y graduation to a septuagenarian M will occur in 12 weeks. I’Il miss being a sexagenarian, mainly for the name, which incites intriguing connotations. But I’m very grateful for seven decades of reasonable health and fitness, and for an amazing wife and family.

Popular thinking considers 70 years to be the start of “old age” and that males (at least), if not already, will be immediately afflicted with Grumpy Old Man Syndrome. Alas, what is old but just a number? I had not previously thought about old age until a friend said “you look good for your age” but he would, he’s an antique dealer!

FOREWORD

One month into living in Halcyon Lakeside and I see the septuagenarian era does not mean the gig is up; there is passion and aliveness, no fading away. The platinum anniversary, shared by

royalty, is new silver-white territory of life. There are new things to discover. No need to bore younger generations about things that have little relevance to them; living through times when energy delivery meant coal in sacks, recycling waste meant giving things to the rag and bone man; both using a horse and cart; and global communication was by letter or telegram. Such a far cry from today’s solar energy and batteries, multiple use products, live visual global communications on a mobile phone. In the platinum era we can learn from our youngers, promote our own vigour, embrace new lifestyles while under less pressure and with the confidence of experience and learnt wisdom. Studies have also been conducted into the mental health benefits of having a pet and found:

Pet ownership is encouraged at Halcyon Communities as we recognise that having a furry friend can help with physical and mental health.

According to the RSPCA, research has shown that owning a pet can have a number of physical health benefits including:

et owners report less P depression and appear to cope with grief, stress and loss better than non-pet owners.

ets enhance social connectedness P and social skills and are great conversation starters!

Increased cardiovascular health (lower blood pressure, lower triglycerides and in men, lower cholesterol).

Pets are also great caregivers. They keep us company when we’re sick or feeling down.

Back in Australia, Dalray won the Melbourne Cup while Ken McGregor and Thelma Coyne Long were the Australian Open men’s and women’s champions. In Sydney, a young Hungarian immigrant named Ervin Graf started a small company in south-western Sydney which would one day become Stockland. We have many homeowners who are also celebrating a milestone and are planning celebrations for their 70th birthday. Here are a few of their stories.

It’s our birthday

“John is the 12th of December and I am the 13th,” Vicky said. The pair have shared every birthday and have celebrated their milestone years in fine style, with surprise parties for a few and spending their 60th on a friend’s 117 foot yacht.

GAY HILTON HALCYON LAKESIDE (QLD) unshine Coast native S Gay said she felt blessed to be born in the 1950s in a small country town not far away from where she now lives at Halcyon Lakeside.

“I had an idyllic childhood, we’d come home from school for lunch and go for a swim in the creek,” she said. “It was just magic as everyone knew each other and life was very carefree.” Gay still loves the music of the era, citing 1950s rock and roll as her favourite. “Every Saturday night we would go to the pictures and see Elvis Presley and I remember saying to myself that I was going to go to America one day to see him – and I did!” Gay celebrated her 70th birthday on 31 January with a host of family and friends at Twin Waters Resort on the Sunshine Coast. of Ervin Graf - a young Hungarian migrant who came to Australia on a bricklaying visa in 1950.

The company began to expand throughout Sydney and then interstate over the years.

Having studied architecture before leaving his home country after World War II, Ervin quickly identified a need for affordable housing in the rapidly booming post-war community. He secured backing from Albert Scheinberg and John Hammond and created our first housing estate in 1952.

Ervin’s vision was “to not merely achieve growth and profits but to make a worthwhile contribution to the development of our cities and great country.”

Located close to Sefton Railway Station, the housing estate included the subdivision of a small poultry farm into 19 homes.

Today we are dedicated to continuing to honour Ervin’s legacy by building on those strengths by utilising digital technology as well as environmental and social guidelines to build modern communities for Australians.

Stockland is one of Australia’s largest diversified property groups and for 70 years we’ve been paving the way, creating sustainable, thriving communities where people live, shop and work.

Ervin worked physically on this project, drawing the housing plans, laying the bricks and paving the driveways.

