MEET JOSH

He's an accomplished artist whose love of art runs in the family. Read his story on pages 4–5

EXPERIENCING LIFE TOGETHER

I

have a friend whom I’ve not seen for nearly three years. Usually when we get together it’s over lunch or dinner. We pick up right where we left off like no time has passed. But like most of the world these past few years, we’ve had to stay in touch via Zoom in order to see each other or email and text to catch up. As we all know, it is really not the same as being in the same room, spending time together, and enjoying each other’s company in the moment.

IN THIS ISSUE

John Estrem (left) and Justin The singer-songwriter Michael Johnson Evilsizer at the 2022 Annual so poignantly writes, “It’s the time you Spring Breakfast. waste with them, that makes a friend a friend.” When you are with a person, in person, you experience all the sensations, smells, laughter, tears, joy; all the emotions that make us human, all that makes us whole, is part of the entire experience.

In our organization, we value our relationships. This is especially true for staff, the individuals we support, as well as family members and supporters. We are thrilled to be back having in-person events with you, our families, and our friends, as we continue enriching our relationships. In this issue of Discoveries, you will read about Josh, an artist who paints in his studio and is excited to be able to go out and about to activities. You will read about our new volunteer opportunity, “Cooks in the Kitchen,” which provides meals to some of our homes. You will also see that our truly dedicated staff again voted us a “Top 200 Workplace” for the thirteenth year in a row! And as always, we thank you, our generous supporters, who have stood by us through thick and thin, providing financial support, volunteer time, advocacy support, and so much more. Thank you for making it possible for us to do what we do. Whether it is in person or virtually, we are so grateful for your continued support. Blessings,

BOARD SPOTLIGHT

SERVING THE MISSION by Blaine Stephens, Hammer Residences and Northeast Residence Board President

I

n 2018, after a rewarding corporate career, I wanted to contribute my skills to give back to my community. Through my connections as a past Board member of the White Bear Lake Chamber of Commerce, Northeast Residence’s (NER) Board President, Joan Purrington, invited me to consider a Board of Directors opportunity at Northeast Residence. I was so impressed with the people I met at NER during the vetting process that I said yes to joining the Board. Fast forward to 2022, and I am immersed in this great community of committed and caring individuals. I am proud to serve as the President of the Hammer and the NER Board of Directors as of January 1, 2022. So much has happened over these past four years. I have served as the Treasurer and the Vice President of the NER Board. After leadership changes at NER, we were at a crossroads: Should we continue to go it alone or should we join with another organization that would allow us to have a broader impact in the community? Working with consultants, Board members, senior staff, and the interim director of NER, we began conversations with other providers. As we got to know Hammer Residences, it became clear that we were twins separated at birth. The values of both organizations, the philosophies of support, and the way we approach the work so closely align. It has been a delight to be part of this merger of two quality organizations.

Throughout my career, I have learned to listen and ask good questions. I believe that is how you get the best information. I view my role on the Board as supporter and facilitator. CEO John Estrem has the vision to make remarkable things happen for both organizations. He is such a compassionate person, so experienced, and kind. Working with John has been inspiring and educational. I look forward to our future together, meeting more people (in person!), seeing the smiles of the people we serve, and the staff enjoying the vital roles they play. When I spend time at Hammer and NER, it is like a big extended family with everyone supporting everyone. I am pleased to play a small part in serving such a wonderful mission.

We are stronger together and accomplish more as one organization than we could working alone. We have streamlined processes and adopted new internal management systems. The renewed focus on fundraising at NER has allowed us to bring in a full-time nurse to our staff. Most importantly, we use fundraised dollars to bring joy into the lives of the people we support.

“CEO John Estrem has the vision to make remarkable things happen for both organizations. He is such a compassionate person, so experienced and kind.” — Blaine Stephens

Meet the Artist—Josh Buell Painting is an outlet for this creative soul by Jennifer L. Hipple, Communications Specialist

J

osh Buell loves to paint and he’s pretty creative! The walls of Hammer’s Jersey home in Golden Valley, where Josh has resided for the past year-and-a-half, are decorated with his work. Being an artist happens to run in the family. His mother is a full-time artist as a photographer and jewelry maker. Both sets of grandparents are artists (his grandfather was also an art teacher). His uncle is a well-known glass blower. So, how could Josh not be an artist?

made a trip to Michael’s craft store to buy some new brushes. “My other ones were crap,” he says as he shows a visitor his newest brushes. “I’m not usually a fan of big brushes, it depends on what I’m doing.” He says he will use them to lay down a background.

