DANCING IN THE DARK LIGHT
Welcome to the May issue of Professional Electricians Wholesaler. By the time you’re reading this I can only hope the first signs of summer have finally arrived as winter seemed to do its very best to cling on for as long as possible well into April. Perhaps the inclusion of a special feature on outdoor lighting is a precurser to long warm evenings outside, enjoying barbecues, drinking fine wine and dancing until long after the sunset and our gardens are lit up like a fairy’s home..….sorry, mind drifted there.
It’s probably fair to say that while smart technology and building controls are the ‘brains’ in the world of electrical products, lighting offers the ‘glamour’. It’s the bit that we can see, and we therefore not only want it to work well, we want it to look good too, whether it’s in our living rooms, on the front of a shop or in a public park. There are of course a number of uses for outdoor lighting, from creating a welcoming atmosphere in pub gardens, to important safety and security measures in both domestic and commercial markets. The burgeoning smart technology market has increased the scope of opportunity for outdoor lighting, resulting in a wide choice of products that wholesalers and installers can take advantage of. Customers are likely to give a fair degree of thought to their choice of lighting, taking into consideration its aesthetic appeal as well as the effectiveness, cost and energy efficiency of the product.
Outdoor lighting also offers opportunities in the world of renewables and green technology, as another of our special features this month focuses on the potential of permanent solar lighting solutions.
Last but not least, our third special feature focuses on home automation – a particularly popular subject largely due to how your everyday customer can relate to the kind of products now flooding the market. It’s not so long ago that home automation was the kind of thing only available to the rich and famous. In my earlier days as an editor in this sector I was lucky enough to be shown around what would then have been considered a ‘house of the future’. It was a brand new mansion with multiple bedrooms and a home cinema room listed among its big selling points. However, the kind of technology it featured is now finding its way into affordable housing because of the advantages it offers in terms of userfriendly convenience and improved energy management.
This month I will be in attendance at the Building Controls Industry Association (BCIA) Awards, which will offer a glimpse of some of the innovative technology going into our buildings today. This really is an exciting industry to be involved in.
See you in May.

ANSELL LIGHTING PRESENTED WITH KING’S AWARD FOR ENTERPRISE
The Lord-Lieutenant of Greater Manchester, Diane Hawkins, recently visited Ansell Lighting to present it with its King’s Award for Enterprise for Innovation.
Ansell, based on Stonecross Industrial Park in Warrington, was recognised for its patented Panel Pod product in the first King’s Award for Enterprise honours in 2023.
The award was presented to Ansell’s Managing Director, Mark Abbott, at a ceremony at the company’s headquarters, which was also attended by the MP for Leigh, James Grundy, the Mayor of Wigan,
Councillor Kevin Anderson, the Deputy Mayor of Warrington, Councillor Carol Benson, and local Warrington Councillors, alongside key members of staff.
The Panel Pod was created in response to an identified industry need and converts an LED panel light into an emergency light in less than 60 seconds, without needing a conversion kit or additional ceiling fixture to install. Emergency lighting is required by British law and workplace health and safety guidance, so if the lights go out in the case of fire or other incident it stays on for up to three hours.
“ The King’s Award for Enterprise recognises outstanding UK businesses. ”
The King’s Award for Enterprise recognises outstanding UK businesses, with recipients being able to use the esteemed King’s Awards Emblem for five years. Mark Abbott, Managing Director of Ansell Lighting, said: “We were delighted to welcome the Lord-Lieutenant, Deputy Mayor and our local politicians to Ansell. Achieving this award, especially in the first year of the King’s Awards, was testament to the hard work and dedication of our innovation team and everyone involved in the business.”

NICEIC HIGHLIGHTS ENERGY STORAGE OPPORTUNITIES
NICEIC CALLSFOR ELECTRICIANS TO PREPARE FOR BATTERY BOOM
As the UK continues to lead the way in energy storage investment, NICEIC is encouraging electricians to start upskilling to prepare for growing demand and, in turn, help play a lead role in the clean energy transition.
Amid rising energy prices and a sense of growing eco-responsibility, recent years have seen an unprecedented increase in home energy storage by using batteries.
According to recent figures 2023 saw a huge 1,700 per cent year-on-year increase in annual battery storage installation. Across the board, a separate study reveals the total battery project pipeline now stands at 84.8GW as of December 2023, comprising a year-on-year increase of 50.3GW.
In light of this, NICEIC is advocating for electrical contractors to upskill into energy storage systems as a way to support customers to reduce energy costs, gain energy security and lower their carbon footprint.
NICEIC Technical Director, Paul Collins, commented: “British householders are paying far more for electricity than they were a couple of years ago. In fact, it was recently reported that UK energy prices have risen faster than almost any other developed country since 2019. In this way, reducing reliance on the national grid is becoming increasingly attractive for those seeking to reduce energy costs and also do their bit for the planet.
