As the Federation of Master Builders welcomed the reappointment of Lee Rowley, Brian Berry, Chief Executive of the FMB also stressed: “Local housebuilders offer a way forward to help increase the country’s housing supply, but to do so effectively means tackling the failing planning system which is under resourced and fails to allocate sufficient small sites for local housebuilders to build on.”

SPECIAL REPORT WOMEN IN THE TRADES

ALL CISTERNS

GO

PB’s Edward Kelly talks to Mica May, Head of Development at Stopcocks, the national franchise of women plumbers, about the story behind the organisation and how it is supporting women in the trades

(LtoR) Mica May, Head of Development with Hattie Hasan MBE, Founder and CEO of Stopcocks

topcocks was founded in 1990 by CEO Hattie Hasan, who embarked upon a career in the plumbing industry after starting out as a primary school teacher. She found herself drawn to plumbing as she’d always loved the idea of fixing things and the freedom that came with it. Mica has been with Stopcocks since 2014 and is the company’s Head of Development. She goes on to tell me more about Hattie and some of the early experiences that told her this wasn’t going to be the easiest career change for a woman in the late 1980s. Hattie studied her trade at the Leeds College of Building, where she became the first female trainee they’d had and even had to use the staff toilets as there were none for her.

S

I

12 JANUARY 2024 PROFESSIONAL BUILDER

Starting out Hattie began employing herself and trying to take on jobs in her local community in Leeds all while day releasing herself into college. Still struggling to get work, and ever conscious of bills that needed paying, she approached a city magazine and, not having a mass of spare cash lying around, asked if they needed any plumbing work done in exchange for an advert in their magazine. As luck would have it, they did need something done and agreed. It was from then on that Hattie’s phone started ringing and never stopped. Customers appreciated the way

Hattie worked and, as is the tried and tested method for a tradesperson, recommendations starting coming in. After years in the trade, and only growing in success, Hattie realised she’d never actually met another woman plumber. This was the beginning of the internet, so she started a website, and soon found other women plumbers contacting her, who she met up with across the country. Mica explains more: “funnily enough, hardly anybody else who were women working in the industry had met any other women doing it either. And so, that’s

012_PB_JAN24_Layout 1 05/12/2023 10:23 Page 13

when Hattie started thinking, ‘well, probably part of the reason there are so few of us is because there are so few of us’. Because, if you never see anybody like you doing something, then it doesn’t make you feel like you can do it.” “With all of society saying, ‘women don’t do things that mess up their nails’, and worse, of course, you have to be a very determined type of person to be able to continue on doing those sorts of things. So, as well as meeting other women, Hattie started looking at ways to enable other women to come into the industry.”

A helping hand Hattie’s desire to help other women in the trades manifested itself into what Stopcocks Women Plumbers is now, a Business Incubation Scheme – helping women become successful self-employed plumbers through use of the Stopcocks brand and business support service. Training courses, an engineer consultation service and DIY Club are all on the Stopcocks website too. The DIY Club is for all women householders, where exact home DIY tasks can be requested and then shown to the participant via a webinar. The Register of Tradeswomen was also set up by the company and began as a one stop shop, connecting householders with tradeswomen. This provided the team at Stopcocks with the data that, even without promotion, the demand for tradeswomen is more than three times the supply available. Having established that, the Register of Tradeswomen is now focussing on providing training in DIY to survivors of abuse, which has already run very successfully and is collaborating with a national network of women’s organisations to distribute that training.

Events Part of the organisation’s growth has led to an annual national event for tradeswomen in London that began in 2017. For the first time ever, there’s also a regional event taking place next month in February in Manchester, sponsored by Grundfos and AkzoNobel. The thought behind these events is to bring tradeswomen together. It’s no secret that

“We just need more people and women are very, very keen to get involved”

ours is an industry that can be incredibly lonely, and that brings mental health issues with it. We’ve certainly discussed the horrifying suicide figures amongst male construction workers before. One can only imagine how difficult it must be for women in the industry who don’t really ever see anyone else in the same position as they are. Having the opportunity for tradeswomen to meet up in this way seems invaluable. Mica tells me the events have spawned WhatsApp chats and several Facebook groups for tradeswomen, allowing for a space to discuss problems, ask for advice and even just know there are others out there in the same boat. Mica tells me that it is this work helping women isolated in the trades that got Hattie her MBE in the 2020 New Year’s Honours List. To finish off, I ask Mica how more

tradeswomen could help the construction industry as a whole. “It’s not a crowded market, and there’s a skills gap – there’s a massive, massive skills gap, in fact. When we talk to tradeswomen quite often, they are mystified why men in the industry see women coming into it as taking something away from them, because actually all it’s going to give them is a bit of headspace within the industry, because we just need more people and women are very, very keen to get involved in it.” IF YOU WANT TO HEAR MORE ABOUT STOPCOCKS AND LISTEN TO OUR INTERVIEW WITH MICA, CHECK OUT THE LATEST EPISODE OF THE PROFESSIONAL BUILDER PODCAST HERE: WWW.RDR.LINK/BAZ016 FOR MORE INFORMATION ON STOPCOCKS VISIT WWW.RDR.LINK/BAZ017

ADVERTISEMENT FEATURE

WHEN SPEED IS OF THE ESSENCE Speed, quality and efficiency are always the main drivers when it comes to keeping a customer happy but for a plasterer there is the added task of fitting several jobs into a busy schedule whilst still maintaining a healthy work / life balance.

P

lasterers are one of the most in demand trades, which is great for business, but does that make them burnt out trying to keep up with demand? And are they turning down smaller jobs that aren’t profitable because they involve too much waiting around? In this article, Ashley Wright, Head of Finish at British Gypsum, discusses the importance of using the right product, in the right way, to get the right results. There is a saying that ‘time is money’ and for plasterers this is especially true as small patch and repair jobs can sometimes put a spanner in the works as precious time slips away waiting for the plaster to set. Thistle MultiFinish takes between 90 to 120 minutes to set and while it’s the right product for larger areas, for smaller ones it can create a lot of waiting around. In the pursuit of speed, some plasterers look to increase their efficiency for small repair and patching jobs by turning to off-the-shelf ‘accelerator’ sachet packets in powder form that can be added to finishing plaster to create quicker drying times.

ThistlePro® FastSet Finish Even homemade remedies are being used, such as adding cement, and dirty or warm water. However, such methods can invalidate product warranties, especially for British Gypsum, as they have not been tested by them and are not standardised. It means there is a need to balance

I

14 JANUARY 2024 PROFESSIONAL BUILDER

speed and efficiency with quality, prompting British Gypsum to produce ThistlePro® FastSet Finish. This quicker setting finishing plaster provides an all-in-one bag that removes the gamble of adding unapproved accelerators or additives. It finishes in half the time of Thistle MultiFinish plaster and gives a smooth finish, ideal for patch work and repair jobs as well as smaller internal walls and ceilings, electrical patching, chimney breasts etc. and provides a durable base for applying decorative finishes. One 25kg bag of ThistlePro® FastSet Finish will cover approximately 10m2 and set in 60-70 minutes when used in accordance with the installation guidance. On site practices can vary, and finishing times are reduced by suction and extended by cold weather conditions. There is no need for additives, so the British Gypsum product guarantee applies, meaning in the unlikely event of a product failure, it will be repaired or replaced by British Gypsum, giving peace of mind. British Gypsum runs a Certified Plasterer Scheme, a group of experienced and established plasterers who have been in the trade for many years and have had their work assessed at one of British Gypsum’s training academies.

They were asked for their views on ThistlePro® FastSet Finish and whether it brought any meaningful benefit to their working lives. When asked what types of job they used it for, the majority said patching, small walls, ceilings, electrical chases, small and ‘on the way home’ jobs. However, it is worth noting that this fast setting plaster will not suit all jobs, especially if it is larger than 15m2 as it will start to set too quickly for a good finish.

Time Saving The plasterers also agreed that the product had improved their day-to-day work life, as smaller jobs were completed more quickly, meaning it saved time and was more efficient. Many stated that they were able to fit in extra jobs on the way home or on a weekend, and have earlier finishes with less time waiting around. Overall, it meant more jobs could be completed in a day. The need to fit in jobs while meeting customer deadlines and expectations can be a juggling act, but it cannot be done at the expense of quality. Using the right product in the right way means that a plasterer can tick off all three requirements; speed, quality and efficiency whilst also freeing up extra time for themselves. FOR FURTHER TECHNICAL INFORMATION ON THISTLEPRO® FASTSET FINISH AND ITS APPLICATION, PLEASE VISIT THE BRITISH GYPSUM WEBSITE AT WWW.RDR.LINK/BAZ018

ABOUT TIME If running your company means you’re clocking up more hours than you should then consider ToolTime, an app that relieves the burden of business admin from small building companies. o you’ve just finished on site for the day, and there’s just about time to drop in on another potential client to price a job. Then it’s back home and, when the kids are safely ensconced in bed, you can start on quotes and invoicing. Sound familiar? We all know there are far too many owners of small building firms who are sacrificing precious family and leisure hours at the altar of running a business. The good news is that there’s now digital help at hand, with an app that can claw back considerable time, improve your productivity and present a more professional image to new and existing clients. ToolTime is on a mission to achieve all of the above and more. So how does it work? Both an office web app and mobile worker app in one, the latter is designed for a specific employee in the field – and will eliminate any paperwork – whilst the former is your access to all of ToolTime’s functionality, including scheduling, quoting, invoicing and your day-to-day

S

business admin. Both are available on any device, whether laptop or tablet, and user-friendliness has been the watchword throughout its development. For a builder, the journey begins with a full, live demo that explains the features and functions to the business owner and their team. At the same time, ToolTime can support the transfer of all a client’s data – from customer details to service

history and materials catalogue from Excel into the software. The app lists customers, projects, and a calendar whilst a catalogue section will include all of the materials, tools and products you use on jobs, including the pricing. It is from this information that accurate and fully customisable quotes and invoices are created, transforming these invariably onerous tasks into jobs that can be completed in minutes. Moreover, thanks to the mobile app, staff management is equally at your fingertips. Using this, workers can log their hours on a job to automatically generate time sheets and givie you full visibility of your team’s location at any one time. Every piece of documentation for each of a builder’s clients exists in separate and easily accessible folders, with the location identified through Google Maps. Any initial appointment is booked within the system, with an employee assigned, and SMS reminder for the client set up at no additional charge. Indeed, it’s not just

