Finding Activities on Maui FOR THOSE WITH PHYSICAL LIMITATIONS Handi Guides™ is trying to help eliminate the situation where a family member who has a physical limitation gets left behind while the rest of the family goes on an adventure. While preparing this guide we heard too many times “when we went to Maui we had to leave Aunt Ruth at the condo while we did this activity”. Handi Guides™ has worked hard at locating activities that may be able to accommodate someone with a particular physical limitation, and we have to say that we were very impressed with the way most activity companies will go out of their way to try and accommodate. Of course, there are activities that will never be able to accommodate physical limitations, but there are plenty that can! One of the biggest surprises we found was the sunrise and bicycling tours down the Haleakala volcano. How many people would believe that someone in a wheelchair would be able to participate in this type of an activity? I would say not very many! The surprise is that they can, as long as they, or their family members, can help assist them into and out of the van; they too can go up and enjoy the same sunrise and take the same pictures! There are a number of activity companies offering this type of activity, and many others that people with physical limitations can enjoy; simply make sure you check the activity restrictions in each listing and compare that with the key/legend located every few pages.

ON THE

COVER Fine-art photographer, Scott Mead, literally grew up with a camera in hand and lava-toughened feet, shooting the wonderment of Hawaii since 1975. His images have appeared in Outdoor Photographer, Popular Photography, Digital Trends, Hawaii Magazine, Maui No Ka Oi, Motor Trend, Automotive Traveler, Auto Week, CAR, and Truck Trend magazines. He is the author of The Magic of Maui - Ka Makahehi o Maui, and has contributed to numerous books and online magazines.A Hahnemüle artist in residence and Certified Studio, Mead is a virtuoso at the use and manipulation of light, as he carefully selects his subjects and locations to optimize the ever-changing luminosity and atmospheric conditions that the Islands present. Tempered by patience and uncanny timing, his images depict an intense variation of light, fluidity and motion, capturing the pure essence and mana of Hawai’i through the lens. On March 1, 2014, Scott will be hosting his 4th annual Day with the Whales group workshop. He also holds private 1:1 workshops on demand. For more information, visit www.scottmeadphotography.com

Humpback Whales By: Larissa Treese

Every year starting in October through the months of April or May, the Hawaiian Islands will be visited by one of the most majestic creatures of the sea. Whether you call them humpback whales, gentle giants or kohola (their Hawaiian name), they bring excitement and awe to visitors and kama’aina alike. Every year the humpback whale makes their 3,500+ mile journey from the cold waters of Alaska to Hawaii, using the warmth and protection of the islands to mate and give birth. Humpback whales can reach up to 60 feet long with the females slightly larger than the males and generally weigh one ton per foot! The female will give birth every second or third year, having a gestation period of 10-12 months. She will stay with her calf for another year teaching the behaviors that we all love to watch. During this time, the calf will start learning graceful acrobatics, even despite their enormous size…..from breaching, tail or pectoral slapping, head thrusts and singing. Although the meanings of their behaviors may be unclear to us, they are most likely communicating, viewing above the surface, courtship or regulating their body temperature. Typically, the best time to view the humpback whales in Hawaii are in February and March when the females are either traveling with an escort male, within competition pods or teaching their young calf their signature moves. Humpbacks spend over 90% of their lives under water, so to be able to view them is exceptional. We still have so much to learn about these astounding mammals, and by adding them to the endangered species list, and with the continued efforts to protect these “gentle giants”, the North Pacific population has increased to over 20,000 since 1970. This is a huge improvement from 1400 in the ‘70’s. They still are being threatened by fishing line entanglement, boat strikes, harassment and habitat impacts; we should all want to do our best to take ourselves and human effects off that list! Book a whale watching cruise, go kayaking or paddle boarding while here on Maui, or you can hear their haunting songs while snorkeling or diving.

Paia

Paia became a popular residential community in the early 1880’s after Alexander and Baldwin Company opened the first sugar mill on the island. The 1950’s brought a decline in the sugar industry, directly affecting the small beach town. In the 60’s Paia caught the eye of the Hippie generation with its picturesque beaches and island beauty. Soon new businesses opened and the population started to grow once again. In the 70’s a new form of surfing, called Windsurfing swept the nation. Ho’okipa Beach, located a couple of miles east of Paia, quickly became the most photographed windsurfing spot on earth with its afternoon trades blowing an average of 20-22 knots, year round. Grab your lunch and watch as the world’s top windsurfers & kiteboarders put on a show for all to see.

