IT'S ALL ABOUT RELATIONSHIPS

I

recently had a chance to have a Zoom call with a long-time friend. We grew up together and have been friends since the second grade. He moved to the East Coast thirty-five years ago, but we have stayed friends. He is one of those people in my life that no matter how long it has been since we have seen each other, it feels like we were never apart. My life is most definitely better with him as a friend.

PAGE 4-5 Navigating the Path Forward Together

I often say that everything we do at Hammer Residences (Hammer) and Northeast Residence (NER) is done in relationship. We work hard at building and maintaining relationships with employees, the people we support, and their friends and family. We do this because we believe that we do better working together. In a year that has been difficult, one of the great pleasures has been the opportunity to build relationships between our staff members and leaders. This has allowed both organizations to broaden our horizons and deepen our knowledge. While we bring the same passion and commitment to our work, we have slightly different perspectives and experiences that make us better when we work together. In this issue of Discoveries, we celebrate and share this new relationship. You will read stories of staff working together, comparing ideas, and finding solutions together. You will meet staff that go the extra mile to ensure that the people we support live life to the fullest. We also celebrate some of our dedicated volunteers who give of their time and talents to enrich all our lives. As always, we thank our generous supporters who give us the financial support that makes it possible to do what we do, even in these difficult times. We would not be able to do our work without your support. And it is certainly true, we are Better Together!

BOARD SPOTLIGHT

A MEANINGFUL AND FULFILLING WAY TO GIVE BACK by Angela Bernhardt, Director of Major Gifts

M

ichael Drazan has always felt an obligation to help those less fortunate. As a busy executive at Toro, where he was Vice President and General Manager of Worldwide Micro Irrigation, he was financially very supportive of Hammer. You could often find him up front at Reach for Ralph, bidding on auction items, and bringing a lot of energy to the event. One year he even won a BBQ party in his home and invited friends and family over to eat great food and learn more about Hammer. When Michael retired, he knew he wanted to do even more for his favorite nonprofit. He wanted to get involved in the day-to-day work and share his business expertise. He knew he had the ability and experience he could share that would make a difference. Michael had a successful history of delivering strong business financial results for Toro and years of strategic planning and leading innovative solutions. CEO John Estrem and then Board President Bill Young asked Michael to join Hammer’s Board of Directors in 2017, and today he serves as the Board Treasurer and chairs the Finance Committee. His talents have helped Hammer tremendously. From the acquisition of Northeast Residence, to securing a PPP loan at the start of the pandemic, Michael’s financial abilities and business background have been a priceless investment in the lives of individuals living with developmental disabilities. Michael is impressed by the employees of Hammer and how they feel so strongly about ensuring that those served can live life to its fullest. “I enjoy being part of an organization that so genuinely cares for people and seeing the difference every donor dollar makes in the work,” Michael says. “Being the Board Treasurer has been personally fulfilling and meaningful to me. I am happy and honored to be part of the Hammer family.”

Kristin Pyka, Hammer’s Chief Financial Officer, says, “Mike is truly invested in Hammer’s future. I appreciate how he challenges me by asking difficult questions. At the start of the pandemic, Mike was looking forward to determine both immediate needs and how Hammer would come out the other side. He remains focused on Hammer’s financial stability so we can continue to serve the community.”

NAVIGATING THE PATH FORWARD TOGETHER by Barbara Brandt, Director of Communication

W

hen Hammer Residences (Hammer) and Northeast Residence (NER) began the journey of becoming better together in the beginning of 2020, our path was unforged. Without a road map, we took a leap of faith and moved forward, intentionally, steadily, and hopeful. As time went on, relationships flourished and processes organically started falling into place. What we thought might be different, is in fact very much the same. Working together became essential for Brian Kelly, Program Coordinator at Hammer, and Becky Bollinger, Program Compliance Manager at NER, who were each tasked with finding openings in each of their prospective areas. Before partnering, they would separately connect with families and their loved ones in search of a place to call home at their respective locations. With the encouragement and support of Sue Walker, Chief Program Officer at Hammer, Brian and Becky began their partnership by having weekly meetings to collaborate and provide the best fit and location for people looking for a place to call home.