SMS but also email that’s available through ToolTime, and all that correspondence is then recorded. Individual projects that may have been undertaken for that one client over a considerable time frame are organised in sub folders, with all the relevant quotes and invoices. For the field worker, the mobile app is the epitome of simplicity. Focusing on appointments and time tracking. Appointments are divided into planned, which are those that are yet to be done, documented, which have already been undertaken, and overdue. Relevant notes, including work duration and photography can be recorded, with services that need to be quoted for, including measurements, then sent back to the web app. The next step is quoting – a process which is up to 90% automated. Utilising the previously uploaded pricing from the catalogue, values will automatically appear for each item entered, which can

then be manually adjusted if required. As a result, a PDF file incorporating the trade business’ logo and company details, can very quickly be generated and emailed to the potential client. That combination of mobile and office app will radically reduce the time taken to accurately price jobs. Within the invoicing function, staged payments can be logged, but the functions don’t end there. ToolTime Pay allows the customer to scan a QR code provided and make immediate payments, for example,

obviating the need for them to provide bank details. Finally, if it’s longer-term performance you’re looking to interrogate, every piece of data stored on the platform can be immediately exported to an Excel spreadsheet. This can be particularly useful for end of year accounts, for instance, or when analysing what parts of the business can be made profitable and where costs savings can be made. This job management platform was first launched in 2019 and can already boast over 10,000 trade users across Europe, all serviced by more than 100 employees. Indeed, this isn’t just a faceless tech company where you’re left with nothing but a piece of software for company. Instead, every single account holder is provided with dedicated customer service personnel who are on hand to address any queries in minutes. QUICK SMART Professional Builder visits Quickslide’s extensive West Yorkshire manufacturing hub

f you’re a professional builder you want the products you’ve specified to arrive on site exactly when you need them. That order needs to be complete and to the most consistent level of quality that can be achieved. All sounds very simple, right? Of course, if you are a professional builder you’ll equally know that it doesn’t quite work that way on every project. When things do go awry what inevitably follows is the snowball effect of tradespeople waiting in line to get on the job, with awkward conversations with a client about delays to the build schedule on the horizon. Find someone who can deliver on all of the above, however, and they are very much your friend, but achieving that level of service and reliability demands an awful lot of hard work and investment. One West Yorkshire-based window and door manufacturer is doing just that and has everything in place to supply just what the trades need. So just what goes into making sure that your pristine bi fold doors, casement or sash windows, in just the right colour for

I

your customer, get to you in a timely fashion? The simple answer is a very well honed operation and Quickslide’s Brighouse home is very much a case in point. It is here that a significant investment, combined with an everwatchful eye on productivity and quality produces an enviable end result.

Customer service Wherever you look on the factory floor, every screen and each process is unique to Quickslide as a business and the product of its internal development team, with customer service the only driver.

That’s a principle that extends from the IT system – which has designed out much of the paperwork – right down to the blue carts that deliver multiple pieces of glass to the right workstation and were specially made by a local firm to a bespoke specification. Taking pride of place is a new £1.71 million machining centre from German manufacturer, Schirmer, delivered to Quickslide’s exact specification. What it promises is an exact product every time, with repeatable quality and drastically reduced levels of offcuts and waste. Managing Director, Ben Weber, explains:

“A vertical sliding window is complex, perhaps more so than any other type of window frame. It has always required precision manufacturing, and this equipment now allows us to bring a lot of the preparatory processes online enabling us to produce consistent quality and output all the time.” Ben continued: “Quickslide was certainly pioneering in the development of the affordable replacement vertical sliding sash window and, as such, we have continually developed and improved the authenticity of our frames over the last 20 years. This is vitally important for an audience that places a great deal of emphasis on historical accuracy, whilst the windows must also comply with the latest Building Regulations and performance standards. The Schirmer allows us to deal with all these factors, improving quality whilst boosting throughput and therefore lowering lead times. “I once calculated – or attempted to calculate – the number of VS design configurations that we offer and without including bespoke colour-bonding we’re looking at more than a trillion. Our designs and options are ever more complex and the Schirmer means we can do all of these configurations without adding to the lead time with the confidence that we have mastered the art of getting it right, fast and every time. I believe that we already offer the fastest

VS lead time in the industry but can do so whilst also offering the greatest choice of design and specification options.”

Increased capacity By comparison with conventional casement windows, some processes in the manufacture of VS frames are considerably more intense, such as fully mechanical joints and the inclusion of the new slim mid-rail. These complex and labour-intensive options have previously required capacity limitation due to how difficult and labour intensive they are to mass manufacture, but this has now been lifted with the new machining centre, says Ben cautiously: “It is still early days, but we have achieved a capacity increase in true heritage frames which we expect to see increase further as we get better acquainted with the machine and it’s operation.” “Better material utilisation on steel reinforcement has already been achieved with the switch to 6-metre lengths rather than cut sizes with steel optimisation directly matching profile optimisation of profiles, which is better than 96% plus.

We have also trialled the use of RCM [recycled composite material] reinforcement and it works very well. The RCM is around 35% of the cost of steel, is sustainable, is as effective and runs through the saw as usual and suitable for windows on the smaller size without compromising on performance or quality. The flexibility of the Schirmer allows us to trial and experiment freely.” The Quickslide company ethos is about providing a platform of opportunity for its clients and the industry at large. “We’re a long-term partner business and our customer care provision is extensive,” enthuses Adrian Barraclough. “In addition, we invest extensively in R&D and quality control.” It’s an attitude which is epitomised by Quickslide’s work with SME housebuilders and developers, encouraging differentiation on their properties by moving beyond white windows, for example. Help is provided to help those clients to consider bi folds, composite doors, and a mix of sash and casement on the front and back of their homes. Housebuilders also need to understand the product in order to install it properly and that requires a close relationship with the supplier including visits from Quickslide service engineers. Indeed it is abundantly clear that the watchword at Quickslide is quality, with every product that makes its journey through the factory subject to constant inspection. All that ensures that it is delivering for the trades in every sense. FOR FURTHER INFORMATION ON QUICKSLIDE VISIT WWW.RDR.LINK/BAZ026

YEAR ROUND Ben Brocklesby, Director at Origin, looks ahead to 2024

mbarking on 2024 fills us with optimism, as we eagerly anticipate the promise of fresh opportunities to drive growth. It’s an exhilarating time for reflection, goal-setting, investment in genuine industry-leading initiatives and optimising our processes to ensure maximum efficiency. Exciting times! Reflecting on our performance in 2023, despite prevailing uncertainty, we achieved new heights which are allowing us to go into 2024 in a strong position. In the New Year, we pledge to persist in innovation and continue our unwavering support for our exceptional Partners.

E

Future Homes Standard Our main focus next year will be preparing for the Future Homes Standard (2025). With the government’s plans to drastically improve the energy efficiency of new homes, our in-house R&D team has been very busy in 2023. We were lucky enough to get to share a sneak peek with some of our Partners back in the Autumn, and the positive feedback was overwhelming. Whilst embarking on this significant undertaking has not been without its challenges, we cannot wait to share with you the new suite of products they’ve created. Together, they create the perfect package for any project, whether you’re working on a new build or an existing property. Excitement builds for our improved manufacturing processes too. In 2023, we

undertook a significant investment in our supply chain which will further transform the way we operate as a company and the calibre of product we can offer the market. We’ve always been the best in class, but this is about to be pushed even further. Watch this space. 2023 also saw emerging homeowner trends which present opportunities for those working throughout the supply chain. Amidst a struggling housing market of falling house prices and high mortgage rates, many are opting to improve rather than move. And with the Chancellor announcing a streamlined process for

making planning applications during the Autumn Statement, we anticipate more of this in 2024. Anticipating a fruitful 2024, we eagerly welcome both existing and new Partners into the Origin family. With the introduction of new products, enhanced support initiatives, and measures to enhance accessibility, we are poised for what promises to be our most robust year to date. TRAIN TO GAIN James Downey, UK Training Manager at BFT Automation, explores the value of training at all stages of a tradesperson’s career, including advice for managers in identifying training needs and how to overcome common barriers to pursuing training opportunities.

t’s easy to assume that training is primarily for builders and installers in the early stages of learning their trade, but in recent years there’s been a growing recognition that anyone at any point in their career can benefit from the chance to expand their skills. When a builder or installer hasn’t been formally trained in how to use the products they rely on, they can sometimes run into challenges during installations in new and different environments. It’s often the case that learning some simple measures can make such processes far easier, but it’s hard to gain that level of knowledge from a product manual alone. These kind of scenarios can happen throughout an installer’s career, especially when new products are launched or current products have been improved, and some simple training can make a big difference. Similarly, it’s important to keep on top of new regulations and guidelines and the implications they can have on an installer’s day-to-day work.

The value of upskilling You might be looking to diversify into a new area and expand your services, or you might manage a team who could benefit from the chance to learn something new or refresh their skills. That’s certainly something I see through my own work as a trainer – it’s not just apprentices or recently qualified installers who are coming forward to boost their knowledge. For example, someone may be very experienced in installing automatic gates,

but hasn’t had any experience in working with bollards and can see the value in learning this skill as a means of expanding their business offering. Sometimes they may have been inspired to explore a completely different path. I recently worked with a tree surgeon who observed installers fitting gates and thought it might be something he could do. He’s now not only fitting automatic gates but is making his own posts from the trees he’s had to take down to hold intercoms.

028_PB_JAN24_Layout 1 05/12/2023 10:28 Page 29

Tackling common obstacles Returning to a classroom environment can feel intimidating for some, especially if they’re at the stage in their careers where their time in formal education has long passed. They may be worried about showing any gaps in their knowledge and whether they’ll be able to keep up with the pace of learning on a course. With this in mind, it’s important to look for providers who offer a learning environment which works for you. A relaxed, friendly approach will help everyone taking part to feel more supported. Above all, training shouldn’t follow too rigid a format. While an installer, or their manager, may have identified specific skills they need to be trained on, it’s important to allow flexibility for trainees to explore areas where they’d like to develop. Training should move at the pace of the individual, so that those who need more time to practice their skills are given that chance. For example, at BFT Automation, we offer courses at three levels, with an

introduction to automation and products at Level 1, advanced engineers’ courses at Level 2, plus a specialist training level including anti-terrorism bollards and pedestrian speed gates. We ask applicants to flag particular areas they’d like to cover, but once we get going, I tend to find that trainees will often ask about other areas too so we can spend some time on those as well. After training we offer an open door for learners to keep in touch with us for any further support they need in consolidating what they’ve learned once a course is complete. Wherever you might be in your career, the value of learning something new, or addressing any knowledge gaps, should be embraced. There are often opportunities for installers to make the most of new developments in technology and to keep pace with demand for new specialisms. Whatever the particular need might be, investing some time and effort on training can pay dividends.”

extensions, conversions & garden rooms

ELEVATE THE SPACE Colin Wells, Head of Technical at Keylite Roof Windows, looks at the top five considerations when creating a well-lit, functional and habitable attic space. n recent years, the trend of converting loft spaces has seen a remarkable surge in popularity. This surge comes down to a dramatic shift in people’s lifestyles. For example, a change in working patterns with an increasing number of individuals choosing to work from home. As people spend more time within their own four walls, homeowners are looking to loft conversions as an affordable means to create additional living and working spaces. Beyond the immediate advantages of extra space, loft conversions offer longterm benefits. Not only can they enhance quality of living, but they can also significantly increase the value of a property. On average, a well-executed loft conversion can boost a property’s value by a substantial 21 per cent. This becomes a crucial consideration in the

I

current fluctuating housing market. These spaces, which are typically dark and unusable, can be completely transformed with the correct specification and installation of pitched roof windows or skylights.

