Welcome to the Autumn issue of Handmade Magazine. Within its pages, we are talking about the amazing Australian designers and producers that we will be welcoming to the market on 17 & 18 March, showing you a selection of what you will find by category. We also have articles about our artisans and Handmade’s place in Canberra, so make your favourite drink and spend some time familiarising yourself with what Handmade has to offer. The focus of the next market is Autumn. While we’ve enjoyed a long and hot Summer, the nights are cooler now and we’re turning our thoughts to making our homes cosy and pulling out our favourite knitwear and boots in preparation for the season to come. Handmade is the perfect place to accessorise your Autumn home and wardrobe. With inspiration from seasonal food, it is also the place to stock up the pantry with delicious local produce that will help you create the perfect Autumn menu. The Handmade Market offers 260 stalls of food, fashion, homewares and gifts, providing you with familiar favourites and new stallholders to chat to and buy from. We thank you for supporting Australian small business and look forward to sharing our market with you, with over half of our stalls exclusive to us in Canberra.

Handmade Canberra will be celebrating its 10th anniversary this year. That’s 10 years of supporting Australian business and giving local artisans and producers a platform from which to leap. A small seed of an idea took on a life of its own when a market with 30 stalls grew into an event that regularly welcomes 24,000 people. Ten years ago, Canberra was ready for a change, a move from the traditional reputation of a place of politicians, public servants and roundabouts to somewhere with its own exciting vibe and creative direction. And Handmade was there at the beginning, encouraging creative people and showing them that Canberra was a great place to start out and thrive. Just look at what has happened since then! Canberra has become a place of bustling cafés, award winning restaurants, sociable and innovative bars. It’s a place with a focus on the outdoor life, wonderful views and fresh air. And it’s also a place with spectacular events, from the balloon festival to Enlighten, the Multi Cultural Festival and a selection of wonderful pop up markets. Standing the test of time through this period, Handmade has continued to do what it set out to. It has invited stylish designers and producers from the region and wider Australia to showcase their talent here in Canberra to an audience with its own aesthetic and a growing confidence in its own individuality. Handmade was there at the beginning of Canberra’s renaissance, nurturing the creativity that has come to characterise our capital. Which makes Handmade as Canberran as the modernist buildings, leafy suburbs, hipster streets and sophisticated eateries that our beautiful city is known for. Here’s to the next 10 years.

5 THINGS FAVOURITE

We asked Li Peng Monroe from Jasper + Myrtle Chocolates for her 5 favourites... 1. CANBERRA LANDMARK New Parliament House. It’s a beautiful architectural piece that exudes power and sits in the perfect position. 2. HOLIDAY DESTINATION Bougainville, PNG. It’s not five star, but it’s natural and unspoilt and the people are beautiful - we’ve made good friends there and can’t wait to go back. 3. WEEKEND ACTIVITY Other than making chocolate? A day at the coast is perfect. Coming home tired with a bellyfull of fish & chips and a head full of sun is the best feeling. 4. MORNING DRINK Black tea, no sugar. We have a huge selection of teas and are tea snobs, so plain black tea is just right. 5. CHOCOLATE FLAVOUR Our Bougainville Nunu 80% Black Opal is made of such high quality beans that the flavour constantly surprises me and changes subtly from batch to batch.

for the kids

The little ones are not forgotten at the Handmade Market. Not only will they have fun looking at all of the stalls, but they will be able to sample the delicious snacks and come away with something to keep. Toys by Sweet Sista and organic comforters by Snugipops will soothe them, accessories by Le Petit Bouton will dress them, while art from Fizzy Pop Designs will inspire them. 23

There is something for everyone at Handmade and there are plenty of unique finds for men to be had at the market. Beard oil by The Mister Brand, hand stitched pieces by Blackinkk and innovative paper wallets from Mi Wallet are practical, while leather cuffliks by Farrah Design, reindeer cuffs from Swede Little Things and mechanical jewellery by Time Flies Designs make great gifts.
