As the final curtain draws ever closer on the summer’s transfer activity – who will take centre stage in what promises to be an absorbing first North London derby of the season? t seems only fitting that the first derby of the season takes place on the eve of transfer deadline day. Both Arsenal and Spurs have been synonymous with the gossip columns of newspapers and websites across the world this summer but in strikingly contrasting circumstances. The Bale situation has dragged on so long that rumours have been rife of a Peter Jackson-directed adaptation for the silver screen, although at the time of writing things seem to be reaching a climax for Spurs’ golden boy. Indeed, it’s been a familiar tale in North London over the past few seasons with echoes of Fabregas, Nasri, van Persie and Modric – stars of the show moving on to new, more challenging roles. However, this time around there’s a difference - Spurs
I
are signing; strengthening their cast even despite the imminent absence of their undisputed protagonist. Arsenal, on the other hand, are not. With the new stadium ‘paid off’, a huge Puma deal in place and over twenty players off the wage bill it seemed this was Wenger’s cue to splash the cash and rebuild a team that could finally challenge the big guns once more. Yet with only one recognised signing to date, the free transfer of Yaya Sanogo from AJ Auxerre, it looks as well the red part of London may not sleep too soundly once Jim White loosens his now famed yellow tie when the clocks strike twelve on Monday night. It all sets up a fascinating context for the match itself with Spurs bringing arguably their strongestever squad to Arsenal in the Premier
League era, helping to further bridge an evident gap between the two sides within the same period. Indeed, gleeful Gooners are quick to remind us that it’s now eighteen St. Totteringham’s Days in a row. For the whole of the footballing public, Arsenal vs Spurs is a date that half an eye is kept out for when the fixtures are released in June, helped in no small part by the fact that it’s one of those games that rarely lets the neutral down. The last eight fixtures have garnered an astonishing 37 goals at an average of nearly 4.5 per game. It’s a historic rivalry stoked by politics as well as geography, and one that was first engulfed a century ago. It was 1913 when Arsenal moved from their original home in Woolwich to Highbury, four miles down the Seven

Sister’s Road from White Hart Lane, and naturally it was around this time that local passion came to the fore.
THE RIVALRY The enmity between the two teams escalated following World War I when, in 1919, the First Division was to be expanded by two clubs, by an election process conducted by the league’s existing members. Chelsea, having finished second-bottom of Division One, took the first of the spots with Spurs, who finished bottom, vying for the second with Barnsley, 3rd placed
finishers in Division Two, and five other clubs including good old Arsenal who had finished 6th. Through reported dodgy dealings by Arsenal chairman Sir Henry Norris and support from League President and Liverpool chairman John McKenna, Arsenal were sworn in amid outrage from their new neighbours. Before long, after Spurs had earned promotion, the North London derby was alive and very much kicking once more as some ferocious encounters ensured– not least in 1922 in a game that saw the FA flirt with the idea of playing the

next game between the sides behind closed doors! With both sides rarely vacating the top division the rivalry has remained strong, simmering only for a short time after World War Two when Arsenal had to play their home games at the Lane for a short period, after Arsenal stadium had been as an Air Raid Precaution station and subsequently bombed by the Nazis. Since then only in the 1949/50 and 1977/78 seasons have the two clubs not been in the top flight together and there has been no shortage of classic encounters in that time. Arsenal have won the league twice at White Hart Lane, firstly on the final day of the 1970/71 season, as a late Ray Kennedy header secured the first half of a league and cup double. The Invincibles team of 2004 repeated

the feat with a 2-2 draw, with early goals from Vieira and Pires cancelled out by a Jamie Redknapp strike and Robbie Keane’s late penalty. The two sides have also met in six semi-finals; four in the League Cup, most recently Tottenham’s 5-1 demolition en route to cup glory against Chelsea in 2007. Arsenal won the other three and have the edge in the FA Cup as well, although arguably the most famous match came in 1993 at Wembley when a Paul Gascoigne-inspired Tottenham