WHAT TO CONSIDER? 1. Natural light Roof windows are an excellent source of natural light, making any loft space brighter and more inviting. Contractors should consider the orientation of the roof and the placement of windows to maximise natural light throughout the day, picking a place with optimum sunlight is great for reducing the need for artificial light. Large expanses of glass and roof windows which allow natural light to flood into “room-in-roof” spaces are always going to enhance the kerb appeal of a property, but it’s the quality of finish and

the extra details that often make a loft conversion project stand out.

2. Roof pitch and size If you’re installing roof windows, then it will be important to consider how these align with the whole building envelope. Products that protrude from the building may look cumbersome compared to those with a flush or less obvious finish. Every Keylite roof window is recessed as standard, sitting lower in the roof than other windows on the market. The recessed fit is achieved with standard flashings, enhancing the overall appearance of the roof and improving the thermal performance of the window.

3. Thermal comfort Roof windows are normally installed with a 20mm gap around the edge to allow for adjustments and ease of installation. This

I

PROFESSIONAL BUILDER JANUARY 2024 33

033_PB_JAN24_Layout 1 05/12/2023 10:30 Page 34

extensions, conversions & garden rooms

gap should be filled in after installation, otherwise it can contribute toward heat loss. If this area is not insulated, then this can lead to cold bridging and condensation on the frame of the roof windows, which can eventually lead to mould growth. Some manufacturers have designed additional products that reduce the possibility of this occurring, ensuring products are designed in such a way that contractors don’t have to consider this gap. These features help eliminate thermal bridging, which reduces the risk of non-compliance and delivers a renovation that is closer to the expected energy performance. One such feature is Keylite’s patented Integrated Expanding Thermal Collar, which ensures the thermal integrity of the window and roof is as designed, thus removing the reliance on contractors to fit an additional thermal collar and helping achieve Approved Document L requirements. It also improves airtightness and Psi Values for SAP.

4. Breath of fresh air With several changes made to Building Regulations in England and Wales last year, including ‘Approved Document F: Ventilation’, builders have been looking for products that take the headache out of compliance by ensuring they meet current requirements. Now, when contractors install new windows in homes, trickle vents must be installed, or sufficient background ventilation must be provided by other means. The latest Part F requirements for background ventilation are supported through Keylite’s cleverly designed top

handle, allowing for controlled trickled ventilation when the window is fully closed and securely locked. The National House-Building Council (NHBC) will not accept other window types that provide background ventilation by being latched in the partially opened position. Thanks to StopDigging UK’s Ground Screws, a garden room project in Walton-on-Thames proved to be a less disruptive and more sustainable build.

MAGIC GARDEN n the picturesque town of Walton-onThames, a groundbreaking approach to garden room construction has left its mark, setting a new standard for eco-friendly, non-disruptive building solutions. This case study delves into the creation of a stunning garden room in collaboration with Second Space Garden Rooms, highlighting the use of StopDigging UK’s ground screws. Traditionally, constructing a garden room involved significant disruption to the surrounding environment, extensive use of concrete, and often raised environmental concerns. However, a project in Walton On Thames sought to break away from these conventions, prioritising sustainability and minimal disruption. Unlike traditional methods, StopDigging UK’s ground screws eliminate the need for extensive excavation and concrete foundations. Instead, they provide a secure and stable base by screwing directly into the ground, minimising the project’s environmental impact and significantly reducing disruption to the landscape. One of the key advantages of these ground screws is their eco-friendly nature. By avoiding the use of concrete, the project

I

in Walton On Thames showcased a commitment to sustainability. The reduction in carbon footprint and preservation of the natural landscape were key considerations in choosing this solution. Greg Wilkes, Director of StopDigging in Greater London commented on the environmental impact: “We are proud to offer a sustainable alternative to traditional foundation methods. Our ground screws not only provide stability but also contribute to a greener, more environmentally conscious construction process.” StopDigging has become the first ground screw company in the UK to be awarded the prestigious BBA certificate. In partnership with Second Space Garden Rooms, whose proficiency lies in crafting tailor-made garden rooms, the project not only met but surpassed the client’s expectations, emphasising a commitment to both excellence and sustainability. The creation of a garden room using ground screws stands as a testament to the evolution of construction practices towards sustainability and efficiency. The project showcases how innovative solutions can redefine traditional processes, leaving a positive impact on the environment and the local community.

t first glance the hottest year on record, a dearth of skilled tradespeople and property owners’ insatiable appetite for adding aesthetic oomph by converting an ancient building into a home may seem to have little in common. But on closer inspection it seems that one, two or all three of these factors are behind the curiosity of many a builder to find out how multifoil insulation and membranes will either makes their lives easier, help them do their job more quickly or enable them to comply with changing Building Regulations. So, if you are looking at taking on any extension or conversion work this year, you may want to find out what all the fuss is about. First, let’s talk George Clarke, he of the prolific TV presence and passion for helping homeowners realise their dreams. In recent years no fewer than three of the projects featured in his Old House New Home and Remarkable Renovations series have been insulated with such materials. The most recent saw owners of an Edwardian semi in Hove convert their loft into a massive home cinema,

bedroom and shower room, which they insulated with three products from the Actis Hybrid range – honeycomb style insulation Hybris, insulating vapour control layer H Control Hybrid and insulating breather membrane Boost R Hybrid – in order to vastly improve the home’s previous poor E-rated thermal

performance. Owner Jasmin Robertson said: “The Actis products were lightweight and easy to use. Due to being easy to cut to size and install, the contractors were able to get this part of the job done in really good time. We were working to a ridiculously tight timeline to fit with the filming schedule, so the elements that helped speed things up were massively appreciated! Now, having lived in the house for a couple of years, I can vouch for the fact that the Actis products do the job well. Even during the cold winter of 2020/21 we didn’t need to turn on the radiators in the loft.”

Coach house conversion

Actis regional specification manager Amaret Chahal demonstrates how to cut Hybris

A coach house conversion in Staffordshire, which featured in George Clarke’s Remarkable Renovations, also received the Actis Hybrid treatment. The project saw builders create a timber frame within the original shell of the building, both for structural reasons and to allow the installation of Hybris and H Control Hybrid. And they removed the original roof, installed new roof timbers, and insulated it with 75mm Actis Hybris, H

Control Hybrid and Boost R Hybrid. Another Remarkable Renovations star was a Northamptonshire village school converted by architectural designer Stuart Ellis and his wife Theresa with help from their builder son Jamie. Around 370 sq m of 50mm and 33 sq m of 105mm Hybris, 180 sq m of H Control Hybrid and 225sq m of Boost R Hybrid Roof were used in the roof and walls of the existing property and the roof of the new build element. This achieved a Uvalue of 0.18 /m2K in both the extension and existing roof and 0.25/ /m2K in the walls of the original part of the property. The Hybris range has also been used on many unusual projects, such as a Warwickshire water tower conversion which is now a popular Airbnb holiday rental.

Multiple uses More modest projects are also the beneficiaries of the Actis approach. One long-term Actis enthusiast, carpenter Chris Brooks, who has been working with the products for around two decades, used the Hybrid range when adding a kitchen extension on the back of his Northamptonshire cottage, for reroofing a house whose roof caught fire when a mouse nibbled through an electrical cable and in a stable conversion. And a Cornish couple, creating an extra floor in their former bungalow, loved

Actis Hybris and Boost R Hybrid were used to insulate the converted loft in a George Clarke-featured Edwardian semi in Hove

using the products so much they even made a YouTube video showing how to install Hybris and HControl Hybrid. As well as the well-known Hybrid range – whose Hybris component is Cradle to Cradle Certified Bronze for its sustainability credentials – builders are also turning to Actis’ newest product Eolis HC. This has been designed to enable builders and roofers to reduce the number of steps required to achieve an impressive U-value as well as airtightness in roofs. The revolutionary Triplex technology at its core ensures installation is not only twice as quick as traditional alternatives but is also aimed at transforming the loft and barn conversion sector where headroom is at a premium due to shallow

rafters, not least because it doesn’t usually need the 25mm air gap required under BS 5250. And, with Part O of the Building Regulations obliging architects to limit unwanted solar gains – and provide a way to remove heat from residential dwellings – the Hybrid range and Eolis HC have an important role to play in helping buildings stay cool, with Eolis HC reflecting 95% of infrared radiation. IT’S TIME TO FLEX! Underfloor heating is an ideal heating solution for extensions and conservatories. Professional Builder follows an installation of a Grant Uflex UFH system from design to handover. nderfloor heating systems have been a common fixture in households for quite some time but in recent years their popularity has seen a substantial surge. A wet underfloor heating system transforms the entire floor into a surface that can radiate heat uniformly upward, ensuring even distribution of warmth throughout the space or room. This stands in sharp contrast to radiators, which rely on convection currents to disperse heat in a room, often resulting in cold spots or drafts. Underfloor heating is particularly wellsuited to conservatories and extensions

U

STEP 1: Place the order with a local merchant referencing the unique Design Project Number supplied by Grant UK’s Design Team. When Grant UK receive the confirmed order, their Team will then transfer the project list into a scaled underfloor heating schematic using a CAD programme. A PDF of this schematic is issued with appropriate pipe cutting list and flow rates and an A3 hard copy accompanies the order. Also included in this drawings pack are the wiring and plumbing schematics for the system as well as the setup/commissioning information.

because it can be integrated during the floor installation process. These spaces are often neglected in the winter due to their tendency to be too cold. However, with underfloor heating, a conservatory can become a consistently warm area throughout the year. Installing an underfloor heating system in a conservatory offers the same benefits as in other rooms, including straightforward installation, enhanced energy efficiency and a sleek, unobtrusive appearance. Options like the Uflex MINI low-profile underfloor heating system can be retrofitted in existing conservatories, while systems like the Uflex underfloor heating

STEP 3: Cut and lay the floor insulation over the entire floor area butting up to the edge insulation, then tape all adjoining sections of floor insulation to prevent screed slipping through the joints.

