yellow or brown leaves as regularly as possible. Pruning your beloved plants promotes new growth, longevity, aesthetic appeal, and the overall quality of the plant.

3 . Feed your garden with nutrients to enhance the metabolism of your plants. Just remember to opt for eco-friendly fertilisers to reduce environmental hazards. On top of your feeding schedule, create a regular watering regime because water is essential for the transportation of nutrients and sugars from the soil to the roots. When you have a schedule to follow it’ll become like clockwork.

4. Utilise pots for easier accessibility. There’s no need to put your body in harm’s way when tending to your plants, so why not repurpose or purchase some tall pots to get you off those knees and onto your feet?

CUTTING IT VINE

Climate plays a vital role in the success rate of healthy flora and fauna – temperature, levels of light, carbon dioxide, air humidity, water, and nutrients all influence plant growth.

Here in Australia, our continent receives more than 3,000 hours of sunshine a year with mostly hot, humid summers and dry winters. To ensure easy maintenance, it’s vital to choose plants that will prosper in the Australian weather, like native plant species. Australian Natives have adapted to the soil and climate conditions that we experience and they thrive with only minimal watering, harsh heat, unique pests, and cold snaps making them the ideal plants for novice gardeners!

A new beginning

Former couple Russell Walter and Janelle Hudson are such good friends that they have both bought homes at Stockland’s B by Halcyon (QLD).

The pair met each other in Townsville in 1989 when Russell was in the military and became romantically involved for a few years before deciding they were better suited as best friends.

“ There’s not a day that goes by when we don’t speak to each other,” Russell says

“ We have kept a light-hearted relationship as this works well for us.”

The pair have been living in Camp Hill and Coorparoo in Brisbane’s south for many years and now Janelle has started to plan her retirement from a long career with Queensland Health.

“My sister suggested a move away from Camp Hill and into a community,” Janelle says, “I came to B by Halcyon and I was sold from the very beginning.”

At the same time, Russell ha s been toying with the idea of selling his home and decided to accompany Janelle on a visit to the Buderim community.

“B by Halcyon had everything I didn’t know I was looking for,” Russell says, “I took one look and said ‘that’s me, I’m done’.”

The pair are both looking forward to moving to the community and creating a new lifestyle, ironically Russell will move in earlier as he ended up signing his contract first.

“I’m looking forward to getting fit and creating a daily training regime at the Wellness Centre,” Russell says. “I also want to join some of the community groups such as music and get involved with other veterans.”

Janelle is excited about meeting new people, spending time at the Wellness Centre, and indulging in her passion for craft.

“It’s going to be fun just meeting new people and getting into the community spirit,” she says, “We’re both ready to move forward and create a new lifestyle.”

Continuing the

LEGACY

Welcome to spring and the new My Halcyon Days. It’s the same heartwarming and interesting stories you’ve come to know and love, with a fresh new look.

W

e’re also welcoming Stockland’s Food Ambassador Miguel Maestre, also known as the ‘Crazy Bull’ as a regular contributor and also as a VIP guest at a number of Halcyon Communities throughout the next year.

It’s also an opportunity to introduce myself. After almost 25 years working in community design and development (15 of these with Stockland), I’m humbled to be leading the Halcyon Communities team.

Spring is a time for rebirth and regeneration. And in this year, our 70th anniversary, it’s also a chance to reflect on where we’ve come from and where we’re going.

When Stockland’s founder Ervin Graf had the idea in 1952 to build a small community of homes in Sydney’s west, he was inspired by possibility. He saw it as an opportunity to help Australian families fulfill their dreams of home ownership and be surrounded by a connected community.

Just like our homeowners who are inspired

by the possibility of their next chapter and what life at Halcyon Communities entails – fun, friendship, connection, and an opportunity to live their lives to the fullest.

We also continue to be inspired by what is possible. As we move into our next chapter, you will see a new vision emerge for the future of the communities we create by focusing on sustainability, liveability, and proximity to green space, shops, medical facilities, and community activities.

It’s an exciting time as we will soon launch new communities in Victoria and South East Queensland, and in time, other Australian states.

I look forward to meeting with many more of you over the coming months, and as we move into spring, I, like many of you, will be embracing the warmer weather and might even try to get in a spot of fishing.

Enjoy this issue of My Halcyon Days.

