BE INSPIRED

What things immediately spring to mind as we enter April? I’m writing this column on a drizzly and cold March day so perhaps we’re getting the April showers out of the way a month early –we live in hope. There’s April Fool’s Day, but I guarantee you there are no fake stories in this issue – we’re happy to leave the mischief making to the tabloid press – although even some of their real stories all year round make you feel like you’re living in a perpetual “Groundhog” April Fool’s Day! On a more positive note, the clocks have gone forward and we can now take advantage of the lighter evenings. Whether you enjoy going for a walk after work, playing sport or just relaxing in the garden, travelling home from work in daylight is sometimes enough to lift the spirits.

There is a summer of sport to look forward to, with the Olympics and football European Championships coming up, as well as Wimbledon, Tour de France and a host of other events which inspire us amateurs to at least try and follow in some of their footsteps. It’s not just in sport where we can find inspiration. Last month we had the glitz and glamour of the Oscars ceremony, where the awards were largely dominated by Oppenheimer, and we also had the BRIT Awards, which were dominated by acts I have never heard of!

To

On top of that, there was of course International Women’s Day and it was great to see many industries and organisations promoting the avenues available to help women get involved in a sector that they might have previously been put off, and there were plenty of examples and case studies of women who have enjoyed tremendous success in their respective careers. The building trade has historically carried an image of being rather male dominated but in recent years we have seen a welcome upturn in young women choosing, enjoying and thriving in a trade career. I am always delighted to hear of initiatives set up to effect positive change within an industry and in our Soapbox column this month you can read all about some of the causes supported by the IDEAL Industries Foundation, including Chicago Women in the Trades, an organisation helping women enter and stay in the skilled trades, and Rosie’s Girls, a pre-apprenticeship electrical training programme for women.

I will leave you with a few more International ‘days of something’ that are taking place in April which you might take some inspiration from, including; World Health Day, International Day of Human Space Flight, World Art Day, English Language Day, World Creativity and Innovation Day, and last but my no means least, International Jazz Day!

See you in May.

LIGHTING CONFERENCE AGENDA CONFIRMED

NET ZERO LIGHTING CONFERENCE PROGRAMME UNVEILED

An exciting programme featuring leading experts in lighting and sustainability has been unveiled for the inaugural Net Zero Lighting Conference 24.

Organised by a unique partnership of The LIA and Recolight, the pivotal event is designed to help lighting manufacturers on their Net Zero journey. It takes place on Thursday 2nd May at 15 Hatfields, London. The conference places emphasis on the practical steps that lighting manufacturers can take to reduce the carbon emissions of all parts of their operations to contribute to the low carbon economy.

Zero. Nigel Harvey CEO of Recolight will share the organisation’s measures to minimise its carbon footprint, its successes – and the challenges it has faced.

“This event is coming at a critical time for the industry,” said the event chair, Ray Molony. “The lighting community stands ready and willing to play its part in addressing the climate crisis and we hope this gathering of experts and sharing of information will be a major springboard on our collective journey.”

The programme addresses seven vital areas:

Strategy: Tim Bowes and Oliver Wallace of Whitecroft share their roadmap for achieving Net Zero by 2045. Taran Rai from Epson will present the approach taken by a leading IT company to attain Net

Metrics and Measurement: Bob Bohannon, Head of Policy and Sustainability at The LIA, will give a summary of the differing metrics, (including B Corp, LEED, EcoVadis, SBTi, Earthly, Cradle-to-Cradle and TM65.2) Anton Borovy, Certification Manager for The LIA, will explain how low carbon operations can drive great TM65.2 scores.

Materials: Speakers include a representative from Wieland Nemco who will discuss how the incorporation of recycled metals into lighting products can reduce embodied carbon.

Energy: This topic includes Angus Rose, of Ineco Energy, who will guide delegates through their successful implementation of a solar project on a lighting factory.

Packaging: Two case studies, a packaging materials supplier and a lighting manufacturer will explore the world of sustainable packaging, and the steps taken to reduce plastic use and incorporate sustainable materials.

Transport: Andreas Adam of Ledvance will deliver a case study highlighting the pioneering sustainable transportation of both its luminaires to customers and its intake of raw materials.

Best Practice: The Manufacturer’s Perspective will be presented by Irene Mazzei of Stoane Lighting, a pioneer in sustainable manufacturing. Rebecca Hatch of WSP will explore the lighting specifier’s perspective in consideration of Net Zero credentials.

The day ends with a panel discussion addressing “Commercial Imperative or Environmental Responsibility?”

The Electrical Distributors’ Association (EDA) has picked up the award for Innovation of the Year at the prestigious Trade Association Forum Awards for the innovative EDATA data pool which features the ETIM product data standard.

Now in its 21st year, the Trade Association Forum (TAF) Awards 2024 are supported by the Department of Business and Trade, and recognise excellence, innovation and best practice amongst Trade Associations in the UK. Margaret Fitzsimons, CEO at the EDA, said of the win: “This Award is a welcome endorsement of the work the EDA is doing to digitalise the UK’s electrotechnical sector. To win it from among 170 leading UK trade association was a very proud moment for us.

“The EDATA data pool was only launched in 2020 and makes it much easier for the supply chain to structure and share the highest quality product information and images between the supply chain partners: manufacturer, wholesaler and electrical contractor.

“It has come a long way in a few short years thanks to the drive and determination of the team here at the EDA, in particular Richard Appleton, Head of Digitalisation, Javier Garcia, Data & Onboarding Manager, and Billy Overall, Digitalisation Marketing Manager. There is still a mountain to climb but this Award spurs us on.”

Emily Wallace, Chief Executive of the Trade Association Forum and one of the head judges on the panel, said: “Data

pooling is at the cutting edge of collaboration driven by associations. The judges were impressed by the EDA’s innovative approach, creating not just one but two services which help members, with the success being clear in the rapid growth of both initiatives.”