STEP 2: Once you have your design and received your UFH order on site, prepare the required floor area and fix the edge insulation strip continuously around all internal and external wall edges. STEP 4: Lay a membrane on top of the floor insulation (this is only required if using a liquid screed) and stick the edge insulation skirt onto the insulation board or membrane as required.

system, which is integrated into the floor, can be installed in new conservatories. This Grant Uflex underfloor heating (UFH) installation shows the process of fitting the system from start to finish and demonstrates how manufacturers support installers with their UFH projects. For instance, you can send the initial plans of your project to designrequest@grantuk.com and then Grant UK’s in-house Design Team will complete a heat load calculation and produce a formal quotation which lists the bill of materials for the installation. Here is what happens once the quotation is approved:

STEP 5: Using the design supplied by Grant UK, mark the system layout onto the prepared floor area and measure the maximum length of the Uflex pipe required for each loop to ensure even distribution across the floor area.

038_PB_JAN24_Layout 1 05/12/2023 10:32 Page 39

PUMP ACTION

STEP 6: Fit the manifold in the required location as per the design specification. Once fitted, thread the first pipe coil end behind the return manifold and connect onto the manifold flow port.

STEP 7: Using the marked floor area, start to lay the pipe so that the flow direction is from the manifold to the coldest area of the room first. Clip the Uflex pipe into place using a stapler working back towards the return port of the manifold to complete each loop.

STEP 8: Once the pipework is complete and each loop pressure tested, a screed can then be laid up to a thickness of 75mm depending on the screed type being used, and then left to dry for the required time. The controls can then be installed, and actuators fitted on to the manifold. The heat source can then be connected, and the underfloor system commissioned.

Want to find out more about heat pumps and their installation? The technology has long been identified as a renewable energy source that can contribute to our net zero ambitions, and they’re a lucrative potential business opportunity for the skilled trades. Professional Builder explored the topic in a recent podcast where we put the questions to Stuart McWhinnie of Grant UK. To listen to the episode use the rdr link: WWW.RDR.LINK/BAZ048

PRE SCHOOL

Peter Wilson, brand manager for Setcrete floor levelling compounds, explains how and why the preparation of the subfloor is essential in delivering the perfect flooring installation.

efore a floorcovering is installed, it is essential that the subfloor base is sound, dry and free from contaminants, such as oil, paint or old adhesive residues (left behind following the removal of a previous floorcovering). Inspection of the subfloor will quickly establish if the base is cracking or flaking, in which case the affected areas need to be treated or, in severe cases, removed and replaced. Contamination is most likely on a conversion, especially if the space was previously used as a garage. If spillages or grease are present, these need to be removed mechanically, for example, using a grinder. With a new screed, there is often a thin surface film or crust formed by a mixture of water, cement and fine screed particles that dries out and settles on the surface as the screed cures. Known as laitance, this thin crust must be removed before proceeding.

B

Dealing with damp Excess subfloor moisture is the biggest cause of flooring failure bar none. In older properties it is usually caused by the absence of a damp proof course (which only became mandatory in the 1960s) or by water ingress for outside. In newer buildings it is mainly the result of residual construction moisture, with a typical subfloor screed requiring around one day per millimetre of depth to fully dry out. If left unchecked and untreated before a floorcovering is installed, this moisture will rise to the surface of the subfloor

I

40 JANUARY 2024 PROFESSIONAL BUILDER

where it will attack adhesives used to install the floorcovering and damage the floorcovering itself. This can, for example, cause vinyl tiles to lift and wooden floors to warp and promote harmful mould growth. It is not possible to ascertain the degree of subfloor moisture by touch or smell. The only reliable way of testing for it is by using a handheld moisture meter or, preferably a digital hygrometer. If the moisture level is above 75% relative humidity (RH), or 65% if a wood floor is to be installed, a remedial treatment is required. Fortunately, these are readily available and quick to apply. A high-performance liquid, epoxy-based rapid set DPM system requires only a single application and will cure in around three hours, providing

protection up to 98% RH. Once the subfloor has been tested for moisture and, if required, a DPM has been applied, it is ready to received a levelling compound to create a super smooth surface that will optimise the appearance of the floorcovering.

Smooth work Often subfloor screeds are not super smooth and a levelling compound should be applied before any floorcovering is installed. This is particularly important for thin, resilient floorcoverings, such as luxury vinyl tiles (LVTs), where even the smallest blemish in the subfloor will show though the floorcovering and compromise its finished appearance.

040_PB_JAN24_Layout 1 05/12/2023 10:33 Page 41

If the subfloor is a standard sand/cement screed, a general-purpose levelling compound should be OK to use, but sometimes a specialist levelling compound is required. For example, if time is tight, fast-track levelling compounds are available, which are ‘walk on’ hard after just 30 minutes and ready to receive a floorcovering in as little as two hours. Alternatively, if an extension subfloor has been installed at a significantly different level to an adjoining room (say over 20mm difference), but the intention is to run the flooring seamlessly through both areas, a deep base levelling compound can raise the lower level by up to 50 mm in a single application. These products can also be used to fill in channels in the subfloor where an internal wall has been removed. If the floor is semi exposed to the exterior elements, which could be the case if converting a garage into a home gym or a studio (or even you just want to upgrade an existing garage floor), an exterior grade levelling compound will be

required. With this option, the levelling compound can also be left uncovered and used as a wearing course. Exterior grade levelling compounds are also useful for levelling a particularly uneven damp subfloor prior to the application of a DPM, which could otherwise ‘pool’ in indentations and require more of the DPM to achieve complete coverage. The DPM will then need to be capped with a thin layer of levelling compound.

Once the levelling compound has set and cured, the subfloor is ready to receive the floorcovering, with the perfect surface texture to create a strong bond with the flooring adhesive. Not only will the finished installation benefit from optimised aesthetics, it will retain its appearance and integrity throughout its lifetime. ROOM & BOARD The Encon Group reviews specialist plasterboards and the benefits to builders in an evolving market.

tandard plasterboard is often seen as a solid all-round solution for refurbishment projects. But with changes in legislation and the evolving needs of homeowners, specialist boards and their suitability to specific project requirements are increasingly important considerations.

S

The right board for the job Traditionally for home improvement projects, contractors visit their local merchant and will select the materials they regularly purchase to complete the job. However, legislative change and new regulatory standards means contractors need to review their approach to product selection, so projects meet current performance requirements backed by valid certification. It’s important to also consider shifts in homeowner lifestyles as they continue to adapt their total living space to suit family life and profession. It can be a challenge to know which products provide the best performance for the project in hand or for the changing needs of the homeowner. Often, it’s just easier to stick with what you know. Standard plasterboard, for example, is often perceived as a commodity fix-all. Builders are likely to buy the same board and accessories for an extension as they would for a new kitchen, bathroom or partition wall and make it work.

Specialist v Standard While standard board remains a versatile option for many RMI projects, the benefits of specialist products for given applications must be considered too. Knauf’s range of specialist boards are designed with characteristics to meet specific project needs. ● Knauf Moisture Panel contains additives in the board that makes it ideal for bathrooms or kitchens. Moisture Panel also gives a better finish

I

42 JANUARY 2024 PROFESSIONAL BUILDER

than standard board, ensures less snags like tile popping, and is more cost effective. Standard board would usually require extra components for moisture protection, and the contractor may need to return to rectify issues. ● Knauf Soundshield Plus combines effective acoustic control with impact and fire resistance. With the need or desire for quieter space in the home, achieving the right acoustics is important as homeowners look to balance work and family in the same building. ● Knauf Fire Panel contains additives that enhance the fire-resistant properties within the board and provide superior fire protection over standard board and peace of mind. With fire as one of the major causes of damage within our homes, fire protection is perhaps the most critical area to note, greatly influenced by new regulations and a determined focus on culture change in building safety.

Knowledge & Confidence Moving from products that are most familiar to you can be daunting, but leaning on the knowledge and support of

manufacturers and your local merchant will help identify the right solutions for your project. Knauf provides training and support through dedicated technical teams, as well technical data sheets, test certification and specification expertise, all of which are also accessible via their stockist and distribution partners. Training covers common issues encountered in specific applications and guidance on which board is best suited to deliver the required results.

Encon Specialist Distributor The Encon Group is the UK leading independent distributor of building solutions, with specialist distribution divisions across the Group. TOOLS & EQUIPMENT

Professional Builder looks at a class of tool that’s ideal for the combination of Bosch BiTURBO and ProCORE18V battery The Bosch BiTURBO system was developed to operate in harmony with the ProCORE18V batteries and it was precisely in the realm of heavy-duty applications – such as mitre saws – that it is was designed to find its home. In this class of machine there’s an 8in., or 216mm (GCM 18V-216 D), 10in., or 254mm (GCM 18V-254 D), and 12in., or 305mm GCM 18V-305 GDC all available. Each of these tools are powered by a single ProCORE18V battery, complemented by a powerful brushless motor and high-quality accessories. If you take the GCM 18V-216 DC as an example, at only 15kg, it is a genuinely portable tool. The Bosch Expert blade with 48 teeth provides a smooth finish on the workpiece, and the mitre adjustment for bevel cuts is quick and easy. Overall, the combination of ProCORE18V battery and BITURBO technology makes it feel like a 240V unit.

HIGH AND HIGH AND MITRE MITRE

Cutting remarks The 12in. (305mm) GCM 18V-305 GDC has a cutting capacity of 104mm – and 120mm with a spacer – which allows it to handle deep material. The unit is equipped with a space saving glide arm, which means it can be positioned right up against a wall, is dual bevel, and fully connected. Delivering power equal to a 2,000W corded tool, it’s most suited to the 12-amp hr ProCORE18V battery although, in common with all Bosch 18V machines it will run on any of its 18V batteries. In order to demonstrate its power, Chris Murray, Digital Power Tool Training Manager for Bosch Professional, took to 100mm of oak with the GCM 18V305 GDC and you could easily be cutting material all day on one fully charged ProCORE18V power source. There’s also a compact and versatile GTS 18V-216 Cordless Table Saw in the range with a maximum cutting height of 70mm and 635mm rip capacity. End users have reported that this tool – although

I

44 JANUARY 2024 PROFESSIONAL BUILDER

not designed for the application – is accurate enough for cabinetry. This saw is robust, compact and easy to transport, and a stand is also available. When using it on site with the ProCORE18V 12 Ah battery it would be easy to mistake it for a corded tool. Everything you need is stored on the table saw and the blade change is an easy job. Circular saws are by their nature energy intensive but here again the BiTURBO concept is up to the task, and there are a number of options in this class of machine, with 165mm blades through to 190mm and a plunge saw that runs from a 140mm blade.