At this early point in the season, the stakes may not seemingly be as high as in previous seasons but the stage is set for another captivating derby. Time will tell who will emerge as the hero or prove to be the villain of the piece? Let’s see how the plot unravels...

he Invincibles season of 2004 was made all the more memorable as Arsenal clinched the title at the home of their bitter rivals. The visitors raced into a two-goal lead following goals from Vieria and Pires, before being pegged back in the second half by Jamie Redknapp’s strike and a late Robbie Keane penalty – but the day belonged to the Gooners. It wasn’t the first time they won the title at White Hart Lane either, they did it in their double-winning season of 1971 too.

WE TALK TO TWO FANS AHEAD OF THE DERBY ABOUT THEIR RESPECTIVE CLUBS CHANCES
In the Arsenal corner, optimistic fan Ben Plum, and in the Spurs corner we talk to pragmatic Darren Alexander, co-chairman of the Tottenham Supporters Trust There’s no need to panic. Things went against us on day one but we’ve responded with three good wins since. I’d quite like to see us part company with a player on good terms for a change! If Bale’s contract comes to an end at Real when he’s 30, it’d be nice for him to consider a return to Spurs – and now that doesn’t seem too likely. It’s up front we need to prioritise – we definitely need a striker. Giroud’s playing really well but if he gets injured then we’re a bit screwed!
12
I think we’re still lacking a proper number 10 – a decent supply line to Soldado who, by the way, is a great player – he’s like Berbatov but with a bit of work rate! Spurs is always a massive big game but it’s pride above all. The Prem doesn’t matter on a day like this – it’s bigger recently with the race for fourth but there will be more important games for the league. We just want to win and we will, I’m sensing a 3-1!
I’ll be frustrated if we don’t sign anyone but I also don’t like the idea of rushing into signing someone like Cabaye and holding back Ramsey who has been like a new signing for us so far anyway. I think now we’re up there it means more to our fans now. We’re starting to go to the Emirates thinking we can get something, and if Townsend, Paulinho and a couple other can turn up we’ll give it a good go.
I’m happy with how we’ve bought – but imagine if we’d have done this last year? We’d have had all this quality and still had Bale in the side – we might be talking more confidently about pushing for the title.

TWO-ON-ONE:
LEE DIXOn & TEDDY SHERINGHAM Josh Modaberi and Danny Stone had a quick chat with two legends of North London about the state of their respective clubs, Arsenal & Spurs, as we look ahead to the big fixture at the Emirates today. HTW: Firstly, what have you made of the early stages of the Premier League so far? TS: Well the first day went pretty much according to plan didn’t itUnited won, Chelsea won, so did City, Spurs and Liverpool. The only real surprise was Arsenal losing at home to Aston Villa, but it was a nice surprise! LD: [Laughs] Yeah we couldn’t have got off to a worst start really and will be massively disappointed not to start strongly at home. Also, there’s a lot of pressure on Arsenal with how the transfers have gone. A lot of the brunt of the opening day went on Arsene’s shoulders, but he’s a great manager and will know what he has to put up with.
HTW: And Teddy, do you think Spurs can get back into the Top Four this season? TS: I think they have certainly planned for that, they brought in a new manager last season, have been spending big money on young, talented players but some top players as well. Maybe not the world’s best, rather the second run, but if AVB can knit them together then everybody will be expecting them to get in the Champions League this season. HTW: And, Lee, City started well but then lost last week. We’ve always wondered - who would you prefer to win the league out of City and Arsenal?
LD: I’d prefer Arsenal, I was born and bred a City fan and still am, but I always want Arsenal to win when they play each other – they’re in my blood now. I suppose it all means that it gives me extra reason to hate Man United! HTW: And what do you both make of the Gareth Bale transfer saga? TS: Real Madrid are one of those clubs that if they come calling and they are going to make you the world’s most expensive player, then I think Tottenham have to let him go. It’s not something that happens very often, Spurs will receive a world record transfer fee and it could elevate
Champions League expectations at White Hart Lane
A largely disappointing opening day for Arsenal

