LET’S HAVE A POSITIVE START TO 2024

anuary is a tricky time – for me it’s about how long should you wish everyone a Happy New Year! If you start back at work straight after New Year then it’s very simple, but then you get those people who have an extra week off…or two weeks off. At risk of being ‘that person’ Happy New Year to you all - there I did it! A new year always brings with it a sense of hope and a promise for a bright year ahead and this is something that I like to cling onto for as long as possible – even during those cold long winter days. In the electrical wholesaling industry there is a lot to look forward to in 2024. For a start there is the anticipation of 10 issues of PEW, bringing you all the latest products and news from the industry. It’s also a leap year so you get a bonus day to play with – sadly it isn’t a bank holiday but you can’t win them all. This year will also see the Olympic and Paralympic Games take place in Paris with more than 10,000 Olympians and 4,400 Paralympians competing for gold medal glory. Now here’s an interesting fact - this will be the first year that break dancing is included as an Olympic Sport……I’m not sure how I feel about that to be honest…perhaps it is one for future discussion! One of the continuing developments for our industry will be the evolution of smart homes and with it the promise of a whole host of new products which promise all manner of amazing things – I’m not sure about you but I’m looking forward to seeing where this will take us next. So, as we head through January, hang onto that optimism – it won’t be long until the days start to get longer and before you know it we will (in true British style) be complaining about how hot it is! For now, grab a cup of tea and enjoy catching up on what’s happening in the industry. See you next month

NEWS & VIEWS INTEGRAL LED MARKS 10TH YEAR

INTEGRAL LED CELEBRATES 10 YEARS Integral LED has reached a major milestone in the history of the company – its 10th anniversary. When Integral LED was founded 10 years ago many people were surprised by the apparent change in direction. Having been active in the memory sector since 1989, Integral was well respected, known for having a deep understanding of the industry and the semiconductor technology which makes memory tech tick. However, LEDs shifted the lighting industry into the electronics sector and if there is one thing Integral knew it was electronics and technology. Both being reliant on semiconductors, the foundations of the products were very similar with comparable problems, trends and lifecycles.

To stand by this intention Integral heavily in testing and training before launching a single product. Over a quarter of a million pounds was spent on facilitating an on-site lighting laboratory so that a multi-stage testing and quality assurance process could be implemented. Tested at sample stage, pre- and post- production and endorsed by the Lighting Industry Association’s Quality Assurance mark, Integral’s testing

Over a quarter of a million pounds was spent on “facilitating an on-site lighting laboratory. ”

and quality control ensures that any product holding the Integral LED name backs the promise to provide trusted lighting solutions. Looking to the future and the next 10 years, Integral believes there are exciting times ahead - the company will continue to grow its product offering and its new logistics facility in Calverton, Nottinghamshire, promises to improve service to its customers. Sunil Kotecha, Managing Director, said: “We’re grateful to everyone who has trusted in Integral LED and our products. Our success story would be incomplete without our clients and consumers, whose requests, challenges, and feedback have helped propel us forward, improving both our products and our range. “Looking to the future and the next 10 years, we believe there are exciting times ahead both for Integral LED and for the lighting industry as a whole.”

SCHNEIDER ANNOUNCES NEW PARTNERSHIP

SCHNEIDER ELECTRIC PARTNERS WITH ARCELORMITTAL ON LOW-CARBON STEEL ArcelorMittal and Schneider Electric have announced a partnership whereby ArcelorMittal will supply Schneider Electric with XCarb recycled and renewably produced steel for its electrical cabinets and enclosures. Produced at ArcelorMittal’s site in Sestao, Spain, XCarb recycled and renewably produced steel is made using a very high proportion of recycled steel in an electric arc furnace, powered with 100% renewable electricity. This results in CO₂ emissions which are close to 70% lower than the same product made without XCarb recycled and renewably

produced steel. The partnership is the result of several months of technical partnership and collaboration between ArcelorMittal Steel Services Centre Europe and Schneider Electric, to find the right grade of steel and coating for the project. Earlier this year, Schneider Electric announced the opening of a new roll-forming workshop at its Sarel factory in Alsace, France to prepare the low-carbon emissions steel enclosure parts that are assembled at Schneider’s Capellades factory near Barcelona, Spain. The low-carbon emissions steel used in these

plants is supplied by ArcelorMittal Steel Service Centres Europe from its distribution centre in Reims, France. “At Schneider Electric, sustainability is at the core of our mission, driving us to innovate and create a more sustainable future. We call this Electricity 4.0, meaning the integration of digital technologies with electrification for sustainability. In this effort, we recognise the power of partnerships to make an even greater impact on our journey to net-zero,” said Rohan Kelkar, Schneider Electric's Executive Vice-President of Power Products Division.

