Handi Guides™ was developed and designed for everyone regardless of age or physical capabilities. For over thirty years working in the Travel Industry it was my responsibility to ensure vacation requests resulted in happy people. With that same concept in mind, my associates and I have created a visitor resource like no other available here on Maui - A guide which lists activities by area, companies who provide the activity, and their ability to accommodate those who with physical limitations. Where else can you find activities and the companies who provide them by simply using a convenient Table of Contents from A-Z? With Handi Guides™, satisfaction of your family’s activity needs is right at your fingertips! You don’t have to flip aimlessly through magazine advertisements, only to discover at the end that you found nothing of interest for you or your family; Handi Guides™ provides you with the companies’ name, phone numbers, websites, locations of activities and the companies’ abilities to accommodate physical limitations. We don’t receive commissions for activities; we ask only that you try to get a discount for yourself by booking directly by phone or online and mentioning to the activity operator that you found them in Handi Guides™. For those of you who do not wish to find your own activities, and rely solely on paid agents, then we suggest you give Maui Wishes a try. They will go out of their way to make sure your requirements are satisfied.

OFFICE OF THE MAYOR County of Maui 200 South High Street Wailuku, Maui, Hawaii 96793
A MESSAGE FROM MAYOR ALAN M. ARAKAWA Aloha! It is my privilege to welcome you to this beautiful place we call home: Maui. Our island is waiting for you to explore, and there are many exciting things for you to see and do. I encourage you to take advantage of this HANDI GUIDE to discover the many tours, activities, classes and sightseeing and shopping options specifically suited to your level of physical ability. I have traveled many times with disabled family members and friends, thus am extremely familiar with the challenges one can encounter. By using this guide, you can plan your adventures according to each person’s limitations and abilities. Maui will delight you with its natural beauty, whether you enjoy the magnificent vistas of Haleakala Crater, discover picturesque waterfalls on a drive or tour to Hana, or delight in our warm Hawaiian waters by kayaking, surfing, stand-up paddling, SCUBA diving, snorkeling or simply soaking up some sun. Other enticing options include relaxing spa treatments, fascinating historical landmarks and exhilarating activities like helicopter flights, ziplines, off-road tours, hiking, sailing, lava tube cave tours and horseback riding. On behalf of the people of Maui County, I welcome you to enjoy the wealth of treasures that make Maui such an extraordinary place to visit. I hope you create many special memories to last a lifetime. Me ke aloha pumehana (with warmest aloha),

Paia
Paia became a popular residential community in the early 1880’s after Alexander a n d B a l d w i n C o m p a n y opened the first sugar mill on the island. The 1950’s brought a decline in the sugar industry, directly affecting the small beach town. In the 60’s Paia caught the eye of the Hippie generation with its picturesque beaches and island beauty. Soon new businesses opened and the population started to grow once again. In the 70’s a new form of surfing, called Windsurfing swept the nation. Ho`okipa Beach, located a couple of miles east of Paia, quickly became the most photographed windsurfing spot on earth with its afternoon trades blowing an average of 20-22 knots, year round. Grab your lunch and watch as the world’s top windsurfers & kiteboarders put on a show for all to see.

Kahanu Garden
Set on a rugged lava coast overlooking the scenic Pacific Ocean is Kahanu Garden and the home of Pi`ilanihale Heiau. Step back in time and experience the unspoiled beauty of the area while taking a leisurely tour of this extraordinary ethno botanical garden and its collections of Hawai`ian and Pacific plants used for food, building, clothing, medicine and religion. See the diverse varieties of breadfruit, taro, banana, sugarcane and others all within Hawai`i’s largest remaining native Pandanus forest. The Pi`ilanihale Heiau, a place of worship and literally translates to “House of Pi`ilani”. This sacred lava-stone temple is named for Maui’s beloved chief who ruled during the 16th century. Visitors are asked to respect the sacredness of this site and view from designated areas within the garden. The Kahanu Garden has both guided and self-guided tours available. Self-guided tours generally run Monday – Friday 10am – 2pm ($10). Guided Tours are on Saturday from 10am – noon ($25) and reservations are required at www.ntbg.org. Kahanu Garden has had all types of visitors including those in wheelchairs and walkers; it is up to the individual’s abilities. Directions: Driving towards Hana on Hana Highway (360) look for Mile Marker #31. Just past Mile Marker turn toward the ocean (north) onto `Ulaino Road. Drive approximately 1 ½ miles, after crossing the streambed you will find Kahanu Garden on the right hand side. Please stop at the visitor’s kiosk to check in.

He said he comes to Maui annually, with the exception of last year, and said by far this is the best magazine on the island! He also stated he was bringing magazines back to his friends that also own timeshares & come to the island frequently.

Polynesian settlers date back to around 450 A.D. In 1802 King Kamehameha made Lahaina the capital of his Hawaiian Island kingdom. In 1850 the capital was relocated to Honolulu. 1800’s Lahaina was a major whaling port and fishing town. Along with the sailors, the missionaries were also attracted to the area, also known as Lele, “Land of Relentless Sun”. Eventually, by 1853, the missionaries with their schools, printing press and newly constructed prison had tamed the sailors’ ways. In 1873, in celebration of the 50th anniversary of the first Christian Mission, the now famous Banyan Tree was planted by the sheriff of the old Lahaina Town, William Owen Smith.