The Association was also Highly Commended in the Skills Development category for the suite of 12 EDA Product Knowledge Modules.

NEW LIGHTING FOR STUDENT ACCOMODATION

LUCECOILLUMINATESNEWUNIVERSITY OF CHESTER STUDENT ACCOMMODATION

The University of Chester has installed Luceco’s flagship backlit LED solutionsin its brand-new student accommodation, Sumner House.

The university originated as the first purpose-built teacher training college in the UK and continues to expand with extensive student demand and sites across Chester, Warrington, Shrewsbury and Birkenhead. The 2023 refurbishment of the former hotel in Chester city centre has brought high quality, modern design to the University’s brand new full-board and self-catered student accommodation.

Luceco was delighted to design and supply Contour Suspended lighting in varied sizes in multicolour and black, creating a stylish and striking lighting solution for the communal seating area at Sumner House. Creatively installed in intervals between sculptural wooden slats, with further colourful lights artistically suspended to create a focal point, Sumner

House shows the versatility of Luceco LED lighting solutions and the myriad of creative possibilities for installation.

This lighting solution was paired with LuxPanel Extra 600x600 in other areas, soft glowing panels that gently illuminate the space whilst offering an ideal level of light for working.

Andy Whalley from Luceco said: “We were delighted to design and supply the lighting solutions for Sumner House, optimising efficiency while creatively enhancing aesthetics, thus further strengthening our long-standing relationship with the University of Chester. Developing strong working partnerships is integral to our strategic objectives of growth, innovation, and sustainability.’

Nick Dudley from the University of Chester said: “We are thoroughly impressed with the project outcome and the exceptional quality of Luceco products. Luceco worked closely with us

to tailor lighting solutions that create the perfect environment for our students. Many millions of pounds are continually invested in the accommodation and resources to enhance the student experience and there is a strong focus on making students feel supported and at home.”

VENT-AXIA SENTINEL APEXSCOOPSCIBSEAIR QUALITY

Vent-Axia is delighted to have won an award at the prestigious CIBSE Building Performance Awards 2024.

The Sussex-based company won the ‘Product or Innovation of the Year – Air Quality’ category for its Sentinel Apex, the next generation of commercial heat recovery ventilation. The winners were announced at a glittering awards ceremony on Thursday 29 February 2024 at the Park Plaza Westminster Bridge, London.

The CIBSE Building Performance Awards (BPAs) 2024 recognises the people, products and projects that demonstrate engineering excellence in the built environment. They are the only industry awards that focus on actual, measured performance outcomes, and not just design intent or performance

specifications. Vent-Axia beat stiff competition in the ‘Product or Innovation of the Year – Air Quality’ category. After a rigorous judging process, the judges selected the Sentinel Apex, which they noted supplies fresh, healthy, filtered air to improve indoor air quality (IAQ), removing pollutants such as moisture, carbon dioxide and external fumes.

“We are very proud that our Vent-Axia Sentinel Apex has been recognised by the CIBSE Building Performance Awards. This marks the third industry award for the innovative Sentinel Apex since its launch in November 2023. We understand the challenges that come with designing low-carbon buildings, which means every aspect has been considered in the Apex’s development to maximise its energy efficiency and performance, while providing excellent IAQ, ultra-low sound levels and thermal comfort. We have also designed the Apex to have a low embodied carbon footprint and to help consultants we have used CIBSE TM65 data collection methodology to provide accurate and detailed carbon information”, said Lorna Kerrigan-Hall, Sales Director C&I at Vent-Axia.

SURVEY HIGHLIGHTS IMPACT OF ECONOMIC SLOWDOWN

ENGINEERING SERVICES SECTOR FEELS THE PINCH DESPITE GROWING DEMAND

The latest quarterly survey of the UK engineering services sector, backed by trade bodies ECA, BESA, SELECT and SNIPEF, has revealed that electrotechnical businesses are feeling the effects of the economic slowdown and a shortage of skilled workers, despite high activity and growing order books.

While two in five survey respondents (40%) said their business’ turnover increased in the final quarter of 2023, a third (34%) said staff shortages are the biggest threat to their business and predicted business growth to stagnate in 2024. The survey also revealed that most business

owners in the sector continue to grapple with high prices and slow payment times. Nearly two thirds (62%) of respondents said commercial clients and main contractors took 31 to 60 days to pay for work, and 15% said this could take 61 to 90 days. Half (47%) of respondents said public sector clients can take 31 to 60 days to pay. One in 10 (9%) said they can take 61 to 90 days.

Three in five (60%) respondents said between 1 and 10% of their turnover is currently being held in retentions.

Rob Driscoll, ECA Director of Legal and Business, said: “In light of the wider economic slowdown, these latest survey figures are far from surprising. However,

they offer some vindication for the hard work ECA has been doing to give electrotechnical and engineering services contractors a voice, and the opportunity to play their part in the nation’s economicrecovery.

“While the outlook for the sector is pessimistic for the rest of 2024, there are signs that the economy could turn a corner by 2025 and the sector could return to growth.”

TRADES SEE 20% DECREASE IN JOB VALUE

Over the past year there was a 20% drop in the value of jobs given the go ahead, according to data analysis from Workever. The data shows that the average quote value dropped by 6.5% in 2023 compared to 2022’s data, with the value of quotes given the green light by homeowners dropping by nearly £500, an average of 20%.

Data analysed from more than 500 companies and sole traders also showed that average invoice values have dropped by nearly 10% too, with invoices for

tradespeople such as plumbers, heating engineers and electricians averaging £748 in 2023, compared to £829 a year earlier, despite rising costs and overheads.

