THE HTW ALTERNATIVE GUIDE
DANNY STONE'S DIARY: Anticipation, apprehension and, above all, confusion – this particular instalment felt like watching a mix of the BAFTAs and the National Lottery whilst four or five spliffs down. No wonder the stadiums are so behind schedule if the Brazilians fuck around doing Capoeira before getting on with the job in hand. Two special additions to our 32 spherical delights came in the

form of Fernanda Lima’s cleavage. Excited and disappointed by unfulfilled prospect of Lima rummaging around the mysterious ‘Pot X’. All the talk of pots and seeds and other cooking utensils made me hungry. Jonathan Pearce’s reactions were over-dramatic – like he was back on Robot Wars. “If England are drawn now, this will be shit.” Pearcey yelled, before concluding, “England are drawn! This is shit!” How we all yearned for Matilda or Sergeant Bash to come on and destroy the stage after England’s name was

extracted from the Kinder egg of doom. The country had an influx of temporary local weathermen. 14432% rise in use of word ‘humidity’. Roy Hodgson trying to play down the heat whilst sweating profusely in post-draw interviews wasn’t a blessing.
Peter Shilton Did you watch the draw? In full? I did, yeah. I don’t know why they make them so complicated! It’s almost like they make it different just for different’s sake. Give me an old FA Cup draw – that was the most exciting - just put the balls in the hat and see what happens.
Initial reactions? Obviously we were one of the last to be drawn. Mixed I’d say. We were one of the last to be drawn and a lot of easier groups went by but not too bad really on the whole. When I heard about the heat and humidity in Manaus I thought it wasn’t great but at least it’s out of the way first. Speaking of the heat – what was it like in Mexico? Funnily enough the first game in 1982 in Bilbao was unbelievably hot as well. There was no wind, a bowl stadium that was very hot. We beat France 3-1 so couldn’t have been too bad!
We always prepared quite well. Not many people realise but I actually went to Sir Alf would n’t be happy Mexico in 1970 – I didn’t make the final 22 but was with the squad for the month before. Similar in ’86 – we were in Colorado for a month. It’s just about drinking plenty of liquids, getting plenty of fluids and the right amount of salt or whatever. So you expect the lads to be okay in Brazil in that respect? It’ll be more difficult for European teams but they just need to get on with it really! First game will undoubtedly be difficult but any result will be great for the squad. What was your favourite World Cup? Italia 90’ was obviously the best result and some great games along the way despite a slow start. That was the highlight of my international career. To come so close to the

final – away from England as well – was very special. How is it being away from home for such a long time? Well the hardest thing obviously is the downtime - especially with the preparation month before. You want to keep yourselves occupied but it can get a bit boring! Our wives and family came over to Colorado but that didn’t always happen. I remember Bobby used to let us sunbathe in 1990 but Sir Alf didn’t so a bit harder to keep busy. Later we had video games & films but yeah it can be tough. So was the World Cup the pinnacle for you? It’s certainly up there. Playing for England of course made me immensely proud. I played right the way from schoolboy, through youth, under-23s as it was and through to the senior squad and then Italia ‘90 was amazing! But to win back-to-back European Cups (with Forest, 1979 & 1980) – I mean, that might never happen again! And what’s your honest opinion for Brazil? I think we can be confident. If we get out of the group that shows we can compete with some of the best and that will stand us in good stead. I think we’re making a few too many errors at the back though. I, personally, would bring back John Terry on a temporary basis to shore things up defensively.

HUNTING
We track down the West Country buck taking a shot at the Portuguese title. INTERVIEW: Josh Modaberi / WORDS: Danny Stone
n the Iberian Peninsula there’s an Englishman creating quite a stir. For once it’s not a lager-lout arrested for his overzealous celebrations Stag Do celebrations but, rather, a talented young footballer named Eric Dier, born in Cheltenham and now a shining light for Primeira Liga heavyweights Sporting Lisbon. Dier, who can play at right-back, centre back or in midfield, emigrated to the