CHEF MIGUEL MAESTRE ENTERTAINS HALCYON BERWICK (VIC)

More than 170 guests, made up of homeowners and buyers from the boutique over 50s lifestyle community, were treated to a paella cooking demonstration from Miguel, the Spanish born chef known as the ‘Crazy Bull’. He cooked up a storm in the alfresco area of the Clubhouse, where guests interacted with him while he prepared three delicious paella dishes (chicken and chorizo, prawn, and vegetarian).

Miguel thoroughly entertained the crowd, not just with his cooking prowess, but his singing too. He picked up the microphone and gave guests a rendition of La Bamba, hitting the dance floor to the fabulous Baker Boys Band who were on hand

to provide the soundtrack to the evening.

He also provided copies of his cookbook, Feast, signing each one and personalising it for each guest.

Miguel said: “I’m so excited to be working with Stockland and being able to visit all the wonderful homeowners at Halcyon Communities to share my passion for cooking and the joy of connecting over good food

The homes and facilities at these communities are first class and the homeowners have a wonderful time.”

He joked: “I can’t wait to move in!”

Animal kingdom

From furry felines to cheeky goldfish, chatty parrots and man’s best friend – the animals in our lives are so much more than companions, they’re family.

While it goes without saying that here at Halcyon we love all pets, our reasons for creating such a pet-friendly community aren’t all about keeping the pitter-patter of cute little paws around (although it is a bonus) – it’s actually all about you. While research into the benefits of pet ownership is still underway, what we do know is that they help to decrease stress, provide companionship, keep us moving, help with maintaining a healthy routine, provide a sense of purpose, and increase our opportunities for social interaction – and that’s only the tip of the iceberg!

PHYSICAL BENEFITS

Pets have such a paw-sitive influence on our lives, and particularly on our physical health. According to one study, researchers discovered that the physical benefits of pet ownership saved more than $3.5 billion in public health expenditure in Australia over a 12 month period.

While the need for a daily walk or outdoor time helps with boosting general physical activity, animals have also been proven to decrease blood pressure and cholesterol.

For those who find the motivation to exercise difficult to muster (with excuses surprisingly easy to find), having a four-legged friend is a great way to make walking, cycling, running or just going to the local park for some fresh air a part of your everyday schedule. After all, every little bit counts when it comes to fitness.

PSYCHOLOGICAL BENEFITS

Did you know that when patting an animal, a chemical reaction takes place releasing and producing mood-enhancing hormones like serotonin, prolactin, and oxytocin (a.k.a. all the good stuff)?

If that’s not enough to get you over the line on a furry (or scaly) friend, scientific studies have long reported that animals can reduce loneliness and increase feelings of social support in addition to their mood-boosting influence. From cats and dogs to guinea pigs and birds, the effects are remarkably positive, with therapy dogs proving particularly good at reducing stress and anxiety, but also at keeping you safe when it really counts.

Another silver lining? Better memory rec all! Studies show that owning a household pet for more than five years can delay cognitive decline by 1.2 points, thus lengthening quality of life (and potentially even life itself). While no one’s really sure why, one reason for this is that heightened cortisol levels resulting from stress can negatively impact our brain functions and owning an animal acts as a good-vibes-only stress buffer.

Lifestyle

SOCIAL BENEFITS

Fostering human connections can be a difficult task, but by simply taking your dog, cat or guinea pig (yes, you can!) for a walk, you can build a bridge for social interaction – others are more likely to stop and engage in conversation if you have a four-legged friend by your side.

Indeed according to Halcyon resident Larraine, her cat, Shadow, works almost too well when it comes to their daily bike rides around the block. “I think I’ve created a stir,” she laughs, “It’s a really, really lovely experience [but] it takes me a while to get around the block – it’s a 15 minute ride that turns into half an hour with all the chats I have.”

Show your fur friend some love with these super simple DIY dog treats!

Ingredients

tablespoon of peanut butter

banana

cup of oats

egg

Method:

Preheat the oven to 180 degrees fan forced.

Using a food processor break up the oats into a fine texture.

Add the banana, egg, and peanut butter and blend.

On a floured countertop roll-out the dough and cut treats using a bone shaped cookie cutter. Place treats on a lined baking tray and bake for 15 minutes.

