“The ER team at

Effingham Health System saved my daughter’s foot.

“My daughter Kaylan ripped off her toe and side of her foot playing on a pool slide. We took her to Effingham County Hospital ER because it was close. I didn’t realize the level of care that we would receive. We thought she was going to lose the side of her foot. But they took over, calmed us, assessed her injuries, then fixed her foot. She’s already back playing soccer. We have never been treated better at a hospital than at Effingham Health System.”

At Georgia Heritage Federal Credit Union, it’s all about you. And the Credit Union’s mission is, “Making a positive difference for our members and the communities we serve.” Vice President of Lending Billie Dees knows this is true. Georgia Heritage Federal Credit Union cares about its members and is committed to offering a variety of products and services— doing so with a friendly, personal touch. Billie has been in banking and lending for more than 20 years, the last 12 with Georgia Heritage Federal Credit Union. She knows that the culture at the Credit Union really is to focus on its members. There is a collective pride among the employees who serve its members each and every day. When you meet Billie, her passion for consumer lending and helping members is obvious. “We have products to fit almost every financial circumstance and it is so rewarding to be able to help someone buy their first home or get a second mortgage to pay for their child’s college. The culture here at the Credit Union gets in your blood. Georgia Heritage Federal Credit Union is owned by its members.” Billie says. When asked about what it was like being a professional woman coming up in her career, Billie Dees feels blessed to have had the opportunity to be in financial services at the start of her career. While it was a male dominated industry for many years, Billie moved up through the companies and strived to

earn the respect of her coworkers and the communities she served. This was very important to her, as was her willingness to learn new technologies and skills along the way. Her advice to other women is to “follow your passion, determine your purpose and then persevere.” Latrice Wright is a Mortgage and Home Equity Specialist at Georgia Heritage Federal Credit Union. She has been in the financial industry since 2006

and has been with Georgia Heritage since November 2020. She has remained in the industry because she loves people and lending a helping hand to those in her community. Latrice is proud to work for an organization like Georgia Heritage Federal Credit Union. “From growth opportunities to work life balance, they are very supportive of their employees,” she says. In turn, Latrice wants to give that same level of care and understanding to their members. Being a professional woman and a mom does have challenges. Latrice believes that women need to “stand in their success,” understand that we cannot strive to be perfectionists, learn to trust in our own voices, empower each other and not let our adversities define us—“your attitude determines your altitude.” She is very proud to be an example to her daughter as well—showing her that, with hard work and tenacity, women can be anything they desire. Georgia Heritage Federal Credit Union has served Savannah and surrounding communities for over 80 years. The Credit Union offers a variety of mortgage products through AmeriCU a division of Towne Mortgage and home equity products to meet your financial needs. If you’re thinking about buying a home this year, you need to call Latrice Wright today at (912)-629- 4319 or visit www. gaheritagefcu.org. Georgia Heritage Federal Credit Union is an Equal Housing Lender (NMLS ID# 446248).

Merriam-Webster defines the word “success” as “favorable outcome” and “one that succeeds.” Entrepreneurship gurus tell us we have to find what success means for us as individuals. Shifting from being an executive in the “corporate” world to now running my own business, I have had to dramatically change my personal definition of success. Success takes many forms. There is no one size fits all. Being a woman in business means defining success on our own terms. The number of womenJan Southern owned businesses has increased by roughly 60% in the past decade. This is something we can all be proud of, but it doesn’t minimize the challenges and obstacles we face as we balance our professional and personal lives in order to achieve our personal versions of success. In this issue we set out to celebrate all the women in the Greater Pooler area who work to build their businesses, build other women up and build our communities. Girl power is real! Now, these pages are all about women, but it would be unfair not to celebrate the men in our lives who can be our rocks, encouragers and sounding boards. They deserve a little recognition as well. Thank you, guys! More on that in a future issue. For now, let’s cheer each other on and read about some amazing girls on the following pages.

DEEDEE MORRIS: Building a Legacy in the Community Story by Cindy Reid | Photos by Tonya Perry

D

eeDee Morris has followed her love of hands-on healing from nursing to natural skin care. After a successful career as a Registered Nurse, she took her passion for creating hand crafted bath, body and skin care products and opened Ellen Claire Soapery. She recently added Mo’Southern, a locally sourced line of coffee, confections, and authentic Southern products. Born in Augusta, raised in Athens and Atlanta, DeeDee has called Effingham County home since the age of 16. Her time as a RN included teaching (CNA, PCT and CPR) as well as geriatric, cardiopulmonary and pediatric nursing. She was also a public school nurse for 19 years at Sand Hill Elementary School. She loved being a nurse and being involved with the community, but after retiring after 33 years in nursing, she says, “I was ready for something fun and creative.” Her hard work and innovation have resulted in a resounding success, making her a true “Woman in Business” role model. Pooler Magazine recently caught up with this busy lady and asked her how it all came about. What is a soapery? A soapery is very much like a bakery—it is where we actually make the soap. All of our products are made by hand in our boutique in small batches and are my own formulary. On many days, you can even watch as your bath products are made right there. Customers are excited to have a real brick and mortar store to come to, smell things and try our products in person. What appealed to you about the soapery business? As I nurse, I saw how important skin care was to your general good health. Your skin is your largest organ and can filter and absorb much of what you put on it. Commercial skincare products are filled with chemicals that are not meant for our body. What many people don’t realize—the old-fashioned process of soap making, with lye, oil, and butters is the only actual soap according to the FDA. If you look at commercial products packaging, you will see that what many consider soap is actually detergent. That’s why they are labelled “deodorant bar, beauty bar, cleansing bar.” I wanted to produce skin care products using natural ingredients, that were fun and fragrant, so you will feel good about what you’re using on your body. Do you find yourself continually learning new skills as an artisan? The biggest, and most important, lesson I learned was how to properly formulate my own recipes for my products. They are complex formulas and recipes that take experience and expertise to do correctly. Every oil has a different value and purpose in the formulas and must be balanced accordingly. On the fun side, I recently developed my soap piping skills! What do you enjoy the most about your businesses? I enjoy continually learning and making something new every day. This has been