NEWLY QUALIFIED ELECTRICIANS NEEDED TO SUPPORT SOLAR PLANS

BOOST IN UK SOLAR NEEDS 500 MORE ELECTRICIANS PER YEAR The latest research into solar PV workforce requirements concludes that up to 500 newly qualified electricians per year might be needed to support Government plans for 70GW of solar capacity by 2035. With the UK standing at a current solar capacity of around 15GW, the research was commissioned by The Electrotechnical Skills Partnership (TESP) and funded by NET to explore the electrotechnical industry’s capability to help fulfil this growth and the projected resource needed. Research experts Pye Tait carried out wide-ranging investigations, interviews with electrical contractors and in-depth analysis to arrive at the findings, which included looking at how long the average solar PV installation takes and

the level of maintenance required. It’s estimated that from now until 2035, a total workforce of between 6,110 and 6,890 full-time equivalent (FTE) qualified electricians will be required to support increased solar installations. This represents 4,800 to 5,600 more than the current FTE requirement for solar PV, or an extra 438 to 509 FTE electricians qualifying each year. Although challenging, the electrotechnical industry has a good starting point from which to resource this need. The report estimates the UK’s current population of electricians and electrical fitters at 210,000 (excluding apprentices). Last year saw around 4,000 apprentices becoming qualified electricians, whilst apprentice start figures across the UK have

been significantly higher than average in both of the last two years. In its report, Pye Tait also acknowledged that ongoing improvements to solar PV technology could result in fewer PV units being needed, and therefore a reduction in the number of electricians required. “Whilst the initial projections seem within our reach, it’s important to highlight the expanding need for electricians elsewhere across the industry to meet future needs,” said TESP Chair Ruth Devine. “The impact of growth areas such as smart-homes, electrification of heat, electric vehicle charging point and battery storage systems, to name just a few, means we need a constant and increasing supply of qualified and qualifying electricians.”

CHARITY UPDATE

HIGH STAKES:

UNDERSTANDING AND ADDRESSING GAMBLING ADDICTION In the high-pressure environment of the electrical industry, where precision and constant attention to detail are the norms, it's not uncommon for professionals to seek outlets for stress relief.

G

ambling addiction, also known as compulsive gambling or gambling disorder, is an impulse-control disorder. It's characterised by an uncontrollable urge to keep gambling despite the toll it begins to take. Unlike other addictive behaviours, gambling addiction often goes undetected and can be a challenge to recognise. Gambling can be accessed almost anywhere and most importantly, it isn't illegal - which means that a high volume of those who engage in frequent gambling, are unable to identify it as an unhealthy habit. For electrical industry professionals, the precision and risk management skills honed on the job can misleadingly boost confidence in gambling activities. The illusion of control in games of chance, combined with the high-stress nature of the industry, can make individuals more susceptible to gambling addiction.

Signs of gambling addiction ● Spending more money or time on gambling than one can afford ● Becoming secretive with the use of gambling platforms ● Struggling to control or stop gambling ● Neglecting work, family, or personal responsibilities ● Borrowing money or selling possessions to gamble ● Feeling restless or irritable when trying to cut down on gambling

Gambling addiction doesn’t just affect the individual; it has a wider impact, often including family members, friends and colleagues. In our industry, safety is paramount. Excessive gambling is just one factor that can cause stress and act as a distraction which may lead to critical errors on the job. Seeking help It can be difficult to know where to turn if gambling is negatively impacting you or someone that you care about. It is important to remember that there is always help and support available. As an employer, if you have concerns about colleagues and excessive gambling, please consider the following:

Support Gambling addiction, often called the 'hidden illness', can strain relationships, and deeply affect those surrounding the person who is gambling. Unlike some substance addictions, symptoms are less visible, but there are indicators to watch for: ● Increased irritability, anger, or

restlessness. ● Secretive behaviour when using online

applications/gambling platforms ● Being preoccupied with gambling ● Financial signals such as money

problems, or taking out loans Professional Support: Sensitively encourage employees to seek help from professionals specialising in gambling addiction. Peer Support: Create a support system within the workplace where colleagues can share experiences and offer support. Awareness and Education: Offering regular workshops on the risks of gambling addiction and how to recognise the signs can be invaluable.

● Deceitfulness ● Changes in sleeping patterns due to

mental health, such as heightened anxiety, depression, or sleep disorders like insomnia. Charities and support groups Help is available from the National Gambling Helpline (run by GamCare) – call 0808 8020 133 for free information, support and counselling. Other resources include GambleAware, GamLearn, Gamblers Anonymous and the Citizens Advice Bureau.

FACE TO FACE

In this month’s Face to Face we speak to Richard Turner, Director of LED Product Management & Compliance at Integral LED, and find out more about the evolution of the company.

FACE TO FACE INTEGRAL LED What is your background and how did you get involved with Integral LED?

Q

A. I’ve been working in the lighting industry for over 30 years. I started as a lab engineer carrying out compliance testing and photometric measurements, but quickly shifted to roles which were more focused on product management and development. I’ve worked with some of the largest names in lighting including Sylvania and Louis Poulsen. After a career break during COVID, I found myself wanting to return to the lighting industry. I saw an advert for the Business & Product Development Manager role at Integral LED which suited my skills and expertise and the rest is history. Since December 2021, my role has been Director of LED Product Management & Compliance. Why did Integral take the decision to branch out into LED lighting?

Q

A. It was when LED lighting was in its infancy that Integral saw the synergy between the memory products we were known for and the LED lighting which was just emerging. LEDs shifted the lighting industry into the electronics sector; a sector which Integral was very familiar with. Both being reliant on semiconductors, the foundations of the products were similar with comparable problems, trends and lifecycles. LED technology would continue to change, grow and innovate,

improving efficiency and control whilst prices decreased, just like the memory products which Integral was known for. It seemed a natural progression and the team sought to leverage Integral’s indepth knowledge to get a head start within an evolving, high-growth area.

