WHY HANDI GUIDES

With that same concept in mind, my associates and I have created a visitor resource like no other available here on Maui - A guide which lists activities by area, companies who provide the activity and their ability to accommodate those who with physical limitations.

GAMMIE HOMECARE GAMMIE

Where else can you find activities and the companies who provide them by simply using a convenient Table of Contents from A-Z? With Handi Guides™, satisfaction of your family’s activity needs is right at your fingertips! You don’t have to flip aimlessly through magazine advertisements, only to discover at the end that you found nothing of interest for you or your family; Handi Guides™ provides you with the companies’ name, phone numbers, websites, locations of activities and the companies’ abilities to accommodate physical limitations. We don’t receive commissions for activities; we ask only that you try to get a discount for yourself by booking directly by phone or online and mentioning to the activity operator that you found them in Handi Guides™.

On The Cover Fine-art photographer Scott Mead literally grew up with a camera in hand and lavatoughened feet shooting the wonderment of Hawaii since 1975. His images have appeared in Outdoor Photographer, Popular Photography, Digital Trends, Hawaii Magazine, Maui No Ka Oi, Motor Trend, Automotive Traveler, Auto Week, CAR, and Truck Trend magazines. He is the author of the Magic of Maui – Ka Makahehi O Maui, and has contributed to numerous books and online magazines. As a Hahnemühle artist in resident and Certified Studio, Mead is a virtuoso at the use and manipulation of light, as he carefully selects his subjects and locations to optimize the ever-changing luminosity and atmospheric conditions that the islands present. Tempered by patience and uncanny timing, his images depict an intense variation of light, fluidity and motion, capturing the pure essence and mana of Hawai’i through the lens. Look for his photography classes on page 27 and his one day NANPA Road Show at MACC on October 11. Scott can be found most Thursday & Saturday mornings at Wailea Beach Marriott Resort & Spa as an Artist in Residence, as well as Monday’s at the Grand Wailea Resort.

Visit www.scottmeadphotography.com. Make sure you tell him you saw him in Handi Guides™!! Page 11

Paia

How to see the Most

Paia became a popular residential community in the early 1880’s after Alexander and Baldwin Company opened the first sugar mill on the island. The 1950’s brought a decline in the sugar industry, directly affecting the small beach town. In the 60’s Paia caught the eye of the Hippie generation with its picturesque beaches and island beauty. Soon new businesses opened and the population started to grow once again. In the 70’s a new form of surfing, called Windsurfing swept the nation. Ho’okipa Beach, located a couple of miles east of Paia, quickly became the most photographed windsurfing spot on earth with its afternoon trades blowing an average of 20-22 knots, year round. Grab your lunch and watch as the world’s top windsurfers & kiteboarders put on a show for all to see.

SAFE • EASY • FUN • AIR CONDITIONED

1. Stay in shallow water for more life and color. The deeper you go the less there is to see. 2. We keep moving. If you anchor it can get boring. 3. See out both sides easily. Turtles and other sea creatures are very unpredictable. 4. Watch the divers. Cool critters visit your personal window in the hands of our divers. 5. Reefdancer tours include an experienced diver in the cabin with you to tell you about all the sights. 6. Get a window seat. Reefdancer sells only 34 seats per tour – each one is a front row seat!

Makawao Makawao is a small town located on the slopes of Haleakala, and is commonly referred to as the hub of the “upcountry”. Makawao’s cattle herding history dates back to the early 1800’s; however the feel of the old western town is alive today with its cowboy themed restaurants and shops. Makawao is also home to many artists, art studios and galleries and is considered the art center of Hawaii. The 4th of July is celebrated by rodeos in this small upcountry town.