“A critical component of this marked shift is energy storage. For those homeowners with rooftop solar panels, what’s great about adding battery storage is that it can allow them to become self-sufficient and negate the need for grid supply. This can save the average consumer hundreds of pounds a year and relieve cost of living pressures. Another big benefit is that these systems can provide critical backup power –something which is becoming a bigger consideration amid grid insecurity issues.
“Another option is where consumers use storage to reduce bills by purchasing energy at a low tariff at a time when there is a low demand and store it to meet an internal demand at other times, usually when consumption peaks, typically during the evening.
“The upshot is that installers have a huge new revenue opportunity as homeowners will increasingly turn to them for advice on the latest and most advanced energy storage solutions and help them to decide the most suitable approach for their home and needs.”
To provide a helping hand, NICEIC has introduced a new qualification on Electrical Energy Storage Systems (EESS).
TAMLITE WELCOMES NEW BCO RESEARCH AGENDA FOR SUSTAINABLE OFFICES
Tamlite Lighting has welcomed the British Council for Offices (BCO’s) new research agenda for sustainable offices which highlights the importance of efficient lighting.
The BCO has published its new research agenda in a 58-page working document that sets out a vision for the office as a sustainable part of the built environment. This vision is explored across four themed ‘Pillars’ – Economy, Business, Technology and Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) – to shape a framework for a new research agenda.
Each pillar topic re-evaluates the notion of offices as capital assets, in light of the broader role of offices as a source of community and sustainable placemaking in the UK. The document states:
“An integral part of the brief for each research pillar was the need to consider change, not only in terms of the detailed issues being faced today but, critically, to take a longer-term perspective in order to anticipate challenges and turn them into opportunities.”
The research agenda calls for a focus on how to incorporate sustainable features, including efficient lighting, and technologies to reduce energy consumption, lower the carbon footprint, and promote environmental sustainabilityin the office sector.
Commenting on the BCO’s new research agenda, Richard Wharrad, Group Manager & Head of SSV at Tamlite, said: “The direction of travel for the BCO is clear; sustainability and ESG
will frame the BCO’s research focus for years to come, influencing the decisionmaking processes of its members.
“As a leading lighting manufacturer committed to delivering sustainable lighting solutions, it is heartening to see the BCO recognise the contribution of lighting to sustainable offices. Compared to traditional lights, LEDs last five times longer and use 80% less energy. Less energy use means reduced carbon emissions, as well as cost savings.
“We look forward to seeing the results of the BCO’s research on office space over the next few years and the additional detail it will bring about how lighting is an effective, low cost, and high performance measure for supporting sustainability.”
AEI CABLES HIGHLIGHTS LEGISLATION REQUIREMENTS
AEI CABLES URGES SUPPLY CHAIN TO FOLLOW LEGISLATION
AEI Cables is highlighting the need for the supply chain to be aware of the various pieces of legislation and guidance in the selection of cables to help make Britain’s buildings safer.
The systems powered by these cables – including smoke and heat extraction systems – assist fire services in firefighting and a safe evacuation in the case of life safety. The company has been communicating the importance of following the technical guidance for the selection and installation of cables for Category 3 Control fire performance
cables under the revised British Standard BS8519: 2020. These cables reduce harmful smoke, toxic gases and flame spread in the event of a real fire.
At the same time, AEI Cables has been raising awareness of the Building Safety
Act 2022 which makes new demands on the supply chain in the interests of safety and governance. Stuart Dover, general manager of AEI Cables, said: “These are important pieces of guidance and legislation which have been introduced for the right reasons to add further levels of safety to the supply chain. We can’t emphasise enough how important it is to get the selection of cables right for these applications. If these systems fail because the cable is not able to function properly then the consequences are apparent. Lives and property are at stake here.”

IDENTIFYING AND MANAGING STRESS
How we manage stress can make a huge difference in how we look after our mental and physical wellbeing. April marked Stress Awareness Month and EIC are discussing ways to identify stress, the common causes and how best to cope.
IDENTIFYING STRESS
Stress is a natural physiological and psychological response to demands and threats. When we face a challenge, our body releases hormones like adrenaline and cortisol, which prepare us for action –a reaction known as the “fight-or-flight” response. While stress is a normal part of life, persistent, unrelieved stress can lead to distress.
To identify stress, look for signs such as irritability, anxiety, depression, headaches, and sleep disturbances. People under stress may also experience muscle tension, changes in appetite, or difficulty concentrating. It's crucial to differentiate between short-term stress, which can be motivating, and chronic stress, which can be harmful and lead to health issues like hypertension and a weakened immune system.
COPING WITH STRESS
Coping with stress effectively requires both short-term strategies to manage immediate stressors and long-term techniques to maintain overall well-being. Short-term strategies include deep breathing, mindfulness meditation, or taking a walk to clear your mind. Long-term stress management involves regular physical
activity, maintaining a balanced diet, ensuring adequate sleep, and pursuing hobbies.
It’s also essential to recognise when to seek professional help. Therapists and counsellors can provide support and teach coping strategies to manage stress better. Building a network of friends and family for emotional support is equally important.