As time went on, each has found that the advantages of sharing resources have been well worth the effort. They can offer a broader range of locations within the Twin Cities with Hammer homes and apartments in the west metro area and NER homes in the east metro area. This allows placement in the area where the person supported can live closer to their family and be in or near their local community, day program, and/or job.

“Meeting each week and working together has helped us streamline our processes,” says Brian Kelly. “We can share information and resources to be more efficient and find the best fit possible for the person.”

Left to right: Becky Bollinger and Brian Kelly have worked together for over a year, but had never met in person. They have been able to built a solid working relationship thanks to Teams.

Left to right: Kate and Becky outside Kate's NER home in White Bear Township.

A great example of this happened earlier this year. Kate, who resided in a Supported Living Services (SLS) apartment, was looking for a place to call home at Hammer that would allow her more social interactions and services. Her case manager contacted Brian Kelly at Hammer. Brian knew there weren’t any current openings, but he was persistent. During one of their weekly meetings, Brian and Becky talked about Kate’s situation. She wanted to find a place that would offer more social interactions. Brian and Becky put their heads together and found an opening at NER’s Cedarwood home for Kate. It just so happened that the on-site staff apartment was no longer needed and Kate could take it if she liked it. Kate really liked the idea of having more connectedness with roommates within the home, while still being able to have her own space to retreat to if she wanted. The initial tour and meet and greet with Kate and her family was held on Zoom and it seemed to go well. Kate decided to take an in-person tour and liked the space. Next, she requested a face-to-face (via Zoom) meet and greet with the women that live at the house, before making her final decision. The women at the house were so welcoming during the meet and greet and the relationship blossomed. The women told staff that they thought Kate would be a great person to live with. Kate decided that she was one hundred percent ready to make the move.

“Kate's journey to a new home is a great example of how sharing resources and information resulted in success. This placement has coalesced beyond all our expectations!” says Becky Bollinger. Discoveries |

MAKING A DIFFERENCE IN PEOPLE'S LIVES GIVES PURPOSE by Lin Curran, Director of Program Operations

M

ichelle Hartmann became a member of the Northeast Residence (NER) team on April 4, 1995. She had been working part-time as a CNA and found it rewarding, but she was looking for more. She saw an ad in a local newspaper and thought she would give it a try. Michelle was hired and started at the Arcade home as a direct support professional. In 1999, she was promoted to the lead direct-support professional. Currently, Michelle is the Program Manager at the Hale home and has worked there since 2008. Michelle works extremely well independently as she is focused and very self-motived. She equally enjoys working as a team whether it be brainstorming, tidying up another’s office, or simply bouncing ideas off each other. It is all important to her. Michelle has always been inspired by her parents, who instilled a strong work ethic in her. She learned that when you work hard you are rewarded in many ways.

“What makes me happy after a day’s work is knowing I made a difference in the life of another. Working with and for others is so much more than a job, it really gives you purpose.” said Michelle.

Michelle with her husband, Wade, at the Walk, Run, and Roll event.

Getting involved is important to Michelle. She mentors new staff members and has also been a member of the Helping Hands team and Project Committee at NER. She enjoys doing paperwork, volunteers to help others get caught or volunteers to put new books together when needed. Michelle tries to always focus on the positive. “I like to celebrate the high times at work and do not focus on the lower too much.” she says. When things get stressful Michelle reminds herself that some things are out of her control, and she works on

creating a work/life balance by prioritizing what needs to get done and what can wait another day. Michelle’s word of advice to anyone coming in new to NER is to be open minded and patient, be flexible, and easily adapt to situations changing. Expect to make mistakes and learn from them. Most of all, be kind! “Hale home is blessed to have employees who are dedicated and have remained at Hale for so many years,” says Michelle. “I encourage everyone to use their skills and creativity while working and share their unique talents.” Michelle has led the Luau Committee for many years. In addition, she has been a member of the Halloween Extravaganza, Walk-Run-Roll, (on site) Project Committee, and the Helping Hands team. Michelle also helped lead the NER garage sale. Thank you, Michelle, for your dedication to the ladies at Hale home and to NER. Everyone enjoying craft projects on a fall afternoon.