Kahanu Garden

Set on a rugged lava coast overlooking the scenic Pacific Ocean is Kahanu Garden and the home of Pi`ilanihale Heiau. Step back in time and experience the unspoiled beauty of the area while taking a leisurely tour of this extraordinary ethno botanical garden and its collections of Hawai`ian and Pacific plants used for food, building, clothing, medicine and religion. See the diverse varieties of breadfruit, taro, banana, sugarcane and others all within Hawai`i’s largest remaining native Pandanus forest. The Pi`ilanihale Heiau, a place of worship and literally translates to “House of Pi`ilani”. This sacred lava-stone temple is named for Maui’s beloved chief who ruled during the 16th century. Visitors are asked to respect the sacredness of this site and view from designated areas within the garden. The Kahanu Garden has both guided and self-guided tours available. Self-guided tours generally run Monday – Friday 10am – 2pm ($10). Guided Tours are on Saturday from 10am – noon ($25) and reservations are required at www.ntbg.org. Kahanu Garden has had all types of visitors including those in wheelchairs and walkers; it is up to the individual’s abilities. Directions: Driving towards Hana on Hana Highway (360) look for Mile Marker #31. Just past Mile Marker turn toward the ocean (north) onto `Ulaino Road. Drive approximately 1 ½ miles, after crossing the streambed you will find Kahanu Garden on the right hand side. Please stop at the visitor’s kiosk to check in. Page 29

Endemic Species Hawaii By: Larissa Treese Hawai`i is the most remote group of islands in the world, formed by volcanic activity over 70 million years ago. The nearest continental mass is more than 2,400 miles away, creating a unique setting and opportunity to see animals you will not see anywhere else in the world. This setting offers the highest percentage of endemic species, which means they are found only in that specific area and nowhere else in the world. When an animal is restricted to one area, over millions of years they evolve with the need to survive in the ecosystem, whether it is food source, habitat or temperature changes. There are thousands of endemic species found only in Hawai`i, including flowering plants, birds, ferns, insects and marine life. Currently there is approximately 23% of the fish and 20% of coral that is endemic to the Hawai`ian Islands; this is surprising compared to those percentages of other areas that are more diverse than Hawaii. While out in the ocean and taking in the many colors and shapes, you may be able to identify some unique fish, like the Hawai`ian Dascyllus swimming in and out of coral heads or anemones. A true sign of a healthy reef is the presence of the Hawai`ian Cleaner Wrasse, a dynamic little fish in bold yellow, blue/purple and black colors. You can see it dancing from fish to turtles, all of which will display signs of needing to be cleaned. The established cleaning stations can be viewed in many areas, with the cleaner wrasse helping to get dead scales or parasites off appreciative members. Koa wood is used to make beautiful sculptures, instruments and furniture. It is known to be one of the strongest of woods, the trees growing over 100 feet tall and taking more than 50 years to mature. In the Hawai`ian culture it has been a significant part of the voyaging tradition, being used to make large double-hulled canoes for deep-sea expeditions. The Hawai`ian Monk Seal is the only sea mammal and one of just two mammals endemic to Hawai`i, the other being the hoary bat. Unfortunately, the Monk Seal is one of the most endangered animal species in the world. Its Hawai`ian name is ilio-holo-i-ka-uaua, meaning the dog that runs in rough seas, and is Hawai`i’s official state mammal. With an estimated 1,100 seals left, this protected species can be seen sunbathing and playing in shallow waters but it is important to not approach them. We do not want them to be accustomed to human interaction, which can interfere with their survival. Other threats are entanglement, habitat loss and disease. If you do have the chance to see one, enjoy the beauty from afar and report details to 808-292-2372. There is so much diversity and many distinct ecosystems to be enjoyed within the Hawai`ian islands, attracting people from all over the world to enjoy it. It is a rare experience to observe, respect and relish species not found anywhere else in the world! All activities listed are for informational purposes only. Activity participation is entirely up to the activity operator.