WORK STRESS & BURNOUT
Work stress occurs when the demands of the job exceed an individual's ability to cope. Factors such as high workloads, tight deadlines, and challenging relationships with colleagues or managers can contribute to work stress. Burnout is a state of emotional, physical, and mental exhaustion caused by prolonged and excessive stress. It's characterised by
feelings of energy depletion, cynicism related to one’s job, and reduced professional efficacy.
Preventing burnout involves recognising early signs of work stress and taking steps to manage it. Employers can help by promoting a healthy work-life balance, providing support resources, and ensuring workloads are manageable. Individuals can reduce stress by setting clear boundaries between work and personal life, practicing relaxation techniques, and seeking support from colleagues, friends, or professionals.
FAMILY AND RELATIONSHIPS
Families are systems of interconnected and interdependent individuals; any change in one member affects the whole system. Stress within a family can arise from various sources such as financial difficulties, illness, or interpersonal conflict. In relationships, stress can stem from communication breakdowns, mismatched expectations, or external pressures.
To maintain healthy family dynamics, it’s important to communicate openly, share responsibilities, and support each other during stressful times. Cultivating empathy and understanding within the family unit can significantly reduce stress levels.
FACE TO FACE ROLEC
In this month’s Face to Face we speak to Frankie Mellon, Managing Director of Rolec, to get the latest on the EV charging market.
QCan you tell us a bit about how and when Rolec was established?
A. Established in 1990 by a founder with a passion for innovation and green technology.
While it's true that electric vehicles weren't prevalent on the roads at that time, Rolec's origins weren't rooted in the EV industry. Instead, we carved out our niche in the leisure sector, establishing ourselves as pioneers in manufacturing outdoor electrical equipment, water, and sanitation utilities tailored for caravan and holiday parks.
Soon after, we ventured into the marina industry, encountering a unique set of challenges that spurred our innovation. It was within this sector that we first experienced the demand for smart services. It didn’t take long for our team to engineer connected hardware solutions that gained traction across marinas globally. Today, we maintain our position as a world leader in marina services and utility products.
As we embarked on our journey of evolution, we introduced our latest division, EV charging, in 2007—which even then was early for the EV industry. When we launched the WallPod in 2007, there were only two other companies in the UK dedicated to EV charging, which might be hard to believe now. Since then, our trajectory has been marked by a solid track record of providing innovative EV charging solutions for domestic, commercial, and public settings.
Q
How can wholesalers get involved with the burgeoning EV charging market?
A. Rolec is firmly established within the wholesale distribution network, distinguishing ourselves as one of the select few manufacturers who have stayed true to this model since the launch of our EV charging range, and we still find great value in this approach. From initial prospects to final transactions, we channel all enquiries through our trusted network of wholesalers.
We have been building relationships with a prestigious portfolio of blue-chip customers with a strong national
“ We’re actively exploring new ways to provide even more value to our distribution partners.”
wholesale network for 12 years, which has grown to include over 3,500 distributors and stockists.
Now, we're actively exploring new ways to provide even more value to our distribution partners. Our commitment extends beyond hardware; we provide specialised industry and product training to equip our partners with the insights and skills they need to excel. While our dedicated wholesale support team and key sales advisors stand ready to assist every step of the way. Choosing to work with Rolec means partnering with a team with decades of combined industry knowledge completely at your disposal.
Q Will the latest generation of affordable home chargers further accelerate EV take-up in the UK?
A. Absolutely. The standard features integrated into home chargers today, particularly in terms of software solutions and security measures, have significantly eased the minds of potential EV adopters. The convenience of simply pairing their vehicles with their home chargers, coupled with integration options with their energy providers for optimal charging, better rates, and charge scheduling, has made the transition to electric vehicles much more appealing and straightforward for customers. With these advancements, it appears that we've successfully addressed the queries that were commonly raised two to three years ago. Which can be seen in chargepoints like our award-winning ZURA.
QWhat are some of the built-in features customers are coming to expect from modern EV charging units?
A. Built-in features vary between domestic and commercial charging requirements. Many of the additional commercial features required often increase the price and potentially outweigh the benefits for a home charger. Typical features for home charging include Wi-Fi connectivity, charge scheduling, solar integration, and a user-friendly app.
Additional specifications for commercial charging solutions can include multiple connectivity methods such as Wi-Fi, 4G, and Ethernet, with charging enabled via app, contactless payment, or RFID access methods.
With the growing demand for compatibility with various back-office systems, it is essential that the charger offers flexibility in configuration to seamlessly integrate with any platform. Our hardware that we sell to wholesalers is designed to adapt to any software, facilitating smooth onboarding onto the customer's chosen provider.
We're witnessing a surge in demand for advanced features beyond the standard offerings, particularly for contactless payment solutions, screen integration, and dynamic load balancing and management –which take into consideration the building’s electrical supply and demand, dynamically adjusting the chargepoints as needed to optimise performance and efficiency.