Q

How has the company evolved during its first 10 years?

A. Integral LED has grown in size and in product range. What started with a small selection of lamps has now developed into a full portfolio of products suitable for any indoor or outdoor application, be it commercial, residential, municipal or industrial. As our expertise has matured so too has our ability to assist with client enquiries, major projects and create bespoke solutions to suit the needs of any client.

Q

Why is stringent product testing so important in the lighting sector?

A. Before LED’s, compliance testing was critical. Varying factors including the chemicals employed in production and the heat created when in use meant that both the creation and use of lighting posed a major risk factor. When lighting moved into the electronics sector, it became relatively easy to manage and produce. This meant that at the advent of LED lighting there were many manufacturers with no specific expertise, producing sub-par products and making spurious, unfounded claims about what their products could do. Lighting standards were still focused on older chemical processes and so there was no adequate compliance standards to regulate these products.

FACE TO FACE

As an electrical product, there were instances where early Class II lamps and luminaires broke down within the driver causing the metal body to become live. These sorts of issues posed significant hazards from both electrical shock and fire risk but were not covered by the existing product testing regulations. It took some time for the lighting standards to evolve in line with LED technology, occurring alongside the banning of traditional lighting tech, but nowadays the compliance and testing standards ensure that any product released into the market is safe for the installer and user. At Integral LED, testing is at the heart of everything we do. Our ethos is reliability and our motto “Trusted Lighting Solutions” highlights this. Working with our partners and third party laboratories as well as performing batch safety and compliance testing in-house, we ensure all our products align with directives and standards. Our testing standards are further backed by the LIA’s Quality Assurance Mark. How can sensors and smart lighting control systems be used to maximise LED efficiency?

Q

A. Sensors and smart lighting control systems are only as good as the person using them. To begin with, a carefully planned and executed lighting control strategy is key to maximising LED efficiency. The types of sensors and where they are used is critical in the operation of these strategies, like if they are to detect absence or presence and whether to choose PIR or microwave. Adding sensors to facilitate daylight harvesting enables flexible lighting depending on available natural light and can cut lighting costs. Many newer lighting control systems enable two-way communication between luminaires and control, allowing their status and operational data to be tracked. Maintenance routines and checks can then be performed remotely and

The lighting industry is at the forefront of energy saving “within the electronics sector and this will be pushed further through 2024. ” automatically. The data from such checks then further improves efficiencies with scheduled maintenance contributing to a reduction in labour costs. Additionally, these systems enable emergency lighting to be an integrated part of the lighting design, instead of the two design approach which was favoured until recently. However, it is where smart lighting systems can be used beyond the basics that energy and usage efficiencies can really be seen. Where we look past lighting to smart systems which facilitate operational efficiencies in other areas. With appropriate sensors, smart systems can be used to see the usage of rooms, the movement of people and track assets. Within hospitals, nurses, doctors and orderlies need not waste time hunting for equipment but can track it with the buildings smart system. Warehouses can follow picker journeys and optimise stock locations to cut picking times. Companies can monitor office usage, by way of thermal mapping, allowing them to see if they can downsize space, reconfigure working arrangements or automate facilities including lighting and air-con. How will Integral’s new logistics facility impact the service it offers to customers?

Q

A. Our new logistics facility is situated in a more centralised UK location, just outside Nottingham, enabling more of our shipments to be delivered the very next day. SOCKET SCIENCE

T

he humble switchsocket is an essential part of modern life; one that is continually evolving with developments in technology and advancements in mechanical design. Although the UK had sockets as early as 1885, it wasn’t until April 1919 that a reliable, effective two-pin socket was developed: MK Electric co-founder Charles Arnold patented the Multy Kontact socket and the British Engineering Standards Association soon declared it the new standard. This remained until 1947, when BS1363 was published, and the age of the 13A, three-pin socket began.

In the fast-changing wiring accessories sector, new features and technologies are always just around the corner. Amy Burley, Global Offering Manager at MK Electric, examines the switchsocket innovations sparking change in 2024.

Today, access to power is in high demand, whether for plugging in laptops and monitors in commercial offices or charging mobile devices during the morning commute. Time is of the essence for consumers and contractors alike: consumers want convenient access to power, quickly, and contractors want to be able to fulfil the customer needs as efficiently as possible. This is balanced by a heightened awareness on the need for sustainability. With rising costs and tightening regulatory requirements, businesses are continuously refining their energy management strategies and introducing new technologies, from IoT to metering, to better control energy consumption. These two driving forces in the electrical market are fostering innovation within socket technology. Every bar counts In the past decade we have seen a meteoric rise of switchsockets with integrated USB outlets for convenient charging of portable electronics. From mobile phones and tablets to smart watches and wireless headphones, we all have an ever-growing arsenal of electronics that need charging – and quickly. USB outlets have become very popular in commercial properties such as hotels, cafes and airports as a way of conveniently enhancing consumer experience.