SURF & STAND-UP LESSONS & RENTALS • KAYAKS

In Maui By: Larissa Treese

When you close your eyes and picture paradise, you probably imagine every color such as bright greens, oranges, yellows and blues. Now, picture a beach in paradise or under the ocean’s surface, ever think you would see more than a few shades of blue? Welcome to Maui! Maui offers some of the best ocean experiences all year round. Whether it is from the shore, boat or sky, you can observe and immerse yourself in as much or as little as you would like. Snorkeling is one of the best ways to participate in another world; it is one that does not wait for you, but is always willing to share its beauty. From the time you put your foot in the water, to the time you exit you are amongst the homes of thousands of unique individuals all who live in their well-balanced society. Enter smoothly and slowly and enjoy all they have to offer during your snorkel. Sometimes they are aware of your presence, but the thing to remember is always take a moment and never be in a hurry; those who think they have somewhere they need to go or be will not appreciate the journey along the way.

Paddle slowly, look left, right and peacefully float over all the little habitats. They don’t mind your presence, and they will usually show themselves more when there is minimal splashing. Take note of the octopus that blends in with the rockwork, watch how they change texture and color in less than a second. Don’t miss the eel that needs to temporarily leave its home to hunt elsewhere. Quick, don’t miss the turtle that is grazing on algae or resting within the reef. Remember always, you are a visitor in a rich ecosystem and to ensure that every snorkeler after you can experience their wonderful world, please follow the rules of the ocean and the tips we have provided below and remember, always enjoy & respect the natural beauty that the Hawaiian waters has to offer!

Tips to remember when entering the ocean: • There is safety in numbers • ALWAYS rinse off sun tanning oils • Do not go swimming after a storm, rain, or when the waters are choppy • Avoid swimming near spear fishermen. Where there are fish, there are bigger fish • Do not swim where there is runoff • Avoid swimming at dusk and dawn, there are behavior changes in certain predator fish • Do not bring outside food. It can cause a feeding frenzy and disrupt the natural balance of their environment • Never step on any rock as it is most likely is someone’s home • REMEMBER HARASSING SEA TURTLES IS PUNISHABLE BY LAW • LEAVE ONLY FOOTPRINTS IN THE SAND, NOT TRASH All activities listed are for informational purposes only. Activity participation is entirely up to the activity operator.

Lahaina

Polynesian settlers date back to around 450 A.D. In 1802 King Kamehameha made Lahaina the capital of his Hawaiian Island kingdom. In 1850 the capital was relocated to Honolulu. 1800’s Lahaina was a major whaling port and fishing town. Along with the sailors, the missionaries were also attracted to the area, also known as Lele, “Land of Relentless Sun”. Eventually, by 1853, the missionaries with their schools, printing press and newly constructed prison had tamed the sailors’ ways. In 1873, in celebration of the 50th anniversary of the first Christian Mission, the now famous Banyan Tree was planted by the sheriff of the old Lahaina Town, William Owen Smith. PROTECTING OUR OCEANS’ REEFS

Having the privilege to swim in our oceans among our most beautiful creatures is just that, a privilege. Too many, ignore the requests of the many scientists and marine biologists who spend their lives studying the impact of humans on our delicate oceans. Ignorance is not bliss when it comes to the destruction of these delicate ecosystems whose survival depends largely on us.

These incredible ecosystems produce nearly $800 million in gross annual revenue for the state of Hawaii and are considered one of the most valuable assets of the Tourism and Hospitality sectors. Simply, knowing about the living coral reefs will help you while you are enjoying the islands, to do your part to help preserve the many beautiful living organisms that call our coral reefs home.

