Renmin University of China is one of the nation’s preeminent research institutions. It embraces not only the nation’s history but also its vision of the future. The University’s three campuses reflect this link to past, present and future. Its logo embodies the University’s commitment not only to its students and community but also represents a commitment to the nation at large.

The University’s goals, aspirations and vision should be evident in the physical place of the campus. The importance of people and how they experience the campus environment should be a primary focus of investments in its facilities and grounds. The pages that follow offer a big idea for campus improvements and a rationale for envisioning the campus of the future.

校园(CAMPUS) 一词源于拉丁语，意为“之间的场地”。在现代语汇中，大学校园代表着一个可以进行沉思和冥想的安全场所，并且通过学生社区，帮助学生从青春期到成年的转变。中国人民大学的校园应该彰显“校园”一词的这一真实意义，体现它所代表的文化遗产和愿望。本着这一精神，我们希望大学考虑下列问题： The term campus comes from the Latin meaning, “the field in between.” In modern vernacular, university campuses represent places of safety for repose and contemplation that, through community, facilitate the path from adolescence to adulthood. At Renmin the existing campus should be celebrated in the true meaning of the word and embody the heritage and aspirations it represents. In the spirit of this conversation we pose the following questions for the University to consider:

有没有什么方式能够通过将中心景观的设计语言延伸到周边，从而将校园的教学中心区还原成人体尺度？如何能够建构一个大的框架，从而指导校园长期的、具有前瞻性的发展目标，即成为中国最美丽的校园？ Is there a way to return the academic core of campus to people and to the scale of people by extending the vocabulary of the open spaces and gardens to the spaces in between?

Is there a larger framework to guide development to accomplish long-term and visionary goals of the institution to be the most beautiful in all of China?

The ‘Peoples Walk’ is a metaphor for a student’s journey while on campus, a symbol of the significance of the persons contribution to the larger community. It could become a wayfinding system that orients and informs, as a learning landscape that remindes the user of the University’s mission while educating the use about stewardship of the people’s resources.

Can we redistribute vehicular cirulation to create a pedestrian zone for the people’s walk? 假如我们让这个区域行人优先会是什么样呢？通过选择性地封闭部分道路，以及重新设计优先权的方式将能出入这个区域的车辆限制在必须的服务性、维修性及紧急性车辆，从而形成校园的行人专用区。 What if we treat the pedestrian as the priority in this district? Formalize a pedestrian district of the campus by selective closure of roads and redesign of right of ways and limit vehicular access to necessary service, maintenance and emergency vehicles.

改变校园 T RA N S FORMING CAMPUS 初期阶段 inital phase 一期工程的“人民步道”将起始与东门，一直到图书馆西馆。未来阶段它将通过整个校园，并于具有历史性的教学中心区紧密结合。所有能让人们联想到汽车的基础设施（路牙、道床、停靠点等等）都应该尽可能地被移除，取而代之的是人体尺度的景观小品。建筑物的入口应该设计成有一个“过渡区”，以彰显从内到外的过渡，并且为能够强化社区感的学生之间的交互与活动提供空间。

The first phase of the walk should begin at the East Gate and run to the old west library. Future phases should move through the balance of the campus unifying it with the historic academic core. When ever possible the reminders of the automobile infrastructure (curbs, road bed, drop inlets, etc.) should be removed and replaced with people scaled and attractive site furnishings. Entries to buildings should celebrate the transition from inside to out and reserve space for social interactions and encounters that reinforce community. 1 东门 EAST GATE

How can patterns found at the historic campus and in the University’s art collection be used to link all three campuses?

The patterns on these pages are found on artifacts in the University’s art museum and on buildings of the historic campus. One way to link all three campus sites would be to adapt these patterns for use in building screens / scrim, paving patterns, site furniture, etched or stained glass, and in new building construction. Recommendations about where to use these patterns are provided on each of the project pages that follow.

The architectural renovation strategies discussed previously in have drawn bythe theproposal existing gate on a design vocabulary taken directly from the University’s art collection and from detailing vignettes found on the historic campus. We believe these elements can be key in finding unity among the three campus sites in a variety of ways including architectural and landscape features. We anticipate exploring these possibiliies with you in the future.

INTERMEDIATE PLAN

Beyond the initial and continuing phases of architectural and landscape improvements, completion of the People’s Walk to the West Gate will be the priority. Predominantly consisting of landscape enhancements, the extended People’s Walk will connect the Renmin campus east to west; gate to gate. Several roads may be taken off-line in this time period consistent with the desire for a car-free pedestrian zone. A consistent palette of landscape materials and architectural elements will provide a unique identity and continuity for the People’s Walk. 新的景观设计将继续校园已有的传统，即以水体、座椅、公共艺术为特色的广场和庭院。

LONG RANGE PLAN

The final phase will complete road closures to create a contiguous pedestrian zone extending from Qiu Shi Park on the east to Century Park on the west and from the north side of the Student Center to south of the Central Green. Specific recommendations include: 1 Demolition and relocation of the utilities plant: This will allow continuous traffic flow from the west gate through to the main north-south street east of the new library. This will allow the closure of the street leading to the library from the south and complete the intent of the People’s Walk with a connected pedestrian zone.

A new continuous landscaped plaza along the south side of the library will emphasize its civic importance while providing needed student space for gatherings.

New high density housing is proposed on the site of the existing staff housing west of the library. These buildings would have a mix of uses at the ground level appropriate to needs at that time: retail, classroom or office.

Another housing or academic tower at the west end of campus adjacent to the sports center occupies an existing surface parking lot.

Collaborative learning spaces and high tech classrooms (“tech towers”) are shown fronting the Humanities Building and the west side of the Qiu Shi Building. These spaces will transcend disciplines and bring lateral thinking to problem based exercises.

A glass façade addition combining the old gym and the dining center will increase flexibility for both buildings. The glass façade will allow natural light and additional seating capacity for the dining center and create a flexible multipurpose area for the old gym filled with natural light facing the Qiu Shi Park.

The ultimate plan explores the need for more and better facilities in a limited land resource environment. Opportunistic infill sites will house new facilities that increase campus density while improving the open space network. Creating a coherent, connected and aesthetically pleasing network of civic space will aid in campus orientation, identity, safety and loyalty among campus users.