Josh shows a visitor the studio he has set up on the lower level of the Jersey home. Sometimes a buddy, another artist, comes over and paints with him. “We talk like crazy,” he says. “When I paint, I like someone to talk to.” Other times he listens to music. “Classical and gospel and some pop,” he says. “I like Beethoven. It calms me.”

Paintings in various stages of completion are spread out on tables. Josh will typically paint three or four days a week for two to four hours at a time. Lately, Josh has been working on a series of paintings of bowling balls wearing antlers, something he saw at a bowling alley. “I’m trying to get it perfect,” he says as he adds small touches to the shape of the bowling ball. Many of his paintings have a touch of whimsy to them. He likes to paint everything from animals to geometric shapes. A painting of a blow dryer lies nearby.

Josh sits at his worktable, surrounded by jars of brushes and trays of acrylic paints. Next to him is a new rolling cart with drawers. “I didn’t have enough room for my paints, so my mom bought it as an early birthday present,” he says. Josh recently

When Josh finishes a painting, his mother, Kim, photographs them and uses the pictures to makes cards and prints to sell at a local coffee shop and the Northeast Farmers’ Market. “He has a following,” Kim says. “People seek him out and want to

buy his new work and see him and talk with him. He’s sold several originals in the past.” As with many of the individuals Hammer and NER serve, Josh deals with many medical issues and has undergone several surgeries. “He’s had a lot to deal with,” Kim says, “but he’s very determined.” Kim says TikTok has really buoyed Josh up. “He doesn’t like to paint alone, but he found out if you can get a thousand followers on TikTok you can do live artwork. He figured out how to do it, that’s how determined he is. He wants to paint and now he can paint live on TikTok as well as paint with other artists. He’s made a good friend in another state.” What’s the nicest thing someone’s said about his painting? “Amazing,” he says with a smile. “It brings him joy,” Kim says. Josh is scheduled for another surgery this fall. We wish him smooth sailing and a speedy recovery.

COOKS IN THE KITCHEN!

NEW VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITY TO LEND A HELPING HAND by Cathy Thoma, Director of Volunteer Resources

D

o you have a small team of friends, family, or coworkers who like to cook and are interested in a fun, quick, and easy volunteer opportunity? We have just the thing for you! Our new Cooks in the Kitchen program is a great way for a small team of volunteers to lend a big helping hand to some of our homes that are particularly short staffed, allowing them to spend more time on personal care for the individuals, rather than cooking.

kitchen and then divided into large containers and put into special carrying containers. Once the meals are completed, Central Office staff deliver them to four of our homes that have staffing shortages right now. “We’ve expanded to also support one of our NER homes and hope to add more,” Cathy says. “It’s one way we can lend a helping hand to our hardworking direct support staff, and they get to enjoy the meals as well.”

“This is a nice way to give back,” says Hammer’s Director of Volunteer Services, Cathy Thoma. “It takes just four to six volunteers to prepare the meals. You come into our Hammer kitchen for about three hours and prepare two recipes that are delivered to four homes, which adds up to 80 individual meals.” As a thank you, each volunteer receives one of our specially designed Cooks in the Kitchen potholders. No special culinary skills required! The volunteer team is provided with the recipes and after some brief instruction, begins the prep, which can involve browning hamburger, or cooking chicken, along with chopping up lots of veggies. Hammer’s kitchen (on the lower level of the Central Office) is well stocked with all the utensils, tools, and pots and pans that are needed. The meals are cooked in the Hammer

These meals are absolutely fantastic. The chicken stew looked and tasted divine. Tell everyone to keep up the good job. Everyone loves them at Sheridan. You know the food is good when no one is talking because they are just eating. Melissa Yajko, Director of Sales Strategy at Business Essentials “We’ve done Cooks in the Kitchen three times,” Melissa says. “It’s great for team building and fun to work on doing something completely different. We wanted to start getting out there in the community. We wanted to find a way to give of our time and Hammer makes it easy, and we got to learn more about what they do. The recipes are there, things are ready to go. The whole process is very easy to just step into to help out. We look forward to doing it again.”