Taking the plunge The last of these, the GKT 18V-52 GC Cordless Plunge Saw is equal to a 1,620W corded machine and is a very user-

friendly piece of kit. Each bevel degree is clearly marked and locked in with a small knob at the front and back of the saw, whilst the ergonomic position of the handle lets the saw do the work through the material. Moreover, a compact design means that there’s the convenience of a 10mm minimum distance between the wall and the saw blade. Professional Builder continues its illuminating journey through the JCB Work Lights range

In our December edition we covered some of the JCB Work Lights solutions that will brighten a builder’s day and you can recap on the previous products we reviewed in part one by visiting the PB website at WWW.RDR.LINK/BAZ064 For luminosity in a lightweight package then get to grips with the USB-C rechargeable JCB-WL-PALM, a powerful 1,000 lumens inspection and work light that sits very nicely in the hand. Indeed, at

fantastic

just 140kg you’ll hardly feel you have a hold and, thanks to a fold out hanging hook and magnet, you don’t actually have to. A built in USB powerbank means you can charge mobile devices, including your smartphone. A secure and independent fixing from which to shine is, in fact, a recurring theme of the JCB Work Lights collection, none more so than with the JCB-WLTUFFCLAMP. The clue is in the name, and we made use of its limpet-like hold on the metal racking in the garage conversion we were working on, but it will equally take a firm grip to scaffolding, doorframes, and much more. From there, it will rotate through 360° spreading stepless dimmable light from 150 to 1,500lumen.

These durable, multi-functional, and genuinely portable units come together as an extensive range for every eventuality and all of those qualities are exemplified in the JCB-WLTUFFXONE. If you want robust then this light was actually driven over by a truck and still remained in working order, whilst its IP68 rating means it can be fully submersed in water. There’s two settings – 1,500 and 750 lumen – each of which can banish the gloom from either the security of a magnetic stand or mounted on a tripod. Given the waterproof credentials plumbers could find it a home but, with the added convenience of a rechargeable battery, this is a solid performer for any number of trades.

Everyone should have a good headtorch in the van and the JCB-HTXTRA has the advantage of also functioning as a work light, with a wide-angle beam in both applications. We found it sat comfortably on the head and, again, there’s a rechargeable battery. With two settings of 260 and 130lumen it will dispel the dark in exactly the direction you need it to, with an added feature making it genuinely hands-free at every turn. Thanks to a wave sensor simply wave a hand in front of the headtorch to switch it off or on.

8TH IN THE SERIES

POWER HITTER In this instalment of our series of buyers guides for the power tools you might need in your van, Makita provides advice on what to look for when choosing a high-powered, high-performance combi drill.

When taking on jobs such as window and door replacement and repairs, that include many different tasks, the versatility of the tools in your kit can make a real difference. Every professional tradesperson will be familiar with the trusty combi drill as the go-to for many everyday tasks. However, for those more demanding tasks, professionals have generally needed to reach for a more specialist machine such as a rotary hammer. One way that professionals can benefit from both the versatility of a combi drill and the performance required for heavyduty tasks is to look for one of the new

I

46 JANUARY 2024 PROFESSIONAL BUILDER

generation of powerful cordless tools, such as those from the Makita 40VMax XGT range. However, there are a number of factors to consider when choosing the right product.

HIGH PERFORMANCE COMBI DRILLS

Power and performance Although offering greater flexibility, productivity and safety, by eliminating the trip hazard of cables, there has traditionally been a limit to the performance of cordless tools. However, advances in tool and battery technology have increased both the power and runtime that is possible. This has been enhanced further with the

development of high capacity cordless platforms such as XGT. One of the most important tool technologies to look for in terms of ensuring performance is brushless motors. While effective, brushed motors rely on contact between carbon brushes and a rotary electrical switch to drive the

046_PB_JAN24_Layout 1 05/12/2023 10:37 Page 47

tool. This contact generates fiction, which in turn produces heat and wastes energy. In contrast, brushless motors use electromagnetism to rotate the motor and drive the action of the tool. By eliminating the friction, a brushless motor can produce more torque, allowing the same results to be achieved with less power used. As a result, a brushless motor can extend run times by up to 50% per battery charge for improved productivity and fewer recharges. The on-going advances in both the tools and batteries means that despite the greater performance, the high-powered combi drills can still be light and compact. For example, the Makita 40VMax HP001G XGT Brushless combi drill is just 4mm longer, 5mm wider and 17mm taller than the 18V LXT DHP486 Brushless combi drill.

Versatility Combi drills by their nature are supposed to be multi-purpose so it is important to look carefully at the capabilities of the tool when purchasing it. This includes the drill capacities in different materials, the impacts per minute (IPM) on the hammer drill mode and the maximum torque on screwdriver mode. Larger drilling and torque capacities in various different materials will make work on window and door jobs – alongside other similar tasks – simple as the same drill can be used for wood, metal, uPVC and masonry. The Makita HP001G has impressive capacities of 20mm in steel and masonry and 76mm in wood. It also

“A high-performance combi drill provides a versatile option for an even wider range of tasks, especially for door and window repair and replacement jobs.” delivers up to 39,000 blows per minute in impact drilling mode and up to 140 newton metres (Nm) of torque as a driver. Another consideration is how adaptable it is to different tasks. While it may sound obvious, it is worth looking for a combi drill as these offer drilling modes with and without hammer action so they can be used for a wider variety of tasks. It is also important to have a variable speed trigger and a broad range of torque settings in driver mode. This makes it easy to finely adjust the output for the task at hand. As an example, the HP001G has 41 torque settings in gear one and 21 in gear two, with the selection made on an easy to use digital display.

Safety It is also essential to look at the safety features that the tool has. One of the

simplest but most important on powerful, high-torque drills is the side handle. Using this will help prevent injury if the drill bit binds in the material and the body of the drill rotates unexpectedly – otherwise known as kickback. In addition to this, there are tool technologies that enhance user safety. For example, many Makita tools, including the HP001G, feature its Active Feedback sensing Technology (AFT), which shuts down the tool automatically if the rotation suddenly stops.

Kit options When purchasing a combi drill, it may also be worth looking for kit options, which offer a cost effective way of expanding or upgrading your kit. These may include multiple complementary tools, batteries and chargers. For example, the Makita’s DK0176G205 XGT Combi Kit includes a TD003G Impact Driver alongside the HP001G, as well as two 40VMax XGT LiIon batteries and a charger. FIBRE CEMENT FACADE

Let’s be natural: Materials such as wood and stone are much more to the fore when homeowners are selecting cladding.

SHOW YOUR COLOURS It’s widely believed that the colour of car you choose says a lot about you. Drivers of red cars are said to be confident and are often risk takers, while those behind the wheel of white cars are more conservative and in control. Don’t even go there with orange or brown cars! The same psychology is at play when customers specify building materials such as external cladding. Keeping current on colour trends, fibre cement facade specialist Cedral recently conducted the company’s largest piece of consumer research. Over two years, the

Urban chic. Metal green cladding is understated and confident.

New research from facade supplier Cedral suggests that the Covid lockdown, the squeeze on household budgets and a love of nature have all changed customers’ attitudes to colour choice. business interviewed homeowners and installers across eight European cities about attitudes to colour. The study has unearthed some surprising results that could help contractors understand more about what drives customers’ thinking when it comes to colour choice. Leading the research was Karin Steculorum, co-founder of European branding colour specialist I-VSUAL. She explained: “Our research into Cedral’s established colour range took us right back to basics, exploring the emotional aspect of colour choice and why we choose the tones and hues we do. When

thinking about colour, people’s lifestyles are hugely important. Every family has its own character and it’s important to have colours in the range that suit them, whether they live in the city or country; whether they have a young family or are retired. “Our study also looked at gaps in the established Cedral collection and looked at changing lifestyle trends. For instance, research shows that natural colours are gaining popularity and muted or garish colours are less popular now.” “This is really interesting,” added Dan Frith, product manager for Cedral. “In the

048_PB_JAN24_Layout 1 05/12/2023 10:38 Page 49

customers alike.” Another important revelation from the survey concerns the colour range customers expected to see from product manufacturers. Interestingly, homeowners wanted to see that manufacturers were able to offer the full array of colours, even if they weren’t going to specify those particular hues. Karin explains: “This availability of a complete spectrum gives people a kind of confidence in the business as a credible supplier. For building product manufacturers, the big take-out here is that you need to offer a complete range of colours, otherwise you won’t be seen as a serious supplier.”

Warm greens such as Tea Green have replaced more garish hues in the homeowner’s affections.

Colour changes last few years, we’ve seen a major shift in building styles towards natural materials such as wood and stone, away from steel and glass. This trend, which is known as ‘biophilia’ is having a big influence in construction and this movement is informing people’s choice of colour when it comes to cladding and facades.”

Colour in context Another revelation from the study concerns how homeowners made choices when it came to specifying façade colours. Dan Frith continued: “Our research showed that a lot of people feel almost overwhelmed when faced with a wall of say 30-40 different colours from which to choose. It’s too much for us to process, so we end up making decisions under stress – sometimes regretting that choice. “During our research, we discovered that customers wanted to be guided in

some way, so they felt confident in making the right colour selection. For us, this meant streamlining the range, which we then divided into four themes; the Design Collection; the Natural Collection; the Classic Collection and the Expressive Collection. All of these relate to different lifestyles, this providing homeowners with a visual roadmap. In marketing, we talk about the ‘customer journey’ and approaching our new colour range in this more structured way has already proved really popular with the trade and endEnlightened colour choice: Cedral’s new Walnut brown façade is proving especially popular in garden rooms.

Reflecting wider fashion trends researchers found that public taste has veered more strongly towards natural colours and away from more garish or bright hues. Dan continues: “We’ve seen customers take a new approach to colours – clay colours and earthy tones, for instance, are proving very popular. Homeowners are now wanting more of a natural warm effect. Given the economic climate this may have something to do with protection security and comfort. “Equally we’ve seen a huge move to bring the outside into homes and that’s why natural green colours are now proving very popular. We need to make an important distinction here between the brighter warm colours of green and the cooler more natural colours which refer to minerals and also plants. It’s the latter group which are really saying a resurgence in popularity.” The findings of the study guided Cedral in developing its new facade collections launched in September 2023. The company now offers colours arranged across four different Collections (Design, Natural, Classic and Expressive) each reflecting a specific lifestyle and outlook. Harnessing the power of the four collections will certainly give installers confidence to engage homeowners with more open conversations on colour specification. INSULATION

EFFICIENCY DRIVE Changes to Approved Document L (Part L) of the Building Regulations (June 2022), brought in much stricter energy efficiency standards. New homes must now produce 31% less carbon emissions than the 2013 standards. This can be achieved through a combination of fabric efficiency and sustainable technologies such as heat pumps. The changes don’t stop there. Part L is a stepping stone to the Future Homes Standard, set to come into force in 2025, which will bring in a 75% carbon reduction [over 2013]. Buyer demand is changing too. A recent Knight Frank survey found 86% of home buyers placed energy efficiency as ‘important’ or ‘very important’ when looking for a new home. While the government may have delayed the ban on installing gas boilers into new homes, it makes little sense for independent builders to do so. Getting your new builds heat pump ready is the best way to both appeal to homeowners now, save infrastructure costs if there’s no gas on site and future proof your builds.

