Prepare yourself by: • Finding out about the company

• Writing down questions you want to ask about the work and the company • Getting things straight in your own mind on what you have to offer the company • Practising calling attention to your positive sides, what you can do and what you want to achieve • Practising answering difficult and tricky questions • Finding out where the place of work is and how to get there

Below are a number of interview questions that you might be asked when being interviewed for a job: Who are you? Why did you apply for this particular job? Why should we hire you? · Tell us a bit about yourself. What will we be getting if we employ you? · What was it that persuaded you to apply for this particular position? · Why do you think this job would interest you and suit you? · What do you think are the most important requirements for doing this job? · Why should we hire you? · Your paperwork seems to indicate that you might be overqualified for the job - what are your views? · What can you bring to our company? · When you start working for us?

Education/training/choice of profession/professional experience · Why did you train for………? · If you had to start all over again, what field would you train in? · What work have you done previously?


· Why did you leave your last job/s? · Which bits of your last jobs did you dislike the most? · What merits have your previous jobs given you for this job? · What experience do you have that you could benefit from in this job? · Explain why you have a gap in your CV. · How would you describe your current/last job? · What do/did you enjoy most about your current/last job?

Your ideal workplace · Can you describe your ideal workplace? (work organisation, working environment, colleagues) · Describe what makes a good manager. · Are you a good leader? Give examples. · How do you make decisions? · What are you missing at present to allow you to take on a higher position? · What two things have you done at your last job which you are most pleased with? · Would you like to influence decisions? · What backup do you require before you make a decision? · What is the most important thing you need to make you feel happy in your work? · What qualities in your colleagues do you feel are most important?

Stress, conflict and cooperation · How do you react to/deal with stress/time pressure? · How do you react when faced with new tasks? What do you do to deal with them? · Tell us about a conflict you have faced at work. (How did you deal with it? What did you learn?) · How did you get on working with your former colleagues/managers? · Have you ever found it difficult to work with anyone? Why? · Do you prefer working alone, or as part of a team? · What role do you adopt in a team?


· How do you react when a task does not go the way you planned? · In which situations do you feel stressed? · How do you react to praise? · Do you often praise others?

Strengths and weaknesses · What are your strengths and weaknesses in your work? · What do you think you need to improve on? · What do people usually criticise you for? · How do you think your manager would describe your work? Why · How patient are you when working with fine detail? · What kind of people confide in you? · What annoys you? What upsets you? What makes you happy?

Language skills · How is your spoken and written English, German, French? (for example) · How well do you express yourself in writing/when talking to people? · What have you written/had published? · In what contexts have you spoken in front of (large) groups of people? · Can you negotiate in a foreign language? · Can you explain a complicated problem in a way that people can understand?

Family, leisure time, health and sick leave · Describe your family. · Would you (and your family) consider moving house if your job so demands? · What would working irregular hours entail for you?


· Describe what you do in your free time. · Are you involved in activities outside the workplace? · How often were you absent from your previous job? · Can you describe your childhood briefly?

Salary · What kind of salary are you looking for? · What kind of salary do you have at the moment? Do you think you are being given the "right" pay for the work you do?

Referees · We have no referees listed for you, can you give us some names? · What do you think your referees would tell us about you (both positive and negative comments), and why did you choose them to give you references?

The future · What are your aims and ambitions for the future? · Where do you think you will be in three/five years' time in your private and professional life?