Until recently, USB-A ports were the norm. However, this is now giving way to the improved efficiency of USB-C, which can provide a much higher output. As of 2023, the European Union has thrown its support behind USB-C as the universal standard for charging portable electronics with the introduction of its common charging legislation. Manufacturers have until the end of 2024 to adapt accordingly, but many have already began adjusting their designs. The most notable example is Apple, who made the shift from its lightning connector to USB-C in its iPhone 15, marking the most substantial change in Apple’s charging technology in a decade. Switchsockets are likewise adapting, with USB-C sockets becoming more popular. For example, MK Electric has added USB-A and USB-C ports to its most popular wiring device ranges of switchsockets. The range uses power delivery (PD) protocol to rapidly charge devices, and is able to charge iPhones to 50% in 30 minutes. Unlike other mainstream wiring device brands, the 30W ‘fast-charge’ version also offers doublepole switching for enhanced user safety. With this extension to MK’s popular ranges of wiring devices, electrical contractors can fulfil the booming demand for USB-C with a high-quality product that ensures future-proofed safe and rapid charging. Connecting power On the commercial front, the trend towards connectivity and IoT has gained pace in recent years. In many cases, this shift has been driven by a need for operational cost control and greater sustainability, with connected device-to-device communication being better to manage equipment remotely, automate processes, and reduce power consumption. For businesses, managing IoT devices and connected systems usually involves the use of a building management system (BMS) or building energy management system (BEMS). However, electrical sockets have not historically been integrated into a BEMS. When you consider that the modern commercial property will have hundreds of plug-in devices, it’s no surprise that small

power can account for a quarter of a building’s entire energy usage. 2023 saw a dramatic change in the market with the launch of MK Electric’s multi-award-winning Connected Power solution. Developed to meet the evolving needs of commercial installs and designed for improved energy management, Connected Power is the UK’s first BMSintegrated controllable socket. Comprising smart plug sockets and connectivity hubs, the Connected Power solution allows businesses to gain visibility into their buildings’ energy usage, remotely power down unused sockets and automate functions such as scheduling, grouping and alarms. Data is available down to an outlet level, providing more robust information and control of energy use. Connected Power sockets have a 25mm backbox like standard BS1363 standard plug sockets, allowing for easy retrofits. Installers can interlink up to 50 sockets, and as many as 50 hubs can connect to a single supervisor or BMS. In 2024, technology that gives commercial businesses complete control over plug-in energy consumption will no doubt become even more prevalent, and advance further to incorporate cloud control.

Time is money It’s not just the functionality of switchsocket technology that has been developing recently; the installation process has evolved to become faster, easier, and safer. Behind the socket, screw termination can be time-consuming, especially when installing multiple. Each needs to be mindfully installed to prevent over- or under-tightening, which could lead to wasted time on call backs and fault-finding. Inspired by alternatives used in the lighting industry, MK Electric developed Rapid Fix technology, which uses springloaded cable clamp terminations that meet the requirements of BS1363 for a safe, secure, and reliable connection that doesn’t degrade over time. MK Electric has led the way on ease of install with its products for years, from its groundbreaking use of backed out and captive screws and inline terminals to its latest innovation: Rapid Fix technology. Rapid Fix is a further evolution of that, making the install of Logic Plus sockets more efficient. Recently, this innovation was incorporated into MK Electric’s Masterseal Plus range of weather-resistant enclosures, forming an award-winning solution that brings faster install speeds to more projects than ever before. With a wealth of new technologies abound, 2024 looks set to be an electrifying year for switchsockets. By being aware of and offering these flourishing innovations, wholesalers can play a key role in helping contractors and specifiers meet the changing needs of buildings and customers. FINISHING TOUCHES What’s in a plate finish? Hamilton explores what the trend for metallics means for wholesalers.

W

ith clients paying more attention to design detail, and growing increasingly savvy in their spending, electrical wholesalers and contractors are under increasing pressure to come up with the goods. So, suppliers like Hamilton Litestat that meet the needs of the electrician with a versatile product range and keep up with the latest interior trends, make life easier for us all. Hamilton’s range of decorative wiring accessories now consists of 23 plate collections, available in up to 23 standard finishes. And thanks to the popularity of metallic finishes in both modern and traditional interiors, it really hits the spot. Why are metallics such a big deal? Gone are the days when warmer finishes such as brasses and bronzes were reserved only for period interiors. Or where black would only be considered for particularly daring schemes. Hamilton’s team of designers have noticed everyday interiors growing more sophisticated in their appearance, with layered textures becoming a big feature.

Wiring accessories in metallic finishes add another dimension to any interior design – complementing or even enhancing a chosen look rather than being an unavoidable imperfection. This offers wholesalers and their electrical contractor customers a great opportunity to benefit from the sales opportunities that metallic finishes provide. With warmer finishes bringing radiance to an interior that nods to a more luxurious feel, cooler metallics offer a more calming appearance. And with so much choice available, the versatility of metallic is vast, presenting immense sales potential. What do colour trends mean for wholesalers? It goes without saying that what is popular, sells! So, a keen understanding of product desirability is vital for planning stock levels and forecasting sales. This knowledge not only bolsters confidence in making colour recommendations but extends to considerations of style and functionality as well.