Jami Schaehrer, Production Manager and Media Development at Color Glo “It feels like being in grandma's kitchen, having fun hanging out together," says Jami.” Her brother, Michael, happens to reside at one of the homes that receives the meals. “This experience provided our team with an opportunity to share more about their lives. I found out that others have family members with special needs. We also had a chance to go around the Central Office and learn more about the company that takes care of my brother. Everyone was so welcoming. It’s probably the most Minnesota nice company I’ve seen. When you walk in you get to see photos of the homes and the people you’re impacting. It’s a lovely program to go forward with.”

MOMO’S STORY—PURSUIT OF A PhD

EDUCATION GRANTS HELP HAMMER EMPLOYEES SERVE THEIR COMMUNITY by Jennifer L. Hipple, Communications Specialist

T

o know Momo Johnson is to be inspired by him. Momo has worked at Hammer for 18 years. He is a fulltime Direct Support Professional (DSP) at our Jersey home and also picks up shifts at our First Avenue home. On Sundays, although it’s his day off, Momo goes back to Jersey to help with activities and take one of the individuals we serve to play hockey. With the support of Hammer education grants, Momo is also working on his PhD—which he does at night.

When asked if he ever sleeps, Momo smiles and says his PhD in public health and epidemiology will enable him to help more people who are either pre-diabetic or living with diabetes. His area of study and his dissertation is on type 2 diabetes among African immigrants and refugees. “It will also benefit Hammer,” Momo says. “With the population of residents we have, I believe that in each of the Hammer homes you’ll find one or two people suffering from the disease. Upon completion of my PhD and Mitch and while doing research, I can be helpful to Momo Hammer.” Momo also did his master’s work, online through Walden University, with support from Hammer’s education grants. “I’ve used them a couple of times,” he says. “I just applied for my next grant.” The grants allow Momo, and other Hammer employees, to continue their education while working fulltime. “This (education) is not to earn a higher salary but to help people,” he says. “When I was studying African culture, I started focusing on diet and diabetes. It is a bad disease. It can make you go blind. It affects almost all parts of your body. If you recognize it and catch it when you’re borderline, and obey the rules, it’s possible to ‘get out,’” he says, “start exercising, modify your diet.” Momo says it will take him five years to finish his PhD. He is grateful for the education grants he has received, made possible by Hammer’s donors to our education fund. He encourages others to make use of them. “What you are learning, you’re not just learning for yourself, but you’ll share your knowledge with other people. With my education, my hope is not to leave Hammer, but to help people who are pre-diabetic or have diabetes,” he says. “I praise God and pray for those people who are making the money available (for the grants),” Momo says. “Thank you.” 10 |

JOHNETTA’S JOURNEY

HAMMER’S EDUCATION GRANTS SUPPORT CAREER DEVELOPMENT by Jennifer L. Hipple, Communications Specialist

W

hen Johnetta Sumo was just 8 years old, she wanted to be a doctor. Growing up in Liberia, she saw her mother pass away at a really young age. “They weren’t able to help her,” Johnetta says. “It inspired me to want to become a doctor.” In 2018, Johnetta came to work at Hammer as an Assistant Program Manager at our Queensland home. She wanted to become a licensed practical nurse (LPN), so she moved to a Direct Support Professional (DSP) role while she went to school with the help of a donor-supported Hammer educational grant. After Johnetta earned her degree in 2019, she joined Hammer’s nursing team. Johnetta’s currently back at school, pursuing her registered nursing (RN) degree. “I’ve got three more semesters,” she says. You can hear the excitement and relief in her voice.

Johnetta checks in with Barbara and Vince.

While Johnetta works fulltime at Hammer as an LPN, her educational pursuits have been made easier with donor-supported Hammer education grants. “It has helped significantly,” she says. “It helps me pay my bills and pay for another semester.” Working and going to school can be tough especially for a single mom of a 10-yearold daughter. “Having Hammer work with me has helped me balance work and school and what I learn at school I’m able to apply at work,” Johnetta says. “I’m thankful to the nursing team at Hammer. They are very understanding. They took over my caseload while I was gone to Africa.” A few months ago, Johnetta participated in a mission trip to her native Liberia as part of an eight-member nursing team. “We want to help improve the quality of care in underdeveloped countries,” she says. “It was a very fulfilling opportunity. We trained over 200 nurses and midwives on how to do CPR, conduct

head-to-toe assessments, take vital signs, and do proper documentation. We also provided each of them with a nursing essentials bag. It inspired me to further my education, to perhaps become a nurse practitioner or achieve a doctorate degree in nursing.” Johnetta says she is grateful for the Hammer education grants she has received. “They have really made a difference for me. I want others to benefit from my education.”

