Welcome to the June issue of Professional Electricians Wholesaler. If it hasn’t passed you by you will be aware we have a whole summer of major sports events ahead of us, with the Euro 2024 football championships in Germany, the Summer Olympics and Paralympics in Paris and not forgetting our old friend Wimbledon.

The England football team will be decked out in their latest strip which will cost parents a small fortune to keep their children happy with (until we inevitably lose on penalties in the semi-final). Replica team jerseys, and sportswear in general has of course become huge business for sports brands. If you go back a few decades the unveiling of a new sports kit would have attracted very little fanfare. Now, however, it’s a multi-million pound industry, with carefully crafted promotional campaigns using phrases like ‘increased breathability’. According to the official England Store website, the latest strip ‘disrupts convention with a modern take on a classic, designed for that game-changing moment in the 90th minute or beyond’….nope, me neither.

My disingenuous tone so far is a bit unfair. As a sportsperson myself I fully appreciate the need for comfortable clothing appropriate for the occasion. The name Yvon Petra might not mean anything to many of you but not only was he was the last Frenchman to win the Wimbledon men’s singles title, he was also the last man to wear long trousers in a Wimbledon final. It is quite unthinkable to imagine the likes of Djokovic and Alcaraz playing a five-set classic in that sort of attire this year.

Purpose designed clothing is not restricted to sports and leisure, it is important for tradespeople to feel comfortable on site as well, whether it’s three below zero or hotter than the Sahara. Workwear has become big business, with some well known workwear brands now being stocked in high street sport shops. The major sports brands pay millions to superstars to wear their products as brand ambassadors. Two recent films underline just how competitive the world of brand endorsement is. In ‘King Richard’ a teenage Venus Williams is offered a sponsorship deal with Nike worth 3 million dollars, and in ‘Air’ executives from Nike compete for the signature of a then-relatively unknown Michael Jordan against Adidas and Converse.

It got me wondering, how far away are we from seeing tradespeople being sponsored by tools and workwear companies to promote their gear? Well, the idea is not that far fetched. At some product launches I have attended recently the trade press have been outnumbered by tradespeople turned ‘influencers’, who have built up huge social media followings. It therefore makes complete sense for companies to reach their target audience through these channels.

I have tried to think of some brands that might be willing to sponsor an editor of a trade magazine but have so far drawn a blank. Suggestions please!

NET ZERO LIGHTING CONFERENCE PROMOTES HOLISTIC APPROACHTO SUSTAINABILITY

Achieving Net Zero for lighting must encompass everything from supply-chain sustainability and logistics to customer engagement - this was one of the key messages to come from the Net Zero Lighting Conference in London last week.

The event was organised by The Lighting Industry Association (LIA) and Recolight. It brought together 120 delegates and speakers for a comprehensive review of the challenges around the decarbonisation of manufacture in the industry. Lighting manufacturers Ledvance, Whitecroft, Stoane Lighting, and Knightsbridge, shared some of the strategies they have adopted to reduce carbon emissions.

“What’s clear to me is that moving towards Net Zero and sustainability is not

a tick-box exercise, but more about changing the culture of your organisation,” said conference chair, Ray Molony. “And when you change that culture, good

things flow. For instance, staff, especially younger members of the team, become energised and engaged in a way few management initiatives can achieve.”

Ray added: “A number of companies said that they gained enormously from beginning their sustainability journey. Far from being a burden, gathering and analysing data on their processes such as their energy use and their supply-chain, helped organisations identify waste and potential cost savings. In some cases, the savings were dramatic.”

Nigel Harvey, Recolight CEO, said: “It has been inspiring to hear of the work some lighting manufacturers are now undertaking as they start to decarbonise their operations.”

CHARITY UPDATE

FACE TO FACE PROLECTRIC

In this month’s Face to Face we hear from Kathryn Adams, Commercial Director at Prolectric, about solar based products and the future direction of the industry.

QCan you tell us a bit about Prolectric and the products and services the company offers?

A. As the first to specialise in off-grid, renewable lighting and power, we’ve made it our mission to build the world’s cleanest, most advanced, sustainable products. We’ve been powering the UK’s off-grid energy needs with smart, clean, renewable technology for almost a decade.

We introduced the first all in one solar street lighting to the UK in 2011, as a likefor-like alternative to traditional mains powered lights. With no need for trenching or cabling and with no ongoing costs, they are a perfect replacement for streetlights that have come to the end of their life or for new developments. The lights have been widely adopted by house builders, facilities managers for large commercial estates and local councils, for use in car parks, large campus, residential housing developments, parks and pedestrian walkways.