Worryingly, invoices are also being paid more slowly with tradespeople waiting an average of 31 days to get paid compared to 29 days in 2022, as well as a nearly 2% increase in unpaid invoices.

Damien Knight, CEO and founder of Workever, said: “Whilst there’s been a dip in the housing market due to mortgage rates, the expected resulting boost in

‘don’t move, improve’ work for tradespeople doesn’t seem to have translated. It’s easy to lose track of jobs quoted or even those completed without a centralised log of everything. This is where utilising software that can track jobs, log quotes and manage all elements of the workload can prove invaluable. Missing even one job could mean a significant loss of earnings, as can forgetting to invoice for the extra work done on a job; not ideal when tradespeople are already seeing a decline in the value and number of jobs.”

INCLUSIVITY IN THE WORKPLACE

As part of a focus on mental health, the EIC examines behavioural issues in the workplace.

DIVERSITY AND INCLUSION

Diversity and inclusion contribute to a supportive and thriving environment, whether in the workplace, or in day to day life. It is important to celebrate differences in those around us. Being inclusive ensures that everyone feels valued and has a sense of belonging. Treating others with respect and integrity promotes innovation, creativity, collaboration and leads to better outcomes, every single time.

EQUALITY

Equality in the workplace means equal job opportunities and fairness for employees and job applicants. You must not treat people unfairly because of reasons protected by discrimination law (known as protected characteristics).

UNCONSCIOUS BIAS

To understand unconscious bias, it is important to appreciate that it is a natural human behaviour. Humans are programmed to survive. As such, the brain continuously assesses the world around us – processing visual, behavioural and verbal signs and signals, using them to assess danger, risk and opportunity.

It can therefore be difficult to identify when we are using unconscious bias in a negative or discriminatory way, as these views are so innate. Reflecting upon what

might have built up our preferences for certain people, situations and environments, helps us deconstruct them and allow room for change, difference and integration.

INSTIGATING CHANGE

Once we have identified, challenged, and deconstructed our unconscious bias we are in a position to instigate change in our environment. Whether this be in the family home, friendship group or workplace. It is one thing to determine that change is needed but quite another to understand how to implement that change and what the changes should look like.

It is important to appreciate that change takes time and requires the input of all people involved who will be affected by this change. This means instigating a process of education and collective understanding that is likely to be frustrating at times.

Empathy, active listening and perseverance will be key to instigating change. Engaging in the emotional aspects

of implementing change will enable a proper policy reflecting the needs of all people involved in the relevant situation to be written and enforced.

HARRASSMENT AND BULLYING

Bullying and harassment are often confused. By law (Equality Act 2010), bullying behaviour can be harassment if it relates to any of the following protected characteristics:

● Age

● Disability

● Gender reassignment

● Marriage and civil partnership

● Pregnancy and maternity

● Race

● Religion and belief

● Sex

● Sexual orientation

Neither bullying nor harassment should be accepted or tolerated in any group situation. Some people may not realise that the behaviour they are being subjected to is bullying, and likewise and bully or harasser may not understand that their behaviour is hurtful and wrong. Taking the time to implement an important policy that outlines these issues thoroughly and clearly empowers people to take note of the situation around them and take the first step towards escalating the issue.

In this month’s Face to Face we speak to Damion Huggins, Sales Director at Saxby Lighting & Saxby Electrical, about his involvement in the industry and Saxby’s latest plans.

QWhat is your industry background and how did you get involved with Saxby?

A. I have been with the company for almost 20 years! I have had the privilege of growing my expertise and career alongside the Saxby brand which has grown dramatically over that time. The number one quality that is required to be successful in my role is being able to build relationships. The Saxby brand ethos is centred on loyalty to our wholesalers and I am delighted to lead the team that is responsible for that in the UK.

QWhat were Saxby’s most popular product lines across the last 12 months?

A. We have worked incredibly hard on building a collection of our strongest lines in what we call our Saxby signature ranges. FIVE ALIVE!

Now in its fifth year of trading as an independent lighting company, Ovia has established itself as a leading player in the lighting sector. With Issue 5 of the Ovia catalogue just released into circulation, Mike Collins, Managing Director, shines a light on one of the new light fittings which he believes will be a star performer for the company this year.

Small and compact in name and format but packing a huge punch when it comes to features and benefits is the new Inceptor Milli dimmable, fixed, fire-rated LED downlight. Designed to complement the range of downlight solutions already offered by Ovia, Inceptor Milli is aimed predominantly at the domestic market. It combines style and functionality to provide installers with a downlight that is quick and easy to fit and offers a range of features at the flick of a switch.

Standard or Baffle

Inceptor Milli is an IP65-rated downlight that is available both in standard/fixed and

baffle versions. The standard version provides a 60˚ beam angle, while the baffle provides a more focused 25˚ angle. The baffle design ensures a more concentrated and directional illumination, making it an ideal choice for highlighting specific areas. The baffle is offered in a choice of white or black.

Five bezel finishes are available, with a choice of White, Black, Chrome, Satin Chrome and Antique Brass finishes offered. With the standard version you simply order the finish of your choice as a fixed finish. The baffle version is supplied with a white bezel, but this can be interchanged with any of the other finishes and they are purchased separately. Simply twist the

existing bezel to remove and replace with the colour finish of your choice. This also means that for a fresh new look in the future, it is simply a case of replacing the bezels with an alternative finish.

Switching it up

A key feature to highlight with the Milli downlight is the element of control that is offered in this one fitting. There is the option to seamlessly switch between 6.4W and 4W power outputs using a single switch to provide users with unprecedented control over their lighting environments. There is also the ability to easily switch the colour temperatures between 2700K (Warm White), 4000K (Cool White) and 6500K (Daylight). This allows for effortless adaptation to varying lighting needs and makes it easy for the end user to tailor their lighting to suit their individual requirements. Whether they are seeking a vibrant, well-lit atmosphere or a more subdued, energy-conscious ambiance, the Inceptor Milli ensures optimal flexibility.

