FRESH FROM THE WEST
Arriving from North America, FASTFOILS recently held its first launch event in London to teach colourists from all over the UK how to save time and increase profitability with colour services. Hosted by Founder, Ben Barkworth, and Director of Education, J Ladner, the product demonstration day was held in Central London’s iconic Electric Space.
NEW HEADS FOR HEADMASTERS
The Headmasters Salon Group has announced the appointment of four new directors to its board. As of April 2024, Jo Wickenden, Laura Geary, Simon Barlow and Sophie Hill have joined the board of directors and taken on the day-to-day responsibilities of running the 54-salon group.
A STAR IS BORN
Having attracted over 500 entries from hairdressing and barbering students across the UK, Denman has officially announced the winner of its very first College StarCompetition.With a prize of £1000 plus a £200 tool bundle for the college hairdressing department, the online competition asked students to enter a series of images of a singular blow-dry. Denman is delighted to announce that Yasmin Ainsley of East Durham College is the very first College Star and winner of Denman’s Big Blow Out Competition 2024.
DIVIDE AND CONQUER!
Phenix Salon Suites, a flexible workplace for hair and beauty professionals, is set to open its third and fourth UK sites in the heart of Nottingham and Liverpool city centres, following a £2.4m investment between the two. The 4,747 sq ft space located in Flying Horse Walk, Nottingham’s boutique retail shopping centre, features 25 suites, while the 6,500 sq ft space located in Liverpool’s Corn Exchange Building will feature 34 units.

