WEEK SIX: Site Reports
Our Site! - rough estimate for a build like this as stated by the builder would be roughly $1.1-$1.2 Million! - The site at the moment is an empty block of land in which the original house has been demolished! - two connected houses, one at the front of the block and one at the back of the block. It will have 4 levels including the underground wine cellars and the roof top deck!

!

Process so far: ! - Established site !

• • • • •

!

Demolished original house ! Site cuts! Dug and pour deep foundations: screw piles ! Set out (boundaries and external walls)! Two holes out of three dug for the wine cellars!

Frame system: !

- Frame and skeletal systems ! - This is known as light weight construction ! - Very efficient for transporting loads and

!

made from light weight materials such as timber (Ching, 1975)!

Flooring system: ! - The construction system for the floor system will be a concrete slab with reinforced steel on the ground floor and then a timber floor system on the second and top floors! - In a timber floor system floor boards span joist to joist (Ching, 1975) !

Footing system: !

- concrete screw piles and pad footings! - The screw piles are placed underneath -

!

the footings, this occurs when you don't have suitable soil under the ground ! these are known as deep foundations, they drill down until they hit rock (Ching, 1975)! There is lot of ground work and prep to be done before for pouring the slab ! All the foundations and footings are created from concrete and are poured onsite (on in situ) ! The slab and piles have concrete rods and reinforcement in them to increase their strength !

Materials ! Pre cast Concrete ! - Used for the wine cellars! - Constructed in Sydney ! - Already fully waterproofed ! In situ Concrete ! - The concrete surrounding the wine cellars was poured on site ! - The foundations for the masonry wall was also poured onsite! - The slab will be poured once the foundations are ready ! Bricks ! - Masonry work will be used to build the neighbouring walls and also the parting wall between the houses! - The bricks used are going to be recycled bricks !

WEEK SIX: Site Reports   Group! Site one: ! - 19 apartments, 3 storey structure ! - 4.4 mill budget ! - 13 month schedule!

!

Process so far: ! - civil water systems ! - trenches dug out for footings ! - footings been constructed ! - the slab has been poured in situ ! - the concrete block walls have been constructed ! - second floor slab been poured ! - timber and metal stud framing been constructed ! - roof structure and cladding has begun construction !

!

Frame system: ! - column and beam! - exterior frame was created through hollow concrete blocks with reinforced steel bars, which is then filled with concrete ! - concrete columns also exist throughout the ground floor! - interior frame made from timber and metal ! - metal used for the garage to limit noise ! - timber frame stud walls used for the other tow levels ! - these two types of frames are not load bearing walls ! - fix joints used to combine concrete to columns, and pin joints used to connect timber to metal ! - walls covered in plaster boards!

!

Flooring system: ! - concrete slab ! - 1 floating, 2 suspended slabs

Footing system: ! - perimeter of building has strip footings that supports the load bearing walls and columns they are 50cmx100cm ! - for the car park pad footings were used they were 2x2 meters ! - the concrete slab was poured in situ, it was created in 2 halves ! - steel reinforcement was laid in created as a part of the slab ! - no precast concrete was used, therefore the concrete slab was very think!

!

Roof system ! - flat timber roof, has a slope less then 30 degrees, consists of beams and joists ! - uses tech beams (used to support structure), I beams (dense) and bond beams (used to transfer load throughout building) !

!

Materials ! - aluminium: used for the exterior louvers to allows ventilation and light through, also used for the batters to support the roof structure ! - timber: use for exterior cladding and for the secondary structure, also used for timber floors ! - concrete blocks: cheap, work well in compression, used for load bearing walls ! - steel: used in the concrete for reinforcement, strengthens concrete, also used in I beams ! - insulation: basic 2.5 rating, used in-between external walls ! - concrete: used for the slab, footings and the columns

WEEK SIX: Site Reports   Group three !

- 8 town houses and 16 apartments ! - 6 million budget !

!

Process so far: ! - footings installed! - concrete slab poured in situ ! - first floor and second floor stud walls and timber framing has been constructed/are still being constructed ! - flooring systems in both first and second floors have been laid down ! - water pipes for sewerage have been installed !

!

Frame system: ! - column and beam ! - timber stud walls and bracing ! - timber frame (treated pine) ! - brick cladding (veneer) ! - cantilever use to support second level ! - primary and secondary built both from timber ! - temporary timber supports put in place to support the load of the structure !

!

Flooring system: ! - joists and bearer system! - created from timber ! - load bearing structure!

Footing system: ! - concrete poured in situ, concrete slab and pad footings !

!

Roof system ! - hasn’t begun construction yet !

!

Materials ! - timber: used for timber framing and stud walls ! - in situ concrete: used for concrete slab and pad footings ! - steel: cold rolled steel using for bracing of steel walls and to join some floor and walls systems to another element ! - brick: used as a veneer for the exterior of the building

WEEK SIX: Learning Loop  Roof systems! - flat roof: pitch under 3 degrees ! - pitched and sloping roofs: pitch more then 3 degrees ! - concrete roofs: flat plates reinforced concrete e !

!

spanning spaces:! - Architecture becomes architect when you encloses a space ! - how to span in stone: corbel, arch (first use in brick), !

!

Metals ! - ferrous metals: iron metals, cheaper! - non ferrous metal: all other metals, less common, more expensive ! - alloys: combination of two metals, ferrous allots and non ferrous alloys ! - considerations: metals react with other metals by going up or taking on or another metal, galvanic series (anodic to cathodic), tendency to give up ions to other meatballs and corrode, reduce risk or corrosion, separate metals, coat layers in something like a layer of zinc (galvanised steel) ! - water related damage: oxidisation (rust) and corrosion, avoid prolonged exposure, seal metal with paint or enamel, chemical treatment to reduce risk !

Ferrous Metals! - iron: very reactive chemically (easily corrodes though rusting, good compressive strength, magnetic properties ! - wrought iron: heated and hammered to a desired shape (layout intensive)! - cast iron: 19th century, melted and proud into casts to mould, brittle, heavy ! - steel: alloy of iron and carbon, very strong, ! - structural steel (hot and cold rolled, reinforcing bars, steel sheeting (cladding and roofing) and Stainless steel alloys (chromium is the main alloying element, min 12%, the alloys milled ion coils, sheets, pleas, bars, wiring and tubing)! - framing! - hot rolled steel: elements gaped while metal is hot, primary structural elements, often protected from rusting and corroding by coatings, joints welted or bolted ! - cold formed steel: elects are folded to form sheets that have perilously been produced and cooled down, used as secondary structure, protected by hot dip processes (galvanisation), joints, screwed o bolted!

!

Non Ferrous Metals! - non iron metals: aluminium, copper, zinc, lead, tin, titanium, broze, brass