HALCYON RISE All smiles after buying at

Ann and Colin Moody already had their hearts set on a new home at Stockland’s Halcyon Rise, but an unusual word-of-mouth recommendation sealed the deal.

“I’m the manager at a dental practice in Logan Village and a couple of our patients who live there told me how great it is and that it was the best move they ever made,” Ann says.

“ They invited us for a coffee to check it out before we move in which seems to be a common trait among homeowners, they’re all very welcoming.”

“ We’re really looking forward to all the get-togethers they seem to have!”

The couple were living on acreage at Mt Tamborine when they decided to downsize, inspecting several lifestyle communities and houses for sale before finding and falling in love with Halcyon Rise.

The whole appearance of the place looked beautiful – the layout, the streets, and the display homes were gorgeous and very well built,” Ann recall s

“It also helped knowing that the Stockland team would keep it picture perfect.”

The couple sold their Mt Tamborine home the same day they put it on the market and are now overseeing the design and construction of their new home at the Logan Reserve community.

They’ve chosen a few of the upgrade options and

made subtle changes to their dream home including the inclusion of a butler’s pantry, increased floor space, and extra accessibility.

Outside their four walls, the Moodys are enamoured with the surrounding natural environment and green space within Halcyon Rise.

“Coming from acreage with acreage properties all around us, the green space helps make it seem a bit easier for us to settle in,” Ann says

So too, does their new home’s location.

“Our son and five-month-old grandson live at Lota and our daughter and 10-year-old granddaughter are right nearby at Waterford,” Colin says

The couple says their grandchildren are as keen as they are to test out the community’s pool while Colin is firm in his resolve to “get fit” in the well-equipped gym.

While Ann and Colin, a national flooring manager, plan to keep working after moving into their new Halcyon Rise home in early 2023, they are already looking forward to their eventual retirement.

“ We’d like to travel more overseas and around Australia, so it’s nice to know we can leave the house and not worry about it – it’s safe and secure,” Colin says

Coming home to COMMUNITY LIVING

Years after moving from an over 50s lifestyle community, Carol Wilson is looking forward to moving into a new home at Stockland’s Halcyon Rise in Logan Reserve.

“It feels as if I’m coming home,” Carol says. “I’ve already made some lovely friends at some of the meet and greets and I think I will fit in really well.”

C arol lived at Halcyon Waters on the Gold Coast with her late husband Barry before moving to an apartment in Wynnum, a bayside suburb of Brisbane.

She said she was looking forward to having her own freestanding home and in an area which is not as built up as her current suburban neighbourhood.

“I think country life will suit me fine,” Carol says. “I can’t wait to be far from the madding crowd, away from the pollution.”

“It will be nice to have a peaceful and tranquil life and I can’t wait to have my own rubbish bin, not a chute.”

C arol said she was also looking forward to getting involved in lots of community activities and

planned to continue her exercise routine.

“ When my husband died his last words to me were ‘keep up the exercise’,” she said. “I’m a swimmer, so I plan to make good use of the pool.”

The community facilities at Halcyon Rise are under construction and are due to be completed this year.

Homeowners will be free to explore, enjoy, and connect within the community’s lifestyle facilities that are perched above the acres of open space.

The main recreation and lifestyle facility is called ‘ The Homestead ’ and will have spectacular views of rolling hills and the treeline of Logan River.

The Homestead will include a bar, kitchen, private dining room, dance floor, games room, gym, library, massage and treatment rooms, salon, 25m heated resort pool, outdoor showers, in-pool lounges, floodlit pickleball courts and floodflit bowling green, covered BBQ pavilion, and a firepit.

The grass is greener at HALCYON PROMENADE

Of all the five-star inclusions and thoughtful touches within Stockland’s Halcyon Promenade, new homeowners Darrell and Michelle Parker were drawn to a surprising feature.

The option to lay artificial turf in their backyard sealed the deal for the couple who plan to spend their impending retirements hitting the road in their caravan.

“ We’ve got a house now and when we go away, we have to look at things like security and who is going to mow the lawn,” Darrell explains

“At Halcyon Promenade, we can just lock up the house and go – we don’t have to worry about the yard – which leaves us open to do the things we want,” Michelle adds

“Besides, I’m not a gardener so the artificial grass is great for me!”