Our solar hybrid generators and solar lighting towers are like-for-like alternatives to diesel. They have been engineered using the latest autonomous software to ensure they work perfectly in the UK, whatever the weather and season.

Engineered in Britain to the highest standards, our products provide unparalleled performance, which reduces or eliminates carbon, fuel and noise – all the while saving costs and meeting carbon saving goals. Since launching our first solar lighting tower in 2016, we have saved customers 27million kgs of CO2 and

“ The self-generating strengths and properties of solar mean it can be used safely and effectively anywhere, and in all weather conditions.”

reduced diesel usage by more than 10.2million litres, which represents a customer saving of more than £10million.

We lead the way in this sector - not least because we pioneered it –but because we’re the only ones to have mastered the art of engineering the only solar, battery and hybrid systems in the UK to truly work autonomously, all-year round.

QWhat advantages does solar/hybrid powered equipment boast over traditional systems?

A. When it comes to permanent lighting, solar streetlights and bollards are simple, quick and economical to install. With no labour required to dig trenches or install trunking for cables, labour costs and carbon footprints are significantly reduced. Installation time is minimal compared to conventional mains power alternatives.

As an unlimited resource, combined with its versatility, minimal noise and low maintenance, solar and solar hybrid powered equipment offer a highly efficient alternative to diesel, without making any compromises to onsite power needs. The self-generating strengths and properties of solar mean it can be used safely and effectively anywhere, and in all weather conditions.

Modern solar panels are designed with self-cleaning technology. Battery maintenance is also minimal, with many solar systems featuring smart battery management systems that require little to no manual intervention. Routine checks and occasional cleaning are usually sufficient to keep a solar system running smoothly year-round.

Temporary power provides a perfect solution for urban areas, as it operates silently and has zero risk of spillages. Including the initial investment, our customer is cost neutral after only two and half years on average –and makes an average total saving of £18k year on year after that.

PROFESSIONAL ELECTRICIANS WHOLESALER JUNE 2024 15 FACE TO FACE

QDo solar based products require optimal weather conditions to operate effectively?

A. Short answer is no, absolutely not. One of the most common myths is that solar power only works in the summer when the sun is shining and becomes inefficient during winter. Contrary to this belief, solar panels are designed to work effectively even in colder climates – and often are more efficient at converting sunlight into electricity when operating at cooler temperatures.

While shorter daylight hours might slightly affect the overall energy generation, advancements in solar technology, such as improved panel efficiency and energy storage systems, have minimised this impact. Prolectric’s solar technology has been engineered to work in the harshest of UK winters, where cloudy days make up 43% of the year. They’ve been tested and proven to work in Scotland.

Even on overcast days solar panels can still capture diffuse sunlight by efficiently converting it into usable energy, allowing customers to effectively harness solar power in low-light conditions. To date, we have provided over 8,000 solar streetlights across the UK, brightening up car parks, walkways and streets, round the clock, 365 days a year.

Solar lighting has come a long way from its early days and today offers a reliable and eco-friendly solution, without compromising on brightness, on a wide range of applications from commercial, industrial and infrastructure to social housing developments. We have spent years creating smart solar tower lights that can self-regulate to ensure they work throughout the night. Using GPS, we are able to capture 10 years of solar radiance, in one location, including the specific dawn and dusk times. This intelligence is evaluated alongside the current state of battery reserves, to provide autonomous

lighting – the built-in capability to manage optimum levels of luminosity throughout the night as needed.

QHow do you see the industry evolving over the next few years?

A. The drive for sustainable products will only continue to increase over the next few years as we head closer to our 2030 and 2050 decarbonisation targets. With increased pressure on the UK grid, permanent solar lighting will become a more desirable method to alleviate some of the demand. This, combined with the continued rising cost of fossil fuel energy, means we are very confident that off-grid solar lighting will result in much more widespread use.

“ Even on overcast days solar panels can still capture diffuse sunlight by efficiently converting it into usable energy.”

We also predict a critical sea change when it comes to diesel reduction. There are currently an estimated 300,000 items of Non-Road Mobile Machinery (NRMM) used by the UK construction sector, largely powered by diesel, and therefore generating significant carbon emissions. Work is underway across the UK construction sector to eliminate diesel from construction sites with a number of large infrastructure projects and main contractors setting commitments to reduce and eliminate the use of diesel from construction. However, this is an area which requires a huge amount of mindset and behaviour change.