Today, we own, fund, develop and manage a large portfolio of retail town centres, workplace and logistics assets and residential, land lease and retirement communities.

From this small scale beginning, housing activity grew rapidly and the company continued to make a mark on Sefton, later acquiring

Back in 1952 Ervin embraced the emerging modern way of Australian living with a contemporary style which embodied the optimism of the era.

BE CREATIVE

ith a keen eye and an W appreciation for beauty, Julie studied fine art and

qualified as an art teacher in the late 1970s, however she didn’t pursue a creative career.

Decades later when she and her husband moved to Stockland’s Halcyon Greens (QLD) in 2019, Julie found a renewed love of figure drawing and still life painting. “I’m not the sporty type so I thought I’d join the art group when we came to Halcyon Greens,” Julie said. “I rediscovered my enjoyment of art and it was great revisiting things I used to do such as charcoal drawings and oil on canvas. “I always enjoyed figure drawing in college, although I don’t have any live models to work with these days so I have to rely on pictures from the internet,” Julie laughed. Julie has now taken over the art group, which meets on Tuesday and Friday mornings in the art room. The group numbers around 12 people and spans a variety of artistic styles from acrylic painting and abstract pieces to portraiture with oils and watercolours. The group recently staged an art show to launch the new-look creative space (formerly known as the messy art room) updated with a hanging system and built-in shelving to display the collective artworks.

Framing art in a new era HOMEOWNER JULIE MIDSON REKINDLED HER CREATIVE PASSION AND UNCOVERED A LATENT TALENT WITH A LIKE-MINDED GROUP OF ARTISTS Julie Midson

The evening included refreshments so people could enjoy some drinks and nibblies after viewing the artworks and speaking to the different artists involved. Julie says art is a very relaxing activity that is both centring and good for the mind. “A lot of us have dabbled in some form of art in the past, and having a dedicated space has allowed people to explore again.”

Dale Holloway Chris Sergeant

“The art group is just a nice place for people to go with a really warm feel – there is a lot of conversation and we play music and have a good time.” The creative space at Halcyon Greens is available for all homeowners to pursue their artistic endeavours and is often used for classes to learn new skills from their neighbours. “You don’t have to have any experience because everyone can paint and draw to some degree – there is a lot of support within the art group and we all make suggestions to help each other,” Julie said. “We’ve even had a lady who was doing paint by numbers, so we’re a very inclusive group – there is no ‘art snobbery’ or anything like that – it’s all about being creative and just really enjoying yourself.” WINTER 2022 | 11

A PASSION FOR PAINTING

fter years away A from the art studio, Roy Beattie

has rediscovered his passion for painting since moving into Halcyon Greens (QLD).

“When I paint, it’s almost like I’m in a trance,” he said. “I see it, I play with it, I put music on and have a bop to it while I paint. I could do it for hours and hours.” Despite being quite good at art in high school in his native Belfast, he hadn’t picked up a paintbrush for decades as he worked his way around the world as an engineer designing slurry pumps. It wasn’t until he moved to Halcyon Greens (QLD) with wife Anne three years ago, that he returned to the art studio. Roy Beattie

12

“I never had time to do it when I was working and after I retired I told myself that I’d start painting or write a book,” he said. After joining the burgeoning art group, Roy threw himself back into art with gusto. “I tried everything, portraits, caricatures, I did a series on Africa and have painted a lot of abstracts and I try to use different materials,” he said. Roy has become quite successful, selling a number of pieces and now also takes commissions. “I’m just loving it and my wife says they should bring my bed down here to the art studio, I’m here so much,” he laughed. “I said that I could be at the pub drinking instead.”

Marian Young and Jen Christie, Halcyon Rise

Thank you for being a friend Golden Girls move to Rise NEIGHBOURS AND SINGLE LADIES JEN CHRISTIE AND MARIAN YOUNG SET THE SCENE FOR A DUAL MOVE TO STOCKLAND’S HALCYON RISE (QLD). en and Marian became firm J friends when Marian moved next door to Jen’s Loganholme duplex 10 years ago.