The couple bought their caravan in March 2020 and while their early travels were restricted to Queensland, they have big plans to see Australia, including an epic trip taking in New South Wales, Victoria, South Australia, and Western Australia.

“Michelle is working part-time in childcare and I’m still full-time but our loose plan is to retire next year and take eight or nine months in the caravan while our new home is being built,” Darrell says

“Halcyon Promenade has a dedicated onsite area for caravans with power, water, and a wash bay which was one of

the things we loved and one of the features that was high on our wish list.”

The long-time Brisbane North residents say the community’s convenient Burpengary location – only 25 minutes from their current Warner home – will keep them close to their family, friends and extended network.

W ith their seven grandchildren front of mind, the couple say the house styles, common spaces, and friendly community will make Halcyon Promenade feel instantly like home.

“I like the layout of the houses, they feel like they’re big without being too big and they come with a decent backyard for what we need,” Michelle says

“ There are lots of green areas throughout the community, which I thought would be good when the grandkids come to visit – they can go kick a ball or play.”

“It feels homely, there’s a real warmth to the place.”

This sentiment extends to the warm welcome Darrell and Michelle received when touring Halcyon Communities throughout South East Queensland.

“ The layout s – both of the homes and of the communities – are designed to be social. There’s parking for visitors and entertaining areas but also, the way the houses face opens them up, makes them seem friendly and encourages socialisation with the neighbours,” Darrell says.

Halcyon Promenade

A new home and a locked spot for the caravan too

The security a gated community offers helped to seal the deal for keen beach anglers Peter and Maureen Hines, who will be living at Halcyon Promenade, north of Brisbane.

The doting grandparents, who love to travel, bought in stage one of Stockland’s 59-acre Burpengary-East development and hope to move in around June next year.

They are still in their 4-bedroom Kallangur home, just ten minutes down the road, and have recently picked up their new caravan a Majestic Knight SLX with all the gear

They have already squeezed in a few short caravan adventures around their work commitments and are looking forward to many more on-theroad holidays.

Peter said they felt reassured to know after they moved into their new community, that the caravan would be stored safely on site.

“ The plan is to move in, lock up, and go whenever we are ready,” Peter says

“I think the beauty of it is there won’t be any lawns to mow, there won’t be any security worries, and storing the van on site will be easy.”

“ We’ve been going to the social evenings that Halcyon

Communities put on, so we’ve met lots of people and everyone we’ve met either has a motorhome or a caravan,” Peter says

Maureen said they were thrilled to be able to personalise their new home by picking and choosing from a range of “impressive high-quality finishes” and said they decided to upgrade tiles and benchtops, as well as put in a butler’s pantry.

We just picked out a few mod-cons that we’ve never had before,” Maureen says

“It’s very exciting.”

The pair are keen golfers but said they were looking forward to learning lawn bowls on the full-sized bowling green and also getting into the gym and inviting the grandchildren around to swim in the heated lap pool.

The Halcyon Promenade community will also include a private nature reserve, a recreation club and bar, a spa, a work shed, a library, and a cinema.

“ The other plus for us was the financial security of not having to worry about maintenance for the next 10 years,” Peter says

The Halcyon Communities staff have been magnificent to us.”

Marylou makes the RIGHT MOVE

Marylou Charnock was terribly lonely after her late husband died 11 years ago.

She says that after losing her life-long partner, she felt like a pot of water that had been emptied out.

Even the thought “I am so alone” that tumbled around her head every day brought her pain.

“It was a frightening and horrible feeling,” Marylou says.

Her daughters all lived a long way from her Tweed Heads home and worried how loneliness was impacting their mum.

So, one of them bought her “a little white fluffy dog with pink ears” – a Maltese she called Taffie – who became her 24/7 constant companion.

At the end of August, Marylou and Taffie moved into Stockland’s Halcyon Glades in Caboolture, ideally positioned between Brisbane and the Sunshine Coast.

“Stan and I had 27 very happy years together,” Marylou says.

“I think if he were still alive, he would love this place and be thrilled to bits that I’m so happy here.”

Marylou’s youngest daughter Sandra was the one who found Halcyon Glades and sent her mum a video of it, and now the two shop together every week and see each other most days.

Marylou put her Tweed Heads house on the market the day she saw her Halcyon Glades home for the first time and both properties settled on the same day.