24 JANUARY/FEBRUARY 2024 PROFESSIONAL ELECTRICIANS WHOLESALER

Thanks to Hamilton’s designers keeping their fingers firmly on the pulse of the latest design trends, news of Dulux’s chosen colour of the year for 2024 didn’t go unnoticed. And it goes a long way to illustrate the end-user’s clear preference for warmer metallic tones and specific face plate appearances. This year’s featured shade is named Sweet Embrace, and, fluffy designer speak aside, it’s a soft and positive hue, crafted to bring balance and homeliness to any interior. With comfort as its defining quality, accessories in warming shades like brass and bronze become an instinctive choice. Similarly, on-trend colours such as Basalt Gray and Matt Black provide a sense of substance and reliability, further enhancing the feeling of security. When a need for unobtrusiveness arises, a natural inclination toward flatter and softer plate designs emerges. Hamilton’s Hartland G2 – a slim and elegant plate with soft round edges, or their Sheer G2 – a flat, square edged plate, both feature a screwless finish, making them equally fitting choices. So, where does functionality fit in? Emphasising simplicity directs customers’

attention to the finer detail. This includes scrutinising switch options, plate configurations and functionality empowers them to personalise their interior to their exact liking. With this in mind, rocker switches, toggle switches and dimmers become interchangeable and so, Hamilton’s Grid-Fix plates are a useful solution for electrical contractors. Toggle switches provide a minimalist appearance, seamlessly blending into their surroundings. Dimmer switches provide the flexibility to customise the room ambiance to the user’s preference. Rocker switches, with their simplicity, still hold a valuable place as a user-friendly solution. And not forgetting USB-A&C double switch sockets, now a must-have for charging all generations of smart devices. All these options are available in finishes that perfectly complement the face plate on which they are mounted. Traditionally, when considering Grid-Fix as a solution, the end result might have been tainted by the inclusion of a plastic inlay plate, often limited in colour choices. This limitation is particularly noticeable when using toggle and dimmer switches. And so, recognising metallic finishes remain firmly in the spotlight, Hamilton has developed a range of Grid-Fix inlay plates to provide a cost-effective and contractorfriendly solution, ensuring that interiors stay on-trend. A stylish solution Complementing its range of wiring accessory plate finishes, Hamilton has introduced 14 new metallic inlays. These are available in a variety of finishes, including Antique Brass, Satin Steel, Copper Bronze, Basalt Gray, Etrium Bronze, Richmond Bronze, Black Nickel, Gloss White, Satin Brass, Bright Chrome, Matt Black, White, Connaught Bronze and Polished Brass. This allows easy adaption of lighting control using a GridFix plate. Inlay plates to be selected to match either the switch or the plate finish for a more stylish appearance. In the case of Hamilton’s Linea range, frames can be chosen independently of the face plate, providing the flexibility to match or contrast with the switch or plate finish, depending upon the desired look. In addition to the 14 inlay plate finishes, Hamilton also offers three trim options. Customers can choose from black, white and quartz grey to ensure any plastic element remains discreet. The diversity of Hamilton’s offerings allows for the seamless customisation of wiring accessory solutions. This ensures they meet the contractor’s need for ease of fit, instilling confidence in your aesthetic recommendations.

TOOLS

GOING CORDLESS Kevin Rowles, Sales and Marketing Director at HiKOKI Power Tools, explores the dynamic shift towards cordless power tools, fuelled by advancements in battery and motor technology.

C

ordless power tools now outsell their corded equivalents and look set to continue this trend for many years to come. In 2022, for instance, the sales of cordless power tools in the professional power tools market in the UK accounted for 81.1%, while corded tools made up just 18.9%, when as recently as 2018, the distribution between corded and cordless power tools was approximately 50-50 according to the European Power Tool Association. The reasons for this growth are numerous. Cordless tools offer users an unparalleled freedom of movement, enabling wholesaler customers to work in environments where mains power may be impractical or restricted. This portability is particularly crucial in large construction sites, where the need to move swiftly between tasks demands tools that can keep up with the pace. Extended use on site One of the significant drivers of cordless tool popularity is the rapid advancement in battery technology. Lithium-ion batteries, in particular, have become the powerhouse behind cordless tools. These batteries boast higher energy density, longer lifecycles, and lighter weight compared to traditional alternatives. This makes cordless tools not only more powerful but also more practical for extended use on the job site.

Despite the benefits of mains-powered tools, certain construction sites enforce restrictions on their use. These limitations arise from safety concerns, logistical challenges, and the need for greater adaptability. Large construction sites, especially those in the initial stages of development, may lack a reliable and widespread power supply. This makes the use of cordless tools, powered by rechargeable batteries, a more viable option for maintaining workflow efficiency. Moreover, the presence of multiple trades on a construction site can lead to a scarcity of available power outlets. The need for various tools and equipment makes the flexibility offered by cordless options

indispensable. Additionally, safety concerns related to trailing cables, especially in busy and congested sites, further accentuate the advantages of cordless power tools. Batteries Lithium-ion batteries have become the backbone of cordless power tools, driving efficiency and performance to new heights. These batteries are characterised by their high energy density, low selfdischarge rates, and lightweight design. This combination of features ensures that construction professionals can enjoy longer operating times, reduced downtime for recharging, and less fatigue from handling heavy tools.