“The real estate agent gave me Jen’s number so I could ask about her experience in the duplex and we hit it off from the get-go,” Marian recalled. “Marian moved in next door about four weeks later and we’ve been there for each other ever since,” Jen said. The duo regularly enjoy each other’s company with monthly coffee catchups, lunch dates and regular outings to the movies. As single women living on their own, Marian says it’s nice to have a good friend nearby. “We don’t live in each other’s pockets but we help each other out in lots of ways and it’s comforting to have someone next door if you need them.” It’s this closeness that made Jen reluctant to tell Marian she was moving to Halcyon Rise after a tour

of the Logan Reserve community sold her on the facilities, secure environment and neighbourhood of people in her age group. “I plucked up the courage over lunch and told her. Before I knew it, Marian had set up an appointment to have a look and that was it,” Jen laughed. Marian was also attracted to the lifestyle, amenities and community feel at Halcyon Rise. “It was not even on my radar to consider but the more Jen told me about Halcyon Rise, the more excited I became,” Marian said. “It ticked a lot of boxes for me with proximity to family, facilities, security in a gated estate and the general feel of the place with people of a similar age.” Both Jen and Marian have selected a Beechmont home in the Easy Living Series and will live a few houses away from each other. The new-build homes will be completed later in the year.

While they wait to move in, the active and social duo are looking forward to meeting new people and being involved in all the activities on offer, including swimming and aqua aerobics in the heated pool, wandering on the walking tracks and trying yoga and pickleball. In true Golden Girl style, Jen and Marian are even trying to convince other single friends to move into Halcyon Rise with them. “The people at Halcyon Rise have been very friendly so far and that’s really inviting – you get the sense that it really is a family and a community there,” Marian said. “I would tell other people considering a move to an over-50s lifestyle community to do it,” Jen added. “Halcyon Rise is such a beautiful place with a secure environment, plenty of facilities and people your own age – it just ticks all the boxes.”

HALCYON BERWICK

Boutique Berwick welcomes its foundation homeowners

next chapter and came across Halcyon Berwick. “It felt very comfortable and all of the staff have been wonderful,” she said.

tockland has S welcomed foundation homeowners to its first over 50s boutique community in Victoria in the sought-after suburb of Berwick.

“We’ve come into a brand new home which still has a few touches of our old home, but we’re finding the size very manageable,” Glenys said.

The lucky homeowners were driven to their doorstep and welcomed into their new homes to the sounds of the local Arcadia Civic Band who played a number of upbeat and festive tunes.

“Ray is looking forward to playing bowls, pickleball and the pool,” she said.

One of the community’s first homeowners, Merren Bailey, said they were on such a high after being welcomed into the community. “Driving in the gates in the stretch Hummer, we felt like rock stars with all the cameras clicking away,” she said. “I’ll never forget it as it made the move feel so special. It was such a buzz.”

Martin, Jen and Jessie Rees

Glenys and Ray Parker have made the move to Halcyon Berwick from their large family home of 47 years and are settling in well.

The five homeowners were transported by stretch Hummer into the gates of Halcyon Berwick where they were met by the community team and a brass band.

Inside was a gift of a beautiful picnic hamper, complete with lunch and refreshments.

18

“I’ve always wanted to live in a gated community and ever since I was a little girl I’ve wanted a brand new home, so it’s all fallen into place.”

Merren had been looking “on and off for a few years” for her

She said they were looking forward to getting involved in community life.

“I’m a big reader so I’m interested in the library, getting involved in crafts and also the social aspect.” Glenys said the COVID lockdowns had showed them that life in the suburbs can be lonely. “We would go for a walk and we’d be lucky to see anybody, whereas here there is always someone to chat to.” The final foundation homeowners who made the big move were Jen and Martin Rees with their black Labrador Jessie, who was also given a special welcome. Jen said the welcome was “fantastic” and that they were delighted to be able to move in.