ADVOCACY IS AN ONGOING NEED THINGS TO CELEBRATE—THINGS TO DO! by Mary Gaasch, Director of Advocacy and Community Relations

D

id you know that Minnesota is the only state in the union whose legislature sets the rates that we can pay our Direct Support Professionals? We know that investing in the wages we pay our DSPs and Program Managers means better lives for people with disabilities. Having strong relationships with our legislators means we can begin to build a care infrastructure that works for all.

2. Host a visit with your legislator or your loved one’s legislator. If you are open to connecting with them, I am happy to manage all the details.

3. Most importantly, vote! This fall everyone is up for election in the state of Minnesota. And much of the U.S. Congress is up for election, too! I am happy to help get you registered and figure out where to vote. I will be sharing a lot of information this summer and fall so stay tuned!

Lisa and Kris hold a sign at the Capitol.

I always welcome you to reach out to me with questions or for a cup of coffee! I am here to make this work easy and fun. I am deeply grateful for our partnership. Email me at maryg@hammer.org with any questions.

Families, I know you have spent a lifetime advocating for your loved ones, and I know you are tired. Our staff advocate for folks we serve every day, and they are working very hard. And our self-advocates have been doing this work for a lifetime! But your voices are essential to making things better. We need your partnership in this work. There are things we can celebrate: Your calls, visits, e-mails, and action alerts made a critical difference during this recent legislative session. But we have a lot of work to do to build a care infrastructure that helps people with disabilities live life to the fullest. As we move forward, here are some easy ways to continue your advocacy:

1. Get involved with Advocating Change Together!

ACT is a wonderful organization that offers training and support for self-advocates. They also offer a selfadvocacy academy for folks who want to learn more. If you or your loved one is interested, please reach out to me for more information.

TWO PLACES TO CALL HOME: WILLIE'S STORY by Nate Reed, NER Development, Fundraising Manager

I

had the opportunity to sit down with Kelly and Theresa Daily at the Allen home in Little Canada as they prepared to pick up their son, Willie, for his daily visit to their home. “While we love having him come home daily,” Theresa says, “we know that the Allen home is a perfect place for him to be. He has two homes now.” Kelly and Theresa waited as long as they could to transition Willie into a group home--probably longer than they should have they say. “We were worried that no one could care like we did,” shared Kelly, “But we are getting older and can no longer provide all of the support Willie needs. It’s great to have partners in his care. The staff here love him and know him well.” Willie has been at Allen home for a little over two years, but his connection to Northeast Residence is much longer. Willie started attending the Extended Day Program when he was 6 years old. Kelly and Theresa say the program was a lifesaver as he had a safe, reliable place to be after school. As Willie has transitioned into living with NER, his parents feel the same way about his Allen home. “Knowing that he is cared for 24/7 by people who truly care about him and want to do all they can to help him is a huge blessing,” Theresa says. The Dailys say Willie’s health has always been a struggle that has made his life harder. “He has had monthly hospital stays

during the past four years,” Theresa says, “But the attentiveness and support of the staff here (at Allen home) has made those stays shorter. They catch changes in Willie that are so subtle and share any concerns with us.” There’s something else that is also very important to the Dailys. “There is an overnight awake staff at the Allen home, that was a must when we were choosing a home,” Theresa says. “Willie does not sleep well, although we have noticed that has improved recently. I think the routine they have been able to establish has been key. The home is also single-story, which was a must have!” The Dailys have been longtime donors to NER. “It’s easy to support places that support Willie,” they say. “The value of the service provided is something that we look at,” says Kelly, “and the value here is good.”

He has two homes now. —Theresa Daily

GRANT PROVIDES FOR TECHNOLOGY UPDATES AND ENHANCED SERVICES by Nate Reed, NER Development, Fundraising Manager

