ARTIST SPOTLIGHT

Gail and Allan Sustare Designers of jewelry and objects of art

Since 1974, Gail and Allan Sustare have designed and created one of a kind and limited edition jewelry designs and objects of art in precious materials. Their work began in 1974 with a group of local artists in the underground area of downtown Syracuse referred to as “Village Square.” By 1980 they had opened “The Studio Gallery” which represented local and national artists. They had shown work nationally and were active in national groups for gallery owners that worked with American artists. “We started from a found antler drop we came across while hiking, and it all seemed to mushroom from there.” Gail studied visual and performing arts and fine arts at Syracuse University, with a masters degree in communication from the Newhouse School of Public Communications and was working as a producer at WSYR. Allan, after getting out of the Air Force, studied sculpture and experimental studios at Syracuse University. They had just started working together and had begun to get their work into local galleries when they were invited to join the group in Village Square, a part of the initial American Crafts Movement. Over the years pieces have included antler, non endangered ivory, like fossil walrus or mammoth ivory. Current works include these as well as sterling, 10,14, and 18k gold, and gemstones. Custom designing is also important to the Sustare Studios. “We enjoy working with a person, couple or group to make something really meaningful.” They have

made hundreds of custom wedding and commitment bands over the years, logo pins or pendants for groups like the Junior League, and Cazenovia College years ago. Current work for Allan includes a series of pocket knives with handles of fossil ivory and other unusual materials. Gail has focused on jewelry and small sculptural pieces. After closing their gallery, Gail and Allan went on to other work, but continued designing together, and occasionally showed their work at local galleries and shows. Now reaching retirement age, they can go back to their first love, art and design. “We are thrilled to part of the Broad Street Gallery. It is great to be working with a group of artists, and wonderful to be able to meet and work directly with people again. We hope everyone will stop in and visit.” Stop in and see their work at Broad Street Gallery. 20 Broad St. | Hamilton | 315-825-5235 www.facebook.com/HCAbroadstreetgallery
