JUST LIKE THAT IT’S DECEMBER!

I

n a blink of an eye 2023 is nearly over and we are heading towards another new year. We’ve had highs and we’ve had lows but generally speaking the industry has had a pretty decent year. So, what has 2023 given us? Here are some of the highlights from the PEW editorial office……. don’t shoot the messenger! Top of the list for me was the Rugby World Cup although obviously it would have been better if England had won! I should probably also mention the FIFA Women’s World Cup just to keep things equal in the sporting stakes. The next highlight was slightly controversial in that it was an equal split between Barbie and Oppenheimer…. Not wanting to engage in the ongoing office debate I’m going to give them both equal billing – I will leave you to decide if one is more worthy than the other! For the space enthusiasts amongst you I am going to include the fact that India became the fourth nation to successfully land a spacecraft on the Moon with the touchdown of its Chandrayaan-3 Moon Lander on the unexplored south pole. Then we move to music – love him or hate him Harry Styles apparently lit up the music scene with his album ‘Harry’s House’ which earned him a Grammy Award for Album of the Year – I did say don’t shoot the messenger! We can’t do a rundown of the highlights of 2023 without mentioning The Coronation of The King and the Queen Consort in May – the first coronation in the UK for almost 70 years which earned us all an extra Bank Holiday. We also absolutely have to mention the hosting of Eurovision in Liverpool (didn’t Liverpool do us proud!) and Elton John – I mean what an absolute legend! If you missed his headline act at Glastonbury then you definitely need to add it to your ‘one to watch’ list. I feel that I should end this with something that is actually related to the electrical industry, so I am going to go with the fact that the market for smart technology continues to grow. I appreciate this news isn’t up there with landing on the moon, but it is something which is very positive for our industry – long may it continue. See you in 2024.

NEWS & VIEWS INTEGRAL OPENS NEW WAREHOUSE

INTEGRAL LED OPENS NEW LOGISTICS HUB Integral LED’s new lighting warehouse is now fully operational. Integral LED say the Calverton warehouse is using innovative solutions including articulated forklifts to accommodate larger stock holdings, as well as the site having potential for further development to allow for future growth. Sales Director, Jon Rogers said: “Integral LED continues to expand its

product range to offer our customers better solutions and more choice of LED products. As part of that plan, we have moved to a new five acre logistics facility in Nottingham which will support our growth and provide our customers with a more efficient service. Being more centrally located will allow us to take and ship orders later in the day and offer higher stock levels available for

immediate despatch and next day deliveries, supporting our customers to make more sales. “We continue to listen to our customers’ needs and are always keen to receive feedback on how we can better our service and our product offering.”

SCHNEIDER ELECTRIC FINALISES ECOACT ACQUISITION Schneider Electric has announced that it has finalised the acquisition of EcoAct - an international leader in climate consulting and net zero solutions. The completion of the transaction follows consultation with the relevant employee representative bodies and approval from the competent regulatory authorities. EcoAct’s portfolio of net zero and nature-based products and services,

including consulting, climate data tools, and carbon offset project development, will expand and accelerate Schneider Electric’s global sustainability business. The joining of the two organizations expands Schneider Electric’s capabilities to provide end-to-end solutions that lead organisations through the net zero transformation and beyond. “We have long admired the team at EcoAct, and bringing our two

organisations together will help us to accelerate the ability to serve our clients all over the world,” said Steve Wilhite, President, Sustainability Business. “Companies understand the urgency to act but continue to face complexities when it comes to decarbonisation. I’m confident that our combined best-in-class teams will help our clients to accelerate even faster towards their net zero ambitions.”

JCC LIGHTING ACHIEVES CARBON NEUTRALITY JCC Lighting has become a carbonneutral organization, seven years ahead of its 2030 target. This significant milestone takes Leviton’s commitment to becoming a carbon neutral group another step forward. In 2022, Leviton announced its climate change goal to achieve company-wide carbon neutrality by 2030 and its ambition to achieve Net-Zero Carbon by 2050. This carbon neutral journey involved a multi-faceted approach that encompassed various key areas: Renewable energy adoption: Since moving to the 86,000ft2 facility Lux Park, JCC Lighting has transitioned its electrical energy sources to predominantly solar power. The roof is adorned with 1,300 solar panels, significantly reducing carbon

emissions. In addition to this, a fleet of cars has been replaced with hybrid vehicles along with the installation of EV charge points at head office. Product development: JCC has continued to drive improvements across product lines with a focus on energy efficiency and ease of installation. By designing and manufacturing products

that are environmentally responsible JCC empowers customers to make sustainable choices without compromising on quality. Carbon offsetting: Recognising that some emissions are unavoidable, JCC has invested in a carbon offset project. The first project chosen is solar electricity production in the Indian Rajasthan state. Steve Kirby, Managing Director of JCC Lighting, commented: "At JCC Lighting, we understand the urgent need to address climate change. Our journey towards carbon neutrality has been challenging yet rewarding, and it reflects our commitment to being a responsible organization, supporting Leviton’s goals and empowering our customers to provide sustainable solutions.”

RECOLIGHT ANNOUNCES REUSE HUB

RECOLIGHT LAUNCHES REUSE HUB The Recolight Reuse Hub is a new digital marketplace for lighting - an online platform to facilitate the donation of new and used lighting products and equipment. Currently, there are considerable volumes of new and used lighting products that are needlessly recycled when they could be reused. Some are in very good condition before removal and therefore a lot of the value and embedded carbon is lost if they are recycled. Many manufacturers hold unsold stock and Recolight want to make it as easy as possible for companies to hand over surplus and used products to third-parties, who can put them to good use. The Recolight Reuse Hub allows

donors of such products to link up with potential recipients; companies that could use the donated products. The Reuse Hub is the first of its kind for the donation, reuse, and remanufacture of lighting products. Donors can offer both unused, unsold lighting stock and used but reusable lighting equipment that may be suitable for remanufacturing, including those from CAT A and fit outs. Any type of organisation can sign up, including manufacturers, remanufacturers, specifiers, end users, charities, and more.

Even those lighting producers that are not yet members of the Recolight compliance scheme may participate. Companies can register as donors, recipients, or both. The Reuse Hub is currently free of charge for both donors and recipients. Francesca Cameron, Membership Coordinator at Recolight, and project manager of the new platform, said: “Recolight are thrilled to be launching this new platform. This is intended to become a vital way of avoiding waste, reducing unnecessary recycling, stimulating reuse, and responding to the climate emergency.”

NEWS & VIEWS BAXI LAUNCHES HEAT PUMP COURSES

BA XI LAUNCHES AIR SOURCE HEAT PUMP TRAINING Baxi has launched a full suite of air source heat pump (ASHP) training courses to support heating engineers and installers as they look to become more familiar with and qualified to install the increasingly popular technology. From understanding how air source heat pumps work to designing, installing and commissioning them, Baxi’s new courses have been developed to help installers work comfortably and efficiently with the technology, at every level of experience. The new ASHP courses, which are available at Baxi’s network of training centres across the UK, offer practical, hands-on training, all delivered by Baxi’s accredited training experts. For those starting out on their training with heat pumps, the ASHP Product Day explores the principles about how a heat pump works, the Baxi product range, installation considerations, the policy landscape and grants available to installers and customers.