N

ortheast Residence has been fortunate to receive grants that enhance our ability to provide services. In 2021, a grant from the Fred C. and Katherine B. Andersen Foundation supported our efforts to improve technology and increase communication throughout our organization. We purchased new laptops and tablets/iPads for each of the 24 homes so staff can work more efficiently and have instant access to reference guides and manuals. We are also networking our group homes with the help of Hammer’s and NER’s IT departments. We now have Zoom and Microsoft Teams on laptops at each home so the individuals we support can participate in virtual family gatherings, speak with people from their day programs, and participate virtually in meetings and appointments. Hammer and NER caregivers are now using electronic data collection and documentation to support individual care plans to achieve each individual's goals. Communication entries between nursing and staff are available in real time to facilitate swift responses and more timely care in urgent situations. These entries also provide seamless transitions during shift

changes and keep a historical record of medical conditions, treatment plans, and schedules. In addition, our newly hired RN can virtually triage with direct support staff utilizing the new iPads, which allow staff to respond quickly to health concerns and limit unnecessary visits to Urgent Care. Access to additional resources will make life a bit easier for those who are not fond of going to a clinic when they do not feel well or need lab work. The bottom line? Hammer and NER can continue to provide better access to the people we serve and to each other, which will improve performance long into the future.

e are friends.” That is what Deb Gjoraas and her husband, Jake, say about Carla, Cindy, Stephanie, and Amy, the four women who live at Hammer’s Rockford home located in Plymouth. For 20 years, Deb has been giving the ladies piano lessons, going to plays and concerts, sharing holidays and family celebrations, and growing from a volunteer to a dearly loved and valued member of the Rockford family. In her early career, Deb was a music therapist and worked with children in schools with disabilities and through that, she found Hammer, and it has been a perfect fit ever since. Deb sees the ladies weekly when it works with all of their busy schedules. She loves the flexibility to spend time with just Cindy or Carla or the whole group. Even the caregivers join in the fun sometimes! Deb relies on the Direct Support Professionals at the home to help manage calendars and they communicate with Deb to arrange time together. When they can’t be together, Deb and Jake stay in touch with the house by sending postcards, even from as far away as New Zealand. Sometimes life challenges bring them together. When Carla’s mom passed away, Deb was there for her. When Cindy had surgery, Deb visited her at her mom and dad’s home. And when Deb’s husband, Jake, was battling cancer, he heard kind words of encouragement and concern from the Rockford ladies. They share and confide in each other as friends do. They also have a lot of fun. A favorite date is going to local

It started with piano lessons and we became a family.

summer concerts together, almost always ending the night with ice cream.

Deb enjoys spending time with the ladies at Hammer's Rockford home.

Deb and Jake have done thoughtful planning about supporting Hammer with their financial gifts. They recalled at a Reach for Ralph fundraising event when “Lunch with Ted,” a man served at Hammer, was the top live auction item that year. “You really changed his story from a man with challenges, to a man who is a star,” Deb says. Deb and Jake have made a conscious choice to put Hammer at the top of their list of nonprofits to support with their gifts. “We give to a few organizations who are doing well and who have long-range plans for the people they are serving and their staff. We see Hammer meeting the needs of the ladies at the Rockford home now and know they will need additional investment in the work, especially as they are aging.” Deb shared in closing, “I’m proud of volunteering. Hammer lets me be a role model. I tell everyone that when I walk in that house (Rockford), I feel like I’m family. That feels good!”

Jake and Deb Gjoraas are friends of Hammer and longtime supporters of our summer fundraiser, Reach for Ralph.

Make a gift directly from your IRA to Hammer. If you are age 70½ or older, you can give a gift directly from your IRA to support Hammer Residences. While you will not receive an income-tax deduction, you will not pay taxes on any distributions made directly to Hammer. A gift from your IRA also reduces your taxable income, which could help reduce your Medicare premiums and the amount of Social Security benefits that are taxable. You can contact your IRA plan administrator to request that a qualified charitable distribution be made directly to Hammer Residences today.

Lynn Aase lived at Hammer for more than 40 years and was surrounded by people who loved her. One of those friends was Karole Whipps, who thought of herself as a “big sister” to Lynn. Karole met Lynn in the 1960s while working at Honeywell with Lynn’s mom, Mary. Karole included Hammer in her will and so was named to our Alvina Hammer Heritage Society. In early 2022, sadly, Karole passed. We later received one of the largest gifts of the year, directed to our Area of Greatest Need. The impact of her lifetime of support cannot be understated. We are humbled and thankful for Karole’s generosity.

Lynn lived a full life at Hammer with the same group of five people for most of her life.

“I am proud of my connection to Hammer that I have had since 1976. That’s 45 years of stories of guys like Harold who would stop by looking for a Dr. Pepper I always kept on hand for him, or seeing full tables of Hammer individuals enjoying Bruegger’s Bagels, or being surrounded by a community that supports people of all abilities. How can you be in Wayzata and not know and love Hammer?!