QWhat are the greatest challenges in convincing industry to switch to battery and solar based solutions?

A. There have been slower adoption rates across industry for many factors, but a lot of this is concerned with a huge lack of accurate information. We are making it our mission to right this. Challenging the norm is never easy. There are many misconceptions when it comes to solar and alternative power use, so we have to work hard at myth busting.

Cost is often highlighted as a barrier to change, and whilst the initial outlay of the unit is often higher than traditional options, the lifetime costs are significantly cheaper and the dividends are quickly clear to see. On average customers who purchase our Prolight Solar Lighting tower are cost neutral before the end of the second year and save £3,000 a year per unit thereafter, as well as the savings on your ProPower I mentioned previously. Solar works all year round, in all weather conditions, even in the harshest of Scottish winters - we have the data to prove it.

QWhat will Prolectric be focusing on over the next 12 months?

A. Continuing to be at the forefront of the industry, driving positive change, we see it as our duty to educate the market. We will continue to collaborate with organisations who want to make a positive change to their business and the environment, working closely with wholesalers, national house builders, across the public sector and on largescale infrastructure projects. Helping businesses to move away from using polluting fossil fuels to achieve their carbon-saving goals and sustainability commitments, as well as saving money, remains our primary goal.

The UK generated 40.4 million tonnes of commercial and industrial waste in 2020. The EU estimates (2023) that member states produce more than 2.2 billion tonnes of total waste every year.

The current model of product development is ‘linear’; that is, ‘Raw materials – Design –Production –Distribution – Consumption – Collection – Waste Management/Landfill’, or simplified to ‘Take, Make, Use, Shred/Landfill’. It is this model that has raised the amount of electronic waste to unsustainable levels.

The circular economy is a model of production and consumption which places the emphasis on, ‘…sharing, leasing, reusing, repairing, refurbishing and recycling existing materials and products for as long as possible’.

QUALITY IS THE BEST POLICY

As safety is critical to all electrical installations, reliable test and measurement equipment remains a vital part of any contractor’s kit, says Mike Cullum, Northern Europe Sales Manager of IDEAL Industries EMEA and APAC.

Quality equipment often comes with a hefty price tag, and with electricians continuing to report concerns over rising costs, wholesalers must find a way to offer affordable test and measurement equipment for less, combining innovation, safety and value for money without compromising on quality.

The UK’s construction sector continues to struggle with huge increases in material costs, supply chain issues and rising fuel prices. A recent survey, which researched the top 10 challenges for the electrical industry in 2023, found the main worry for UK electricians was the rising cost of materials (48%), followed by rising fuel costs (29%).

Price rises

As a knock-on effect of rising prices, tradespeople are being forced to increase their prices. According to a 2023 nationwide study of tradespeople, more than two fifths (43%) said they had been forced to increase their prices substantially. In the face of ever-increasing costs, it’s crucial that electrical equipment offers value for money without compromising safety. When it comes to vital test and measurement equipment, however, there is often a huge disparity between the best, branded products, which are robust, accurate and consistent, and the more affordable alternatives, which are typically less reliable and more prone to error. This presents huge opportunity for wholesalers to cement relationships by offering a high-quality alternative to premium brands with comparable quality and functionality.

Having identified the need for a highquality range of test and measurement equipment that combines reliable safety and consistency with affordability, IDEAL Electrical used its global scale and knowhow to homogenise its test and measurement range, enabling the electrical trade to take a significant step up in quality, while taking a step down in price compared to the market leading brand.

Affordable test and measurement

Offering the best possible quality and innovation at an attractive price point, the test and measurement range from IDEAL Electrical comprises Circuit Tracers, Clamp Meters, Fork (split jaw) Meters, Digital Multimeters (DMMs), Voltage Meters, NonContact Voltage Testers and Infrared Thermometers. The range is segmented into tools for commercial, domestic and

apprentice use, enabling wholesalers to recommend the right product for their customers’ specific requirements.

The part numbering system makes it easy for wholesalers to suggest the correct tester. The base model has the lowest number, while the higher functioning/higher CAT rated testers have a higher part number. For example, the entry point non-contact voltage tester is 61627, the next model up is 61-637, and so on.

