Thank you
WE WOULD LIKE TO SAY A MASSIVE
TO ALL OUR CLIENTS
"On behalf of the entire Halls Fine Art department I would like to thank all our clients, both vendors and buyers, for their continued support and loyalty during yet another difficult year." On the positive side we would like to welcome all the new clients to Halls Fine Art and the return of many longstanding ones. This auction is certainly well represented by both camps. Furthermore, 2021 has heralded some eye-catching results and yielded collections from scratch-built model trains, Charles Tunnicliffe artwork, Oriental, chidren’s antique ceramic teawares, The David Bowie collection of artist Edward Bell, Lorenzl bronzes, Caughley porcelain, Boucheron jewellery to books and coins to name but a few. Country house dispersals from Herefordshire to North Wales provided further magnets for buyers and collectors alike. Returning to The Christmas Auction there is, as ever, an eclectic mix. A good array of Chinese works, including the ‘pig-dragon’ antiquity (lot 332, £20,000 - £40,000) to the 20th century watercolour by Xiongcai (lot 331, £10,000 - £15,000), provide both ends of the dateline spectrum. The latter is further represented in the picture section with more Tunnicliffes and a Matthew Smith portrait (lot 255, £6,000 - £8,000) and in the ceramics with a Picasso ‘Visage’ plate (lot 312, £3,000 - £4,000), but the jewellery is well represented too. The traditional, though less fetching, still has something to say with an equally disparate range of
10
works, including a small collection of equestrian art and British landscapes, to Caughley and Meissen porcelain, with country house furniture and effects and naïve works of art to boot. There is ample opportunity for last minute Xmas shoppers like me, with silver jewellery and watches also on offer, including an 18ct gold Rolex chronometer watch (lot 156, £4,000 - £6,000) for the generous shopper, but rest assured there is self-evidently something for all pockets and sizes. Enjoy browsing through the catalogue, but why not come and visit us, as it will make a refreshing change from the online experience. The sale’s variety is bound to have something to tempt most tastes and it would be nice to think that whether it is the centrepiece, or the housekeeper’s cupboard, a picture or a piece of jewellery that whatever the present it will be put to good use on this yuletide, or if not pressed into service, enjoyed for its aesthetic qualities. Happy Christmas and we wish you a happy and prosperous 2022!

A RARE CHINESE DARK GREEN JADE CARVING OF A ZHULONG 'PIG-DRAGON', HONGSHAN CULTURE, CIRCA 3500BC
Carved as a coiled mythical animal with fin-like ears, wide round eyes and a wrinkled snout, drilled with a single aperture just behind the head, the stone of dark green hue with russet flecks and patches, 17cm high. Provenance: S.J.E. Bryan, 1st Battalion Bedfordshire and Hertfordshire Regiment, acquired while serving in Shanghai, 1927, thence by descent to the vendor. Footnote: A zhulong or 'pig-dragon' is a mythical beast thought to be a hybrid of a pig and a serpent, reflecting the agrarian nature of the culture that produced them. The hard nephrite stone had to be worked with bone or bamboo tools and an abrasive powder such as carborundum or ground garnet - highly labour intensive and skilled work. Zhulong have been recovered from tomb sites in Northern China, typically found placed on the chest of the deceased as a pendant adornment. Fragments of zhulong carvings have also been found at the fertility temple complex in Niuheliang, Kezuo, Liaoning province, suggesting a use in fertility rituals. The size of the present example is unusually large and has only a few known precedents. Another dark green jade example measuring 16.6cm high was unearthed from Yangcheng, Inner Mongolia, now in the Bairin Right Banner Museum, and a celadon zhulong at 15cm high resides in the Liaoning Provincial Institute of Archaeology and Cultural Relics. A further example to compare at 15.3cm high can be found in the Musee Guimet, Paris. Compare also Christie's New York, The Florence and Herbert Irving Collection, 21 March 2019, a similar jade zhulong with two suspension holes, measuring 13cm high. Samuel Joseph Ernest Bryan (1898-1975) served during WWI in the Bedfordshire Regiment as a private, number 10106, and is believed to have suffered from a mustard gas attack but nevertheless remained with the regiment after the war, being re-assigned as number 5942294 when the Bedfordshire and Hertfordshire regiments were amalgamated in 1919. He is recorded as serving in the 1st Batallion which was stationed in Shanghai in 1927 and was discharged in 1933. Among a small number of trinkets and keepsakes he purchased while in Shanghai is the present jade zhulong which remained in the family following Bryan's death in 1975, passing down to the current vendor. £20,000 - £40,000