such a creative outlet for me, and I am so happy my customers are enjoying it. I also genuinely enjoy our customers and getting to know them. Some want the same formula every time and others love trying something new. For some of my regular customers, I can just hear their voice and I know their favorite products. I’ve always been a very hands-on and personal nurse and I’ve applied those skills to my soaping career. What do enjoy the least? Dishes! I am always doing dishes because making skin care products makes a surprisingly large mess, but at least it’s usually easy cleaning. Are your products for the whole family? We have something for everyone. We carry a gentleman’s line, a children’s line, and even a “Posh Pooch” line for your furry family members. Can you personalize your products? Absolutely, we love custom orders! In addition to our standard level of customized orders, we offer personalized bath bombs as “Thank You” gifts and event favors. You can even order you own custom made breast milk soap (using your own breast milk). And for those with a nut allergy, we ensure their products are made in a completely nut free environment. Tell us about Mo’Southern. It is authentically Southern coffee, confections, candles and more. Think magnolias and honeysuckle, neighbors that wave, a cup of coffee and conversation at the kitchen table. What could be Mo’Southern? Our proprietary blend of coffee is smooth, not bitter, and is locally roasted in small batches. Our artisan confections are prepared locally, and we also have home décor, hand-made jewelry, apparel—all sorts of new items!

Do you have expansion plans? It has been a great journey so far. I am always optimistic, but even I was surprised to see how fast we have grown. We started in our own kitchen and now we are outgrowing our existing space. You can now find your favorite Ellen Claire and Mo’Southern items in many local stores—Ole’ Country in Guyton, Sunflower in Rincon, Molly Jane’s in Darien, B Renewed in Rincon and Guyton, Wright Wicks in Springfield. The list is ever growing! This summer we are planning to physically expand the store by building an additional 400 square feet. In two years, Ellen Claire Soapery and Mo’Southern will have a coffee shop bistro together, including a bakery that offers paninis, soups, and other light fare. We are growing all the time! Are you a family business? We’re a small family run business, so it really is from ‘Our family to your family.’ Right next door is my husband Bobby’s business, Hometown Auto Care. It’s fun seeing my husband at work every day. This has been our first opportunity to work together and we are enjoying it! Our daughter Katie Morris, Manager of Ellen Claire, works with me while attending college for nursing. Our niece Abby Morris is Assistant Manager and head of Graphics and Textiles. Our niece Amanda Lavin is Manager of Mo’Southern. Our son Scotty is a Software Engineer for Boeing in Jacksonville, Florida. We love being a family business! Do you have any advice for women who want to start their own business? I say go for it! The only thing holding you back is your own inhibitions and fear about to start something new. You might just surprise yourself with what you can accomplish! n

TRISHA COOK: The Trisha Cook Team, Keller Williams Realty

T

risha Cook has specialized in the Pooler real estate market for a solid of 14 years. She became licensed as a Realtor in 2007; she talks about that being the toughest time to get into real estate in recent memory, and she also attributes survival to her strong work ethic today, as well as successes. She loves to say, “those who survive in the weak markets thrive in the strong ones.” Trisha recalls, “it was a very tough time to be a real estate agent.” At the time she was a single Mom, living in “historic” Pooler, balancing a second job to make ends meet and get her business off of the ground. Toward the end of the first year, she took a leap of faith and quit the second job and hasn't looked backed. In 2020, her real estate team served 430 families and their real estate needs. Trisha says that being a woman in the real estate business in 2021 is such an opportunity. You are your only glass ceiling and your business truly grows to the extent that you do. There are no limitations on your growth in this sector because of your gender and there truly is a niche market for everyone to fall into, whether it be young moms, millennials, military spouses, professionals or 100 other potential ways that you can succeed. She is more than happy to help any woman through this journey, knowing they will reap the rewards of their efforts.

Trisha has been a member of the Greater Pooler Area Chamber of Commerce for many years. She served on the Ambassador Council and has been on the Board of Directors for three years. Her business was awarded the Chamber’s 2019 Pooler Business of the Year. Trisha currently serves as the 2021 Vice President of the Board. In addition, she has helped start and serves on two Pooler based Business Networking International (BNI) chapters. Other ways she and her team have chosen to serve the City of Pooler through the years include starting the “It’s Cooler in Pooler” community page to keep the community “in the know” about everything going on in Pooler. That page has grown to over 30,000 followers since 2009. What Makes Her Team Unique The Promise: Trisha and her team pride themselves on always finding innovative ways to add value to their clients. In 2020, they implemented something they call “The Promise.” This is their promise to you that they are going to give the highest level of service at all times and will do everything they can to anticipate your needs more than you do. “We want to remain proactive instead of reactive and to provide value at every turn.” VIP Program: Trisha’s team has developed a very unique client VIP program that supports over 100 local businesses while also continuously giving back to their TCT clients for an amazing win/win for all involved. The program is free to participate.