QWhat are the key considerations when selecting an EV charger to use at home or in a commercial setting?
A. Home charger customers are a lot more price sensitive, emphasising the need for cost-effective solutions that are both space-saving and aesthetically pleasing. Connectivity options, based on what methods are available on site, are also an important consideration. When it comes to commercial charging, several additional considerations come into play:
“ We’re witnessing a surge in demand for advanced features beyond the standard offerings. ”
Location: There isn't a one-size-fits all approach to EV charging, which is why our range of chargepoints offers solutions tailored for home, workplace, and public locations. For heavy-duty and exposed environments, our SecuriCharge and AutoCharge models, made of robust steel, are ideal.
Socket Options: Opting for dual or quad socketed units to minimise groundwork and cabling, thus maximising the number of available outlets.
Connectivity Challenges: Addressing connectivity, particularly in underground or communal parking spaces, to ensure reliable operation.
Charging Speeds: Choosing units with varying speeds ranging from 7.4kW up to 240kW to accommodate different requirements and consider the operational efficiencies of the site, including vehicle downtime and charging session turnaround times.
Data Management: Identifying what data needs to be extracted from the management system, such as kW consumption breakdown per driver or per
vehicle. Which allows businesses to accurately assess their true operational costs of maintaining an electric fleet.
QWhat are Rolec’s primary objectives for the next 12 months?
A. As we move into 2024 and beyond, we are dedicated to maintaining our leading position within our niche industries. As a genuine manufacturer and development company, our comprehensive range of products and services stands unparalleled.
Our wider goal is to increase the support and resources we offer to contractors. As part of this initiative, we are also expanding our technical services, doubling the size of our technical support department, and implementing weekly product training and refresher courses. As well as encouraging installers and distributors to reach out with feedback to help us improve our services in the future.
Our core focus revolves around enhancing the services we offer to our wholesale and electrical contractor networks. This encompasses a spectrum of support, ranging from pre-sales inquiries to comprehensive project assistance, quotations, onboarding, and handover processes. We're currently on an exciting development journey aimed at seamlessly integrating these elements, and we look forward to sharing the news later on this year.

There’s a big market for landscape lighting and if you stock the right products and can offer good advice then according to Laura Chadwick, Marketing Director at Collingwood Lighting, you will tap into this lucrative area.
THE LIE OF THE LANDSCAPE
As we move into spring and warmer weather our minds are drawn more to the outdoors and although daylight hours are longer, many homeowners and commercial businesses want lighting solutions to make their outdoor space a bit more special as the light begins to fade.
Many electricians are realising that this is a good opportunity since they can provide both advice and an installed solution. If you can help them secure such projects and stock the right products then there are good opportunities for you to add value to their business.
Thinking about outdoor light
Knowing some basics about landscape lighting will help you both advise an installer and know what products they are likely to need.
You can generally split such lighting schemes into three areas; functional areas, feature areas and entertainment areas.
For functional areas the installer will need to provide the correct lighting for a task. It may be for security, to light storage areas or make sure that a path and steps are properly lit for safety.
Feature areas may include the outside of a building, plants, sculptures or even water, they can become a focal point when it grows dark. And entertainment areas need to create ambience.
What to stock?
Different areas will need different lighting solutions. Let’s start with the outside of a building as it’s the first thing that a visitor will see. Security is essential, so identifying areas that need lighting, perhaps with PIR sensors, is a first step. Beyond that a good external lighting scheme will captivate passers-by and create a positive statement.
The first question to ask the installer is whether they want to light the whole building or just certain areas such as the main doorway, signage or to pick out interesting features.
Uplights are great choice for feature lighting because they are hidden away in daylight hours. Installers can mount them in the ground or on the building using adjustable brackets. It’s wise to stock options with different power outputs and
beam angles to meet different needs. The installer may need high, mid or low power ground lights depending on the size of the building and the feature.
In addition, the contractor will need to avoid unwanted light spillage, glare and light pollution. This means the light will need targeting, so they will need to think about the angle of beam. Again, there are different product options, from a wide beam of 110˚ for creating a wash of light, 45˚ for a swath of light across a dedicated area, right down to a 6˚ beam for closely directed light perhaps for an entrance or specific details that the customer wants to pick out.
Wall lights can also highlight features or illuminate entrances. Again, think about products with different beam angles depending on what the installer wants the light to do.
Outdoor entertaining
Whether you are supplying lighting for someone’s patio or for an outdoor entertainment area for a restaurant or a pub, it’s all about having the right products to create a relaxing ambience.
Think about providing soffit downlights, grounds lights, wall lights or even LED strip lights. The installer or lighting designer may want to complement this with wall or overhead lights and use ground lights to pick out certain features or plants as you would for the outside of a building.
For working areas, perhaps for outdoor cooking, the installer will need to provide a higher light output and will need wall or downlights that they can angle to where the customer needs the light to avoid any unnecessary glare or light spillage.