WHAT HAS BEEN YOUR BIGGEST CAREER CHALLENGE OR ‘FAILURE’ SO FAR… IN OTHER WORDS, WHAT’S BEEN YOUR BIGGEST MISTAKE?
This subject of failure and mistakes is interesting for me because I kind of move on from things quite fast. I’m a glass half full person – even if something is going wrong, I usually put a positive spin on things. There have obviously been situations – like when I’ve shot a collection or done a show – that haven’t gone the way I thought they were going to go. I’m sure we’ve all had times where this glorious material (hair) doesn’t do what you want it to do! But for me, it’s about not being too stuck in what your original idea actually was; it’s about finding a different route out.
WOULD YOU AGREE THAT MISTAKES ARE ACTUALLY LESSONS, THEN?
Yes, and I think mistakes are vital. As an industry, we can put way too much pressure on ourselves. I would say I’ve absolutely had a lot of failures, but more from myself not being super happy with what I’ve done. From a business point of view, if you make a decision and think about it when you’re at home in bed, it means you’ve made the wrong decision.
That’s a really big one for me. If I’ve said something and it’s not quite sitting right, I find a way to rectify it because then it’s not a failure or mistake, it’s actually something you’ve learned from.
WE’RE ONLY HUMAN! ALL THOSE OF US THAT HAVE HAD FUN, SUCCESSFUL CAREERS HAVE MADE SO MANY MISTAKES ALONG THE WAY – I THINK IT’S ALL PART OF IT. Exactly, I think you have to be adaptable to stay in this industry a long time, and when situations change, you have to be ready to change too. When we had to close Sicilian Avenue, that could have been a negative. The builder came in and said, “We’re redeveloping, you’ve been here 22 years and you have to leave.” My reaction could have been, “Oh my God, what are we going to do!” but you have to put a positive spin on things. So, when we told the team, we communicated it like it was such exciting, great news.
IF YOU COULD START ALL OVER AGAIN THOUGH, WHAT WOULD YOU DO DIFFERENTLY?
Um, there’s probably loads of things I would do
differently, but would they have been the right thing? I don’t know. I’m a great believer in just putting your head down, working hard, doing the best you can and somehow finding the right route for you. I would say one of the biggest positives for me is that I’ve always had Jamie as my backbone, so even when plans are changing, he’s always gone along with some of my completely bonkers ideas. And he has my back. One of the things Jamie and I have never done is plan too far in advance. We’ve basically run the business on the team we’ve had around us, and sometimes the team has taken us in a different direction – and often, that direction has been way more creative or successful than we could have imagined!
HOW DOES SOMEONE CREATE SUCCESS IN THEIR CAREER?
I think it’s about having integrity to your craft. In our generation, we have the most amazing, incredible group of people around us, and we’re all very good friends and very respectful of each other. To just try and keep up with the incredible people around you is motivational in itself.
WHEN WAS THE LAST TIME YOU DOUBTED YOURSELF AND HOW DO YOU OVERCOME THOSE FEELINGS?
I don’t think there’s anybody that doesn’t doubt themselves; I think you just have to learn how to deal with it. The biggest one for me was probably being nominated for British Hairdresser of the Year, mainly because everybody had an opinion on my pictures without knowing me. There’s always more to things that people do creatively behind-the-scenes than what you see as the end result. You’re putting yourself out there, and I really, really like to take that as a challenge and approach what I do completely differently each time. That’s what keeps me alive.
ARE YOU A PERSON WHO TAKES RISKS?
Dangerously so sometimes, I think (laughs). Do I do things that are going to challenge what people think? Yes.
ARE YOU MORE RISK AVERSE THE OLDER YOU’VE BECOME OR ARE YOU STILL AS HUNGRY TO SUCCEED?
What I am now is more picky about what I say yes to; if something isn’t interesting or challenging or exciting, I’m much more averse to saying yes to it. But that’s not about risk-taking, that’s because I find lots of things quite dull. Being around people who are inspiring and motivational excites me.
SUCCESS IS OBVIOUSLY DIFFERENT FOR EVERYONE, BUT WHAT DOES IT LOOK LIKE TO YOU?
It’s so many different things. I think to stay at the top of your game and have a successful career, you’ve got to love it. Hairdressing takes you on a journey through different stages of your life, and I feel so successful to have had such a long career in the industry. Whilst it’s not money motivated or money focused, success is also about paying off a mortgage and not having financial commitments when you get older. Time becomes more precious, you know. My family’s really important to me, and I don’t like that I don’t spend enough time with my parents as they’re getting older.
WHO IS A SUCCESSFUL PERSON YOU ADMIRE?
Too many to mention! When you look through the family tree of hairdressing, there are so many that have led the way. There are so many beautiful cutters that still hold the scissors with such passion. I mean, Anthony Mascolo, for example, you can’t even go there with what he did! Sometimes, I don’t think that the generation below realise that these people didn’t just open the doors, they built them.
DO YOU HAVE ANY DAILY HABITS OR A PARTICULAR MINDSET THAT YOU THINK MAKES YOU SUCCESSFUL?
Hard work.Growing up, my dad would say to me things like, “This Sunday you’re not going out to play, you’re moving a brick wall!” His work ethic and his way of treating people is phenomenal. He had a philosophy of helping people out, and I’m really happy I grew up with that. There are so many people we have taken on as apprentices that have gone on to do such amazing things, and these are people I can call on even now. I find this idea of care and compassion beautiful.
I AGREE. WHEN I WALK AROUND MY LITTLE TOWN – SALISBURY IS TINY –THERE’S PROBABLY 25 SALONS, OF WHICH 15 OF THEM ARE FROM PEOPLE THAT HAVE WORKED WITH US OVER THE YEARS. I AM REALLY PROUD OF EVERY SINGLE ONE OF THEM – I GET A BUZZ OFF SEEING THEM WITH THEIR OWN SHOP! I DON’T REALLY TELL MANY PEOPLE THAT ACTUALLY I DO ENJOY THAT PROUD FEELING AN AWFUL LOT. FINAL QUESTION, SALLY. WHAT THREE PIECES OF ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE TO ANYONE AT THE START OF THEIR CAREER?
1.Say yes, instead of no.
2.Surround yourself with positive people and try not to listen to negativity.

With equality, diversity and inclusivity high on his agenda, we want to find out what it takes to achieve a truly inclusive salon. In his exclusive series, Errol interviews hair industry heroes about their stance on inclusivity.

