LIGHT AT THE END OF THE TUNNEL

T

hirty-nine years ago, I went on a driving trip with a friend exploring the east coast. The trip was not planned out with any detail, as the whole point was to discover things along the way. One day we came upon the Chesapeake Bay Bridge-Tunnel, a 17.6 mile stretch mostly tunnel, with a few “islands” where you come above the water for a short time. Being young, we entered the tunnel with great enthusiasm. After a long time traveling through a tube under the water, we were very grateful when we emerged onto the first island. This past year reminded me of being in that tunnel. The COVID-19 pandemic is very disorientating. There were times when I wondered if we were ever going to emerge into the sunlight. So many things in my life and the lives of staff and the people we support have changed. Keeping ourselves and others safe has become ourmantra. We have learned so much, most of it we never set out to learn. The recent vaccines have become a light in the tunnel of COVID. While not perfect, they allow us to return to a more typical life. The tendency is to want to rush headlong into all the activities that we have missed so much in the last year. We are being intentional and starting toopenslowly as weembrace more things in the community. While we know the pandemic is not completely over, we also know that it is time to live life more fully, in proper measure. There are also hard, but important, lessons that we have learned in the last year that we do not want to forget. Primary among them is the value of relationships. We have become even more of a family during the last year. We have learned to depend on each other in deeper and richer ways andhow to cherish time together in simpler ways. We found the simple things like playing Bingo, an at-home movie night, or a BBQ in the backyard can be as meaningful as a big splashy night out. Most of all, we never want to forget all the people who supported us and continue to do so. We are so grateful for all of you. We are humbled by your passion for our mission and your love of the people we support. We would not have made it through this year without you. Thanks for standing with us as we traveled through the tunnel and for helping us see the light as we emerge.

ROBERT LOCKWOOD, BOARD SPOTLIGHT

A LIFE DEDICATED TO DISABILITY SERVICES AND FAMILY By Robert (Bob) Lockwood, Hammer Residences and Northeast Residence Board of Directors

I

have been involved with the disability community ever since my girls, Stacy and Dru, were born sixteen months apart in the late 1950s. Both girls were born with seizures that took a long period of time to be controlled, cerebral palsy, and developmental delay diagnosis followed. In those days, it was common to be pressured to give children with disabilities up, to be told that the best thing would be to turn them over to the state for care, and that they wouldn’t live very long. But my wife, Audrey, and I knew better, and we were always on the “keep them at home” side of any discussions around what was best. We had the support of our family who lived nearby, but at that time there were not many services available. I became very involved in what is now known as ARC, chairing the Governmental Affairs Committee and lobbying for changes in state law to fund programs. We started to work on closing institutions and opening communitybased supports. Being the engineer that I was professionally, I built our own adaptive equipment, like a standing table, so Stacy could play with toys. Eventually, ARC was given Camp Friendship and they started a Family Camp. It was there, with the help of a counselor, that both girls learned to walk.

them. At the time, we were living in St. Anthony Village in a five-bedroom, fivelevel, split level home. While it took a while, we were able to get a waiver in 1985 so we moved out, and the girls stayed in the home with five other women. As they got older they needed a home that was more accessible and better met their needs, so they moved into Northeast Residence 33. I am so happy that Stacy and Dru were able to build lives of their own as adults, independent from mom and dad. Audrey and I dedicated our lives to our girls and the disability community. Audrey was an educator, an

active volunteer, and worked as a special ed aide. She died in 2001 after living with cancer for five-and-a-half years. Stacy went on to live a very active and full life of 62 years. Today, I am living with my sister, Sally, also a widow. As a young 88-year-old, I keep very, very busy and spend as much time as I can with Dru, who is now 61 years old. I look forward to serving on the Board of Directors of both NER and Hammer and using my executive management background, along with my life experience, to help both organizations navigate today’s cultural and economic climate.