17
HTW: And how did you get on that day? LD: I think we won. [they did, 3-2 - Ed] TS: For me, I’d just moved from Forest in the first season of the Premiership. We did the double over Arsenal that season- won 1-0 at home and 3-1 away and I managed to get a goal at Highbury. That was special. At the time when I played for Tottenham, Arsenal were a bit better and stronger than us so it was always a massive game for Spurs. I didn’t win many North London derbies so it was always lovely when you beat them.
As his marker Martin Keown tried a few years later at Old Trafford, Teddy shows there’s no better place to practice Karate than on the football field
Gareth Bale onto another level. LD: I agree. I’d rather have the six players or whatever they’ve brought in, definitely, so it’s a good deal for Spurs. The fee is ridiculous, especially if Neymar is worth £50 million and Bale £100 million then that doesn’t quite add up for me! HTW: And so lads, what are your earliest memories of the derbies? LD: My first one was away at White
Hart Lane, in 1988/89 – the season we won the league. I was made well aware of the importance of the derby. I remember Paul Davis, David Rocastle and Michael Thomas virtually threatening me before the game to be sure I knew what it meant from a pride point of view, so I knew early how important it was. This is slightly diluted now with the foreigners and lack of pure North-Londoners in the sides but it lives in through the fans.
If Neymar is worth £50m and Bale £100m, that doesn’t quite add up for me! Lee Dixon 18
HTW: So what are your best memories of the derby? LD: So many! But probably two FA Cup semi-finals - 1993 when Tony Adams scored and another at Old Trafford when we absolutely battered them. I remember I was up against Sergei Rebrov who was playing left-wing for some reason and I had a decent game, didn’t give him a sniff. TS: That one at Highbury in ‘93, just anytime we won really was fantastic, it wasn’t very often. We had a lot of draws against Arsenal and on the odd occasion when we did win it was worth all the anxiety and frustration from the game before. HTW: And the worst? Lee, we were thinking the sending off?
TWO-ON-ONE
Dixon & Sheringham: Intense rivalry calmed only by the perennial peacemakers: Halftime Whistle
LD: I never got sent off! Oh wait, yeah I did... that same semi-final in 1993 – thanks for reminding me! No, I’m lucky as we’ve always done pretty well against Tottenham results-wise– bar the famous semi-final in 1991. That was the worst by far, when Gazza scored and we lost 3-1. TS: Too many! Next question! HTW: And finally, what is your prediction for the match? LD: A massive game- bearing in mind what they’ve done in the transfer window, and where they’re at. I think there will be a lot of pressure on both managers, more so on Arsenal. Spurs have done their business early and bought well but then Wenger may say Arsenal didn’t need to strengthen as much! But no real idea what the score’s going to be. People often ask me and I have to remind them I’m not a mind-reader! TS: Both squads will have near enough finished their summer transfer dealings, does that mean Arsenal would have spent anything, who
Sacré bleu: Dixon’s Predators get tangled in Ginola’s luscious locks
knows? But you would expect them to go out and make one or two signings before the deadline and that would obviously bolster them before the Tottenham game. I think Spurs would take a draw away at the Emirates, I would be delighted if Tottenham could go there get a point.

To put this into context, Gedion tweeted this week at having successfully passed his GCSEs and at the time of his birth, Ryan Giggs was en route to his fourth league title! Pritchard, a scorer in midweek for his loan side Swindon at QPR, has impressed since moving to Spurs from West Ham as a sixteen-year-old in 2009. Since then, the attacking midfielder has been

impressing with his dribbling, expert crossing, and deadly set-pieces. The sheer volume of competition may prove an obstacle for Pritchard, who is already 20 years old but, having been shown enough faith to sign a two-and-a-half-year contract in January, if he can impress on loan, a chance may crop up for Pritchard to flex his first-team muscle sometime in the future.