Hi SANDRA, THANKS FOR CHATTiNG TO ME TODAY. WHAT DOES THE TERM iNCLUSiViTY MEAN TO YOU?
I’m an all-rounder, so inclusivity for me is an ability to do every type of hair. I started off my career solely doing European hair, mainly because there were no textured hair courses or anything like that on offer. So, I went to work in a salon that would give me that exposure and broad range of skills. I think that as a hairdresser your skill should be for everybody, regardless of your ethnicity or your hair type. You should be available for everybody.
IS THERE ENOUGH OF A SPOTLiGHT ON THESE CONVERSATiONS iN THE HAiRDRESSiNG iNDUSTRY?
Not as much as there should be. It was encouraging a few years ago when Afro hair
was made mandatory on the hairdressing curriculum. As somebody who’s actually worked in colleges teaching, I’m glad that it finally stopped being ignored. I think that a lot of hairdressers were previously scared and shielded away from Afro hair, so they never really mastered how to do it. Having more awareness and education has definitely helped to make people embrace it more – social media helps carry that message along as well.
DO YOU CONSiDER YOURSELF A ‘TEXTURED HAiR SPECiALiST’? IS THAT A LABEL YOU EMBRACE?
I don’t mind people using that phrase because it helps clients gravitate towards you; it helps them realise you specialise in a certain hair type or texture when they’re out there searching for particular stylists. But yes, I am definitely an all-rounder. I’m not specific to one hair type and it certainly doesn’t define who I am.
WHO WERE YOUR ROLE MODELS WHEN ADVANCiNG THROUGH THE HAiR iNDUSTRY AND WHO ARE THE PEOPLE PROJECTiNG THE RiGHT KiND OF MESSAGES ABOUT iNCLUSiViTY NOW?
I’m old school, I’ve been in the game a long time, but it was actually you, Errol, as well as Terry Jacques and Thérèse Haynes from Pacific Hair Artists, who all really encouraged me to move to London and start my career in hairdressing. Jacqui McIntosh at Avlon is another incredible textured hair educator. She comes from the scientific, technical side of things – which I really admire – so she has been my mentor. Michelle Sultan is another woman in the hairdressing field who is doing
great stuff. I actually trained her as my assistant, so it makes me so proud to see her doing these amazing things 20 years later.
HOW MUCH OF A PART DOES EDUCATiON PLAY iN THE QUEST FOR iNCLUSiViTY?
Education has always been my passion. My whole career has been devoted to spreading my technical knowledge and experience, so education is of the utmost importance for me. The inclusion of Afro hair in the curriculum in colleges and the fact that lots of product brands are running separate courses now on various hair types and teaching the way different textures react to different chemicals is such a positive shift. To me, all of those things are absolutely fantastic.
WHAT CAN SALONS DO TO OFFER A TRULY DiVERSE AND iNCLUSiVE SERViCE? DOES THE RESPONSiBiLiTY LiE WiTH SALON OWNERS?
It’s all too easy to blame the salon owner! We must remember that a salon is always a team thing, and you’re only as good as your most junior team member. It’s about sending your team on courses to keep them motivated and encouraging them to go to all the shows and presentations. Remember, the landscape is always changing and you have to keep abreast of what’s happening – don’t ever just stay in your little bubble, it doesn’t work like that. I’ve always had that thing where people go, ‘Oh, you do Afro hair’ or ‘You do European hair’, but I have to remind people that, structurally, hair is all the same. Hair is just different curl types and textures –some need moisture, some need more treatments. As a salon owner, remind your team to look at it from that perspective.
WHAT DOES ‘NORMAL’ HAiR MEAN THESE DAYS? WOULD YOU AGREE THAT iT’S AN OUTDATED TERM?
I don’t think it’s a phrase that’s going to go away anytime soon, but it does feel outdated defining something as normal. It’s like saying what’s a normal person? We’re all different, we’re all diverse and we’ve all got little glitches and fun things about us – that’s what makes us individuals!
ARE PRODUCT COMPANiES DOiNG ENOUGH iN THE ADVANCEMENT OF iNCLUSiViTY?
I think product companies have been doing a great job over the past five years or so. Their marketing has definitely improved and the images that they’re putting out there are becoming more diverse – this is so important because they are the ones who are the driving force. Because there is now so much competition from independents or even celebrities that want to bring out their own branded products, product companies have to stay a step ahead. Overall, I’d say that, right now, the big brands are pulling it together and bringing out some great products that cater for all hair types and textures.
WHAT’S THE BEST TECHNiCAL TiP YOU COULD GiVE ANYONE REGARDiNG TYPE 4C HAiR?
The number one rule is that this type of hair needs moisture. I would always recommend a good moisturising shampoo and conditioner, preferably one that’s sulphate-free because we all know that this is hugely drying to the hair. I’m actually a big fan of steam treatments too – these can impart a lot more moisture. Finally, a lot of clients that come in with curly hair only blow it out or straighten it once a year, and then they’ve got like inch-long split ends because it hasn’t been trimmed in so long! Regular trims are just as essential for curly hair, even if it’s not as easy to see the damage.