Rotatable insulation cover

One feature that sets the Inceptor Milli apart from many downlights on the market is the insulation cover which introduces a practical solution for installation challenges. The rotatable insulation cover allows you to install the downlights safely under insulation but also adjust the cover allowing for 5mm extra clearance. On the standard/fixed Milli downlight the insulation cover can be twisted to the up and down position and still fit in a 60mm void. The baffle version can only fit in a 60mm void when the insulation cover is down and the plasterboard is a minimum thickness of 12.5cm.

SPECIAL REPORT 22 APRIL2024 PROFESSIONAL ELECTRICIANS WHOLESALER

By accommodating insulation materials more effectively, the Inceptor Milli ensures optimal performance. Unrestricted airflow around the fixture helps manage heat dissipation, contributing to the longevity and efficiency of the downlight. Our downlights are Fire Rated to 30, 60 and 90 minutes and also feature an Intumescent Strip, which, when exposed to fire, expands to seal the gap between the light fitting and plasterboard.

Fast-Fit connection

All our Inceptor Milli downlights are supplied pre-wired with a Fast-Fit, 3-Pole and Loop Flow connector, and we also provide a loose push-fit Flow connector in the box which ensures a quick and easy installation process.

Broad cut-out range

The Inceptor Milli has a broad cut-out range of 64mm to 75mm, which allows the

downlights to be installed in a wide range of existing ceiling downlight cut-outs.

Multi-pack

With the aim of providing a practical and cost-effective solution for a comprehensive range of lighting projects, Inceptor Milli is available in a convenient 10-pack box, as well as in singles.

Sustainable Inceptor

Our industry is currently evolving from a linear to a circular economy, and this will only intensify in the coming months and years. The emphasis is on reducing the amount of waste that goes to landfill by embracing a re-using, remaking/repairing and recycling mentality. Sustainability drives all the decisions and actions we make at Ovia. We are committed to contributing to the transition to a circular economy and our aim is to make Ovia market leader in sustainable lighting.

TM66Assured Product Verification Scheme

We are working towards making sure all of our Inceptor luminaires meet the requirements of the TM66 Assured Product Verification Scheme. This scheme is an innovative initiative developed and fulfilled by the Lighting Industry Association (LIA) and endorsed by CIBSE (Chartered Institution of Building Services Engineers) and its aim is to advance circular economy practices within the lighting industry. Critical in safeguarding lives during power outages and crisis situations, emergency lighting is an essential component of lighting design in public buildings. Chris Anderson, Technical Manager at Ansell Lighting, explores the diverse range of products and technologies available for wholesalers to stock in order to support customers to create reliable and compliant emergency lighting solutions.

LEADING LIGHTS

In the face of unforeseen emergencies or power failures, the reliability and functionality of emergency lighting systems is paramount to building occupant safety, ensuring premises can be easily evacuated or remain occupied when building illumination fails.

Regulations

Required by law in all public, commercial and high occupancy residential buildings, emergency lighting rules are stipulated under the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005, The Health and Safety at Work Act, Building Regulations, The EU Workplace Directive, Fire Safety Regulations and the European Standard BS EN 1838.

With such a wide variety of regulations to meet, it’s rare that individual project installations have the same requirements and so, for wholesale customers seeking to enhance customer loyalty and sales revenues, it is imperative that a range of different products and features are available for purchase and specification.

Types of emergency lighting

Split into three separate areas, emergency lighting encompasses escape route lighting, open area lighting (or anti-panic lighting) and high-risk task lighting. As its name suggests, escape route lighting is specifically intended to illuminate pathways and exits for the safety of people leaving a location. Emergency exit signs and exit

boxes are most commonly specified here, usually installed above head height on walls or suspended from ceilings and feature a running white man on a green background.

Open area lighting on the other hand, is designed to light up spaces to allow occupants to both see and head to evacuation routes. Downlights, twin spots and bulkheads are the most popular options, usually specified with interior design/aesthetics taken into account.

High risk task lighting is designed to allow those involved in a potentially dangerous processes or situations to follow shut down procedures. Again heavy duty, emergency compliant bulkheads and downlights are commonly installed in such spaces to provide maximum visibility in challenging environments.

Alongside a broad range of product types, wholesalers should also ensure the range they offer provides a variety of testing options and power sources.

Testing

Testing of emergency luminaires is a legal requirement in the UK, with required standards and regulations outlined in the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005, The Health and Safety at Work Act, Building Regulations, The EU Workplace Directive and the Fire Safety Regulations.

When it comes to product testing options, there are two common choices –manual or automatic. Where a product requires manual testing, all lighting circuits and luminaires will be isolated, before a tester passes through the whole building or circuit, checking that each emergency luminaire is operating correctly. The mains supply is then restored and the whole building or circuit must be walked again to check that the emergency lights have returned to being operational.

With intelligent self-test lighting systems, when the units are first installed, the fitter will randomly select a test date of between 200 and 365 days. Once this date is set it will continue to test at the same time every year for a full three-hour test. Every 30 days the installation will also be automatically tested for ten minutes. A small LED button on the fitting will illuminate to show either regular function or that a fault has occurred providing much speedier and more costeffective testing maintence.

Taking this intelligent testing one step further, recent advances in technology have led to the creation of dashboards

EMERGENCY LIGHTING
24 APRIL2024 PROFESSIONAL ELECTRICIANS WHOLESALER

which enable connected lighting to be centrally monitored and tested wirelessly and automatically at the touch of a button. The dashboard is able to drill down and highlight if an individual luminaire or driver is outside of expected operational parameters. This indicates that the luminaire or driver may need attention to proactively repair or replace, rather than waiting for a failure.