Moving Truck: They have a moving truck to offer her clients and local charities, churches and schools as a free service. Free Events: On a normal Covid-free year, the team hosts everything from a Christmas fest with free Santa pictures, ice cream and vendors to a free Pie Day on Thanksgiving for her clients. Charitable Giving: She and her team also give back a portion of every closing commission to a local Pooler-based charity, Gillard & Company, who advocates for independent living assistance for young adults fresh out of the foster care system. They also give back a portion of their commission to those who serve our community as their way to say thank you for their services, from police officers and nurses to firefighters, military and teachers. During her free time, Trisha enjoys spending time with her family and on the water. Eleven years ago, she reconnected with a high school friend, Allen Hayes, and they have been married since then. They have 3 grown children, 2 rescue dogs and one adorable grandson. Allen is also a Realtor now and they work together on the team. Trisha has chosen to keep her business right here in Pooler. Why? “Pooler has been at the center of epic growth and watching this since I bought my first home here in 1999 has been nothing short of amazing. If I can be even a small part of shaping that, I’m all in.” n

A Mother’s Journey to Acceptance

H

e’s Not Broken: A Mother’s Journey to Acceptance is an emotional account of Ginger McGee’s journey through her son’s diagnosis of severe Tourette’s (TS) at six years old, followed by severe OCD at eight. “Suddenly, I found myself in a foreign land. And all the stories I had told myself about how motherhood was going to be were no longer viable. I was in unchartered territory and I needed a guide map.” She soon discovered that there were no maps for her journey. Most of the books related to her son’s diagnoses were either clinical in nature and gave her no personal comfort or were written from the perspective of the person diagnosed. “When your child is diagnosed with something, anything, it’s life altering— not what you expected. No one talks about the unwanted, unmotherly feelings like disappointment, resentment toward families with “normal” children, and grief for the loss of the life you expected for you and your child.” Those uncomfortable emotions led McGee to begin writing about them on her then-blog, Moxie Momma. “I was completely transparent about how I was feeling, despite the voice inside my head telling me that I was a bad mother, and that others would judge me. But the more I wrote, the more mothers—both those with special needs kids and those with neurotypical kids—reached out to me. Many of them were going through some of the same emotions. Readers said that my writing made them feel less alone. And connecting with them made me feel less alone.” One reader, Allissa, commented, “Her blog posts gave me hope that life would still have smiles and laughter. I had found a lifeline. Her words grounded me. I (was) so very thankful for her words to guide me through when I was lost.” “I realized that these parents needed the same validation that I had been searching for—a been-there-done-that friend,” adds McGee. “And I thought if I took my writing further and created that guide map that I had been looking for, I could be that beenthere-done-that friend for those parents.”

McGee admits that writing He’s Not Broken was one of the hardest things she’s ever done. “I relived every difficult moment, felt every emotion all over again, and sometimes, it was just too much.” Although her son is now 23, and his tics have been dormant since he turned 15, McGee says she had no trouble seeing him as that six-year-old boy battling those invisible bullies. She describes one moment in particular: “One day I saw him sitting on the couch, tears running down his cheeks while he watched SpongeBob. Looking

“What if your special needs child turns out to be the special child you didn’t know you needed?” closer I could see him stretching his jaw repeatedly as wide as he could. At one point he placed his entire fist in his mouth. The sides of his mouth were cracked and raw. I knew from experience not to interrupt, or he would have to start all over again, because his TS was fueled by his OCD—typically he would have to do a tic a certain number of times before he could stop and wait for the next wave that would inevitably be close behind.”

Thanks to the media who often portray TS as the cursing disease, or the butt of a joke, it is hugely misunderstood. in fact, coprolalia—the cursing tic—affects less than 10% of the TS population. “Sadly, my own understanding of TS was largely from a documentary that highlighted coprolalia, leading me to believe that everyone who has TS yells obscenities,” She confesses. “And to many people that’s funny. I am ashamed to admit that even I laughed. I had no idea how disruptive TS was, or how it affected a person’s quality of life until I witnesses the affects it had on my son.” “Having a son with TS has shown me that the pain it causes is far reaching—mental, emotional, and physical at times. Imagine watching your six-year-old stick his finger down his throat repeatedly, causing him to throw up several times throughout the day, touching the inside of his eye until it’s bloodied, or punching himself in the stomach until its bruised. Physical pain—that’s the reality of TS for many.” “When Jake was much younger, we did a series of videos on YouTube about TS in the hopes of dispelling some of the stereotypes. People are more accepting of things they understand. That’s why education is key. It’s my hope that He’s Not Broken will serve to educate an even wider audience, as well as give other parents some incentive to teach others about their own struggles. Education breeds understanding which leads to compassion.” Ultimately, He’s Not Broken is a heartwarming story of motherhood told with rare honesty that delivers a message of hope to all parents in need of emotional support, and a reminder that they are not alone. You can buy your copy on Amazon or BarnesandNoble. com, or ask your local bookstore. n

hitney Gilliard is providing a lifeline to young adults who need it the most. Whitney Gilliard’s company G&Co. has established the Independent Living Program (ILP) which provides transitional housing for kids who have turned 18 years old and are no longer served by foster care. ILP—located in Savannah—has the capacity for 16 young adults who go through the screening and evaluation process and are able to make commitments to work and school while being involved with the program. Whitney says “ILP stemmed from my own experience of aging out of foster care at 21. I know firsthand how unforgiving the world can be. ILP exists because I wanted to make sure that others were not treated the way I was treated.” After being in foster care herself, Whitney says working from within the system has shown her that, “There really are two sides to the story, and now that I see how much red tape there is, I try to find ways to take it off.” She says she has also learned, “There are many helpers out there trying to help the kids who don’t have a voice.” As a CEO who is also a working case manager at G&Co., Whitney says, “Being successful depends on having teammates who know more than you do and being able to access that information. I love my staff and our Board of Directors because they complete our organization.” She says, “Diversity, from the staff to the board, strengthens our organization and provides visible role models to the young people we serve. We are much more formidable in our diversity.” Whitney says her life, from being a foster care youth to being the CEO of her own non-profit, has been an incredible journey. She says, “It’s hard to believe sometimes that I am in business. As a little girl growing up, I never thought I would even talk to someone in business, and I certainly never thought I would be a part of this circle. “When asked for advice she says it’s pretty simple: “Don’t act when angry, don’t promise when happy, and don’t make decisions when you are sad.” n