“It was just meant to be,” Marylou says.

“As soon as I walked through, I knew it was a perfect fit for me.

“It’s not too big, not too small – it’s not too much to clean.

“I’m thrilled with the house; all the finishes are top quality.

“My furniture just fits perfectly and looks like it was made for this house.”

Marylou said she is not jumping into activities just yet but is looking forward to swimming in the magnesium pool.

“I’ve been down to the Long House (recreation centre) a couple of times, and I went to a street barbecue and that was beautiful,” she says.

“And most nights, neighbours a few doors down from me host a get-together where we sit around in a circle and enjoy a glass of wine.”

Selling the home she shared with Stan wasn’t an easy decision, Marylou says.

“It was a nerve-wracking time, and I was wrecked by the time I arrived here.”

“But it’s been surprising, actually, how quickly this has felt like home.”

“I know it was the right decision because it’s heaven here.”

Please call for more information or to organise an inspection of the community facilities and display homes.

Marylou was eligible for the Halcyon Communities referral program because her daughter told her about Halcyon Glades. Word-of-mouth referrals are rewarded with a $1500 gift and a $500 charity donation to a Stockland CARE Foundation charity partner; Redkite, RU OK? And ReachOut.

Marylou picked R U OK? as she says: “My heart goes out to people struggling with mental health. I do understand how they must feel.”

Miguel’s recipes

Paella a la Maestre

Serves 2-3 people

Difficulty medium

Prep and cook time 1 hour

Ingredients

400ml chicken stock

200g bomba rice

4 large king prawns

10 black mussels (live)

6 pippies

4 large scallops

150g baby calamari cleaned and scored

2 chorizo sausage, thinly sliced

50g fresh/frozen peas

1 lemon, cut into wedges (to serve)

SOFRITO

2 large ripe ox heart tomatoes, roughly chopped

2 large roasted red capiscums from jar (piquillo)

4 cloves garlic, peeled

½ bunch parsley

½ bunch chives

25ml extra virgin olive oil

1 teaspoon saffron threads

1 tablespoon smoked paprika

Method

To make the sofrito, place all ingredients in a food processor and blend until chunky. If you don’t have a food processor, then simply roughly chop the tomatoes and capsicums and finely chop the garlic and parsley and combine with other sofrito ingredients.

Heat a 30cm frypan or paella pan on high heat, add chorizo and cook until golden brown. Add sofrito and cook until tomatoes start to become juicy, approx 3-4 minutes. Add chicken stock and bring to the boil. Stir in rice and seafood bring to a simmer. Continue simmering for about 10 minutes.

When rice is tender and liquid has almost fully reduced (there should still be some liquid in the frypan), add peas and cook for a further two minutes to achieve ‘soccarrada’ (crust on the bottom of the pan).

Season to taste with salt and garnish with chives. Squeeze over lemon juice just before serving.

PEDAL to the METAL Put your foot down on a holiday you won’t forget

In the words of Jack Kerouac’s On the Road, sometimes it’s what happens on the journey between the departure and the destination that matters most – and never is the journey more present than when turning the key and taking to the road on holiday.

With the wind in your hair and the power to go just about anywhere at your feet, the magic of the open road lies in the possibility of what’s ahead and the joy of being completely free. Free from the routine of every day, free to simply just be, and with many holiday-goers now favouring the recently reopened skies, there’s never been an easier time to take your holiday to the streets and enjoy the true openness that lies ahead whether via car, bus, motorbike, or campervan.

O ffering a rare time to explore unencumbered (minus a few fuel and snack stops along the way), road trips are not only easily accessible for many, but

according to an interview that psychologist Jocelyn Brewer gave to the Sydney Morning Herald, they also really stack up health-wise. From being more likely to spend time in nature grounding yourself, relaxing and resetting, getting that adrenaline pumping and stepping outside of your comfort zone, and even just coming back refreshed – driving off into the sunset can be transformative in many ways, but perhaps the most vital is that a trip may help you develop new perspectives with which to view and handle everyday life.

So, when planning your next getaway, whether with a strict itinerary or throwing caution (and the refidex) to the wind, remember that the key to any great trip is to factor in time to rest amidst exploring.

Denis finds is the best medicine

ADVENTURE

When a good mate died in his arms in 1982, Denis Bartell’s life started to fall apart.

