We would like to welcome all the new clients to Halls Fine Art and the return of many longstanding ones. 2021 has heralded some eye-catching results and yielded collections from scratch-built trains, Charles Tunnicliffe artwork, Oriental, children’s antique ceramic teawares, The David Bowie collection of artist Edward Bell, Lorenzl bronzes, Caughley porcelain, Boucheron jewellery to books and coins to name but a few. Country house dispersals from Herefordshire to North Wales provided further magnets for buyers and collectors alike.” - Gerry Berwyn-Jones Head of Fine Art
Charity Mud Run
Gemma, Chloe, Abigail & Alexander took part in the Shropshire Mud Run to raise money for a great cause
We did it! We navigated muddy puddles, logs, bogs, rivers & streams. We had mud fights, wrestled and feel closer than ever! We raised money for the wonderful charity Severn Hospice that brings specialist care & support to families across Shropshire, Telford & Wrekin & Mid-Wales who are living with an incurable illness. We’d like to say a massive thank you to our families, friends, colleagues and clients that contributed towards this amazing cause. Every donation was really appreciated.

The David Bowie Collection of Artist Edward Bell We collaborated directly with Edward Bell, a contemporary artist who achieved great success in the 1980s and 1990s as a photographer and mixed media artist and who was commissioned by British pop icon David Bowie to design the artworks for his albums Scary Monsters (and Super Creeps) and Tin Machine II.

We were delighted to bring to auction Edward’s entire collection of original sketches and concepts for the albums as well as sculptures, portraits and original polaroid photographs taken during their photoshoots together. It was very exciting to work directly with the artist and combine auction with exhibition to bring together this unique collection of art and pop memorabilia relating to one of the most recognised bigail Molenaar wi A t s and celebrated Pop Stars in the i l th A cia rtis world. The provenance was Spe tE outstanding, having been dw ar consigned directly from d the artist and so was the condition, having been in storage since the 1980s, there were even vinyl records that had never been played and a packet of Scary Monsters bubble gum that was still in the wrapper!

In July and August 2021 we held a very exciting and unique auction. The David Bowie Collection of Artist Edward Bell was experimental, combining an online auction with a fully curated exhibition of the artwork at The Dory Gallery in Llangollen
News of the auction soon spread and there was worldwide press coverage of the sale with articles published throughout Europe, America, India, Japan and calls coming in from fan clubs and Bowie collector networks from all over the globe. The printed catalogue sold out within weeks and we had news crews filming interviews at the gallery with our specialist Abigail Molenaar and Edward Bell. At the exhibition opening event there were Bowie fans queuing up outside the doors, wearing their tour t-shirts, having travelled for miles around to be part of the experience.

In-house
The David Bowie auction made a total £94,000 (including fees) and was a successful experiment with new ways of auctioneering and navigating the art market in the modern world. Halls will certainly be exploring more such sales in the future watch this space!

“It was so exciting to have been able to bring this auction together and offer this amazing single-owner collection on the art market. It was a complete roller coaster, the sheer amount of interest and excitement surrounding the sale was staggering and we found ourselves talking to Bowie fans from across the world as well as musicians and people in the music business who knew Bowie back in the day. It was wonderful to also be able to combine the auction with a beautifully curated exhibition at a contemporary art gallery to really tion catalog showcase the collection at its best.” the auc u

A Beautiful Collection of Boucheron Founded in Paris in 1858 by Frederick Boucheron, this luxury brand, known for their bold and innovative designs, has constantly evolved throughout the years to stay at the forefront of this high-end market. All of the pieces offered dated from the 1950’s through to the 1970’s and each exhibited, in their own unique way, Boucherons characteristic styles and forms.

A diamond set ‘ribbon’ necklace proved most popular, finishing at £15,000 +bp against a pre-sale estimate of £7,000 - £9,000 closely followed by an impressive diamond cluster ring and a beautiful blue enamel and diamond flower brooch that realised £12,000 and £6,500 +bp respectively. Demonstrating perfectly the brands more playful side, an 18ct gold novelty brooch in the form of a waddling duck was highly contested on the day, paddling away at £1,900 + bp. Both this, and the blue enamel and diamond brooch, were accompanied with photocopies of the original purchase receipts dated c e k n l a d c e, so mon ld £ 1966 and 1967, offering the new buyers an added dia 15, A piece of history related to the pieces that 0 they too will go on to cherish for decades to come.
A real highlight and privilege for the jewellery department in 2021 was offering for auction an exquisite private collection of Boucheron jewellery. Consigned by a local vendor into our hugely successful Summer auction, this stunning collection achieved over £50,000 (inclusive of premium) It was not just jewellery that we were delighted to offer in this collection but also two silver and gilt stone set compacts. Boucheron are just as famed for their stunning Objet d’art as their jewellery creations and these two examples did not disappoint. The finer of the two was decorated with an intricate basket of flowers set with cabochon rubies and mirror back, opening to reveal two hinged compartments. The collection was purchased by a handful of buyers and evidently appealed to the international market with two of the successful purchasers residing in China. As we move into 2022 I look forward to seeing more collections and curating the jewellery sales to showcase them.