“I am so happy that Stacy and Dru were able to build lives of their own as adults, independent from mom and dad.” — Bob Lockwood, NER and Hammer Board Member

We were members of Mount Olivet Lutheran Church that had a Sunday school for children with special needs. I spoke with Dr. Youngdahl about my concerns for residential care and this led to the creation of Mount Olivet Rolling Acres in the 1960s. I knew the girls were going to need residential supports at some point and that could be a step forward for them. We lived together as a family for 26 years, including two years in Portugal. In 1980, we started talking about “placement” for

TWINS SEPARATED AT BIRTH by Joe Cullen, Communication Specialist

T

hat’s how Lin Curran describes the partnership between Hammer Residences (Hammer) and Northeast Residence (NER). Lin has worn a variety of hats since joining NER in 1987 and is currently their Director of Operations. NER had its beginnings in the early 1970s when a group of dedicated and caring people in the northeast metro area of the Twin Cities who worked with children with developmental disabilities had a vision. Through much hard work and dedication, NER was incorporated and approved as a nonprofit organization in 1973. “Our success over the years at NER is thanks to many people,” says Lin. “Our dedicated volunteer board of directors, our direct care staff, management staff, and many others have helped support the families in our area.” In comparison, Hammer was founded in 1923 by Alvina Hammer, who also believed individuals with disabilities have the right to live in a loving home environment where they can flourish, develop independence and self-confidence, and live a full life.

Over the past year, NER was looking for an organization with similar values and beliefs to partner with. It just so happened Hammer was doing the same. On January 1, 2021 Hammer Residences officially acquired NER. Long-time NER Board Member Joan Purrington agrees with Curran’s assessment that NER and Hammer are like “twins separated at birth” (and not just because Joan is a twin herself!). “Both of our organizations share the same values, that every person in our care deserves a safe and healthy place to live with person-centered support,” says Joan. NER’s headquarters are located in White Bear Lake. NER has 25 group homes located primarily in Ramsey and Washington Counties including White Bear Lake, White Bear Township, Maplewood, Shoreview, North St. Paul, Roseville, Little Canada, Vadnais Heights, Hugo, Oakdale and Woodbury. NER also has one home in Hennepin County in St. Anthony. Lin says that staff at NER are excited about the acquisition by Hammer. She adds that some were nervous at first, as to be

expected with that type of news, but they felt better when they realized just how much the two organizations have in common. Lin believes that Hammer and NER will realize many benefits from this affiliation including: •

Because Hammer is a larger organization, it will be able to support NER in addressing staffing challenges, strengthening critical programs, and improving employee support.

Hammer’s homes and apartments are in the western suburbs of the Twin Cities and NER’s homes are in the northeast metro region. By joining the two organizations together, we will have a strong presence across the Twin Cities.

Together, NER and Hammer will be better positioned to play a stronger advocacy role for the individuals served and make an impact on the industry. Mary Gaasch, formerly a Program Director at Hammer, is the first employee across both organizations. She was named the Director of Advocacy and Community Relations for the organizations.

So far most employees of both organizations haven’t felt a huge change since the acquisition. Upper-level management of both Hammer and NER have been meeting regularly and taking advice from one another in areas such as Human Resources, Communication, and Development.

Two long-time members of NER’s Board of Directors, Blaine Stephens, and Bob Lockwood, have also joined the Hammer board. Stephens is the NER Board Chair and serves on a variety of boards and mentors organizations in the White Bear Lake area. John Estrem, CEO, is excited for Hammer and NER to bring out the best in each other.

“NER and Hammer are working closely together, learning from each other best practices and procedures,” says John. “These are being applied at each organization so that together, we can provide the best possible service to the people we support.”

WHAT OUR EMPLOYEES SAY ABOUT HAMMER RESIDENCES: Janessa Kohls, Plymouth Colony, Direct Support Professional: “Hammer is an amazing place to work because it embodies its sense of mission in its daily activities. I came to Hammer because I was seeking a place where I could help people with differing abilities and needs to live and to thrive. Hammer has become an oasis because it has afforded me the opportunity and the training to be my best self as I serve the needs of our population.” Siham Hami, Arrive, Direct Support Professional: “Hammer is a place of acceptance and acknowledgment. I've been grateful to have been with Hammer for the past 4 years and it gets hard to imagine working elsewhere. I truly love being a part of the Hammer family!”