User-friendly design features

Key features of the range include a LEAD warning on the DMMs, which notifies the user if the test lead has been inserted into the wrong port. The FUSE notification feature, meanwhile, alerts the user to a

TEST EQUIPMENT
24 JUNE2024 PROFESSIONAL ELECTRICIANS WHOLESALER

blown fuse while allowing them to continue with measurements unaffected by the fuse. The range features vibrant yellow coloured casing, which makes it easy to identify the testers on site, and, as the casing is over moulded, several of the testers are robust enough to withstand drops and knocks with up to 2m drop protection. Several of the products also have IP ratings that provide certain levels of dust and water protection.

Probe holders on the back of the testers allow for two-hand testing and category ratings provide peace of mind that the tester is fit for the job and will pass scrutiny if the equipment is audited.

The newly launched IDEAL Circuit Tracer Plus revolutionises the industry with the inclusion of integrated continuity testing. It is a truly all-in-one solution that can trace, test for and locate shorts or splice errors without the need for a separate tester.

What electricians want

IDEAL Electrical conducted extensive research during the product development process, incorporating features and

benefits that end users identified as the most beneficial for safety and productivity.

As a result of user feedback, a backlight torch function that can be switched on independently from the testers has been included. In addition, the innovative, patented bottom display, which was previously only available on the TightSight Clamp Meters, has now also been incorporated into the Fork Meter and Circuit Tracers, aiding visibility for users when working in confined and poorly lit locations. By incorporating common features and functions throughout the range, electricians

can easily switch from one piece of equipment to another. For example, across many of the testers, non-contact voltage, high voltage and continuity indicators have a common display functionality and are located at the top of the unit.

A quality product at a competitive price As testing and measurement is of the utmost importance to the safety of all electrical installations, electricians need to know that they are investing in equipment that will not only do the job accurately, but will also be easy to use and last for years.

With IDEAL Electrical’s test and measurement range, wholesalers can offer electricians access to more durability, reliability and safety features for less, enabling them to save money without compromising on advanced technology or quality assurance – a win-win in today’s climate, where rising costs are the number one cause of concern for electricians.

PORT OFCALL

Every year, a significant number of electrical accidents, many involving portable appliances, are reported to the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) in the UK. This statistic underscores the critical importance of Portable Appliance Testing (PAT) in maintaining workplace safety.

Under the Electricity at Work Regulations (1989), any electrical equipment with the potential to cause injury must be kept in a safe condition. Additionally, the Fifth Edition of the IET Code of Practice, while advocating for risk assessments to minimise unnecessary testing, still mandates that PAT be conducted by a competent person. This requirement ensures the highest standards of electrical safety are maintained, which is vital for wholesalers to convey to their customers.

Understanding the broad spectrum of devices that fall under PAT regulations is crucial. Portable appliances include anything that uses a flexible cable or plug and socket, encompassing a wide range of equipment from hand-held tools to fixed appliances like kettles and hairdryers in commercial settings. Testing these types of appliances for safety is essential in preventing accidents and ensuring compliance with safety regulations.

Wholesalers can play a pivotal role in promoting electrical safety through the products they supply and the knowledge they can impart at the trade counter. The selection of PAT testing equipment is a significant decision, and the Martindale HPAT Series, for example, is easy to use,

Steve Dunning, Managing Director of Martindale Electric, looks at Portable Appliance Testing (PAT) and why it’s important wholesaler customers get it right.

efficient and represents the latest in portable testing technology. These devices, designed for testing on-site, are essential tools for upholding safety standards in various operational environments.

Along with user-friendly PAT equipment, Martindale also provides wholesalers and their customers with plenty of insights and information to help them carry out testing to the required level. Even if your customers are experienced users of portable appliance testers, they still might end up making one of these common mistakes, including:

1 NOT DOING A VISUAL INSPECTION

Any signs of damage and dents/scratches on the casing should be reported. If the cable shows signs of wear or is not plugged in properly, this should also be recorded, as it could indicate that the appliance is unsafe.

2 NOT DOING THE TESTS IN THE REQUIRED ORDER

If you do the insulation test first on a Class 1 appliance, you don’t know if the conductive earth path is good. (In Class 1 appliances, most PATs use the earth wire as the return signal path, so you don’t need a probe for the insulation test.) If the earth path isn’t tested and proven good, you can’t rely on the insulation test.

3 FORGETTING TO SWITCH THE APPLIANCE ON

Think about the situation where the live wire is broken inside the appliance and touching the outer casing. When you do the insulation test, everything inside the appliance should be at 250V/500V. The tester detects any voltage escaping to the appliance housing. But if you haven’t switched it on, the voltage can’t get through the live wire, nothing will escape, and you could have an incorrect pass on a dangerous appliance.