Portuguese capital when still in primary school. Now 19, he has established himself as first-choice at a club with serious title ambitions and has also become a regular feature for England under-21s in recent times. Indeed it’s a unique story but some may have his trajectory is one that some may have seen coming from a young age. Son of a former professional tennis player, the young starlet told Halftime Whistle that sport was
central to his family upbringing: “I’m from a big family and we were always playing different sports at home. My parents never pressured me into doing anything - they just let me do what I liked – but that just happened to be sport, mainly football.” Following a family holiday, the Diers decided to move to Portugal on a permanent basis, meaning a fresh start for seven-yearold whippersnapper Eric. Of the interest reported in him, Dier said, “Naturally it was nice being linked with those clubs but I’ve seen other kids leave Sporting and ended up nowhere so there was never any doubt in my mind that I wanted to stay. I’ve always felt when the time is right to leave I would feel it and be sure.” There has also been speculation with regards to his international future. Despite representing England throughout youth level, the cheeky blighters at the Portuguese FA were said to be keeping tabs on one of their prized citizens. However, Dier is unequivocal about which nation he belongs, “Both of my parents are English and I was born in England so I didn’t think it would be right to play for Portugal!” He made his Under-21 debut in the 6-0 humbling of Scotland in August and says that international duty he always very much looks forward. “It’s nice to come back over to England and experience a different culture and atmosphere. And obviously it really helps with my progression for both club and country. The lads find it weird that I speak another language though!” Speaking with Dier, his level-headed nature belies his years and no doubt stands him in good stead on the pitch as well. With England’s defence being brought under question just recently, it may be sooner rather than later that the English public get exposed to senhor Eric Dier. For now, though, he’s just keeping his feet on the ground. “I just want to keep on improving because I’ve still got such a long way to go. I want to prove myself first for club and country and then see where that takes me!”

JASON BENT We speak to the Premier League’s most precocious striker!
17
JASON BENT
remier League talisman Jason Bent is still suspended for an incident at Goodison Park last season when he was seen training with the Manchester City squad. During his absence from the game, Bent has joined comedian Lee Nelson on a mega UK Tour. Halftime Whistle’s Joshua Modaberi caught up with Bent to talk about his version of events at Goodison Park, his hopes for England in Brazil, his Xmas charity work plus much more!
P
How has the start of the season been for you? It’s been easily the best season of my career. I’m still banned from all football grounds ‘cos of the Goodison Park incident so I’m getting £185,000 a week for doing sweet FA. I don’t think it’ll have a long-term impact on my career. Yeah I’m not allowed within one mile of a ground for the next three months but Tevez was 6000 miles away for six months and it didn’t do him any harm. What are you hoping to achieve this season? Hopefully all my hard work will pay off and I’ll get the record for smashing the most teammates’ wives in one season.
Joe Hart tried to grab me, I slipped through his gloves.”
What has been your greatest achievement in football to date? Playing for six different clubs in one season, earning me and my agent £58 million in signing on fees and bungs.
BENT IN NUMBERS
What is the general thought in the England camp at the moment with what the team can achieve at the World Cup in Brazil? The lads strongly believe that if everyone plays to their absolute potential we can get knocked out in the Quarter Finals.
BENT'S OTHER OFFENCES
So what happened at Goodison Park last season then? I just did an Odemwingie and turned up outside the ground. But unlike him I was actually let in. I’ve started warming up with the Manchester City lads and the next thing I know I’ve got handcuffs on and I’m being escorted off the pitch. I was absolutely gutted, mainly cos I had fifty grand on me scoring the first goal. Joe Hart tried to grab me but of course I slipped through his gloves. And Kolo Toure tried to chase after me but he hadn’t taken his diet pills so he couldn’t keep up. Who is the best player you’ve played with? Bébé Who are some of your best mates in football? Joey Barton - cracking lad. And he’s been a very stabilising influence on me, I’m also now good mates with Carlos Tevez. When I first came on the pitch at Goodison Park I thought he was angry but now I know that’s the face he always has. Lots of footballers have their own charities, do you do any charity work? Of course I do – every Christmas me and the lads are forced to visit some sick kids in hospital. I know people have a pop at footballers saying we’re overpaid compared to nurses and now I know why – I’ve had a kick around with them and they’re shit. I’m also a big supporter of the FA’s Kick It Out campaign, we’ve got to kick racism out of football and into the stands where it belongs.