GARLAND

Kelly Bosch, Central Office, Program Director: “Hammer is such an amazing place to work because of the staff, flexibility, and rewarding work with the people we support. Hammer really values their staff, and it’s apparent from the big smiles you get when you see them (behind the masks!), or the recognition you receive for the work you do. It’s easy to work for such an amazing group of people, and it’s no surprise we are in our 12th year for “Top Workplace” by the Star Tribune!” Malik Mohamud, Cedarwood, Program Manager: "From the moment you step into a Hammer program until you head home for the day you can feel the family environment. The managers and the directors are so easy to approach, and the HR team does a great job of making you feel heard. A great place to work and feel safe in time of adversity!”

Sherman the Inventor By Cathy Thoma, Director of Volunteer Resources

Sherman Whitcomb is an idea guy, a pun master, an entrepreneur, and an inventor. He is also someone that, since 2003, has been supported by Hammer. When Sherman first asked for help finding a volunteer patent agent, I was intrigued. What idea did he want to patent? “Swappers” was the answer. Swappers began four years ago, when Sherman bought a pair of fuzzy slippers. He liked them, but thought, “Wouldn’t it be cool if you could have different animals on top, that you could swap each day for other animals?” Because, he said, “Some days you feel like a dolphin, and some days you feel like a shark.” Determined to develop this idea, Sherman began to attend the Inventors Networking Club in Hopkins. Once a month, Jim Beckman, Assistant Program Manager at Plymouth Colony where Sherman resides, would drive Sherman to the Eisenhower Building where he would listen to presentations and meet with other inventors on taking his idea to the next level. It was there that he learned he needed to develop a prototype slipper, which he accomplished with the help of Hammer staff and volunteer seamstresses. He then created a marketing video, in which he demonstrated the interchangeable animal slippers. But the one important thing that was missing was a way to protect his idea. Sherman needed to apply for a patent, and he needed some professional assistance to do so. That’s when we began recruiting for a volunteer patent agent. Cathy Gates, formerly of Entegris, was looking for a pro bono project and the pandemic provided the incentive to begin immediately. She wanted to help someone fulfill their dream, and when she saw the advertisement to help an individual from Hammer apply for a patent, she answered the call. Cathy and Sherman began communicating via email and Zoom last August and discussed a strategy for his patent. To make it official as soon as possible, they would approach the application process in

8 | Hammer Discoveries

two different ways. First, an expedited U.S. patent application would be applied for and in addition, a request for a German Utility Model would be submitted. Cathy rewrote the U.S. patent application and hired a professional to create the patent drawings. The documents were then submitted to the U.S. Patent Office. Cathy then reached out to her colleagues in the UK, Jakob Bumke and Kate Hillis, from Greaves Brewster. Jakob and Kate also agreed to work pro bono and with their assistance, a company was hired to translate the patent application into German. The cost for all of this was paid for by Hammer donors through the Quality-of-Life Fund.

Everyone was delighted when, on January 28, 2021, Sherman was awarded his German Utility Model! To celebrate this great achievement, Cathy Gates presented him with a plaque along with a special red lanyard that states, “Inventor,” the very same items awarded to inventors by her company. Our photos show what a very happy day that was for all involved. The story doesn’t end there. Sherman is waiting for the U.S. Patent, and Cathy continues to answer the Examiner’s questions. But as Cathy says, “Whether Sherman receives a U.S. Patent or not, he is still an inventor and should be treated and respected as one.” The next steps in this journey are to secure a licensing attorney and to develop a marketing strategy. While Sherman doesn’t want to own his own business, he would like to receive royalties for his idea. When asked what he would do with the proceeds from that, he said he wanted what so many other people want: a home, a family, and a car. He would also like to leave a legacy for his wife so that she can remain independent. What kind of car would Sherman like? “An Elon Musk Tesla, of course.” Just one amazing inventor supporting another one.