Size matters With heat pumps, one size does not fit all. Install one that’s too small and homeowners won’t be able to heat their homes to the desired temperature (or

I

50 JANUARY 2024 PROFESSIONAL BUILDER

James Hulbert, Head of Housing and Offsite at Knauf Insulation explains the role of insulation in getting new homes heat pump ready. maintain a comfortable environment). Install one that’s too large, and they’ll be

wasting energy. So, if you are unsure which model is best for the home you’re building, check with the manufacturer. Remember there’s more than just the heat pump to be considered. Without effective insulation, you’re increasing the size of the space that needs heating.

Real performance A major factor in effective insulation is your choice of material. Insulation materials are given lambda values that indicate how well they prevent heat transfer. In theory, the lower the lambda, the better the insulation performs. However, whatever the lambda value, unintended air gaps allow heat to escape (compromising the insulation’s performance, whether thermal, fire safety or acoustic). Some materials are more prone to gaps than others despite the skill of the installer. Take rigid boards for example. They’re inflexible, so won’t adapt to imperfections in the substrate, need precision cutting on site to ensure good joint alignment, and must be taped. Even when they’re installed correctly, any movement in construction can undo the bricklayer’s good work. In contrast, mineral wool insulation is easy to fit correctly. It adapts to

050_PB_JAN24_Layout 1 05/12/2023 10:39 Page 51

imperfections, friction fits to the building elements, adapts to movement and knits together at joints – all of which helps to eliminate gaps.

Focus on fabric Once you’ve chosen the material, consider the quantity of insulation you install – it may be more than you think. To ensure that new build homes have the right levels of insulation to accommodate heat pumps (and changing regulations), follow the lead of volume housebuilders. They now regularly install loft insulation to a depth of 400mm to 500mm to ensure maximum performance for a nominal increase in build cost. Another area where we’re seeing change is cavity widths. With the Future Homes Standard on the horizon, 150mm cavity widths are likely to become the norm, so many housebuilders have already made the leap for Part L 22 – and with good reason. Adapting specifications now, future proofs designs and ensures there’s plenty

of time to get everything right. It means small housebuilders won’t have to adapt midway through the build or undertake retrofit work later. More importantly, increasing cavity widths by 50mm has a minimal impact on floor space or plot sizes, but provides optimal fabric performance. It also gives you more flexibility to choose the best insulation for the job. For example, 150mm of DriTherm Cavity Slab 32 not only provides reliable thermal and

acoustic performance, it also offers greater peace of mind because it’s noncombustible. Plus, with changes to NHBC Standards in 2023, it offers the design flexibility to be used with fairfaced masonry in areas deemed ‘Very Severe’ in exposure. Remember too, that, with the correct block, a 150mm cavity also delivers the 0.18 W/m2K U-value asked for in Wales (Part L 22). So, for maximum design and compliance flexibility, it is worth speaking to your architect or designer about expanding your cavity to 150mm. Ultimately, with energy prices predicted to remain high into the late-2030s, home energy efficiency will continue to be an important factor for home buyers. So, ensuring your new build homes are well insulated and heat pump ready will give you the competitive edge in a crowded marketplace. ROOFING

UP ON THE ROOF! James Robinson, Sales and Marketing Director of Samac Fixings, looks at three roofing products designed to make installations easier and more sustainable.

and are available in tubs of 500. By updating the hook’s appearance, these products provide an unobtrusive fixing solution, matching the colours against the colour of the slate itself, allowing the beauty of the roofing material to take centre stage. The result is a sleek and refined appearance that elevates the overall appeal of any property.

Solar There is little doubt that the construction industry is moving towards more eco-friendly practices. Roofing is no different and there are now many products on offer that are not only making life easier for builders, but that are also more environmentally sound. The Rooftec range from Samac Fixings, for instance, includes Dry Ridge Fixing Systems, Breathable Membranes along with Ethylene Propylene Diene Monomer (EPDM) lead alternatives. The latter was introduced because we understand that reducing environmental impact, conserving natural resources and minimising waste are necessary for the construction industry as a whole. EPDM has an impressive lifespan and the membranes are designed to resist degradation caused by UV rays, ozone exposure and extreme temperatures, ensuring they maintain their integrity for several decades. It’s made from synthetic rubber derived from natural gas and oil

and can be easily recycled at the end of its life cycle. Samac’s EPDM Rooftec Flex product has a core of aluminium mesh which is also highly recyclable, reducing the strain on natural resources and minimising waste generation. It is lightweight, easy to install, its life expectancy stretches to 40 years and it carries a 15 year guarantee.

Slate A well-maintained slate roof can last for over a century. This extended lifespan not only reduces construction waste but also decreases the energy and raw materials required for manufacturing new roofing materials. On a roof that looks so good and lasts so long, the last thing you want are visible hooks. Coloured Slate Hooks are the simple solution for fixing natural slate to pitched roofs and are an alternative to copper clout nails. They come in light grey, dark grey and green, measure 100mm x 2.7mm

A growing number of households have turned to solar panels, but a troubling problem can lie beneath them – debris that refuses to blow away. Soggy leaves, persistent moisture and stubborn dirt can create a breeding ground for mould which can compromise the stability of the roof and its ability to support the weight of the solar panels. The framework supporting solar panels are inviting perches for birds which can result in a build-up of debris and corrosive droppings beneath the panels. Some solutions to stop this involve drilling onto the panels, increasing the risk of extremely costly damage and voiding the panel warranty. Easily retrofitted, Solarguard Pro is the ideal solution; it is easy to install and safeguards up to eight solar panels per kit. Simply affix the two corner pieces to the highest row of panels, position the guard sections between them and secure them in place with a mounting clamp. Each pack includes 20 guards, four corner guards and 108 mounting clamps, suitable for use on all solar panels with a U-profile. It also comes with a reassuring 10-year warranty, offering installers and homeowners genuine peace of mind. FOR MORE DETAILS ON THE SAMAC FIXINGS RANGE VISIT WWW.RDR.LINK/BAZ069

TILING

ON THE TILES Garry Gregory, packed products director at Tarmac explains why the right tile adhesive can make all the difference to your customer’s projects. Your customers will have spent a long time choosing the perfect tile for their space and it’s important to use the most suitable tile adhesive to ensure they remain looking perfect. Tile adhesives can be used for fixing a wide range of tiles and stones over different surfaces. The solution is prepared to blend and prevents shrinkage, breakages and will ensure the tiles don’t slip. Most of the time you will require different adhesives for walls and floors but there are some that are suitable for both. But how do you know what type of adhesive is right for the job? And why is it so important to get it right?

How to choose the right solution When choosing your tile adhesive, the type of tile you are fitting needs to be the first consideration before looking at where the tile is going to be installed and what material the surface is. For instance, tile adhesives are flexible with thermal and physical movements and can be used with all types of tile and

I

54 JANUARY 2024 PROFESSIONAL BUILDER

stones without the need for the tiles to be soaked beforehand, making it suitable for a wide range of applications. However, there are a number of different types which have been tailored to meet the specific needs of certain applications and,

therefore, it’s important to know the difference: Ready mixed adhesives – ideal for tiling areas such as kitchen splashbacks where levels of moisture are lower. However, this should never be used when fitting porcelain tiles due to the nonporous surface, or when installing any floor tiling. Rapid set multi-flex adhesives – this should be used when fixing all types of ceramic and porcelain tiles to walls and floors in interior and exterior locations. Standard rapid cement – this should only be used when fixing glazed ceramic tiles that are larger than 30cm x 30cm to a solid wall or floors. It’s important to understand all of the above before purchasing your chosen tile adhesive. If the wrong one is selected, it could lead to tiles cracking, moving or coming loose, which could lead to customer complaints and returning to the job to fix any mistakes. Once you have worked out which type of tile adhesive is right for your project and how much you will need, it’s time to look at how to prep the space for the perfect installation.

054_PB_JAN24_Layout 1 05/12/2023 10:42 Page 55

GENERAL BUILDING COLOURED DECKING AND CLADDING Fail to prepare, prepare to fail… Thorough preparation is crucial if you want the tiles to be laid properly and to a high standard. Here are some simple steps to ensure a successful finish: Always ensure your equipment and the application is clean, dry and free from any dust and debris before you start tiling – this means that nothing will affect the bonding ability of the tile adhesive. Tile adhesive can set quickly and so always spread the tile adhesive on small areas first to ensure it doesn’t dry out before you have a chance to apply the tiles. Don’t forget to check the floor level before you start – this is especially important if you are applying floor tiles or if you are installing wall tiles that begin at floor level. You don’t want to apply tiles on a slant! Check the consistency and quality of the tile adhesive before applying it to the surface. If it’s too runny, it won’t hold as well and if it’s lumpy then the tiles won’t lay flat.

Maintaining a high standard Positive customer testimonials often refer to jobs that have been completed on time with the property left clean and tidy, which can be achieved by working efficiently and carrying the right tools and materials for the job. Tilers will always carry tile adhesive in the back of their van. However, for those jobs where you need to move a lot faster, a faster setting solution, such as Tarmac’s Blue Circle Masterlay Rapid Set Tile Adhesive is often required. We know that builders put a lot of pride in their work and always aim to complete jobs to the highest standard. Therefore, it’s important to select a highly workable and cohesive, good-quality adhesive that can be a great asset to anyone looking for a more durable, yet convenient solution for their projects. ELECTRIC UFH

THE CABLE GUYS Electric underfloor heating manufacturer, ThermoSphere is looking to make installation easier and remove the risk of damage

The price of materials and labour is contributing to the increase in renovation and construction prices, which are expected to rise by 17% in 2023. The average UK homeowner’s budget has increased to £7,500 per project. This is positive news because it means customers are still willing to spend on their renovations, even though their budget has to go further. For installers, that also means having to do more with less. Slow installations can hold work up, and smaller businesses in particular can’t afford to revisit finished jobs. Having the right materials and products can make all the difference. Electric underfloor heating manufacturers can help by going back to the drawing board and redesigning their cables to eliminate the risk of damage and speed up installation times.