WHITNEY GILLIARD: CEO of G&Co. PROGRAMS AT G&CO. In addition to the Independent Living Program, G&Co. manages other programs to assist at-risk children and families, including: Permanency Mentor - Lifelong mentors work with the young adults to provide life skills support. HavINN Trauma Intervention Room - a warm safe room—instead of an office space—where a volunteer will sit with and help supervise a child while placement is found. With Love Project - developed through Whitney’s personal experience as one of the teens in foster care who depended on the community for the meaning of Christmas, G&Co works with the community to fulfill Christmas wishes for all children in our local Division of Family and Child Services (DFACS). LATRICIA BROWN: A Woman in Charge of Her Dreams

I

n the business world, there is a low percentage of womenowned businesses. Among that low percentage of women, African American women make up even a smaller share. The first year of owning and running a business can be the hardest, and it is during that first year that many businesses fail. There are many black-owned businesses that do not make it to the one year mark. Latricia Brown is an African American woman who has shown the world it is possible to own a successful black-owned business. Brown is a young businesswoman from Mobile, Alabama. She received her Bachelor’s degree from Savannah College of Art and Design in Fashion, and now she is the owner and fashion director of Trish B Stylin in Pooler. Trish B Stylin offers bridal alterations, custom gowns and suits, and fashion directing services. Brown’s mission is to deliver consistently fabulous work and to help her clients express their creativity. Every man and woman has a sprinkle of creativity within them, and Brown helps her clients realize that and bring it to life. Brown has been interested in fashion since she was a little girl, but her father would not allow her to show her creativity through her clothes. Instead, he told her that when she makes it in the world she could wear whatever she liked. Brown took what her father told her and ran with it. She began to show her creativity through her fashion style just like her father told her to do. Where does her inspiration come from? Brown’s inspiration comes from other creators and even nature. Looking at art from other creators can spark an idea in her that she did not have before, and the same can be done by looking at nature. That spark can turn into her next big idea. Over the last few years, Brown has been able to create many big ideas. Being a business owner can be difficult for various reasons, but being a Black business owner can be harder. “Being a Black fashion creator can be difficult since there are some businesses that are not as open to African American women,” says Brown.

In the bridal industry, Brown says that they can restrict you from being yourself when creating fashion. They may make you feel as if you are trapped in a box and try to mold you into what they want you to be. There may be some barriers within the business world, but they are not impossible to get passed, as Brown has shown through the success of her business. Brown is a woman who any young businesswoman would be lucky to look up to, and she has a few pieces of advice for young women wanting to start their own businesses: • Do not be afraid to reach out to other businesswomen. • Remember that so much can be learned from other businesswomen. • Be willing to ask for help. If you are thinking about starting your own business stop thinking about it and do it. Become the woman in charge you were meant to be! n

POOLER COUNCILWOMEN: Women with a City’s Interest at Heart

P

ooler City Council is responsible for the city’s policymaking. Mayor Rebecca Benton, Pooler’s first female mayor, represents the city (alongside City Manager Robbie Byrd). She heads the council, assuring members “cohesively work together to meet resident’s needs.” The mayor appreciates the council, including the city’s two councilwomen, which strives to make decisions in the city’s best interest: Councilwoman Shannon Black Councilwoman Shannon Black has called Pooler home for many years. Shannon is a mother of two. Her daughter Josie is a college student while her son Zach has served as a U.S. Marine for nearly four years. Shannon was elected to the council in 2010 after attending many city council meetings and hearing citizens’ concerns. “I was really happy. It was never about politics for me. I wanted to do

something for my community. This has been my heart. I’m a server… a worker bee…a doer. If Pooler needs me, I’m here,” she said. Shannon’s previous career was in commercial real estate. It has benefited her in her council role, as she well understands regulations surrounding growing commercial development. “I’ve seen both sides of the coin; I’ve been on the council, but I’ve also stood in front of it,” she said. Shannon enjoys being a good listener, gaining knowledge to properly assist citizens. “I want to hear and get the right information out,” she stated. Under the guidance of City Manager Robbie Byrd, Shannon presides over the Parks and Recreation Committee. “Our city manager has been an asset and a great leader with a vision,” she said. Councilwoman Karen Williams Councilwoman Karen Williams has been in Pooler for over five years alongside her husband of 40 years Thomas Charles “TC” Willams. The couple has two daughters and two grandchildren; four familial generations reside in Pooler.