JOINING TOGETHER FOR NEW BEGINNINGS by Mary Gaasch, Director of Advocacy at Hammer Residences and Northeast Residence

M

innesota is the only state in the nation where the legislature sets the rates for staff pay. To raise wages for our Direct Support Professionals, we must have effective relationships with our legislators. That is why I am excited to launch our new Advocacy department. I’m Mary Gaasch and I am the new Director of Advocacy and Community Relations for Hammer and Northeast Residences. I started as a DSP at Hammer almost 25 years ago and have since served in many different roles, most recently as a Program Director. I also serve as Mayor of the City of Lauderdale, a small town on the east side of the metro. My work on behalf of cities has given me the opportunity to build a breadth of relationships across our region and our state. I am excited to use the skills I have built as a mayor to advocate for the people I care most about! One of the most exciting things about this new role is that Staff at Hale it is the first shared role House between Hammer and Northeast Residences as we begin our merger. What a joy it has been to get to know the folks at Northeast Residences and see the great work staff are doing helping people live life to the fullest. NER has a history of great advocacy work, and it is an honor to support them as we work towards better lives for the individuals we support.

The 13th Ave guys and Mary Gaasch go way back!

Mary Gaasch and individuals supported at Hale Home in Oakdale, MN.

My goals for this new department include leading public advocacy efforts for staff, individuals we support, and family members, developing relationships with key public officials at the state, county, and city levels, and revitalizing our selfadvocacy groups. “To change everything, we need everyone,” Naomi Klein once said. There are so many ways that we can build effective relationships with our legislators — a personal note, a call, a visit, a story. I am here to help you advocate for what you are most passionate about, and to support you in building an advocacy toolkit that is a good fit for your life.

DIVERSITY, EQUITY, AND INCLUSION (DEI) COUNCIL by Helena Watson, DEI Council Co-chair

I

n the past, Hammer has approached the difficult issues of diversity, equity, and inclusion in various ways and the DEI Council is an evolution of lessons learned.

The DEI Council promotes values of solidarity and integrity that are supported by Hammer’s leadership and are integral to the comprehensive function of a well-rounded employee. DEI initiatives are not a stand-alone effort, but instead align with Hammer’s values and mission statement and weave seamlessly into all aspects of the Hammer experience — to create a workplace community where everyone feels safe, valued, and respected. The DEI Council exists to advance certain strengths and improve certain shortcomings, always in the best interest of our employees and the individuals we serve. In the coming months, as the work of the DEI Council becomes more visible across Hammer, it is important to know the make-up of the

group and what role it will play in our workplace community. The Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Council’s purpose is to foster a community grounded in equity and inclusion where diversity of thought, identities, and people are safe, respected, and valued. This statement focuses on and affirms the work of the DEI Council moving forward. We will provide a collaborative platform where all voices of our workplace community, including staff, individuals we serve, and administration are actively encouraged to share their perspectives and experiences. We will work with the Board and the administration to support Hammer’s workplace community and be accountable to collectively strengthen and purposefully advance DEI at Hammer. The vital work of the DEI Council has just begun, and with the support of the Board, senior administration, staff, and employees, our entire community will build this trust. This work together may not be without obstacles, differing opinions, and setbacks — some might call that good trouble. But undoubtedly this work together, anchored by our values, will strengthen Hammer’s mission.

by Nicole Hollins, DEI Council Co-chair

T

he DEI Council was officially founded in 2020. This was a new endeavor for Hammer and spearheaded by the Hammer Board of Directors in Hammer's strategic plan in 2019. The board and staff at Hammer recognized that there were inequalities within society, and they wanted to ensure that everyone at Hammer had a voice and that they felt comfortable in their workplace. The DEI council has done several things this year to build upon a more successful year. The council has reached out to staff to find out how the work and living conditions are for their employees. This was done with a survey and several focus groups. These