The pair had been fossicking for gold in a Northern Territory creek bed when his friend had a massive heart attack – one minute he was working alongside him and the next he was dead.

Denis, now 89 and living at Stockland’s Halcyon Landing (QLD), says that afterwards he started to suffer severe panic attacks because fears about his own mortality started to consume him.

A doctor suggested treatment in a psychological facility but Denis came up with a different wellness plan.

“I decided to solve my problems, my way,” he explains.

“My plan was to walk across the Simpson Desert on my own and I made a promise that if I survived, my fear would never, ever control me again.”

“It was live or die because I’d had enough of it.”

Two years later, in 1984, he became the first person to walk across the Simpson Desert unsupported, digging his drinking water from wells on an adventure he described as a “damn hard slog” to leave his anxiety in the outback dust.

“People think I plodded along a road but in reality, I had hundreds of kilometres with just a compass and rolling sand dunes,” he says.

Previously, Denis has explored the Australian outback in a 4WD, on foot, in a solar car, in boats and canoes, and even on camels.

His incredible feats earned him the esteemed title of Australia’s most respected outback adventurer and sparked media interest around the country.

He received the Order of Australia Medal in 1989

as well as the Australian Geographic Adventurer of the Year Gold Medallion in 1994.

He says he always hoped to encourage others to set and work towards their personal goals.

Denis wrote about his adventures in his book, Desert Walker, which he narrated into a 14-hour audiobook this year from the Halcyon Landing home he shares with his wife Jeanne.

The couple has lived in the over-50s lifestyle community at Bli Bli, on the Sunshine Coast, for eight years and loves the “vibrant little place”.

“Everyone is friendly, we wave at each other, it’s well laid out and secure – it’s a neat little environment,” he says.

Most of his neighbours have no idea about his desert days.

“I don’t go around big-noting myself about what I’ve done,” he says.

“But if you ask me, I am happy to talk about it.”

Failing eyesight means there will be no more desert adventures but Denis keeps busy swimming in the heated pool, following other adventures online, dropping a Google Earth pin to “walk” a track he’s trekked before and simply taking a moment everyday to reminisce.

“I re-live my desert moments,” he says.

“I didn’t realise it at the time when I was doing these adventures that I was setting aside a store of images for me to reflect on now that I’m older, but these memories help me to retrace my life adventures.”

Read more about Denis’s desert adventures at desertwalker.com.au and hear more at The Simone Feiler podcast.

The write stuff

With five books under her belt and more words in the works, you would never know that Jenny King lived a lifetime before finally putting pen to paper.

While the urge to write was always with her, Jenny only got the chance to develop her creative voice and her craft recently.

Beginning her career in the legal sector in Melbourne, she worked as a secretary for many years before marrying and starting a family. Life then swiftly transitioned into a new stage as the young family moved to-and-fro between New South Wales and Queensland, supporting her husband’s work as a civil engineer.

A bucket list goal of Jenny’s, her yearning to write never dissipated, with her first story lying in wait in her mind for years. When she finally found the time to concentrate on writing, Jenny first considered enrolling in a creative writing course to assist her process, but in the end she decided to simply just get started. With the book set during the First and Second World Wars, she was determined to infuse her work with a high level of historical accuracy, so the first step in her process was exhaustive research.

Af ter countless hours of deep-diving, Jenny was finally cajoled into actually starting to write by her husband, and to her pleasant surprise, she found that she had not one, but three books in her mind, and so her trilogy: House of Glass, House of Shattered Glass, and One Life Lost, was brought to life.

Post-trilogy, Jenny collaborated with her sister (an illustrator) on two children’s books and the duo enjoyed working together so much that they’re currently creating a third!

So where can her work be found? While she loves to write, Jenny has no intention of being a best-seller, so her books have to be borrowed rather than bought. In her own words, “I write for me and I am happy for anyone to read my books, but not to buy…the reward is a story I have brought to life.”

We recently celebrated the one year anniversary of the first homeowners moving into Halcyon Nirimba, located within the fabulous masterplanned community of Aura on Queensland’s Sunshine Coast.

The party was held in our gorgeous clubhouse with homeowners and friends all enjoying the event. The Paella Fella was on hand to provide a delicious Spanish dinner.