For those looking to gain their Microgeneration Certification Scheme (MCS) accreditation, BPEC’s accredited ASHP Course is a hands-on programme that covers the principles of design, installation, commissioning, and servicing of ASHP systems. This course is delivered by Baxi and can include water regulation training for those who have not done their qualification. After a formal assessment

that leads to a nationally recognised BPEC qualification, heating engineers can use the qualification to demonstrate competence in heat pump installation for their MCS application. BPEC course applicants can now take advantage of the new government Heat Training Grant of up to £500 towards the cost of training. To further support engineers with the cost and time spent for qualification, those who take this up can also earn £1,000 worth of Baxi Works loyalty points once they register their first Baxi Air Source Heat Pump (ASHP) via the scheme. Finally, installers already fitting heat pumps with BPEC accreditation, or another recognised heat pump qualification, can take the Baxi Heat Pump Installer Training. The modular courses give in-depth knowledge and practical skills and are split into two parts – part one on design and application and part two on installation and commissioning of Baxi ASHP products and accessories.

ELECTRICAL SKILLS TIMEBOMB IN EASTERN ENGLAND As the electrification of the UK accelerates, Eastern England risks being left behind unless stakeholders in the region take urgent action. Low carbon technologies reduce energy use and lower bills, but without a skilled electrical workforce to install them, energy costs will continue to soar. Research by ECA shows Eastern England is facing a demographic timebomb with more electricians leaving the industry than new recruits entering. The evidence shows weak links between education and industry throughout the region are at the root of the problem. Installing low carbon technologies, such as electric vehicle charge points (EVCPs) and solar PV, are a subset of core electrical work. It is not possible to

decarbonise the region without more qualified electricians who understand integrating new technologies with existing systems. The story of Eastern England is a tale of two halves. One half – Essex, Hertfordshire, Norfolk and Suffolk – traditionally boasts some of the largest resident electrical workforces in England. The other half – Cambridgeshire & Peterborough and South East Midlands – some of the lowest. Even in the eastern half, the foundations of the local skills-base are built on sand. There is heavy reliance on electricians migrating into the area from elsewhere in the UK. Many of these people have been drawn in the past by opportunities in London.

8 DECEMBER 2023 PROFESSIONAL ELECTRICIANS WHOLESALER

The region’s electrical workforce is consequently the oldest in the UK, with almost half (43%) being 50 or over. The proportion of young people coming into the industry is, by contrast, nearly a third (30%) below the UK average. Apprentice recruitment rates in Essex, Hertfordshire, Norfolk and Suffolk are among the lowest in the country. Andrew Eldred, Director of Workforce and Public Affairs for the ECA, said: “We must ensure that further education providers in the region start to deliver more apprenticeships and other industry recognised training routes. This is vital if we are to defuse the looming demographic timebomb.”

SCOLMORE AND NIGLON SETTLE LONG-STANDING LEGAL DISPUTE Scolmore has announced that it has settled a long-running dispute with Niglon, which dates back to 2020. The dispute arose after Scolmore became aware of claims that Niglon had been making regarding its MEDIAN products in comparison to Scolmore’s MODE products. Scolmore subsequently sued Niglon for the infringement of Scolmore’s registered trade marks and for passing off its own goods as those of Scolmore. Following the settlement of the lengthy legal case, Niglon has paid substantial damages and costs to Scolmore and has apologised, with undertakings having been given by Niglon to the court to not repeat the infringements. In a statement about the settlement

which has been published by Niglon, the company accepted that its actions had amounted to trademark infringement and passing off, which it said it regretted and it further stated that it will not in future make any comparisons of the quality, source or origin of its products with Scolmore’s products. Niglon also confirmed that it agrees that its products are not made in the same factory or by use of the same moulds as those of Scolmore. Managing Director of Scolmore, Kevin Beech, said: “Whilst both parties are understandably pleased that we have now reached a settlement, Scolmore will always defend and protect its reputation, as it has in this case. Niglon’s products are not the same as, or equivalent to, Scolmore’s products. We also needed to

make it clear that Niglon’s products are unequivocally not made in the same factory as Scolmore’s products.” We have been working closely with a small number of select overseas factories for many years now and have built up a mutually respectful relationship with them. We have invested in these factories to ensure they have the best equipment, technologies and people in place to manufacture our products to the highest standards. All our products are designed in house in Tamworth, Staffordshire, by our specialist teams. Our partner factories work closely with the designers to work the designs up to samples and then finished products ready for market.”

CHARITY UPDATE

SHAPING CHANGE IN THE ELECTRICAL INDUSTRIES CHARITY As an inaugural member of the EIC’s Emerging Professionals Board, Deborah Graham-Wilson of Eland Cables reflects on her five-year tenure, the lessons learnt and what will shape the next hundred years across the breadth of the industry. Explain why your career path was best suited to have stood and served on the Emerging Professionals Board?

Q

A. When the Electrical Industries Charity Emerging Professionals Board was created back in 2017, it was my CEO who pushed me to put myself forward. I’m not sure I would have applied otherwise – a combination of the time commitment, an already heavy workload, and a sense of not being ‘good enough’ would have stopped me. I always thought Board members were those winding down their careers (no offence intended!!). The EP Board was to be comprised of 8-10 people who had less than 10 years of experience in the industry but were seen as rising stars within their organisation. It meant that the very fact I was new to the electrical industry (having started with Eland Cables in 2015) was one of the principal reasons I was chosen. The EP Board was about having a different perspective not yet entirely shaped by time in the industry which meant most members were in their mid-to-late 20s (although I was nearly 40 at the time). Unlike a number of my fellow EP board members, I was new to the industry but not new to the world of work. I’d joined Eland Cables in 2015 as Marketing Manager but I’d had a varied career to date – a bar in Tokyo, the trading floor of a bank in London, a mobile marketing software company in Gibraltar… and that eclectic mix of environments was, for once, a benefit in casting a different viewpoint. The Emerging Professionals Board is there to assist the Board of Trustees and the CEO in reviewing plans for the year ahead and help this established charity stay

relevant to people coming into the industry. We can be a sounding board for ideas, and also help spread the word through our own networks, championing the work of the charity at a more grassroots level than perhaps the senior board members are able to do. My ‘past life’ was an asset as I had experience of similar events or challenges that I could use as a benchmark.

there’s historically been a reluctance to talk about mental health issues. Add to that, it’s not known for being cutting-edge with digital technology which means getting the message out to those who need to hear it can be difficult. Signposting where people can get help is an ongoing challenge – fundraising to support that help is even more difficult.

What are current issues facing the industry, which go on to create life challenges for workers?

During your tenure, what advances and ideas were you part of that you’ve seen have made a difference to people working in the industry?