Garden lighting
Just like lighting the outside of a building,
there could be features in a garden that an installer needs to highlight, whether it’s a tree or shrub or perhaps a water feature. Ground lights with different angled beams are a sound choice but it’s also worth considering spike lights. These are easy to move and tilt giving the customer the chance to move and reposition them where they want according to the season or future plans.
Safe passage
It’s vital that people can move safely at night. Whether it’s a path or driveway, good lighting will help them and will also form part of an overall lighting scheme by drawing the eye. There are a number of lighting products that an installer can use including low glare downlights that won’t dazzle, strip lights or bollards.
Steps are another area that will need good lighting for safety and decoration. Asymmetric lighting or a hood will direct
the light downwards where it is needed and avoid glare. An asymmetric beam is also ideal for illuminating wider steps, while decorative mini lights are perfect for narrower flights.
Putting it all together
Working outdoors IP ratings are vital. For general outdoor lighting an installer will need a fitting with at least IP67. If any of the lighting is likely to be submerged, for example ground lights or pond lighting, then make sure that the products are IP68 rated.
For the installation its better for the installer to use low voltage outside so a driver to convert mains to low voltage would be a must. Also think about water proof junction boxes and IP rated connectors.
And to round everything off, no one wants the lights on all night, so lighting control is another addition. It might simply be a timer or PIR sensor on lighting circuits, or for something a bit more special suggest smart lighting control. Security lighting will need different control to the ambient lighting as it’s serving a different purpose.
For the astute contractor outdoor lighting is good business. If as a wholesaler you can help them win such business and be a source of the products that they will need, then you will share in their success now and in the future.
In 2024, four specific features are leading outdoor lighting trends. Consumers are looking for products that combine smart technology, sustainability, security, and stylish, hard-wearing designs.
Simon Shenton, Head of LED Product Development at Luceco, explains how wholesalers can make the most of these trends in the products they purchase.
FANTASTIC FOUR
SMART TECHNOLOGY
The emergence of smart technology in outdoor lighting allows for ease of control by the end user. With a one-time installation, consumers are able to control timers, scheduling and ambience all from an app or smart home system, making them an easy all-round choice for outdoor lighting.
Luceco’s Castra Floodlight, part of the Luceco Smart Lighting Range, is a fully controllable, sustainable lighting solution with dimmable lighting, timers, scheduling and group control. It can be controlled through the BG Home app as well as Google, Amazon and Apple home hub speakers.
Utilising intelligent smart meshing that operates using a home Wi-Fi network without any risk of overloading it, wholesalers can ensure the end user of a simple set up with the reassurance of safety and quality. Innovations like this allow wholesalers to offer more while stocking less, providing a better customer experience.
SUSTAINABILITY
Choosing an eco-friendly lighting option that can help save money as well as the planet is becoming increasingly important consideration for installers as well as end users. From LED lighting to solar power, multiple options are available on the market, but few have been designed around installer feedback on their requirements and market demand.
Luceco’s Solar Floodlight range allows for customisable installation, with the solar panel mountable to the light fitting or separately. An 18 hour run time on a full charge of eight to 10 hours can put the consumer’s mind at ease to know their premises are fully lit at night with auto night light settings and an adjustable PIR sensor. This also means the 100 per cent energy savings free LED light in only on when needed, so the battery stays charged in the day and provides full brightness at night.
SECURITY
Adding floodlights to a property is a great way to feel safe and secure at night and gives homeowners a level of reassurance. A consumer may sometimes equate floodlights to industrial stadium lighting, but residential floodlights provide enough power without encroaching on neighbour’s
homes and are also small and discreet so will not be an eyesore on a property.
The Luceco Floodlight Essence represents a leap forward in outdoor lighting technology. Its combination of ease of installation, durability, energy efficient and smart features make it the ideal product to stock for an end user seeking top-tier outdoor security lighting.
The light has a two part installation bracket for easy access quick and simple installation and the groundbreaking patented Fit & Tilt multi-position ball joint allows for easy positioning and unlimited adjustments over time.
Built to withstand the outdoor environment and powered by highefficiency LED chips, the Floodlight Essence is a great option for wholesalers looking to stock a reliable all-round product.
STYLE AND SUBSTANCE
It’s great when you can have a light that is smart, sustainable and secure, but in highly
curated settings like gardens, consumers are looking for something that is also stylish in the daytime.
The Solar Guardian Wall Lights from Luceco are designed for outdoor use with a polycarbonate body but look sleek and modern. Combining solar power technology with security and presence detection mode settings, these lights require no mains power and are available in black and white finishes.
Outdoor lighting can look good and be hard wearing, and wholesalers can provide an option, so consumers do not have to compromise. A product like solar wall lights provide a choice to the consumer that ticks all the boxes of the newest trends, creating a light that will give wholesalers the opportunity for sales growth and stock turn from limited floor space. They also offer great value for money.