Specification of testing options are often budget or circumstance dictated so wholesalers should ensure they stock both manual and self-test fittings, to maximise versatility and sales potential.

Power

Power source is another important consideration for emergency lighting installations. ‘Self-contained’ and ‘central battery source’ are the two main types of power source. Both serve the purpose of providing emergency lighting during power outages or failures but have distinct characteristics and offer different benefits.

Self-contained systems have their own power supply which means they are powered by a back-up source such as a

generator. Operating independently of each other, a major benefit of using this type of power source is that if one unit fails, the operation of other luminaires is not affected. This independence offers flexibility in the placement and installation of individual fixtures, making them suitable for a wide variety of building layouts and retrofit projects. Typically easier and quicker to install, self-contained emergency lights do not require extensive wiring between fixtures and a central power source. They are usually more cost effective in smaller spaces and maintenance and testing can be more straightforward.

Emergency lighting systems operated from a central battery source on the other hand, offer more efficient battery management and can often provide longer backup power durations. They are also much less susceptible to ambient temperature and air conditions as the battery supply is housed in a protective environment. Central battery source systems also allow for centralised management and monitoring of the entire emergency lighting network which can be advantageous in larger buildings or facilities

where comprehensive control is essential.

As with emergency testing options, ultimately, project budgets are usually the main determiner in power source specification choice but in most cases, specifiers will prescribe a combination of the two to provide complete protection during times of power failure.

Consequences

The consequences for business owners and responsible persons who fail to comply with fire safety legislation and emergency lighting rules can be very serious. Electrical installers and specifiers are under increasing responsibility to ensure that the emergency lighting systems they create provide reliable and continuous illumination during power outages or emergencies. By stocking a varied and comprehensive range of emergency lighting fitting, wholesalers can ensure they are able to fully service customer projects and maximise sales revenues.

EMERGENCY LIGHTING

SELF-TEST AWARE

Emergency lighting is a legal requirement in almost every building, with one simple, lifesaving task: to provide light if a power outage shuts down a building’s standard operational lighting. It is the responsibility of building owners and responsible persons to prove that the emergency lighting systems they are responsible for are working correctly and are regularly maintained so that they are in full working order.

According to BS5266-1 Emergency Lighting – Code of practice for the emergency lighting of premises, the functional operation of the emergency lighting systems falls onto the responsibility of the user (i.e. the appropriate person appointed responsible for the premises).

BS 5266-1, Section 12 outlines the recommended routine testing of the system. These include (but is not definitive to):

● Checking functional operation “at least every month”.

● Full rated duration test (on each luminaire) “at least annually” (full discharge of batteries to check all working as required).

● Logging of failures to any part of the system and introducing alternate safety procedures until this is repaired.

● Recording all testing and repair information in a logbook.

All emergency lighting installations must have routine tests carried out, with each system luminaire the subject of daily, monthly and annual testing. These tests should all be documented with the results including maintenance and rectification results all held on file.

Whilst the testing of emergency lighting does not take much effort and isn’t difficult, manually inspecting every single lighting luminaire for lamp starting, operation and duration performance can be a very labour intensive and therefore expensive task. However, with the latest improvements in technology, routine testing can be simple, automatic and therefore much less expensive. It is now possible for building owners to take advantage of emergency lighting equipment that ‘self-tests’ in accordance with the relevant standards.

Reduce the burden

Installing self-test emergency lighting units can reduce the burden of testing emergency lighting installations as they

perform all mandatory testing automatically, removing the need for manual testing to be carried out by the user or building owner. The resulting reduction of labour time leads to inevitable cost savings. Whilst the initial costs for the products may be higher, overall, they will provide a very short payback period - making them an ideal option that should be given consideration at the beginning of any project.

The benefits of self-test emergency light units include ease of installation, with no need for key switches or additional data cables for example. Convenience is also a major plus, with mandatory tests carried out without disruption to the normal use of the building, and any faults identified. The self-test units identify faults in luminaires and any faults are then highlighted to maintenance personnel, saving them the time and effort it would take to search the building in question for faults.

Self-test units use an accurate internal clock programmed to interrupt the permanent mains supply at set intervals,

EMERGENCY LIGHTING

initiating emergency lighting tests. Short duration weekly and monthly tests and annual full duration tests are automatically activated with the results shown via an LED indicator on the fitting. The responsible person only needs to check the indicator and it means that only lights with reported faults will need to be attended to by maintenance personnel.

Extra peace of mind

During initial power up of a self-test unit, an automatic commissioning stage will begin. The internal clock will commence at a random time between 0 and 24 hours –this avoids the luminaires all going into test at the same time. After the initial

charge up time (up to 72 hours), the unit will carry out a full duration test. After all initial tests are completed successfully the inbuilt processor will start the standard programmed test schedule, reporting failing functions via the status LED. In addition, it is also possible to initiate a manual test on self-test emergency lighting fittings for extra peace of mind.

Monitoring results is straightforward. A single bicolour LED indicates the system status. A green LED on constant with a pulse once every minute shows that the micro-processor is active and functioning. A flashing red LED identifies a fault condition is present. If a fault is resolved the LED indicator will return to green.

The following LED statuses apply to ESP’s Duceri self-test fittings:

ESP continues to develop its Duceri range of Emergency Lighting to meet the latest standards and to offer the latest technologies. The company’s range of SelfTest Emergency Light Fittings offers numerous benefits over standard fittings by reducing the costs and time associated with manual testing and inspection.

The self-test products within the Duceri Emergency Lighting range include:

● 3W LED Maintained Emergency Selfcontained Downlight with Self-Test and Interchangeable Open and Corridor Lens.

