Haleigh Daughtrey Virginia Tech / 2024 Interior Design Portfolio

ABOUT ME I am a fourth-year interior design student at Virginia Tech that strives to creatively design spaces for companies and their individual sets of needs. I have been passionate about interior design for most of my life, as I started telling people that’s what I wanted to be at age eleven. Through my years at Virginia Tech, that passion has only grown, alongside gaining a deeper understanding and appreciation of the field. Despite thinking I wanted to pursue residential design, my love for commercial and office design has become my focus. I am eager to gradually become a more self-aware, innovative, systematic, and simply radiant designer. Alongside interiors, I have other creatively driven interests such as photography, graphic design, and social media. I have found that these hobbies have aided my skill set as a designer, and only guide me to become stronger in my work.

Many share a goal of creating environments that foster connections and creativity.” (International Business Innovation Association)

R E S E A R C H T H AT L E A D T O H AV E N Haven came to be from researching the company, Adobe. Adobe’s slogan is “changing the world through digital experiences.” This company was selected as the tech start up featured within the space because it is has a deep connection to us as designers and what we strive to do; therefore, to have a better understanding of what Adobe and their values are, this thought map was created:

What do the Adobe Creek and Roanoke River (which the site is located near) have in common? - Havens. - Haven is defined as “a place of safety or refuge.” Connections? - The creek and river are havens for wildlife. - Adobe is a haven for creativity. - A community corresponds to the meaning of haven.

D E S I G N C O N C E P T STAT E M E N T The design of this space was heavily influenced by the tech start up selected, Adobe. As for implementing the concept of Haven through the space, motifs such as triangular shapes and angles were a large portion of display, which is in congruence with the fact that the Adobe logo is a loose triangular shape and traditional houses have that pitched, angular roof. Haven is defined as “a place of safety or refugee”; therefore, the space is meant to emit a feeling of comfort and promote productivity. That idea also ties into the ideal of co-working, as many individuals are coming to the office to have that separation of work and home, but that does not mean the office cannot provide a sense of amenity. This co-working environment challenges the rigidness and coolness of a typical office, and strives to promote wellness, productivity, and warmth as that aligns with its home base.

WAY S T H I S C O N C E P T I S S H OW C A S E D As one is looking through the project, there are certain elements that stick out as key points for displaying this Haven concept. These include but are not limited to: the herringbone floor (pattern is arranged as stacks of triangular pieces), angles within flooring changes and zones, furniture (both imported and custom) that reads the same and has slight rounded angles or geometric hints, walls that form angles throughout the floor plan, housing motifs seen in the phone booths and guest bench seating in entryway, a custom Adobe light fixture (seen in conference room), materials that implement geometric shapes, and lastly a muted, relaxing color palette.

The Tempe Campus is at the heart of Tempe, AZ, and the library is situated close to the center of campus, making it much like the heart of it’s university. The cafe is the heart of the design, for it provides a sense of liveliness to the library and acts as a social hub; a place where one comes to refresh or socialize. The rest of the design is a continuation or influence from the central hub. Circular forms are a big emphasis within the space, some almost picking up where the central form left off and radiating from there. There are contrasting warm and cool tones to emit a sense of comfort, yet productivity. The materials consist of primarily woods, metals, and a range of fabrics.

Sundry is defined as: including many things of different kinds; it’s a word that encompasses the way a library operates. Libraries provide a sense of inclusivity and diversity, it’s a place where people of various backgrounds come to learn and better themselves. The goal of the sundry library is to meet the needs of all those individuals that come into the space.

DESIGN CONCEPT Hive: “A place in which people are busily occupied.” Typically when you imagine a hive, you envision a colony of bees, which can be comparable to the community of students hard at work fully utilizing their physical capabilities. The CID Makerspace is a multifaceted space, sectioned into 3 zones; think, make, and share, while encouraging collaboration amongst various types of users. Hive is a term that encapsulates the true function of the space, for the classroom acts as a returning point for such makers that utilize the surrounding shops.