Ride The

REEFDANCER

SAFE • EASY • FUN • AIR CONDITIONED

1. Stay in shallow water for more life and color. The deeper you go the less there is to see. 2. We keep moving. If you anchor it can get boring. 3. See out both sides easily. Turtles and other sea creatures are very unpredictable. 4. Watch the divers. Cool critters visit your personal window in the hands of our divers. 5. Reefdancer tours include an experienced diver in the cabin with you to tell you about all the sights. 6. Get a window seat. Reefdancer sells only 34 seats per tour – each one is a front row seat!

Makawao is a small town located on the slopes of Haleakala, and is commonly referred to as the hub of the “upcountry”. Makawao’s cattle herding history dates back to the early 1800’s; however the feel of the old western town is alive today with its cowboy themed restaurants and shops. Makawao is also home to many artists, art studios and galleries and is considered the art center of Hawaii. The 4th of July is celebrated by rodeos in this small upcountry town.

Hana

The slow paced town of Hana is located on the island’s eastern shore. The 52 mile Hana Highway with its picturesque coastline and beautiful waterfalls, was built in 1926. There are 59 bridges and 620 curves along the highway. The Ka’uiki Inn, Hana’s first hotel, was built by Paul Fagan in 1946 in an attempt to attract tourists to the area. This hotel is now known as the Travaasa Hotel. Charles Lindbergh spent his last days in Hana and is buried in a quiet cemetery in Kipahulu.

Snorkeling In Maui

By: Larissa Treese

When you close your eyes and picture paradise, you probably imagine every color such as bright greens, oranges, yellows and blues. Now, picture a beach in paradise or under the ocean’s surface, ever think you would see more than a few shades of blue? Welcome to Maui! Maui offers some of the best ocean experiences all year round. Whether it is from the shore, boat or sky, you can observe and immerse yourself in as much or as little as you would like. Snorkeling is one of the best ways to participate in another world; it is one that does not wait for you, but is always willing to share its beauty. From the time you put your foot in the water, to the time you exit you are amongst the homes of thousands of unique individuals all who live in their well-balanced society. Enter smoothly and slowly and enjoy all they have to offer during your snorkel. Sometimes they are aware of your presence, but the thing to remember is always take a moment and never be in a hurry; those who think they have somewhere they need to go or be will not appreciate the journey along the way. Paddle slowly, look left, right and peacefully float over all the little habitats. They don’t mind your presence, and they will usually show themselves more when there is minimal splashing. Take note of the octopus that blends in with the rockwork, watch how they change texture and color in less than a second. Don’t miss the eel that needs to temporarily leave its home to hunt elsewhere. Quick, don’t miss the turtle that is grazing on algae or resting within the reef. Remember always, you are a visitor in a rich ecosystem and to ensure that every snorkeler after you can experience their wonderful world, please follow the rules of the ocean and the tips we have provided below and remember, always enjoy & respect the natural beauty that the Hawaiian waters has to offer!

Tips to remember when entering the ocean: • There is safety in numbers • ALWAYS rinse off sun tanning oils • Do not go swimming after a storm, rain, or when the waters are choppy • Avoid swimming near spear fishermen. Where there are fish, there are bigger fish • Do not swim where there is runoff • Avoid swimming at dusk and dawn, there are behavior changes in certain predator fish • Do not bring outside food. It can cause a feeding frenzy and disrupt the natural balance of their environment • Never step on any rock as it is most likely is someone’s home • REMEMBER HARASSING SEA TURTLES IS PUNISHABLE BY LAW • LEAVE ONLY FOOTPRINTS IN THE SAND, NOT TRASH All activities listed are for informational purposes only. Activity participation is entirely up to the activity operator.

Polynesian settlers date back to around 450 A.D. In 1802 King Kamehameha made Lahaina the capital of his Hawaiian Island kingdom. In 1850 the capital was relocated to Honolulu. 1800’s Lahaina was a major whaling port and fishing town. Along with the sailors, the missionaries were also attracted to the area, also known as Lele, “Land of Relentless Sun”. Eventually, by 1853, the missionaries with their schools, printing press and newly constructed prison had tamed the sailors’ ways. In 1873, in celebration of the 50th anniversary of the first Christian Mission, the now famous Banyan Tree was planted by the sheriff of the old Lahaina Town, William Owen Smith.

PROTECTING OUR OCEANS’ REEFS GAMMIE HOMECARE GAMMIE

Having the privilege to swim in our oceans among our most beautiful creatures is just that, a privilege. Too many, ignore the requests of the many scientists and marine biologists who spend their lives studying the impact of humans on our delicate oceans. Ignorance is not bliss when it comes to the destruction of these delicate ecosystems whose survival depends largely on us.