Karen began her term in January 2020, having a heart for service. “I discovered early in life that I have a service-oriented heart. Serving the citizens of Pooler makes me happy. I think the diversity of the council fosters creativity and innovative ideas,” she said. Prior to joining the council, Karen was a resident advocate, assisting businesses and residents. “I treat them as family. I pray for them. I care about them. I use compassion to listen and communicate,” she said. Karen is dedicated to making good decisions for the growing city. “I think growth is wonderful…smart growth. We should be proactive versus reactive. I believe infrastructure should meet the needs of growth,” she stated. Moreover, Karen advocates for children in the community, supporting good decisions being made concerning their education. “Schools are important to me. I believe we need more community schools. I’m involved in working with the school board. As our children grow, we need a place for them…safe, innovative schools that will nurture them into being future leaders. Children are the future,” she said. Karen is a member of The Church of Godley Station along with The Garden Club of Pooler and Pooler Lions Club. She loves spending time with her family…her “true hobby.” n

PAM SOUTHARD: Letting Pooler Shine

P

am Southard is the executive director for the Greater Pooler Area Chamber of Commerce & Visitors Bureau, Inc. (the chamber), which focuses largely on tourism and adding overall value to the community. Pam started with the chamber about 12 years ago, when it was known as the Pooler Chamber of Commerce and Visitors Bureau, Inc. “That speaks to the growth of Pooler and the chamber. When I started with the chamber, there were 90 members; now, there are over 400 members,” she said. “We’ve come a long way.” After about two successful years as the assistant director, along with a noteworthy resume, Pam was offered the position of executive director when the original director stepped down. “I was so honored to be asked to serve as the executive director. I had a vision [involving] growth of membership, working with a tremendous board of directors, and starting an ambassador council. That all fell into place. Here I am 10 years later, and there isn’t anything about my job that I don’t enjoy. I’m dedicated to good leadership, giving the community and tourists the opportunity to enjoy Pooler at its finest,” she stated. Pam is proud of the entire team that she works alongside, as nothing is accomplished without their commitment and diligence. “Without the staff that I have, plus the support of the ambassador council and board of directors, none of this would ever happen. They’re an amazing group of people,” she said. In addition, Pam has the utmost appreciation for Pooler’s finest—the first responders, giving of themselves each day for the betterment of the community. “We want to support our first responders. They don’t come any better than Chief Brown and Chief Simmons and their teams,” she said.

“We are Pooler proud, and that’s as it should be.” Proud of Her Community’s Growth Pam is proud of Pooler’s growth over the past decade. The Maryland native remembers moving to the area about 14 years ago and having to commute to Savannah for nearly everything. Pooler is now booming with restaurants, hotels, retail stores, entertainment venues, and small businesses. “We are a place to eat, shop, play, and stay,” she said. As tourism itself is continuously increasing, many residents are excited about future growth and commerce while also appreciating a nice, comfortable place to call home. “It may take a couple of years, but everybody will have the best of both worlds…more restaurants and stores and more of a historic community on Highway 80,” she commented. Pam is anxious to get back to normal in order to welcome back events like Patriot Weekend, the Christmas Tree Lighting Festival, and food truck

festivals, along with heartfelt events, including the Hearts for Healers Gala. “After COVID passes, we can start planning events. Moving forward, there’s so many events we can do for the residents, businesses, and visitors in Pooler,” Pam said. In her spare time, Pam most loves spending time at home with her husband. And yes, “Pooler is home.” n

HEATHER HUBBARD

Helping Women Feel and Look Beautiful

D

eka Lash Pooler Studio owner Heather Hubbard says, “I was in aviation and had traveled the world but was ready for a change. I am passionate about the beauty business and wanted to get into it in some way, so I reached out to Deka Lash because I really loved the concept and I personally have eyelash extensions incorporated into my beauty routine.” Deka Lash is a beauty company that specializes in eyelash extension services and products with the goal of making you look and feel your best. Through innovative product technology and a love of creativity, they have created lash services and customizations designed to enhance your already beautiful eyes and to simplify your beauty routine. Eyelash extensions are applied to your natural lashes to enhance the appearance of eyelash length, curl, and density. Lightweight and made from a high-quality synthetic blend, they are either one singular lash or a fan of lashes. The eyelash extensions come in a wide variety of lengths, curls, and fans. Customization options are endless! “My studio is entirely devoted to Deka Lash services and products. It’s a luxurious environment with six customized beds for the client’s comfort and relaxation. All the lash artists are trained to the Deka standards and every client is served only by Deka Lash Artists,” says Heather. “Our lashes are handmade, animal crueltyfree, and lightweight, nothing like the old fashioned strips. We help our clients enhance their beauty by offering both natural looking and dramatic looking

services without harming your lashes in any way.” The Studio offers several types of extensions, TrueXpress, Classic, Hybrid, and TrueVolume. Heather says, “Our newest lash application method, TrueXpress, creates full lashes in half the time of traditional services, without sacrificing quality.” The initial visit of applying a full set of lash extensions can be done in two hours or less. They recommend a return visit in 2-3 weeks to keep your enhanced lashes looking full, and this visit is half the time of the initial—30 minutes to an hour. “When our clients leave after receiving their first full set of extensions, they are thrilled how fresh and youthful they look,” says Healther. To complete the look, Deka Lash Pooler also offers lash lifts, lash tinting, eyebrow lamination, eyebrow tinting and eyebrow waxing. Heather says going into business for herself “was scary, especially with the pandemic as we were starting, but I have found that women support each other tremendously. Many local businesswomen have become our clients. Deka Lash Studios are the next step in beauty, and I am thrilled to bring it to Pooler first. Helping women feel and look beautiful is a very rewarding business!” Deka Lash Pooler’s studio and services are the perfect addition to any beauty routine. Walk-ins welcome but appointments are encouraged as availability is limited to help maintain social distancing. n