Enjoying time with her husband and going on short road trips is how Michelle balances out her work and personal life. She has two fantastic children and two amazing grandsons whom she enjoys spending time with. Michelle has a Betty Boop collection and likes adding to it by shopping at antique stores. Even her license plate on her beloved Dodge Charger gives a nod to Betty Boop.

BUSTER AND HIS "CATIO" by Cathy Thoma, Director of Volunteer Resources

W

e all know what a patio is, right? But have you ever heard of a “catio”? Well, our feline friend, Buster, who lives with the individuals at Queensland, just landed himself one! It began when Program Manager and Assistant Program Manager, Chelsey Fugleberg and Liz Hoskyn, were discussing having a screened-in porch made for Buster. It would give him the opportunity to safely sit outside and watch the birds, next to his friends at Queensland. When the Volunteer department put out the annual call for possible Eagle Scout projects, Chelsey jumped on the catio idea. Andrew Deffner, an Eagle Scout candidate from Troop 3481 in Plymouth, was also intrigued by the project and set to work making this enviable enclosure for the orange kitty. Chelsey and Andrew corresponded for six months via phone calls and emails, and Andrew visited Queensland on Buster different occasions to take measurements and get the lay of the land. During that time, Andrew also decided to make two Adirondack chairs for the individuals at Queensland. He scoured the internet for the perfect catio and chair designs. Andrew then spent his own funds to procure the materials and almost forty hours of his time building and painting the chairs and cat enclosure.

Rosemary and Buster show how he can explore the different levels of the catio.

Buster navigating his way through the catio.

August 20 was the big day, as Andrew used a trailer to bring all the pieces to Queensland and assembled the chairs and catio. After some coaxing and some treats, Buster was in the catio, enjoying his new surroundings! When asked about volunteering for Hammer, Andrew said, “It was fun and rewarding. I got to make something that was needed, and I also got to chat with the people at the house. Eagle Scouts in Troop 3481 have done projects for Hammer before, and it has always gone well.” Thank you, Andrew, for your hard work and dedication! We are grateful for our partnership with the Boy Scouts. Now the individuals at Queensland and Buster the cat will continue to enjoy the view through the autumn months. And the color of the Adirondack chairs? Orange, of course! Just like Buster. 10 |

BUILDING RELATIONSHIPS TO HIRE AND RETAIN GREAT STAFF by Mary Gaasch, Director of Advocacy and Community Relations Believe it or not, your relationship with your legislators helps us hire and retain great staff. I see signs on nearly every business that say, “Now hiring! Join our team!” It’s no secret that Minnesota employers are hungry for workers. Demographic trends mean there are not enough workers to fill job openings. At Hammer Residences and Northeast Residence, we know that our good work depends on the relationship between the individuals we support and the Direct Support Professionals who help them live life to the fullest. But we compete with many other employers who have something we do not: the ability to set higher wages for their employees. Minnesota is the only state in the nation where our rates are set by the legislature. And that is how you can help: Sharing your story and partnering with your loved one to help them share their story is the most powerful tool. We must help our legislators understand our needs.

Here are three easy ways to get the support of your legislator:

Write a personal email or letter.

Meet with your legislator.

Offer a tour.

A personal e-mail or letter is a great way to build a relationship. Thank your legislator for their service and let them know a little bit about your story. Keep it short and offer to be a resource. Always be gracious. No one representative or senator can fix these problems by themselves, and elected officials on both sides of the aisle care deeply about people with disabilities and their families.

This is a good time to schedule a meeting with your legislator or your loved one’s legislator. Many legislators are willing to connect over Zoom, which makes the process very easy. If you are interested in connecting and want some help, I am happy to help set up meetings and attend with you.

Sometimes it really helps legislators to understand the complexities of our work if they can see it in real life. We can help coordinate tours of homes and sapartments as we must follow COVID-19 protocols. We want the individuals who live in the home to welcome this engagement.