Q

A. The challenges facing the electrical industry are in some ways simply reflective of current life – a cost of living crisis, 1-in-2 people experiencing cancer (or other serious medical conditions) – but also unique in many ways. There’s a high rate of suicide and divorce in the industry; you have the major employers but you also have many small businesses where an owner/operator might be struggling to keep paying staff as costs rise; apprentices finding it hard to stay in the industry as living costs spiral; and in a predominantly male industry,

Q

A. During my time on the EP Board there’s been a positive shift towards greater inclusivity. The focus on mental health has come to the fore – an area that everyone can benefit from. A greater breadth of events also gives more opportunity for people of all levels to get involved – after all, gala black tie dinners are lovely but costly and tend to only be attended by the senior team rather than those coming up through the ranks.

PROFESSIONAL ELECTRICIANS WHOLESALER DECEMBER 2023 13

013_PEW_DEC23_Layout 1 13/11/2023 15:52 Page 14

CHARITY UPDATE

The challenge is to balance what’s always been done (appealing to an engaged but perhaps ageing audience and therefore bringing in a reliable but potentially dwindling source of revenue) with exploring new opportunities that have the potential to reach more people but need thought as to the fundraising model. It’s something the charity continues to try to manage.

Q

What are your frustrations with affecting change in the industry?

A. Work with a charity compared to my day job with Eland Cables is chalk and cheese. At Eland, it’s fast-paced, both reactive and proactive, with any initiatives being quickly evaluated and put into effect as appropriate. It’s a nippy speedboat compared to the tanker that is working in the charity sector. That’s to be expected, if a little frustrating. Quarterly EP Board meetings followed by the main Board of Trustees meeting means the pace of change is necessarily slower, plus generally events are planned a year in advance. There’s more need for consensus and less opportunity to directly ‘do’ as a Board member rather than an employee. As someone who relishes just getting on with it, it remains something I have struggled to adapt to. The charity is also trying to engage with and speak to a broad audience. It means social engagement can be a challenge – so many messages across so many themes. When much of the work that goes on is handled on a strictly confidential basis, it can be tough to make it emotive and real to people in a 60-character tweet! That said, it’s understandable when you’re trying to reach out to people in crisis – you need to be assured that as a Charity, there will be the funding and provisions to aid them. There isn’t the same option as in business to be agile iterate, test, and potentially fail fast… but I have faith that these ideas and changes will come to fruition in time.

Q

What’s changed post Covid?

A. The post-Covid world has definitely changed – the themes have changed – the potential feelings of isolation working from home, the awareness of health and wellbeing, and an increased sense of

community. Yet I think at the same time many businesses have recognised this, embrace those responsibilities, and have gone further to support their staff – I know we have. And maybe that has, in part, created a shift in the target audience of the charity too. If more corporates are providing these enhanced ESG provisions, does it mean that the EIC is focused on the SMEs and sole traders where there aren’t necessarily the funds to do this? Or are the issues that corporate employees reach out to the charity for just that much more complex as they feel it’s beyond the scope of their companies (or just ‘too much’ to approach a boss with)? ESG is the buzz term every business is keen to embrace, what do think will get individual workers engaged and interested in it, in a meaningful way?

Q

A. ESG is definitely the buzz term of choice for many corporates across the wider electrical industry. Environmental sustainability and ethical corporate governance are a must, but it’s often the ‘Social’ element that has individual workers engaged. And post-Covid that’s been one of the things I’ve seen change internally – people are more focused on their local community and charities such as the Trussell Trust and their foodbanks than perhaps on an industry-specific charity. Covid helped locate people within a community – you got to know your neighbours, and in turn, you got to learn about their struggles as well as your own. We’ve been encouraged by colleagues to support local initiatives because they’ve got friends and family who directly use them - it makes raising awareness of the EIC and the services available that much more of a challenge. With only a finite amount of funds for charitable activities (no matter how large that may be), it’s a tougher sell than the feel-good factor of supporting hyper-local. Don’t get me wrong – the work the EIC does is invaluable, but you only really think about it if you need to use the services yourself. The undoubted need for confidentiality works against that groundswell of good feeling.

Q

Why are you stepping down after five years?

14 DECEMBER 2023 PROFESSIONAL ELECTRICIANS WHOLESALER

A. So why step down now? Have I achieved all I hoped for when I set out on this EP Board journey – no, but maybe those aims were unrealistic. I’ve seen the inner workings of how a charity operates and what’s been achieved has happened as fast as feasible. The simple answer is that the EP Board is a group of people that needs churn. I’ve ‘emerged’ as much as I think I ever will (I obviously hope to continue my rise through Eland Cables). My role at work has also changed over the years – I’m in a position to enact change internally and feel I can be more effective focused on this than spreading myself thinner. I’ve gained an understanding of what the charity sets out to do, and how that can work to support my colleagues. The profile of the charity internally has been raised and I’m told that people are using the services where needed. Giving space for new ‘rising stars’ to join the EP Board with fresh ideas and their finger on the pulse is hugely important. Being part of the EP Board gave me the confidence that I had a place in the industry (over and above a place in my company) – as part of that confidence it’s time to step aside and let someone else take on the mantle. What’s your biggest wish for how individuals should think of the EIC and work with it best?

Q

A. The role of the charity is to provide support when it feels like no one else can. My wish going forward is that those who need it most remember that the charity is there for them; and that the charity can adapt to support the challenges the industry faces now and in the future. Given they can never share details of the individual cases they support, they need to engage corporate donors by giving their support visibility – if they can’t tell the company who it’s helped on their behalf, then needs to add to a wider ESG message to industry and customers alike. Whilst I can no longer have influence in how that’s delivered, what I can do is continue to ensure the EIC remains visible to my colleagues.

FACE TO FACE

In the month’s Face to Face we speak to Ian Arbuckle, CEO at LINIAN, to find out how he got started and his future plans for the company.

FACE TO FACE LINIAN Q

What is your background in the industry and how did you get involved with LINIAN?

What are the differences between the various LINIAN cable clip ranges?

A. I started as an apprentice electrician at 16 after leaving school. I progressed to an electrical foreman and then project manager role on qualification whist attending night school to obtain my electrical engineering qualification. I left the tools relatively quickly at the age of 23 to enter an electrical design role with a prominent building services consultancy. I became involved in LINIAN whilst working in this role. When the premature collapse regs first surfaced under BS7671 Amendment 3, I had a casual conversation with my sister Lynne over dinner at our parents regarding the changes, the reasons behind them and the fact that the patented fire alarm cable clip, previously designed and developed by our parents a few years back whilst running their own wholesale business, was a great engineering solution to what the industry was seeking to do. Lynne was on maternity leave from her job in construction sales at the time and being a talented salesperson, didn’t want to see the opportunity missed. Lynne formulated a sales plan and again, due to the aforementioned talent, quickly had customers lined up. In my spare time I supported her with the technical side such as regulation compliance and intellectual property.