YOUR BEST CHOICE FOR HOME MEDICAL EQUIPMENT

• Mobility Aids • Standing Aids

It is estimated that the world’s coral reefs cover 368,000 square miles of our 141,600,000 square miles of ocean, and just over 4,500 square miles, equal to 82%, of the coral reefs located in the U.S. waters, are located right here in Hawaii. These incredible ecosystems produce nearly $800 million in gross annual revenue for the state of Hawaii and are considered one of the most valuable assets of the Tourism and Hospitality sectors. Simply, knowing about the living coral reefs will help you while you are enjoying the islands, to do your part to help preserve the many beautiful living organisms that call our coral reefs home.

• Respiratory Aids • Bath Safety Aids • Sleep Apnea Products • Pain Control Aids

Your Best Find In Lifestyle Equipment Choices

NEVER stand on or touch any coral, dead or alive ALWAYS rinse off suntan oils before entering the ocean NEVER touch, feed or harass fish or any sea life

808. 877. 4032 292 Alamaha Street, Kahului, HI 96732

By following these few guidelines, you can do your part to preserve the oceans’ coral reefs when you are in their home. With any luck our children’s children will be able to see the same beautiful sights as you will during your stay!

A Great West Maui Day Trip By: Larissa Treese Maui is a very distinct island, offering a wide range of landscapes, including lush waterfalls, barren lava fields, expansive beaches and dramatic cliffs. If you like to explore on your vacation destination, then this is a day trip for you! It is well worth the drive, and lucky for you, much diverse scenery can be seen within one day! This is just one example of many day trips you can enjoy around the island of Maui. The West Maui Mountains, also known as Maui Komohana to the Hawaiians, is an eroded volcano that makes up about onequarter of western Maui. You can drive completely around this section of the island, and I prefer to do it “backwards”, starting in Wailuku and heading to Lahaina. If you start in the morning, you can make it to Lahaina in time for lunch. Be advised, this drive gets narrow at times and you should have an experienced driver behind the wheel on this particular trip, the views however, are well worth the excitement! Before you start your journey from Wailuku you may want to do a quick detour to ‘Iao Valley (pronounced ee-ow). The valley is filled with deep lush tropical foliage, the Kepaniwai Park Heritage Gardens, the ‘Iao stream and trails leading to breath taking views such as the ‘Iao Needle (Kuka’emoku) is a must! Iao Valley is also the site of one of the most famous and bloody battles in Hawaiian history, taking place in 1790.To find this area drive to the end of ‘Iao Valley Road in Wailuku. After the ‘Iao Valley, continue on through Wailuku through Market Street, you are now on Highway 340 heading to Kahakuloa. Between miles 9 and 10 you will see the Turnbull Studios, a lovely sculpture garden & gallery, open 10-5 Monday through Friday as well as private appointments if you call in advance. Remaining on the highway, continue along the road and enjoy all the breath taking views you will see! There are plenty of places to pull over and take photos, just be aware of drivers wanting to pass from either direction and please be careful of the bicyclists! Just when you have had enough of the single lane road, it opens up to a newly paved lane. Do not miss the Nakalele Blowhole on Highway 30 which was created by the ocean wearing away the shore below the lava shelf. At mile marker 38 you will see a small gravel parking lot where the trail starts to the blowhole, if you cannot hike the short but steep hike down, you can still enjoy a beautiful view from the top! If you do hike down however, you will find several places that sell fruit or banana bread, some of them operate on an honor system, please follow their instructions. Coming back around the bend and towards “civilization”, you start to see another island, this is Molokai. Molokai is Hawaii’s fifth largest island, known for their untouched beaches and highest sea cliffs in the world. All in all, the drive may be rough at points but shows how diverse and rugged Maui can be without spending the whole day in your vehicle. The dramatic differences along the way are worth witnessing and documenting, so grab your camera and enjoy the ride!

• Stream, falls and natural pools in Hawaii should be assumed are affected with Leptospirosis and Giardia. One should not swim in the water with open cuts or wounds. • When snorkeling or swimming NEVER step on coral (or what you may think are rocks) in any way, you will kill the coral and every living organism that survives and feeds off that coral. • The only way our beaches and parks can remain beautiful and enjoyable, is for everyone to participate by cleaning up after themselves. Remove your trash and protect the environment. • Most beaches in Hawaii are NOT wheelchair or walker accessible. Some have paved sidewalks leading to the sand; others may have hard packed grass that wheelchairs may be able to navigate over. • All sea life in Hawaii is protected; laws are enforced. Do NOT touch, harass or feed any sea life you may encounter in the ocean or on the shore. Page 64