TOOLS

The ability of lithium-ion batteries to maintain a consistent power output until fully depleted sets them apart from traditional alternatives, ensuring that users experience reliable performance throughout the battery's lifecycle. As the demand for longer runtimes and quicker recharge times increases, the continued innovation in lithium-ion battery technology will be a key driver of advancements in cordless power tools. Brushless motors Brushless motors represent another milestone in power tool technology, offering increased efficiency, durability, and reduced maintenance requirements. Unlike traditional brushed motors, brushless motors operate without physical contact between brushes and the rotor, minimising friction and wear. This leads to a longer lifespan and enhanced overall performance of the power tool. The efficiency gains of brushless motors also translate into more power output for a given size and weight, contributing to the

lightweight and compact design of modern cordless tools. This efficiency not only extends the runtime of cordless tools but also makes them competitive with their mains-powered counterparts, bridging the gap between the two and providing construction professionals with versatile options for their varied needs. If we take nailers as an example of the transformation cordless has brought to this product sector, the advantages are stark. Nailers are a staple in construction, and the transition from corded or gas-powered models to cordless variants has been a game-changer. Cordless nailers, equipped with lithium-ion batteries and efficient brushless motors, offer performance on par with their mains-powered counterparts. Electrical wholesalers have a significant opportunity to capitalise on the growing demand for cordless power tools, a market trend that shows no signs of slowing down. By stocking up on cordless power tools and related accessories, wholesalers can position themselves as one-stop shops for all their customers’ power tool needs.

TOOLS

HANDY INVESTMENT Brinley Buckley-Roberts, Brand Manager at Carl Kammerling International, the home of C.K Tools, discusses why premium hand tools are worth the investment.

W

hether you’re an electrical professional or stockist, reputation can be the difference in securing the next job or securing that repeat purchase. Tool choice is a careful consideration for any electrician; an inadequate tool could compromise the finish, lead to unscheduled downtime or an unforecasted replacement purchase or – in the most serious circumstances – compromise safety. And if the tool choice was a recommendation at the service desk that can lead to a lack of trust in the stockist.

While there will always be the industry need to offer a range of options for customers, investing in premium hand tools can really make a difference in both the short and long-term for professionals and stockists alike. But what defines a premium hand tool? There are several elements that contribute to the ‘premium’ factor: from the R&D process; the source of the materials; the engineering and manufacturing procedures; to the quality control and accreditation. Each element undergoes a constant review as new materials, manufacturing techniques, or industry requirements are uncovered, with the effectiveness, durability and safety of the products always the top priority.

30 JANUARY/FEBRUARY 2024 PROFESSIONAL ELECTRICIANS WHOLESALER

Clear thought process At C.K Tools, the starting point for R&D is listening intently to what the industry is asking for. By working closely with a panel of professionals CK can develop innovative solutions and product evolutions which tackle the everyday issues electricians face and make their job that much more efficient. The NPD team will then consider the design, the multifunctionality, the durability, the ergonomics, and of course – the materials. There’s no product without a clear thought process behind it; each tool is methodically planned, CAD designed, prototyped and thoroughly tested to develop the industry-leading hand tools which C.K Tools is known for. Exceptional strength and durability Exceptional hand tools need to be made from exceptional materials. Material choice is of great importance to C.K Tools and has contributed considerably to the reputation built over more than 200 years. CK is committed to developing innovative tools which offer exceptional strength and durability. Many products feature steel from Germany, in particular the North Rhine, which is world-renowned for its steel production. The region’s steel has varying levels and mixes of chromium, which has excellent corrosion resistance, vanadium,

030_PEW_JANFEB24_Layout 1 18/01/2024 18:45 Page 31

TOOLS

which works as a deoxidiser and reduces wear, and molybdenum, which when combined with chromium gives greater strength and impact resistance for durable and long-lasting tools. Manufacturing excellence Carl Kammerling was founded in Germany in 1904 and many of its premium product range are still manufactured there today, meeting the highest standards of German engineering, safety and long-life performance. The North Rhine is known as the industrial heartland for tool manufacturing. The steel mills, chemical and water treatment businesses, and manufacturing plants all reside there and have developed great ways of collaborating over the years to ensure that the potential of the raw material is not lost through the processing and engineering stages. And the precision engineering techniques don’t stop at the steel; hand tools have to be inherently comfortable and safe to handle. To ensure this, every

single screwdriver handle is injection moulded directly to the steel, giving the ultimate torsion-proof bond for increased reliability, durability, control and comfort. Other engineering techniques are harnessed to ensure products live up to the premium tag. Induction hardening is a process CK uses to ensure that parts of products – such as the jaws on pliers – are hardened to withstand heavy usage and ensure long-term performance. It involves electromagnetically heating up the steel and then rapidly cooling it to maintain the desired properties. Commitment to safety With safety and quality standards being of paramount importance in the electrical

trade, premium tools not only enhance efficiency and accuracy but also reduce the risk of accidents and injuries. Across certain lines, C.K Tools’ products are VDE certified, which is the highest form of independent safety testing in the electrical trade, while the majority achieve GS (Gepruefte Sicherheit) and DIN (Deutsche Institut) accreditation, which are German standards that indicate performance and quality. Investing in a premium hand tool means you’re investing in a brand which understands their customers, the requirements of the trade and are committed to paving the way in product innovation to provide the safest, most reliable and durable tool for the job. It’s this emphasis on quality which is the key to driving long-term customer trust and repeat purchase, making for a wise investment in the long run. FIRE & SAFETY

Neil Baldwin, Managing Director of ESP, looks at the different types of fire protection solutions available and highlights the support offering from ESP that wholesalers can pass on to their customers.