A. The main ranges are the Fire Clip, Super Clip, T&E Clip and Nano Clip. The main differences are their size and tensile strength i.e. the weight they can retain. All of our ranges are fire rated to prevent premature collapse of cables. The Fire Clip range is named as such as it started as a product for fire alarm systems which have pretty much always required the fixings to be metallic. Each clip is capable of retaining an impressive 24kg, that the equivalent of a bag of cement! The range supports cables from 4mm overall diameter up to 11mm overall diameter. We have “double versions” of the common sizes to replace the outdated saddle clips. These retain two cables side by side using a single fixing hole, dispensing with the need for two screws to retain a single clip which is a ‘game changer’ for installers (their words not mine!). Super Clips are “Super” versions of the same product effectively. They accommodate heavier cables such as SWA, conduits and bunches of multiple smaller cables. Each super clip is capable of supporting a whopping 44kg to accommodate heavier cables and conduits. T&E Clips are the same as fire clips with a head shaped to neatly accommodate flat twin and CPC cables. Our most recent Nano Clip range was designed for and is

Q

Q

What is a LINIAN Clip and how does it work?

A. A LINIAN Clip is a super simple but effective concept. Previous methods of fixing cables to prevent premature collapse all involved either screws or nails plus a clip and commonly an anchor such as a plastic plug. LINIAN Clips are a single fire rated steel component that use a combination of tension and friction to remain in place. The clip is placed over the cable and the barbed steel legs of the clip act as the anchor. They are compressed together and inserted into a drilled hole where they grip using the above method. The cable is locked in place as it then “inside” the metal clip.

commonly used in the fibre optics cable industry. It’s a discreet solution for installing fibre cables which can be as small as 0.9mm! That’s why we have Nano Clips to accommodate cables from 0.9mm up to 4mm. How does LINIAN help to promote best practice in the electrical sector?

Q

A. I have championed best practice throughout my career. It goes with the turf in design engineering. In fact, it is the turf. Ensuring our designs are installed competently and to standards is the job. I was keen to use this and continue this when I came into LINIAN so I believe I have done so effectively. The main way is to ensure our suite of testing was the most comprehensive and transparent if any product in our sector which it still is. If you request LINIAN product testing documentation you will find that we don’t just offer the standard one page, vague, rubberstamp exercise that our competitors do. We have in depth test information and are very open about sharing this. We worked with recognised industry test houses early on to establish a testing regime specific to our products. Lynne and I put out names on the product and company so when it comes to compliance, we put our money where our mouth is. Our focus is on the Premature Collapse Regulations compliance and our products are ensuring maximum safety for the emergency services. This is an essential part of our mission as we help saving lives. What are some of the key challenges facing the industry right now?

Q

We have in depth test information and are very open “about sharing this. We worked with recognised industry test houses early on to establish a testing regime specific to our products.

A. There are a few in all honesty. The regulations around premature collapse have been developing constantly since the initial mention in BS7671:2015 Amendment 3 and it’s still not as clear as it could be for the installer although it is improving. BEAMA have done some great work in this respect, and I usually point to their Guide to Premature Collapse for those seeking clarity. It’s a helpful and free document that does what it says on the tin. Another challenge is electric vehicles. The governments Net Zero agenda and targets places significant pressure on our industry to get the infrastructure in place and the concern is that will ultimately lead to corners being cut. And, a final challenge is the war to win talent in our industry but I have written an entire article for Professional Electrician on this subject so you will have to wait for that!

Q

What are LINIAN’s goals for the future?

A. Our ethos is right there on the company tag line - Faster, Safer, Simpler and that’s what we aim to continue doing. Developing products and solutions that meet those three criteria is the core of the LINIAN business.

We have many new innovations in the pipeline for both the electrical and telecommunications sectors and we will keep working to bring these to market. We have also established ourselves as problem solvers though product innovation so the calls for innovation from our current and new customers are coming thick and fast. Just the way we like it. There can’t be many CEO’s out there who are happy to say keep the problems coming folks, but I will and I do. By bringing us the challenges we get to satisfy, or customers’ needs by doing what we live and what we are good at. When my sister Lynne and I first came into LINIAN it had no employees, a single product in a single colour, no manufacturing base, and no customers. We now have over 135 products, a manufacturing facility in our home city of Glasgow, keeping manufacturing on shore and employing a fantastic team of 10 employees. LINIAN is turning over north of seven figures and an impressive rate of year-on-year growth. Our goal is simple – we keep going strong. TO FIND OUT MORE ABOUT LINIAN VISIT: WWW.RDR.LINK/WAP003

SPECIAL REPORT

LIGHT SOURCE Russell Parr, CEO at PowerLed, explains the characteristics electrical wholesalers should seek in an LED solutions supplier.

T

he task of sourcing the right LED lighting products has become increasingly difficult for electrical wholesalers. Not only are there more products available, but the pace of development means more advanced LEDs are constantly coming on the market. At the same time, customers are increasingly looking for specific solutions. With such challenges, procuring the right products depends on finding the right manufacturer.

A customer-first approach With many businesses seeking applicationspecific lighting, electrical wholesalers are better positioned to serve those customers by working with an LED and power supply partner that puts the client’s needs at the centre of its operations. This means finding a supplier that develops tailored solutions to suit various spaces and applications and which meet benchmarks in safety, reliability and efficiency. While a supplier’s mass production capabilities are vital to wholesalers wanting an uninterrupted supply chain, its expertise in power technology is crucial to ensure that the products are reliable, efficient and evolve over time to fulfil changing demands. A key indication of quality will be whether the supplier’s lighting solutions

use best-in-class components, like cuttingedge LED driver technology and advanced chipsets, while offering 50,000-hour lifespans. They should also combine energy efficiency with resource optimisation, in line with the Energy-related Products (ErP) directive, to improve performance, meet environmental standards and offer better returns on investment. Together with LEDs, electrical wholesalers will also require the supplier to offer top-quality power supplies, suitable for both internal and external environments. These should be CEapproved and certificated to meet UK, EU and international safety regulations, while providing compact designs, power factor correction, enhanced efficiency and durability. For reassurance, they should come with warranties of up to five years. Excellent customer support Choosing a supplier with a client-focused approach should also mean its products are backed by excellent customer service and support. With detailed technical information lacking for many lighting products available today, finding a supplier that provides expert advice and tailored technical design support can be invaluable for electrical wholesalers. This is especially the case, given that more end customers

18 DECEMBER 2023 PROFESSIONAL ELECTRICIANS WHOLESALER

are seeking high-quality LED drivers and lighting solutions across the gamut of applications, from retail, industrial and residential to public, office and gallery. Furthermore, as evolving LED technology continues to produce more light output per watt consumed, a supplier that uses lumens instead of watts as the primary metric for measuring luminosity can offer more accurate information about LED light quality and energy efficiency, helping buyers make smarter decisions. An established supplier With over 20 years’ experience, PowerLed is a trusted and expert supplier of lighting solutions. We have the know-how to help electrical wholesalers quickly and easily find best-in-class LED lighting and power solutions that are safe, reliable and costeffective. Rather than just supplying out-of-the-box products, we combine the best components to produce complete, tailored solutions suited to both your needs and those of your customers. You’ll also find our solutions are backed by excellent customer support together with generous warranty periods or lifetime values.

PLAYING

DUMB Paul Foulkes, Country Manager at Theben Automation, asks whether smart homes need dumb services.