TEST EQUIPMENT PROFESSIONAL ELECTRICIANS WHOLESALER JUNE2024 27

4 TOUCHING THE APPLIANCE

The truth is most appliances pass the insulation test, so you get into the habit of holding drills, etc., to make it easier to hold the probe in contact. Then, one day, the appliance insulation fails, and… you get a shock, which is not dangerous in itself but could cause a reaction resulting in harm.

5 ONLY DOING ONE EARTH BOND TEST

Many of the most experienced testers fall for this. If an appliance has multiple, apparently isolated outer parts with separate earthed paths, each must be measured separately.

6 TAKING AN AVERAGE READING

If you have multiple earth paths, don’t take the average reading – it’s the worst case that matters.

7 TRYING TO DO AN EARTH BOND TEST ON A CLASS II APPLIANCE

It will, of course, fail, as Class II appliances have no earth. This is a very common problem and causes a large number of

calls to technical helplines.

8 ONLY DOING ONE INSULATION TEST

For the same reason in 5 above, this is a common fault. At how many places on a power tool could the insulation break down? Obviously, at the chuck, but what about the ventilation slots, the trigger, the assembly screws, and the speed control? The best solution is to wrap the device in kitchen foil and test it once on the foil (you can buy special conductive bags, but foil is cheaper).

9 NOT CHECKING THE FUSE IS CONDUCTING (SEE POINT 3 ABOVE)

You don’t have to do a separate fuse test –the operation test will prove that the appliance is both on and the fuse is okay.

10 FAILING TO DO A FUNCTION TEST (POWERING IT UP)

Some entry-level PATs don’t have the ability to power up the appliance. Plug the appliance into the wall socket (after PAT testing) and make sure it works properly.

11 NOT TESTING AT THE CORRECT VOLTAGE

It is very common for people to make the mistake of performing a 500V test on surge protection extension leads. These require a lower voltage 250V test. This is especially helpful when testing appliances with surge-protected circuits, such as sensitive IT equipment, at 250V.

12 NOT CALCULATING THE CORRECT PASS LEVEL

Many appliances are plugged into longer power cables than those specified by the manufacturer. The current pass level for an appliance with a longer power cable is calculated differently than the pass level for an appliance with a shorter power cable. This can be determined by a calculation available in the PAT code of practice.

FLEX APPEAL

The choice of which type of flexible conduit system to use for a particular application is an important one. It is vital that the solution you opt for not only protects all areas of the cabling but provides the appropriate levels of protection for its specific environment.

However, as every electrician knows, there is so much choice available that it can be a confusing decision. One of the biggest challenges for electrical installers and contractors is time. The requirement to move onto the next task quickly will often see electricians defaulting to products they know well and have used multiple times.

Although flexible conduit might look the same visually, with similar colours and profiles, material properties can differ significantly. There are numerous products available on the market, often for a lower cost than seemingly comparable alternatives. While it can be tempting to select based on previous installation experience or personal preference, this can be a false economy, so it is essential to verify all recommended performance criteria to avoid inadvertently reducing the level of safety and increasing risk.

So, what are some of the factors you need to consider –and how can you ensure that you get it right every time?

Selecting the right flexible conduit system can be a tricky task. Rob Sprason, Technical Sales Manager from Atkore Flexicon outlines how to get it right.

Ongoing development

Historically, conduits and conduit fittings were only available in metal, but, over time, the development of engineered plastics saw more flexible, corrosion and water-resistant solutions enter the market.

These solutions could withstand large temperature ranges, offered improved chemical and oil resistance, and enjoyed a high level of mechanical strength. As the

market acceptance for these systems grew, so nylon (polyamide) became an increasingly important material. However, metallic and composite systems also remain in demand because of their excellent mechanical strength and EMC screening possibilities.

Get the specification right

Specifying cable protection based on one property alone can be a costly mistake and the full range of environmental factors should be considered. These can include exposure to extremes of temperature, UV radiation, harsh chemicals and the likelihood of water or dust ingress.

In addition, fire performance, compression strength and impact or abrasion resistance, risk of explosion or even the resistance to build up of bacteria could need to be considered.

Nylon, metal or composite?

Where fatigue life or impact resistance is important, installers should consider nylon polyamide (PA) corrugated flexible conduits, which can offer high impact strength and recovery if crushed, combined with excellent temperature performance.

Polypropylene and PVC conduit systems are available; however, both systems are inferior to nylon polyamide (PA) when it comes to fire performance, resistance to solvents and abrasion, as well as UV properties in external applications when exposed to the damaging effects of the sun.