THE WHOLE PACKAGE

F

ire alarm systems are broadly divided into two main groupings “conventional” fire alarm systems and analogue addressable “intelligent” systems - with each type best suited to different kinds of premises. Conventional systems Conventional, or four-wire, fire alarm systems have been traditionally used in smaller properties such as shops and restaurants. They work by dividing the building into a number of detection zones, with the detectors and call points within each zone hardwired on dedicated twocore cable to the control panel. There may be multiple detectors on a single zone. A separate two-core, fire-protected cable for the alarm’s sounders is required as they are wired on different circuits. If a detector is activated, the control panel identifies the circuit that contains the triggered device and so indicates the zone from which the fire alarm has originated, but the area then has to be manually searched to pinpoint the individual device. Because the majority of conventional detectors are simple, two state devices, they can only be in either a normal or fire condition. Although modern components and quality system design can play a part in reducing potential problems, it is not uncommon for conventional systems to generate unwanted alarms. As such, conventional systems are not suitable in large buildings which could potentially have over 50 zones in order to correctly protect the property to the

prevailing industry standards. A conventional system would prove a costly and time-consuming exercise. Intelligent systems Addressable or “intelligent” fire alarm systems overcome these limitations and are designed for large commercial premises and more complex networked systems. They are more expensive and more complicated than conventional fourwire systems, having increased flexibility, intelligence, speed of identification, and scope of control. In addressable systems, different types of initiating devices are wired in one or more single loops around the premises, requiring less cabling than conventional systems, with each detector or call point having its own unique address. The fire control panel receives information and status reports from each device and indicates its exact location if there is a fault, contamination or activation via smoke or heat detection. As these control panels have become more sophisticated and more powerful, they are capable of handling an increasing number of loops per panel and it is possible to network numerous panels together to increase the capacity. Two-wire technology Two-wire fire alarm systems are based on standard conventional system technology. However, unlike standard conventional four wired systems where the detectors, call points and alarm devices for each zone are wired on separate circuits, the new

intelligent two-wire technology allows all devices to be wired on the same set of twocore zone cables back to the control panel - enabling it to use a single circuit per zone both for detection and to power the sounders. This advanced technology can reduce both installation and material cost. A range of solutions ESP’s extensive fire protection product range offers a solution to any size of project. The range is broadly divided into two categories; The MAGfire four-wire and the MAGDUO two-wire fire alarm systems are aimed at small to medium contractors, offering them a highly flexible and adaptable system that will save them time and money on the installation process. Whilst the MAGfire addressable systems are suitable for large commercial premises and more complex networked systems.

Design service A dedicated ESP design service allows contractors to access a system design facility that will cover fire systems as well as CCTV systems. Available to any size of business, from local electricians to national contracting companies, the aim is to provide expertise

FIRE & SAFETY

in choosing the right products and solutions to create a scheme that meets all the requirements and objectives of the project in question, and that is compliant with all the relevant regulations and standards. From an initial enquiry to discuss the requirements, the next stage will be one of information and measurements gathering. For larger and more complex design schemes, a visit to site will be carried out for a detailed survey. With all the relevant information gathered, including drawings and specifications, a suitable design proposal for a fire system will be created and supplied to the client along with a quotation. Two-way interaction between customer and the ESP design team throughout the process will be of paramount importance to ensure the design scheme meets all the necessary requirements. Fire Commissioning Service The commissioning service offered by ESP

adds another dimension to the company’s fire protection offer. It is designed to ensure that all installed ESP systems operate correctly and are fully compliant with the latest BS5839-1 regulations. A qualified engineer will confirm that the system has reached the relevant British Standard and will issue a certificate on completion of the project prior to system handover. Dedicated ESP commissioning engineers are located throughout the UK to provide access to this new service to a wide-reaching audience. BAFE Accreditation for ESP At the end of 2021, ESP added another string to its credentials bow, with the announcement that the company had been awarded BAFE (British Approvals for Fire Equipment) accreditation for its fire design service. BAFE is the independent registration body for Third Party Certified fire safety service providers across the UK, and ESP now appears on the National BAFE Fire Safety Register.

BAFE manages and maintains a Scheme called BAFE SP203-1 which covers Fire Detection and Alarm Systems. This Scheme exists to deliver quality, independent evidence that providers are competent to deliver fire system designs for its fire detection and alarm systems. Complete package With these latest developments contractors can now take advantage of a full fire systems package from ESP, which gives them access to a design service, a vast choice of products including the latest two-wire systems, the new commissioning service, plus technical support from a team of qualified and experienced operators. Wholesalers are in prime position to keep their customers up to date, not just with the latest products and solutions from ESP, but the whole package of support they can access from design to commissioning. ARMORDUCT ADJUSTABLE COUPLERS Armorduct is launching the UK’s first adjustable coupler for its modular cable management systems. It will give installers the flexibility to adapt their solution quickly when faced with unforeseen difficulties on site. The coupler provides up to 100mm of adjustment for Armorduct’s cable tray, trunking and basket systems in all sizes and is available in pre-galvanised, MagnelisR and stainless steel. Talking about the adjustable couplers, James Wood, national business development manager at Amorduct, said: “The whole point of having a modular system developed for an installation is to make installation simple and fast. But sometimes you will find that in reality you need to have a system that is flexible enough to adapt. It might be because there is an obstruction or perhaps a building is not quite square which can throw your measurements out by a few centimetres. “If you then have to cut lengths of trunking or basket to size and then treat the cut ends to maintain its protection, you are defeating the whole purpose of having a modular fit and forget system. “Our adjustable couplers give the installer that bit of flexibility to overcome such problems. This simple solution will save a lot of time on site.” TO FIND OUT MORE VISIT: WWW.RDR.LINK/WAQ025

Joe Brawn, Product and Marketing Director at Vent-Axia, sets out the company’s sustainability targets and how electrical wholesalers can play their part in the UK reaching its 2050 Net-Zero goal.