groups were divided to ensure that everyone felt comfortable speaking to a group of specific peers so they would be able to talk about shared experiences. These focus groups were guided by a facilitator who took notes and moved the discussion toward a particular goal. Once the results are analyzed we will have a better picture of relations at Hammer Residences. The DEI Council has also opened a virtual safe space for employees to leave comments, notes, suggestions, readings, poems, and ideas. This allows our peers to write down whatever is on their minds that they wish to share with the council. This inaugural year has been a learning experience for all of us on the council. We have had to weather some storms, but I do believe that year two is when the flowers will begin to bloom, and all will be able to witness the positive aspects of the DEI council. If you would like to contact the DEI Council, please email Helena.watson@hammer.org or NHollins@ hammer.org. Hammer Discoveries | 11

PIVOT, ADAPT, AND ALWAYS BE CREATIVE By Julia Christianson, Community Life Coordinator

T

hroughout this last year, the Community Life department has been asked a countless number of times how our work has changed with the pandemic of the past year. With the help of our amazing staff, individuals, and supporters, we have continually adapted and found unique ways to support everyone at Hammer and keep them active and involved. Throughout this challenge, we have also stumbled upon a few activities and events we plan to continue in future years! Every month, our department releases a monthly activities catalog. These catalogs include a variety of indoor, outdoor, and virtual activity ideas for the month. In addition, the catalog includes a movieof-the-month section that features food and activities to go along with the movie. Each of our catalogs also includes a “staff segment” that provides relevant information, articles, hobby ideas, and more to promote a healthy work-life balance. In addition to our monthly catalogs,

John Estrem, CEO, calls numbers for Bingo at the Tent Event.

we send out a weekly planner email. It includes activities to attend or try out at home for each day of the week. We include art projects, workout videos, and fun events going on in the area. Continuing with the theme of adapting, our department shifted to providing virtual activities each month so individuals can still participate in some of their favorite activities and see their friends safely. Some of our virtual activities have included Bingo, trivia, yoga, and more. We even hosted our annual Hammer’s Got Talent contest virtually. You can watch each of the performers’ amazing talents on our website: hammer.org/hammers-got-talent-2021

With the rollout of vaccines and warmer weather, we have been able to start up some of our in-person activities with limited capacity. In May, we had another Tent Event in the parking lot of the central office. There was live music, arts and crafts, Bingo, and more for our

individuals to enjoy all weekend long. In addition, we have our annual fishing trip this summer in Brainerd. Those participating will enjoy spending time with friends and, of course, fishing! We will also be able to start up our Hammer Bowling League which will run from June – August on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday evenings. Finally, we are excited to offer Hammer’s Walking Group again this summer. Twice a month, participating individuals will meet at Fish Lake Park and enjoy a beautiful walk together. Everyone at Hammer, including the Community Life department, has pivoted, adapted, and gotten creative in the last few months. We look forward to seeing all our friends in person once again. And for all our fans of the show “Friends,” Ross’s amazing advice to “PIVOT, PIVOT, PIVOT” will continue to be our motto as we navigate these times and continue to provide purposeful activities for our individuals and support our staff.

As we start to be together again, while still being safe, we found simple and inventive ways to have fun!

USING EXISTING RESOURCES TO MAKE SOMETHING NEW AND USEFUL By Soffi Carlson, Program Manager

T

hroughout this unusual past year, homelife and daily needs have been a huge focus for Hammer’s Program Managers. I have been replacing old stuff and focusing on improving the look and efficiency of items within my program. This brought me to collecting a sad stack of bath towels that were not in the best shape for their intended purpose. Around the same time, staff asked me to get bibs to protect clothing during mealtimes…and a light bulb went on. I strive to obtain items that are durable yet reasonably priced. Bibs from online suppliers are not great and they need to be replaced often. But with the stack of old towels in hand, I thought we could repurpose them — which is where the new bibs idea was born!