The Road to Hana The Hana Highway, commonly referred to as “The Road to Hana,” starts in Kahului and runs 68 miles (109km) and includes State Routes 36 and 360. The Highway continues past the 311 town of Hana30to Kipahulua as Route 31 (Piilani Highway). There are approximately 620 curves from Kahului to Hana and 59 bridges, (all but one31date back to 1910) the majority of which are one-lane bridges. There is no passing allowed on the Road to Hana, however slower vehicles please use one of the many pullouts along the way to allow faster cars to go on ahead of you.
KULA
Bridges Before every bridge there will be a Yield sign. You must yield to oncoming drivers. The first driver(s) to approach the bridge have the right of way. It is not a stop sign and should not be treated as such. If there is a car in front of you about to go over the bridge, follow it. If the car is on the bridge when you approach and there are oncoming cars waiting to cross the bridge, stop and wait your turn. Also, note that the first mile marker on your journey, marker 1, starts you off at the intersection of 365 and 36/360. Swimming in Natural Pools Swimming in a beautiful natural swimming hole with a waterfall is dream for many, however be aware of the dangers. Obviously rocks and paths will be wet, sharp and slippery. There are no lifeguards on duty and help may be hours away.

CAUTION: As with all freshwater streams and waterfalls in Hawaii, Leptospirosis bacteria may be present in the water. Never drink the water, close your eyes and keep out of the water if you have any open wounds including small scratches. Mile Markers
#
Mile markers are signified on our map by the green squares containing numbers. While driving, you will not see any mile markers with decimal points. The decimals are used on this map to show you more precisely where a location is. For example, the marker on this map showing “9.5” is actually just 5/10ths of a mile past mile marker 9. While driving, you will not see an actual “9.5” marker. NOTE: At Mile Marker 51 beyond Hana towards Haleakala Nat’l Park the markers will reverse.

HAWAIIAN ISLANDS HUMPBACK WHALE NATIONAL MARINE SANCTUARY (Mon – Fri 10am – 3pm) The recently renovated sanctuary visitor center is the ideal location to learn about the marine environment, the efforts of NOAA, the State of Hawaii, and others to protect humpback whales, monk seals, sea turtles and coral reefs. The sanctuary’s temporary exhibits tell the story of the marine animals and the coral reefs found throughout the Hawaiian Islands, and how the native Hawaiians lived in harmony with those marine animals and reefs. During the whale season you may even see a humpback whale breaching off the shore in the waters outside the sanctuary! Address: 726 S. Kihei Road, Kihei | (808) 879-2818 | www.humpbackwhale.noaa.gov/ All activities listed are for informational purposes only. Activity participation is entirely up to the activity operator.

Humpback Whales By: Larissa Treese & D. Givot • Photography by: Scott Mead
Every year in the fall, humpback whales will migrate approximately 6 to 8 weeks and over 3,500 nautical sea miles from the cold Alaskan waters to the warm waters of Hawaii to breed. Usually, Maui residents and visitors will start to spot these magnificent creatures in late September and early October. The whale population generally peaks between the months of February and March, after which they will gradually begin their return migration to the cool waters of Alaska. Just off the west coast of Maui, between Lahaina and Lana`i, the warm waters of Hawaii and the protection of the surrounding islands makes a very favorable destination for mating, breeding and nursing for the humpbacks. While in the Hawaiian waters, humpbacks will not feed as the waters are too warm and do not produce zooplankton, the food of choice for the whales. Females can reach up to 60’ feet in length, weigh a ton per foot, and generally grow slightly larger than their male companions. They give birth every second or third year and have a gestation period of ten to twelve months. At birth, the calf will be between 10 - 15 feet in size and weigh up to a ton. After giving birth, the female will stay with her calf for up to a year while she nurses and teaches her offspring. The calf will start learning graceful acrobatics, including breaching, tail or pectoral slapping, head thrusts, regulation of body temperature, courtship and singing. The meanings of the songs may be unclear to humans, but scientists believe they are most likely forms of communication. Humpbacks will spend over 90% of their life under water; to be able to view them in their natural environment is a real treat, and one that should not be taken lightly. Hawaiian laws protect the humpback whales and are very strict on how close anyone, except scientists with a permit, can come to them. You must never get closer than 100 yards of any humpback whale, or 50 yards from any other whale or mammal species (dolphin or monk seal). You must not harass, touch or feed whales or any sea life at any time. The best way to see the humpbacks is either from the shore, or on a professional whale watching cruise. There are also kayak tours and paddleboards rentals that are a favorite amongst many. If you choose to paddle out on your own and not with a professional tour; do not paddle toward the whale or you may be cited for harassment and charged appropriately if you are found within 100 yards of the protected mammal. If you witness any whale or mammal harassment while visiting our beautiful island, please call (808) 853-1964 to report immediately. There is still so much to learn about these astounding mammals. Since adding them to the animal protection list in 1970, the North Pacific population has increased to over 20,000 from 1,400 in the 70’s. Unfortunately, there are still many large threats for the humpback whales; such as being entangled in nets and fishing lines or hit by boats, human harassment and habitat impacts. If everyone will abide by the laws and do their best to limit the effects of humans on sea life, we can be assured that the humpback numbers will continue to increase, and they will return for many years to come.
CALL (808) 853-1964 TO REPORT ANY WHALE OR SEA LIFE HARASSMENT

• Stream, falls and natural pools in Hawaii should be assumed are affected with Leptospirosis and Giardia. One should not swim in the water with open cuts or wounds. • When snorkeling or swimming NEVER step on coral (or what you may think are rocks) in any way, you will kill the coral and every living organism that survives and feeds off that coral. • The only way our beaches and parks can remain beautiful and enjoyable, is for everyone to participate by cleaning up after themselves. Remove your trash and protect the environment. • Most beaches in Hawaii are NOT wheelchair or walker accessible. Some have paved sidewalks leading to the sand; others may have hard packed grass that wheelchairs may be able to navigate over. • All sea life in Hawaii is protected; laws are enforced. Do NOT touch, harass or feed any sea life you may encounter in the ocean or on the shore. Page 60