With no exposed metallic content, nonmetallic conduits do not rust or corrode when subjected to water, thus maintaining performance and appearance over time. In addition, it is worth considering labour and installation time. Non-metallic systems are often quicker to install than metallic options as they are easier and faster to

30 JUNE2024 PROFESSIONAL ELECTRICIANS WHOLESALER CABLE MANAGEMENT

cut. Non-metallic fittings will typically be one piece and simply push on and twist to secure. This makes them easier to handle as well as providing a lighter weight system.

For installations subject to increased UV exposure, it is important when specifying non-metallic and polymercoated metal conduit to consider that ultraviolet (UV) radiation will naturally degrade any plastic materials. Failure could result in materials cracking, an increase in brittleness, reduced flexibility and lower impact strength, thus compromising the performance of the system or equipment.

Metallic flexible conduit typically has a higher level of crush resistance, high mechanical strength and can provide excellent EMC screening properties. Metallic systems are ideal for applications that require a very high compression or pull-off strength, or where there is the need to protect cables from exposure in hazardous environments. They also offer excellent performance for extremes of temperatures, both high and low – with

uncoated options such as stainless steel offering a performance range from +600°C through to -100°C.

Composite products, such as plastic sheathing on metal conduits, metal overbraiding or metal threads on plastic fittings can also offer the ideal combination of light weight and high strength.

Retrofitting with ease

In existing applications, retrofitting cable protection has, traditionally, been a more complex task, with the installer required to pull existing cabling through the open end of a conduit system.

Conduit system manufacturers are therefore developing enhanced retrofit options to make it easier and quicker to install cable protection in existing applications, such as interlocking slit conduit. The construction allows existing cabling to be inserted laterally via a slit opening, enabling the installer to wrap a flexible conduit around the cables retrospectively with minimal disruption and without the cable being exposed.

Specify a complete system

The specification process should also take into consideration the range of fittings available, especially where these can help reduce installation time. Conventional fittings can take time to assemble and install, whereas newer designs feature innovations such as simple, one-piece push and twist conduit connection. These can offer significant time, simplicity and cost benefits, particularly where there are numerous cables to terminate.

In conclusion

When specifying the correct flexible conduit system, making the right choice is not merely a matter of convenience; it is essential for ensuring the reliability and efficiency of electrical installations. By embracing these principles, electricians can prioritise safety and performance and ensure the installation is fit for the future.

MINIMISING RISK

Jake Green, Head of Technical Engagement with Scolmore Group, considers the general requirements of Regulation 521.10.202.

After several tragedies, Regulation 521.11.201 (AMD 3

BS 7671: 2008) was introduced; its purpose being to limit the risk to firefighters from entanglement by cables when they entered or exited a premises.

This regulation has now been renumbered as 521.10.202 but remains essentially the same except for the removal of any reference to escape routes. It now reads: “Wiring systems shall be supported such that they will not be liable to premature collapse in the event of a fire.”

This requirement should not be confused with the recommendations of standards like BS5266-1 (emergency lighting) and BS5839-1 (fire detection and fire alarm systems), which recommend methods of cable support to maintain circuit integrity during a fire.

Escape

routes and BS 7671

The original regulation referred to escape routes, and this generated a level of confusion: ‘How should escape route be defined?’

“ It is important, therefore, that electrical contractors and other installers give due consideration to the support given to wiring systems.”

BS7671 defined escape routes differently to that used in other guides, regulations and legislation. For example:

● BS 7671 – ‘Path to follow for access to a safe area in the event of an emergency’.

● Building standards technical handbook – ‘…means a route by which a person may reach a place of safety…’.

● Approved Document B in England and Wales – ‘…that part which a person has to traverse before reaching either the safety of a final exit or the comparative safety of a protected escape route….’

The removal of ‘escape routes’ from the regulation now means that it applies to all areas of the installation.

Premature collapse

There is no specific definition of ‘premature collapse’ to be found in Part 2 of BS 7671. One dictionary definition of ‘premature’ is, ‘occurring or done before the usual or proper time; too early’.

Since the purpose of Regulation 521.10.202 is not to maintain the critical signal path, rather to limit the risk to firefighters; premature collapse should be considered in relation to that single purpose.

Electrical contractors, network installers and the like are not best able to judge how fires behave, the likely temperatures that will be attained, nor how firefighters will carry out their role within a premises that is on fire. It is important, therefore, that electrical contractors and other installers give due consideration to the support given to wiring systems to provide maximum reasonable application of Regulation 521.10.202.