AND THE BAND PLAYED ON by Angela Bernhardt, Director of Major Gifts

V

ern Steffel has always loved to make people smile. As the band leader of the Whoopie John Band Orchestra, he played venues across the upper Midwest and as far away as Bavaria. With a focus on old-time music, primarily polka, the band played to standing-room only audiences until 2004 when it came time to hang up their flannel-lined hats. Although Vern joked that he was going to take everything with him when he died, his cousin, Gladys McClendon, urged him to get his affairs in order. Much of the band memorabilia and bandstands were donated to the McCloud County Museum where they are now on display in a new wing. Vern updated his will to leave the majority of his estate to his beloved nieces and nephews. But in talking with Gladys, he expressed an interest in leaving a little something to a group of people that would have an impact on their lives and maybe make them smile.

A young Vern Steffel with his personalized accordion.

Band leader Vern Steffel performing with his band "Whoopee John."

It was Gladys who suggested Hammer to Vern. She has known Sue Walker, Hammer’s Chief Program Officer for 25 years as their career paths have crossed. Vern liked the idea and said, “let’s do it!”

Although Vern didn’t have a connection with Hammer, he had family members with developmental disabilities, and a soft spot for the work done by Hammer. Vern passed away in 2020 at the age of 91 and yet his memory will live on with his gift to Hammer of just over $27,000 going to Hammer’s Area of Greatest Need. With these funds, Hammer can continue to meet the needs of 275 individuals living in our group homes and apartments, who might just do a little dance and the band’s trademark “Wooohooo-hooo-hooo-hooo” call in celebration of Vern.

ANDY'S STORY: LIVING A FULL LIFE AT NORTHEAST RESIDENCE by Brion Curran, Human Resources Specialist and Centralized Scheduling Manager

A

sk Andy how long he’s been with NER, and he’ll say, “forever.”

Andy began his journey with Northeast Residence in 2000 when he moved into a newly opened twin home in Hugo. He now has his own private apartment-style space at a NER home in White Bear Lake. He has also lived in Stacy and Forest Lake. Of all the places he’s called home, living the country life in Stacy was his favorite. When asked what he’d like people to know about him, Andy laughed, “I’m funny!” Boy is that true; when it comes to other hobbies, Andy joked about liking to take things apart…even though he doesn’t intend to put them back together. He is also an animal lover, enjoys bike rides, and watching TV.

As for the plus sides of where Andy lives, he raves about the semi-independent living arrangement in his NER home. It helps him relax and gives him time to type on his computer. Andy said if a friend asked him about living in a group home, “they should find a place like [I have] and stick with it!” He likes this setting because he gets help when he needs it while still having time to himself. In fact, Andy’s proudest accomplishment is moving into his apartment on his own, citing it as an important step in his life. Andy looks forward to work as a highlight each day. “I like going to work, I get out of the house for a few hours.” He admits the paychecks are nice, too, and helps with his shopping habits. At the end of the day, Andy likes to relax while watching his favorite HGTV shows, including “Property Brothers” and “Love It or List It.”

When it comes to living in a group home, Andy is eager to share his thoughts with What’s next for Andy? He would love others and doesn’t shy away from an to learn how to drive a car so it’s easier honest conversation. He understands for him to get around. Someday, Andy the very real staffing shortage we are would like to own a business recycling experiencing not only in our field, but cans and fluorescent light bulbs. across our communities. “I don’t like Andy loves to decorate for Christmas. His advice for new employees? “I would the idea that it’s hard to find staff, but it’s everywhere. If we had more staff, we would be able to do more tell them that Northeast Residence/Hammer Residences is a nice company to work for.” Andy thinks the merger between stuff.” Northeast Residence and Hammer Residences is an ideal Andy described this as a current downfall of living in a group situation because more opportunities for all will open over setting. “It’s difficult for me to live in a group home because time. there feels like less freedom to do the things I want to do.” Andy is thankful he can do things on his own in the community, like A big thanks to Andy for sharing his story! going for walks and shopping.