“Even in the short time we’ve been here, our social life has improved with Happy Hour and Movie Night it’s been great,” she said. “I really feel a sense of freedom here that I haven’t felt for a very long time.” “We were just expecting the community bus to pick us up but when the stretch Hummer arrived with champagne we were blown away,” she said.

Merren Bailey

The couple had made the decision to move from their acreage block to be able to enjoy an easier lifestyle and a better quality of life. Jen has Myalgic Encephalomyelitis (ME) which sometimes hinders her movement, so to be on a smaller, flat block with less maintenance as well as situated within a social community was the drawcard.

Glenys and Ray Parker

There is a range of architecturally designed, low-maintenance homes to choose from which are all generously sized, thoughtfully appointed and built to flow seamlessly.

The hub of the community will be the Clubhouse, where homeowners can enjoy facilities such as a cinema, indoor heated swimming pool, billiard room, lounge and dining room, outdoor alfresco and BBQ areas, pizza oven, spa and gym, yoga retreat, community garden, arts and crafts centre, bowling green, pickleball and croquet court, a workshop, kitchen and bar, and even a dedicated dog wash.

Each home also comes with a 6 Star Energy Rating, passive solar design consideration, and the option to upgrade to solar.

“Our homeowners and home buyers are very excited about the start of a new journey for them, especially coming off the back of the COVID pandemic when many people have felt really isolated,” she said. “They are looking for a sense of kinship and to live within a supportive community of friends; it is more than just a home.”

Stockland’s newest over 50s lifestyle community, Halcyon Promenade, is already attracting strong interest from buyers looking to discover a lifestyle streets ahead. Located in Burpengary East (QLD) and only six minutes to Moreton Bay, earthworks have recently commenced on the $260 million development. Regional Project Director Andrew Astorquia said he was excited to see the project come to life. “What we’re creating will be something very special in terms of expansive facilities, quality homes and a focus on eco-friendly initiatives.” “Through thoughtful masterplanning, we’re creating a bayside community with that northside feel; a homage to the quintessential northern Brisbane suburbs.” “Most distinctively, *Halcyon Promenade will be developed across both sides of Caulfield Drive, with the two sides of the community connected by a vibrant, pedestrianised main street,” Andrew said. “Halcyon Promenade will also feature our largest lifestyle facilities closest to Brisbane, so the community offers the perfect opportunity for buyers looking to downsize while still being close to the city.” Halcyon Promenade has embraced the village hub approach to the lifestyle facilities with the leisure and sporting facilities spread throughout the community. WINTER 2022 | 21

BDA Architecture Director Adam Beck said the separation of facilities was intentional, to create spaces for different uses. “The facilities have been strategically positioned to create a vibrant and active community where homeowners can mix lifestyle and leisure.” “Taking inspiration from the location, the design of the facilities will reflect Brisbane’s northern bayside character and bring a coastal element to the semi-rural area,” Adam said. “The designs will include variations of white battens and textured walls, offset by the natural colour tones of stone and timber. Decorative screening will also be used throughout.” “As always when working on a Stockland Halcyon Community, we follow a number of design principles to ensure environmental sustainability is a key focus of the development.” Halcyon Promenade will feature a health club with a 25m heated magnesium salt pool, gym, yoga lawn and art studio; a recreation club and lounge with a private dining area and outdoor kitchen overlooking the resort pool; as well as a 3D golf simulator, pickleball courts and a full size, flood lit bowling green. “We’ve been collaborating with FORM Landscape Architects and are excited to see our vision start to take shape,” Adam said. “Think of spaces nestled amongst lush landscaping, lined with shaded boulevards and visual landmarks.” *Set across 59-acres of prime northside land, Halcyon Promenade has been carefully designed to complement the natural beauty of the bayside environment. * Renders are artist impressions only. UPDATE

Celebrating 70 years of achievement Andrew Whitson

n the scheme of things, 70 years Ithedoesn’t seem long. It’s a drop in ocean of time and a relatively short period in our history.