WHAT iS THE ONE THiNG EVERY HAiRDRESSER SHOULD DO TO EDUCATE THEMSELVES ON TEXTURED HAiR?
Go on courses, embrace new products that are coming out and test them out on clients or friends. There are plenty of product companies that will come into your business and do an educational day for your team. Also, get yourself a good network of fellow hairdressers. Sit down with them, see what products they’re using, watch their techniques. I’ve got some great friends in the industry and it’s all about sharing knowledge. Other salons aren’t your rivals, they’re your friends.

For this look, my priority was to create something completely eye-catching. I wanted to make a colour full of warmth and boldness, specifically using placement to work cleverly alongside the light reflection. Using Joico, we went in for 5NRG 10vol on the roots with a 7cc on the midlengths and ends. We then glossed Joico Blonde Life Highlights with 6ccr Demi Liquid.

Over the last year, Pro Hair has been shadowing award-winning colour expert and international educator, Carolyn Newman, through her exclusive mentorship programme – Be Your Best. Life, business and wellness coach, Sonia Magnier, is calling for wellness practices to be integrated into salon education. In the same way we value cutting, colouring and styling education, she believes salons and stylists simply can’t run without wellness training.
“The most common issues I see when working with salons are general stress, overwhelmed stylists and physical health challenges. Salons are often fast-paced environments, and dealing with a lot of emotions, energies and personalities can be particularly difficult.
Cocktail that with no lunch breaks, late nights and a lack of boundaries, and you’ve got a recipe for disaster. Yet these structures seem to be all too common in our salon businesses, with our managers and owners without the tools they need to stop or change it.

Meditation to de-stress: Get rid of preconceived notions about what meditation is and focus on the benefits, one of which is to be present.

With 97% of consumers now heading to reviews before they make any booking decisions, salon reviews are one of the single most important sales tools to attract both new and existing customers.
Picture this: You’re shopping for a new television and you’ve found three that you like based on the pictures alone. The first has over 700 reviews with an average rating of 4.8-stars, the second has 80 reviews and a 4-star rating and the third has no reviews. Which do you buy? It’s a no-brainer, right?
Here are my tips for maximising your salon’s online reviews:
● Consistently collect reviews from your everyday clients. This is the secret source for both gaining new customers and retaining your existing ones.
● Ensure your reviews are topped up regularly. Consumers are only interested in reviews from the last few weeks.
● Consider your different audiences and where they will search. Some consumers will only look at Google reviews, some will look on listing sites and some will look on your website – make sure you’ve got all bases covered.
● Regularly share reviews with your team. Reviews will motivate your team like nothing else, and everyone likes to know they’re doing a good job.
● Make reviews accessible and easy to find. ‘Social proof’ is reassurance consumers take from reading about other people having positive experiences.

Maintain Boundaries:
In the hair industry, social media is awash with characters lip-syncing to trending sounds or doing something “funny” to get the views. However, it’s important to realise that you can build your online brand whilst still maintaining boundaries. Instead of always featuring in your own content, try using B-roll content – this could be unboxing deliveries, travelling to the salon or shots of local businesses you support in your area. Try to not give 100% of yourself to social media, save some for your friends and your family.
So, whilst content creator burnout isn’t something we can get rid of completely in our industry, there are definitely ways we can soothe it. I hope these strategies can unload some of the stresses out of your daily life. To quote the OG Momager, Kris Jenner, ‘You’re doing great sweetie.’

