WELCOME Welcome to the 2019 Arts Directory produced by the Arts Council ~ Haliburton Highlands! Here in Haliburton County, we’ve long been aware of the value of the arts, and it’s one of the attractions for which this area is known. Artists, artisans and performers now choose to make their homes here specifically to be a part of our supportive arts community. Interestingly, recent studies have begun to focus on the links between arts and culture and health and well-being to the point that in cities, like Toronto and Montreal, doctors are now beginning to provide “prescriptions for the arts” for their patients, rather than medication. How lucky we are to have an amazing arts scene right in our own back gardens! We hope this Directory will aid you in your explorations this year, inspiring you to travel to new places, enjoy new experiences and make new connections. 2019 is shaping up to be a busy year for the Arts Council, as we build on the successes of 2018. Mark your calendar for the return of Fashion Fallies, our signature wearable art event, as well as the continued growth of our writerin-residence program, which brought renowned author Frances Itani to our community last year. You can look forward to the growth of our education programs, as well as exciting new initiatives spearheaded by our roundtables for performing, literary and visual artists. There are so many fun and exciting ways that you can get involved, and I hope as you peruse these pages, you find one that strikes your fancy! Happy reading! Cheers, Kate Butler Chair, Arts Council ~ Haliburton Highlands MISSION The Arts Council~Haliburton Highlands strives to provide a strong voice for arts, heritage and culture in Haliburton County: to serve as a catalyst for community economic development through the arts, heritage and culture and through the facilitation of collaborative relationships among artists, organizations, businesses and government, contribute to the vibrancy of the arts and community life. MANDATE • • • • •

Serve as a voice for artists and arts, culture and heritage within the County and to the world Provide opportunities for communication and sharing information within the arts community Provide business resources and facilitation services for artists, organizations and businesses Be a catalyst for new community economic development initiatives related to the arts Promote arts education opportunities for people of all ages and provide professional development for artists and arts professionals • Work with community partners to promote the arts within the County and to the world at large • Provide opportunities to celebrate the arts

Summer living is easy. Choosing just one art course is hard. This year’s summer program features over 300 courses, including more than 50 new classes to explore: Indigenous History, Symbolism & Art, Creativity - Expanding the Right Brain, Composition & Colour for Painting, Stagecraft - Creating a Scene, Macramé, and Painting & Yoga, to name a few. So whether you are enrolling for the first time, or you come back every year, we have courses for your interests and abilities. The Haliburton School of Art + Design is a wonderful place to learn, grow and create, and we hope you can take some time for yourself this summer to explore fresh possibilities.