Unnecessary risks In electric underfloor heating, a common point of failure is the “joint” where the heating cable meets the “cold” cable that

runs to the thermostat. These connections are bulky and often three times the size of the cables themselves, which leads to a predicament. Installers have to install them differently from how they would install the cable, and the only way to do it is by cutting holes into the material underneath the connections. Cutting into material can lead to cable damage in two ways. First, the cavities create an air gap, which doesn’t transfer away the heat quickly enough, so can lead to overheating months or years down the line. Second, to make the holes for the joints, installers have to use tools that can easily damage the cable or connections. Cutting the membrane

decoupling mat, the insulation board, or even the concrete or wood floor requires installers to use Stanley blades or grinders to make the holes. Installers need to carve out holes beneath the joints so the surface is flush for tiling. The problem is that this can’t be avoided without changing the way membrane heating cables are made. This is where next-generation underfloor heating cables can make a difference and head off any issues arising from the connections. Next-generation cables, like ThermoSphere’s Membrane Heating Cable, are made in a single manufacturing process. The hot-to-cold connections are made in-line and are the same diameter

ELECTRIC UFH

as the underfloor heating cable itself. Other cables create the hot-to-cold joints during a secondary manufacturing process where separate cables are crimped or soldered together and reinsulated with heat shrink. Making the hot-to-cold connection during the primary manufacturing process removes the risk of damage and gives installers the peace of mind that a job is truly complete. As Chris Field, owner of CJF Electrical Services commented, “ThermoSphere’s Membrane Heating Cable is so good – I think all cables should have in-line joint technology. I don’t have to cut out holes for the joints, so I can just press the cable into the mat and move on. It’s loads less hassle and I never have to worry about cable damage or revisiting a job.”

Faster installations A change in cable design and manufacture also drastically transforms the installation process. Installation is

quicker and simpler, letting smaller teams do more with less. And next-gen cables help to ensure quality installations for customers. Membrane heating cables with a uniform thickness can be easily pressed into a membrane mat, without the need for tools. The whole cable can be laid in one step, which makes installation much quicker and reduces disruption to a customer’s home. For smaller teams, this

simple change can significantly alter the amount of cable that they can lay in a short period. What’s more, ThermoSphere has released its new cable with four additional lengths, 42, 55, 90, and 175m, giving installers a cable for every project size. These extra cable lengths make it easier for installers to get the perfect match each time, reducing the amount of multicable installations they have to do. Crucially, no installation team has to change the membrane mats it uses, as all are compatible with this new in-line joint and TwistedTwin heating cable. Small changes can have big impacts for installers. ThermoSphere’s newly designed Membrane Heating Cable helps to prevent cable damage and makes installation faster. This can save installers time and money while delivering peace of mind. FOR MORE INFORMATION ON THERMOSPHERE VISIT: WWW.RDR.LINK/BAZ075

The nation’s leading hydraulic steel radiator supplier is venturing into the electric market. Professional Builder reports on a significant Stelrad launch. A one stop shop for the installer – that’s the Stelrad ambition and the launch of an electric radiator range is the latest move in that strategy. The Electric Series improves the manufacturer’s product mix and, as the market moves towards decarbonisation, puts the company in a highly advantageous position. The Stelrad Electric Series consists of 13 products – with multiple size and colour options within each – across three technologies, categorised as Dry, Dry Stone, and Fluid, the last of which utilises a mix of glycol and water. This is complemented by a selection of towel rails for bathrooms and en suites. It’s not just about performance either because there are options that will meet the needs of different decors and please on an aesthetic level. Added to that is the reassurance of a fiveyear warranty on the heating parts and a two-year warranty on the electric components. Amongst the new options is the Stelrad Electric Column design – a rounded vertical tube column radiator available in three sizes in both white or anthracite grey. There’s the Electric Agata and the Agata E-Flow – a straight, flat

tube towel rail design, featuring five banks of three tubes with spaces between each bank, available in three sizes in both white and anthracite grey. The unit combines modern design with functional heating and energy saving features. The E-Flow towel rails in the range feature a fan heater at the base of the towel rail and include manual controls for individual use of the towel rail or the fan heater, or both together as a 3 in 1 unit. On the aluminium front, there’s the Stelrad Electric Alu Simple Dry and Simple Fluid – available in three sizes in either white or anthracite grey. The matching colour digital thermostat is included with each model along with its remote control. In addition, there’s the Stelrad Electric Cloud – a fashionable, smooth fronted, curved faced steel radiator that comes in four models, in white and anthracite that offers a heating option for any room in the house. And the Stelrad Electric Cobalto and Cobalto E-Flow – a trendsetting flat tube towel rail combines good looks with heating efficiency. As with the Agata the Cobalto E-

Flow towel rails feature a fan heater at the base of the towel rail and include manual controls for individual use of the towel rail or the fan heater, or both together as a 3 in 1 unit. Not to be overlooked is the Electric Fantasia a mirage of a tubular towel rail – available in white or anthracite to match or contrast with colour schemes and designs in the home. Of course, with around 7 ½ million radiators produced in the UK each year, hydraulic solutions are still central to Stelrad’s business model. Steel panel models represent around 80 per cent of that volume, and the RMI sector is the destination for around 70 per cent. Stelrad already enjoys market leadership in the UK hydraulic radiator market, whether that’s repair, maintenance and improvement (RMI), or public and private specification. Its strategy is to increase its presence in higher value products, including column and LST models. In addition, the firm will be expanding its existing hydraulic radiator range to encompass low temperature systems, whilst continuing to develop its multi-channel and ecommerce offering for installers. In addition, products like its 900 High Compact bring radiators to ever more compact spaces, such as in flats. FOR MORE INFORMATION ON THE STELRAD ELECTRIC SERIES VISIT: WWW.RDR.LINK/BAZ076

GREAT AND SMALL

With a whole range of options – and new technologies – the Ford Transit Courier really does deliver. Compact yet capable, the manufacturer promises that the Ford Transit Courier is a van that punches well above its weight. In fact, the vehicle has been completely reinvented, with even more options. There’s a choice of powertrains, for example, with a 100kW all-electric, a 1-litre EcoBoost petrol, and 1.5-litre EcoBlue diesel on offer. Whatever the variant, it’s larger than its predecessor, fully connected and integrated with the Ford Pro platform. If you want an indication of just how serious the Detroit motor giant is about battery powered solutions then consider that its global investment in the technology now tops $50 billion. What that eye watering sum delivers is the broadest possible range and – amongst the EV commercial vehicles line-up – the smallest member is the E-Transit Courier. So, whether conventional internal combustion engine or electric, just what can prospective owners expect? Most importantly for construction users the Transit Courier is now bigger in every dimension, with overall length increasing by 180mm to over 1.8m, opening it up as an option to a wider range of tradespeople. Not only that the Transit Courier is

I

60 JANUARY 2024 PROFESSIONAL BUILDER

designed to provide enhanced load carrying ability. Total load volume is increased by 25 per cent. Smart design of the rear suspension has increased the width between the wheel arches to over 1.2m, allowing a Euro pallet to fit sideways and two pallets can now be carried rather than just one. Convenient loadspace features include an optional load through bulkhead for items over 2.6m, factory fitted mid height cargo rails can be specified, as well as

load floor covers, and there’s bright LED lighting. E-Transit Courier offers a payload capacity of a competitive 700kg – an increase of 118kg versus the previous diesel model. Added to that is a 44litre frunk where charging cables and smaller tools can be stored. The petrol and diesel Transit Courier models offer a standard payload of up to 678kg, and a High Payload option that increases maximum gross payload to 845kg. When towing there’s a maximum

060_PB_JAN24_Layout 1 05/12/2023 10:44 Page 61

trailer weight of 1,100kg for diesel and 1,000kg for petrol models. The interior has been designed as a productive space that enables working on the move, whether that’s through mobile device connection or storage for tablets or paperwork. At the heart of the E-Transit Courier driver experience is a 12in. touchscreen and digital cluster. Moreover, the centre console features a flexible and adaptable design which means it can be configured according to user requirements, and there’s a fold-away flat surface large enough for a laptop or A4 pad.

Electric avenue The all-electric is powered by 100kW electric motor producing 136PS and 290Nm of torque. Ford is anticipating that the E-Transit Courier will be popular with van users who charge at home. With 11kW AC charge capability, this means a 10 – 100 per cent charge takes 5.7 hours and customers can set their charge windows to take advantage of cheaper overnight energy. With 100kW DC fast charge 54 miles of range can be added in just 10minutes, whilst 10 to 80 per cent charging takes 35 minutes. One of the most attractive propositions of an electric vehicle is total cost of ownership and the E-Transit Courier does not disappoint. It is anticipated that nonscheduled maintenance costs for the allelectric will, for instance, be 35 per cent lower than the diesel variant. Connectivity is achieved with a built-in modem. Through it van operators can

access the Ford Pro ecosystem and enjoy on-going wireless software updates. Charging information can be viewed via a mobile device, and there’s Apple CarPlay compatibility. Furthermore, subscriptionbased Connected Navigation offers updates on traffic, parking, charging and local hazards. When it comes to safety the list of features supplied as standard is comprehensive, including Rear Collision Assist and Lane Keeping Assist. At the same time a wide range of additional technologies, such as Adaptive Cruise Control, can be specified. A key priority for the professional tradesperson is vehicle security. With a van parked up outside a job for much of the day, builders are particularly susceptible to the opportunist thief, but the Transit Courier does provide enhanced levels of protection. Ford customers can receive break in alerts to

their phone in the event of an attack, for example. The vehicle can be remotely disabled, and sensors will detect movement inside the van. Not only that, Ford has partnered with vehicle security experts TVL to provide four additional lock packs as factory-fitted options. These include an anti-pick lock for the driver’s door, handles that automatically lock the sliding side door and rear cargo doors when closed. There’s separate hook locks on side and rear doors to help prevent “peel and steal” thefts and ArmourShell hardened exterior locks on the sliding side door and rear cargo door.

Connected services Ford Pro is about much more than just security, however, offering connected services across charging, service, and finance. Small business owners who have little experience of electric vehicles need reassurance, and that’s where Ford Pro comes in, with functionality that includes a connected home charging wall box that can schedule charging at the cheapest and most convenient times. Similarly, the vehicle battery benefits from Scheduled Pre-conditioning, ensuring the battery is at an optimum operating temperature and will achieve maximum driving range. Ford customers will also benefit from 1 year of access to the Blue Oval Charging Network which is set to include 500,000 public charging points by 2024. builders’ vehicles In recent years there’s been a number of high-profile exits from the pick-up sector on these shores, but one stalwart is SsangYong Motor UK. Indeed, whilst others have struggled to plot a successful path in the off-road market, the Korean manufacturer has significantly increased its dealer network. At the same time a completely revised Musso range is a powerful statement of intent, with four separate models now on offer that have each been redesigned from the ground up. The most recent addition – and our Professional Builder test vehicle – is the Saracen+, which has been added to the existing EX, Rebel and Saracen variants. For builders load carrying is king, and the Saracen+ delivers with an additional 12in. in bed length and an increase in volume capacity. This is a vehicle that exudes ruggedness with a solidity that would survive a war zone. The plastic lined load area is accessed via a robust rear tailgate, for example. There’s the convenience of a 12V/120W power outlet, with rotating hooks to help strap-down loads. Moreover, thanks to double wishbone suspension, and dual coil springs, the Musso can legally tow 3.5tonnes and carry more than 1-tonne simultaneously. The payload is, in fact, a hefty 1,095kg at its maximum and, if that’s not enough, then a 7-year/150,000-mile warranty is an impressive offering in the pick-up market. All that means it’s built for a serious shift but, whether it’s transporting your fellow builders to site in style – or the family on the weekend – the double cab has a spacious interior that will accommodate five passengers and, with the aforementioned payload of more than 1-tonne, it is within the Benefit-in-Kind (BiK) tax rate for vans.