THE EFFECT OF VICES ON THE HAIR
We all know the obvious consequences of alcohol, smoking and too much sugar, but what impact do these have on your clients’ hair health? In the final part of our series with Nioxin ambassador and globally recognised trichologist, Mark Blake (MIT WTS IAT), we explore the effects some vices have on the hair and scalp.
Vaping is not as bad for the hair as smoking, but the jury is still out. There is no direct evidence that vaping causes hair loss as no studies have been officially completed yet, but many of the ingredients in cigarettes are also found in vapes, alerting us to possible dangers.
When you vape, you may inhale up to 15 milligrams of Nicotine – this greatly reduces the blood supply to your follicles, with your blood vessels constricting every time Nicotine is inhaled. Hair follicles need a strong blood supply to enable hair growth, and we lose hair permanently when the blood vessels shrink to the dermal papilla (where hair is made in the scalp).
Alcohol overall is good for the hair, particularly red wine, but only when drunk in small quantities. Resveratrol in red wine has anti-apoptotic properties (this helps stop cells dying), helping to boost hair by fighting oxidative stress and promoting hair cell regeneration.
Red wine may also help with dry scalps, as it is a rich source of bioflavonoid, which promotes keratin growth. Drinking Stout or Guinness is also a great way to boost your Iron and Vitamin B levels.
Cannabis is not good for the hair. It contributes to a weakened immune system, results in respiratory effects and irritates the lungs and bronchial passages. On the other hand, however, the dopamine release does trigger feelings of euphoria, which is actually good for hair.
Sugar is the enemy for hair. Studies have shown that there is a potential link between sugary drinks and the detrimental effect it can have on male hair loss. Men can lose their hair for a variety of reasons, but sugary drinks – which are particularly popular with the younger generation – can speed up this process.
Dark chocolate is good for the hair. Flavanols in cocoa work similarly to blood pressure-lowering drugs called ACE inhibitors. Dark chocolate makes you feel good due to the release of serotonin and endorphins, which is great for hair.
And finally... Sex is actually great for the hair, particularly at night-time because this is when the body repairs itself. Great hair is intrinsically linked to oestrogen levels, which is something females lack as they approach their Menopause. Sex helps these levels to rise. Hurrah!

PROTECT EXTENSIONS FROM UV RAYS
Just like skin, hair extensions can suffer damage from prolonged exposure to UV rays. Either use a leave-in conditioner to shield your extensions, or wear a hat or scarf for extra protection.
DON’T OVEREXPOSE EXTENSIONS TO CHLORINE AND SALTWATER. Chlorine and saltwater can be harsh on extensions, causing dryness, colour fading and tangling. Before swimming, wet your hair and apply a leave-in conditioner or hair oil. After swimming, rinse your hair thoroughly with fresh water to remove any chlorine or salt residue.
BRUSH EXTENSIONS REGULARLY. Use a soft-bristle brush designed for extensions such as the Gold Class Gold Styling Brush to detangle your hair gently. Start from the ends and work your way up to the roots to avoid pulling or tugging, especially when dealing with knotty hair after swimming.
GIVE HAIR A BREAK FROM HOT TOOLS
Summer is the perfect time to leave hair to dry naturally. If you must use heated styling tools, always apply a heat protectant spray beforehand.
MOISTURISE AND HYDRATE EXTENSIONS
NEVER SLEEP WITH WET HAIR EXTENSIONS
Sleeping with wet hair extensions can cause tangling and matting, leading to breakage. When it’s dry, consider braiding your hair or tying it up loosely to prevent tangling while you sleep.
Keep your extensions hydrated and nourished by regularly applying a lightweight hair oil or serum, focusing on the mid-lengths and ends. Avoid products containing alcohol, as these can strip the hair of moisture and lead to frizz.

● Create a festival styling menu to name and frame the styles your clients can go for. Ensure all of your team are well-versed in these looks and able to create them.
● Don’t be afraid to experiment and try different styles. Festival season is a chance to express individuality and have some fun!

For me, I love to pair these colours with mermaid-like waves for festivals, styling the look with a crimper or heated styling iron to create ‘s’ shaped waves in the hair.

STEP 1: Prep and detangle the hair from root to ends with a Denman D38 Paddle Detangler. Brush through a little dry shampoo for extra grit and hold.
STEP 2: Using a Denman DPC1 Pintail Comb, section the hair through the centre into two equal sections. Coil the hair into a bun above the ear to keep it away.
STEP 3: Using a classic three-strand French braid technique, begin braiding at the front of the hairline. Take narrow strands and add more hair to widen the braid as you work diagonally from the hairline.
STEP 4: Progress back behind the ear and down the nape, braiding to the end. Repeat for the opposite side.
GET THE FESTIVAL LOOK WITH DENMAN
STEP 5: Using the Denman DPC1 Pintail Comb, gently tease out small sections of hair to widen the plait. This will give the whole look a more ethereal but edgy finish.
STEP 6: Using the pintail comb, backcomb the ends of the hair to emphasise the texture.
STEP 7: To further ‘distress’ the finish on the braids, brush over each section with a Denman D82M Finisher boar bristle brush. Play around with the silhouette until you are satisfied.