E

veryone is talking about smart homes. Manufacturers can offer you the best heating control, or the most function packed lighting system. Sometimes, these ‘smart’ systems are no more than a light bulb, dependent on a hub, and Wi-Fi via your router. Hot water is supplied via a ‘smart’ water tank, run by artificial intelligence (AI). AI is the new “best thing since sliced bread”, following on from 'smart' or 'green’. The big house builders talk about 'smart,' but they actually want to avoid paying for any building infrastructure, apart from maybe an additional telephone point upstairs. Lot 20 regulation requires electric radiators to reach a minimum level of efficiency via inbuilt control mechanisms, including thermostats, timers, and even motion detection. The radiator manufacturers then add in (understandably) as much programming as possible, including Wi-Fi connection options. This can mean sometimes an additional hub is required and the system runs a proprietary protocol. Updates can lead to systems becoming obsolete and no longer supported. Individual wet radiators do not require this level of control complexity, but sometimes the boiler has a built-in control timer system. I know of hot water systems that apparently use AI to time the hot water!

Just for a second think about your domestic hot water (DHW) use. Most households will have regular times of use – we generally have routines in our day-to-day life. So maybe just a timer would be suitable? With an override when we are out of routine? So, maybe we need fewer smart services? How about getting back to dumb appliances controlled by one smart system? Layer of control Mechanical Ventilation and Heat Recovery (MVHR) is the perfect example for this. MVHR systems are super simple – two DC motors, in a box connected to trunking. No high pressure connections, no refrigerant fluids, no complex manifolds and valves. Once it is installed correctly it can be left to run on its own. But if you add a layer of control on top of the simple MVHR unit it can become more effective – the boost function can be controlled around humidity monitoring in defined rooms or occupancy to tackle CO levels (normally there is a humidity sensor in the MVHR unit which controls the boost, but it is distant from the humidity source). Boost can also be activated when the kitchen extractor has been running for a certain length of time to help clear cooking smells

20 DECEMBER 2023 PROFESSIONAL ELECTRICIANS WHOLESALER

and the summer purge can be linked to occupancy and temperature average across the whole home. It is not only the actual running of the system that can be controlled; maintenance schedules, such as predicting the filter change based on hours run, can also be included. I use MVHR as an example of how a ‘dumb’ product can be made to act smart. A single device will be measuring the CO readings used by the MVHR, but those CO levels could also be used to open roof windows for extra passive ventilation. Those same devices measure room temperature so not only can it be used for MVHR and summer purge ventilation control, but obviously also for heating. And that same temperature reading, when used in conjunction with lux levels, can be used for shading control – to prevent overheating in the summer but to use passive solar gain in the winter, reducing energy use. All of this does not require multiple smart products, it is actually easier, and far cheaper, to use dumb products with one smart control system. You don’t need a sophisticated (and probably high priced) AI-enabled hot water tank. You can simply read tank temperature (at different physical levels if it is a thermal store type installation with multiple heating coils and sources) and then create simple schedules around usage, or complex ones around usage,

SPECIAL REPORT

occupancy, most effective heat sources (solar thermal, solar PV ‘dump’, battery storage or supply tariff). And of course it is easy to add a simple hot water boost. Once established these ‘routines’ can be left alone, or tweaked as often as you want. If your tank fails (rare, but it is a possibility), then the replacement cost is considerably less. You just need a simple dumb tank. Rinse and repeat Wet heating systems using a boiler and radiators invariably rely on an external time clock, as most gas boilers are 'dumb'. If you add a Wi-Fi connected programmer the system becomes ‘smart’, or at least smarter. But why depend upon Wi-Fi? Our routines around heating our homes are virtually as repetitive as those around our hot water usage. Honestly, you don’t need AI for this! Add Wi-Fi functionality if you want to for additional features, but there is

no need to depend upon it. Back to electric heating: this would require a regulation change, but imagine the simple, and cost effective change over to electric heating if you could install dumb radiators with a centralised timer and programmer. Also, as mentioned about MVHR ventilation and wet heating systems, you could then integrate it into a complete home system, for instance utilising occupancy for further energy savings. High installation cost is often cited as a reason not to choose integrated smart home systems. This can be true, typically because when a client decides on a 'smart home,’ they tend to add a significant level of additional functionality or luxury, such as a cinema room (neither of which is essential). However, for a simple home, if you want to save energy, improve comfort, and add some additional functionality, this can be done at a reasonable price. Install dumb service appliances and the initial

outlay drops. Factor in simplified wiring that is faster to install and single devices for all control elements, and the total installation cost can become easily attainable. And that simplification reduces ongoing cost and dumb service appliances, as previously mentioned, will reduce the cost if any fail. Where does this all leave us? With ‘smart’ service appliances the outcome can be that some smart homes are a collection of disparate systems and gadgets, multiple apps and different manufacturers viewpoint of the best way to simplify your life. On the other hand, if you use one simple smart control protocol, you could utilise dumb services. Linking an effective, robust, open control protocol to dumb services really does make sense. LOCK

STOCK PEW hears from Kasp on the vital role safe isolation plays in ensuring electrical security.

I

n the world of electrical work, safe isolation is a fundamental part of an electrician’s role – not only to protect circuits but to protect people’s lives. While health and safety is already a top priority in high risk industries like construction, those who work regularly with known hazards can sometimes become complacent. In the electrical sector – the safe isolation of the electrical network cannot be overlooked. It’s an essential but often underestimated aspect of the job and is a key step in ensuring that workers on site aren’t exposed to danger when working on or near live electrical systems. Safe isolation is a multi-step process that involves not only turning off the power but also locking out the circuit to prevent accidental reactivation.

Sadly, over 1,000 electricity-related accidents are reported to the HSE every year, 30 of which lead to fatal injuries. When dealing with live electricity, there’s no room for error, the only way to ensure everyone’s safety is by adopting thorough isolation procedures. The opportunity for electrical wholesalers is clear; encouraging the usage of appropriate lock off devices as an essential piece of kit for professional electricians to protect themselves and others from potentially deadly consequences. The supply of this equipment is not only an opportunity to generate sales, but an opportunity to save lives. Keep assets secure With over 40 years of security expertise under its belt, Kasp is one of the UK’s leading security padlock, chain, and cable brands, created by Carl Kammerling International Ltd. Kasp Lockout is a range of essential tools designed specifically with safe isolation in mind, to protect electricians and their colleagues from accidents at work. Every year, thousands of injuries at work occur during the repair or maintenance of machinery, and most are due to a failure to

isolate energy sources. Kasp Lockout safeguards against a sudden release of energy, locking off energy sources using padlocks and physical security devices. Kasp Easifit MCB Lockout This universal mini circuit breaker isolates single, double, and triple switches. Its simple installation uses no tools, and quickly protects against dangerous energy surges while maintenance and repairs are carried out. To use, simply place the tool over the switch, tighten the easy-to-use thumb screw, rotate the screw toggle and lockout with a padlock. Made from quality, non-conductive material, the Kasp Easifit MCB Lockout is an essential part of any maintenance toolbox. Kasp 812 Pin Lockout Ideal for locking out wider miniature circuit breakers, this pin lockout uses a simple push button installation, so no tools are required. Made from high quality, nonconductive material, the pin lockout works with one padlock and fits a maximum shackle diameter of 6mm. Kasp MCB Lockout Kit This unique kit contains all the essential parts to lock off one mini circuit breaker. The kit includes an Easifit MCB Lockout, one

ultimate van lock. Meanwhile, the hasp is made from zinc plated heavy duty steel, giving excellent security and protection against corrosion. It is supplied with fixing bolts and includes a nifty storage bracket to hold the padlock when the van is open.