Unicrimp, a Scolmore Group company, offers a comprehensive range of cable accessories within its Q-Fire fire-rated range that are designed to provide the necessary protection from premature collapse.

CABLE MANAGEMENT
32 JUNE2024 PROFESSIONAL ELECTRICIANS WHOLESALER

There is a great deal of responsibility placed on contractors to apply Regulation 521.10.202, not because they want to meet minimum expectations, rather because they want to protect firefighters who are working under extremely dangerous conditions.

An electrical contractor should consider, as a minimum, the following:

● Wall fixings:

■ Careful consideration should be given to the mass of the wiring system that is to be supported (including the trunking, cable tray, etc. with the cables in situ).

■ Will the structure of the building maintain sufficient fire resistance to permit cables to avoid the need for metallic supports? Will such supports be sufficient if firefighters damage ceilings when applying water?

■ Cable clips – metallic clips are essential as indicated by Note 3 and 4 of Regulation 521.10.202.

■ Brackets or internal clips for PVC trunking – to keep the lid or cables in place (see Note 3 of Regulation 521.10.202).

Conclusion

Electrical contractors should carefully consider their responsibilities when

installing wiring systems. Under fire conditions, failure to make the right installation choices may lead to serious consequences.

“ Hard work in hot and humid conditions can not only be uncomfortable, but hazardous.”

HERE COMES THE SUN

Ben Stacey, Snickers Workwear Product Specialist, discusses the risks surrounding an invisible hazard – UV exposure on site.

Dressing right for the working environment you’re in is very important – not only for working efficiency, but also forUV protection in the summer.

The Institute of Occupational Safety and Health estimates that outdoor workers can be exposed to over 80% more UV radiation than indoor workers and, if the UV index reaches three or above, sun protection measures should be taken. It may come as a surprise to some that the UV index regularly exceeds this level during the summer months in the UK and, according to the Met Office, UV rays can be strong enough to cause sunburn here between April and September with 80% of UVA rays passing through cloud.

The link between skin cancer and sun exposure is now more widely understood and workers who regularly work outdoors are most definitely at increased risk from overexposure to UV radiation. With one in three cancers diagnosed as a skin cancer, each episode of sunburn, however small, increases the risk of getting it. So why do some people who work outdoors in the UK not use sun protection cream and other sun protection measures – such as proper working clothes?

Hard work in hot and humid conditions can not only be uncomfortable, but hazardous. So, when the heat is on, it’s important that you take the necessary precautions to stay cool, dry, and wellcovered. That’s where Snickers Workwear’s moisture-wicking, and UVprotective workwear can play an important part in your personal protection and wellbeing. When you’re choosing the right working clothes up for a hard day’s work outside in the summer, there are three important factors to consider.

Fabric technology and UV protection

For summer working, choose workwear that is designed to create a kind of climate control system for your body. Snickers Workwear does just that. Designed to help you stay cool, the summer collection has garments that provide UPV40+ protection to make getting the job done as comfortable and safe as possible. Breathable fabrics deliver better ventilation and dry faster once they’re wet from perspiration. Even though cotton is thought to be a lightweight fabric, its high absorbency makes it dry very slowly. Cotton garments drenched in sweat are uncomfortable.

Your body temperature

In warm, sunny working conditions, you need clothes with exceptional breathability and ventilation to avoid heat stress. With that in mind, Snickers Workwear uses stretchable fabrics with 37.5 Fabric Technology. Patented particles in the fabric help your body maintain an ideal core temperature – a process of thermoregulation - by removing perspiration vapours before they can turn into liquid sweat. That means you can stay both cool and dry no matter how hot it gets.

Personal as well as environmental protection

Sustainability is a key part of Snickers Workwear’s design and development philosophy. It’s not just functionality, practicality and the physical demands on the body when working hard which are key drivers in the brand’s product development, it’s the physical demands that product manufacturing places on the environment that matter too.

“ In warm, sunny working conditions, you need clothes with exceptional breathability. ”

So, if you’re thinking about what’s most practical and beneficial to wear this summer and, if it’s performance and protection you need, check out the upgraded lightweight and breathable 37.5 fabric in Snickers Workwear’s mid- and base-layer clothes. With superb cooling technology, they’re great for demanding tasks on site as well as UV protection.

Style, comfort, functionality and performance have always been key drivers in Snickers Workwear clothing development over the years. But now, modern day concerns about sustainability and personal protection from the invisible hazards have brought a new dimension into the technical design of Snickers Workwear for this summer.