Exterior styling That additional muscle is reflected in bold exterior styling, with 18in. black alloy wheels, and 255/60 tyres. The Musso makeover goes further with a sleekness that a new design of fog lights affords, as well as roof bars, and a more prominent front grille. Every pick-up has undoubtedly increased in size and the high driving position is certainly beneficial in being

PLUS POINTS

The SsangYong Musso Saracen+ is playing the long game

able to see around the vehicle. Under the bonnet all four of the Musso models feature an e-XDi220 2.2 litre diesel engine, delivering 202ps at 3,800rpm and maximum torque of 441Nm at 1,600 to 2,600rpm combined with either a 6-speed manual or automatic transmission. The Musso is actually based on the same manufacturer’s Rexton SUV and it’s a provenance that is apparent in the interior. As a result, it benefits from features such as heated seating (both front and rear) and a 9.2in. infotainment system with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. You can also sit back in the comfort of the Nappa leather heated seat, enjoying the DAB radio and Bluetooth connectivity, and the visibility benefits of front and rear parking sensors. In amongst the rough stuff, there’s a selectable 4-wheel drive system. Power is driven to the rear wheel as standard and 4-wheel drive selected as required, with high and low ratios. Grip, traction and safety are further enhanced with hill descent control and hill start assist.

Whether it’s off road or on, one big area of improvement has been the ride quality, with a redesigned suspension delivering a much more comfortable experience. Added to that is light steering and a low noise cab that makes for pleasant driving. Overall, if you’re using a pick up for its intended purpose – as a load carrying workhorse – the Musso range offers a good level of equipment for the price, with the Saracen+ adding an extra touch of quality. SEALANTS & ADHESIVES

STIK‘EMUP We recently partnered up with Bond It to look at three products from its extensive range. These were Plasterers Pregrit, Mega Stik PU Adhesive and Gripbond Pro Hybrid Sealant and Adhesive. We brought these to site for a series of tests with the Mr A Builders YouTube Channel. In fact, you can check these out on our Professional Builder YouTube Channel using the link at the bottom of this page.

Plasterers Pregrit Matt from Mr A Builders showed us how to use Bond It’s Plasterers Pregrit on an internal wall with multiple different surfaces. With plastering, preparation is key. So, Matt first made sure to use a scraper on his wall, removing any old flaking paint and then sweeping any dust off with a brush. When it’s time to apply the Pregrit, this should be done with a smooth non-foam roller. Matt used a standard 9” emulsion one in a medium pile, making sure to get good coverage on the areas that need it most. Helpfully, the Plasterers Pregrit is coloured. This prevents doing too thick a coat and lets the applicator see where

The Professional Builder and Mr A Builders YouTube Channels team up with Bond It to test out an exciting range of products

they’ve already applied the product.

Gripbond Pro For our next Bond It product, we used the company’s Gripbond Pro Hybrid Sealant and Adhesive. This time, our tester was Adam from Mr A Builders, taking us through an overview of the product. Adam is actually doing some work on his house at the moment, so was using Gripbond Pro to stick and then seal a shower panel in his new en-suite. There’s often a worry with glossy plastic, like the back of Adam’s shower panel, that adhesives won’t stick very well. Thankfully, Gripbond Pro was more than up to the task and Adam stuck his shower panel to the wall with ease. Adam USE THIS RDR LINK TO WATCH THESE VIDEOS ON BOND IT’S PRODUCTS AND STAY TUNED FOR MORE EXCITING CONTENT ON THE PROFESSIONAL BUILDER YOUTUBE CHANNEL VISIT WWW.RDR.LINK/BAZ089 FOR MORE INFORMATION ON BOND IT VISIT WWW.RDR.LINK/BAZ090

was very impressed that he could then seal the panel with the same product too. He was also pretty chuffed with the fact it can work with all metals, plastic, polystyrene and wood. It is also weatherproof, non-shrinkable and paintable. Adam describes it as “all singing and dancing!”.

Mega Stik For our final Bond It product, Matt was back and using the Mega Stik PU Adhesive to stick plasterboard to a wall. With a handy comparison, as the company advises, he showed us why it’s important to shake the product vigorously before use. Otherwise, the viscosity won’t be right. After applying the Mega Stik to the back of the plasterboard, Matt made sure to keep a firm pressure on the board as he stuck it to the wall. He then filled the gaps around the board with the same adhesive. No need to worry about mess here as excess product can be cut after 24 hours. Finally, Matt holds the plasterboard in place for five minutes to help give it that extra bit of Stik!

designing attractive, comfortable buildings in sympathy with their existing settings, but have to produce something unique, completely different from anything built before. Should builders have an opinion on this? We are just the people tasked with turning the architects’ ideas into reality, but still . . . I recently visited Moorfields Eye Hospital in London. Well, to be fair, I have visited Moorfields many times. Years ago, they saved my sight after a detached retina, and they still call me back in for checkups. There is never any change in my vision, but I am always grateful for their care and attention. One doctor even apologised for the fact that I had to wait for 25 minutes. Don’t worry about that, mate, I said, I’m getting world-class medical treatment for free. Just think of all the poor people throughout the world who have no doctors at all – or those people in the USA with no medical insurance who have to sell their homes to pay for life-saving treatment. Anyway, walking out afterwards into the winter gloom of Old Street, with my eyes all blurry from the dilation drops, I was struck by the “M” building recently constructed opposite the hospital entrance. The façade of the building is what might be politely described as “eccentric”. There are no horizontal lines, and the roof and windows are at strange slants and confusing angles. My first thought was that this building is most unfortunately sited for the patients emerging from an eye hospital. You come out of the door feeling disorientated

anyway, and the first thing you see is a building that looks as though it’s sliding into the ground. I wonder how many patients have turned round and walked straight back into the hospital, saying, Doctor, I thought there was something wrong with my eyes before, but now you’ve made them worse! I’m not the only one to find this building inappropriate. It was nominated in 2015 for the “Carbuncle Cup” – an annual competition to find the ugliest building in the UK, but was beaten that year by the “Walkie Talkie” close by in Fenchurch Street. Anyway, researching the subject, I now find that this wonky building was not built opposite Moorfields Eye Hospital by accident but, rather, its design was actually inspired by that location. The architects suggest that the façade “expresses the idea of the optical and the visual”. And apparently, the confusing angles “… create a visual effect of depth and movement that appear to contradict the building’s actual form”. Yes, well, that’s easy for the architect to say. But maybe he should try recovering from eye treatment and finding his way home, and then appreciating his “visual effects”!

GOOD HEALTH NO. 50 CARPAL TUNNEL SYNDROME

RAW NERVES This month we cover more about carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS). We touched on this topic last month when it was mentioned along with the symptoms of hand-arm vibration syndrome. Carpal tunnel syndrome is a condition of its own with various different causes. So, what exactly is it? Let’s start with the name. The carpal tunnel is the name given to an area in the wrist. It is a tunnellike space with bones for walls and a floor and a ligament as the roof. There are tendons and a nerve called the median nerve that run through the carpal tunnel. If the tunnel becomes narrowed, there is no room for it to expand so there can be extra pressure put on the median nerve and its blood supply may be reduced. The nerve being compressed is what causes the symptoms of CTS. The symptoms of CTS can start gradually and come and go before getting worse and happening more frequently. Symptoms often happen at night if the hand has been in a particular position for a long period of time during sleep. The symptoms include:● Pain, tingling and numbness in the hand – mainly in the thumb and index, middle, and ring fingers. ● Occasional shock-like sensations that radiate to the fingers ● Pain or tingling that may travel up the forearm toward the shoulder ● Hand weakness and clumsiness – this may make it difficult to perform fine movements such as buttoning your clothes ● Dropping things – due to weakness, numbness, or a loss of proprioception (awareness of where your hand is in space) Symptoms at night are very common. People may often wake from sleep with pain which then settles when the hand is moved and the pressure on the nerve is relieved. During the day, symptoms may occur on holding something for a prolonged period of time with a bent

GP ALICE FITZGIBBON EXPLORES A CONDITION THAT MANY TRADESPEOPLE WILL BE FAMILIAR WITH

wrist, such as when using a phone, driving, or reading a book. Certain conditions or activities increase the risk of developing carpal tunnel syndrome. These include: ● being overweight ● doing work or hobbies where you repeatedly bend your wrist or grip hard, such as using vibrating tools ● having another illness, such as arthritis, thyroid problems or diabetes ● having a family history of CTS ● previous wrist injuries ● pregnancy. Carpal tunnel is seen commonly in general practice. It is often diagnosed by

the patient’s symptoms and an examination of the hand and wrist. If it is unclear if the symptoms are coming from CTS or another cause of nerve pain, nerve conduction studies may be needed to confirm the diagnosis. This is specialised test and there may be a long waiting list! Treatment for CTS is all about relieving the pressure on the nerve. If there is an obvious activity a sufferer is doing to cause the symptoms then reducing or stopping the activity is the first thing to do. Simple painkillers, especially nonsteroidal anti-inflammatories, might help on a short-term basis if they are suitable for you to take (if you are concerned or on other medication then check with your pharmacist). Use of wrist splints worn at night can treat CTS. They keep the wrist in position so it doesn’t bend during sleep and cause compression. These need to be worn consistently for at least 4 to 8 weeks as it takes time to improve the symptoms. Wrist splints can be ordered online or bought via a pharmacy. A selfphysiotherapy exercise plan may also be recommended to help. If the simple steps above don’t help the symptoms of CTS, or they are getting worse, further interventions may be needed. The next step may be a steroid injection into the wrist to try and reduce the swelling around the nerve. This doesn’t always help or may need to be repeated. Physiotherapists or trained GPs may offer this service in primary care. In severe cases of carpal tunnel syndrome, surgery may be needed to cure it. In this case, a specialist hand surgeon performs a minor operation to cut open the carpal tunnel and release the pressure.