● 3W LED Emergency Open Lens Downlight with Self-Test

● 9W LED IP65 Non-Maintained Emergency Twin Spot with Self-Test

● 3W LED IP65 Maintained Emergency Bulkhead with Self-Test

● 3W LED Maintained Emergency Exit Box with Self-Test

They have all been tested and comply with the latest standards.

BOXING CLEVER

Michael Crowther, Sales & Marketing Director at Hylec-APL, celebrates 10 years of Debox, the versatile junction box family designed to save electrical installers time and money.

Whether in domestic or commercial settings, junction boxes remain an essential component in any electrical circuit. Functioning as a central hub for wiring connections between fittings or devices and the mains power supply, these vital enclosures provide protection, isolation and easy access for maintenance or inspection. By offering mechanical strength and durable electrical continuity, they also help wiring installations comply with regulations.

However, not all junction boxes are created equal – and installers must take care to use them in a way that ensures consistently safe, reliable and compliant electrical installations. That’s exactly why Hylec-APL introduced its innovative Debox junction box a decade ago. Debox reimagined the junction box, simplifying installation through virtually tool-free operation and saving time by including everything needed to reliably and safely connect cables.

A decade of Debox

10 years on from its introduction at LuxLive 2014, the Debox series of cable junction boxes now extends to five models to address different application use cases –and millions of units have been sold worldwide since its launch. The entire range has been designed to make installers’ lives easier and save installation time by including everything they need –from integrated terminal blocks with rapid connections and cable clamps to tool-free closure and maintenance-free operation.

Meanwhile, installers are having to deal with increasing numbers of electrical or electronic devices and fixtures – from LED up- and down-lighting to all kinds of smart home and building automation functionality.

This often drives up the time, complexity and ultimately cost of installations, as well as the risk of quality and compliance issues.

So, for busy electrical installers looking to quickly and methodically wire up multiple devices or fittings on-site, Debox’s integrated design simplifies and guides them through the process, saving time and money without compromising quality –and crucially, ensuring consistently safe, reliable and compliant installations.

EXTERNAL INFLUENCES

Jake Green, Head of Technical Engagement, Scolmore Group, gives a brief overview of the general range of conditions detailed in Section 522 of BS7671, which an installer will have to consider as they select a suitable wiring system for an electrical installation.

One of the fundamental principles detailed in Chapter 13 of BS7671: 2018 (including amendments) is ‘Environmental conditions’. Simply stated, Regulation 132.5.1 requires that “the design of the electrical installation shall take into account the environmental conditions to which it will be subjected”.

Section 522

Section 522 of BS7671 details those environmental conditions that need to be considered when selecting and installing wiring systems. The scope of the section is wide ranging covering the following:

● Ambient temperature – requires the designer/installer to ensure that installed equipment is suitable for both the minimum and maximum temperatures reasonably expected. Account should also be taken of the maximum temperature expected under fault conditions (522.1).

● External heat sources – electrical equipment must be protected from the

detrimental effects of specific heat sources. This might be by shielding, distancing from the source, having equipment capable of managing the level of heat or local reinforcement or substitution of insulating material (522.2).

● Presence of water or high humidity –electrical equipment must be suitably protected from ingress by water and/or the build-up of condensation. The Unicrimp Q-Nect series (junction boxes, connectors and connection boxes) provides a range of IP66 to IP68 products, providing the designer/installer with suitable options

when selecting equipment for use in the presence of water (522.3).

● Presence of solid foreign bodies –requires the wiring system to be capable of minimising the danger arising from the ingress of solid foreign bodies. The IP rating should be suitable for the nature of the foreign bodies (522.4).

● Presence of corrosive or polluting substances – requires due account to be taken of materials/substances likely to cause corrosion or deterioration of the wiring system. This can be water (rust), presence of dissimilar metals or more obvious corrosive substances (522.5).

● Impact – the wiring system must be capable of withstanding damage caused by mechanical stress such as, impact, abrasion, penetration, tension, compression during installation as well as being protected from impact as part of the fixed installation (522.6).

CABLE & CABLE ACCESSORIES 32 APRIL2024 PROFESSIONAL ELECTRICIANS WHOLESALER

● Vibration – requires a wiring system to be supported in such a way that due account is given to the likely vibration that will exist. This may require, for example, use to be made of saddle clips rather than standard cable clips where a cable is not installed within a cable management system (522.7).

● Other mechanical stresses – requires a wiring system to be selected and erected to avoid during installation, use or maintenance, damage to the sheath. This requires use to be made, where necessary of correct saddles, clips and the like to support cables to avoid damage to the cables and terminations. Furthermore, amongst other things, buried cables should be suitably marked with tape/cable covers (522.8).

● Presence of flora and/or mould growth – requires the designer to take account of the effects of plants, trees and the ingress of mould growth (522.9).

● Presence of fauna – recognises that wildlife can have a serious negative impact on an installation. Rodents can gain access through very small openings; large animals can cause significant damage to cables and the like. Designers and installers must make use of both suitable wiring systems and correct locations to avoid damage (522.10).

● Solar radiation and ultraviolet radiation – where solar or ultraviolet radiation is likely to have a significant effect, a suitable wiring system must be selected and erected or properly shielded (522.11).

● Seismic effects – are unlikely to be an issue in the UK (522.12).

● Movement or air and Nature of processed or stored materials (522.14) is covered in other parts of BS7671.

● Building design – requires the designer to take due account of where structural movement is likely to exist and potentially create excessive mechanical stress. This typically happens in larger and taller buildings where relative movement is required as part of the build (522.15).

This article has only touched upon the various environmental factors to be considered by designers and installers. Reference should also be made to Appendix 5 of BS7671for the applicability of the various codes detailed in Section 522.