This year, I’m definitely being asked for a lot more hair up than I’ve ever seen, which I love! Personally, I prefer hair up for the wedding day because I just know it’s guaranteed to stay in place, regardless of the weather.
I always start from a baseline traditional look. When you start with a classic style, you can personalise it exactly to suit the bride. If you ask me, you can’t go wrong beginning with a beautiful classic and giving it a modern twist. Whilst loosening any look a little bit at the ends seems to make everything feel slightly more modern, adding plaits, twists or more of a loose curl, equally keeps things looking contemporary.

After that, it’s just about softening it up at the end to make the style feel younger, fresher and more individual.

This year, it’s all about soft, pretty updos when it comes to bridal hair. Clients are looking for delicate, romantic buns that look effortlessly beautiful. 1. PICTURES OVER WORDS: Before we book any bridal appointments, we always start with aconsultation. We request that any bride-to-be brings along multiple inspiration pictures so there’s a really clear understanding from theget-go about what they’re looking to achieve.
2. IT’S ALL IN THE TRIAL: It goes without saying that a trial is essential. I recommend scheduling this for at least four weeks before the big day to see the bride’s hair texture in person and to test out how it will hold certain styling options throughout the day. At this stage, we would also discuss extensions for any additional length or thickness – remember, it’s not always
about long hair, some of the best updos or shorter bridal styles include extensions too.
3. TAKE LOTS OF PICTURES: In the trial session, we always take lots of pictures. We usuallyrecommend that the hairstyle is slightly ‘bigger’ than usual to compensate for how it’ll photograph – hair often photographs very flat! This can either be achieved with hair extensions or through adding invisible padding.
4. PREP, PREP, PREP: When it comes to creating the look on the big day, prepping the hairproperly is an absolute must! Using professional-quality products are simply non-negotiable.

The races are all about elegance and sophistication, with ladies typically attending in beautiful outfits and fabulous hats. Simplicity is key, so it’s best to opt for classic hairstyles that will stay in place all day and will work with a hat or fascinator. Updos like chignons, French twists and sleek buns are perfect styles for those with longer hair to wear with a hat.
The perfect race day updo will have the most hold with second or third-day hair, as this has more texture and grip. For a sleek bun, opt for a netted donut that will create the perfect rounded shape, or create a more relaxed shape by wrapping the hair around the base of the ponytail.
WIMBLEDON
For any clients attending the famed tennis tournament this year, it’s important to factor in practicality when styling their hair before the event. British summer weather is incredibly unpredictable, so you need to ensure the hair will last regardless.
A relaxed ponytail is a great choice that will keep the hair out of the face if there is a breeze, but will also keep clients cool in warmer temperatures. When pulling the hair back into a low ponytail, it’s important to leave enough volume at the top of the crown before tying the hair with an elastic. For an extra touch of glamour, the hair tie can be covered with a decorative clip.

The Regatta calls for elegant and chic hairstyles to match the staple summer occasion. This is the event that allows the most flexibility with hairstyling, as updos, low-maintenance styles and relaxed waves are all suitable.
Advise clients that their decision is best influenced by weather conditions, as the riverside can be breezy and summer rain showers are not uncommon. Hot weather calls for an updo to keep the hair out of the face and off the neck, but for those with shorter hair that can’t be tied up, a half-up-half-down style will look beautiful and help clients keep cool. These styles will be equally suitable for a windy rowing day by the river too.

Dear Lacey, how can I be more sustainable as a freelance stylist? I already use biodegradable towels and make weekly trips to the tip to dispose of any waste and recycling, but I still feel like I should be doing more to offset my travel emissions and adapt my hairdressing practices?

Hi Rianna. Firstly, well done for consciously thinking about your impact and for choosing the sustainable alternatives you are already doing – it’s a great place to be! The exciting news is there are lots of simple and interesting ways we can be more sustainable (me included!) and I love getting to talk about this with people in your position.
My first suggestion is to do a carbon footprint analysis of your business to assess your travel and identify the most common modes of transport you use. Once you have these facts (these can be generated easily from an online tool such as greenly.earth), you should see if and where you can make any changes – for example, can you opt for public transport or electric modes of transport instead? Small tweaks like this can really make a massive impact on your footprint. You can also then make steps to offset this carbon footprint by contributing to something that gives back to the environment. Offset ideas include working with a company or charity that plants trees, for example.
or box the waste up for a local waste management company.
Picking products that tick those sustainable goals will help you to achieve a more sustainable business model – this can be from the ingredients they use to the packaging or delivery of the products. Other changes could involve using reusable gloves, which can be washed and last for a long time, or using colour capes to reduce your plastic impact. Investing in biodegradable bin bags and storing everything in either recycled or biodegradable bags and boxes will also help hugely.

