WHO WE ARE There is an irresistible symmetry to the rugs appearing in this lookbook. Three brands united in one purpose–to create exceptional carpets–guided by three principles: quality, originality and beauty. Battilossi has been associated with connoisseurship in the textile arts for two generations; Lapchi is the leading maker of bespoke rugs in North America; and Tak Özer has been at the forefront of rug making in the Indian Subcontinent and Nepal for over 25 years. Each rug, each project and each collaboration unites the experience of these three, with unique woven artworks of the highest quality as the result.

ECLECTICA Eclectica brings together the different skills of all the team members. It is the innovative vision of a designer with a passionate devotion to beauty in handmade rugs. Designed in Italy and handknotted in Lahore, the process entails particularly complex weaving techniques and supreme attention to detail, with the unique surface achieved through the meticulous work of a team of restorers of antique rugs. Small-pot dyeing heightens the texture in a celebration of colour.

INSPIRATION Inspired by the surfaces we see around us, Eclectica is a meditation on the life cycle of manmade materials. The abstract, organic designs in the collection demonstrate how sublime refinement can be found in something as prosaic as a corroded sheet of metal, and the profound abilities of yarn to transform and tell tangible stories.

PATTERN MIX The collection is the result of matching a small technical weaving feature particular to our workshops in Pakistan with the vision of designer Draga Obradovic, whose fabrics combine handprinting and painting with the organic look and feel of vintage textiles. The ability to reflect the clarity and purity of Draga Obradovic’s original work is the result of the exquisite skill of the Lahore weaving studio and the extremely detailed finishing of each carpet.

The physical texture of a hand-printed cotton is recognisable to many but few can fully articulate it. Creating rugs that reflect the unique character of vintage textiles or upholstery is more about trying to capture the layers of meaning conveyed by the textures of a textile than simply creating a pattern. The fabrics created by Draga Obradovic’s atelier achieve her signature look and authenticity through layering cloth, pattern and colour; here they are translated into a pile carpet collection with its own signature style.

FORMA ET TINTA Forma et Tinta, the first capsule collection by Galleria Battilossi and Lapchi, is revolutionary in three ways: a new approach to colour, a new perspective on form and a unique woven structure. By using multiple planes and blocks of deep colour, the carpets achieve a fluidity that is reflected in their organic shapes. The carpets are woven with a new technique that combines pile with areas of flatweave resulting in a signature woven look, giving the blocks an additional depth and earthy tone.

INSPIRATION The collection uses two points of reference: the dynamic approach to form and colour found in Cubist art and the needs of today’s contemporary interiors. The current popularity of furniture from the Fifties requires strong colours and organic fluid shapes. The role of carpets in defining specific spaces has changed as new modes of living have developed, therefore by breaking the traditional rectilinear form of a carpet, the Forma et Tinta Collection unlocks the versatility of woven pieces for the floor and provides greater freeedom and flexibilty in their use.

LINEA Fields of colour run throughout the collection, accented by roughly drawn lines. The coarse weave perfectly shows the quality of the wool and allows the variations in colour, achieved through a special dyeing process, maximum expression. The collection is designed for use in less formal but modern interior settings and to reflect the warmth, and texture, character and familiarity expected in areas of constant use.

INSPIRATION While colour and texture underpin all our collections, in the case of the carpets in the Linea collection it was particularly important to deliver these in a form inspired by minimalism while still providing warmth and character to a room. The physical character of each rug suggests informality and individuality, while the design expresses a contemporary restrained aesthetic but with the personality of a handmade artefact.

INSPIRATION Constrasts inspire this collection but colour and its interaction with tactile material underpins its success. Silk is used in fields of confident hues interspersed with wool throughout the pile; this is in contrast to the plain and coloured sari-silk used to embellish the sides and ends. The rich materiality of the pile contrasts with the textured weave in an unexpected design harmony.

SERIES 2 #1 Innovation drives all of our collections, and finding a new spirit from the traditional weaving techniques from Tibet was the starting point for this series. The experience and deep knowledge of our whole team was distilled into the new weave and finishing of these rugs. The handmade and organic feel, the unique signature of all our carpets, is successfully combined with our artisans’ ability to weave complex patterns with the material associated with the best Nepalese carpets.

INSPIRATION Our admiration for the historical weaving techniques of Nepal and Tibet made us realise just what it would be possible for our talented weavers to achieve with this collection, which is a complete departure from conventional modes of production. With a more organic handle, these intricate weaves allow for the translation of complex images into pile. Each composition, each motif has its own cut finish, meaning that each carpet has its own character.

OUR WORK These collections are the fruit of the passionate and dedicated labour of over 150 people working together; from conceptual designers to technical development specialists to all the different teams of resource managers, dyers, weavers, washers, finishing specialists, quality management staff, client services staff and marketing and sales teams. To us, every single carpet represents a shared vision of aesthetic relationships.

CUSTOM The rugs in this lookbook merely represent a small part of our total catalogue. We currently make over a hundred designs in multiple colourways in a variety of techniques. All of these can be further customised in terms of size, colour and shape. We are pleased to provide digital images of each of our designs upon request.
