WELCOME Can you feel it in the air? Flowers are blooming and while the mornings are still cold, the light has changed. Yes, Spring is fast approaching and with it, the promise of longer days. It’s almost time to put your coat away, throw open the doors and turn your attention to the next season. If that means a new wardrobe, then the Handmade Market is the place to look for designer finds that are locally and lovingly designed and created. If Spring cleaning is on the agenda, Handmade’s homewares designers can help to accessorise your fresh new look. And if you are planning your Spring menus, take advantage of a fully stocked larder in the gourmet food hall and make sure you put delicious local produce on your shopping list. In the Spring issue of Handmade Magazine, we will list our 220 stalls, introduce you to a selection of our newest designers and hear some words of wisdom from established faces at the market. We will tempt you with our food offering and reveal the secret recipes of two of our producers. We’ll also map out the best of Canberra for the market weekend and beyond. The Handmade Market is on Saturday 10th and Sunday 11th September, from 10am until 4pm at Exhibition Park in Canberra (EPIC). Two halls will be packed with beautiful designs made by Australian artisans, delicious food and an unbeatable atmosphere of creativity and excitement. Please enjoy, and we’ll see you at the market. 3

Handmade Canberra was established in 2008 to satisfy a local need for high quality, handmade Australian designs. From small beginnings, it has grown into a much anticipated event on the Canberra calendar, attracting designers and visitors from all over Australia. In two halls of the Exhibition Park (EPIC), there are 220 stalls of designer gifts, homewares, fashion, accessories, children’s items and food. The gourmet food hall is growing in popularity, with locals eager to taste, try and buy the best local produce, coffee, wine and street food. Spend a couple of hours or spend the day. There is easy access, abundant free parking, plenty of space to sit and relax, wide aisles and baby changing facilities, ATMs and friendly, knowledgeable staff to assist and advise you.

WARMING DRINKS

PERFECT WINTER CHAI by Tea Garden

Always use freshly drawn water. Bring water to boiling point and use fresh spices that are included in the chai blend you are using to make those flavours pop. Once the room smells amazing and your spices have infused through the water (around 2- 3 minutes) add your choice of milk (vanilla soy is good). When the milk begins to froth and rise bring the temp right down and add your chai tea of choice. Let the tea simmer for around 2 minutes Now add a little sweetness, honey is always a great option, and strain into a cosy cup You can now sip happily on the most decadent chai you have ever made.

AZTEC HOT CHOCOLATE by Enigma

Ingredients 90g 100% cacao 450ml water 1 tsp cinnamon 1/3 vanilla pod or 1/4 tsp vanilla extract 1/2 tbsp honey

Method Place the cacao, water and cinnamon in a saucepan. If using vanilla pod, scrape out the seeds from the vanilla pod and add both the seeds and pod to the pan. Bring to the boil stirring frequently, then lower the heat and simmer gently for about 5 minutes, or until the mixture thickens slightly. Take the pod out and discard. Whisk the mixture well to form a light foam. Remove from the heat. Add the honey and stir. If you are using vanilla extract instead of the pod, then add it in now. Serve hot.