The next step is putting on your investigator hat and considering the impacts across every detail of your business. It’s great that you are already using biodegradable towels, but now you should look at the way you are disposing of them. Consider working with a company such as Green Salon Collective or reusing the towels by washing them, and then leaving them to dry naturally. Instead of taking items to a local tip, you could take them to be composted
Another way of managing waste is to repurpose cut hair, which can be put into plant pots to provide high levels of nutrients for plants. You could even gift your green-fingered clients their own cut hair as part of your sustainable service! This is a small way of educating clients about sustainability by doing something practical and helpful with hair waste.
As a session or freelance stylist, I recommend sectioning out your waste as follows: 1. Metals and foils 2. Towels 3. Hair clippings. This will ensure that more can be done to recycle, reuse and ultimately avoid more waste.
My last tip is building in a green fee as part of your charges. The idea of this is to help cover the cost of using sustainable waste systems by allocating a certain percentage of your pricing for your carbon offsetting.

Embarking on a career as a self-employed hairstylist gives you the opportunity to smash the glass ceiling when it comes to your earning potential. This freedom and flexibility that comes with choosing your working patterns is both exciting and empowering. Often, however, when it comes to setting your wage, many hairstylists may find themselves at a loss… It’s often the case that our excitement can be so strong we

actually forget to assess the business or financial elements of being freelance. Instead, we just focus on getting booked up as quickly as possible and assume that prices, overheads and wages will naturally be covered.
Unfortunately, however, that’s not how successful freelancing businesses work. As I’ve said before, the best practise is to tackle the numbers head on; do not ignore your pricing as it will not fix itself.
Most freelancers make the same rookie mistake (yes, me included), and price themselves based on other local salons and not on their own numbers. They’ll usually make it to the end of the first tax year, just to complete their books and find out they’ve priced for £8.50 an hour. This is what prompts us to finally sit and look at the numbers.
If this is you right now – or if you’re about to take the plunge into freelancing – then fear not! I have put together a comprehensive guide to help you navigate the labyrinth of money matters and figure out exactly how to determine your wage. Lets go!
1You need to understand how much it currently costs you to live. This involves getting a total monthly figure for all your personal outgoings. Things like rent, car insurance, utilities, memberships, food, fuel, clothes, savings, investments and how much disposable income you’d like. Times this figure by 12 (months of the year), and you now have your annual target salary.

Now add the dreaded tax. You really need to consider and factor in the tax that you’re going to have to pay on these earnings. The current tax rates are 20% for £50,000 or less and 40% from £50,000 to £125,000.

National Insurance. This is another cost that you will need to consider. Again, it sits on a sliding scale that depends on your profits.
4 Your skill and your value. Aside from making a wage that will cover your living costs and help you reach your financial goals, your skill level is also worth paying for. Whilst it can be difficult to assess where your skill level is in comparison to the rest of the market or your peers, try not to be put off. I like to call this ‘talent tax’.
At the end of the day, I’m a big believer that you’ll get back from the world what you have the courage to ask for. There are (and will always be!) cheaper stylists and more expensive ones. People at the beginning of their career will usually always cost less than people who have 10-15 years’ experience – this is normal for any industry.
Ultimately, to find your wage, you should start with knowing how much you NEED to earn. From there, you can have a goal to aim for that incorporates your ‘talent tax’. Be intentional about your goal, your life, your vision and your business. This is how the money will come. Stop winging it and start calculating it!

I’ve worked with these two beauties a fair bit over the years and it’s always so fun – they are full of energy and I think that’s reflected perfectly in the video campaign!

This month, I spent another few days at the Keune HQ to record some content for their social channels. I also got to visit the laboratory and was shown how the products were made, which honestly blows my mind every time I’m there! As a global ambassador and salon owner, it’s so incredible to be able to see the hard work that goes into the product development.
I could only take a shot of the backstage hair and make-up area, and I can’t really say an awful lot, but there is something very exciting happening in September… I can’t wait to show you all in Booked that month!