CLOUD AND SECURITY

ADVANCEMENTS IN ERP INTELLIGENCE

As ERP solutions continue to evolve, they're incorporating technologies like artificial intelligence (AI), machine learning (ML), and robotic process automation (RPA). Once fully integrated, the ERP system performs tasks for businesses that once required manual operation. For example, in K8, electrical wholesalers can increase forecasting accuracy by analysing sales history and building in seasonable variables, safety stock and planned growth, avoiding overstocking or running out of stock. This development saves costs while freeing up time for employees to focus on the business areas that generate more revenue.

MAXIMISING

The triple supply shocks of Brexit, Covid and the Russian invasion of Ukraine have begun to fade easing the restrictions on demand and reducing the costs of inventory. While this is positive news for the industry, it does bring potential challenges for electrical wholesalers who have purchased items at increased costs during times of higher rates of inflation and when supply was restricted. Keeping a tight rein on your stock is essential, with a strong ERP system, such as K8, a business’s entire stock is opened up to assessment and analysis. It’s simple to rebalance supply and demand, purchasing and sales, movements, and replenishments, allowing business to significantly improve their ability to respond to changes within the market. Prices can be electronically uploaded from suppliers to ensure they're always up-todate, customer prices are based on purchase prices to ensure you retain a profitable business. Being able to gain full visibility and track stock movements, transfers, and availability in an instant

Businesses are becoming more and more vulnerable to the threat of increasingly sophisticated cyber-attacks than ever before as cyber criminals harness the power of AI. Attacks can lead to complete loss of systems and data, exposure to hackers, and poor performance. Data security should never be overlooked, selecting a reputable ERP provider will ensure that best practices are followed with regards to data authentication, access control and encryption.

If you aren't already using cloud software, then it's time to mitigate these risks and make the switch. Running your business solution on-premise, your hardware and the operating systems used to run it could be outdated and be at risk of failureespecially if you haven't upgraded in the last few years. All KCS solutions are available as SaaS in the cloud. This offers enhanced data protection and real flexibility in how you work.

JUST THE JOB

Job management software is helping electrical contractors and wholesalers increase efficiency and produce sales data of real value, explains James Chillman, UK Country Manager of Fergus.

Over the last few years there has been a significant rise in the use of job management software by hard working professionals, many of whom shop at their local electrical wholesaler. The reasons for this move are many, but the main drivers include automating tasks, decluttering administration and moving to a system that helps electricians to grow their business, giving them the time back to do the things they love.

Job management software, like Fergus, allows electrical contractors to become more efficient, manage their teams, invoice on time and monitor profit levels on every single job. It also allows them to review and order materials from their preferred wholesaler. Over 26 electrical wholesalers, building and plumbing merchants, including Yesss Electrical, Rexel, CEF and Edmundson Electrical, are now integrated on the platform, helping electrical contracting businesses to manage their supplier interactions, invoicing and job costing quickly, saving time and money.

For wholesalers, this integration has the potential to deliver valuable data on purchase patterns, levels and trends and adds a level of customer loyalty and convenience. Fergus was originally developed in New Zealand and soon grew in Australia too. Wholesalers in these

territories soon found that the integration with job management companies increased sales levels and opened up sales insights.

The supplier integrations allow automatic import of supplier invoices, directly matching line items to the appropriate jobs. This saves significant time for electricians as the painstaking process of manual invoice entry is eliminated, freeing up evenings and weekends that were once consumed by administrative tasks.

LUCECO LIGHTING BATTENS

When it comes to adaptability and sustainability in lighting, Luceco’s latest innovation delivers on both fronts. It’s two new LED lighting batten ranges – Climate and Luxpack Essence – designed for industrial lighting applications, have been developed to be kind to the environment and are simple to install – a real win for everyone, including wholesalers.

The two ranges have been designed to meet the differing needs of the industrial lighting market. Rugged Climate, being IP65 rated, is ideal for outdoor settings such as warehouses and car parks, whilst the Luxpack, with its white aesthetic and IP20 rating, is suitable for indoor spaces such as offices and garages, and enables wholesalers to offer their customers quality products for all applications.

Conceived with sustainability at its heart, both Climate and Luxpack are designed to be serviceable, with the LED board and driver units being easily replaced if required without the need for tools, just a few simple clicks is all that’s needed to remove and replace them – this modular feature dispenses with the need to replace the entire unit, saving not only time whilst on site but also significantly reduces the amount of waste ending up in landfill.

Inbuilt power and colour change switches add further flexibility for both ranges with two simple plug and play options allowing for configuration on site and eliminating the need to make decisions ahead of time. Each model or length has the ability to add microwave sensor or emergency packs that simply click into place, providing a host of customisable options.

Both the Climate and Luxpack ranges make installation faster and more accurate, thanks to the inclusion of colour-matched connectors and flexible first fix brackets, whilst the built-in power and colour change options make these pioneering LED lights adaptable for any industrial lighting project or space, meaning that, with by stocking these ranges, wholesalers are meeting the demand of installers for ease of installation with greater choice.

KNIGHTSBRIDGE STRIP LIGHTING

LED Flex strip lighting from Knightsbridge is ideal for creating ambient lighting in kitchens, bedrooms and other spaces deserving colourful and energy efficient accents.

Flex’s low profile – from 1.5mm to 2mm – and 8mm width makes it ideal for hard to access, spaceconstrained locations, while its 3M self-adhesive backing tape provides a robust and durable fixing. Waste is kept to a minimum because installers can cut the LED Flex to fit at 50mm intervals and use the excess elsewhere, reconnecting it to other strips of product where necessary.

Both single and four colour (red, green, blue and white) versions are available, supported by dedicated drivers, controllers and profiles that offer a quick solution to most indoor installations.

The colour-changing RGBW LED Flex are available with smart technology so they can be controlled through Knightsbridge’s proprietary SmartKnight app.