A PAINTED MODEL OF THE MARKET HALL IN LLANIDLOES
circa 1900, showing the first floor door, used to load and unload flannel and wool and the ground floor door leading to the staircase to the first floor, in a glazed case, 59cm wide x 27cm deep x 49cm high A private Welsh estate.
Footnote: This model shows the first floor door (now absent), that was used to load and unload flannel and wool. In the early Victorian era when the flannel making industry was thriving, bales of flannel would be stored on the first floor of the market hall, before its transportation to Welshpool for sale. At the time this model was made the building had just started to be used as the working men's institute and library. This is supported by the models of working men outside the hall and sitting on the bench inside the arcading on the ground floor. Note the differences between the hall as seen in this model and the actual building as it is now. Clearly the two doors are now absent, but the decorative ridge tiles are now not present either. £400 - £600

A 19TH CENTURY CANE-HANDLED UMBRELLA OR PARASOL BY GLORIA OF LONDON
with beige cotton linen canopy, lined in dark blue, the cane stem with plain hook handle, in an associated card box inscribed in ink 'This umbrella & parasol given to Sir Alfred Rice-Oxley by Mrs Tuck of Kensington Palace, formerly belonging to Her Majesty Queen Victoria', 91cm long. Provenance: Sir Alfred Rice-Oxley (1856-1941), thence by descent to the vendor. Footnote: Sir Alfred Rice-Oxley was Physician-inOrdinary to Princess Beatrice (1857-1944), who moved into Kensington Palace circa 1896, following the death of her husband, Prince Henry. The label on the present lot indicates the umbrella or parasol was given to Rice-Oxley by Mrs Tuck which refers to Selina Tuck, Queen Victoria's devoted head dresser. It was Mrs Tuck who later prepared Her Majesty's coffin with specified favourite items and accessories, under instructions left for her by the Queen which were relayed to her personal physician, Sir James Reid. £500 - £800

AN EARLY 19TH CENTURY PAINTED, CARVED TREEN, ADVERTISING FIGURE
probably for tobacco, of a man standing with his left foot forward and right arm raised in the air, wearing a gold waistcoat and long black cloak, with a contemporaneous iron staple in the back, s/d, probably lacking its pipe, 61cm high A private Welsh estate. Footnote: These smaller advertising figures would have stood on the shop counter, or in the shop window. Given the staple this may well have been above the fascia. Larger ones, sometimes life size would have been placed on the pavement outside the shop. The oldest examples are black boys, or blackamoors. In the 17th century they were modelled on men from Guinea, but later depicted European type figures, such as this example. Pinto, Edward, H. Treen. London: 1968. Chapter 26, page 412. £500 - £700

A GOOD GEORGE III MAHOGANY, SERPENTINE FRONTED COMMODE
crossbanded and inlaid with boxwood stringing, the moulded top with a central oval panel above 4 wellfigured, graduated and cock-beaded long drawers, flanked on each side by a canted corner inlaid with a floral festoon, the sides of the commode curved, raised on shaped bracket feet, inlaid with stringing and unusually the canted corners inlaid with an acanthus flower-type motif, some minor damage, losses and restoration, 109cm wide x 64cm deep x 97.5cm high Provenance: A private Herefordshire estate. £2,000 - £3,000
Footnote: It is common to find the canted corners of these late 18th century chests showing blind fretwork, but unusual to find them inlaid. It is still more rare to see marquetry decoration and more rare still to see the canted corners of the bracket feet inlaid with marquetry. This example has both these features. it begs the question, who made this. Lot 64 sold on the 18th of November 2009 at Bonhams Bond Street for £19,200 (including premium), shares very similar marquetry canted corners. The floral pendants are strikingly alike, but there are no other significant comparisons to be made. Clearly, the maker of this commode was of note. Whether it was someone like Henry Kettle, who incorporated oval medallion inlaid tops and inlaid canted corners on his George III serpentine fronted mahogany commodes (see lot 44 in Bonhams' Bond Street sale on the 11th of march 2015), it is difficult to say. Henry Kettle was based in 18 St Paul's Church Yard, London, from circa 1773. In 1774 he took over Philip Bells' business (number 23 St Paul's Church Yard). He is known to have operated until circa 1797 and to have made shaped chests, or commodes, as well as wardrobes, Pembroke tables and bookcases. He supplied Saltram house, Devon and Wolverley House in Worcestershire; other commissions included Longford Hall, Salop.