Dubbed the ‘Andy Warhol Factory’ of the hair industry, Ashleigh Hodges takes us around her new sustainable haven for creative professionals.
HOW DID YOU DECIDE ON THE STYLE OF YOUR INTERIOR?
I had three goals when creating the space: 1. To have a calm environment for freelancers to work in; 2. To be a multi-functional creative space; 3. To be my own hair home when I’m London based. It was these three main elements that directed my style decisions. I also wanted the space to be as sustainable as I could physically make it, which also had a huge impact on the style of the interior.
WHERE DID YOU FIND THE INSPIRATION FOR YOUR DESIGN?
I love and feel most calm in art galleries and libraries, so we took a lot of inspiration from spaces like that. Elevating the local area was also a key factor, utilising designers such as House of Hackney. The space used to be a photography studio, so I wanted to bear this in mind to bring everything together too.
DID YOU USE AN INTERIOR DESIGNER?
We didn’t use an interior designer, but I love Architectural Digest and I’m an avid watcher of their Open Door series. I’ve really enjoyed curating different interiors most of my life, so this was a fun project to take on myself.
DESCRIBE THE VIBE CREATED BY YOUR INTERIOR. Sustainable elegance.
WHAT DO YOU HOPE ARE YOUR CLIENTS’ FIRST IMPRESSIONS WHEN THEY WALK IN?
‘Wow!’ The large space and high ceilings give a very impressive first reaction. I would love clients, freelancers and creatives alike to be able to walk into the studio and feel like they can take a deep breath and ground themselves in the space.
WHAT ARE THE KEY ELEMENTS OF YOUR DESIGN?
The curated and second-hand sourced furniture, the triple height ceiling with the soft lime-washed walls, the elegant House of Hackney backwash area and the calming mezzanine area.
DO YOU HAVE ANY CURATED PIECES OR SPECIAL FEATURES IN THE STUDIO?
The main special feature is the House of Hackney wallpaper on the ceiling of the backwash area that follows into the large curtain of the same design.
HOW HAVE YOU EMBRACED SUSTAINABILITY WITHIN THE DESIGN?
Every element of our design has sustainability at the forefront. Every piece was sourced either from Facebook Marketplace or from local flea markets – from the massaging backwashes to the mid-century pieces. All electronics in the space are either refurbished or sourced second-hand – from the coffee machine to the 4K projector.
Whilst we were building the space, we rented building tools so that nothing had to be unnecessarily bought. We’ve also utilised all the old building materials and remade them into new pieces such as shelving and cupboards. Our whole ethos was ‘the world doesn’t need more stuff’ and that kept us on track with everything we were doing.
Along with our Eco Heads, each basin has an A++ water heater connected to it to save on water and energy. Lastly, plants were a key part of our design for sustainability, naturally purifying our air and giving us a circular movement for our hair waste and water waste.
WHAT SALON SOFTWARE DO YOU USE AND WHAT FEATURE OF IT DO YOU FIND MOST USEFUL?
We don’t use any specific software. Each freelancer has their own software company they like to work with, and we support them with whichever they decide on.
DID YOUR PRODUCT BRAND OR COLOUR HOUSE INFLUENCE YOUR STYLE OF INTERIOR DESIGN?
As a brand-neutral space, it was really important for us to be a blank canvas whilst still keeping our own aesthetic.
WHAT SALON FURNITURE HAVE YOU CHOSEN AND WHY?
We sourced Pietranera massaging backwash basins second-hand and the furniture team at Salon Supplies were fantastic to work with to restore them. We also went with Takara Belmont chairs – we were gifted two of them from a previous studio space and we sourced two more second-hand from our friends at Sassoon. The chairs work so well as they are simple and elegant within the large space.
DO YOU HAVE A DRESS CODE/UNIFORM FOR YOUR TEAM?
No, we are a creative space and we encourage individualism.

I’m never happier than when I’m hanging out with Gregg, my miniature sausage dog. He’s four years old and has completely changed my life for the better. He’s a constant source of joy and is loved by my whole team and all my clients – in fact, he’s become something of a salon mascot!

WHAT’S YOUR FAVOURITE THING TO DO IN YOUR FREE TIME?
I like to spend as much of my free time as possible with my husband James and our dog Gregg. We live in Manchester city centre, so we have got everything we could want on our doorstep! Most places are really dog friendly, so we can go to the gym regularly and nice restaurants together too. One of my favourite places is the Blues Kitchen because I love the live music, so we often go there for a dance.
CAN YOU TELL US ABOUT THE INSPIRATION BEHIND YOUR LATEST COLLECTION?
No, I can’t! Our collection for this year is a secret for now, but I’m really proud of it and excited to hear what others think!
