Business Spotlight

14 Lebanon Street in downtown Hamilton is the home of Oliveri’s Pizzeria. Owner Mike Clare grew up in East Utica, NY and attributes his passion for food to his predominately Italian-American family. Walk through the front door of the pizzeria and you are greeted by the sounds of Louie Prima and the aroma of all things Italian. Oliveri’s offers an extensive menu that is so much more than pizza and wings: Gyros, Utica-style Italian Greens, Arancini (rice balls), Paninis, Tomato Pie and Burgers are also served. Home to one of the best dessert cases in Hamilton, you can always find a selection of Italian pastries and other delicious sweets. They are open seven days a week for lunch, dinner and delivery and are proud to serve the greater Hamilton community. Stay tuned for the reveal of their new menu!

ARTIST SPOTLIGHT

Kara Distefano Rusch

Kara Distefano Rusch was whisked out of Brooklyn, NY at a young age and dropped off in Redwood, NY, where there was not much to do but roam the countryside during the day and listen to Bebop at night. In 1976 her parents started Cadence Jazz Magazine, a journal dedicated to the creative improvised music scene. The daily doses of Charlie Parker, John Coltrane, Charles Mingus and Ella Fitzgerald soon came to include the avant-garde sounds of Willem Breuker, Peter Brotzmann, Joe McPhee and Marilyn Crispell. Not being a musician herself but spending much of her time in the company of music and musicians, Kara decided to combine her ear for music with her talent for wielding a mighty paintbrush. In 1996 she started painting album covers for the CIMP label (www.cimprecords.com). To date she has provided the artwork for all 300 plus covers. Kara relocated to Hamilton, NY in 2007. In the spring of 2012, under the direction of Professor Lynette Stephenson, she had the opportunity to hang a show in Colgate University’s Ryan Hall. It was then that she conceived the 12 X 12 Project. Once again Kara combined two loves: her love of music with her love for painting. Each of the paintings in the 12 X 12 Project begins with a record that has inspired her for years—but that it begun and finished in the time it took to play the recording from start to finish. Like the Jazz she often listens to, the paintings are all improvised. But playing time is not the only rule she has made for herself: she also confines each painting to what colors appear on the original LP jacket or CD cover. For instance, John Coltrane A Love Supreme has a black and white photo for its cover, so the 12 X 12 painting that responds to it is also limited to black and white. Each painting in this project also comes with hand-painted spines, so that the sides of the canvas names the title and catalog number of the original recording as it originally appeared. All 36 paintings were on display at the Hamilton Center for the Arts in the spring of 2013. In addition to working on the ongoing 12 X 12 Project, she is currently working on a series of large paintings called The Bicycle Series— musings while on the bike. She can be heard Mondays 5pm-7pm on WRCU 90.1 fm—Colgate University radio—with cohost Michael Coyle on the “The Slim & Him” jazz show.

Kara’s work can currently be seen in the Colgate University Department of English and at the Broad Street Art Gallery, as well as online at www.karadrusch.com and www.cimprecords.com/about