Port City Animal Hospital Welcomes Associate Veterinarian Dr. Abby Claytor

P

ort City Animal Hospital is excited to announce that Dr. Abby Claytor has joined their team as an Associate Veterinarian! Dr. Claytor grew up in Columbia, South Carolina, as the youngest of four girls. She was raised with an eye on adventure and was taught to love all creatures. Whether helping with an injured wild bird or a neighbor’s hurt pet, Dr. Claytor has loved animals since she was a young girl. She cannot remember a time when her heart was not set on becoming a veterinarian. Dr. Claytor earned her undergraduate degree from Clemson University and then attended veterinary school at Auburn University, where she graduated in 2020. After graduation, Abby chose to practice in the low country and moved to Savannah. The most important parts of Abby’s home are her two Labradors Harper and Rose, who are her heart. She continues to enjoy outdoor activities and loves living close to the beach. Her newest passion is DIY projects around the house as she gets great satisfaction from fixing and creating things herself. In a field once dominated by men, the veterinary profession has shifted in the last few decades, now employing more women than ever. In fact, Dr. Claytor’s graduating class had 108 women and just 12 men. Though some prejudice still exists, and there are instances of salary disparities within the veterinary industry, Dr. Claytor has not allowed these potential barriers to keep her from accomplishing her dreams. Dr. Claytor has found a practice she truly loves at Port City Animal Hospital. She and owner Dr. Jeremy Faris create an “all are family” culture. The staff know each other’s family members and treat each other as such. This same culture is taken into the exam room where they treat each client and patient as if they too are family. This extra care and attention is apparent on your very first visit. They have very loyal clients, one of whom drives four and a half hours just to see Dr. Faris because, well, there is no one like him! Port City Animal Hospital is a Fear-Free certified veterinary hospital. They employ methods that help animals feel safe and comfortable while in the hospital, a practice that has become ever more challenging during the pandemic. Dr. Claytor says, “we are not going to force your pets to do anything they don’t want to do. We take great care to alleviate your pets fear, anxiety and stress as well as your own.” This certification ensures a healthy environment and one that pets and owners alike are eager to come back to. What’s not to love about that! Port City Animal Hospital has built a reputation as a first-class veterinary hospital near Pooler offering full service care for the pets we love. If you would like to know more about Dr. Claytor and Port City Animal Hospital, feel free to call them at 912-525-0255, or you can (912) 525-0255 find them on the PetDesk app on www.portcitypets.com your smartphone.

Integrity, Honesty, and Compassion BENCHMARK PHYSICAL THERAPY POOLER BenchMark Physical Therapy, located in Pooler, GA is a leading outpatient physical therapy clinic with convenient scheduling, patient-focused care, and personalized treatment plans. They are committed to treating each patient promptly with integrity, honesty, and compassion. The location opened in 2016, and Clinic Director Katherine Osborne, PT, DPT, CLT joined in 2017. “It’s been going very well, and we were able to stay open and stay busy throughout the last year despite the pandemic.” Dr. Osborne grew up in Brooklet, GA, and says she loves working with her hometown community. She says “I became a Physical Therapist because it is one of the few medical specialties that is completely ‘hands on,’ which means I am able to build a rapport— and have a special relationship—with my patients. Being a Physical Therapist puts me in a position to help people feel better and restore better functioning in a one-on-one environment.” What is PT? Physical therapy is a method of treatment for certain physical impairments, disabilities, and injuries. Physical therapists are highly-educated, licensed health care professionals who may help patients reduce pain and improve or re-store mobility, in many cases without expensive surgery. At BenchMark Physical Therapy, expect a thorough evaluation and a plan of treatment for your specific diagnosis. Most courses of treatments run 12 to 14 visits, often several times a week. Most commonly treated are back pain, neck pain, injured workers, accident victims and postoperative (such as knee or hip replacement) patients. Dr. Osborne is also a certified therapist for Lymphedema Management, and has a background in pediatric PT. She is joined in the clinic by Michael Giamanco, PT, DPT, CSCS.

Dr. Osborne urges people in pain to give physical therapy a chance. “We can work towards pain reduction, reducing or eliminating the need for prescription pain medication. The ‘no pain no gain’ idea is completely false! Therapy doesn’t need to be painful.” In addition, they work with individuals to develop fitness and wellness programs for healthier and more active lifestyles. Patient First BenchMark Physical Therapy offers in-clinic and telehealth physical therapy evaluations and visits. A complimentary screen can provide you with valuable recommendations. They are committed to designing the best course of treatment and are happy to arrange telehealth options. Through telehealth, you are able to connect with your therapist more frequently to ask questions and review home exercises which empowers you to take a more active approach to your care. And good news- Medicare covers physical therapy. They work with most major insurance providers and do their best to help you keep the paperwork pain-free. If you’d like to confirm your insurance coverage, please let them know and they can verify when you schedule. If you don’t have a referral, don’t worry, they will work with your physician to obtain one. Get ready to feel better—call BenchMark Physical Therapy today! COVID-19 UPDATE Offering in-clinic and telehealth physical therapy evaluations and visits. Our clinic is Clean, Safe & Ready.

APRIL BURRISS

Vice President for VIP Office When an employee works for a company for almost three decades, it is safe to assume that company is a good company to work for. And when an employee consistently moves up the ranks in that company, you can assume that person is a good employee as well. April Burriss and VIP Office make a good combination. April has been with VIP for 27 years. She started there while in college doing various tasks for the owner, filling in where needed and eventually moving up to Vice President of the company. This mother of 3 credits her success to a strong work ethic and recognizing that nothing is handed to you. “You have to go out and get it done,” she says. This is advice she would give to recent graduates looking for success in their careers. Hard work and being willing to do whatever it takes for the company is how April serves at VIP Office each and every day. VIP Office feels the same about their employees and customers. They treat everyone like family or a close friend. While customers have the option of purchasing from big box stores or online from a company out of state, VIP Office provides exceptional online options but from their locations in Pooler and Hinesville. It is easy to get the products you need with just a quick call to VIP. April Burriss is proud to work for a womenowned small business. She is proud of the exceptional customer service VIP Office provides to its customers—a service she has contributed to for more than 27 years.