CARRIAGE & PACKING If you are not able to collect in person Halls are happy to suggest a number of local carriers who will be able to arrange packing and shipping for you. Collection or shipping arrangements for lots can be made from midday on the next working day after the auction. Halls Fine Art are a small team so unfortunately has neither the staff, nor the facilities to provide a comprehensive packaging service, meeting buyer's or carriers’ various stipulations regarding box sizes and materials. Consequently, Halls will not package items for collection by third parties. Buyers that engage the services of companies that do not fulfill these criteria will be asked to email or write to Halls stating that they, the client, do so entirely at their own risk and take full responsibility for their choice. For further information, please email fineartpayments@hallsgb.com or call 01743 450700
IMPORTANT NOTICE TO JEWELLERY BUYERS Prospective buyers please note that lots marked with ◉ may be subject to VAT on the hammer price. Prospective buyers should note that although every effort is made to note repairs, restoration and damage in the catalogue descriptions, a lack of any such note should not be taken to imply that the lot is in perfect condition. Prospective watch buyers should note that the working order of watches is not guaranteed. All weights stated in the catalogue are approximate only, these figures are for reference only and prospective buyers should satisfy themselves as to the accuracy. Prospective buyers please note that we do not guarantee amber as being naturally formed and all or parts may be reconstituted. The colour of the amber may vary from the catalogue or online illustration. Prospective buyers are reminded that coloured gemstones have historically been treated to enhance their appearance. A variety of methods have been, and are currently used to improve both transparency and colour of various gemstones. All yellow and white metals have not been tested. The International Jewellery Trade generally accept these methods. It is not possible for Halls to obtain gemmological reports on all stones offered for sale and therefore all Halls Holding’s estimates assume that gemstones have been enhanced.
IMPORTANT NOTICE TO BOOK BUYERS Prospective buyers should be aware that general wear to include; creasing, light foxing, small tears, bumped corners, worn boards or weak spine/joints, will not be specified in the catalogue descriptions. Any substantial losses/wear to include detached boards, detached spines or extensive graffiti will be described as ‘at fault’.
IMPORTANT NOTICE Although every effort is made to note damage and restoration, the absence of such information does not imply that the lot is free from defects. Detailed condition reports and email images can be obtained on request until 4.30pm the day prior to the sale and can often be found on our website for each individual lot.
IMPORTANT NOTICE FOR OVERSEAS BUYERS Please would all overseas bidders note that if they are bidding from a ‘restricted country’, if they are successful and become the buyer and wish to pay by bank transfer, they will need to provide ID and permit due diligence checks BEFORE payment can be made. If payment is made before this can take place the buyer may end up paying for a cancelation initially, as our bank will not accept payments before the necessary due diligence checks are made.

BEFORE THE AUCTION What is buyer’s premium? All UK auctioneers charge a premium in addition to the hammer price. Halls’ Buyer’s Premium is 20% plus VAT for the first £500,000 and 12% above £500,000 per lot Can I ask questions about lots before the auction? You can ask for further details and extra images about any lots in our sales and this is especially important if you cannot view the lot in person. We don’t detail condition in our catalogue descriptions and so recommend asking for a condition report and additional images. Our reports provide a general guide to the condition of a lot but are not a forensic examination and so a physical inspection by you or an appointed agent is ideal. To request a condition report go to the lot of interest and click on the 'Request a condition report' button or email fineart@hallsgb.com. Condition reports are always given in writing. Registering to bid To bid in any one of our auctions we require all potential buyers to register and provide two forms of identification. This is to comply with existing Anti-Money Laundering Regulations. All our clients need to provide photo ID and proof of name and address by providing the following: a government issued form of photo identification (plastic card element of a driving licence, or passport) proof of address such as a bank statement or utility bill, dated within the last 3 months Please send copies via email to fineart@hallsgb.com when arranging your bid. These documents will be sent to a secure computer and uploaded to your client details. Please allow plenty of time for registration and before 4.30pm the day before the auction. Bids left after this time cannot be guaranteed and may not be submitted. Buying ivory Items made of or containing elements of elephant ivory are subject to trading bans in the USA and China among other jurisdictions, and are subject to CITES regulations in the UK. If you are bidding outside the UK, please ensure you are aware of your country’s regulations BEFORE bidding. We cannot rescind a sale if you are unable to ship ivory to your country
ATFER THE AUCTION When should I pay for and collect my purchase? We usually like to receive payment and collection arrangements within seven days of the auction. If you are the successful bidder and once you have paid for your items please arrange a Collection appointment using our Click and Collect service by phoning the office on 01743 450 700 or email fineart@hallsgb.com and state when you would like to collect. What payment methods can I use? You can pay with cash (up to £8,000), debit cards, direct bank transfer or a personal cheque. We regret that we do not accept payment by credit card. Cheques should be made payable to Halls Holdings Ltd