As you know, so much has happened over the past 70 years to change our world and the way we live. There have been many achievements in terms of technology, advances in healthcare and how we interact with people across the globe. There have also been changes in the way we view our lifestyle once fulltime work has finished. In the 1950s, retirement was a different proposition to the one it is today. Most retirees stayed in their large family home (which they still had to maintain) or they might have

moved in with one of their children. There was no superannuation system so for most retirees, their later years would have been funded by a modest Aged Pension. At that same time in our history, a young Hungarian immigrant named Ervin Graf had a dream to create affordable homes and communities for Australians of all ages. Those dreams have grown over the years into the company Stockland is today. For the past 70 years we’ve been paving the way, creating sustainable, thriving communities where people of all ages live, shop, work and play. Today, we own, fund, develop and manage a large portfolio of retail town centres, workplace and

logistics assets and residential and over 50s land lease communities. We are in the business of creating and curating communities where you can live active and engaged lives. At Halcyon Communities, this ethos drives what we do and we will continue to create communities that offer Australians an opportunity to enrich their lives. While we value all of our homeowners, we extend a special congratulations to those who are sharing our 70th birthday. Let’s all celebrate what we have experienced and achieved over the years. here’s nothing better than T discovering hidden gems right in your own backyard

and the Logan City Food Trail is a sparkling diamond.

Twelve lucky homeowners from Stockland’s Halcyon Rise (QLD), which is located in Logan Reserve (a suburb of Logan City), had the opportunity to explore the region in a guided tour. Logan City is home to more than 326,000 people from 217 different nationalities. From Mediterranean fare, fresh seafood and contemporary Australian cuisine to the best of Asian, Indian and European delights, there are culinary experiences to suit all tastes. 26

Setting off in the community bus and Tesla, the intrepid travellers kickstarted their journey with coffee and cake at Social Sphere Café in Marsden. Next stop was in the heart of the cultural epicentre of the region Logan Central - where the daytrippers picked up delicacies from the Euro Deli and Hamid Bakery. Known as the ‘Golden Circle’ as within 200 square metres, you’ll find Middle Eastern bakeries and restaurants, Indian and Afghan supermarkets, a Burmese restaurant as well as small businesses offering a host of African, European and Pacific Island produce and groceries.

The ‘Golden Circle’ was named by Zane Jackson, a Logan local who works at Logan City Council, coined the phrase when sharing walking-distance lunch recommendations with colleagues. It all started with Zane looking to mix up his lunch selections. “I’ve had sandwiches for lunch my whole life. This amazing array of food is right on our doorstep here at Council, so I thought, why not try it out?” He found a wealth of well-priced delicious food on the other side of the railway line, made and sold by interesting people, many of whom came to Australia as migrants or refugees.

The next foodie stop was lunch at Green Frog Hollow in Logan Village, a lush oasis which is popular for breakfast and lunch and also dinner on weekends.

Back over in Logan at Bee All Natural Honey, the homeowners were entertained and educated by the Roebig family, producers of the award winning honey and proprietors of the artisan hives located in Jimboomba.

The house originally served as a homestead, stage coach depot and holding yards for the famed Cobb & Co stage coach company.

Hundredth homeowner and not out

Chris and Shirley Birch

unshine Coast couple Chris and S Shirley Birch moved into their second Stockland community to become the 100th homeowners at B by Halcyon in Buderim (QLD).

After five great years at nearby Halcyon Lakeside (QLD), Chris and Shirley were keen to downsize to a smaller abode however after looking elsewhere, they found themselves at B by Halcyon. “We had a huge two-storey house at Halcyon Lakeside that we decided had become too big for us – we spent more time cleaning it than we did enjoying it,” Chris said. “The size was the original reason we built the house, but then we wanted a change.” The duo looked at several different over50s luxury lifestyle communities but ultimately settled on B by Halcyon.