BELLA SALON Making the Cut Sharon Lucas embarked on her cosmetology career after raising a family. Now she’s taming hair in Pooler. The salon offers full-service hair care for all ages and hair types—including cuts, styles, color, locs, and perms to name a few. Bella Salon and Spa also offers manicures and pedicures and services for special events including hair styles and makeup. Lucas strives to keep a healthy environment for everyone. As a cancer survivor, she emphasizes the use of products that are naturally based, noting chemicals and carcinogenic properties found in many of the brands common today. In response to the current pandemic, which resulted in an almost two month shut down in 2020 for the salon, Lucas is stringent about following the Georgia State Board of Cosmetology guidelines, including mask-wearing for all clients and staff, temperature checks, cleaning between clients and regular deep cleaning and sanitizing. Lucas began her cosmetology career working as a receptionist at a salon in Savannah. A month later she became part of an apprenticeship program to receive her training and licensing. In 2007, she transitioned to a salon in Pooler at the suggestion of a friend. A few months later, Lucas had the opportunity to open her own salon in the same location. After remodeling the space, she opened the doors of Bella Salon and Spa to welcome the growing community in Pooler. Through the variety of services offered and the clientele they serve, Lucas said her staff is able to work together in a diverse and cohesive environment, bridging the gap in cultural understanding. “It’s a diverse salon where people can have their hair and nails done,” Lucas said. Lucas is happy to have been blessed with such an opportunity to serve the community. “I’m the kind of person who likes to help people,” she said. “Along with helping my staff grow, I have the ability to help people feel good about themselves.”

Silence might be golden, but hearing remains one of the most important senses in life. Helen Keller, who was deaf and blind, said “Blindness cuts us off from things, but deafness cuts us off from people.” Audiology and Hearing Aid Services (AHAS) is helping patients make that people-centered connection in Pooler. Located in the Godley Station Professional Park, the office is one of three located in Chatham County—the other two being in Savannah and on Skidaway Island. AHAS offers a full range of audiological services including full hearing evaluations; looking at degree of hearing loss, lifestyle, expectations, budget, and communication needs in a complex environment. Evaluations are also offered for tinnitus, which is marked by ringing in the ears and affects some 50 million Americans. AHAS works in close conjunction with Ear, Nose, and Throat Associates of Savannah, they are located in the same building in Pooler; which allows for quick referrals, convenience and expert care in a number of related areas, providing access to a complete medical model. The business has been in Pooler since 2008. Due to

growth in the area, the practice quickly ran out of space and moved to its current location in 2015. Educating the public on the important of hearing is an integral part of the clinic’s mission. This includes holding seminars to encourage an active lifestyle and confidence in hearing. Along with focusing on the link between hearing loss and other health conditions. The pandemic showed how vital social interactions are and the importance of making sure you can effectively communicate with those important to you. The staff of AHAS includes five Audiologists who rotate among the three

locations. Drs. Casey Allen and Sara King are primary Pooler providers. Dr. Allen is a native of Savannah, GA, joining the practice in 2015 during her clinical rotations, while studying at University of Tennessee. Dr. Allen graduated from UT with Doctorate of Audiology 2017 and has since remained with the practice. Dr. King who grew up in Pittsburgh, PA, joined the practice in 2018, completing her residency with AHAS. Dr. King earned her Doctorate of Audiology from West Virginia University in 2019 and has also remained with the practice. Dr. Allen says “It is never too early to get a hearing test to establish a baseline to be able to have a good comparison down the road, when communication needs arise.” The Audiologists at AHAS welcome the opportunity to change the lives of the patients through communication solutions. Dr. King states “We want to better assist with the communication needs to keep the connection with our patient’s loved ones thriving.”

Simple Self-Care Tips You'll Love W

hen easing into a new year, many experts encourage more self-care. From paying more attention to your mental health to pampering yourself from head to toe, now is the perfect time to start showing yourself a little extra love. Make Time to Decompress The past year shows that every rose comes with thorns, like working from home or legitimately needing to shop online. Managing a work-home balance may be harder than ever and late deliveries can make those online orders a real headache. Add the challenge of staying healthy, less social interaction and worries about the economy, and stress is probably a constant in many lives. That’s why it’s important to take a step back and unwind. Lock yourself away for 30 minutes of quiet time so you can let those stress endorphins settle down. Read a book, listen to music, meditate or simply be, without interruptions or demands. Keep up Familiar Routines Even if you’re sticking closer to home, skipping your normal beauty routines can throw you off your game. Make it a point to get dressed and ready for a day as if you’re planning to be out and about. Looking your best can translate into feeling your best, and it means you’re ready for a surprise video call or a days-late delivery you weren’t expecting. Give Special Care to Your “Sole-Mates” They may not be at the top of your beauty regime, but your feet are the toughest, hardest-working part of your body.

Because they take you everywhere, when you show your feet the love they deserve, it shows, and can help you feel better literally from head to toe. Even if you’re not comfortable going back to the salon just yet, you don’t have to sacrifice self-care. For example, the Amope foot care line is easy to use at home so you can get long-lasting hydration and visible results. An option like the Pedi Perfect Electronic Foot File uses finely ground diamond crystals to smooth hard skin effortlessly, and you can wrap up your home pedicure with coconut oil-enriched PediMasks that leave your feet soft, smooth and nourished in just 20 minutes. Maintain Social Connections Contact with friends and family outside your home may look different than it has in the past, but nurturing those relationships can be an important aspect of self-care. Regular contact with loved ones, even if it’s just by text, phone or video, can help curb loneliness, reduce boredom and lift your spirits. Set Goals and Start Chasing Them If you feel like time is standing still, you’re not alone. However, setting goals and working toward them can help you feel more productive and accomplished. You may be surprised what you can achieve, from starting a new fitness routine or learning a new language to finally organizing an overrun closet. Put yourself at the center of your love story and find more ideas for satisfying self-care at amope.com.