25mm brass padlock, a danger and identity tag, and a carabiner to hold the kit together. Essential Lockout Kit This kit is ideal for a broad range of circuit breakers, including those over 60 A. It’s easy to use and contains both the Easifit MCB Lockout and the Pin Out Wide Lockout. F Fitting neatly into a sturdy red pouch with a carabiner for hands-free access, the kit also contains a 40mm red vinyl coloured brass padlock with brass shackle, a 25mm brass padlock, a lock off hasp, a tagout marker pen, and a danger tag. Protection for electrician’s assets According to Met Police data, nearly 35,000 tools were stolen in the capital city alone between January 2021 and October 2022. A third of those tools were stolen from vehicles. Kasp Van Locks provide the ultimate defence for tradespeople seeking to protect their vehicles.

Kasp 500 Van Lock and Hasp Designed just for vans, the Kasp 500 Van Lock’s chrome plated hardened steel body gives incredible strength as well as protection from corrosion. A shrouded steel shackle offers the ultimate safeguard against hacksaw and cropping attacks, while its sixpin cylinder defends against lock picking. With a corrosion resistant mechanism to protect against the elements, this is the

Conclusion Safe isolation is more than just a routine task for an electrician – it’s arguably the most important part of their role and demonstrates their commitment to prioritising the protection of others. Electrical professionals should be actively encouraged to utilise the latest technologies and equipment available to them to make every day electrical work safer for all involved. The consequences of not doing so are simply too great.

SECURITY & CCTV

GOING

LARGE With the CCTV market continuing to show strong growth, ESP believes wholesalers are in a prime position to help drive up sales of higher specification systems for larger, commercial projects.

W

hile health and safety is already a top priority in high risk industries like construction, those who work regularly with known hazards can sometimes become complacent. In the electrical sector – the safe isolation of the electrical network cannot be overlooked. With CCTV accounting for the largest part of the electronic security sector, there is plenty of opportunity for wholesalers and contractors to take a share of this growing market. For many installers working within the electrical industry, and the wholesalers supplying them, CCTV will be seen as a security solution mainly for the domestic end of the market. However, according to ESP, with the right knowledge of the products, solutions and support services available to satisfy larger, more complex projects, wholesalers are in a prime position to target those customers with more specialist requirements. This is where it pays for wholesalers to partner up with a reputable supplier who can not only provide a comprehensive range of security solutions to cover a wide variety of project applications, but also has the expertise and experience in the planning, design and ongoing support that will reassure contractors that they will be providing the best possible security solution for their clients.

ESP has been supplying CCTV solutions for the professional installer market for over 25 years and continues to invest in the development of the range to make sure that contractors have access to systems that harness the latest technologies, are quick and easy to install and boast a raft of features and benefits. The latest development of the category saw the launch of the 24/7 Colour IP POE CCTV range, which takes the company’s CCTV offer to another level. Sharp detail When it comes to CCTV security, colourrelated information can play a vital role in identifying the detail of activities, particularly in the hours of darkness.

Wholesalers are in a “prime position to target those customers with more specialist requirements.

Conventional cameras with infrared lighting will only provide black and white images for night-time monitoring. This can result in people or vehicles, for example, appearing blurred and blending into the background, making it difficult to discern crucial elements. Providing sharp detail, in colour, day or night, ESP’s 24/7 colour CCTV range is designed to offer superior, reliable and straightforward installation solutions for a range of applications from domestic through to larger and more complex commercial projects. With a total of 12 cameras offering a choice of 2MP, 5MP and 8MP resolution options, as well as a broad range of 8MP NVRs consisting of 4, 8, 16, 32 and 64 channel models, ESP really does have all size and range of security applications. The cameras use low light image sensors, which are able to use background light to produce a colour image in reduced light environments. If the background light is insufficient for the low light image sensors to

produce a colour image, the white LEDs on the cameras have the facility to activate by virtual line crossing and permitter intrusion set by the user. By providing 8MP recording, the NVRs offer support for high resolution cameras in record, playback and live view modes. Pre-planning is vital For these CCTV projects that require larger systems and specific cameras, ESP believes that pre-planning is vital and that producing and working to a professional design will mean the best possible system is specified to get the best results on site. The design service is able to generate computer generated models of a system’s live view from the cameras, a useful tool to ensure a client will have a good understanding of the camera angles and views before committing to the system. As

well as providing computer generated previews from the camera locations, the service will provide recommendations for the total amount of cable required for installation, suitable hard drive capacity and will also highlight the record duration, resolution and ESP camera part number required - making specifying an installation simpler.

With access to a comprehensive range of CCTV systems as well as the support of a highly experienced technical team, contractors can also take advantage of ESP’s specialist design service. A team of dedicated design engineers will work with professional installers to assist with specifying the right system for projectbased applications. When talking to their customers, wholesalers are in a position to discuss all areas of support and service, in addition to the products and solutions that manufacturers can offer. RENEWABLES

ON THE

CHARGE

With the popularity of EV ownership continuing to rise, being aware of the latest technologies is essential – especially as smart chargers become an ever-more common feature in UK homes. PEW spoke with Jordan Brompton, co-founder and CMO of myenergi, to find out more.

G

rowing EV demand in the UK is more than just a trend, it’s the representation of a societal and industrial shift to minimise the impact of the climate crisis. Over the past few months, data shows that a new EV was registered every 60 seconds in the UK. As a result, EVs now make up 35.4% of the UK’s new car sales – an astonishing 87.9% year-on-year increase. Considering that, just five years ago, the market share for all ‘alternatively fuelled vehicles’ was only 8%, its fair to say that the transition to electrification is well and truly underway.

EV charging fundamentals Given the magnitude and speed of this change, understanding the various charging technologies and latest innovations is essential to meeting and predicting demand. Just as the transport industry has evolved, so too have the charging systems used to keep these vehicles moving. From rapid charging to intelligent home systems that protect the

grid, novel technologies are enabling a more sustainable transport system. The charging landscape for electric vehicles consists of three main levels. ‘Slow charging’ simply involves plugging the car into a wall socket, achieving around 2kW of power and taking 30 to 40 hours to charge an EV. This is not very common and seldom used, clearly not particularly practical. ‘Fast charging’ uses a conveniently mounted charging system and standard 240V AC supply. Depending on the home or building, the supply will determine the power available. Our zappi charger, for example, comes in both 7kW and 22kW variants, with the first designed for singlephase homes and the latter for three-phase

Understanding the “various charging technologies and latest innovations is essential to meeting and predicting demand.