The company has also introduced ‘COB’ single colour seamless strip lighting. COB stands for Chip on Board, meaning the LED diodes are built directly into the printed circuit board. The seamless strip lighting is ideal for illuminating indoor spaces since it offers a larger lighting area than traditional alternatives, resulting in no dark spots and perfect colour consistency and uniformity. The COB strip lighting is supplied with 150mm of cable and is dimmable with the appropriate control.

Rated IP20 for indoor use, the 12V single colour range offers colour temperatures from 3000K to 6500K and light outputs from 510lm per metre upwards in white only. Its 24V equivalent is also for indoor use, but available in various colour temperatures of white as well as red, blue and green. The colour-changing models are rated at IP20 for indoor use and IP67 options are also available.

SOCKET TESTER HOLDER

CEF has launched a new industry product, designed by a loyal CEF customer. The JAKODA Socket Tester Holder, created by Duncan Thomson, using components from his local store, is now available to purchase across 400+ CEF branches and online.

Duncan, an electrician himself, has solved a significant problem for professionals in the industry –socket testers being damaged while loose in tool bags. After introducing the product to his local store and a few posts on his Instagram page, Surf Bay Spark, it quickly gained popularity in his local area and with tradesmen around the UK. He continued producing them at home and eventually, as demand grew bigger, he was approached by one of CEF’S own suppliers, Super Rod, to assist.

Nicole Juday, Board Chair of the IDEAL Industries Foundation, explains how to set up a corporate programme and highlights some of the organisations the Foundation supports and how such initiatives can boost employee engagement.

“ With a bit of forethought and planning, businesses can create a simple framework to help identify the types of organisations that makes the best business sense to support.”

Many companies in the electrical industry participate in some form of charitable giving, even if they may not identify as having a corporate philanthropy program. Requests to sponsor a local youth sports team, underwrite an industry event, or support a civic or educational initiative are some of the most common asks of companies of all sizes. With a bit of forethought and planning, businesses can create a simple framework to help identify the types of organisations that makes the best business sense to support.

Knowledge of the local laws

First, understand the laws where your company is based (or work with someone who does.) Legal restrictions around corporate philanthropy are not overly complicated, but there are clear

parameters around what qualifies as a charitable activity or programmerelated expense, particularly if the company wishes to take a tax deduction. Having the right structure and governance in place is also important.

Develop a framework

The next step is to devise a framework for what kind of activity your company will (and will not) typically support. This is most effective when companies adopt a proactive approach. Instead of considering every incoming request individually, identify one or several priority areas that will allow for greatest impact. Consider whether funding a request could expose your business to new customers, differentiate it from competition, attract and retain quality talent, or increase employee engagement. Establishing criteria for giving may mean having to turn

48 APRIL2024 PROFESSIONAL ELECTRICIANS WHOLESALER

down requests for worthy causes that fall outside of the giving priorities, but it allows companies to consider and evaluate requests efficiently and to avoid a scattershot, reactive approach to charitable giving.

Prioritising types of giving

At the IDEAL Foundation, corporate philanthropy is segmented into several categories. Roughly a third of our annual giving goes to seven social service organisations located in the geographic area of the company’s headquarters. We believe that communities are strongest and most vibrant when no one is left behind, and our giving targets organisations serving the most vulnerable in the community from which we draw many of our employees, making the area a better place to live and work for all.

Our other primary focus area is increasing diversity in the skilled trades. In the US, over 90% of skilled tradespeople are white males in a sector with significant current and projected worker shortages. We support organisations that help non-traditional groups enter and stay in the trades, increasing the labour force pipeline and strengthening the future health and prosperity of our industry.

Consider other types of giving as well. Many corporate sponsorships qualify as charitable donations, as do product donations to non-profit organisations, which are considered gifts in kind.

“ We support organisations that help non-traditional groups enter and stay in the trades, increasing the labour force pipeline and strengthening the future health and prosperity of our industry.”

Through the IDEAL Foundation, IDEAL Industries donated more than $50,000 worth of tools in 2023. Announcements of these donations often were incorporated into IDEAL’s social media strategy, as in the case of a donation made to equip tools to Rosie’s Girls, a pre-apprenticeship electrical training programme for women run through the IBEW Local 98 in Philadelphia. This type of online presence is a great differentiator for the company and helps IDEAL stand out in the competition for talent by demonstrating our values –an increasingly important consideration among prospective employees.

Elevating employee engagement

Companies can also use philanthropy as an effective tool for engaging employees. Last year, the IDEAL Foundation began matching employees’ charitable donations. This year brought some new campaigns. During International Women’s Month, for every charitable donation made by an employee the Foundation made a donation to Chicago Women in the Trades, an organisation helping women enter and stay in the skilled

trades. And by leveraging relationships with the local non-profits the Foundation supports, we’ve been able to conduct a series of volunteer activities for employees during the workday, such as making mental health kits for youth and hygiene kits for low-income seniors. These activities were well received by employees who appreciated this easily accessible opportunity to be of service to their communities by spending just a few minutes of their time.

Communicate your progress

An important component of a corporate philanthropy program is to make sure you have a way to keep track of all the great work your company is doing! Capturing the total value of charitable donationscash, products, and/or services - makes it possible to share your story with your employees, customers and communities. Recording the number of hours employees donate through a volunteer time-off policy helps your company gain credibility among prospective hires. In an era where companies are increasingly requested or required to provide metrics beyond what would have been necessary in the past, having a system for keeping up to date documentation is crucial. It also allows companies to analyse the impact of their programs over time and create and maintain goals for their philanthropic activities.

As the world increasingly looks to industry to provide solutions for environmental and social issues, establishing a corporate philanthropy programme is as strategic as it is altruistic. Starting with what seems manageable and taking incremental steps to increase impact is both an investment in the future of your business and in the greater good.