WE DELIVER TO

PATRICIA MITCHELL: Making a Difference for Her Clients

P

atricia Mitchell has taken pride in helping individuals with their insurance needs for many years. She is co-owner of MAGIC Insurance Agency (MAGIC)—Mitchell’s Advisory Group Insurance Consultants. She has lived in Effingham since 2015, alongside her husband Gregory and their four children. Patricia was an educator for over 27 years. The MAGIC story began in 2008, following the death of Patricia’s grandmother Miss Otha Dean Picket, known to many as “Miss OC.”' After she passed, Patricia’s family received a surprisingly huge bill—$39,000—from the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services. Understanding that her grandmother was a Medicare recipient for years, Patricia was baffled. She worked hard to resolve the problem in order to honor her grandmother, an individual who helped shape her into the woman she is today: a woman of character with a strong work ethic. “I’m not afraid of hard work,” Patricia said. She was driven to ensure that her grandmother’s home and land were not compromised as a result of certain stipulations of the Medicaid Recovery Act. While dining out one evening, Patricia overheard a United Healthcare business executive speaking with his associates about Medicaid and Medicare. She mentioned her dilemma, and he advised her of the best action to take. Patricia was grateful, feeling that the opportune meeting was “all God’s design.” The executive discerned Patricia’s zeal and knew that she had a “unique connection and story;” he offered her a job as an agent. Over time and with a lot of work, the Medicare dilemma was resolved, yielding a $0 balance. Patricia earned her license, becoming one of United Healthcare’s top producers. Motivated to start her own company, she became a broker, and she soon created MAGIC. “We are blessed when we help clients find the insurance plan that best fits their needs and budgets,” Patricia stated. MAGIC’s mission involves “helping clients make informed decisions” regarding coverage options by “understanding a complex product, such as Medicare.” The agency handles other concerns, including “helping customers solve billing and network issues, filling out Medicaid forms, or completing Social Security applications.” That is not all—MAGIC is actually a mobile insurance business. “We have the only mobile, drive-thru insurance agency…there’s nothing like it!” Patricia commented. “God just opened up the floodgates of Heaven and poured us out a blessing.” The trailer is well-equipped to effectively meet customer needs. Customers stay in the comfort of their vehicles while conducting business. The mobile trailer can be taken to various venues. Patricia has been recognized as a “Platinum Producer'' by United Healthcare Medicare Solutions and “Front Runner” by Aetna Medicare. MAGIC has been acknowledged for its superior customer service and client retention rate. Having a sincere desire to help others, Patricia has long-embraced a beautiful Scripture for herself, both personally and professionally: “It is more blessed to give than to receive” (Holy Bible, King James Version, 2002, Acts 20:35). n

The Children’s Museum of Pooler is filled with excitement, discovery, moos, and laughter—the sounds of kids learning while having fun. Bella, the mechanical cow at the Grandma J’s Farm exhibit, is just one of many delightfully designed exhibits that engage the children, and their adults, throughout the large and bright space. Nestled in the Tanger Outlet Mall, Children’s Museum of Pooler (CMOP) gives parents the opportunity to both shop and interact in an enjoyable educational environment with their children. Family Business The idea for CMOP was born from one family’s experience with their own children. Crys Daniels, the director of education and outreach at the museum travels with one of her children for regular medical care. “Often while traveling, we would look for fun and educational places to go with the kids,” Crys says. After finding a few ‘hands on’ activity spaces, Crys decided to bring the concept to the Savannah area. She says, “I shared the idea with my family.” After her husband’s parents and other family members researched the idea, they were “enthusiastically on board.” Also essential to the operations of the Children’s Museum of Pooler, sister-in-law Beth Ferguson heads the Finance and Accounting office, and Janet Daniels (Beth’s mother and Crys’ mother-in-law) and her husband Robert are the Officers. Crys used her educational background as a teacher to design the space and the exhibits, which were built by the whole family. Even the youngest kids helped to contribute to the exhibits and other aspects of the space. In fact, local artist Morgan Webb depicts the family’s children in a mural that greets visitors as they enter the Musuem. “We are blessed to share the experience of opening and running the Musuem with our children,” says Crys. CMOP recently became a nonprofit entity. “This is very important because it allows us to take donations and receive grant funding, which in turn keeps our admission prices affordable while enabling us to continually improve and add to our exhibits.” Crys says they plan on adding traveling exhibits “so there is always something new at the CMOP.” Ongoing Exhibit Fun CMOP offers 11 engaging permanent exhibits for children from ages 0-10, including: • Gone Fishing • Grains of Sand • Discovery Center • Lil Sprouts Market • Up Up and Away • Grandma J’s Farm • Under Construction • Color & Light • Tot Spot • Young at Art • Lego Time They also offer weekly programs for a variety of interests and ages, including: • Tuesday Toddler Time • Acting Up • Artsy Smartsy • Random Acts of Science • STEM Saturdays • Move it and Shake it! Sensory Friendly Morning, where children with developmental disabilities can learn and play with relief from extra stimuli. CMOP also hosts children’s parties and field trips. Daily tickets and family membership programs are available, visit the website or call for further information. Crys, Beth, and Janet love what they do and what they are bringing to families. They believe it’s everyone’s job to help kids learn. “We hope parents can unplug, relax, and learn with their little ones while they are here. We really are proud to provide hands-on learning opportunities and joyful discoveries for children and the community.”