With its latest lighting catalogue now out in circulation and new products making their way into the market, Katie Plumstead, Group Marketing Manager, Scolmore Group, puts the spotlight on some of the Ovia commercial floodlights that are proving popular with contractors.

POWER OF THREE
Stuart James, Sales Director at Marlec, delves into three domestic products that are enabling homes to become more eco-friendly and showcase Marlec’s commitment to sustainability, cost savings, and customer satisfaction.
The Solar iBoost+ has become a household name, and for good reason. This innovative device seamlessly integrates with existing or new solar systems to divert surplus energy directly to the hot water tank. This ensures that excess solar-generated power doesn’t go back to the grid and is consumed at the property, saving homeowners money on their energy bills.
The Solar iBoost+ has gained popularity among installers and house builders as it enables homes to become more eco-friendly and complies with Part L regulations. In February 2024, the UK Government announced that energysaving materials and energy storage devices such as Solar iBoost+ are now VAT-exempt when installed, meaning homeowners can enjoy the same tax
benefits as those upgrading their homes to have rooftop solar or heat pumps. Since its launch back in 2015, Solar iBoost+ has been installed in over 150,000 and is now available in most electrical wholesalers. Whether homeowners are out during the day or at home, the iBoost ensures solar energy is utilised efficiently, reducing reliance on the grid and saving them money.
The iBoost+ Buddy in-home display is the trusted companion to the Solar iBoost+ and provides real-time insights into available surplus energy from anywhere in the home. With its eco-gauge and digital readout, homeowners can make informed decisions about when to heat their hot water tank, remotely activate the timed boosts and view the Solar iBoost+ savings.
Shifting gears to EV
The automotive industry is embracing electric vehicles (EVs) as part of a seismic shift towards cleaner transportation. With the Government’s goal of achieving zeroemission vehicles by 2035, more drivers are transitioning to EVs. However, reliable and efficient home EV chargers are essential to support this move. This is where Marlec’s UK-manufactured EV charger Veva comes in. Launched in 2023 and designed with both homeowners and installers in mind, Veva promises simple installation and useability. Its user-friendly
“ Homeowners can use the mobile app to customise their car charging schedules to take advantage of off-peak tariff times.”
mobile app ensures effortless charging, while installers appreciate the built-in PEN protection, easy-to-access terminals, and multipoint cable entry design, which make installation fast and straightforward. Unlike other chargers on the market, Veva has interchangeable fascias, which enable homeowners to match their chargers to their property aesthetics.
Peace of mind comes as standard with the Veva. Homeowners can use the mobile app to customise their car charging schedules to take advantage of off-peak tariff times. If they have solar panels
installed, Veva is solar PV compatible, allowing guilt-free energy use and greener charging options.
Shaping the renewable landscape Marlec have always worked closely with electrical wholesalers, who play a pivotal role in shaping the renewable energy landscape. Solar iBoost+ and Veva offer compelling reasons for you to stock them. Solar iBoost+ diverts excess solar energy to hot water tanks, reducing reliance on the grid, while Veva offers user-friendly and eco-friendly home EV charging.
THERE IS A LIGHT THAT NEVER GOES OUT
Off-grid renewable lighting expert
Rachel Preen, Managing Director of Prolectric, outlines all you need to know about permanent solar lighting.
Heading into summer, the demand for high quality is reliable, solar solutions is set to surge. As the UK transitions towards net zero, more and more electrical wholesalers are extending the breadth of their off-grid product ranges to accommodate the growing industry appetite. We are witnessing the uplift across industry as the sustainability specifiers’ web of influence grows and electricians, contractors and developers take advantage of the opportunity to be part of a highly profitable industry. At the sharp end, this increases the need to provide customers with the right information to make informed and factual decisions.
Solar without sun
As with all new and emerging technologies, a range of misconceptions can sometimes cast a shadow over the effectiveness of solar lighting as a gamechanging technology. One of the most common myths is that solar power is most effective in summer when the sun is out and becomes less efficient during winter. Contrary to this belief, solar panels are designed to work efficiently even in colder, darker climates – and often are more efficient at converting sunlight into electricity when operating at cooler temperatures.
While shorter daylight hours might slightly affect the overall energy generation, advancements in solar technology, such as improved panel efficiency and energy storage systems, have minimised this impact. Prolectric’s solar technology has been engineered to work in the harshest of UK winters, where cloudy days make up 43% of the year.
Even on overcast days solar panels can still capture diffuse sunlight by efficiently converting it into usable energy, allowing customers to effectively harness solar
power in low-light conditions. To date, Prolectric has provided over 8,000 solar streetlights across the UK, brightening up car parks, walkways and streets, round the clock, 365 days a year.
The dark days are over
Solar lighting has come a long way from its early days. Thanks to technological advancements, solar-powered lighting systems are now equipped with highefficiency LED lights and sensors that provide bright and effective lighting. The energy generated from the sun during the day is stored in batteries, allowing them to shine throughout the night. Prolectric’s specially developed smart light controller and Passive Infra-Red (PIR) sensor work to ensure the solar LED light lasts from dusk until dawn, even on dark days, and throughout the UK winter.