30 DECEMBER 2023 PROFESSIONAL ELECTRICIANS WHOLESALER

properties. Chargers like the 7kW zappi can recharge the average electric car from empty in a little over seven hours, making them perfect for overnight recharging. Then comes the ‘rapid charging’. From 50kW to 350kW, users can reach 80% vehicle charge in between 20 and 40 minutes. This infrastructure-level network is designed to support long-distance journeys and not necessarily ‘daily’ charging. The latest charging innovations Charging technologies extend far beyond plugging in and topping up. Things like bidirectional charging, for example, which allows electric vehicles to not only receive energy from the grid but also send it back, acting as a modular, spread-out battery system. It brings some interesting benefits, including reductions in grid instability and energy storage during power outages. For those seeking added peace of mind, home battery systems are also growing in popularity, particularly among those with self-generated renewables seeking energy independence.

030_PEW_DEC23_Layout 1 13/11/2023 16:42 Page 31

RENEWABLES

Another interesting idea is wireless charging. Yes, the very same used for your phone could soon be used for vehicles too. While it is likely a long way off, Tesla recently acquired a German start-up specialising in the technology. This could be an interesting solution for large parking structures and infrastructure, but probably far too expensive for domestic applications. What is smart charging? In the UK, smart charging is a governmentmandated system that uses data and energy innovations to deliver benefits to both consumers and the grid. It enables motorists to charge electric vehicles when electricity is cheaper or cleaner. Smart charging uses internet connectivity to intelligently adapt the entire network to meet demand, optimising efficiency by monitoring and responding to peaks and troughs. As of last year, all new charge points sold in the UK were required to

feature smart functionality, as well as complementary cyber and physical security systems.

can be seamlessly controlled through the myenergi app, actively facilitating the transition to electrification.

State-of-the-art at home Much of the discussion focuses on infrastructure and industry-led developments, but perhaps the most important shift arising from EV charging is at home. At myenergi, we have long championed energy independence and the integration of intelligent energy systems in domestic applications. Our smart EV charger, zappi, for example, has been designed to seamlessly integrate with renewable generation, giving motorists a ‘zero carbon’ recharging option at home. We’re also the brains behind eddi, a power diverter that maximises the utility of self-generated renewables by using excess energy to heat water or rooms; as well as libbi, a modular battery storage system. Each of our game-changing technologies

Ready to charge? The path to electrification is not simply about shifting from fossil fuel to electric vehicles, it is also a transition to smarter home energy systems and a robust, powerful charging infrastructure. As the UK continues to legislate more sustainable technologies for new build homes and charging networks, existing homeowners are also seeking eco-smart solutions. From basic wall-mounted chargers to complete home energy smart systems managing renewable generation and vehicle bidirectional charging, the landscape is dynamic and full of potential. TIMERS & CONTROLS

USER

MANUAL Users are benefiting from the market forces that are leading manufacturers to adopt a common Wi-Fi App platform. It means electricians have more opportunity to build smarter multi-application installations, combining different manufacturers products. Their customers can control it all with ease via a single app. As ever, it’s time control that is the core function – but don’t write off manual control just yet, says Andy Douglas, Managing Director at Timeguard.

D

oes everyone else’s email inbox get inundated with offers of market reports for specific product groups? You know, the global reports that are yours for just a few $1000s. Reading through the blurb. I always wonder if the full report is going to state very much more than the obvious. I suspect not. It seems from the teaser information on the latest wave of timer reports (global market 2023-2030), that the massive North American market dominates, and the western Europe leads in technical innovation. Driving markets are industrial users and lighting. Engines for change will be advanced manufacturing (bringing costs down) and artificial intelligence (AI), (which will probably also bring costs down as well as boosting control chip functionality). So, no surprises there.

Programmable logic has largely replaced traditional electro-mechanics, and opened up a whole new world of possibilities. Nevertheless, we still need to get the balance right and never lose track of the bottom line: devices must do the right job, do it well, and be easy for the owner to understand and make best use of.

At the end of the day, and as ever, all eyes remain on manufacturers to keep adding tech functionality and subtracting costs. Luckily there’s still scope to do just that, given that modern timeswitches are, in effect, single-chip computers.

Not quite out with the old In the channel, we focus on professional installers who are trying to balance customer expectations of control and functionality with price. They need to cater for all budgets, preferences, and applications. So it is that general purpose electromechanical switches do continue to sell for industrial/commercial as well as domestic use, alongside electronic cousins. They continue to sell at a steady rate – enough for us to continue to list and stock them. In industrial and commercial settings, key concerns are about loading, reliability and tamper-proofing as well as the everpresent need to demonstrate energy saving. From supporting heavier loads of lighting, heating and other electrical appliances, our NTT HD 20A heavy-duty models fit the bill. They now include a programmable loop function, which is great for pumps providing routine circulation, charging cycles for appliances utilising a battery back up power supply to save energy, or simply for allowing intervals on your circuit.

TIMERS & CONTROLS

They have a myriad of uses and are also planned available as OEM modules as well as for surface and pattress box installation. For domestic users, it’s how to control the timer that has dominated recent developments. Increasingly Wi-Fi control is seen as the norm and people who expect more from it. One app to control them all An overarching trend we’ve been looking at for some years now is how people want a single app to control multiple devices. Just as smart home users want a single control panel, the rest of us want a single app interface – and these days we’d quite like to be able to talk to it too! The argument is largely won in the marketplace. There are fewer proprietary apps and those that remain are often only minimally maintained. The market has

pretty much leapfrogged proprietary apps, other than is very specific uses. People want to control and integrate devices and appliances from multiple manufacturers from the same app, with the manufacturerindependent apps like Tuya Smart leading the way. They are proven, trusted, and well maintained with a rigorous licensing process that means products developed

using the application programming interface can be relied on. At Timeguard we’ve standardised on the TuYa app, which also offers voice control via Alexa and Google. It also enables us to build in great features such as colour temperature adjustment and HiLo control on our Wi-Fi floodlights and activation of other devices connected to the app so that walking by a PIR or a programmed timeswitch event will trigger a whole lighting and heating scene. Of course, mixing and matching is all very good, but a chain is only as strong as its weakest link. Never has been sticking to branded quality been more important.

TIMERS & CONTROLS

THE

HEAT IS ON

Matt Parton, Product Development Manager with Sangamo, answers some of the key questions relating to smart heating controls and energy saving measures.

With all homeowners looking to minimise energy costs, how can modern controls help get the best energy efficiency possible from a domestic heating system?

Q

A. Modern controls include features which reduce the amount of time a boiler is firing, which in turn will lead to reduced energy usage and therefore result in reduced costs. Having the heating on when the property is vacant or having no control over the set point temperature will result in an inefficient system. Features such as seven-day scheduling and thermostat control ensure that the boiler is firing when the property is most likely to be occupied and does not exceed the

desired temperature. In essence modern heating controls offer automation to a heating system and work to avoid energy wastage by setting a logical pattern of heating. This is in comparison to relying on an end user to manually control the system, which can be very time consuming and costly if the end user forgets to switch the heating off.

controls allow an “endSmart user to have full access to the operation of the control remotely via an app platform.

34 DECEMBER 2023 PROFESSIONAL ELECTRICIANS WHOLESALER

There are advanced features available such as optimum start/stop which analyses the warm up and cool down periods of the heating system. Due to this analysis the firing time of the boiler is reduced, thus saving energy. In addition, the feature ensures that the set temperature is reached by the system at the programmed time thus preventing the need for the user to change the set point temperature which accelerates the firing of the boiler and leads to energy wastage. With technology continually evolving, what benefits do the latest smart controls provide?