ROHAN RICKETTS 30 years old, eight countries, both North London clubs, one unique career! s the North London derby enters its 100th year, there are still only very few players who can lay claim to donning the shirts of both Arsenal and Tottenham Hotspur. Indeed, there are even fewer who can boast a professional playing career that has spanned eight different countries across the globe, while still at the tender age of just 30. On derby day, what better time for Halftime Whistle to enter the weird and wonderful world of one such example. Step forward, Rohan Ricketts...
A
22
It’s a name you will probably recall. At the turn of the Millenium Ricketts, the diminutive attacking midfielder, was earning a reputation in the Arsenal academy, the team he joined as a teenager. He lifted the FA Youth Cup in both 2000 and 2001 in sides that also featured the likes of Jermaine Pennant, Jay Bothroyd and Steve Sidwell in its ranks. However, after only two first team appearances for the Gunners, Ricketts became only the fourth man in history to directly cross the North London divide and sign for Spurs, which he did in 2002.
Signed by Glenn Hoddle, he began to produce some impressive form at White Hart Lane, playing regularly for the first team in the 2003/04 season, as well as the under-21s. But by the following season, first-team appearances had become harder to come by and he was shipped out on loan - first to Coventry and then Wolves, to whom he made a permanent switch in 2005, reuniting with manager Hoddle.
THE JOURNEY BEGINS After a couple of seasons, Ricketts
In Hungary I had three different coaches in three months and they never started me! then moved north to Barnsley before moving slightly further afield, jetting off to North America in the form of MLS side Toronto FC. There he soon installed himself as a fans’ favourite, and this seemed to wet his appetite for life overseas as, after a roundly positive couple of seasons in Canada, Ricketts went on to Hungary and then Moldova. Speaking of his time on the continent, he said: “In Moldova I played for three months with no salary - the case is still with FIFA but I’m hoping it’ll be resolved soon. In Hungary I had three different coaches in three months and they never even started me. I was supposed to be the big signing from abroad and they still didn’t give me a go even though we’d lost something like nine games in a
row! It was a nightmare.” Undeterred, Ricketts then had a six month stint at German side SV Wilhelmshaven and the following season, he came ever so close to a move back to England – by signing for Shamrock Rovers of Ireland! He played for the club for just four months but won the League of Ireland Premier Division in that time. A brief spell at Exeter City followed before he would leave Europe for a second time...this time to India!
AU REVOIR EUROPE Signing for defending I-League champions Dempo of Goa, Ricketts explained some interesting cultural differences that he had to get accustomed to: “It gets so hot there Ricketts (Toronto FC) and former Arsenal legend Freddie Ljungberg (Seattle Sounders) .
Ricketts appeared for both Arsenal and Spurs
that we were doing all our training sessions and practice matches early in the morning before it got too unbearable [...] I was late on a couple of occasions due to cows in the road which was certainly something I had not experienced before!” Before long he was on the move again, this time to Ecuador, the country he now calls home, although rumours are rife online that his contract has been terminated. Either way, you can expect the nomadic Londoner won’t be in any rush to come back to England, especially not with strong offers on the table from Djibouti, Greenland and the Moon.

Arsenal versus Tottenham is one of the most exciting games in the footballing calendar. Don’t believe us? The stats don’t lie! In the last eight Premier League meetings between the two sides, Arsenal have won three, Spurs four, and one draw, the crazy 3-3 at White Hart Lane in April 2011. There have been only two red cards in the last eight Premier League meetings, for Scott Parker and Emmanuel Adebayor, who were both playing for Tottenham. However, being a derby, you wouldn’t want to bet against one being shown.
2
Betting on over 3.5 goals looks promising: it’s happened in half of these last eight fixtures, with a total of 37 goals, which equates to roughly four-and-ahalf goals a game! But if you’re feeling particularly lucky, over 4.5 goals doesn’t look like a bad shout either; it’s happened four times since 2009!
The all-time top goalscorer in the derby is Adebayor, with eight goals for Arsenal and two for Tottenham. Talk about divided loyalties! If he gets a start, expect him to be fired up!
