WELCOME Welcome to the 2018 Arts Directory produced by the Arts Council ~ Haliburton Highlands! In one of many other roles around the County, I have the pleasure of being the Director of the Haliburton Highlands Museum. Time and again, visitors to the museum comment on our amazing arts, culture and heritage community and I feel a great delight in being able to recommend a wide range of studios to visit, artisans to check out and impressive events to attend. Those of us who live in the County are truly lucky to get to experience this every day! Even if you know our arts and culture community well, there are always new treasures to be discovered and that is where we feel that the Arts Directory can be an invaluable resource. We hope you’ll take this publication with you on your adventures in the coming year and find new places and events to appreciate. As an organization, the Arts Council ~ Haliburton Highlands is extremely proud to help facilitate a range of programs through our roundtables for performing, visual and literary artists. In 2017, we also helped to bring Fashion Fallies, an outstanding wearable art event, back to the Highlands. Artists in the Schools, one of our longest-standing programs, nurtures the next generation, while SPARC (Supporting Performing Arts in Rural Communities) helps us to connect with creators across the province. I encourage you to make 2018 a year to get involved with arts, culture and heritage in new ways – there can be no doubt that we’re stronger together! Oxtongue Lake for Arts and Culture (OLAC) is a local, nonprofit, organization that celebrates and highlights the historic and ongoing connection of art, community and the beautiful environment of Oxtongue Lake. Formed in 2013, OLAC is dedicated to researching and promoting Oxtongue Lake’s connection with famed Canadian painter Tom Thomson and members of the Group of Seven. These artists were greatly inspired by the landscape of Oxtongue Lake and the nearby Oxtongue River. OLAC installed the Group of Seven Outdoor Exhibit at the community centre and helped produce Bob Hilscher’s documentary, Painting the Wilderness of the Oxtongue. OLAC’s ongoing project is to install interpretive placards at vistas painted by Canada’s legendary painters.

ARTS COUNCIL SPONSORED PROGRAMS ARTIST IN THE SCHOOLS The Artist in the Schools program has presented the inspiring world of dance, drama, music and visual arts to local schools in Haliburton County for 16 years. The talented artists involved in the program bring their knowledge and expertise into the classroom, immersing children and teachers in engaging hands-on experiences and introducing the working world of an artist. ART IN PUBLIC SPACES The Arts Council ~ Haliburton Highlands provides opportunities for member artists to display their work in public venues and at cultural events throughout the County. Art shows include both short-term ‘pop-up’ displays and longer exhibitions. Thanks to all our business and member supporters for making these shows possible.

FEBRUARY ARTLOVER’S STAYCATION The Arts Council~Haliburton Highlands and the Rails End Gallery hosted their 5th annual art lover’s event in February 2018. Participants attended the 3 days of inspiration, conversation and exploration set at the Rails End Gallery. Watch for a repeat performance of the Artlover’s STAYcation in 2019 when the snow flies.