Q

A. Smart controls allow an end user to have full access to the operation of the control remotely via an app platform, which allows for settings and different modes to be adjusted remotely. This is particularly useful if there is a sudden change in the weather or in the user’s routine when settings can be modified accordingly. An app platform also provides the user with historic heating patterns and a current live view of the heating system status. This provides an understanding of which times of the day the boiler is firing and thus enables a user to analyse and fine tune the programming of the heating control

034_PEW_DEC23_Layout 1 13/11/2023 15:24 Page 35

TIMERS & CONTROLS

leading to a more efficient system. One of the most noted advances in recent years is the popularity of voice control through virtual assistance. For convenience, or for users with restricted mobility, voice activated features enable a user to verbally change the set temperature or programming to assist with heating comfort. In addition, smart features such as open window/ door detection will cancel a boiler firing until the temperature stabilises or other conditions are met. Smart controls that are linked together via an app can also provide a whole host of automation processes with other smart devices in the property.

Q

How important are the aesthetics of smart heating controls?

A. Due to the popularity of smart phones and apps, smart heating controls have become a popular consumer product in recent years. Market data shows that there is a high demand for smart heating controls and this is a sector in which consumers are willing to invest. Function, operation and design are essential elements to be considered when it comes to the development and creation of desirable product solutions. As well as general demand from consumers, there is an increasing requirement for design conscious heating controls for more commercial projects such as new builds and refurbishment projects. It is commonplace today to have a choice of wiring accessories and furniture and there is no reason why heating controls shouldn’t follow suit. Where once heating controls were considered a very functional product area, we are now seeing a trend towards more aesthetically designed solutions. Smart technology in general has seen a massive increase in demand and the expectation of modern, high-end, vanguard technology is for the product to be designed and packaged in a complementary manner. A look at the latest display solutions to help increase your in-store purchases.

PRIDE OF PLACE

T

his year, Aico has achieved the successful deployment of its latest point of sale (PoS) units. These units have been efficiently distributed to over 500 wholesalers nationwide. This accomplishment is a testament to Aico’s dedication to supporting its supply chain. Aico’s team of Regional Specification Managers (RSMs) worked in close collaboration with the well-established network of wholesalers throughout the UK as part of Aico's commitment to providing continuous support throughout the process. The support offered by the RSMs extended beyond installations. It encompasses a comprehensive range of services, including in-branch marketing guidance, extensive training sessions for entire branch teams, and specialised attention to unique orders requiring extra care. Tony Boyle, National Sales Manager at Aico, expressed deep appreciation for the pivotal role played by electrical wholesalers in the company’s supply chain, emphasising: “Electrical distributors

are a valued and integral part of our supply chain and our route to market. Aico products can be purchased from nearly 2,500 trading electrical distributors across the UK. We are delighted that our distributor partners are showcasing Aico products and utilising our new point of sale display stands, which take pride of place at many a trade counter.” Aico is dedicated to delivering exemplary customer service and regularly extends invitations to wholesalers to visit its Centre of Excellence in Oswestry to enable the supply chain to understand more about Aico and its products. Ask Aico Distributors also frequently host "Ask Aico" events with the support of their local RSM, providing installers with comprehensive information about domestic fire and carbon monoxide detection. For installers, Aico also provides Expert Installer Training at wholesaler branches, which is undertaken onboard Aico’s mobile training units that tour the country. Expert Installer

Training provides invaluable insights for the supply chain, offering hands-on training to make sure installation is correct for the life safety devices that Aico supplies. This also enables the confidence extended from the knowledge delivered to ensure top-tier customer service. Alongside new point of sale stands, wholesalers can now showcase Aico’s new Ei3030 Multi-Sensor Fire and Carbon Monoxide Alarm with specially designed wallboards and counter mats, which have already been successfully distributed to over 600 branches. Aico’s range of wallboards and counter mats are available for wholesalers to order through their Aico online portal. They simply type in 'POS' and the list of products will appear.

Micaela Abbott, Sales Director at Megaman UK, looks at the company’s current sustainability practices as well as its plan for the coming years.

M

egaman has always been committed to manufacturing exclusively low-energy lighting products, ever since its inception almost 30 years ago. In the early 1990s, Megaman led the way with the introduction of the first compact fluorescent lamps (CFLs) and has been at the forefront of LED technology in the years since. More recently, the focus at Megaman has been the consolidation of our product range in order to provide only the most energy efficient, flexible and adaptable solutions to everyday lighting applications – responding to the needs

of both our wholesalers and their customers. Our current fixture ranges, Performa and Essentials, are the result of that work and provide adaptable, feature rich solutions as well as everyday essential lighting products. Both these ranges have energy efficient LED technology at their core; but we know that it’s not just about the sustainability of our products once installed. The processes we have in place during our products’ development are also crucial, and we are proud of the steps we are taking to become a more sustainable and socially responsible company.

Sustainable development and delivery All Megaman products are developed at our manufacturing facilities in Hong Kong to ISO9001 where continuous research and development - backed by more than 1,000 R&D staff - continues daily, using an industry leading energy efficiency testing laboratory. At these facilities we are pleased to hold the ISO14001 certification for environmental management which requires a rigorous and comprehensive audit focused on a number of areas including waste reduction, sustainable practices, legislative awareness, employee engagement and a proactive management of environmental issues. Closer to home at our UK headquarters in Welwyn Garden City, our warehouse staff operate a zero-waste policy, with all products arriving to the UK on recyclable cardboard palettes which we then reuse - along with any shrink wrap – when sending products on to our wholesalers and distributors around the country. We also do what we can to cut our energy consumption, including updating our own lighting as and when more

Our next step will be “around reducing waste and the sustainability of our products.

energy efficient options become available. In the last 12 months we installed our own GEO 2 high bay from the Performa range. Crucially, this product offers multiple wattage/lumen outputs and is compatible with a microwave motion sensor – like many products in our range – so that it can be set to dim or turn off completely following a period of inactivity. This alone has cut the energy consumption of our entire headquarters (warehouse and offices) by a third, and positively impacted our CO2 emissions. Looking to the future As we look towards the next 30 years, we believe that we have a responsibility to keep innovating for our customers and we want to continue to be at the cutting-edge when it comes to energy efficiency.

However, our next step will be around reducing waste and the sustainability of our products as we are currently working to adapt our fixture range so that the LED module inside can be replaced, and the housing can continue to be used. Importantly, this needs to be possible without impacting the slimline, lightweight nature of our product range or any of the products’ ability to be retrofitted into the place of existing integrated fixture. We are also currently working towards achieving one of leading business sustainability ratings so that we can provide the utmost transparency to our customers in terms of our sustainability credentials and practices within Hong Kong and the UK. Plus, we are looking to expand our community outreach by engaging more closely with charities close to our hearts in Welwyn Garden City and around the country. On this path we hope that we can build on the benefits of our highly efficient lighting solutions, to help both our planet and our communities in the future.