Its very latest development in 3 PIR offers a unique solution which now ensures movement is picked up from an even greater distance. Solar lights offer a reliable and eco-friendly solution without compromising on brightness, whether installed in car parks, pathways, campuses or parks. And when used across large commercial properties, operational carbon emissions can be significantly reduced.
Low maintenance solar systems
Solar streetlights and bollards are simple, quick and economical to install. With no manpower required to dig trenches or install trunking for cables, labour costs and carbon footprints are significantly reduced. Installation time is minimal compared to conventional mains power alternatives which minimises the disruption to roads users and the impact on traffic. It can also help to cut down construction project schedules and with reduced contractor presence, onsite safety and security is also enhanced.
Reducing the reliance on grid energy, unlike EV charging units and stations that stretch the grid capacity; solar streetlights and bollards are low maintenance, with no need for PAT testing, and have a long operating life. There is no need to change the whole unit when one element comes to the end of its life; instead the single component can be replaced, again reducing embodied carbon and waste.
Solar systems are often perceived as high-maintenance due to concerns about cleaning panels and maintaining batteries. However, modern solar panels are designed with self-cleaning technology. Battery maintenance is also minimal, with many solar systems featuring smart battery management systems that require little to no manual intervention. Routine checks and occasional cleaning are usually sufficient to keep a solar system running smoothly year-round.
Delivering change
When it comes to solar lighting, both temporary and permanent solutions, Prolectric has been championing quieter, safer and more environmentally friendly sites since 2011, as the first to introduce solar street lighting to the UK. This gamechanging solar technology provides a practical way for businesses to achieve their carbon-reduction commitments, enabling them to move away from fossilfuelled or mains powered systems.
Prolectric solar lighting and hybrid generators provide high-performance temporary and permanent site lighting and power - with minimal environmental impact and low running costs. In particular, these lighting systems produce no carbon, no noise, need little maintenance, and require no fuel. As the demands on the UK electrical grid become greater and the need to reduce carbon emissions becomes increasingly important, solar lighting has the potential to deliver real change.
In close, we don’t want to wish the Great British summertime away, but when the sun starts to fade, the nights draw in and summer feels like a very distant memory –you can be safe in the knowledge that yearround solar power and lighting is a feasible, practical and reliable option, contributing to a cleaner and more sustainable future.

There will also be a smaller range of 15W and 12W sockets in the White Moulded and Nexus Metal finishes for those who do not require fast charging and are working to a lower budget.
Smart charging functionality in these sockets allows for safe and efficient charging of devices, using variable fast technology to protect and prolong battery life by only providing the power a device needs. Once a device is fully charged, the socket will go into standby mode, saving costs on unnecessary power and preventing long term damage to batteries.
This more sustainable charging solution is a great option for consumers who have limited space near sockets or prefer a more minimalist look. The integrated ports reduce the need for additional three-pin plug adaptors or extension leads and as such, reduces electrical waste for the environmentally conscious. TO FIND
LUCECO EV WALL CHARGER
With more people choosing to switch to an electric car, consumers are demanding efficient ways to charge their vehicles at home. Installing an EV wall charger, such as the BG Sync EV Wall Charger 2, now with integrated solar charging, from Luceco – is proving both a popular and money saving solution for consumers as well as a great upsell and customer lock-in opportunity for installers. Savvy wholesalers should prepare to meet demand.
Ingeniously, thanks to the intuitive smartphone app, homeowners can cut their home-based EV charging costs with the Sync EV Wall Charger 2. By utilising surplus solar energy from their existing solar panels – with no modifications to panels required – instead of having any surplus directed back to the grid, homeowners can potentially charge their electric vehicles for free with Sync EV.
In addition, with personalised settings such as scheduled charging and optimised cut-off points, allowing users to charge dynamically and maximise cheap rates of electricity, the Sync EV Wall Charger 2 delivers a faster home charge compared to plugging a charging cable directly into a three pin socket which gives a very slow charge at a fixed rate –both inconvenient and less cost effective.
Designed with sleek aesthetics, and no compromise on practicalities, the Sync EV Wall Charger 2 is available in two versions – tethered and untethered –to suit individual needs. The tethered option, which comes with an integral 7.5m fixed wraparound cable that is fitted with a very userfriendly charging gun for attaching to the vehicle, provides a neat, tidy and safe solution. And, since the charger uses personalised settings, your customers can rest-assured that they are completely in control of who uses their charger – no rogue charges are possible. The untethered version, ideal for those who already own cables, is completely unpluggable, providing flexibility when using commercial chargers away from home.

KNIGHTSBRIDGE LED DOWNLIGHT
The new SpektroLED EVO downlight from Knightsbridge is an advanced evolution of the company’s hugely popular and innovative SpektroLED.