MARION OWENS — AN UNASSUMING BENEFACTOR by Becky Bollinger, Program Compliance Manager

T

he Owens’s path to Northeast Residence (NER) started years before NER opened. Ken and Marion Owens’ daughter, Nancy, attended North St. Paul Learning Center, located at North Presbyterian Church, in the late ’60s. Through the Learning Center, she met several people who would later be integral to NER, including Pattie Butcher and Sister Jackie Sailer. The Parents' Club,

to NER. Although the Board declined, several individual board members and their families decided to donate. They asked Corrine Schmidt, by then the administrator of NER, how the funds could best be used. She responded that they had started giving something to employees to help them with their schooling. Ken and Marion were very “big into education” as Ken had a PhD in chemistry and Marion had a master's in chemistry from the University of Minnesota. They were happ to have the donation go to helping employees further their education. After several years, Corrine asked if they could make it into a scholarship fund and name it the Ken and Marion Owens Scholarship Fund. In their typical humble way, Ken and Marion pointed out that several others had donated to the fund each year. Eventually, as the instigator of the scholarship money, the Fund was named after Ken and Marion. After Ken passed away in November 2010, Marion continued to donate money for scholarships each year. She thinks Ken would be happy with how many people it’s helped. To date, over 50 employees have received an educational scholarship from this fund.

Ken Owens, instigator of the Ken and Marion Owens Scholarship, and his dog.

with Ken Owens on the Board, and Sister Jackie, envisioned a group home designed to provide temporary placement where children with disabilities could learn life skills like dressing, eating, and toileting. This home became Northeast Residence. When NER began offering Respite Services in the early ’70s (managed by Corrine Schmidt), Nancy would attend as often as she could. Around the time that North St. Paul Learning Center was devolving, NER opened their first “house” at the convent. Corrine asked if Nancy would be interested in moving in, but Marion and Ken were not sure that Nancy could manage the large set of stairs.

“I love Northeast Residence,” says Marion. Nancy’s getting the best care she possibly could. It’s fun donating to the scholarship. The personnel are what makes Northeast so good. From the beginning, it has always been the personnel and the idea of small group homes. I think the best care and training for people who are developmentally disabled has been accomplished!”

When NER began plans to open a second house on Rollingview Court in 1994, Ken and Marion jumped at the chance. Nancy and three of her housemates have been living there ever since. The fourth housemate has been living in the house since 2002. Marion loves that Nancy has bonded with her housemates so well and that they have been a second family for so long. Ken was on the NER Board of Directors from February 1997 until he passed away in November 2010. At one point, Ken suggested that it would be nice for the Board to make a donation 14 |

FABULOUS FRIENDSHIPS AND FUNDRAISING by Ginger Venable, Event and Project Manager

Dedicated volunteers make a huge difference at Hammer by donating their time, talents, and treasures!

J

ean, Jo Ann, Carol, and Donna volunteer almost every Thursday morning at the central office. They volunteered from home during part of COVID-19, but they are back in the office now.

We are thrilled to have them with us in person; they are near and dear to Hammer. Together, they have shared many talents and skills, doing a wide variety of assignments, from cooking Thanksgiving meals, to folding and stuffing envelopes to send to you, our supporters. This friendly group has been volunteering together for so many years that coming to Hammer is one of their favorite things to do together. They take pride in being very efficient, but spend the morning laughing and joking about their lives and some of the wacky projects we give them. They have a great sense of humor. In addition to volunteering every week, they make financial donations to Hammer as well. From cash gifts honoring caregivers to monthly giving, to Give to the Max Day matches and contributions from their IRAs. Giving is at their core. Jean Nelson is a vital member of the Hammer family. Her husband, Tim Nelson, devoted his life to Hammer since 1977 and was appointed CEO in 1998. Tim passed away while CEO of Hammer in 2011. With his sudden death, Jean found