“We even flirted with the idea of getting an apartment next to the beach,” Chris said. “We viewed so many places and B by Halcyon was just better than anything we’d seen – simple as that.” Previously living in a house in Coolum before moving to Halcyon Lakeside, Chris says B by Halcyon was full of the attributes they wanted with six hectares of open, landscaped space; secure, masterplanned facilities and a dedicated lifestyle and recreational precinct. Chris and Shirley opted for an architectdesigned Kuranda home, a twobedroom, single-storey house with a separate office and double garage plus a small, low-maintenance garden that fulfils Chris’ wish to relax. “I’ve gardened all my life and now I don’t have to do so much of that – I have more

time to relax,” he said. “I suppose as we get older, security is also a big factor along with the friendliness of having like-minded neighbours of a similar age. “Funnily enough, when we left Halcyon Lakeside one of the chaps at golf asked me if I enjoyed living at Lakeside and I’m not sure how much I told him of how great it is but he bought the next day!” Chris has sold several other people on the benefits of moving to Halcyon Communities, who have bought into Halcyon Lakeside and B by Halcyon. Buying and selling is easy as there are no entry or exit fees and homeowners keep all the capital gains. “The Halcyon Communities model made it easy for us to able to downsize from our larger home at Halcyon Lakeside,” he said. Bird watching wonder at Waters

ird watcher and B photography enthusiast Peter Granfield has combined his passions to capture the many different species in his neighbourhood.

“I had been a photographer for many years and I saw the birds in our backyard and it gave me the motivation to record them,” he said. “Coming to Halcyon Waters really amplified that as the community is home to many birds.” Peter and his wife Jan have lived at Stockland’s Halcyon Waters in Hope Island (QLD) after moving from the Toowoomba region. “Living at Halcyon Communities has given me the opportunity to chronicle 12 months in a bird’s life and really capture the full lifecycle.” He said he had recorded anomalies in the colouring of a Willie Wagtail and passed on the findings to an ornithologist friend who published an article in a bird journal. Peter said his favourite times for photographing birdlife were sunrise and late afternoons. “I like it in the mornings when they are greeting the day and then later after they have been foraging for food,” he said. HEALTH

Stretch for success Words by Amy Anderson, group fitness instructor, Halcyon Landing Amy Anderson

S

tretching is vital for good posture. As we age, we tend to sit more, not on purpose – it is just what happens with lifestyle.

There is not a lot of standing time and activities such as reading and gardening also encourage leaning forward, which makes the muscles at the front of the body strong and tight, while the back needs to lengthen and stretch out. Through stretching, balance and movement, we can tone and strengthen the back muscles, which promotes 34

better posture, the ability to stand taller and reduce lower back pain. The weekly stretch class at Stockland’s Halcyon Landing in Bli Bli (QLD) moves through a beautiful, gentle flow that extends into the traditional yoga stretching poses. We focus on managing lower back pain and arthritis, which can be alleviated by stretching. There are also balance components throughout the class through grounding movements using the feet, which minimise the risk of falling. I love to encourage people to do more

than they believe they can do and get them out of their comfort zone by succeeding and benefiting from improvement every week. There is always something to work towards that is a bit more challenging whether that is balance, stretching or ability. People come into class looking very stiff and rounded and leave walking taller and moving more fluidly. I really enjoy my sessions with the homeowners at Stockland’s Halcyon Landing, it is such a safe, welcoming environment and definitely my happy place to be.

Amy Anderson

5 TIPS FOR MAINTAINING FLEXIBILITY 1. T o increase your balance, brush your teeth standing on one foot, or stand on one foot at a time while you are waiting for the kettle to boil. 2. A dd in incidental stretching throughout the day. Do a couple of sit-to-stand movements every time you get up from the couch. 3. I f you are constantly leaning forward to read or garden, open up your arms and chest by pressing your open arms against a wall and leaning in with a standing downward dog yoga movement. 4. T he supine stretch, where you twist around to look over and behind you, is another great back stretch to integrate into daily activity. 5. I f you are sitting down a lot during the day, try to stand and move around on the hour. Staying hydrated by drinking lots of water will keep you moving too! WINTER 2022 | 35