Simon Shenton, Head of LED Development at Luceco, discusses the company’s approach to creating a more sustainable future, not only for itself but also for its valued customers.

Combining drive, energy and expertise, lighting and electrical provider Luceco Group is dedicated to reducing its absolute greenhouse gases (GHG) emissions by 46.2% by 2031, tackling climate change through not only innovative products but also via business operations, people and culture, as well as collaboration with both experts and consumers within the electrotechnical industry. We feel that a holistic approach to sustainability such as this is the best way to achieve our goals.

We can all see the importance of working towards a more sustainable future for ourselves, our children and beyond and, in the midst of the climate emergency, we must work hard to achieve this.

Sustainable business

We believe that companies such as ours have a responsibility to recognise this need and ensure that we continually evolve our entire business operation for the benefit of all. To this end, we are focusing on the development of low carbon products, ensuring that the plastic we use is recycled and that our packaging is recyclable.

However, there is a balance to maintain between delivering a sustainable business without compromising product quality and performance. Along with scrutinising our

manufacturing capability to improve our processes, we are constantly striving to find new ways to further improve the performance of our products – whether they are electrical components, EV chargers or lighting - with our ultimate goal being to create cutting-edge designs with lower carbon footprints.

“ There is a balance to maintain between delivering a sustainable business without compromising product quality and performance.”

Illuminating the importance of Net Zero

At Luceco, we recognise the important role we play in achieving Net Zero, and our low carbon products can help businesses reduce energy consumption and achieve their own sustainability targets.

Our product development is focused on driving forward low carbon and green commitments - we are continuously improving the lumens per watt of our LED products to give customers more light for every watt of energy they consume. Additionally, we are designing ways to improve the distribution of LEDs, reducing the number of lights needed and overall energy consumption.

One example of Luceco's sustainable lighting solutions is the Luxbay Ultra warehouse linear product, designed to replace traditional discharge lighting in commercial and industrial settings. The Luxbay Ultra, consumes 50% less energy compared to traditional lighting solutions and has a longer lifespan.

While technology, especially LED, is developing rapidly, we want to see recommendations, standards and guidance surrounding the technology improved to match its potential as this will help push the sustainability agenda further forward. As part of our commitment to transparency, we signed up for the Carbon Disclosure Project and achieved operational Net Zero in 2021 and joined the Influential Science-Based Targets initiative (SBTi) to continue reducing our carbon footprint.

Helping other companies achieve their sustainability goals

Luceco's products can help businesses reduce their energy consumption and achieve their own sustainability targets. By investing in low carbon solutions, companies can make a positive impact on the environment while also saving on energy costs. Luceco is at the forefront of thought leadership in this area, leading the way in sustainable product development and committing to reducing both our and our customers’ carbon footprints.

48 JUNE2024 PROFESSIONAL ELECTRICIANS WHOLESALER

With more customers approaching us with their own sustainability goals, by conducting a lighting audit, we can make recommendations for new fixtures and controls that are designed to reduce energy consumption.

LED lights typically produce useful light for two or even three times longer and consume up to 80% less energy than their conventional counterparts. This longer LED life of produces savings throughout the product lifecycle, including savings on materials, installation costs (as systems could run for 10 years or more) as well as maintenance and replacement costs, making them the go-to option for companies who are seriously targeting net zero.

New standards to strive for

The Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) aims to mobilise companies to take action on climate change by setting science based greenhouse gas emissions reduction targets. For the LED lighting industry, SBTi provides guidance on setting targets in line with limiting global warming to 1.5°C above

pre-industrial levels involving reducing emissions of all aspects LED lighting, including manufacturing, transportation, use and end-of-life disposal.

SBTi provides a framework for companies such as Luceco to develop and validate their targets, and its guidelines are endorsed by leading sustainability organisations, including the United Nations Global Compact, the World Wildlife Fund, and the Carbon Trust.

By committing to science based targets, we can progress towards a more sustainable future.

It’s never been more important for everyone to assess their energy usage and the impact we all have on the planet. Climate change is one of the biggest challenges the world faces and as a manufacturer of low carbon products, we at Luceco have a role to play in achieving Net Zero.

“ For the LED lighting industry, SBTi provides guidance

on setting targets in line with limiting global warming to 1.5°C above pre-industrial levels involving reducing emissions of all aspects LED lighting, including manufacturing, transportation, use and end-of-life disposal.”