BEHIND BENT
Simon Brodkin is an English comedian, previously a medical doctor, who performs on the stand-up circuit and in comedy television series. He helped write Al Murray’s Multiple Personality Disorder in 2009 before going it alone and is best known for his BBC Three character Lee Nelson. Would you consider yourself a role model to children? Absolutely. Especially if those children are looking to become greedy, money-grabbing, womanising bastards. You’ve had a few run-ins with your manager, how is that relationship now? Our relationship’s improved massively since me and the lads got him sacked. What are your plans for after football, would you like to become a manager or do media work? I think I’ll have a bash at being a football pundit - if Andy Townsend and Mark Lawrenson can both get a job then surely any one can. I’ll probably try Sky first – gives me the best chance of having a crack at Kirsty Gallagher. Where do you see yourself being in 10 years’ time? I’ll be looking to emulate Ryan Giggs and sleep with my brother’s wife.
OLLY MURS
We speak to global superstar and undisputed Cheeky King of pop about all things footie! lly Murs - singer, songwriter, presenter and all-round good lad rose to prominence during the 2009 X-Factor series where he finished as runner-up. Since then Olly has gone on to achieve unprecedented success, selling over 10 million records worldwide with two number one albums and four number one singles in the UK alone. Away from the mic, Olly’s big passion is football and Manchester United in particular. He took time out of his busy schedule to sit down with Halftime Whistle’s Josh Modaberi (the lucky bugger!) to talk about playing at Old Trafford and Wembley, going head-to-head with Wayne Rooney at FIFA , plus a load more. Enjoy!

Please Don’t Let Me Go (2010) Heart Skips A Beat f. Rizzle Kicks (2011) Dance With Me Tonight (2011) Troublemaker f. Flo Rida (2012) First of all - being from Essex, why United!? To be honest with you I’ve never been someone to follow the crowd and being from Essex, just outside of London, it would’ve been easy for me to pick a London team but at the time I just didn’t think they were the teams for me. My Dad was a United fan and was always trying to convince me to be so I decided they’ll be my team. Everyone at school caned me for it but when Beckham came along that’s when I knew it was alright. I remember another kid wearing an Arsenal shirt with his blonde hair like Beckham’s and his (Adidas) Predators and it just wasn’t right! Even today people say I’m a Cockney Red, but I’m used to it - it’s like water off a duck’s back! You’re touring quite a lot at the minute – do you get to Old Trafford much? I’ve got a season ticket and try to go up as much as possible. This season’s been hard I went up to watch the Southampton game and the match against Stoke which we won
20
in the last minute but they are the only two games I’ve been able to make it to this season which isn’t like me normally, I usually get to see at least six or seven. Hopefully after Christmas I’ll try and get up there a lot more to cheer on the lads!
The Class of ‘92 documentary is just out– what are your memories of that crop of players? Ah that looks incredible - I can’t wait to see it. Giggsy was the first one to come through - I had all his pictures up on my wall and had Giggs’ name on the back of my shirt as well. Then obviously Becks - I was a massive Beckham fan as a kid – I had the blonde hair, the Predators, I thought I was him! Then Butt, Scholes, the Neville brothers, all of them top class players and I will always remember the season when they came through and Alan Hansen said his famous words - “you can’t win anything with kids” then obviously we went on to win the league. That showed him! You’ve played in the Soccer Aid games at Old Trafford, what have those experiences been like? They’re amazing. I obviously love football and love playing. I played semi-professional to a really decent standard so I’m grateful to have had the opportunity to play at the Theatre of Dreams and represent United and England. It was an incredible experience to walk out at Old Trafford and hear the fans. I’ve got my United shirt on my wall at home!

There’s a bit of a football rivalry between you and Nick Grimshaw - tell us about that? And what did your ambassadorial role involve then? When I took the ambassador role on I think a lot of football fans got confused and thought I was going to be on the FA board making decisions - which obviously wasn’t quite right! The role was more to get involved in the grass roots, showing kids and my fans that anyone can get involved with football. It was great - we haven’t been able to do loads, unfortunately, due to the schedules. The game at Wembley with Nick was basically to bring the curtain down on the FA’s 150th celebrations. Doing anything that connects me with football is amazing because I love football so much!
Have you got any friends in football? There is a guy that I used to play with Cody McDonald who now plays for Gillingham, we used to play together for a team called Valley Swifts and I still get on really well with him. Occasionally I chat to a few of the United players – I get on well with Rio Ferdinand and he invited me to his testimonial. I’ve met Wayne Rooney as well and played FIFA against him, which by the way he absolutely smashed me at! Kammy has been down to a few events that I’ve done which is great, he’s a top lad. Dion Dublin, ex-United, has been a part of a few things I’ve done and David May as well the old United pro has been someone that I’ve gotten on really well with. Alan Shearer’s another one – I guess I have got some decent friends in the game! And have you considered a World Cup song for Brazil next year? Some people have been talking about it but if I was to do it I would like to do it with someone else, make it a cool collaboration, maybe I could speak to Rizzle Kicks and do something with them? Is there anything you can tell us about yourself that we don’t already know?