I contacted the Volunteer Department about this idea, and they put me in touch with a great sewing volunteer, LeeAnn. We discussed materials needed to complete the project, as well as how best to deliver everything in these socially distant times. LeeAnn gave me a couple of prototypes to try out before continuing with the project to be sure they worked as intended. Needless to say, the bibs were great, so I asked LeeAnn to go ahead and make the rest. “Soffi was great to work with. She had a vision and got me everything I needed to make the bibs and specialty face masks for the individuals at Lee Avenue.” —LeeAnn Silver, volunteer seamstress In the end, our house received 18 high-quality bibs from some 14 | Hammer Discoveries

old towels which would have been tossed. The final cost for each bib is around five dollars; a fraction of what they cost online. And more importantly, we’ll have these bibs for several years, saving us a lot of money. We are so grateful for what might seem like a small thing to many, but having these bibs made helps our budget while simultaneously keeping life less messy during mealtimes. Plus, it's a great way to reduce, reuse, and recycle! We couldn’t have accomplished this without our great Hammer volunteer, LeeAnn. Thank you, LeeAnn,

YOU STAYED THE COURSE — THANK YOU by Ellen Timmerman-Borer, Chief Development Officer

I

was sitting in my Hammer office at my desk last week when my phone rang. When I answered, I heard my old friend Kevin say in his distinctive voice, “Hello Ellen Timmerman-Borer.” Kevin and I met in the early 80s and he has been served at Hammer for more than 40 years, since he was a young boy. We have not seen each other for over a year. It was great to reminisce and check in with each other. We talked about our families and yes, our health. Like all of us, Kevin experienced some health challenges this past year. Like most Hammer folks, he was without work and in his Hammer home 24/7. In spite of all of it, his voice sounded cheerful. He was friendly as usual and full of hope. He made my day and I told him so. Kevin has persevered with your support. We are grateful for partners like you: family, volunteers, donors, and community members who give us all hope. You have persevered with us and stayed open to supporting people’s wants and needs even when you may have been struggling yourself. Thank you. With your continued support and guidance, we will put those we serve first and carefully consider their needs as we utilize your gifts now and into the future. Thank you for your trust and investment in our mission.

Left to right: Wayne and Kevin and everyone supported by Hammer thank you for your continued support.

Despite the pandemic, Kevin and his roomies, still found a way to celebrate Wayne's birthday with a lawn party with flamingos. And don’t forget the masks. Now, they are looking forward to a calmer summer, playing games together without masks. They may even get back to the bowling alley and enjoy a fishing trip, all thanks to you and your kind, generous support.

This crazy foursome of Louis Lachner, Al Coleman, David Graff, and Brian Bayerkohler had a great day! One winner was so darn hot he jumped in the pool and swam over to collect his winnings!

On March 20, 2021 the world lost a wonderful person: Claire Hinrichs. She was a volunteer for Hammer for many, many years, always eager to help with her husband, Don, pictured here at a Hammer event. Claire and Don always had a soft spot for Hammer and the people we serve, and asked in lieu of flowers that friends and family consider a donation to Hammer. Although she joked that only the good die young, Claire and Don were among the very best.

Would you like to make a gift to Hammer in honor or memory of someone special? You can use the enclosed envelope, go online, or just send us a note along with your contribution.

Leave a legacy, so your cherished values live on. If you already have a will, a quick phone call to your attorney is all you will need to do to add a charitable gift to Hammer. You can also designate Hammer as a beneficiary of your retirement fund (IRA, 401(k), 403(b)) and life insurance plan. Now is a great time to start planning and to consider supporting the future of individuals living at Hammer. Contact Angela Bernhardt or Ellen TimmermanBorer at 952-473-1261 for more information.

Make a Gift Directly from Your IRA to Hammer. If you are 70½ or older, you can give a gift directly from your IRA to support Hammer Residences. While you will not receive an income-tax deduction, you will not pay taxes on any distributions made directly to Hammer. A gift from your IRA also reduces your taxable income, which could help reduce your Medicare premiums and the amount of Social Security benefits that are taxable. Contact your IRA plan administrator to request that a qualified charitable distribution be made directly to Hammer Residences today.

“Hammer is my favorite organization ever. If I can find some way to support Hammer after I’m gone, I will.” — Denny Newell (pictured, Mary and Denny Newell)