The year ahead
Our Specialists give an exciting insight into what we have planned for the year ahead, here’s to 2022!
“The focus for 2022 is the specialist timed auctions and the series of quarterly seasonal auctions, all of which have been very well received in 2021. Consequently, the former will cover militaria, Asian art and modern & contemporary art and have been expanded since last year. The latter already has a good array of works consigned for sale, with a collection of lithographs by William Henry Scott, but first out of the blocks is the militaria sale, opening for bidding on the 14th of January. One highlight in this sale is a Waterloo medal awarded to a ‘foot’ gunner, with an estimate of £1,000 - £1,500. The Spring Auction in March fields an impressive cross-section of good quality works. Fine jewellery, silver, watches and porcelain are well represented and include a Rolex chronometer wristwatch, an Art deco diamond and sapphire bracelet and a novelty Edwardian silver sugar caster in the form of an owl. All commercial objects they also share an estimate of £4,000 - £6,000. Equally popular, but encountered little at auction, is the work by Thomas Henry Kendall. A collection of his lime wood carvings will be in the same auction and are sure to generate a lot of interest, as they form part of the renowned Warwick School oeuvre. In the furniture section is a William IV specimen marble, or pietre dura, centre table. Far from being pigeon-holed as dull in colour, this is anything but, with a radiating display of multi-coloured marbles. This is estimated at £2,000 - £3,000, but given its originality, despite the damage, it might surprise onlookers on the day. In the picture section, a very large example (61cm x 92cm) by the technically proficient 19th/20th century Midlands artist, Edgar Hunt, will be offered with a guide of £7,000 £10,000. Will this local lot remain in the region? This is a taste of things to come, as there are numerous collections in the process of being appraised. Regarding COVID restrictions, Halls will maintain our clients safety at all times and keep everyone informed via our website and social media. But one thing is certain and that is we will continue to operate one way or another, as we have for the last 18 months and bring to the public a stream of interesting, varied and collectable works of art.” - Gerry Berwyn-Jones
Silver & Jewellery
“Following a hugely successful year for the Silver & Jewellery department, we’re already excited about what’s to come in 2022. Our first fine sale of the year includes some stunning pieces of jewellery, including an Art Deco diamond and sapphire bracelet estimated at £4,000 £6,000 and a pair of diamond stud earrings at £1,500 - £2,000. Silver is also set to shine, with a charming owl sugar caster by Goldsmiths and Silversmiths hoping to fly away at £4,000 - £6,000” - Maryanne Lineker-Mobberley
Ceramics, Glass & Militaria
“I am excited to be adding two specialist Timed Militaria auctions into our 2022 calendar. As somebody who studied Military History at university and has always been a bit of a self-professed ‘nerd’ in this area, I’m extremely excited to expand on our previous successes in this department whilst expanding on my knowledge and handling items of historical importance, as well as continuing to thrive with our Ceramics & Glass department” - Caroline Dennard
Paintings & Prints “2021 has been a fantastic year for the Paintings & Prints department with stellar results throughout as well as having held our first auction/exhibition of a single-owner David Bowie art collection which attracted worldwide attention. In 2022 I am looking forward to offering several exciting collections of wildlife art as well as a diverse Modern Art auction this spring representing some of the biggest names in British 20th Century art as well as new cutting-edge contemporary artists.” - Abigail Molenaar
Asian Art, Furniture & Works of Art
“It’s been a great year for Asian Art with strong prices throughout. Our timed auction in November was a welcome return to stand-alone Asian auctions; next year we have two further Asian auctions planned along with our seasonal Fine Art sales. The 2022 season gets off to a great start with an important collection of Warwick School wood carvings from the studio of Thomas Henry Kendall among many other exciting lots.” - Alexander Clement