support from their Hammer friends, employees, supporters, and family members. Jean set up the Tim Nelson Legacy Fund and raised over $54,000 for technology and innovation over the past ten years. She was so inspired by the love she felt at Hammer that she decided to start volunteering with the Thursday ladies. When she is not volunteering, Jean likes to garden and spend time with her nine young grandchildren. Jean and Tim made over 400 financial gifts to Hammer since 1978 and have included Hammer in their will. Jo Ann Koltes is a Hammer family member. Her daughter, Elizabeth, moved to Hammer in 1978, when she was 16 years old. “Whenever I meet someone with a disability, I always say, ‘You have to check out Hammer!’ It's been a god-send for our entire family, and our daughter, Liz.” In addition to volunteering in the central office, Jo Ann has hosted spaghetti dinners for Hammer. She has volunteered at Hammer’s Family Day Picnic for 29 years, bringing her entire extended family to the event over the years. She is an active volunteer, donor, and gives monthly in memory of her husband, Bob, and daughter, Becky. Jo Ann has volunteered since 1978 and made 268 gifts to Hammer. She trusts Hammer to put the money where it is needed the most. “When my daughter, Becky Gromek, suddenly passed away, her husband, Donny, and I agreed that in lieu of flowers, memorials would be requested to Hammer. Becky

the need for financial support from families like hers is great. Donors’ dollars are key to Hammer’s mission of supporting individuals with developmental disabilities to live their lives to the fullest. When Carol was taking care of her estate plans, she knew she wanted to include Hammer in her will. Carol’s estate gift will go to Hammer’s Area of Greatest Need, meaning it will be put to good use, immediately. Donna Gorski is the self-proclaimed bossy one, using her organizational skills to keep the group on task. Donna is neighbors with Jo Ann and Carol. She has volunteered since 2008, after hearing such great things about Hammer.

Donna, Carol, Jean, and Jo Ann (clockwise) assembled 400 DSP Appreciation gifts.

was always very kind, loving, and generous, and Hammer has been a big part of her legacy,” says Jo Ann. To date, more than 90 gifts of all sizes have been received in memory of Becky, a testimony to the love so many had for her and her selfless commitment to others. Jo Ann’s ninth grandchild is on the way this winter. In addition to volunteering at Hammer, Jo Ann volunteers at her church and CEAP, but her heart is with Hammer. Carol Gottschalk is Jo Ann’s sister-in-law and neighbor. She has volunteered at Hammer since 1993. Carol says, “I just love coming to Hammer! The staff is so caring. We get hugs and they are always so happy we are here. Everyone from the CEO on down stops by to check in with a greeting. We’d do anything for you guys!”… and she is the self-proclaimed grumpy one! Carol has stepped up again and again, however and whenever she is needed. From making birthday cards for everyone at Hammer, to baking cookies for Give to the Max Day, to serving Thanksgiving meals, Carol has developed deep connections with the people served at Hammer. Carol has witnessed the decades of support, her niece, Elizabeth has received from caregivers, volunteers, and donors. She knows that in addition to her volunteer work,

In addition to being on the Thursday morning team she has volunteered in the nursing department. Donna helped the nursing department move online by organizing, scanning, and filing years’ worth of medical records. Her contribution of time and organizational skills saved our nursing team hundreds of hours. In addition to volunteering, Donna makes financial gifts on a regular basis. When she is not volunteering at Hammer, Donna loves to travel, especially with her grandkids, and often shares stories of her travel when she returns to Hammer to volunteer. During one of their recent Thursday mornings at Hammer, the ladies shared their feelings about giving their time, talents, and treasures to Hammer. “We’ve volunteered and donated to a variety of places in our lives and Hammer is by far the most gratifying.” — The Thursday Ladies We have seen many changes over the years, but we know that Hammer does their very best to put the people they serve first. The staff is super and in addition to our financial donations, we’re proud to free up staff time for more important work!” These “fabulous four ladies” give in so many ways and it is hard to put into words the impact they have made on Hammer and all the individuals they have served throughout their lifetime commitment. Thank you, Jean, Jo Ann, Carol, and Donna! The Thursday ladies have a combined 7,000 hours volunteering for Hammer!

Make a gift directly from your IRA to Hammer. If you are age 70½ or older, you can give a gift directly from your IRA to support Hammer Residences. While you will not receive an income-tax deduction, you will not pay taxes on any distributions made directly to Hammer. A gift from your IRA also reduces your taxable income, which could help reduce your Medicare premiums and the amount of Social Security benefits that are taxable. You can contact your IRA plan administrator to request that a qualified charitable distribution be made directly to Hammer Residences today.