By: Larissa Treese

Lana’i, once known as the “Pineapple Island” for its island-wide pineapple plantation, is the smallest inhabited Hawaiian island at just over 140 square miles, and is located just 9 miles from the shores of Maui. Lana’i is not overly developed; in fact, the entire island houses just over 3,000 residents, living for the most part in the main town on the island aptly named Lana’i City. With only 30 miles of paved roads, no stop lights and just a handful of hotels, B&B’s and resorts; Lana’i is an excellent day, overnight or even longer adventure destination! Ninety eight percent of the island is owned by Larry Ellison (CEO of Oracle) and two percent by the State of Hawaii. Lana’i is easily reachable via a short 40-minute ferry ride with Expeditions, which runs several round trips daily from Lahaina and offers package deals for golf, horseback riding, off- road adventures and more (see page 33). It does not take long to see the beauty of Lana’i with its diverse colorful landscape, amazing cliffs, ocean views and the spinner dolphins* playfully swimming offshore. There are many ways to spend your time on Lana’i; you can hike, swim, rent a 4-wheel drive, golf, kayak, shoot archery or clay pigeons, or just spend the day lying on the sands of Manele Bay Beach located just a short walk or taxi/shuttle from the ferry terminal. There are many hikes in the surrounding area, including Fisherman’s Trail which starts just west of the beach in front of the Four Seasons. The trail follows along the coast, offering spectacular views, tide pools, blowholes and historical sites. There is no shade or drinking water along the trail so make sure you have proper walking shoes, sun coverage & plenty of water. One of the most photographed areas on the island is located 45 minutes from Lana’i City and is called the rock garden Keahiakawelo or Garden of the Gods. The road is very bumpy and dusty and you will be wearing the color of the soil (red) by the time you are done! Many compare this landscape, with its red boulders and rock towers, to the moon - definitely a site to be seen. About 30 minutes passed the Garden of the Gods and at the end of the road there is a beautiful beach called Polihua Beach, a beautiful 2-mile stretch great for sunbathing, strolling and enjoying the views. It is not recommended to swim here due to the very strong currents. Make sure you allow enough time to get back to the ferry if you are only on Lana’i for a day or you may be forced to spend a night at one of the local accommodations in the area! According to Hawai`ian stories, there was a contest between two priests (kahuna), one from Lana’i and the other from Molokai. The one who could keep a fire burning on his island longest would win a reward of great wealth. The Lana’i kahuna used all the available vegetation to keep his fire burning, which is why this area is so barren to this day. For those of you World War II enthusiasts, you can view an old oil tanker from the 1940’s at Kaiolohia, or Shipwreck Beach, which is a half-hour north of Lana’i City by 4-wheel drive, and while swimming is not recommended here as well, if you travel approximately 200 yards past the Shipwreck Beach sign, you can also view petroglyphs, or rock engravings. With all that Lana’i has to offer, it’s easy to enjoy one day or several on the island, depending on your interest and time allowed. Sharing the historical sights and charm of this mostly untouched island can certainly add to your visit to the Hawai`ian Islands. * Spinner Dolphins - while enticing to swim or paddle up to, please enjoy the escapades of the Spinner Dolphins or any sea life from over 50 yards away, as they are protected under the Marine Mammal Protection Act.

HAWAIIAN ISLANDS HUMPBACK WHALE NATIONAL MARINE SANCTUARY (Mon – Fri 10am – 3pm) The recently renovated sanctuary visitor center is the ideal location to learn about the marine environment, the efforts of NOAA, the State of Hawaii, and others to protect humpback whales, monk seals, sea turtles and coral reefs. The sanctuary’s temporary exhibits tell the story of the marine animals and the coral reefs found throughout the Hawaiian Islands, and how the native Hawaiians lived in harmony with those marine animals and reefs. During the whale season you may even see a humpback whale breaching off the shore in the waters outside the sanctuary! Address: 726 S. Kihei Road, Kihei | (808) 879-2818 | www.humpbackwhale.noaa.gov/

• Stream, falls and natural pools in Hawaii should be assumed are affected with Leptospirosis and Giardia. One should not swim in the water with open cuts or wounds. • When snorkeling or swimming NEVER step on coral (or what you may think are rocks) in any way, you will kill the coral and every living organism that survives and feeds off that coral. • The only way our beaches and parks can remain beautiful and enjoyable, is for everyone to participate by cleaning up after themselves. Remove your trash and protect the environment. • Most beaches in Hawaii are NOT wheelchair or walker accessible. Some have paved sidewalks leading to the sand; others may have hard packed grass that wheelchairs may be able to navigate over. • All sea life in Hawaii is protected; laws are enforced. Do NOT touch, harass or feed any sea life you may encounter in the ocean or on the shore. Page 72