D

espite the Government appearing to slow down on its route to Net Zero, the UK still has the legal target to meet Net Zero by 2050. Rather than putting sustainability on the back burner to meet these targets it is important to make changes now to ensure we meet this goal. At Vent-Axia we are committed to a low-carbon future with the health and wellbeing of people and the planet at its core. We have been leading the ventilation industry since 1936 and it is something we continue to do with our aim to become Net Zero by 2040, 10 years ahead of the UK’s 2050 Net Zero target. Currently, the carbon avoided by Vent-Axia’s group products is around four times the group’s operational carbon footprint. Carbon avoidance is the only way for the UK to reach Net Zero with the decarbonisation of buildings an essential part of this, which is why it is important for the whole supply chain to play its part. We therefore aim to provide our customers with the products to help them on their decarbonisation journey while also continuing our commitment to providing effective ventilation to improve indoor air quality (IAQ) and comfort for inhabitants – since 70% of the air we breathe in our lifetime is air inside buildings.

Strategy To illustrate our commitment, Vent-Axia has set clear sustainability targets including increasing sales of our low-carbon products and increasing the use of recycled material in our manufacturing. As part of our sustainability strategy Vent-Axia has developed three pillars that orientate

and deliver our long-term objectives which are: Product – engineer sustainable solutions; Planet – improve environmental performance; and People – connect people together. These focus areas have driven several targets including Vent-Axia setting a target of 70% of our sales revenue to be from low-carbon products by end of FY2025. Through our commitment to our targets the company has successfully reached this milestone ahead of the target date. At Vent-Axia we have also set a target for 90% of the plastic we use in our own manufacturing to be from recycled sources by the end of FY2025. Currently this figure is already at 83% and so we are on track to hit the 90% figure. Heat recovery Vent-Axia recognises the importance of cutting carbon emissions in the built environment since buildings account for 40% of energy use in Europe and approximately 35% of emissions. To meet the Government’s 2050 Net Zero target, buildings need to decarbonise which will involve the wide-scale electrification of heating, a move away from fossil fuels, as well as significant improvements to air tightness and building insulation. Heat recovery ventilation will be a key

wholesalers that are prepared “for Electrical decarbonisation will benefit both themselves and their customers. ” technology to help deliver the final piece of the carbon avoidance by preventing heat loss, so as a technology it is set for significant growth. This is a huge opportunity for the electrical industry, so it is an important time for electrical wholesalers to familiarise themselves with the products. To meet the necessary carbon reductions buildings are becoming more thermally efficient as they are insulated, and their air tightness is increased to avoid heat loss. However, without considering ventilation alongside these measures a building can end up with condensation, mould and poor IAQ. Energy efficient heat recovery ventilation therefore supplies a solution that provides healthy filtered air while recovering heat that would be otherwise lost. At Vent-Axia we collaborate closely with our customer base to ensure we develop the products customers need to decarbonise. For that reason, we are constantly improving the efficiency of our products and reducing their carbon intensity. For our latest heat recovery ventilation products, the Sentinel Apex commercial heat recovery system and the Lo-Carbon Sentinel Econiq residential Mechanical Ventilation with Heat

Recovery (MVHR), we can provide TM65 data to help customers understand their wider life cycle assessment. Retrofit Heat recovery ventilation does not only benefit new build residential and new build commercial properties. With most of the housing stock that will exist in 2050 already built, it is imperative we improve the heat loss of existing stock through deep, energy efficient refurbishment. This is where electrical wholesalers can step in offering electricians heat recovery ventilation solutions. As existing homes improve with greater levels of insulation and become more airtight, it is important that they are adequately ventilated in line with Building Regulations, Part F. Vent-Axia has therefore specifically developed a heat recovery range to provide increased ventilation whilst minimising unnecessary heat loss through heat recovery technology in existing homes. Historically heat recovery ventilation has been delivered by a central ducted heat recovery unit but this presents a number of issues for electricians in retrofit applications. The biggest barrier is the difficulty to install complex duct runs within an existing dwelling. Vent-Axia has

therefore specifically designed the Heat Recovery Retrofit Solution for easy, lower cost retrofit of heat recovery to save maximum energy and emissions. It replaces a complex central ducted heat recovery unit, with smaller easy to install wall and ceiling units, dramatically reducing the ducting and therefore the cost of the installation. The range consists of three different dMVHR units comprising: the Lo-Carbon Heat Save, an alternative flow heat recovery unit; the Lo-Carbon Tempra, a wall mounted heat recovery unit; and the Lo-Carbon Calido, a heat recovery unit that utilises a simplified ducting system that can run within the home or in the roof space. These three units can be used together to help maximise energy savings, by introducing heat recovery into a property. With carbon reductions becoming ever more important as the 2050 target approaches now is the time to makes changes. Electrical wholesalers that are prepared for decarbonisation will benefit both themselves and their customers. We can work together to help reach Net Zero.
