BUSINESS SPOTLIGHT: HAMILTON CENTER FOR THE ARTS

The Hamilton Center for the Arts celebrated its six year anniversary on June 20. In October of 2013 they moved to their new location at 19 Lebanon Street. The new HCA consists of sitting areas and a small library, a gallery available for solo and group exhibits, a dance studio, full kitchen, large art studio, basement and community garden. The entire space is welcoming and bright. Many free events are offered to the community, including a monthly dinner on the fourth Wednesday of every month, as well as musical, theater and dance performances, open houses and art openings. The community is welcome to sit and have a cup of tea and browse through the art books or visit the community garden out back. In addition to free events, the HCA provides many classes. There are adult yoga and painting classes this summer. They plan on teaching more art classes for adults in the fall including a series of Saturday workshops. Studio Art and Fashion Design Classes are offered for teens. Currently HCA offers a Multi-Arts Program after school and camps during school breaks and the summer. Some of the classes taught in MAP and the camps are: 2D and 3D art, creative writing and illustrating, theater, dance, yoga and cooking. Music Together is a class for young families and is taught by instructors from all over the world. In Spring Semester 2013, they started providing dance classes taught by Colgate students. Due to popular demand, this upcoming fall semester they have students teaching five different dance classes as well as music classes in chorus and piano. Students gain valuable teaching experience and families benefit from a diverse offering of very affordable classes. A benefit for scholarships coming up in July will be Florent Renard-Payen performing a solo cello recital entitled “Bach and Beyond” on Friday, July 25 at 6:00 pm. (www.cellistflorent.com). In Spring Semester 2015, Colgate Studio Art Majors will have an opportunity to participate in a group show in the HCA Gallery. Also in the spring, they look forward to hosting an Art and Music Festival. This event will be a fundraiser for scholarships for children to attend classes and camps in the arts. The hours at the Hamilton Center for the Arts vary seasonally. You can always call the director, Kathy Herold, at 315 368-4453 or visit the website @ www.hamiltoncenterforthearts.com for more information on classes, camps, performances and events.

BUSINESS SPOTLIGHT: BROAD STREET GALLERY Hamilton Center for the Arts’ Broad Street Gallery is located at 20 Broad Street across from the Hamilton Village Green. The venue is a large, beautiful and bright space – the ideal place to showcase diverse and eclectic fine art. Two and one-half years ago the BSG opened to fill the need of artists looking for an affordable and professional location to exhibit and sell their work. Initially organized as a fine arts co-op, the gallery is now a combination of both member and consigned regional artists. Member artists run the gallery together and support each other in their work. They have just recently begun to involve Colgate students as interns. This is an opportunity for students to learn through experience by working with professional artists in all aspects of running a fine arts gallery. From curation and gallery staffing to event promotion, students learn the basics of running a gallery. In the gallery you will find paintings, photography, ceramics, jewelry, fine wood art, sculpture and more on exhibit and all for sale. The front section is dedicated to the current works of various artists. The back is set apart for solo exhibits and special events. On July 25, 4-6pm there will be an open house reception to celebrate an exhibit of tie dye mandalas of Courtenay Pollock (www.courtenaytiedye.com), best known for being the t-shirt artist for the Grateful Dead. Artists are always adding new work, so stop in often to see what they have created. Gallery hours are Wednesday-Saturday, 11am-6pm and Sunday, noon-4pm. Visit our website at www.hamiltoncenterforthearts.com to learn more about the Broad Street Gallery, the artists and upcoming events.