Building on the versatility and flexibility of its predecessor, EVO offers selectable wattages, colour temperatures and six interchangeable bezel finishes and comes in three versions: fixed, tilt and smart.
represented a huge leap forward in versatility and choice for lighting projects; offering unparallelled choice in performance, and style in one package, doing away with the need to specify multiple LED lamp types. Expanding these permutations of wattage, colour temperature and bezel choice, the ultra-low profile SpektroLED EVO Fixed, Tilt and Smart offers a 108-downlights-in-one range solution.
Depending on the required illumination, either 5W (up to 465 lumens) or 7W (up to 795 lumens) can be pre-selected via a switch on the lamp body. Once chosen, there are four CCTs available – 2700K, 3000K, 4000K and 6000K – the desired colour temperature also selected by a sliding switch. The LED beam angle is 60°and the tilt variant can be adjusted to 90˚ as required.
Further customisation is then possible through the bezel options that allow the lamp to complement or contrast with a room’s décor or colourways.

David Barnes, Marketing Manager at KNIPEX, explains how the GEOMAR Helmholtz Centre for Ocean Research in Kiel, Germany, is using KNIPEX tools to help develop some of the world’s most state-of-the-art underwater vehicles.
Submarine films, deep-sea horrors and documentaries about journeys to the wreck of the Titanic – people have always had a fascination with the underwater world. We've just visited a place where these dive boats are designed and developed. Also on board: pliers from KNIPEX!
Hostile environment
It's dark, cold and thoroughly inhospitable down there in the depths. The ocean floor, located at 11,000m at its deepest point in the Mariana Trench, holds many secrets and provides ocean researchers around the world with mysteries they want to solve. And even if a dive does not always have to go down quite so far, from a certain depth it’s preferable to send remote-controlled
robots instead of human divers. The GEOMAR Helmholtz Centre for Ocean Research in Kiel continuously develops and builds these underwater vehicles, and today we are getting a very exclusive look into the room where these dive boats are made.
Prototypes for diving operations
The Technical Manager of the technology and logistics department, Ralf Schwarz could tell an exciting story about every single machine and every underwater vehicle temporarily stowed to dry off. He first shows us the workshops housing modern CNC milling, sawing and drilling machines. This is where prototypes are built, tested, improved and repaired for the hard work ahead.
The first KNIPEX pliers we see lying on the tables look almost like they are put out on display – but no, high-quality tools are essential prerequisites for precise work. The selection and interplay of materials is especially important here, because, just like in space, the environmental conditions in the deep sea are extreme. The research that goes into them to gain new insights into the world above water, too, requires robust, sophisticated solutions.
A crawler for the seabed
Behind the gates of the large bright hall, we first see the yellow deep-sea crawler Viator, which the Helmholtz Centre for Ocean Research has developed in conjunction with space and deep-sea experts from 16 German partner institutes. The Viator had its first deep-sea mission in 2017 in the Arctic on the research icebreaker Polarstern. The unmanned crawler autonomously explores the bottom of the sea from its Mansio docking station at depths inaccessible to people.
Manned to a depth of 400m
Those who have seen deep-sea horror films like "The Abyss" in the late 80s will get goose bumps when they see the submersible Jago. It is unique in Germany and allows two scientists to view the seabed down to a depth of 400m in person. The submersible can manoeuvre freely under water and has a gripper arm for taking samples. "You can see much more clearly and completely differently underwater with your own eyes than with an HD camera," says Ralf Schwarz.
Extreme conditions
GEOMAR also has solutions for much deeper areas of the ocean. The remote-controlled, unmanned deep-sea diving robot ROV POCA (goes down to depths of 3,000m) and its "big brother" ROV KIEL 6000 (goes down to depths of 6,000m), like the Jago, can be launched from the research vessel using large cranes at the stern but remain connected to the ship via a steel winch. After every use under the toughest, extreme conditions, the underwater vehicles are inspected, repaired and
“ When the priority is the proper functioning of expensive research technology, especially in manned dive trips, you will see high-quality tools nearby.”
improved in the workshop while scientists analyse the research results and collected samples.
No half measures
When the priority is the proper functioning of expensive research technology, especially in manned dive trips, you will see high-quality tools nearby. The GEOMAR Helmholtz Centre for Ocean Research does not take any half measures when it comes to tools. In addition to many other high-quality brands, we find many KNIPEX pliers on the work desks and in the drawers of the carts which are used here every day.
No compromises are made here in the deep sea or above water. From the heavy pipe wrench for large threads to the slender diagonal cutters for the machining of circuit boards and soldered joints, you will find half of our product range all spread out here at the workstations.
Quality for surviving
It feels like you're in the middle of an adventure even here on land. The orange, dry-hung survival suits give you an idea of how hard the work can be out there in extreme temperatures and weather conditions. Between the big cranes, the heavy carabiners and clamps and the steel cables on big winches, we feel a sense of adventure among all this research equipment. It's a good thing that there is a commitment to quality here on land, too. Here's hoping the next journey into inhospitable, remote corners of the planet will be another success story and will bring us new important information about our world.