RESE ARCH & FINDINGS Our team conducted research on the existing space and found that a large issue within the space was due to poor furniture selectionthe stools were much taller than needed for given table height, so students were caused to sit in various uncomfortable positions.

POSTURE STUDY

Based on our overall research, we found three main problems to solve: Findings - The space and its programs go unnoticed and lack activity. - An absence of versatility in seating and work surfaces causing a single work mode, and resulting in poor posture. - Insufficient storage for tools, materials, and student projects. Solutions - A new program and three adaptable spaces; think, make, share, to invite students into the space. - Provide more seating and work surface options. Multimodal environment. - Additional storage in proposed work table, central storage unit, and wall storage.

PROGRAM COMP ONENT To make the space more accessible and user friendly the course, A Makers Mindset, was proposed to expose students to this space. All new CID residents must complete one program of the five, along with safety training. This includes a 3 week course on the specified topic.

PERSONAL ROLE ON THE TE AM

The space allows for flexibility with both remote and in-studio workers; for, within the classroom there are designated tech areas with monitors where students can zoom-in if need be.

I worked partially on material selection, as well as importing most items into the Revit model. I assisted with some design elements like the way finding path and incorporating thinkmake-share. I also illustrated the postures, for that’s my body mimicking the various shapes.

INTRODUCTION Off Beat Records aims to encourage creativity and uniqueness alike amongst current and emerging indie rock artists. It’s a place that recognizes and honors where you’ve been, where you are, and where you’re headed. Indie is a term meaning “independent”, which relates to peoples sense of self-identity and directly relates to how the genre startedindependent labels willing to take a chance on sounds created from a newer, yet nostalgic background. Artists who pair the driving rhythm from rock, and the infamous grit from indie, create a harmony that only those with open minds and ears can hear.

A few characteristics that attract Indie Rock culture: - Low Rent - Lots of Basements - Public Transportation

DESIGN CONCEPT The inspiration for this design stems from how many bands start, in a basement, garage, or simply a small place where there’s room for instruments. This proposed space provokes one to reflect on said past, stand in the present, and dream about the future- to honor where you’ve been, where you are, and where you’re headed. With that said, this space planning highlights design elements like interconnectivity and transitions, thinking about how paths cross while maintaining separate- much like our lives. The design pays homage to a garage with the open, yet distinct spaces and layering effect of materials and patterns; additionally, there is a custom ceiling element that mimics the movement of garage doors. Then there are overlapping, intersecting, and continuous elements seen throughout the space that further exemplify the idea of interconnectedness. This also plays into indie rock, for indie stems from independence, which follows the sayings “taking the path less traveled by” or “going off the beaten path”. So these paths throughout represent not only ones paths through life, but also individuality and not being afraid to go your own way.

C O N C E P T STAT E M E N T Thinking about generations in the workplace, the word “medley” comes to mind. This term is defined as “a varied mixture of people or things; a miscellany.” The workplace is now primarily comprised of Generation X and Millennials, with Generation Z slowly merging into the picture. The workplace is a medley of generations that bring different perspectives and skill sets to the table. This also relates to Steelcase’s + Next’s values, for the space would be a medley of their inclusive design principles and design practices.

PARTI DIAGRAM

D E S I G N STAT E M E N T Through the research conducted on a visual representation was created,

BABY BOOMERS = STRUCTURE

GEN X = BALANCE

generations in the workplace, which can be seen below.

MILLENNIAL = INDIVIDUALITY

GEN Z = MULTI- TASKING

Ideals from this were implemented into the space, along with a strong emphasis on materiality and color. There are four primary colors- green, pink, blue, and yellow -each one symbolizing a generation. Through pattern, geometry, and the blending of such colors, one starts to see the harmony that emerges within the workplace. All generations have different attributes that make them special, therefore making the workplace a medley.
